CURRENTS Maritime Flea Market
Find All The Boat Stuff You Need and Sell All The Boat Stuff You Don’t STORY BY KASS FINCHER
S
pring is almost here; that’s when many of us get the itch to do some spring cleaning. And if you’re a boat owner, you might need to do some of that to get your vessel ready to enjoy the season. Get rid of boat supplies you don’t need; make a list of things you need to add. And we have just the venue for you boaters to do just that – the Third Annual Marine Flea Market coming up April 4 at the Yacht Basin. Sponsored by the Southport Yacht Club (SYC), the Marine Flea Market will connect boaters with others who want to buy or sell their stuff. Anyone can participate as a seller; each space is just $25, with the fee going to charity. This year’s charity is the Oak Island Water Rescue team.

And if you don’t need boat supplies, there will be other vendors selling nautical products and crafts that you need to come and check out. A raffle for gift certificates donated by Mr. P’s, Oliver’s and Loco Jo’s will be very popular! The event runs from 8 am to 4 pm – with great food and entertainment to make it a fun day. Chris Webster, commodore for the Southport Yacht Club, describes how the event began. “Several years ago, we came up with the idea,” he says. “We realized we all have a lot of stuff on our boats that we probably don’t need. I looked it up and there’s this flea market in Florida that’s enormous – a football field full of people. So we moved forward. We decided to do it right in front of where many of us have our boats – at the Southport Marina. And a big thanks to the Marina; they allowed us to have it there for the first two years. “That first year we had maybe 19 spaces with vendors. We were able to come up with $350 to donate to local charities. We decided to do it again! Last year we had over 40 vendors and we selected Childswish to receive the proceeds. We came up with $1,500 to donate to them. That’s a good trend!” Norm Brown, leader of the SYC team planning the event this year, plans to continue that trend. “We’ll be in the Yacht Basin this year, which allows us to offer 120 spaces for sellers, each 14’ x 14’,” he explains. “We hope to have 45 retail vendors and the rest for boaters who want to sell their stuff.” SYC team member Cliff Lill reiterated that point. “It’s all about being a flea market for boaters, and also raising as much as we can for charity,” he says. “We chose Oak Island Water

Rescue (OIWR) for the charity this year – we wanted to go with a local, marine related organization.” A good choice. Tony Young, OIWR chief, describes his group’s work. “The Oak Island Fire Department saw a need and started the team as a separate organization 22 years ago,” he says. “The Coast Guard donated two boats – that we still have – and the town donated a boat as well. Today we have three boats and three trucks. We have a 10’ Zodiac inflatable boat that we launch in the surf, just drag it out there. We also have a larger 14’ Zodiac with a bigger outboard in case we have to make a long run in the waterway, ocean or inlets. Occasionally a boat will ground on Jaybird Shoals and we can go out there and pull them off. “When people call 911, the central command will contact us if we need to be involved. We have the same radios that the police and fire department carry; we’re on the fire department channel, they go to all our calls because they’re also paramedics. “In the last two years we’ve had 50 plus call-outs; six of which were what we call ‘saves,’ because if we didn’t show up someone would be seriously injured or worse. We’re on call 24/7; with 20 members we always have someone available to answer the call.” Young goes on to describe their financial needs. “We really need to replace our Zodiacs – they’re old; they’re patched up so we can keep them float-
ing,” he explains. “The surf boat gets beat up a lot. That boat gets turned over sometimes; it always gets pulled up on the beach. For a new trailer and boat, we think we can get one for around $12,000. It needs to be the best quality because of the wear and tear it takes. “The third boat is a 14’ Jon boat, aluminum that we can take into the marsh if necessary to help with kayakers. Long term, I’d like to replace that with a hovercraft, which will cost around $60,000. We’re hoping to apply for a grant to help us acquire that boat.” No doubt the Oak Island Water Rescue team deserves our community’s support. If you’d like to be a part of the Market, reserve a space to sell your stuff by contacting Norm Brown at normbrown1970@gmail.com. You can also simply donate boating supplies to the donation table; contact Norm if you have something to donate. For the whole community, this free event is not to be missed! Be sure to come out to the Marine Flea Market on April 4, rain or shine, and check out the boating supplies and nautical products, buy raffle tickets and enjoy the food and entertainment! It’s a fact; everyone loves a good flea market – it’s always where you make interesting finds. And maybe at this one you’ll bump into some of your neighbors hawking their boat stuff.

Four-Legged Fun Dog Games Have Moved To Southport STORY BY JEFFREY STITES
T
he Sergei Foundation Dog Games are coming to Southport’s Yacht Basin on Saturday, March 21 from 10 am - 3 pm
This year’s event has moved to the springtime rather than the November timeframe last year. ““We wanted to get out of hurricane season,” said Karen Fullerton, founder and CEO of The Sergei Foundation. “Moving to the end of March provides the much-needed outing for pets after winter season and a perfect spring-fever event.” The Sergei Foundation’s Dog Games has been a one-of-a-kind dog festival since 2014, originating in the Triad. It is designed for pets to participate in dog sports such as dock jumping, frisbee and agility; a unique offering from typical pet-related events. This
fundraising event (via entry donation) assists the foundation’s mission “to save companion pets’ lives by providing veterinary financial assistance to families unable to afford critical treatment for their dog or cat.” This year’s festival will feature dock jumping, mini-lure ( a 40-yard dash), Up Dog Challenge and, for the less active pooches, a pie eating contest and a longest kissing contest. Radio personality Suzanne Jalot from 103.7 FM will be on hand to MC the event. Events have an entry fee and some require pre-registration. See the Dog Games website at www.ncdoggames. com for details.

No matter if you are new to the area or just want to know what’s new to the area, he Coastal Consumer Showcase is a must attend event. We know that sometimes it is difficult to find a business that provides a product or service. You can search the Chamber’s Business Directory, but going to an event where you can see the product or talk with the business owner about their services is extremely valuable. The annual Coastal Consumer Showcase will be Thursday, March 5 from 4-7pm at the St. James Community Center, 4136 Southport-Supply Road, St. James. The Showcase is a public event organized by the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce. There are many free giveaways provided by the participating businesses’ including samples, a $100 cash drawing and the popular Pick-a-Prize Auction. What is a Pick-A-Prize Auction? Each vendor provides a prize item. There will be a “bag” in front of each vendor’s prize. You determine which prize(s) you would like to a
chance to win. Then you place your ticket(s) in the bag(s) of that prize(s). The winner of that prize will be selected from the corresponding “bag.” Those who register for the $100 Cash Drawing will receive one ticket for the PickA-Prize Auction. To increase your chances, you may purchase as many additional auction tickets as you would like: 5 tickets for $5 and 20 tickets for $10. At 6:30 pm, the Chamber will draw the winners for the Pick-A-Prize Auction prizes and will notify the winners by email. Winners will pick up their prize at the business donating the item. The Chamber will notify the winner of the Cash Drawing on Friday. Admission is free. Editor’s Note: This is our second issue as publishers of Southport Magazine and our first Maggie Issue. It’s been an adventure so far, but working on this issue has been such a great joy that I wanted to share the experience. Over the course of a couple of weeks, I captured all the photos you’ve seen on the award winner pages. Yes, there was a herding of cats aspect to it that wasn’t easy, but I was trying to meet up with more than 50 hard-working and very busy people, so it was all good. In fact, it was more than good. It was wonderful. While driving around taking these photos I was smiling so much that it made my face hurt. The people in the preceding pages are truly a joy to work with, a pleasure to know and an honor to call friends. I was struck by how thankful the business owners were to the readers who voted and to their employees who helped them earn the “prestigious” Maggie. Many of these owners and managers were insistant that we schedule a time when as many of their crew as possible could be in the photo. I saw teamwork and a sense of pride from everyone. Please remember that you, the members of our community, are the glue that holds all of this together. Every time you choose to buy a birthday or Christmas gift from a local merchant rather than on Amazon, you help your neighbors stay in business. Every penny and every minute you donate to our local charities allows them to keep helping people right here in the ways tha are most needed. Each time you eat out at one of our local restaurants or go for a drink or to see some music at a local club, you are helping people live their dreams. I want to thank, from the bottom of my heart, everyone who has welcomed us as Southport Magazine’s new owners. I want to thank all of our local businesses, owners and employees alike, for making life here amazing. And I’d like to thank you, our readers, for helping keep this community a thriving and vibrant home for us all. Southport Magazine 2016-2017 SOI Chamber Small Business of the Year Winner

Funky Little Shak
ARTSHAK Gallery And Studio Allows Couple To Live Out There Dreams STORY AND PHOTOS BY CARLA EDSTROM
W
hat started in an old roadside fruit stand, the Artshak Art Gallery and Studio, has become a thriving art gallery in the heart of Southport. Owners and artists Thom Seamans and Linda Platt live and work in their home connected to their studio and gallery, but their humble beginning is not only a memory but also a testament to their determination to be artists. “We started in an old fruit stand on 211 across from what is now Rivermist. A bank building now occupies the space under the sprawling nut tree,” said Thom. “Our incredible landlords were Bubba and Rebecca Smith. There was no running water, a toilet or electricity. We survived, however, because Bubba had a mobile home next door with a toilet and we ran very long extension cords to get power for a light bulb,” he said. Both have always been artistic, and decided together that they would be artists and their combined determination made it happen. “We do things a bit differently here. Money is not the object, nor has it ever been nor can it ever be,” said Thom. “Decades ago, we both determined to change our lives for the rest of our lives. Retirement someday was not an option. Why delay doing what we wanted to do until some future date if we could do it now? It is all about Linda’s and my desire to be artists, to integrate all aspects of our life around creating art,” he said. “To make such a change both of us had to be on the same page, and we were. First, get out of Dodge! No more snow, ice, and cold. We searched and found Southport and moved here in 1997. We bought a little house on Leonard and looked for a place to do and sell our art. In 1997 there were few buildings able to accommodate our needs.” Originally from White Plains, NY, Thom found his calling while taking metal sculpture classes at night in New Haven, CT in 1979. “This is when I knew what i was meant to do,” he said. For 12 years, Thom studied stone sculpture, clay, drawing, painting, and casting. He received classical art training at Lyme Academy of Fine Arts, Old Lyme, CT. “I
work primarily with aluminum and copper. I cut it, beat it, bend it, roll it, heat it, weld it and then usually coat it with metallics, acids, and dyes,” he said. “I work with people to create custom designs for their spaces. I do 30-40 commissions a year. We design it together so they can love it forever. The very best part of being an artist is seeing the look in a client’s eyes as he/ she finally views what we have created together,” said Thom. “I met Linda in 1993. I had been making my living as a sculptor for a couple of years when she entered my life forever,” he said. Linda too was a lifelong artist, spending most of her life in Milford CT. “I have always been interested in art, taking classes and creating things,” said Linda. “My favorite medium is mixed media integrating 3D painting techniques with paper, glass, pottery and found objects mixing the techniques and materials to create something different from the norm,” said Linda. “I studied pottery at night at Wesleyan University in CT in the early nineties. After Thom and I met, we went to auctions to purchase furniture which I then painted and sold while still in CT. Upon moving to Southport, we continued acquiring furniture, which I painted and decorated from 1997 through 2005 until we moved into our current building.” Desperately needing more space to work, Thom and Linda searched for a larger spot, and in 1998 they moved to Whelan Vereen’s gas station on Howe St. “We painted the building in multiple colors and put sculptures and painted furniture out front, but still had the occasional driver stop by to change his oil,” Thom laughed. In 2005, the current ARTSHAK Gallery and Studio at 822 N Howe St, Southport was complete. “The new

building attracted a lot of attention and artists began to show up inquiring about showing their work,” said Thom. “We became a gallery! runswick Little Theatre brings Neil Simon’s “Plaza Suite” to the stage this month. The three-act play is set in Suite 719 of New York City’s Plaza Hotel, though each act has a different set of characters. First up are Sam and Karen Nash, in Visitor From Mamaroneck, as they revisit their honeymoon in an attempt to rekindle their marriage. The plan backfires and the two argue about whether he is having an affair with his secretary. In the second act, Visitor from Hollywood, movie producer and known ladies man Jesse Kiplinger reconnects with old flame and suburban housewife Muriel Tate. Act Three, Visitor from Forest Hills, focuses
on married couple Roy and Norma Hubley on their daughter Mimsey’s wedding day. Mimsey locks herself in the bathroom in a fit of nerves, and her parents must convince her to come out while guests are awaiting downstairs. Slapstick humor ensues. Are they successful? No spoilers here - tickets are on sale now. Veteran actress Rasa Love takes on the role as director for this show, leading a

Gettin’ Saucy
Saucy Southerner Opens With A Bang STORY AND PHOTOS BY KASS FINCHER
O
wner Matt Thorne of the Saucy Southerner on Howe Street is excited about his dream becoming a reality. Just opening in January of this year, he’s already getting great feedback from customers about his restaurant.
“I’m excited, blown away by the support,” Thorne says. “I’ve been working toward this idea for awhile now; you always wonder how your plan’s going to work out. But the venue has gone over better than I expected - we have extremely happy customers.” The Saucy Southerner name reflects their approach – a combination of saucy flavors and a bit of Southern attitude. “We have a unique niche,” Thorne says. “When I was developing the menu, I was thinking about what my friends had said about other breakfast places – dishes that were missing or too standard. They told me you’re going to have to do something different; you’re not going to make it in Southport unless you set yourself apart. So we worked on a menu that offered a good combination of southern food and unique spiciness.” Having grown up in restaurants, Thorne had a lot of experience to draw from. “Growing up, my parents had a Bed and Breakfast in Morehead City. I was up there in the summer and in the winter I was in Greensboro where we lived. After they sold the B&B, my parents owned an IHOP in Greensboro. That’s how I learned to cook.” Taking a different path after both restaurants were sold, Thorne began coaching

USA Swimming with the YMCA. He still worked at other restaurants while maintaining a challenging schedule. “I loved coaching, but I would get up to go to swim practice at 5 am, then go to work at restaurants, then coach until 9 pm. As much as I loved it, I realized it wouldn’t pay the bills.” So he moved to the coast in February 2017, working for a company on Bald Head as HR Director. After Hurricane Florence hit, he left that company and began considering other paths. He credits his family, friends at Generations church, and others with helping him figure out his next steps. “I bought a house on Oak Island and decided this is where I wanted to live,” says Thorne. “I worked at Old Bridge Diner and then on to Mr. P’s – both great experiences and people that I
learned a lot from. “All the restaurants I’ve worked at have helped develop what I wanted to do here. We’re doing a different style of breakfast – stone ground yellow grits, crepes – all made from scratch. Our stoneground grits come from the Guilford Mill in Greensboro; the crepe recipes I’ve developed through the family. We make a special blintz mix – cottage cheese, cream cheese and sour cream – to stuff the crepes. It was a childhood favorite that I loved at IHOP. “ Although you can order the standard two eggs, bacon and toast, the Saucy Southerner approach tempts you with a unique offering that most who try find they love. “The Howe Street biscuit is an example,” says Thorne. “It’s a grilled biscuit with sausage, egg and pepper

SAVOR jack cheese topped with pepper jelly – a unique combination of sweet and savory.” Committed to using as many local and North Carolina-based ingredients as possible, Thorne is proud of his quality and selection. “We have Cheerwine and Neese’s sausage and bacon,” he explains. “The nuts are based out of Goldsboro, the pepper jelly out of Greensboro. All of our desserts are made by a local lady. Our coffee beans come from a small company in Wilmington – I call my order in on Wednesday, they roast the beans on Thursday and ship the beans to us on Friday. We can also ask for a little different flavor to the beans and they’ll accommodate us. I believe our coffee is above and beyond – no acid or dry flavor.” Breakfast runs from 8-11 am, with your choice of crepe, wrap, omelette or scrambled eggs. The Bacon Bomb, with bacon, cheddar, tater tots and a green onion topping, is a popular choice. You can also build your own crepe, wrap, omelette or scrambled option with a choice of meat, cheese and topping ingredients. Crepes can come basic with fruit, Nutella or marmalade, or with the traditional or chocolate cheese blintz stuffing along with fruit or other toppings. The grits ‘n biscuits options include the Crazy Savory Grits Bowl, with stone-ground grits cooked using an old family recipe, topped with overhard egg, pepper jack cheese, green onion and crumbled bacon. From 11 am to 3 pm, lunch is served. Besides salads and build-your-own sandwiches, the Saucy offers some intriguing twists on the standard burger, chicken and BLT. The Saucy Goat Burger adds a fried green tomato, pepper jelly and lettuce on a grilled brioche bun. The Kickin’ Chick’n wraps chopped fried chicken with hot sauce, bacon crumbles, pepper jack cheese and a honey sriacha aioli. And Not Yo Mama’s BLT offers four slices of bacon and fried green tomato on a toasted multigrain bread, with options for goat cheese or eggs. Yum! The Saucy seats 20 inside and maybe 30 outside. Thorne wanted to keep the menu simple so they could produce fresh, quality food quickly. Friend and IT consultant Paul Vincent explains. “Some have asked about providing breakfast all day long,” he says. “It’s hard to do – you can’t provide the right quality of food – the freshest, hottest dish. The kitchen is not large, and grill temperatures are different; for example you can’t do burgers next to crepes. Matt did a great job of developing the flavor profiles; if you start mixing things you can mess that up. And he’s committed to the best quality and freshest, homemade dishes we can make.”
Est. 1986
Currently open Monday through Saturday, Thorne expects to reconsider opening on Sunday once the spring season arrives. “Our decision about Sunday will be made with our staff’s input – I want them to be able to spend Sunday with their families,” he explains. “Also we’re not a big place and we can only move the food so fast. We’re doing order at the register because we’re so busy. I can’t imagine what happens when the tourist season starts. The local people have been so great; people really have supported my vision for the restaurant.” Thorne also gives much credit to friends for helping him get started. Some painted and helped renovate the interior. Some from the swim community here pitched in. The owners of the Old Bridge Diner pointed Thorne to a great salad recipe with poppy seed dressing. He was impressed and named it after them – The Jones. Beyond the commitment to great quality food, Thorne has a genuine dedication to customer service. “I watched how my parents did their restaurants,” he says. “They ran the B&B like you were coming to stay with grandma and grandpa. At the IHOP my mom would be at every table talking to customers.” Thorne and his staff are equally committed to doing what they can to preserve our beautiful coast. They don’t use styrofoam – only biodegradable takeout containers and utensils. You won’t find straws here either.
Thorne describes the vibe he wants his customers to feel. “You come in here in the morning and you smell the fresh ground coffee, you hear us cooking eggs on the grill – all those smells are going to help you relax like you’re at home. I get here before 6, we open at 8. It takes an hour to cook the grits – the chipped beef gravy is my mom’s old recipe. Everyone loves it!” It all amounts to a considerably personal touch – the menu, the staff, the presentation. And just that special touch of Saucy-ness will keep us southerners coming back.

ocusing on the outcome distracts us from the things we can actually control, the daily behaviors. If you want to achieve more, you need to set the right kinds of goals. Let me explain. Suppose I ask you what your fitness or health goal is. Most of you would say something related to losing a certain number of pounds, or fitting into a certain pant size, achieving a desired blood sugar number, or completing a running race. All of these are worthy goals, but they are all outcome goals.
Hearts & Sol Wellness practitioners are committed to helping you on your holistic healing journey, offering complete mind, body, and spiritual modalities for optimal health and well-being.Visit our Facebook page for our monthly workshops, classes and events!

Outcome goals are ultimately things that are out of our control. When we focus solely on that goal, we lose sight of the things we do have control over, the things that can get us to our outcome goal, our behaviors. Setting the right kinds of goals, will exponentially increase your odds of succeeding. Below is a 2-step process to help you turn bad goals into good ones. And good goals equal great results! Turn Outcome Goals into Behavior Goals First let’s get more specific about the difference between an Outcome Goal and a Behavior Goal. An Outcome Goal is something you want to happen, such as losing a certain amount of weight. A Behavior Goal is something you would do to move toward the desired outcome, such as eating smaller portions of balanced meals, or exercising daily. There is nothing wrong with wanting an outcome like a lower body weight, but we often can’t control the outcome because so many factors can affect it. Behavior goals, however, allow us to focus on the things we can control…the actions, not the end results. Here is an example of what turning an Outcome Goal into Behavior Goals might look like. Let’s say you want your outcome to be losing 20 pounds. In order to achieve this outcome, you will need to implement certain behaviors like regular exercise, controlling calorie intake, managing stress, and improving sleep. Turning these behaviors into goals might look like the following: Behavior Goal #1 – add exercise into
42 Southport Magazine /March2020 /March2020 / www.SouthportMag.com
your daily routine four days each week Behavior Goal #2 – add a protein source and fruit/vegetable to each meal Behavior Goal #3 – add a 5-minute break each day for breathing exercises Behavior Goal #4 – add a repeatable nightly wind down routine for bed You may implement all the above Behavior Goals at once, or you can gradually add the behaviors in one at a time after you have mastered working each one into your routine. For example, you may spend two weeks on Behavior Goal #1 before adding in Behavior Goal #2. Then maybe you spend three weeks with a combination of the first two goals before adding in the third goal, and so on. Everyone is different; you don’t have to force yourself into a set plan. The important part is you feel successful and confident with each goal and build upon these success to keep moving forward. Turn Stop Goals into Do Goals A Stop Goal is something you don’t want, something that pushes you away from your current pain. For instance, you would say something like “I don’t want to feel out of shape” or “I don’t want my knees to hurt.” A Do Goal is something you want, something that moves you toward a better, more desired outcome. Here you would say something like “I want to feel confident and strong,” or “I want to live without pain.” So why are Do Goals better than Stop Goals? From a psychological perspective Stop Goals are counterproductive, because when you tell someone to stop something it almost guarantees they will want to keep doing it. Even if it is something you are telling yourself. Plus, whenever you are focused on a Stop Goal, it reinforces the feeling of failure when
Southport Magazine 2016-2017 SOI Chamber Small Business of the Year Winner
FITNESS P R I VA T E P E R S O N A L T R A I N I N G S T U D I O
you slip up and do the thing you should be stopping. And when you feel like you failed, it makes it more challenging to stay the course and get back on track. A Do Goal on the other hand will give you something to focus on doing instead of the old habit you are trying to stop. And every time you stick to a Do Goal, you feel better, successful, and inspired to keep moving forward. Implementing Do Goals instead of Stop Goals might look like “eating more cut up fruits and vegetables” instead of “no junk food.” Or instead of “no soda” focus on “drinking a glass of water with each meal.” Or, instead of “no sitting and watching TV,” try “I will take a walk after dinner.”
If you notice, you are suggesting basically the same thing, but you are being more specific about doing the positive. And you should absolutely pay attention to this. Every time you do something that moves you forward; you are making progress…no matter how small of a step you think it is. Continue to focus on the process, the behaviors. Celebrate each of these little wins that make up the process and the desired outcome will ultimately take care of itself.
