Spring is finally here!

T

his is one of my favorite seasons of the year (disclaimer: besides everything being painted yellow in pollen)! Flowers begin blooming, the sun returns warm and inviting, birds are playfully chirping, and the colors of nature are more gorgeous and perfect than anything we could have imagined. As life is breathed back into the world around us, we take this inspiration and appreciate the special people and events that this new season will bring. When I think of May, I can’t help but think of my Mother, Grandmothers, Great Grandmothers, and my surrogate Mothers and Grandmothers and the special relationships we have with one another. In the unique town of Southport, we have some of the

plane. “We do have a lot of veterans in the area, but we also have a lot of people from that time who appreciate it,”he said. Ginny Largent is Secretary of the local chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association, Chapter 939, based in Oak Island. The EAA was instrumental in bringing the plane to the Jetport last fall. Largent explained that the local chapter hadn’t actually applied through the national organization for the plane to make a stop here last year, but at an event they attended, she and her husband Rich, local EAA chapter President, got talking to the people in charge and let them know they were interested. Largent also said there was incredible support from the community last fall. “It was the best tour stop they’d had in five years,”Largent said. “There was an outpouring of the community to see this aircraft. We were surprised. We had no idea what to expect.” This year, the bomber is making a stop from Florida on its way to participate in a

As part of the nation’s recognition of this 70th anniversary, the WW II B-17 Bomber “Aluminum Overcast” will make a return appearance at the Cape Fear Regional Jetport May 1-3. The plane first came to the Jetport in October; the Jetport tis on the mainland side of the G.V. Barbee Bridge to Oak Island. It was a hugely successful stop for the aircraft. Jetport Director Howie Franklin said it was the most attended stop the plane and its crew made, even beating out Washington D.C. “We’re the largest event they’ve ever experienced, anywhere in the country. The people that worked with the airplane were amazed,” Franklin said. He estimates the plane drew more than 1,000 people a day to the airport. “The locals were extremely excited,” Franklin said. Many flights were pre-sold and he said that in between flights, there were constantly lines to get a look at the

flyover as part of anniversary events in the nation’s capital on May 8. “They wanted to stop halfway,” Largent said. Though Largent said she doesn’t expect the same crowd numbers experienced during the plane’s first visit, she is hopeful there will still be a lot of interest. Tours, both on the ground and in the air, will be available for a fee. Visitors will be able to place themselves in the positions of bombardier, navigator and waist runner. Ground tours are $10 for individuals and $20 for a family;children younger than 8 are free with a paying adult. Veterans and active duty military personnel can tour for free. Advance tickets for flights are $409 for EAA members and $449 for others. Tickets the day of the flights are $435 for EAA members and $475 for nonmembers. Tours and flights will go on as scheduled as weather permits. There will also be free events on the Jetport property. A movie Friday night is planned for some family time and will help carry the theme for the weekend, and the Brunswick Big Band will have a concert Saturday night.

The “Aluminum Overcast” is just one of the three B-17s still touring of the original 12,743 bombers made for the war. Events like this one bring thousands of visitors to the Jetport, which Franklin said helps make more people aware of the Jetport’s role in the community. “There are some people in the county who don’t even know we have an airport,” he said. “It reinforces aviation being interesting to people. We also like to reinforce that we are a resource for the public.”✪

FEATURE My Mother’s Jewelry

A sweet Mother’s Day tribute BY REBECCA JONES

M

y Mother was an artist. Although I didn’t recognize this while growing up. My brother, sister and I grew up in Asheville, North Carolina in the 70’s and 80’s. We certainly didn’t fully appreciate then how “cool” our Mother was, it was just who she was. When we were young our Mother sewed our clothes: our younger school pictures, had us smiling proudly, in our matching patterned cornflower shirts, red-me, blue Mike and yellow Mandy, stiffly tucked under matching blue jean overalls. Macrame was next, ( I did mention it was the 70’s): our front porch was adorned in big thick cable macrame creations, plant holders, wall art, some with shells knotted into the twines. There was the Lion’s head, my Mother’s cou de gras of macrame. A huge shaggy mane framing a cat face, complete with big brown wood bead eyes. She taught us how, but my macrame creations, never turned out like hers; the plant sat lopsided in the weaved basket, the knots were uneven. Macrame was hard: cross-stitch became the new favorite. My Mother did intricate cross-stitch pieces, beautiful nautical scenes, ships, seas, water birds, lighthouses. I started out with small cross-stitch Christmas patterns; a stocking, a candy cane, beginner sample kits that included everything you needed. I remember feeling accomplished

when I could pick a pattern out of one of my Mother’s many books. We would go to the craft store and hunt out the silken colors, not yet marred by needles or little fingers, neatly bound at each end by thin paper clasps. After cross-stitch, came new endeavors; afghans and bulky ski sweaters; we were not a ski family-instead traveling from the mountains to the coast of North Carolina for vacations-but we looked the part. There was the trendy puffy paint sweatshirts from the 80’s. My Mother would sew bells and jangly adornments to the puffy paint designs. My Mother made dream catchers, stained glass, and pressed flower bookmarks. She taught us the joy of stamping; we made families of centipedes and milllipieds, flowers and landscapes just by the ink on our fingertips; we dabbled in water colors and acrylics; origami and ceramics. My Mother was particularly fond of ceramic Santa’s. When I came home from UNCW, Christmas break my freshman

year, my childhood bedroom, had become a Santa sanctuary; rows upon rows of Santas, all different shapes, sizes and period pieces, in various stages of paint, there was a time the completed Santa’s adorned the living room mantle year round, becoming affectionate family lore. We put pieces of masking tape on bottles, brushed with paint; ordinary kitchen bottles and jars became works of art; functional works of art, to hold paint brushes or dried flowers, as my Mother was indeed a pioneer in the recycling movement: throw nothing out, because it could be used for something else.

In the 90’s my Mother’s workshop of popsicle sticks, magazines, brushes, wood, leather, dried flowers, shells, yarn, plaster of Paris, and polymer clay took a back seat to jewelry making. She begin by making simple drop earrings, a big bead hanging from the earring joist. Then her beadwork became more intricate. She would sit for hours, patiently needling tiny beads together to create one of a kind pieces. She took a silversmith class at Asheville-Bumcombe Technical school, and hammered silver settings for blue-green pieces of turquoise and the darker malachite. My Mother had an infinity with nature, she studied gemstones and crystals, interested in the metaphysical properties. She would bead massive necklaces with stone fetishes, a bird, a turtle, a bear; she would use feathers and

FEATURE bells. She would bead broches to look like the night sky and earrings to look like reflecting water. Mountains, oceans, sunrise, sunsets, the rain, the sun, the seasons, were all reflected in her jewelry making. She made a name for herself too, in the artist world of the Blue Ridge Mountains. She did fairs and festivals. My Father was her trusty assistant, setting up the booth, the tables and chairs. They became a recognizable pair at the fair scene and I think my parents both enjoyed the social aspect. They would meet interesting people and see artists friends from the previous years. I know my Mother enjoyed the artisan bartering system that was alive and well. She would trade her pieces for rustic yard art sculptures, beautiful tye-dyed silks, woven bags, and eclectic jewelry pieces; metal and fabric pieces different from her own beadwork but similar in labor of love. My Mother was diagnosed with Symptoms of Alzehimer’s disease in 2007. She passed away from complications of Alzehimer’s in October 2013. It is a debilitating disease. It doesn’t get better. My Mother spent the last two years of her life in Assisted Living. It was hard. I learned to appreci-

cious stones, or gems. There is an inventory number and her signature. These are pieces from her festival days. Sometimes I pull the box out, I feel close to her and admire her handiwork. I can tell the cycles of time, when she went thru different artistic phases. I also recognize, her signature became shaky, I would not have noticed, had not the pieces been side by side, there was strength in her hand once, that started to give away....when was that exactly? My Mother was a quiet person. She enjoyed the solitude of her arts, and was comfortable being audience to the more boisterous members of the family. She was good, she was steady, she was strong. After years of holding on- I’ve gotten in the practice, of giving a piece of my Mother’s jewelry as a birthday gift for the important female friends in my life. I admit, a fear snatched me once, “ if I give my Mother’s jewelry away, I”ll have nothing left....” A panic seized me, but it was replaced with a warm grace and a knowing: I would also receive a gift. I see these women in my life, wearing my Mother’s jewelry, and I get to see a little bit of my Mom. ✪

ate the “good” moments. My sister longingly recalled an occasion where she saw Mother arranging flowers in a vase, “just like she used too.” One visit my sister and I sat with our Mother and we sang songs-her favorite from church, Let there be Peace on Earth, followed by a raring rendition of Simon and Garfunkel’s Cecilia. Other visits were not so good. It’s as if the whole family became sick. This was not how it was suppose to be! And the person in the family that would know what to do....well, she was ...lost. When she let go, her family was around her, and a heavy sense of peace overshadowed the granite sorrow. I did not cry then. It wasn’t until her service. I noticed immediately: the women attending, all had on jewelry my Mother had made. It was not planned. It was just something each woman did that morning preparing for the service and the long day ahead, they each had a piece of my Mother with them. I have a shoebox of her jewelry, earrings and necklaces. They are organized on small squares of card stock, with a description of the piece, naming the semi-pre-

nirs and nautical gifts. We offer some tee shirts that are original designs and we will have more originals later in the season.

Q:

TELL US ABOUT YOUR T-SHIRTS AND HOW YOU CUSTOMIZE THEM TO THE DIFFERENT AREAS - SOUTHPORT, OAK ISLAND?

We are really excited about the new tee shirt we have done with the folks at Where Life Takes You. We made a list of about 70 things that say Southport to us and they created a great design with the phrases and symbols. We are working on similar shirts for Oak Island, Bald Head and St. James.

Q:

HAVE YOU AND TAYLOR OWNED OTHER RETAIL BUSINESSES IN THE PAST?

Taylor and I had a book and stationary store in the past and also owned and operated a B&B with a Restaurant. We sold both businesses when we made a move due to Taylor’s career.

Q:

ARE YOU LOOKING TO ADD OTHER MERCHANDISE AS YOUR STORE GROWS?

Who knows? We have only been in business for a little less than a year, so for now I’d say we stay the course!

“A

m ust-go to shop!,” “Sweet store with awesome things!!” are just some of the things people say about the little gift shop on Davis Street in Southport. It’s everyone’s favorite eclectic shopping experience from t-shirts and nautical scarves to home decor and jewelry. The perfect shop for gifts and souveniers, there’s something for everyone, whether you have a lot to spend or not.

Q:

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE NAME SOUTHPORT TRADING COMPANY?

We chose the name together with partners that were with us when we first opened the shop. We wanted something with a nautical/historic feel because that’s the type of atmosphere we envisioned for the shop. The building we’re in is an old Southport home that has been used as an office for many years now. We felt the name would fit the location and also be a

good fit for the neighbors - the Maritime Museum and Visitor’s center.

Q:

WHAT KIND OF STORE IS SOUTHPORT TRADING COMPANY?

We want the shop to be a place visitors can find a Southport “memory” and locals can come for fun Southport gear and gifts and even find great nautical things to decorate with.

Q:

WHAT MAKES SOUTHPORT TRADING COMPANY STAND OUT AMONG OTHER SOUTHPORT STORES?

We love Southport and the Southport lifestyle and we want our merchandise to illustrate that. We want Southport Trading Co. to be a fun mix of Southport souve-

Just before dawn, The Saxter’s home glows with coastal flair

Once Upon a Tide

ll my life I have lived by the Atlantic Ocean. Many times I have crept past the undulating dunes to set myself in the damp, taupe sand, knees pulled to my chest and tresses whipping with the wind.

I have always looked to the ocean--for relief on its calm, blue-sky days, and for inspiration and strength on the days when the green and gray waves crest against each other in frothy turmoil. The sound of gulls and other shore birds cackling in badinage melds with the gushing crash of each wave upon the sand, and I am at peace. My sense of home, however, has always been rooted in the salt marsh. The sultry smell of the soggy pluff

mud--offensive to out-of-towners--is the scent of life to locals. Estuarine creatures thrive along the tidal flats, within the serene waters and between the reeds and cord grass. We share our world with fiddler crabs and minnows, and the tranquility of the salt marsh breathes into us the assurance that we are alive--and we are home. Owning the best of both worlds is why Chris and Janet Saxer were drawn to Oak Island. “Chris and I moved to

the Raleigh area in 2011 and soon fell in love with the coast of North Carolina,” Janet begins. “Oak Island offers a unique diversity in coastal landscape and wildlife and is known for its un-crowded beaches, close proximity to Southport, and opportunities to fish, sail, windsurf, bird watch and kayak. Bicycling and kayaking are regular activities for us.” Janet says that in their search for the perfect vacation

HOMESTYLE home, the Saxers discovered the unique Oak Island property at 197 16th Place East. It is there they decided to build a custom vacation home and guest cottage. “Who could resist?” she muses. “We can walk two blocks to the beach for a day in the sun, relax on our private deck overlooking the wetlands, or enjoy a peaceful kayak paddle from our dock in the tidal canal of the Montgomery Slough. One of the best things about being on the marsh is the abundant bird population. Pelicans and cormorants dive for fish in the winter months and there is an osprey that perches in a snag on the property. We never tire of the view and are constantly entertained by the rituals of the herons, egrets, ibis, hawks, and other resident wildlife including box turtles, gray foxes and white tail deer.”

The overall sensation we feel upon entering our home is, ‘ahhhh.’ Thus the Saxers began the journey of building a house from scratch. “Our vision was to build a custom Craftsman style home and carriage house with a coastal flair,” Janet describes. “The houses are designed and positioned on this distinctive five-acre park-like setting to take in the unrivaled views of the coastal wetlands, outstanding wildlife and extraordinary sunsets from just about anywhere inside the home and on the property. We built the one-bedroom carriage house and aimed to limit the amount of bedrooms in the main house to three, to create a generous gathering area to entertain friends and family. Our vision came true at the completion of Once Upon A Tide [the main house] and Wish Upon A Starfish [the guest cottage]. With a private pier to a deck and kayak dock, we don’t think there is another property such as this anywhere on Oak Island!” “This is a lifestyle property,” REMAX realtor Robert Carroll, a leader in luxury home sales in the area, shares. “Those fixtures and things don’t matter that much, although they’ve put a lot of quality into the home, such as glass subway tile, granite countertops, and all wood box cabinetry.” Janet, Robert says, brings a fresh approach to Oak Island style from Raleigh. “They’ve done a lot of things in this house that you wouldn’t normally see,” Carroll continues. “The main house has a reverse floor plan; downstairs we have three bedrooms and the bedrooms all have en suites. The guest cottage has a master bedroom, full bath, and full kitchen and living area.” The Saxers rent out the guest cottage to discerning couples on www.VRBO.com, bringing in over $25,000. “The main house has never been rented, and they live exactly how you see it. The house is well taken care of and very clean,” he assures. “We designed both houses with open-concept living areas, lending a light, airy, comfortable, and casual coastal atmosphere,” Janet urges. “Inspired by our natural surroundings, I chose textures and a color palate in organic hues, then coordinated with accessories echoing the calmwww.SouthportMag.com / May 2015 / Southport Magazine 15

The overall sensation we feel upon entering our home is, ‘ahhhh.’” The outdoor-inspired décor provides a seamless vantage of the Montgomery Slough even from indoors. The colors range from taupe to sea-foam green to slate blue, muted so that the marsh commands attention from every point. The dark green maritime forest snuggles the home, peeking out in window corners amongst the cord grass and blue sky. Earthy textures such as sea grass woven chairs and a capiz shell chandelier mimic the wild coast just outside. Janet adds that her favorite spot in the home is the family gathering area, encompassing the entire upper level of the main house. The kitchen opens out to the living room on the left and the dining room on the right, and uninterrupted views of the salt marsh are the main event. “There are remarkable views in every direction with a full panorama of the outdoors; whether we’re in the kitchen preparing a meal, gathering with friends at the dining table, or just cozying up with a good book,” Janet recommends. “From the living area we are presented with the sparkle of the morning sun reflected off the ocean as well as the vibrant bands of color from evening sun setting over the wetlands.” While the Saxers have cherished their Oak Island getaway, the couple is building another custom property in St. James. At 3,101 square feet, 197 16th Place East is listed with Robert Carroll for $897,000. The sale includes many of the home’s furnishings, such as the Sharp 60” HD Flat Screen Smart TV, custom slip-covered couches, and the GE Stainless French Door Refrigerator. CHEERS Motherhood and Wine

Suggested wines for Mother’s Day BY RHONDA TILL OF UNCORKED BY THE SEA

I

poured myself a glass of wine and sat down to go through the day’s mail. I noticed an ad that mentioned Mother’s Day. I started to reflect on how incredibly wonderful it is to be a mother. I also started to think about what a challenge it is. Then I raised my glass and smiled.

my appreciation of wine, a “relationship”. That simple, delicious, beautiful glass of wine was going to make me a better parent, a better spouse! Okay, well, maybe that’s stretching it a tad. It is now many years later. Those sweet babes are now grown. I’m a Nana to three beautiful little girls. Throughout the years the challenges became fewer as we all aged and matured (yes, me too!). I haven’t given up the wine. It’s become sort of revered. It’s never stopped being something that can bring a sense of calm at the end of the day. To all you Moms out there—Cheers! Happy Mother’s Day!

Mother’s Day Wines BY PAUL WASSERMAN OF UNCORKED BY THE SEA Suggesting wines for Mother’s Day, despite all of the possibilities at Uncorked by the Sea, was quite easy. I simply selected a group of wines I would offer my Mom were she still with me. SAINT-HILARE BRUT 2012

First I would offer a toast of SaintHilare Brut 2012. This sparkling wine is bright and fresh with a racy crispness. It was first made 450 years ago by Benedictine Monks, more than 100 years before the first Champagne was created.

CAVES D’ESCLANS

This is why: Being a Mom is something I always wanted to be for as long as I can remember. If there was a baby around, I was holding him or her and simply in heaven just to have the little bundle in my arms. Most times the little bundle was sleeping. Fast forward several years. I married and my mommy dream came true. A girl and two boys in five years. They weren’t always sleeping and calm and cute and loving. Sometimes they were screaming and mad and dirty and weren’t very loving OR lovable. What does one do to deal with ups and downs of motherhood? I was voicing my mommy frustration at a doctor’s appointment and my doctor mentioned winding down at the end of the day with a glass of wine. Hmmm, okay. That’s doable! So I get myself a bottle of wine. I get my three littles all tucked safely into bed that night and I pour myself a glass of

wine. Oh my! This feels really adult! I began to breathe more evenly and simply relax. I don’t remember if the wine was red or white. I don’t remember if it was a Chardonnay or a Cabernet but I do remember that I was on to something and this doctor was a genius! And no worries… it was only a single glass. I was aware that I needed to keep my wits about me for waking babes in the night. I’d drank wine before but never really thought much of it. I was more of a beer drinker and for the past several years, not much of a drinker at all. 3 babies in 5 years meant I was either pregnant or nursing a baby and alcohol was out. But that glass of wine, it allowed me a window of time to let go of whatever frustrations I had encountered during the day and to reflect on everything I had to be grateful for. It was a way for my husband and me to reconnect at the end of a long day. Thus begins

The second suggestion is Caves D’Esclans “Whispering Angel” Rose 2014. A traditional Provencal blend of Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault. The name alone makes this a great Mothers’ Day wine. Minimal skin contact creates pretty pink wine with notes of fresh strawberry and peach. Whispering Angel is a fresh and supple wine, classy and rich with hints of Thyme and strawberry.

CHATEAU D’EPIRE SAVENNIERES 2013

The next wine of the Mother’s Day group is Chateau D’Epire Savennieres 2013. This wine is 100% Chenin Blanc and shows concentrated aromas of fruit and mineral as well as a floral hint on the nose. The palate is crisp and clean, carrying some of the same notes as the nose. Crisp, bright and refreshing, this dry Chenin Blanc can be enjoyed with light dishes, shellfish and other seafood.

ADELSHEIM PINOT NOIR 2012

For red wine, the first selection is Adelsheim Pinot Noir 2012. A versatile wine suited to a variety of dishes. As a family winery their first vintage was in

1979. Annually Adelsheim produces benchmark Willamette Pinot Noir. The 2012 shows luscious fruit, red and black. It is an elegant Pinot Noir with fine balance and a long finish.

MAS DES DAMES ”LA DAME” 2012

I included Mas Des Dames ”la dame” 2012 because the name translates as “Farm of Ladies”. It is owned and farmed by a mother and her three daughters. This is from Languedoc, France and is a blend of Grenache Syrah and Carignan. It shows bright fresh fruit of Grenache with hints of spice and pepper from the Syrah and a mineral touch from the Carignan.

JUSTIN CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2012

Finally, Justin Cabernet Sauvignon 2012. Justin was first planted in 1981 in Paso Robles, a time when few people even knew where Paso was. The goal from the beginning was to produce elegant Bordeaux style wines. This 2012, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, demonstrates success. The aromas are a complex mix of black currant, cherries and vanilla with hints of cedar and licorice. The palate has medium weight and shows the dark fruits up front. These are followed by cedar and black tea. A smooth long finish completes this Mother’s Day selection. It is appropriate for a bold meal or perhaps a chocolate dessert offering.

Mother’s Day

SOUT H ER N BY CAITLIN LOKEY FASHION EDITOR

Style

Growing up, I was always drawn to my mother’s closet, marveling at the rows of pretty things and lovely high heels. My brothers and I would often play dress up in her closet. Often the three of us could be found lying around her room, watching her as she got ready for a night out. With this incontestable mother-child bond on my mind and my love of style, I thought it fitting that our Fashion issue reflect a Mother’s Day theme. Our backdrop was the beautiful, historical Robert Ruark Inn. Local shops sent mother and child models, styled by each boutique showcasing their unique spring fashions! We were blessed with a perfect day, fantastic models, a talented photographer and the magnificent Inn. Spring flowers and foliage with gorgeous shades of pinks, purples, and greens set the perfect canvas for the photo shoot! A big THANK YOU to Rick and Linda Pukenas, owners of the Robert Ruark Inn for allowing us to use the Inn and welcoming us so warmly. And of course genuine thanks to all the shops and models for their participation! We hope you enjoy these photographs as much as we enjoyed creating them!

Give Mom the Day Off

Favorite recipes to treat your mom on her special day BY C.R. COTRAN

W

hether you’re pampering mom on Mother’s Day with a spa treatment or spending the day at with her the beach, we’ve got brunch covered. You could pamper your mom with lavish Mother’s Day gifts (we’re not saying this is not a good idea) but nothing makes more of a lasting impression, than something you make with your two hands. You don’t have to be a master chef to

create a Mother’s Day Brunch that you’re mom will remember always. We collected some of our favorite recipes the whole family can help cook, to serve your mom on her special day. Some of these can be prepared in advance, some in just a matter of miutes.

British-style Orange Chocolate Scones with Orange Butter

The bread flour makes these very light and fluffy.

a wooden spoon making sure all ingredients are incorporated.

INGREDIENTS 2½ cups bread flour, plus a little extra for rolling out 3oz butter, softened ¼ cup powdered sugar 1 tablespoon grated orange peel ¾ cup mini chocolate chips 2 large eggs 5 tsp baking powder 1 cup of milk 1 egg, beaten, mixed with 1 tsp of granulated sugar (for glazing)

Add half of the milk and keep mixing the mixture gently to combine. Add the remaining milk a little at a time to form a soft, wet dough. You many not need all of the milk.

Preheat the oven to 425F. Line baking sheet with parchment paper.

Transfer dough to baking pan, brush with beaten egg mixure* being careful only to brush the tops of the scones.

Put 2¼ cups of the flour into a large bowl and add the butter. Rub the flour and butter together with your fingers to create a breadcrumb-like mixture. Add the powdered sugar, eggs, baking powder, orange rind and chocolate chips. Mix with

Sprinkle some of the remaining flour onto a clean work surface. Turn the dough out onto the work surface, sprinkle a little flour on top. Roll out the dough into a square about a ½ inch thick. Fold dough in half lengthwise, then in half again. Then re-roll out the dough again to 1” thick. Using a large cookie cutter cut out shapes, or using a knife, cut in squares.

Bake for 15 minutes in the center of the oven or until golden brown. Serve with Orange Butter: Mix together ½ cup soft butter with 2-3 tablespoons of Orange Marmalade.

Do you have a special Mother’s Day recipe to share with our readers? email them to editor@southportmag.com and we will feature them online at www.southportmag.com

Peach Melba Mimosa

Fruit Kabobs

To make a ‘mock-tail’ for kids, substitute lemon soda for champagne.

INGREDIENTS 1.50 cup thawed frozen raspberries 0.25 up sugar 1 up thawed frozen peaches 1 tsp. fresh lemon juice 2 bottle chilled champagne, cava, or other sparkling white wine ½ pt. fresh raspberries

In a blender, puree frozen raspberries and 2 tablespoons sugar. Set a fine sieve over a small pitcher and strain puree; set aside. Rinse blender, then puree peaches with remaining sugar, lemon juice, and 3 tablespoons cold water. Spoon 2 teaspoons raspberry puree and 2 teaspoons peach puree into each glass. Top off each cocktail with champagne and garnish with fresh raspberries. Serve warm or at room temperature.

INGREDIENTS Assorted fruit such as kiwi, bananas, pineapple and grapes. 1 cup of plain greek yogurt 1 heaping tablespoon of honey This one’s easy. Cut up your mom’s favorite fruit, assemble on skewers. Mix together greek yogurt and honey to serve with the skewers..

One Girl at a Time

Girls on the Run helps pre-teen kids develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles BY LESLIE RESCHLY, BSN, RN

S

top by Southport Elementary School on Monday or Wednesday after-school and you will meet a wonderful, energetic group of pre-teen girls actively working to build healthy habits as they participate in Girls on the Run (GOTR). This nonprofit after-school program was started in Charlotte, NC in 1996 but has been established and carried on at Southport Elementary under the guidance of Spring Richardson and Casey Cunningham as well as many valued volunteers who assist. Following instructional classes, these leaders implement the program focusing on self-respect and healthy lifestyles while encouraging running. The program culminates in a group 5K run with other GOTR groups. I was invited to come see the program and so I went ready to be an active participant in my running gear. I was Photo courtesy of Casey Cunningham warmly received by smiling faces! Following the school day, the taught strategies to address their issues current 16 girls gather with their volun- with others. After sharing their successes, teer leaders in the gym for a brief life this week’s lesson on gossip and rumors lesson. The day I attended, Mrs. Richard- began with the old- fashioned game of son reviewed the past week’s lesson on “Telephone” where a group of words was conflict resolution where the girls were communicated around the circle in whis-

pers. Quickly, the lesson became very applicable as positive words became altered to a negative comment through incorrect transmission bringing the lesson to point immediately. After the lesson, the group did an organized warm up then hit the parking lot. Everyone was happy to be outside as inclement weather forces them to run the halls of the school in lap fashion. Safety of the girls is paramount in the leader’s minds. The girls are allowed to pick a partner then each volunteer is paired with 2-3 girls for safety on the road. The girls have been taught road safety while running but utilized the streets of Indigo Plantation where traffic is minimal and there is a marked bike lane. This week the group ran 2 miles. Heard on the street were many positive words of encouragement, high fives to each other as they passed each other and yells of encouragement to finish strong. When asked what they liked the best about the program I heard the following. “I like having someone to run with”, “Running is the best part.”, “I am getting faster and I can go further”! This group of girls then gathered back at the school in a large circle so each could offer a positive comment of encouragement to someone in the group. Needless to say, I was very moved emotionally by the character exhibited by this fantastic group of pre-teen girls. What an excellent program! This current session of GOTR will end April 25 with the 5K run at Ocean Isle.

Each girl who signs up must have an adult partner who will run with them during the race and throughout the week outside of the program. The cost for each girl is $75. Leaders are volunteer positions. Mrs. Cunningham reported they try to raise funds to offer scholarships to those who need it. In addition, they are always in need of funds to help buy appropriate running shoes, socks or shorts for girls in need. If you can help with funds, please direct your tax-deductive contribution to the Southport Elementary School PTA for GOTR. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Casey Cunningham or Spring Richardson through the school at 910-4576036. You do not have to run...extra eyes are always needed and walkers can bring up the rear. More volunteers would allow more girls to participate!! Finally, if you are a male who is willing to facilitate a group, the STRIDE program for boys is available but is not currently implemented due to lack of volunteer leaders. Thank you SES GOTR for sharing your workout with me! Keep up the great fun!

SCENE

Song One

Flannel, Folk Music and Forgiveness BY EMILY KLINEFELTER & JENNIFER BARNETT

W

hen Jen and I first decided to watch SONG ONE we were intrigued because the Redbox review had very little to say - so little in fact I believe it was along the lines of “this movie is a movie” there was literally nothing. Luckily, Redbox has taken the time to review the movie since then, phew!

To set the scene for this movie we did a little digging in advance into what Anne Hathaway, “Oscar winning - speaks with her big eyes” heroine of the movie, known as Franny liked to eat and drink. So with great big smiles we indulged in Sushi, Chocolates, and WineThanks Anne, we love you. With feet propped up and wine in hand we hit play and began to watch. The romantic drama begins with Franny’s (Anne Hathaway) brother Henry (Ben Rosenfield) playing some great modern- folk music on his guitar in the subways of Brooklyn. Sadly Henry is met with a shocking accident that puts him in a coma for a large part of the movie. Too bad, Henry is a likeable character, not nearly as dysfunctional as the rest of his family. Franny has been traveling abroad as a writer/photographer and although she seems to enjoy her career we can’t help but feel that she is still searching for peace.

She is pulled back to her old life in Brooklyn by a phone call about her brother. Right away you can see the chaos of her family dynamic. Her mother (Mary Steenburgen) a hyper emotional, obsessive writer who was thrown into single motherhood by the unfortunate death of her husband is all that Franny has to lean on, therefor their relationship is obviously not a strong one. We couldn’t help but pity Franny and feel her loneliness. All of the characters are artistic, introverted and lacking in basic communication skills. So it is no surprise that Franny and her brother have not spoken for a long time due to an argument they had. This fact opens up a well of regret that only

talented musician but lacking on the looks and self-confidence, we will be polite and call him a private man- oh you flannel shirt artists how we love you…James Forester is so touched by Franny’s story of her brother that he comes to the hospital one day to visit Henry and of course Franny is there. This bodes well since Franny has been using items from his life to attempt to jar him from his deep sleep. This is the first of many heartfelt lovely moments, filled with awkward silences that gave us the shivers! The awkwardness in this movie reached epic proportions similar to The Notebook when Noah and Allie are undressing in the abandon house. James is an up and coming star so we were a little taken aback by the lack of self-confidence and personality! Geez, come on man! You may be asking….. Do they fall in love? Does Henry live to play again? Does the awkwardness ever subside? You will have to see for yourselves! All in all we found the movie to have great music- we loved the sound track- if you like Mumford and Sons, the Avett Brothers, or music in general you will enjoy it for sure. We were impressed for we all know Anne Hathaway can sing (Les Miserables) but we feel she tapped into her inner Bjork- it was kind of awesome. The fashion was very ordinary nothing too great to note- a lot of flannel but hey we love flannel. Anne rocks an adorable pixie- we are so jealous. The acting wasn’t bad but it wasn’t amazing (How hard is it to act awkward and silent anyway?). The film quality felt like Perks of Being a Wallflower-a very Sundance Film Festival feelalmost like they applied a filter over the lens that makes it feel soft and slow. The movie itself was not one we would jump to recommend to someone, unless you were looking for a rainy day, calm, well intentioned flick, that you don’t really need to pay attention to. We will attempt to advise you on foods and other needed props so that you can put together your own viewing party for this and future movies. This particular movie has very few things you need to set the scene. We would go with flannel shirts, M&Ms, Prosecco and pancakes. Don’t ask – just roll with it and ENJOY!

She manages to find his journal and proceeds to let it guide her into his life. As a consequence of this she is introduced to one of Henry’s idols, James Forester.
