(Urban Street Eats Food Truck) Mixing a healthy amount of musical chops, honest, and creative songwriting, powerful stage presence and well sung four-part harmonies, L Shape Lot creates an original and dynamic Americana sound based in country, rock, bluegrass, and roots/folk music. Their lively sound explores new ground, while still paying homage to their predecessors. Time to Come Alive!
The Wilmington Conservatory of Fine Arts Presents Another Hit Musical STORY BY THOMAS BARNETT
L
adies and gentlemen, boys and girls, I now present to you, back by popular demand, a show that we have all been waiting for, brought to you by the Wilmington Conservatory of Fine Arts, without further ado, it’s the production, Come Alive! On June 15, make sure to catch the 2 p.m. matinée or the 6 p.m. performance.
This is a spectacular show that combines dance, song, and dialog, to tell the story of a young woman’s journey. This journey entails finding oneself and escaping the monotony of everyday life. With enthralling music from the Greatest Showman and other musical arrangements, this show is filled with talented and local performers. Mark your calendars for June
15th! There will be two showings on these days, one at 2pm and one at 6pm. You will be mesmerized as you feast your eyes upon the vibrant circus atmosphere, with energetic and relatable characters. It will warm your heart, and leave you inspired. Come Alive is brought to you by a very talented local studio, Wilmington Conservatory of Fine Arts, (WCFA). These
6 Leland Magazine /JUNE 2019 / www.LelandMag.com
are the same people who have put on cherished shows of original choreography in the past such as, the Sleeping Beauty Ballet, The Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe, and Hope Has Come, a show created to
help usher in hope and healing for those impacted by hurricane Florence. WCFA is a school that specializes in teaching kids of all ages, about the power, importance, and fundamentals of the
currents fine arts. They offer a plethora of dance classes; As a multifaceted organization that also offers classes in character, tap, contemporary, hip-hop, and jazz. You can also learn how to play instruments, learn about the visual arts, yoga, pilates, singing, and theatre there. In addition, they have Music Together® classes for babies and toddlers. It’s never too early to start educating your children about the richness of the arts. Summer is the perfect time to sign up and get involved. According to Cory Smith, the dedicated founder and director of the WCFA, “Summer camps and intensives are a great time to get acclimated to the program, and there will be placement classes to help figure out where the a student would best fit”. Many students in this studio are aspiring to take their talent to the professional level, and if you glance at the WCFA’s website, you will see all of the accolades that these talented students have achieved. Dance has taken former students to professional levels and careers and have made it as far
as Broadway, Las Vegas and medaling in the Youth American Grand Prix. “The students will get the chance to be apart of a professional caliber show”, says Josh Wise, the talented writer and director of the show. When I asked Josh about what the audience could expect, he was reluctant to give too many details away, but he did mention, gorgeous costumes and set design, and “rumors” of an 11ft circus tent to give the show depth and dimension. Josh and Cory are not the only ones working diligently, in the show there are over 100 dancers, many of whom have been working six days a week, giving it their all. Plus all of the dedicated dance teachers have played a pivotal part in the choreography. When I talked to Cory she made it clear that the atmosphere at the studio is light hearted and charismatic, the students love what they do, the WCFA is like a second home to them. For Cory, WCFA is more than just a brainchild. When I asked her what her
organization means to her she said, “Children grow up in this atmosphere, and spend some of the best parts of their lives here. We are touching lives, it is not only artistically fulfilling but it is also such an honor and a responsibility”. When I looked on the Wilmington Conservatory of Fine Arts’ website for the first time, they had prominently displayed the definition of the word “conservatory”. It means a school specializing in one of the fine arts but it also means to guard, observe, keep safe and/or sound. It is clear to me that no better word could be used to describe this organization. Remember June 15th at the Wilson Center, at either 2 p.m. or 6 p.m. Come Alive is family friendly, relatable to all, entertaining, exciting, and above all, inspiring! Leland, and surrounding areas, take the time to break free from the monotony of everyday life, and do yourself a favor by coming alive!

BIZ Q&A Rapid Growth for NBMA
CUSTOM CAKES!
North Brunswick Merchant Association booms with Leland businesses STORY BY KASS FINCHER
W
e reached out to the Association to find out more about its goals and membership. Their website describes their rapid growth over the last year or so: “Our mission began in 2017, starting out as a local social media group. Within the first year, we amassed a following of well over 1,000 people, promoted countless local businesses, and effectively joined business owners and consumers together during open houses, small business events, promotions and our first small business expo.” Here are a few questions and answers about the Association that we thought you might want to know. What is the mission of your organization; why should a business join?
Our primary mission is to provide an affordable organization to assist in promoting our local businesses. For low annual fees, members get listed in our membership directory on our website, with direct links to their websites. They get rotating, continuous promotions on our social media sites, and are offered reduced vendor fees for event participation. What communities do you cover, and how many members do you have?
We primarily cover Northern Brunswick County, but we have business members from outside of that area. After forming almost one year ago, we currently have about 80 members. How would you describe your membership – small businesses, chains, locally owned, retail or other businesses?
Our members are a fantastic mix of brick and mortar stores, and homebased businesses.
What events or meetings will you have this year?
So far this year, our events have included the spring food truck rodeo, and the spring business expo. Look for these same two major events coming in the fall! Do you work in coordination with other merchant associations or chambers? If so, for what purposes?
We currently are not working with other associations. We have been focusing on building a solid foundation for our own association, before collaborating on larger events.
The area has shown tremendous growth in recent years; has this had an effect on your organization?
We believe the unprecedented growth in our area has increased the need for organizations such as the NBMA. What challenges do your members face in growing their businesses, and how does your organization help them?
The challenge to advertise and reach as many customers as possible is becoming increasingly difficult, especially for our smaller businesses. The NBMA gives them an extra website, extra social media sites, and events to get their businesses in front of thousands of additional people.

CHEERS Quenching Your Summer Thirst
Non-traditional new brews hit the spot STORY BY JEFF STITES
W
ith the summer season now fully upon us, we are faced with a huge number of choices in the local beer cooler. The beer business is, if we’re being honest, a bit iffy right now. The craft brew revolution continues in full swing, but its numbers just can’t replace the people drifting away from beer and into other adult beverages.
While this is tough for the brewers, it has led to certain benefits for us beer drinkers. The one ace in the hole these businesses have is innovation, and they are playing that card for all it’s worth lately. Today it seems there are more varieties of just American IPAs than there were varieties of beer 30 years ago. And it isn’t just the hopheads that win here, there are a ton of new fruity beers coming out, from aqua frescos to goses to simply old style infused with new ingredients. And then there is the quest to attract that elusive creature, the Millennial Beer Drinker. Researchers have determined that todays youngest beer consumers are interested in simple ingredients, honest labeling and healthy (or at least perceived healthier) products. This has led to the explosion of hard seltzers you’ve surely seen on your local supermarket’s shelves. I’ve grabbed a few of these newer products, trying to find a little something that might appeal to everyone, and sampled them for you, my dear readers. It’s a tough job, but somebody’s gotta do it, right?

Cigar City Brewing 7.5% ABV 65 IBU The Label Says: Our unique oak-aged IPA marries the tropical profile of Jai Alai IPA with notes of coconut and vanilla contributed by white oak. Rustic wood notes abound, adding further dimension to our citrusy India Pale Ale. My Take: This was a totally selfish choice. I’ve written about Jai Alai before and it remains one of my very favorite beers, and this is, despite the flowery prose in the label description, simply a kicked-up version
of the original. I can’t honestly say I get a lot of coconut notes, though maybe if I use my imagination I get a little, but the white oak truly does add a depth to the flavor of an already excellent recipe.
MURAL AGUA FRESCA CERVEZA
New Belgium Brewing in collaboration with Primus Cerveceria in Mexico City 4% ABV 11 IBU The Label Says: In collaboration with Mexico City’s Cerveceria Primus, this aqua Fresca ale features hibiscus, agave, watermelon and lime for a fresh, vibrant sip. Inspired by the Mexican aqua Fresca tradition of fruit infused beverages. My Take: Do you see what I mean about these folks getting creative in the brew lab? These folks have combined two fruits (one citrus and one sweet) with a plant and a flower to come up with something different. It really is different, too. For one, it’s pink. That was a bit of a surprise. The flavor is not very beer-y at all, but not at all bad. While there is hardly any hops bitterness, it isn’t terribly sweet either. This isn’t the beer for everyone, it made my wife make a face, but for the right person, under the right circumstances, it may be a good choice.
PASSION FRUIT KOLSCH
New Belgium Brewing 4.3% ABV 13 IBU The Label Says: Traditional Kolsch brewed with passion fruit juice and tropical American hops. My Take: I’m not sure what “tropical American hops” are, but who am I to judge? There isn’t nearly as much craziness in this brew as there was in the last, but the choices of the kolsch style and passion fruit intrigued me. They both wound up being wise choices, as this beer is neither too much fruit or too much beer, it strikes a very pleasant balance. I may have found a new go-to summer beverage!
wine cooler, or virtually tasteless like seltzer water. If I weren’t in the mood for beer and I didn’t have any liquor around or the mixers to make something refreshing, this might be an option.
Voted Best Thing for Visitors To Do!
CAPE LINE SPARKLING COCKTAILS—STRAWBERRY LEMONADE
Cape Line Beverage Company 4.5% ABV IBU is not really a factor here The Label Says: Our mission is to craft naturally delicious cocktails with only 6 simple ingredient and nothing artificial. Lightly sparkling and coming in at only 120 calories, this is flavorful refreshment you can feel good about. My Take: This is a prime example of marketing to Millennials. It hits all the “right” notes concerning natural versus artificial, gluten-free and few ingredients. I’m not sure why one would be scared of ingredients in general, but then I’m old, so there’s that. This doesn’t call itself a “hard seltzer” because those are all so yesterday now. It all just seems so silly. But the beverage itself isn’t half bad. It’s not my thing, but it isn’t bad at all. It isn’t sickly sweet like a

SAVOR Full Italian Menu
Franks Pizza & Eatery delights with Italian Fare in Waterford STORY BY KASS FINCHER
W
hen Charles Haskins opened Frank’s Pizza and Eatery in Waterford Village last fall, he took the success he had built at his Carolina Beach restaurant and expanded on it. Frank’s Pizza on the boardwalk in Carolina Beach started in 1992, and when Charles purchased it from the family later, he already had a pretty good idea of how to run a pizza restaurant. “I had worked all through college in various pizza places, and I asked a lot of questions about how they did things,” says Haskins. “I learned from some of the best pizzeria establishments in the area, and that helped me get started on my own.” Though the Carolina Beach location
is small and focuses on pizza, the Leland restaurant offers a full selection of Italian dishes as well as specialty pizzas, sandwiches, appetizers and salads. The emphasis is on fresh, homemade and unique ingredients. “We try to make as much as we can in-house,” Haskins explains. “We pickle our own vegetables;

Here are 4 ways your small business can —Candace R. from Southport use video to better showcase your brand:
Q: Should I be
using more Video to market my business?
• Give a behind-the-scenes view. Offer a tour of your office or production facility where you make the magic happen. Giving viewers a visual backstage pass to the inner workings of your company can make them feel more in tune with your brand. • Provide product demos and how-to lessons. Seeing is believing, and live video allows you to demonstrate in real-time how products work. When you show rather than only tell, you can build more credibility and trust with your audience. • Humanize your brand by showcasing your team. You have real people behind your business, and letting your followers (also real people) meet them via live video can help make your brand more relatable to your audience. • Share customer testimonials and success stories. we make our own sauces and dressings as well as our own pizza dough. For our grinders, we get fresh baked bread from Apple Annie’s, and we partner with Sweet Treats to offer unique desserts.” One secret weapon Haskins credits for his quality offerings is his employee – the well-known pizza maker Luis Santibanez, who brings 35 years of experience to his work. The two best pizza sellers are the cheese pizza and the margherita, the latter made with crushed plum tomato sauce, fresh pulled mozzarella, homemade pesto, fresh garlic and parmesan. You can also build your own pizza from a myriad of fresh ingredients, with traditional Italian cured meats switched up each week. Topping choices include aged pepperoni, pulled pork, Canadian bacon, meatballs, prosciutto, goat cheese, chicken and Philly steak, among others. In addition to the variety of pizzas to choose from, Frank’s offers traditional Italian pasta favorites like shrimp scampi, chicken marsala, spaghetti and meatballs, ravioli and lasagna. The lasagne features five layers of delicious meats, cheeses and pasta. If you’re not up for pizza or pasta, you can select from a variety of salads and sandwiches or “grinders.” Haskins describes the most popular options. “We use Apple Annie’s bread and we put a lot of love into those,” he relates. “The Philly steak is a shaved ribeye that we roast down ourselves. The Brunswick is popular too – it’s a pickle brined and panko fried chicken breast with honey mustard and bacon, finished with shredded iceberg and tomato. The Americano is a favorite too – it’s made of ham, pepperoni and salami
with romaine, house roasted pepper, provolone and homemade dressing.” With seating for 30 at the Leland restaurant, Haskins says they also do a lot of takeout, as well as delivery in the area. Over this first year, he is also exploring special events on certain nights. Examples he’s considering include wine dinners, family-style dining night and kid’s dining night. Like many Leland area business owners, Haskins has seen the community grow rapidly in recent years. “I’m from upstate New York originally but I’ve lived in North Carolina for 15 years – long enough now to be acclimated to the South,” he smiles. “My wife and I have been super blessed by how we’ve been received in the community.” With wife Amanda, Haskins has a two-year-old son Charles and is expecting a daughter in June. Haskins is also giving back to the community, with Frank’s sponsorship of a local baseball team and outreach through local men’s and women’s organizations for charitable causes. He sums up his approach. “We’re just excited to be here,” Haskins says. “Anything we can do or provide, we welcome your feedback and thank you for your support.”

FITNESS Keeping Our Balance The Importance of Balance Training and Fall Prevention STORY BY BRIAN TULLY, MS, EP-C
I
t is no secret that falling down causes injuries. But what you might not know is that 30 to 60 percent of elderly individuals living in a community fall each year, with many of them experiencing multiple falls per year. To make matters worse, falls are actually the leading cause of injury related deaths in older adults and a significant cause of disability in this population. Therefore, prevention of falls and subsequent injuries should by a high priority; and a balance training program may be one of the key methods. •
According to the National Institute for Health (NIH), a balance training program strengthens self-efficacy in balance control which leads to improved fall related self-efficacy, reduced fear of falling, increased walking speed, and improved physical function. Balance training is especially important and yet an often overlooked component of post-surgical recovery. Adding balance training to the post-surgical exercise program has been shown to reduce fall risk and improve overall ambulation ability. According to the US Physical Activity Guidelines and the American College of Sports Medicine, older adults should follow a multi-component physical activity program that includes balance training along with aerobic and muscle strengthening activities. Specific balance training is recommended to be performed at least 3 times per week, but daily is the best medicine. The goal of any balance and fall prevention training program should be to ultimately get the participants out of their chairs and on their feet. If independent living and a high level of function are the desired results, the individual must be able to walk, carry things, weight shift, react, respond, slow down, and stop…all while staying
upright. Are you in need of some balance training? You can assess yourself with a simple baseline test of Standing on 1-Leg. To perform the test, simply stand on one leg without support of the upper body or bracing of one leg against the other. The number of seconds you are able to maintain this position is what is measured. Test ends when the foot touches down or the upper body touches something for support. (IMPORTANT: always perform this test near a stable object) How did you do? The longer the better of course; however it is important to note that seniors double their chances of falling and sustaining an injury if they are unable to perform this test for at least 5 seconds. The goals of a balance training program should include: Maintaining Neutral, Single Leg Balance, Level Changes, Weight Shifting, Walking and Carrying Capability, and Reaction Time. Along with the above mentioned balance training program goals, strength training plays a significant role in fall prevention. When we lose our balance the following muscles must jump into action and they must be strong enough to do their job when called upon:
• • • •
Toes grip the floor and the muscles of the calf decelerate the ankle Core muscles must contract to stabilize the spine and hips Quadriceps (front thigh muscles) lock and stabilize the knee Glutes (buttocks) and Hamstrings (back of thigh) decelerate the hip Abductors (outer thigh and outer buttocks) stabilize the pelvis
PRACTICE THE BASICS STAND – stand on each leg for at least five seconds; do this multiple times per day; try not to hold on, but have support available; remember the inability to stand on each leg for at least 5 seconds is associated with a greater fall risk, so be sure to practice SQUAT – sit down and stand up multiple times every day; put a dining room chair against a wall for support; try to maintain a “crouched” position over the chair for 5-10 seconds; squatting is associated with an increase in independent living ability WALK – walk every day; walk briskly as possible; fast walking speeds are associated with increased longevity, but gradually increase speed as you improve your single leg balance ability…walking requires a lot of balance training components.
BEAT THE GRIM REAPER In December of 2011, the British Medical Journal reported the results of research from “The Grim Reaper Study” which correlated walking speed to longevity. Basically it said that the faster older adults can walk, the lower their mortality rate. According to the study, your goal would be to be able to walk 4.5 feet per second (3 mph pace). This equates to 135 feet in 30 seconds. The study concluded that the nearly perent mortality rate of those in the study able to walk 3 mph or greater must mean that the Grim Reaper’s maximal walking speed is about 2.9 mph. Walking is great exercise but it does require a lot of balance to do, especially at a fast pace. This is why balance training is important as we age. As The Grim Reaper Study states, he doesn’t walk fast…but he doesn’t need to if you fall. Take the single leg assessment test and practice the basics. You will be very surprised what a little daily practice will do for you in jut a few short weeks. ART BEAT Sketch Artist Shares Tips Lin Frye to speak at Art League in June STORY BY AMI BROWN
T
he Leland Cultural Art Center presents a variety of art exhibitions and unique cultural experiences. June is no exception! This month the guest speaker is amazing artist Lin Frye.
The Art League of Leland (ALL) invites artists and art enthusiasts to its June 13 meeting with artist Lin Frye as the featured guest speaker. Frye will discuss sketching in its many forms, share tips and techniques for sketching, and demonstrate how sketchbooks allow her to tell her story in words and images. The meeting will take place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Leland Cultural Arts Center, 1212 Magnolia Village Way, Leland. An avid watercolorist, Frye loves the
spontaneous and fresh approach of ink and wash. While she states that her paintings are “expressions of the joy and wonder” she finds in living, she believes that one can know her better through her sketchbooks than her finished works. A trained ethnobotanist (one who studies the relationships of people and plants), Frye teaches watercolor classes and is a board member of the Cape Fear Sketchers. Her artwork has been sold throughout the United States and Europe. ALL’s June spotlight is on Susan Sims-
