Caroline Dare extremely tough. I know exactly what I want to do in my future, and school can feel like an absolute burden sometimes. Music is already my job, and I’m never lounging around and doing nothing. It’s an everyday thing, and it’s hard to have to balance school on top of that. Thankfully, I’m homeschooled, so I can travel and not worry about being behind so much. I’ve only been homeschooled for two years, so I’m still trying to find a happy medium. 9) WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TV SHOW? I love reality tv and comedies! My favorite comedy show right now is ‘Parks and Recreation’.

Even though she travels and tours, she seems like a typical teen, with just that extra spark! Catch her at the Leland Cultural Art Center on March 24th, 10am-2pm.

Two Business Expos

First Annual Belville / Leland Small Business Expo & Chamber Expo! Both March 3rd. BY AMI BROWN

T

he Belville/Leland Small Business Expo is free and open to the public! 30+ local businesses and vendors will have their information and products to present to the public at Blossoms Banquet Room. March 3, 11:00am - 2:00pm. This is a great opportunity to meet your local business owners!

Lara Bair, organizer answered a few of my questions about the Expo:

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PUT THIS EVENT TOGETHER?

I began this venture last summer, to help promote our small, local businesses, in the most cost-effective manner possible. As our area continues to see unprecedented growth, keeping our small businesses is vital to our community. The owners and employees are our family, our friends and our neighbors.

HOW HAS THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY RESPONDED TO THE EXPO?

The response has been overwhelming! I have completely booked our space, and in less than 5 days from the time that it was announced! I am still encouraging local business owners to attend. They can still network, meet other business owners and potential customers.

WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT FOR PEOPLE TO BUY LOCAL?

My mission is to help not only sustain our small businesses, but help them be even more successful. As more chain businesses move in, our small businesses will have trouble competing, in part due to financial reasons. That’s where my Facebook page comes into play. Our local businesses can advertise there for free, and I also try to post daily about different businesses. I would encourage residents and customers to not only shop locally, but share their great experiences with everyone they can. Social media makes that a very simple process now.

LELAND AND BELVILLE ARE GROWING RAPIDLY... HOW DOES THIS AFFECT SMALL BUSINESS?

I began planning this expo in January. During our previous small business events, people expressed an interest in having personal space to set up material, and of-

fer direct sales. This expo offers a unique experience for both business owners, and residents. They have an opportunity to meet each other, make their experiences more personal, and it will be like a one stop shopping experience! Here’s a list of confirmed businesses:

BLUEBERRY SCONES INGREDIENTS 1¾ cup all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons sugar 1 tablespoon baking powder ¼ teaspoon salt 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, sliced into pats ½ cup dried blueberries 5 tablespoons milk 1 egg, plus 1 more beaten to brush on top

DIRECTIONS

Heat the oven to 375F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Whisk the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt together in a large bowl. Rub in the butter with your fingers until it’s all worked in. Mix in the blueberries.

In a small bowl or measuring cup, whisk the milk and one egg together. Pour the milk mixture in with the dry ingredients and gently mix until the liquid is fully blended. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface. Knead the dough a few times and pat it into a disc about ¾” thick. Divide the dough into 8 equal wedges -- transfer the wedges to the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each scone. Bake the scones for 15-20 minutes, until the tops are lightly browned. Serve warm with butter!

GUINNESS CHOCOLATE CAKE INGREDIENTS 1 cup and 2 tbsp unsalted butter 1 cup Guinness ž cup Dutch process cocoa sifted 2 + 1/4 cup all purpose flour, sifted 2 tsp. baking soda 2 cup sugar 2 medium eggs 2/3 cup sour cream 1 tbsp. good quality vanilla extract Frosting 300 g (1 + 1/3 cup) cream cheese 150 g (1+1/2 c.) powdered sugar, sifted 150 ml (2/3 c.) cream, whipped Instructions Preheat oven to 180C/350F.

DIRECTIONS

Add butter, cocoa and Guinness to a saucepan. Warm over a medium heat and stir until melted. Set aside for 5 to 10 minutes to cool slightly. Add flour, baking soda and sugar to a large mixing bowl and mix together well. Pour in the Guinness/cocoa/butter mixture, lightly combine, add the vanilla, eggs and sour cream and beat everything together until well combined. The batter should be thick and dark chocolate in color.

Pour into a greased angel food cake pan (or another straight-sided tube pan) and cook in the oven for 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes, or until a skewer comes out clean from the center of the cake. *Note: This cake is very moist inside, so use your judgment regarding the skewer test. Do not leave in the oven until the cake has totally dried out. If you make this in a regular angel food cake pan, you should start checking for doneness at least 15 minutes early. Cool completely.

FROSTING INSTRUCTIONS

Place the cream cheese into the bowl of a mixer and beat on a low-medium speed using a whisk attachment (I find a paddle attachment tends to over-beat the cheese). Whisk until the cheese is smooth and there are no big lumps remaining. Gradually, using a large spoon, add in the sifted powdered sugar and beat gently to combine. After 2 to 3 minutes, stop the machine, scrape any excess frosting from the sides of the bowl and beat on medium speed until lump free. Remove bowl from mixer and gently fold in the whipped cream, mixing to fully combine. Place cooled cake on a cake stand and add the frosting, spreading out just to the edge without going over the side (never go over the sides of the cake) The idea is to capture the essence and simplicity of a pint of Guinness. Magnolia Greens Gem Charming home on Golf Course STORY BY: AMI BROWN

I

f you ever wanted to live on a golf course, in a quiet community minutes from downtown Wilmington and half hour to the beach... well you just might be jealous of Cindy and Steve. They bought this Magnolia Greens brick charmer brand new in 2015.

Cindy Killian and Steve Karch have been a couple for almost nine years. Even though Cindy grew up in Wilmington, they met in Raleigh while they were living and working there. They took the plunge a few years ago and sold both their houses and moved to Leland. Steve always wanted to live on a golf course, and Magnolia Greens has 27 holes! That’s three nine-hole courses to choose from. When they found this home, they knew it was the one! They also fell in love with the detailed ceiling in the living room

(Coffered) and since they have a boat and LOVE the water, being close to the ocean was also a huge factor. The screened in back porch is what really sold them on this house. It overlooks the golf course and feels rural, even though Magnolia Greens is situated in a vibrant and growing area of Leland. Magnolia Greens is turning 20 years old this year, and offers an established neighborhood, but still feels new, fresh and modern. Magnolia Greens has 1100 homes, and possibly a few lots that have not

been built on yet. Their 6 1/2 year old rescued ChiWeenie, (a Chi-Weenie is a Chihuahua/ Dachshund) named Phoebe agrees. Her favorite spot is on Steve’s lap, the oversized footstool or the back of the couch on her blanket. Since Steve and Cindy both had homes they sold and they had both inherited family furniture too - there was a surplus to bring together into one house. This was a bit of challenge to make the space feel connected and

not like four households. The antique family furniture blends nicely with the newer pieces, and the whole decor is bright and cheerful.

HOMESTYLE The living room, formal dining space, kitchen and breakfast nook are all open plan. This space opens to the sliding doors to the back porch bringing the outdoors IN! A mix of different woods, fabrics, designer ceilings, and area rugs define the spaces nicely without walls. This formal dining room is elegant and cozy. The view when you step inside immediately draws your attention of the back porch - the real focus of this house. Light streams in above the colorful furniture and patterns. Cindy’s office is painted in girly pink, and accented with black and white. I love this room - it feels so cozy, stylish and it’s full of personality! The HUGE over-sized chair was custom made, and it’s something that any avid reader would be jealous to have. I love the Parisian flair - pillow with Paris scenes, and photos all over the walls. Cindy created this space just for her, and I think she may have missed her calling as a decorator. This looks straight out of a home decor magazine!

biz q&a Spring Into All In Bloom Garden Center Offers Year Round Options! BY KASS FINCHER

B

usiness partners Kim Everhart and Tina York live in Oak Island and operate All In Bloom Garden Center and Landscapes on Howe Street downtown in Southport. They visited with me recently during the winter break and talked about their plans for 2018.

YOU JUST OPENED IN SEPTEMBER LAST YEAR; HOW ARE THINGS GOING? “Wonderful, we have been very blessed, we really have! Southport and Oak Island have been very good to us. We’ve found a niche here and it seems to be working really well for us. We each have our strengths and we complement each other. Kim runs the landscaping side; Tina runs the retail side.” IS THIS A NEW VENTURE FOR YOU OR HAVE YOU BEEN IN THIS BUSINESS IN THE PAST? “We’ve been in the garden center business for awhile. We moved here five years ago from Asheboro. Once here, we worked for Bridgers Garden Center. After they closed, Kim went to manage a local garden center here and worked there for about three seasons. Tina worked for several farmers’ markets – including Maters and Taters and Summerlin Farms. This past year, we just figured it was as good a time as any to take that leap of faith and go for it, and we’ve been very blessed.” WHAT’S DIFFERENT ABOUT YOUR PAST EXPERIENCES AND WHAT YOU’RE OFFERING HERE NOW? “We learned from those past experiences and now we bring our knowledge to this. You can come here with questions and we’ll give you answers. We really try to focus on customer service and teaching our customers the best plans for their garden, lawn maintenance, whatever they need.”

AND THAT KNOWLEDGE CREATES LOYALTY WITH YOUR CUSTOMERS, I WOULD THINK?

“Yes we think so. We’re developing a very loyal customer base. And we appreciate that so much. We can’t compete with the box stores on price but what we can give you is a better product, knowledge, and really, really good customer service.” WHAT IS YOUR SERVICE AREA? “We’ll go as far as Leland, Shallotte, Ocean Isle. We do business in Bald Head too. We like to go wherever our clients need us.”

I SEE YOUR SIGNS ALL OVER TOWN. IS LANDSCAPING A BIG PART OF WHAT YOU DO? “Yes, it’s a large part and we’ve been very blessed on that aspect too. We had several jobs in January and February, and it’s really unheard of in the landscaping industry to be working in the wintertime. We do all aspects of landscaping – from design to installation and maintaining those properties too.” So what would you say are your primary products and services? “Landscaping is at least half of what we do. Of course we’ve not been here a year yet. We have nothing to gauge by except our pumpkin patch last fall. If our pumpkin patch is any indication of what our spring is going to be like, we’ll be killing it. Tina will need more than four staff here to help out. The pumpkin patch was phenomenal – we sold over 3000 pumpkins. It was so much fun – the kids and even the adults got excited. Everybody loves fall and the pumpkins.” HOW MANY STAFF WORK WITH YOU? “We have a landscaping crew of five men. Tina will have a staff of four working at the retail store. We had just returned from a gift mart trade show in Atlanta, and we have lots of new garden and yard art items for the store – unique things you won’t find anywhere else.

HOW DO YOU THINK THE COLD WEATHER WE HAD THIS YEAR WILL AFFECT YOUR BUSINESS?

“Our bitter cold snaps were tough. People will probably lose some plants and have to replant. On the Lantana, you should check on what variety it is. If it’s the New Gold or Chapel Hill variety, you might get it back. But the only true Lantana perennial is Miss Huff – even with this bitter weather, though, it might have gotten hurt.”

WHAT PLANTS WILL YOU OFFER IN THE SPRING?

“The whole lot will be covered – annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees. We’ll have a lot of native plants too. We’re a full service garden center – and lots of unique yard art that nobody else here will have.”

16 Leland Magazine /MARCH 2018 / www.LelandMag.com

What challenges have you run into so far? “Actually, running out of space is a challenge. We want to do so much. We do have a good amount of space outside but we’re limited inside. Finding good help is a challenge too – every small business is challenged with finding good, dependable help. Any people with plant knowledge out there, please come to see us!” DO YOU HAVE ANY FUNNY STORIES, THINGS THAT HAVE GONE AWRY? “Moving this building here was kind of crazy. It was a prefab, empty shell built to our specifications by Leonard Utility Buildings in Wilmington. They brought it down on a truck in August; the truck got stuck up out out here on the lot maybe four or five times. What they thought was going to take about an hour took about half a day to finally get this building in place. The building was precariously hanging halfway on the truck and halfway off; we didn’t know how we were going to do this. We laugh about it now – but it wasn’t so funny then.” THE BEADED WOOD ON THE WALLS AND CEILING INSIDE THE STORE IS UNIQUE. WHERE DID YOU GET THAT? “It’s from an old house in Castle Hayne that was built in the late 1800s. The lady lived there until she was over 100 years old. A friend of mine – the owner of North Carolina Plantation Antiques – found it for us. The different colors are because the wood came from different rooms – her den, her bedroom, her kitchen. And the wood on the floor is from a tobacco barn in Surry County.”

WHAT WAS YOUR VISION IN CREATING THE INTERIOR SPACE?

“We wanted people to walk into the store and not notice how small the building is, but to say, ‘Oh my God this is very cool.’ It’s nice to reclaim things and find new uses for them that add a creative touch.” WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS ON PLANT OFFERINGS – DO YOU PLAN TO OFFER ANYTHING DIFFERENT FROM OTHERS? “Our main thing is to have plants out here

that will do well in our coastal environment. We try to focus on what the customer is going to buy that he or she can take home and not worry about it – something that will really thrive for them. We both know what works in our climate and what doesn’t. There are a lot of elements here that people don’t even think of – salt air, wind, sand. The humidity here is rough on plants. We used to have customers come to us at the other garden center and say ‘I want a lilac bush.’ And I would always tell them that they just won’t make it here because of the humidity. The heat won’t hurt them – it’s the humidity that does it. Same thing with peonies – people want them all the time; they don’t do well here, they struggle.”

WHAT ARE THE BEST PLANTS YOU WOULD RECOMMEND IN YOUR DESIGNS? “There are a lot of plants that do well here. Everybody loves hydrangeas – they do well with the right varieties. They’re nostalgic favorites, reminding us of grandma’s garden. Of course the drift roses and knock-outs also do fantastic here, while standard roses cannot – they get disease ridden. We’ll have tons of perennials that will do well here, and evergreens as well. It’s important when you do a design to consider all the seasons. When we go in and design a landscape, we know you have to do more than just put in that ‘wow factor,’ because in the wintertime the customer will have nothing. You’ve got to do a mix with evergreens too.”

WHAT PLANS DO YOU HAVE TO ENHANCE YOUR BUSINESS? “We are still very new. We want to build relationships with realtors and builders for referrals this spring. We’re very excited about our potential – we have great visibility and we hope to stay here quite awhile.” It’s clear that Kim and Tina are committed and know their stuff – I’m sure they are here to stay. The pumpkin patch was just the beginning. All In Bloom will bring their creative touch to our area and make Southport and surrounding area gardens even more beautiful.

cheers Guinness Review

Favorite Irish beer recommended any time of the year STORY BY JEFF STITES

I

t’s St. Patrick’s Day Month and I’m writing about Guinness. Sorry, but if you don’t understand why and completely agree, you might as well stop reading now.

This is as much a love letter as a review. I’m a huge Guinness fan. If you aren’t yet, give it a try. Don’t be afraid of the color, beer isn’t supposed to be transparent. And don’t assume that because it’s dark it’s “heavy.” In truth, Guinness Draught (and it’s pronounced “draft” by the way), is one of the lightest beers you’ll find. It has an alcohol content similar to American mass-produced light beers like Miller, Bud and Coors, it has fewer calories than even most “light” beers, and it is actually so truly light that it will float atop about any other liquid, from other beers to even Champagne. That’s called a Velvet Hammer, by the way, and I don’t recommend it. For years Guinness used “Guinness Is Good For You” as a company slogan, and while that can’t be scientifically proven, I hardily believe it. Anyhow, since Guinness is Irish and we all like to think of ourselves as Irish this time of year, let’s dive into the Guinness goodness.

GUINNESS DRAUGHT STOUT 4.2% ABV

The Label Says: Upon opening, the famous round plastic widget in every can unleashes nitrogen through the beer, creating the creamy head and iconic surge that’s distinctly Guinness. My Take: What follows that label blurb is detailed instructions on how to pour your Guinness Draught correctly. Pay attention and whatever you do, don’t drink this from the can like a savage. We are civilized folk, remember. This is the Guinness folk’s best attempt at recreating their pride and joy….the draught Guinness pint. It isn’t perfect. I can’t put my finger on why but it just doesn’t quite measure up to Guinness poured from a proper tap in a proper pub. But until I install a proper pub in my house, and mark my words, someday I will, this is a very passable substitute.

GUINNESS ORIGINAL 4.2% ABV

The Label Says: Guinness Original is inspired by Arthur Guinness’ original stout recipe, first introduced in Dublin around 1800 as a premium porter. Still sold today in the UK and now available in the United States, this brew delivers a rounded flavor of bitter and sweet with a dry finish. My Take: At only 4.2% abv, this is pretty much in line with your big American light beers, but it tastes oh so much better. This is perfect for social situations where you need to stay on your game, for nights where you plan to drink more than a few beers, or just about any other time. It doesn’t pack the powerful flavors of some of the beers to follow, but it is malty with balanced bitterness and sweetness and it tasted the way Arthur Guinness intended, which means quite a bit. It’s also a great choice for cooking as it makes a fine addition to soups and stews.

GUINNESS FOREIGN EXTRA STOUT 7.5% ABV

The Label Says: Foreign Extra Stout is brewed with generous hops and roasted barley for a full-flavored taste of dark chocolate, dried fruits and caramel. Originally developed for global export from Ireland, the addition of extra hops ensured this stout would always arrive in perfect condition. My Take: This is one of the heartiest of the Guinness Family of beers. As the brewer’s description mentioned, this beer was made to ship all over the world at time when sailing ships and voyages were often measured in weeks. Both the roasted malt that gives the beer its very dark color and the addition of extra hops serve to mask the degradation of the beer that can happen under extended time in the tropical heat. As an aside, this is where the term IPA comes from as well. IPA is an abbreviation

of India Pale Ale which was the English Pale Ale shipped to the British colony of India. It was hopped more than the domestic version for the same reasons as the Guinness export. But what this leaves us, in the much more climate controlled and fossil fuel-powered 21st century, is a beer that is chock full of all the deliciousness that makes beer great. It’s got hops, like the IPAs, but the malt isn’t overpowered by the bitterness. Rather everything is in perfect balance. Granted, it’s not what most would choose after a sweaty afternoon mowing the lawn, but as beers go, this one is hard to beat.

GUINNESS 200TH ANNIVERSARY EXPORT STOUT 6% ABV

The Label Says: This year marks the 200th anniversary of the first Guinness export from Ireland to the U.S. To commemorate this momentous occasion we brewed this beer, inspired by entries from our 1817 brewing logs. In 1817 Guinness was using Black Patent malt to give its stouts their deep dark black color. This new brew is complex and smooth with balance of roast and sweet chocolate malt. My Take: Just as dark (if not even darker) but sweeter and with a lower alcohol content than the Guinness Export, this special edition brew is almost as perfect. At only 6% abv, this one is the perfect after lawn mowing beer.

this same special stout from Ireland into Belgium through the vibrant port of Antwerp. This is the first time we’re making it available for general release in America. My Take: First of all, this is the most fun beer name to say ever in the history of beer names. Antwerpen. Go ahead, say it out loud. Antwerpen. It’s awesome isn’t it? Now wait til you try this beer. Be forewarned, though, this isn’t a beer for amateurs or new beer drinkers or those who consider Bud Light to be beer. Antwerpen is, to sound a bit beer snobby for a minute, very complex. It doesn’t so much blend flavors as just send all of them packing onto your tongue at one to fight it out. And the brewery’s description is correct, the finish lasts forever. And I’m still a bit sad when it’s over.

GUINNESS ANTWERPEN STOUT 8% ABV

The Label Says: This 8% ABV stout has long been a secret pleasure among beer connoisseurs and indeed our own brewers, who value the mouth-watering intensity of roasted malt, smoked wood and dark chocolate notes, not to mention its excellent and seemingly endless finish. Since 1944 we have been exclusively exporting www.LelandMag.com / MARCH 2018 / Leland Magazine 19

savor The Joyce Brings the Irish The Joyce Pub and Grill is local favorite

I

STORY BY KASS FINCHER

rish novelist and poet James Joyce appreciated the allure of a glass of spirits. “The light music of whiskey falling into a glass – an agreeable interlude,”he wrote.

Chicken Tenders: 5 tenders dredged in our house breader, fried and tossed in one of our sauces or dry rubs. Served with hand cut fries

In Leland’s Brunswick Forest, the Joyce Pub and Grill pays homage to the poet and his Irish culture with an authentic, creative menu and a variety of beers from around the world. Opening in May of 2016, the Pub has enjoyed an enthusiastic response from the community. Manager Laura Richardson runs the place with her fiance, owner Scott Moore. Moore also owns Flights – the wine bar beside the Pub – and Slainte in Southport. The wine bar Flights relocated from the Southport area at about the same time as the Joyce opened. Moore is originally from England, so he strives to provide the authentic food, drink and atmosphere of the pubs he grew up with. His strategy must be working; the customer base is growing and loyal. “We’ve been very happy with our response – we’ve got everything right here in Brunswick Forest,” says Richardson. “People especially love the big patio – it’s a great outdoor spot in warm weather.” The patio is huge, and starting this month it will host live music on Fridays and Saturdays, continuing until October. “The kickoff is Saint Patrick’s Day,” Richardson

relates. “We go all out, with bagpipes, bounce houses for the kids, swag for everyone. It’s a lot of fun.” The Pub employs about 25 people, most of whom have been working there since it opened. They share a kitchen with Flights next door. Chef Earl Rush and assistant Marby Jurkovac concoct the authentic Irish dishes, some of which have a unique twist. The homemade Buffalo Sauce has bleu cheese as an ingredient, giving it an interesting creamy texture. It’s the main attraction in the Buffalo Chicken Dip, a perennial favorite. Another popular appetizer is Pork Nachos, made with homemade jalapeno beer cheese, homemade barbecue sauce, onions and tomatoes. The House Salad and Cobb Salad are newly reinvented and very popular. Also fairly new to the menu are some of the burgers and specialty sandwiches. The Buffalo Burger is eight ounces of Angus beef topped with buffalo sauce, bleu cheese, jalapenos and fried onion straws. The Forest Chicken sandwich (named for Brunswick Forest, not free-range chickens in the woods) is grilled and topped with feta, sauteed spinach, roasted red peppers and a pesto aioli on a kaiser roll. The Bacon

FOREST BURGER: 8oz Certified Angus Beef burger topped with feta, sautéed spinach, roasted red peppers, lettuce, tomato, onion and pesto aioli, served with hand cut fries

Jam Burger is unique, with a homemade sweet/spicy jam made from bacon, onions and a touch of alcohol, of course. Entrees like the Bacon Jam Meatloaf, Fish and Chips, Shepherd’s Pie and Steak and Guinness Pie (on a puffed pastry shell) round out the most popular choices on the menu. And why not finish off the meal with homemade Irish Creme on the rocks? The Joyce is open every day of the week. Wednesday nights are for Trivia, a popular pastime for their patrons. And Sunday brunch from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. is a new and welcome addition. The long hours and multiple restaurant locations keep Moore and Richardson busy, but they still manage to keep up with their two children – Ethan and Harper, ages 3 and 1 ½. “If I could bottle their

energy, Lord, I’d be a rich person,” laughs Richardson. When asked what makes the Pub special, Richardson relates, “We just aim to have a good time; it’s a super laid-back atmosphere. We’re the only Irish pub in the area, and we have great support from the community. We strive to be authentic; we play Irish music all day every day, which sometimes drives me crazy,” she says with a laugh. Beyond the Leland locals, a number of Irish residents from Wilmington enjoy patronizing the Joyce. They must certainly enjoy the Irish lilts, not to mention the bacon jam burgers.

t HOU YING: TU TU

Friday March 23, 2018 Showtime: 7:30pm Doors: 6:30pm Hou Ying, the company’s artistic director, was trained in traditional Chinese classical dance, folk dance, ballet, traditional Chinese opera, and martial arts. In the United

States, she also studied dance techniques from dance masters such as Martha Graham, Jose Limon, Merce Cunningham and Trisha Brown. Hou Ying has devoted her life to exploring how to integrate the eastern rhythm and spirit that includes the natural movement of the body with the western post-modern dance techniques that involve the deconstruction of the body. As a result, she has formed a unique and highly recognizable dance form — where the idea of body-mind holism is the key to showing how consciousness drives the mind, the mind in turn drives the body and the body reflects the mind. The piece, Tu Tu, de-constructs the way the body moves, by using release techniques and four dimensional spatial recognition to continually explore and investigate how physical movement is influenced by time and space.

Eight Ways to Measure Progress Beyond the Scale STORY BY BRIAN TULLY, MS, EP-C

I

n my article last month, I suggested that the scale could be one of the contributors to your lack of weight loss and that using the scale to track progress was not the best way to go. The better way to track your progress would be to use the eight measurement methods listed below.

To use them properly you will need to use them at the start of an exercise program and check them regularly. I find monthly to be a decent amount of time to allow for some progress to be seen and still keep you motivated.

Energy Levels – How is your stamina level during the workout and in daily activities, do you need less rest between exercises; are you able to play with your kids or grandkids for longer stretches before needing a break; are you feeling more

This is Dave (Dave voted for us to win the MAGGIES ... AND WE DID!)

alert and focused. How to measure: each evening make a notation of how your energy levels were that day; this can be a simple rating on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being excellent. Aches and Pains – a proper workout

regimen will create more strength and stability around the joints, which will contribute to more efficient movement; this combination of improved stability and efficient movement should decrease the aches and pains of specific movements and every day

fitness life. How to measure: take note at the start of the program of any specific aches and pains you have and rate each of these aches and pains on a scale of 1 to 10. It is still progress if the ache diminishes from an 8 to a 6, not just when it is gone all together, which is the ultimate progress. Flexibility & Range of Motion – this is really about freedom of movement. Proper flexibility and range of motion keeps the body from having to fight itself and compensate to make the movement happen. Both of which create aches and pains, injury, and diminished energy levels. How to measure: using specific tests you can actually measure and track over time, the range of motion and ease of movement at each of the major sections of the body (hips, shoulder, thoracic spine, neck, etc.). Body Composition – when you step on the scale you are measuring your total mass, but your mass is made up of lean mass (non-fat mass) and fat mass (body fat). The general goal is to lower the fat mass while increasing the lean mass. And if you are successful at this, the scale may

not reflect much of anything. For example, let’s say your body composition measurement shows that you lost 4 lbs of fat mass and gained 4 lbs of lean mass. The scale would show a net change of 0 lbs lost; when in fact you made a significant, positive change to your body. How to measure: there are several tools and methods of measuring your body composition that range in level of accuracy. However even with the least accurate method, if you keep the variables consistent, you will be able to track trends over time to insure that you are moving in the right direction. Strength/Muscular Endurance – the ability to overcome a greater amount of resistance by moving more weight one time, move the same amount of weight more times, hold a position for a longer period of time, or need less rest between sets. These are all measures of progress that create a stronger, more durable body. How to measure: track your workouts; write down the exercises you do along with the amount of resistance, number of reps, and amount of rest between sets.

Try to match or beat the last performance each time. Visual Appearance – the changes you are seeing in the mirror, the comments that friends and family members are making (they tend to see it before you do), the way your clothes are fitting. How to measure: take pictures in the same bathing suit and compare them side by side over time; or take note how a specific pair of jeans is fitting from month to month. Circumference Measurements – as you increase lean mass and decrease fat mass, different areas of the body will expand or contract. Taking a direct site measurement of multiple site locations shows exactly what is happening. How to measure: use a cloth tape measure at the different circumference sites (waist, hips, thigh, chest, arm, etc.) and record the measurements for comparison. Scale – yes the scale is still a valid measurement tool although I vilified it in my previous article. But it is just that…a measurement tool, that when used as a part of a progress tracking plan with many other

elements can help paint the whole picture. It is when it is used as your sole measurement of progress that problems can arise. In order to see progress in these items, you must take note of where you started and check your progress on a regular basis. Be specific as possible with each of the items above to ensure you will recognize all progress being made. Some of them mention using specific measurement tools like a tape measure or simply taking pictures, others will be more subjective and require honest ratings. However using the above elements as a more holistic view of your progress will shed light on the fact that your exercise is improving your body and your life, even if the scale does not show the numbers you want to see right away. Focus on the positives and stay the course. The better you feel, the more you will move. The real progress will be found in your consistency over the long haul, which will allow you to be fit to handle all your life has to offer.
