CURRENTS Cultivating Community Learning and Growing In Leland’s Community Garden STORY BY LISA STITES

P

lanting seeds, watering and feeding tiny shoots, and nurturing them into healthy plants can be a very satisfying experience. But for anyone living in an apartment or somewhere else without access to a yard, gardening may seem out of reach. Community gardens on the Leland Town Hall campus provide needed green space for residents while also enhancing the landscape of municipal property. Senior Administrative Assistant Laurie White works with the Leland Parks and Recreation Department, and helps keep an eye on the community gardens, though she credits Recreation Supervisor Amy Wells with making the idea for the

gardens blossom back in 2011. There are six raised beds, each approximately 4 feet by 8 feet, and each being tended by a seasonal gardener. Each bed has a primary gardener who is responsible, but many of them elicit help, White

explained. Once a resident takes on a bed, that person agrees to maintain the garden, through watering, cultivating and weeding, according to the Town’s website. Gardeners are also encouraged to use alternatives to chemical pesticides. “Many people acquire a bed because their living arrangements don’t permit them to have a garden,” White said. “Some tenants are teaching their children how to plant, harvest, and eat food they have grown themselves. Others say working a garden is better than therapy!” The gardens do get used year-round, and though it’s chilly and sometimes rainy this time of year, gardens are going strong with herbs like rosemary and parsley, and winter vegetables like kale and rhubarb. Other gardeners, White said, are beginning to work the soil to get things ready for spring plantings. So what’s most popular among the community gardeners? White said that lots of people grow tomatoes, but there’s also lettuce, broccoli, collards and even corn. The Town is encouraging growth beyond the gardens this spring, with its Free Plant Giveaway as part of Earth Day festivities on April 18. The event starts at 10 am in Founders Park, and will feature programs aimed at educating residents about

the Earth and how to protect it. Visit http://bit.ly/LelGarden to learn more about Leland’s Community Garden program.

Maritime Flea Market Is A Rite Of Spring

A Great Time To Unload What You Don’t Need and Find What You Do

S

pring is almost here; that’s when many of us get the itch to do some spring cleaning. And if you’re a boat owner, you might need to do some of that to get your vessel ready to enjoy the season. Get rid of boat supplies you don’t need; make a list of things you need to add. And we have just the venue for you boaters to do just that – the Third Annual Marine Flea Market coming up April 4 at the Yacht Basin in Southport. Sponsored by the Southport Yacht Club (SYC), the Marine Flea Market will connect boaters with others who want to buy or sell their stuff. Anyone can participate as a seller; each space is just $25, with the fee going to charity. This year’s charity is the Oak Island Water Rescue team. And if you don’t need boat supplies, there will be other vendors selling nautical products and crafts that you need to come and check out. There will even be a raffle for gift certificates donated by Mr. P’s, Oliver’s and Loco Jo’s. The event runs from 8 am to 4 pm – with great food and entertainment to make it a fun day. Chris Webster, commodore for the Southport Yacht Club, describes how the event began. “Several years ago, we came up with the idea,” he says. “We realized we all have a lot of stuff on our boats that we probably don’t need. I looked it up and there’s this flea market in Florida that’s enormous – a football field full of people. So we moved forward. We decided to do it right in front of where many of us have our boats – at the Southport Marina. And a big thanks to the Marina; they allowed us to have it there for the first two years.” “That first year we had maybe 19 spaces with vendors. We were able to come up with $350 to donate to local charities. We decided to do it again!” He says. “Last year we had over 40 vendors and we selected Childswish to receive the proceeds. We came up with $1500 to donate to them. That’s a good trend!” Norm Brown, leader of the SYC team planning the event this year, plans to continue that trend. “We’ll be in the Yacht Basin this year, which allows us to offer 120 spaces for sellers, each 14’ x 14’,” he explains. “We hope to have 45 retail vendors and the rest for boaters who want to

sell their stuff.” SYC team member Cliff Lill reiterated that point. “It’s all about being a flea market for boaters, and also raising as much as we can for charity,” he says. “We chose Oak Island Water Rescue (OIWR) for the charity this year – we wanted to go with a local, marine related organization.” A good choice. Tony Young, OIWR chief, describes his group’s work. “The Oak Island Fire Department saw a need and started the team as a separate organization 22 years ago,” he says. “The Coast Guard donated two boats – that we still have – and the town donated a boat as well. Today we have three boats and three trucks. We have a 10’ Zodiac inflatable boat that we launch in the surf, just drag it out there. We also have a larger 14’ Zodiac with a bigger outboard in case we have to make a long run in the waterway, ocean or inlets. Occasionally a boat will ground on

turned over sometimes; it always gets pulled up on the beach. For a new trailer and boat, we think we can get one for around $12,000. It needs to be the best quality because of the wear and tear it takes. “The third boat is a 14’ aluminum Jon boat that we can take into the marsh if necessary to help with kayakers. Long term I’d like to replace that with a hovercraft, which will cost around $60,000. We’re hoping to apply for a grant to help us acquire that boat.” No doubt the Oak Island Water Rescue team deserves our community’s support. If you’d like to be a part of the Market, reserve a space to sell your stuff

by contacting Norm Brown at normbrown1970@gmail.com. You can also simply donate boating supplies to the donation table; contact Norm if you have something to donate. For the whole community, this free event is not to be missed! Be sure to come out to the Marine Flea Market on April 4, rain or shine, and check out the boating supplies and nautical products, buy raffle tickets and enjoy the food and entertainment! It’s a fact; everyone loves a good flea market – it’s always where you make interesting finds. And maybe at this one you’ll bump into some of your neighbors hawking their boat stuff.

Jaybird Shoals and we can go out there and pull them off. “When people call 911, the central command will contact us if we need to be involved. We have the same radios that the police and fire department carry; we’re on the fire department channel, they go to all our calls because they’re also paramedics. “In the last two years we’ve had 50 plus call-outs; six of which were what we call ‘saves,’ because if we didn’t show up someone would be seriously injured or worse. We’re on call 24/7; with 20 members we always have someone available to answer the call.” Young goes on to describe their financial needs. “We really need to replace our Zodiacs – they’re old; they’re patched up so we can keep them floating,” he explains. “The surf boat gets beat up a lot. That boat gets www.LelandMag.com /March /March 2020 / Leland Magazine 7

Neil Simon’s Plaza Suite Is Coming To Brunswick Little Theatre

Two Steps To Better Fitness Goals Focus On The Things You Can Control

Let me explain. Suppose I ask you what your fitness or health goal is. Most of you would say something related to losing a certain number of pounds, or fitting into a certain pant size, achieving a desired blood sugar number, or completing a running race. All of these are worthy goals, but they are all outcome goals. Outcome goals are ultimately things that are out of our control. When we focus solely on that goal, we lose sight of the things we do have control over, the things that can get us to our outcome goal, our behaviors. Setting the right kinds of goals, will exponentially increase your odds of succeeding. Below is a 2-step process to help you turn bad goals into good ones. And good goals equal great results!

Turn Outcome Goals into Behavior Goals First let’s get more specific about the difference between an Outcome Goal and a Behavior Goal. An Outcome Goal is something you want to happen, such as losing a certain amount of weight. A Behavior Goal is something you would do to move toward the desired outcome, such as eating smaller portions of balanced meals, or exercising daily. There is nothing wrong with wanting an outcome like a lower body weight, but we often can’t control the outcome because so many factors can affect it. Behavior goals, however, allow us to focus on the things we can control…the actions, not the end results. Here is an example of what turning an Outcome Goal into Behavior Goals might look like. Let’s say you want your outcome to be losing 20 pounds. In order to achieve this outcome, you will need to implement certain behaviors like regular exercise, controlling calorie intake, managing stress, and improving sleep. Turning these behaviors into goals might look like the following: • Behavior Goal #1 – add exercise

into your daily routine four days each week • Behavior Goal #2 – add a protein source and fruit/vegetable to each meal • Behavior Goal #3 – add a 5-minute break each day for breathing exercises • Behavior Goal #4 – add a repeatable nightly wind down routine for bed You may implement all the above Behavior Goals at once, or you can gradually add the behaviors in one at a time after you have mastered working each one into your routine. For example, you may spend two weeks on Behavior Goal #1 before adding in Behavior Goal #2. Then maybe you spend three weeks with a combination of the first two goals before adding in the third goal, and so on. Everyone is different, you don’t have to force yourself into a set plan. The important part is you feel successful and confident with each goal and you build upon these success to keep moving forward.

Turn Stop Goals into Do Goals A Stop Goal is something you don’t want, something that pushes you away from your current pain. For instance, you would say something like “I don’t want to feel out of shape” or “I don’t want my knees to hurt”. A Do Goal is something you want, something that moves you towards a better more desired outcome. Here you would say something like “I want to feel confident and strong” or “I want to live without pain”. So why are Do Goals better than Stop Goals? From a psychological perspective Stop Goals are counterproductive, because when you tell someone to stop something it almost guarantees they will want to keep doing it. Even if it is something you are telling yourself. Plus, whenever you are focused on a Stop Goal, it

Let Us Help You Achieve the Lawn of Your Dreams

FITNESS reinforces the feeling of failure when you slip up and do the thing you should be stopping. And when you feel like you failed, it makes it more challenging to stay the course and get back on track. A Do Goal on the other hand will give you something to focus on doing instead of the old habit you are trying to stop. And every time you stick to a Do Goal, you feel better, successful, and inspired to keep moving forward. Implementing Do Goals instead of Stop Goals might look like “eating more cut up fruits and vegetables” instead of “no junk food”. Or instead of “no soda” focus on “drinking a glass of water with each meal”. Or instead of “no sitting and watching TV” try “I will take a walk after dinner”. If you notice, you are suggesting basically the same thing, but you are being more specific about doing the positive. And you should absolutely pay attention to this. Every time you do something that moves you forward, you

are making progress…no matter how small of a step you think it is. Continue to focus on the process, the behaviors. Celebrate each of these little wins that make up the process and the desired outcome will ulti-

mately take care of itself. As always, please feel free to reach out with questions or comments – Brian@BetterTogetherFitness.com

BIZ Q&A Ace Is The Place

A Leland Staple Opens A New Store In Southport STORY AND PHOTOS BY KASS FINCHER

Husband and wife team Shannon and Landon Barker, owners of the Leland Ace Hardware, recently opened a second location in Southport. We spoke to Landon about both locations and what it’s like being “the helpful hardware folks.” 1. You just opened in Southport; how long have you been open in Leland? Where do you and Shannon live?

Shannon and I opened up Leland Ace Hardware January 2, 2011 So this is our 9th year running the store. We live right in downtown Wilmington so we love that we can go right over the bridge and be at both stores.

2. How is business going for both locations? How many employees are at each? We are still in the early stages for Southport but we feel so far so good. Currently we have 10 employees in Leland and 6 in Southport. A few of our staff members will go between stores.

3. I understand these are franchises; can you explain a bit about how that works? How does the parent company support your operation?

Ace Hardware is a franchise but it is also a cooperative. Ace retailers are the owners of the corporation and can customize offerings based on customer needs. Owners reap the benefits of a global brand with collective buying power with independent ownership. Retailers pay no royalty fees and a portion of the profits get distributed back to them each year.

4. We all love a good hardware store and Ace is the place “with the helpful hardware folks.” I love how they changed the slogan to include us ladies. How would you describe Ace’s approach to helping their customers?

Ace knows that our customers have a choice and they come to our stores to get the help they need on our products and projects. We want to get you everything you need to get your project done so we try to ask you questions so you can walk

out with everything you need. If we don’t have it, we want to get you to the right place that does. Shannon and I have a slogan we put on our shirts that says “Going the Extra Mile” -something we strive to have our staff do for each customer walking in the door. 5. What is your background;

is this a new industry for you?

Shannon has been in the hardware business since he was 22 years old; this is his expertise. He helped start the store in Leland for the previous owner - BAME ACE HARDWARE - back in 1999. I have grown up in the residential construction business my whole life so my knowledge of building goes hand in hand with home improvement 6. Do you have plans to be

involved in any community events or causes in either location? Yes, with having two kids of our own we are very active in our community schools. We are booster club members for local sports. We support our Chambers as well and sponsor events that give back to our community. We are proud of both our locations and we want to give back.
