Tea Time, “Downton Abbey” Style held on Saturday, February 21 by Brunswick Little Theatre was a smashing success!

CONTENTS // VOL 3 ISSUE 6

Sue MacCallum, President of Brunswick Little Theatre welcomed everyone and introduced BLT’s special guests and the event’s host; writer & actress Jemila Ericson. While the music played, Downton Abbey butlers served English tea to 160 guests who also enjoyed scrumptious sweets, treats and various tea sandwiches. Downton Abbey Dukes, Damsels and Dowagers promenaded through the Southport Community Center dressed in vintage fashions of the early 1920s: in costumes provided by UNCW Theatre Department. Linda Pukenas of the Robert Ruark Inn delighted the gathering with an enlightening tea talk. The silent auction was deafening with the buzz of patrons at the tables who purchased the marvelous items contributed by our many Brunswick County businesses and merchants. Time flew by so fast and before we knew all were bidding farewell until the next Tea Time, “Downton Abbey Style.”

Thank You!

Where would we be without our volunteers?

A big round of applause goes heartily out to all who worked so tirelessly in preparation for this event. We acknowledge the Tea Time Committee and extended staff, the Downton Abbey Butlers, Dukes, Damsels and Dowagers along with the many behind the scenes volunteers. Our thanks to 75 merchants and businesses who generously donated items for the Silent Auction; their support of our fundraising efforts is invaluable to Brunswick Little Theatre. A special thanks to our program designer, Michael Stringer and our Webmaster, Jeffrey Stites who made the technical side of the event run seamlessly. Without all this support Brunswick Little Theatre couldn’t exist. We sincerely appreciate all you do. Please come and enjoy our upcoming season of lively, entertaining and educational events! Thank you for your continual support for Southport Magazine!

SouthportMag.com

hen I first started Southport Magazine in October of 2012, I wrote down a list of things I wanted to accomplish. Last on my list was the creation of the Maggie Awards. For over 2 years, I have been thinking about the Maggie Awards. It was important to me to create a readers poll that had some depth and would be interesting to voters. Over the summer, I had the Southport Magazine staff over to my house for a mexican extravaganza and we sat around and composed what became the 54 questions of the 2015 Maggie Awards. My favorite part of the creative process is brainstorming with the staff. It was such a group effort! We looked at the calendar and set the dates for the voting time frame, the awards show and the after party. It was my hope to have the awards party at the Amuzu Theatre because it is just the coolest place. I met with Bill Furpless and he agreed to allow us to use the theater for the awards show. Then my husband, Alan created the voters survey on Survey Monkey and loaded all the questions. Liz our graphic designer created beautiful ads with an art-deco theme marketing the Maggie Awards and instructing readers to go online and vote. Voting began December 1st and ended on January 16th. I was so scared that no one would vote. But they did! We had over 400 votes! Next came the task of counting all the votes It took us a week to go through and calculate the votes. It was so exciting to see how many different businesses received votes in each category. I contacted the top vote getters in each category. I prefer top vote getters over winners because every business that received a vote is a winner in my book. All but a few top vote getters were able to attend the Awards Show on Saturday, February 7th. I realized that I would need

some assistance with the production of the awards show, so I contacted Jeffrey Stites of the Brunswick Little Theater. Jeffrey and Alan agreed to serve as Masters of Ceremonies. I enlisted the help of the beautiful, Caitlin Lokey to serve as our “Vanna White”. And I asked my gregarious step daughter, Lauran Skipper to work the red carpet as field reporter for Southport Magazine TV, interviewing the quests as they arrived on the red carpet. I reached out to Mr. Ron Ronquillo of Pescado y Amor Photography to act as official photographer for the 2015 Maggie Awards. Silver Coast Winery agreed to host the after party and give part of the proceeds to the Amuzu. It was amazing how it all came together. I feel very proud of what we were able to accomplish as a group. The staff of Southport Magazine, my family and my friends were all part of the process. A special thanks to: Jen Barnett, our editor who served as my resident Psychologist talking me through some tough days and was willing to do whatever it took; Leslie Reschly, our Health Columnist who keeps me exercising and is always willing to lend a hand; Sue and Chuck Cothran and Liz Brinker who created and constructed the beautiful Maggie awards and lastly, my wonderful husband, Alan who I could never do without! I hope as you read the coverage of the 2015 Southport Magazine Maggie Awards you will appreciate all the fine restaurants, businesses, services and people we have in our community. The Maggie Awards are meant to be a positive, celebration of all the hard working people in this area.

2015 Maggie Awards

You voted for them, we threw them a party

S

outhport Magazine is proud to recognize local businesses that our readers think are doing an extraordinary job with the very first Maggie Awards. It was a cool night in February and the place was all a buzz waiting to unveil Maggie winners at the awards show. Then the celebrating continued during the after party at the Silver Coast Winery Tasting Room on Howe Street. But, we wouldn’t have had anything to celebrate if it not for the good folks in our community voting for their favorites. Here’s how the voting took place: Over several weeks, 12/1/14, through 11:59 p.m. 1/16/15 Southport Magazine readers filled out online ballots writing in their favorite responses to over 50 thought provoking questions covering food, shopping and humanitarian efforts. On 1/17/15 we burned the midnight oil tallying over 400 submissions. Soon after, the businesses with the most votes were notified, awards were made, party details were planned and then it was time to celebrate. We awarded over 50 restaurants, shops and businesses at the awards show including the most coveted award: The Golden Maggie, given to the business that received the most votes overall. Read on to see all the businesses and people who received votes from our community for doing an exceptional job!

The 100 plus members of the Sea Notes Choral society will perform 60’s classics at free concerts March 27 - 29.

“That started the wheels rolling,” she said. Sea Notes will present “Songs from the 60’s” at three concerts in March. The free concerts will be Friday, March 27 at 7:30 p.m. and two matinee shows on Saturday and Sunday, March 28 and 29 at 3 p.m. The concerts will be at Hatch Auditorium on the grounds of the Baptist Assembly at Fort Caswell. The show promises to be a popular one, with the choral group covering a variety of favorite 60’s sounds. “We’ve got some great music,” Linton said. “I can tell from their faces that they’re having a good time,” she said of the Sea Notes members. There were so many kinds of music produced in the 60’s, and many of those songs are favorites of later generations as well. Selections for the concert include a

few medleys, such as a dance music combo that features the “Locomotion” and “Twist and Shout.” The men will harmonize on Beatles’ classics such as “Yesterday” and “She Loves You,” while the ladies will take on the 5th Dimension’s “Wedding Bell Blues,” Patsy Cline’s “Crazy,” and Petula Clark’s “Downtown.” The whole group will also sing “Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind,” some Simon and Garfunkel and Beach Boys’ favorites “I Get Around” and “In my Room.” Though the concerts are free, donations for the non-profit group will be accepted. Sea Notes boasts more than 100 members, and the group is working toward purchasing seated risers, which will allow performances at larger venues, such as Odell Williamson Auditorium. The group sang to packed houses at Hatch Auditorium for performances of its winter concert, “Sea-

sons of Love,” in December. Linton said the group hopes to provide seated risers for 130-140 singers. Music from the 1960’s has been a part of our culture ever since, and audiences of all ages can appreciate the concert. “The music brings back a lot of memories,” Linton said. She and pianist Jane Boberg will play selections from “West Side Story,” and the concert will also include percussion and guitars. “Who knows,” Linton said. “There may even be some dancing.” To become a Friend of Sea Notes or a Business Supporter, go to www.sea-notes. com or call (910) 620-6275. ✪

CHEERS What’s The Craic?

Irish treats at Southport’s Sláinte | BY JEN BA RN E T T AND KR I S BEASLEY

F

irst things first: it is pronounced SAH-LAN-CHA or more officially Sláinte or slàinte (slahn-che), which is literally translated as “health” and is commonly used as a drinking toast in Ireland and Scotland.

JAMESON IRISH WHISKEY

With St. Patrick’s Day right around the corner, it seemed fitting to head to Southport’s own Irish Pub, Slainte and get the lowdown on some Irish favorites. Manager, Patrick Gaynor guided us on a tour through four different drinks: Guinness Irish Dry Stout, Jameson Irish Whiskey, Half and Half Cocktail and the Irish Car Bomb.

GUINNESS IRISH DRY STOUT

There is a 5-step process to pouring a glass of Guinness correctly. 1. Always use a clean glass. (Never use the same glass to refill.) 2. Always use a special “tulip shaped” glass. 3. Only fill the glass 3/4 of the way full on the first pour. All the head (foam) comes from the first pour. 4. Let it rest for 119.5 seconds. 5. The second pour comes next, filling the glass. “Many people think of Guinness as a heavy, high calorie beer, but it actually contains fewer calories than a Budweiser”, says Patrick. (Only 125 calories per glass)

Lays it’s claim to being the world’s best-selling Irish whiskey! They even a have Jameson Masters Club, similar to the Masters in golf, where you can earn a green blazer once you have reached 100 points. “We want people to drink Jameson, enjoy Jameson. It’s part of the Irish heritage.,” says Patrick with pride. He also suggests that if you aren’t used to drinking Jameson, start with a Jameson and Ginger. This is a simple mixed drink of Jameson Irish Whiskey and ginger ale. Slainte Irish Pub hosts several events throughout the year, where Jameson Master Club members can show off their green blazers! Slainte also carries other varieties of Irish whiskey and according to Patrick, they are not all the same. The grain bill determines the taste and the cask used. It will be spicy if it was aged in a Sherry cask and more toffee and buttery in a Bourbon cask. Irish whiskey is aged at least 3 years but some are aged much longer, 18 years and on! All of these differences determine the cost, shots range from $6 to $65!

HALF AND HALF

Simple but must be prepared correctly. Fill a glass half full with Harp Lager. Then using a pouring spoon, fill the glass the rest of the way up with Guinness. The spoon prevents the Guinness from mixing and because it is lighter it floats on top of the Harp Lager, creating two layers. This is where the name “Half and Half” comes from. (Warning: Don’t ever make the mistake of calling it a “Black and Tan”, at least not in an Irish pub or in Ireland if you are ever there on vacation!)

IRISH CAR BOMB (SHOT)

Fill a shot glass with 1/2 a shot of Irish whiskey and 1/2 a shot of Irish Cream. Fill a pint glass half full with Guinness. Drop the shot glass into the glass of Guinness. Enjoy it quickly because it will curdle! You can find all these Irish favorites and more at Slainte Irish Pub. Be sure to check out the menu, which has several recipes using Guinness as an ingredient! And be sure to stop in on St. Paddy’s day for corned beef and cabbage and Shepherd’s pie. ✪
