ur glass is half full.
Sure things are different, more difficult. Many of the advertisers we depend on are struggling. No one knows what next week will bring let alone next month or next season. That is particularly difficult for small businesses. Planning is essential to our survival. But we, all of us, plan to survive. The community of business owners is creative, resilient and most of all optimistic. Talking with them has kept me hoeful and focused on moving forward. I will never - never - be able to thank them enough. We left most of our discussions with business owners as Q&A’a because they articulated their thoughts and experiences so well, we thought it was better to just let them tell their own stories.” . We have said it before and we won’t stop saying it. This community is very lucky to have these business people among us.

CURRENTS The Show Must Go On
Musicians Are Finding New Ways To Share STORY BY JEFFREY STITES, PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED
T
he show must go on. We’ve all heard that, but what if the audience isn’t allowed to gather? What if the venues are closed? How do musicians keep reaching their audience? They improvise, of course, and use whatever online options they can to keep their fans listening and entertained.
“This is a bit surreal to say the least; Netflix series that we can’t shut off!” aid Ronnie Weinstein. “Twenty five gigs will have been lost for me and my bandmates from the various projects hat I participate in, if this just contines through the month of May. If the ummer season is lost...over a hundred gigs for sure.” But he and other local musicians
are not alone. “Presently, there is not one working musician in this country regardless of their caliber of play, or popularity. Shock is indeed the emotion. Not ‘Comfortably Numb’ as in the Pink Floyd tune, just numb!” he said. While local musicians may not be playing in public these days, they haven’t stopped playing. Randy Sadewater explained, “I spend four hours a
day studying, practicing rehearsing and reviewing. Now with the extra time I would normally spend doing errands, or playing shows, I play guitar even more. For instance, I have been working on Satin Doll, a jazz piece that is extremely difficult to tackle and I will be adding it to our set list now.” Weinstein agreed, “Everyone is rehearsing — practicing on their own. I’ve broken out my old Hanon scale exercise books for piano.” He wonders what going back to playing together will be like. “The scariest part of this whole thing is not having an end in sight. The next fearful component is even after playing with these incredible musicians for hundreds of gigs and over five years, will we have cobwebs to shake off and squeaks that need greasing, or will we just ‘kill it’ like a race horse out of the gate! The passion to perform is definitely chomping at the bit, so that will not be an issue by any means.”

Sadewater said the musicians aren’t the only ones anxious for a return to live music. “We are messaging each other and encouraging each other. I think when this is over, there will not only be eager musicians, ready to play, but eager listeners, as well,” he said. In the meantime, both musicians have taken to the internet to share their music.
“I started doing ‘live rehearsals’ because my fans said they missed my shows, so I thought I’d do a couple to see how well they went over,” said Sadewater. “I do them daily now by request. It’s like a virtual coffee house. When this is all over, we will get together for real, but until then, this is best we can do.” Weinstein says the response to streaming from home has been good. “Likes and loves seem to be the ratings, along with the comments, and they have been good. Everyone has their peeps tapping them on the back. I am always very grateful for that. The views for video clips also are a good indicator. People are hungry for stimulation; I know I am. Look to see the Rev/Doc duo performing a live stream in the next couple of weeks; as soon as we know it is safe,” he said. Not that taking the show to Facebook is without its challenges. “There is the occasional bark from Lucy as she protects the neighborhood or the doorbell ring from UPS. Of course, you need to have a good internet connection with upload speeds being most important,” Weinstein said. “The environmental issues are handled like a heckler in the crowd or a noisy audience. Live means live! Playing to an empty room is a bit tougher to overcome, as the audience engagement for any musician is a major inspiration for performance.”
Southport Magazine 2016-2017 SOI Chamber Small Business of the Year Winner
Sadewater says it’s been as simple as pointing a phone at his rehearsals. “Many years before Facebook and social media I had a website for guitar lessons so I have always had a home studio. Now with Facebook, I use my phone, and I click the ‘Go Live’ button,” he said. “I have songs organized into set lists, around an hour of songs in each set. I rehearse one set every day in order to keep all the songs fresh in my memory because I do not use an iPad or sheet music with lyrics. After five days I’m back on set 1. All I’m doing is turning the phone on during rehearsal, so you get the set list I’m working on that day. Mistakes and all.”
great way to hear what needs tweaking for future performances,” he said. There is a loyal viewing base for the videos that are posted to Facebook.”
Sharing music on Facebook isn’t new to Weinstein either. “I have always recorded live performances of gigs; mostly for my bandmates and myself as a learning tool. It has proven to be a

“The “Live Streaming” curve was a bit new to me,” Weinstein added, “but you are always as smart as the people in your inner circle - lol. I am indeed fortunate to have a large inner circle!” “For me, it’s all about the music. I love playing songs. If my friends enjoy the music too, then so much the better,” Sadewater said. “I can hardly wait to play with my bandmates again.”

Keeping The Beer Flowing At The Tap & Cellar STORY AND PHOTO BY JEFFREY STITES We had a chane to connect with Dewayne and Brittany Hedrick at the Southport Tap and Cellar to talk about how they are making the best it. We spoke to them for a Cheers column when they first opened a year ago, and found ourselves inspired by their continued can-do spirit.
How have you adapted your business to the new rules? How have you been able to utilize social media or other technology to keep your customers engaged?
Since we’ve lost the bar business we’ve really pushed the retail side of our shop by adding delivery and online sales. Social media has also been an extremely useful tool in letting people know about our new products and the new ways in which we are doing business. I highly recommend any local business use all social media outlets as much as possible.
How have you come up with strategies? Brainstorming? Advice from others in a similar business?
What has the support of the community been like? Have you been in touch with other business owners? The support of our local community has been overwhelming. We definitely could not have kept the doors open if it wasn’t for our locals. We owe a huge thanks to everyone that has supported us through this trying time. We have communicated with other local businesses to share what we’ve learned as well as learn from them.
Feel free to add anything else you’d like to share or that you think would be important to people to understand. The only thing we would like to add is that as a community we will get through this as long as we work together and support our small businesses.
Visit the Southport Tap & Cellar at 827 N. Howe (the intersection of Howe and 9th) Hours may change (as everyhting does nowadays) but they are usually open 2-7 pm each day Find out about specials and the fun online trivia and beer tasting on their FaceBook page at: https://www.facebook.com/southporttapandcellar
Mostly it’s been a discussion my wife and I as well as input from our employee Rose Hunt. We’ve also looked at other bottle shops in bigger cities and seen how they have adapted.
What did you learn while starting your business that has helped you to weather this? The biggest thing we’ve learned is to adapt and overcome any situation that may arise. We’ve learned early on that even though you may think things are going to be one way they can easily change at the drop of the hat.
What have you learned from this experience that will help you going forward? We’ve learned that there are lots of things that are beyond your control and learn to change your business accordingly.
What’s been the hardest thing about this new way of doing business and how have you overcome it? Besides the overall loss of revenue, it’s been very difficult not being able to directly interact with our customers. We’ve tried to overcome this by using social media for such things like continuing our Thursday Trivia Nights online using Zoom and even having virtual beer tastings through Facebook live.

A New Restauranteur Keeps Moving Forward
Saucy Southerner Not Going To Give Up STORY AND PHOTO BY JEFFREY STITES
T
wo months after opening The Saucy Southerner, Matt Thorne had to shift gears to turn his new restaurant into a take-out only operation. “The biggest changes learning to do more with less staff,” Thorne said. “I never know what each day will bring. There’s no consistency, no rhyme or reason. That’s what makes it hard.” That uncertainty, combined with a big drop off in daily sales and challenges getting and storing the food and supplies he needs to operate, has made the last few weeks a huge challenge. But he isn’t giving up. In fact, he says, the experience has made him a better businessman and a better person. “I want to be successful. There is always opportunity,” he said. “And you can help others. I can help someone who wouldn’t have had a meal otherwise.” Thorne credits family with keeping him upbeat and energized. “just thinking about them keeps me up,” he said. He’s says he’s also been touched by the support of the community. “I’ve learned how much the community really cares about us,” he said. “I would never have guessed it would be like that as new as we are.”
The slower pace of business has also allowed him to leave the kitchen and go outside and interact with customers, from a safe distance of course. And that interaction has given him hope. He said customers are simply telling him, “We aren’t going to let you fail.”
Thorne credits one of the foundations of his new business, a focus on being unique, with helping him adapt to changing conditions. “I’ve challenged my staff to think about how we can do things differently,” he said. Whatever the future holds, Thorne has concerns. It costs more per customer to do take out and the longer he is not able to serve people on his property, the harder it will be. “I just hope people don’t forget what it was to go out to eat together, to have a drink with friends in a bar,’ he said. “We’re doing everything we can to stay open, though” he said. “Failure isn’t an option.”
Visit the Saucy Southerner at 501 N. Howe Street for breakfast and lunch. We love the entire menu but especially recommend the Fried Green Tomato BLT. It’s absolutely heavenly. Open Monday-Saturday 10 am- 2 pm Check their FaceBook page for specials and all sorts of fun stuff here: h t t p s : / / w w w. f a c e b o o k . com/The-Saucy-Southerner-103540504446802
Another lesson for Thorne has been the extent to which businesses rely on each other. “I never saw before how much we supported local businesses,” he said. “And this has really hurt local businesses.” That speaks to the importance of continuing to support locally-owned restaurants rather than franchises and chains. “We source our food locally, use a local produce vendor, for example,” he says. When you support his restaurant, he says, you are also supporting an entire network of local jobs. Thorne has benefited from his own network of restaurant friends. With deliveries coming fewer times a week, he is able to store some supplies at Old Bridge Diner on Oak Island. He said he talks to the owner of Old Bridge, Mike Jones, and Chris Smith at Mr. P’s daily about how to deal with the new reality and things they can do to draw people out. “Everyone is doing it a little differently,” he said.

Shifting Gears
La Polena B&B Figures Out How To Adapt STORY BY JEFFRY STITES, PHOTO CONTRIBUTED
H
ow do you operate a Bed and Breakfast when everyone is being told to stay at home? Suzanne Foster, Innkeeper of La Polena is preparing for a differnt sort of travel season. What have you done to keep your business in front of its potential supporters while you’ve been unable to welcome guests in person?
I keep doing what I love; cooking and giving back to the community! I’ve been exploring with a number of new recipe’s and our local “essentials” are the beneficiaries along with our dedicated supporters and also a few “singles” in the neighborhood whom we keep checking in on. Through Facebook and Instagram we have kept our followers posted with our updates to the Inn. We are excited to reopen and share our new additions and changes.
Has technology played a part? Social media communication?
Technology has been a tremendous tool in keeping forefront. While Instagram and Facebook are not seeing posts as often as we normally do, we continue our monthly newsletter and in receipt, we have heard back from a record number of recipients in April. Believe it or not but the telephone has been a welcome return. Many, many phone conversations have replaced email and texting now that we have the luxury of time.
What do you see as the path forward as we move out of stay at home mode?
I see North Carolinian’s on the move! Travel! TripAdvisor, American Express and VisitNC webinars all predict domestic travel on the rise with GDP increasing to 7% in third quarter 2020. That is huge for the tourism industry. I hear that travelers top destinations are: Small towns, Beach communities, Remote locations and small populations. The beauty in that is Southport fits them all!
What have you learned building your business up to this point that has helped you deal with these challenges? Any advice for others in a similar situation?
To be flexible! I created a business plan that has changed many times, but never did I think my marketing budget would be diverted to basic household bills. We have the time now to enjoy the veranda, have a cup of coffee and reevaluate the industry pulse. I didn’t have time before to absorb as I am now. Phone conversations along with Zoom meetings and webinars have helped us to hear the needs and learn the new normal so we can be prepared. Another example of being flexible and being connected locally is to acknowledge that families still want to get away! Being unemployed or drastically reduced income, yet cooped up at home and looking for the day they can get out - we hear you! In response we have temporarily adjusted our rates nearly 20%. Just as some employers have given temporary increases to essential employees, there are those who will struggle financially for months. They both need a getaway! We have created a StayCation for our locals. Give us a call or check out our newsletter for details.
What have you learned in dealing with this that will help you in the future, even once things return to some semblance of normal?
Being sensitive to how others may ease back into the norm is primary for us. Everyone has different levels of comfort. For example, I have traditionally served breakfast at the dining table. We have a couple seating areas and we are incorporating them. One couple may not want to sit across from another so they now have the option of sitting in the breakfast nook or the Carolina Room in addition to the 10 Southport Magazine /April /April 2020 / www.SouthportMag.com
traditional dining room. We have three suites and all three couples could have breakfast in separate rooms if they so choose.
What helps you stay focused on the positive? What has been the biggest challenge to that?
What keeps me positive is sitting on the veranda watching the continued movement of commerce on the Cape Fear. As long as the ships continue I know, this too shall pass! It may not be my timing but I couldn’t think of a more lovely place to be during this pandemic. Also, we have a monthly newsletter! You can sign up on our website, send a message on LaPolena’s Facebook page or call. Newsletter recipients are the first to hear of specials such as the StayCation and upcoming fun events.

Keeping The Doors Open Humility and Kindness Are The Key STORY AND PHOTO BY JEFFREY STITES
W
hen she had to close the doors to in-store customers Cattail, Cottage owner Pam Sexton took the opportunity to clean, re-organize and even re-paint the store. We loved her knack for making the best of difficulties so we asked her a few questions about how she’s facing her challenges. How did your online presence change as a result of all this? My online presence has not necessary changed. Since our closure to the walk-in traffic in March, it has become our only means of generating sales. I have made it a priority to add more of our in-store products to our website and offered more frequent online specials for customers to take advantage of. It has always been my goal to offer the same items online as I do in my brick and mortar location, however, time constraints have limited my ability to do so. With the restrictions in place, I have been given the opportunity to finally achieve my original goals.
What are a few of the lessons you’ve learned? Business or personal? There is always a learning curve to any small business. I opened just one year prior to the stock market crash of 2008. The very first and most important lesson I learned about small business is from the moment you wake in the morning, you never know what kind of day you are going to have. You have to be prepared and willing to adapt your business to any situation, good or bad. You have to love what you do for the amount of hours and work you will put into your business. Balancing the demands of your business with the needs of your family is also a very crucial. It is a give and take relationship.
mation from other countries, our Federal Government, our local officials, the media and so forth. There are three possible scenarios about information: it can be true, false or is continually being revised and updated, therefore, making it hard to make sense of anything. I have found it most helpful to talk with fellow business owners, friends, and neighbors. Different people have different experiences. My experience has helped others and in some cases, theirs have helped me. I don’t feel that I have learned anything new, however, I have been reminded of what is truly important to me. I say “to me” because we all have different values and beliefs. Life was busy and crazy up until 3 months ago. Now it is busy and crazy in a different way...and that gave me a new perspective. Perspective is an important part of how we react to what is going on around us. I have also been reminded that a little bit of humility goes a long way. We are all having different experiences right now. I don’t believe we are all in the “same boat” so to say, but we are all experiencing the same storm. So be humble and kind to each other.
Any advice for others trying to navigate these waters? Be positive! It may feel like dire times, and I am the first to admit I have my share of doubts creep into my mind. However, we will get through these times, one day at a time. We may have a new “normal” for a period of time or forever, but as humans, we can adapt and overcome. I believe it is important to be calm, patient, respectful and supportive to each other. Many of us have different ideas and will ultimately make different decisions about the best way to move forward. However, we can still be civil and kind so that we remain a supportive community. The more supportive and respectful we are, the faster we will be able to return to our “normal” lives. Cattail Cottage is having a careful, phased opening. What has the response from the community been like to your attempt to shift out of doing business in person? I feel that the community has been extremely gracious and understanding. Many of my regular customers have reached out to me to place orders via my website, email or phone and have expressed their support. They have sent me positive messages on Facebook about how much they miss visiting the shop and that they plan to visit as soon as it is safe to do so. My online presence is a true blessing right now and I am glad I have it as a means of doing business.
What tools have you found most helpful? Are there any that you only learned about during this experience that will remain helpful once things move back towards normalcy? Communication. The entire situation has been very confusing. We are overwhelmed with infor14 Southport Magazine /April /April 2020 / www.SouthportMag.com

ART BEAT
Using Creativity To Chart A New Course
Mary Zlotnick’s Startving Artists Collective FaceBook group offers an opportunity STORY BY CARLA EDSTROM
A
s the world is trying to make sense of a global pandemic, many small businesses have had to close their doors as social distancing has become our new reality. One of the hardest-hit groups of the self-employed is professional artists and craftspeople who depend on art shows, farmers’ markets, galleries and festivals for their income. With the closure of stores, festivals, and events in the area, many artists are searching for other ways to show and sell their work. This is one of those times when being positive and creative can work to change your circumstances. My friend, artist Mary Zlotnick, is one of those people. “I primarily sell my art through art festivals and markets, which have all been canceled,” she said. “This is a learning curve for us all, and I am trying to pivot again. During this time, I have also been reflecting, knowing we will evolve and help each
other and our community. We will emerge, transformed.” A positive attitude is inspiring during these hard times. Right when the COVID-19 shutdowns started, Zlotnick came up with the idea to start a group where artists could post pictures of their work and get their art out on the internet for sale. “Recently, I created a Facebook page to connect local artists with local buyers, called Starving Artists Collective, buy and sell group,” said Zlotnick. Currently, the Facebook page has over 270 members including artists and craftsmen local to Brunswick and New Hanover Counties. “We invite artisans to post one or two pictures a day of affordable but quality artisan products with a link to artisan information so that a customer can order directly. Think of this as an online art gallery/market and just another way to get your products viewed. We are all working together to help one another,” she said. Being influenced by her mother’s batik art, Zlotnick had a strong love for textile work. Using dye and wax on textiles has been around for centuries. In Indonesia, batik (pronounced buhteek) is part of ancestral tradition. Wax is used on fabric to create a design that resists dye colors, creating

a unique design and texture print. After the final dyeing, the wax is removed and the fabric is left with a design. “My moth-
er was an art teacher and often created large batiks for companies — Springmaid and other local companies — so I had grown up around batiks,” she said. “My process starts with unbleached muslin, which I pencil in my design. I then use wax and dye to create an image. Then I use dye again, sometimes like tie-dyeing,” she said. “My mother had a huge influence on knowing batik. But I have been drawn to collage artist Romare Bearden and graffiti artist, Keith Haring. Maybe because they create outside the box. I love tactile work, clay, and fabric,” she said. “The beach area has had a lot of influence on my art. I love creating blue herons, mermaids, bicycles, pelicans, and flowers. However, I have created skylines and other designs. Lately, I have been attracted to painting on silk...using resist and dyes. I love how it has transparency and brilliance that I can’t get with fabric.” Zlotnick is not a beginner at chang-

She’s lived in many parts of the country, and she holds an undergraduate degree in Business Administration, and also a Master of Arts degree in Public and Social Policy. “When I moved to Pawleys Island, SC, I had brought my holistic line of products I had developed while living in California, including an insect repellent, registered with EPA and sold at Ace Hardware,” said Zlotnick. “While living in Pawleys Island, I registered and named my brand, Authentic Pawleys Life®. I eventually moved to Sunset Beach to be closer to the farmers and art markets I was regularly attending. By 2017, so many people were creating holistic products. So, I pivoted and ended up painting batiks and now, silk paintings,” she said. Making pottery is also very important to Zlotnick. In 2003, she also co-founded Beekman Street Art District in Saratoga Springs, NY and made pottery. Now she takes pottery classes with me at Brunswick Community College in Southport. “I have to keep my hands in clay, it is like breathing for me,” she said. “I cannot just create the same thing over and over. I love the element of surprise. With clay, there is the glaze and batiks it is how the dye will fall and mix. Sometimes I get an idea and have to follow it through,” she said. Maritime Museum Crew Weathers The Storm O
STORY BY JEFFREY STITES
ne of our favorite places is the North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport. The staff is amazing, the displays are engaging and fun, and there’s always something fun to find in the little gift shop. We spoke to Katy Menne, Curator of education, about how they are bringing the fun of the museum into poeple’s homes How has the museum adapted to an online-only presence? What has been most successful?
Thankfully we had ramped up our online presence substantially over the past few years so we were not starting from zero. It has been a unique challenge to find what would best be appreciated, where the needs lay, and how to do all of this staying true to our mission. We opted for a wide range of items that engage a variety of ages and abilities. Each day of the week there is new content on at least one of our platforms. We have seen great success in the live features - craft time on Friday and live learnings on Tuesdays. Though many appreciate our Sunday stretch on Instagram (yoga poses adapted to fit maritime themes).
Where do the ideas for activities come from? Are you noodling this out in house of is there discussion within the museum community? Our planning process has always been a little unconventional. Our crew has weekly Facetime staff meetings and we throw out different ideas. A lot of the time it is something random that someone says “hey you know what would be cool...” and we roll with it. We try to adapt programs we already had planned - so our third Tuesday lecture series is very popular so we have just moved it to a virtual platform. We also have a big following with our cooking program so we have opted to create short little videos on a different dish. ADULTS

Calling All Happy Campers Summer Camp Is Not Just For Kids STORY BY LISA P. STITES
S
ummer camp is a time for adventure. It’s a time for making new friends and maybe learning something new, like paddleboarding or even a little local history. And did you know that it’s not just for kids?
Oak Island is again offering its summer camp for adults, with two week-long sessions this summer for up to 12 campers per session. The Oak Island Experience, August 10-14 includes stand up paddleboarding, kayaking, learning the history of Oak Island and Southport, a visit to Sea Biscuit Wildlife Shelter, a tour of the Oak Island Lighthouse, fishing, and a round of pickleball. Campers who complete this session are encouraged to join the “Beyond the Bridge” experience the next week, August 17-21, for a taste of adult recreation on the island and across the bridge. Registration has opened for the first session, and will be available for the second session at a later date. The cost is $100 for residents and $150 for non-residents. Visit https://bit.ly/3bHbSRm for registration details. Parks and Recreation Director Rebecca Squires said that they’re looking into holding a session in the fall too. This is the third year for adult day camp, and Squires said it was very popular right from the start. “The campers love the adventure, the connections and friendships they make with other participants, and trying new things,” Squires said. “Just like the kids camps, the first day is usually quiet, and the participants do not converse much between themselves. But by the last day, they will not stop talking! I overheard them swapping emails, phone numbers, and planning to go out to dinner together on the last day of camp in 2019,” she said. The Department has offered kids camps for many years, and Squires said they decided to hold one for adults after hearing from their campers’ parents and grandparents that the kids were having such a great time, they wished they could join in too.
Mother’s Day is coming, and we have gift baskets! Head to our social media to see the offers.
“So we came up with a schedule that would highlight fun things to do on Oak Island for adults during a week. We thought the camp would only appeal to tourists, but we were surprised to find that locals make up the majority of the roster,” Squires said. Mike Powell, local historian and President/Director of the Brunswick Civil War Round Table, will lead the session on Oak Island history, and Rev with Southport Fun Tours will cover Southport history. Mary Ellen Rogers will show campers the Sea Biscuit Wildlife Shelter and its current inhabitants. Camp also includes plenty of outdoor time too. All in all, each week promises to be full of fun and adventure - kind of a staycation and a chance to relive the best part of youth summer camp at the same time. Those carefree days spent as a child camper strongly influence the whole vibe of Oak Island’s adult camp. “We try to bring back the memories you had from camp when you were a kid,” Squires said. Participants get a day camp shirt they have to wear for trips, and all the traditional summer camp activities make an updated appearance. “We have a cookout at the park on Friday, complete with s’mores over the grill,” she said. “We play ‘ice breaker’ games at the beginning of the each day. It’s a great way for someone to break out of their comfort zone, try new adventures, and meet new friends!” Southport Magazine 2016-2017 SOI Chamber Small Business of the Year Winner

St. James Residents 3-D Print Face Masks For Hospice Workers STORY AND PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED

s Lower Cape Fear LifeCare, like healthcare agencies across the country, faces shortages of PPE, LCFL Board of Directors Member Dave Pearce and his friend and neighbor Jim Gerlach are 3D printing face shields for clinical staff members. Lower Cape Fear LifeCare (LCFL) continues to provide care to patients with serious, chronic or life-limiting illness, in patients’ homes or in hospice care centers. While clinical staff utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure patients, families and staff alike stay safe, some PPE items like face masks have experienced supply shortages. Pearce and Gerlach both have 3D printers made by Prusa, a company located in Prague. When COVID-19, the emerging Coronavirus, was first identified, Prusa developed a design to 3D print a face shield and made the software
available on the company website. With the supply shortages facing healthcare providers, the men began using their 3D printers to make face masks for LCFL clinical staff. The 3D printers work by melting plastic, which comes in reels that resemble heavy fishing line, and building objects layer by layer, Pearce said. “The results are amazing, but very slow,” he added. “To make eight face shields, for example, it takes over 11 hours. A full 24 hours of printing yields only about 16 shields.” While the 3D printing makes the basic frame for the face shields, the men needed to find clear material to attach that would provide protection while still allowing for clear vision. They tried simple laminate, like that used to protect documents, but it was not as clear as it needed to be. After searching, they found a clear plastic that would meet their criteria. The men also found plastic shelf liner material to add adjustable straps, making the frames customizable and more comfortable. Since the face shields are entirely plastic, they can be sanitized and reused. “Dave and Jim have put many hours of work into making these masks, and we are so appreciative of their efforts,” said

LCFL President and CEO Gwen Whitley. “Our team continues to provide vital care for those with serious or life-limiting illness during the COVID-19 pandemic, and these face shields help ensure the safety of our patients, their families and our team as we do so.” Since starting in March, the men have
made more than 150 face shields for LCFL staff members to use. “Making these shields has been satisfying,” Pearce said. “We are not only helping our staff and patients stay healthy, we are also letting them know how much we appreciate them.” Lower Cape Fear LifeCare is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing access to the highest quality LifeCare, education, and supportive services to our patients, their families, and the communities we serve. Sharing Art To Help Pull You Through Pescado y Amor Goes Back To Its Online Roots To Help Spread Happiness STORY BY JEFFREY STITES, PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED
M
issy Ronquilo is one of those people who just makes us smile. We talked to her about how she is helping people use art to relieve some of the stress of all of this.
where I dress like the artist and we paint a painting in the style of the artist! It is great fun and brings a lot of laughter, which we need in times like this. I started this series geared towards kids, but we have had so many adults wanting to do it too that we now offer a kids version and adult version. This week we are doing a Frida Kahlo painting.
As soon as we felt that we needed to close our doors , I started making some DIY art kits and thinking of some fun online virtual classes. We have kits in painting, weaving, resin, painting wine glasses and more. These are some really cool fun kits! Not just a paint by number. All kits come complete with instructions and everything you need to complete that art project. We are so grateful, with orders from all over the US. We will ship these kits, deliver them to your house and offer curbside pickup. Our online virtual classes have been doing amazing…we have had a ton of private parties that gather friends and families from east coast to west coast. I supply all materials you need for the online classes. We can ship, deliver, curbside pick up or if you have your own materials we offer different buying options. I also have started a famous artist series…
How has art helped you through this? Either making it or experiencing others’ art?
What have you been doing to adapt the new situation?
Honestly, I have been so focused on keeping our business afloat that I have not had energy to work on my own art. But I am so happy that so many are doing art to keep them busy and sane at this time. Typically art is my happy place.
Why is art important in times like this? What does it do for us?
Making art is a great distraction. It gives your brain something to focus on, or not focus on. You can just zone out when you are creating. It is a form of mediation. Personally, when I am making art I lose track of time and I feel at peace.
What have you learned in dealing with the COVID19 shut down that will help you moving forward? Both personally and from a business and artist perspective?
Oh, gosh I have learned so much. I have learned to have a back up plan for the business, not rely on one aspect for success. We started the business 11 years ago online, and I am just putting it all back to basics. It is like starting over. But it is something I will continue when we get back to some normalcy. We are just trying to move forward and keep going and being okay with whatever the outcome is. I have learned not to take ANYTHING for granted.
Can you speak to community support of the arts during
this?
Our community has been amazing, doing whatever they can to help. By buying gift cards, DIY kits, and signing up for online classes! Love our community. I LOVE YOU!
Please add anything else you’d like.
All of our virtual online classes, and DIY kits, and gift cards can be found on our website www. pescadoyamor.com Even though we have taken a huge financial hit, we are grateful we have each other, that we are a strong community and are in this together. WE Love you, Pescado Y Amor

Worrying Can Lead To More Health Problems--Here’s How To Fight Back STORY BY BRIAN TULLY, MS
Help limit the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) by calling these resources before visiting the Emergency Room.
AND
Stress Less... Feel Better
Stress is sneaky. Especially right now, in the midst of the Coronavirus. Sometimes you don’t even know that you’re feeling it until you turn your head and your neck hurts; maybe you feel a constant pit in your stomach, or you notice your heart is beating faster than normal. The truth is, some stress is normal, but chronic stress (like what can be happening right now with everything going on) can do a real number on your body. It can wreak havoc on your hormones, making you gain weight (especially unhealthy belly fat). And it can also take a major toll on your health,
paving the way for illness and disease. Scientists are learning more all the time about how stress can impact your health. But it seems clear that “chronic psychological stress” can affect your body’s ability to regulate its inflammatory response. Unfortunately, inflammation is associated with practically every disease process affecting our bodies! OK. Enough of all that. I don’t want to add to your stress levels, I just wanted you to be aware of the impact it could be having before I share ways to counteract it. Yes, there are numerous ways to fight back against the excess stress you are feeling right now…and take back control. So, what can you do about it? Most of us have never learned how to use the powers within our own bodies to cope with stress. In fact, many of us were taught to “walk it off” and ignore it, in hopes that it would just magically go away. “Pushing through” is often the worst thing you can do to get through a tough period, since it can keep your stress hormones elevated. If you’re not careful, feeling stressed can even become your new “normal,” so you don’t feel like yourself unless you’re feeling the pressure. Unfortunately, this is the case for way too many of us. The good news is, you

FITNESS can take back control by learning some easy techniques that will calm your body, ease your mind, and lift your spirit. I have an E-book that outlines 24 techniques and tips to help you feel less stressed. I truly believe it will help you lower your stress levels and find more balance in your life. And I am giving away this E-Book right now to help us all breathe a little easier. Your breath is an incredibly powerful tool to combat stress. It’s so important that it’s worth taking several short “breathing breaks” a day. Deep breathing helps reset your autonomic nervous system – the system that controls your automatic functions like your heartbeat, blood pressure, swallowing, etc. – into a calmer space. It only takes 4-5 minutes to feel more relaxed and less stressed. I’ve included 3 detailed techniques in the E-book to help get you started with your breathing practice: one for deep breathing, one for relaxation, and another for energy. Over time, stress can become such a habit that it starts to feel normal. How do you know if stress has become a way of life? · Listen to the voice in your head and be aware of what it’s telling you. Is it repeat-
ing stressful thoughts or phrases throughout the day? That’s one big clue. · Every once in a while, do a quick body scan: is your jaw clenched? Your shoulders tight? Are you holding your breath? · You often feel full of dread, sadness, or anger, and wonder why no one else is getting with the (your) program. If any of these sound familiar, it’s time to start making some mindset shifts, soothing your spirit, and healing your body using the tips spelled out in my E-Book. Please do yourself a favor and download the FREE E-Book from my website (BetterTogetherFitness.com/downloads). There are 24 items that can help you take care of you. You don’t have to do them all to feel a difference. Try them, see what works for you…see what makes a difference. If you find some benefit, please share with a friend or family member. Even though we are all separated right now, we are still Better Together. If you have any questions or other thoughts on the topic, I would love to hear from you! COMMUNITY Libraries Offer Plenty Right From Your Home
I
t should come as no surprise that magazine editors and writers love words, reading, writing, spelling, grammar….well, maybe not grammar. So naturally, the Southport and Leland Magazine families are already big fans of the Brunswick County Library system.
STORY BY LISA P. STITES
With so many people teaching their children at home or looking for new ways to keep themselves entertained, we’re all relying more on what we can find online, and one of the best available to Brunswick County residents is the library system. Don’t have a library card? Though the branches are closed for the time being, you may still be able to get your library card. Just call your local branch to see what information you’ll need to provide. One of our favorite online resources is the e-book service, which allows patrons to borrow books for the e-readers. There’s also a digital library for children, where they can access e-books, videos and audiobooks. NCLive offers media access, tools for learning a new language, and much more. There are lots of teacher and education resources, and access to newspapers and periodicals, including Our State magazine, a periodical filled with feature stories and fabulous photography of North Carolina. There are even online tools for learning new trade skills and how to build a resume. The County has done a great job compiling a list of all the online resources available to library card holders. Read on, and check it out for yourself. •Library System main webpage: https://www.brunswickcountync.gov/library/ •Harper Library (Southport): 910-457-6237 / heather.donnell@brunswick-

Orchestrating Change
W
e asked Wilmington Orchestra Executive Director, Liz Scanlon how it was dealing with the changes to live venues and social distancing guidelines. Here are her thoughts on how the symphony will persevere.
As an avid lover of “going out”, and as the executive director of the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra (WSO), I see the benefits of having an active performing arts scene which brings people together as a community. Going to a performance is more than just going to a concert or a play, it is a social experience. You go out for dinner or drinks, perhaps with friends. You meet old friends in the lobby or new people that you are sitting next to, and ultimately, you spend your money in your community. But with everything “dark” for the foreseeable future, even though it is frightening for an arts organization not to open or perform, it is for the good of our community. Now that we are 20 months post Hurricane Florence, I know that many small businesses and arts organizations were just starting to see “the light at the end of the tunnel” and now we are faced with another challenge. But as a community we are all in this together. I am hopeful that our rescheduled concerts will be performed in the late summer and that we all are able to open back up for our c o m m u n i t y. But then again, it is hard for all of us to wrap our head around what the future holds. On a bright note, I am constantly reminded by our patrons, donors and the community that they want to support the WSO and the local arts. Because, like every individual and business, a r t s - re l a t e d or not, COVID-19 has made a tremendous impact in all our lives. We are all making some really hard decisions to ensure the fuHEADING ture of our community. In the absence of Wilmington Symphony Orchestra | www.wilmingtonsymphony.org | (910) 791-9262 public events, we are all trying to answer the question about how to remain current when we cannot perform. How do we involve our community when everyone is telling us to socially distance? The internet, of course, has been the answer. Social media posts, email blasts, ZOOM interviews and newsletters already are common, and Wilmington is booming with new content just for the crisis. The WSO is rebroadcasting archived concerts weekly on WHQR and I marvel at the innovation from other arts organizations. The Arts Council of Wilmington & NHC partnered with members of the WSO and Good Shepherd Center on the Wilson Center’s Ghostlight Series, Thalian Hall is presenting a Cinematique Sofa Series on WHQR, UNCW is presenting the “Best Seat in the House”. This list is just a small representation of what is out there in the Cape Fear region. We are also grateful that larger arts organizations across the country have been able to share their productions, so that there is always something new to watch or listen to from the comfort of our homes. Challenges aside, we are looking forward to the future but worry about opening too fast. There is always the fear that will surround larger group events and will take time for people to feel comfortable going out. When we all feel like we have done the right thing I am sure there will be music, plays, festivals and joy because our community cannot survive without it.
