his month’s cover features The Old Brunswick Jail, someplace that some people, including our writer Patty before she made her visit, might think an odd choice for a tourist attraction. But we think that you will discover as soon as Patty did how interesting even such an unpleasant building as a jailhouse can be when shown off by someone who loves sharing the stories it holds. We hope you’ll take advantage of the Jail’s expanded summer hours and make a visit yourself!
S
peaking of sharing stories, this month we get to share the stories of three relatively new businesses in our community. The entrepreneurs that opened Live Oak Med Spa, Quicksand Beach Concierge and The Apothecary told us what they have to offer the community, and how they may be able to make your life easier, healthier and more enjoyable. We are blessed to be able to bring stories like this to you, and our community is blessed to be in a position that we can be a fertile ground for people to grow their dreams into reality.

Southport Plein Air Festival Is Back
The Southport Plein Air Festival seeks to create not just a celebration of painting, but a celebration of the wide range of artistic expression flourishing here and its contribution to the strength of our entire community. A similar grant awarded last year funded Gullah Geechee historian and master storyteller Anita Singleton-Prather’s portrayal of the First Lady of Gullah, Aunt Pearlie Sue.
STORY AND PHOTOS BY JEFFREY STITES
A
fter decades of living in this community, I finally got to see Southport’s Plein Air Festival for the first time last May. I walked around downtown on a Friday afternoon looking for painters, and ended up finding them in some of what are, I suppose not at all coincidentally, my favorite spots to take photographs. Not being an artist myself, I was mesmerized by the people creating reproductions of some of my favorite familiar spots on canvas as I watched. I chatted with a few of the artists and found that some had never been to Southport before, but after this experience, expected to return. The next day, at the wet art sale and judging that concludes the festival, one of the artists I’d spoken with won the coveted people’s Choice Award! I was hooked, and can’t wait for this year’s festival to kick of on Friday, May 13.
The Southport Plain Air Festival is a partnership between the City of Southport and the non-profit Up Your Arts, and this year they’re bringing a Hispanic theme to the outdoor art event. Highlights will include a Latin-themed dinner reception on Friday, May 13, to meet the artists; several activities on Saturday, May 14, featuring Brazilian and Spanish guitar performers, traditional Hispanic meals and treats served from mobile food trucks, and children engaged with Mexican folk-art projects during Kid’s Plein Air.
The artist dinner reception will be held from 4-6 pm at the Southport Community Building, 223 E. Bay Street. Tickets are available in advance at https://bit.ly/ southportpleinair. The $15 entrance fee includes entertainment by jazz pianist David Pope, a meal of carnitas and rice, and one glass of beer or wine, with more available for purchase. The Back Porch Rockers will perform for the general public from 6-8 pm immediately following Friday’s reception on, of all places, the Community Building’s back porch. This popular six-piece band features a playlist all can enjoy, from classic rock to beach music. The band members are accomplished musicians who generously donate their time and talents during benefit concerts for non-profit organizations in the area, like Up Your Arts, as a way of giving

back to the community. Be sure to bring your own lawn chairs and refreshments. Activities on Saturday, May 14, will take place in Keziah Memorial Park at the corner of Moore and Lord Streets until 3 pm at no cost to the public. The park will be full of children participating in Kid’s Plein Air from 10 am-2 pm – Mexican folk art crafts, paints, and other supplies provided – along with Pollock in the Park, a mural extravaganza led by Ginger Hedblom of 2nd Story Art and Music Studio.
One of the highlights of the event every year is the Wet Paint Sale, Saturday’s final activity. Keziah Park will close from 3-4 pm, while artists return to set up their newly completed paintings for display and sale to the public. Anticipation will build as potential customers gather on the sidewalk, waiting in full-view of their favorite painters’ canvasses until a 4 o’clock bell reopens the park and they can rush in to be the first to claim their desired purchases. The
Wilmington’s Tacqueria La Vallita mobile food truck will be at Keziah Park from 11 am - 5 pm serving up specialty tacos, tortes, sopes, and quesadillas. Oak Island’s Lil & John’s Sweetreat Homemade Ice Cream will be on hand to serve up dessert. Hispanic-themed live performances will be featured all day Saturday in Keziah Park; the performances are underwritten by a North Carolina Arts Council Grassroots Grant awarded to Up Your Arts by Brunswick Arts Council. the artists who will be painting those two days along shorelines, in streets and yards, on the grounds of public buildings, in restaurant courtyards and decks – just about any nook and cranny from which a typical Southport scene can be captured on canvas. It’s interesting to see a new take on scenes we see every day, and the artists will likely be interested in your perspective, too.
The Southport Plein Air Festival offers something more personal than cash prizes to the artists who participate: the chance to win the People’s Choice Award bestowed by Wet Paint Sale attendees, who vote once for the artist with the most captivating body of work of the festival. Last year’s winner, Lyudmila Lucy Tomova, has won a variety of state and regional awards since then and is featured in all the graphics for this year’s event, including the t-shirt designs -- which, if you aren’t able to acquire one of her original paintings, might be the next best thing. The award ceremony starts at 5 pm Saturday in Keziah, after the Wet Paint Sale gets underway. The most prestigious of them all is the Mayor’s Award presented by City of Southport Mayor Joseph P. Hatem. Five other judges participate, all people with ties to Southport in some
measure. Two festivals ago, the judges were all artists, themselves, and last year’s group was a collection of art patrons and educators. This year’s judges are still to be
determined. If you can’t attend any of the activities May 13-14, you are invited to seek out

CURRENTS Welcome To The Jail
Old Brunswick Jail Open For Tours Again STORY BY PATTY LANGER, PHOTOS BY JEFFREY STITES
W
elcome to the Jail!” the man said with a Cheshire grin. “Thanks so much for letting me in!” I replied cheerfully as I stepped through the heavy door with thick iron bars on the window. I wondered if anyone had ever exchanged such a pleasant greeting at this place. Thus began my tour of The Old Brunswick Jail in Southport, NC. The Old Jail, located at 318 Nash Street, was built in 1904 and remained in use until 1971, when it was replaced by a single-story brick building located just to the rear. It then served as sheriff’s offices until 1978, when the Brunswick County seat was moved to Bolivia. The jail has been maintained by the Southport Historical Society (SHS) since 1984. In 1998, SHS began extensive renovations on the building and opened it to the public for tours in 2005. While not exactly a creepy old place full of cobwebs and tortured ghosts, the jail is cramped, narrow and heavily fortified with locks and grates. It’s also a fascinating historic museum full of period pieces that transport visitors back to a time when life was harsh, with no electricity, heat, or plumbing until the 1930s. The docent on my visit, Rich Sullivan, shared lots of interesting facts and colorful stories during a tour that lasted about an hour. In the early 1800s, the town (then known as Smithville) built a wooden jail that was subsequently leased to Brunswick County. In 1849, that building was destroyed by a fire, set by an inmate who managed to escape from his second-story cell. Although
plans were quickly drawn up for a new county jail, records show that temporary facilities were used for the next 50-plus years, until finally the current building was constructed in 1904. The new jail (now the “Old Jail”) is a two-story building made of brick and mortar, with steel beams and tin barrel ceilings, a modern design at that time. While virtually fireproof, prisoners still tried to escape by chiseling bricks from the walls to use as weapons. Look closely and you’ll see evidence of their attempts in the cell walls. The building has two front doors; one to enter the jailer’s living quarters and the other used for prisoners. That’s right — the jailer, and his family, lived in the Old Jail! The first floor was their home, while the prison cells were located on the second floor. According to Mr. Sullivan, the jail was somewhat of a family business back in the day. The jailer’s wife cooked for the inmates, and their children commonly delivered the meals. Fresh produce, poultry and fish were sourced from local farms and fishermen. Based on today’s standards, these prisoners ate a
healthy, all-natural diet! In later years, a nearby restaurant catered the jail food and local drunkards were known to cause disturbances just so they could spend a weekend in jail, well fed and well rested! Today, the three rooms on first floor have been transformed into a period display. The entry room has a collection of historical books, a display of food from the time period, and a surprisingly large “booking book” that was used to record prisoners brought to the jail. It’s worth a look to see if you recognize any of the familiar Southport names. To the rear is the “1904 Room” which exhibits the original jailer’s modest living quarters and a flag with 45 stars, representing the states that were part of the union when the jail first opened. Across the hall on the first floor is the “Sheriff’s Room” that houses items from the turn of the century that a sheriff or jailer would have used in the course of their workday, including an antique camera, typewriter, and telephone. There’s also an old still – a contraption that led many a man to the Old Jail. A display charting
the history of Brunswick County sheriffs and police chiefs has recently been enhanced with one that recognizes notable women in the sheriff system. Climbing cautiously up the narrow metal staircase and turning to the left brought us to the jail cells. Designed as a “walkabout cell block” with a triple lockout system, there is a heavy iron door for entering the room, a second door in the iron cage that surrounds the two cells, and locks on each individual cell. Upon entering this room, a jailer would unlock the cage to interact with the prisoners, remaining safe outside the cells. Sometimes, when heat was extreme, low risk prisoners were allowed out of their cells to “walkabout” the room and catch some fresh air through the windows. Docent Sullivan pointed out a small house across the street that used to be a candy

shop, and said that prisoners were known to call out to neighborhood kids and convince them to throw candy up into the windows! For a great photo op, there’s a spot on the wall where you can line up for a mug shot, or even better, step inside one of the cells for a memorable picture to send home to the family. The Old Jail never held anyone famous, unless you count the actress Sissy Spacek, who was “incarcerated” while filming
the movie “Crimes of the Heart.” There were, however, a few notable prisoners. In 1924, a man named C.W. Stewart and his son Elmer were held in the jail without bond, charged with the murder of a U.S. Marshall named Samuel Lilly and his assistant, Detective Sgt. Leon George. The Stewarts, who had been manufacturing bootleg liquor, were eventually convicted and executed. While records show there were other prisoners accused of murder, most were there for drunkenness and disorderly conduct, petty crime, domestic disturbances, or illegal moonshining during prohibition. Across from the cell block are two rooms that were used to hold overflow prisoners when the cells were full, or to house the occasional female prisoner. “The Patch Room” now displays badges donated by visiting sheriffs from all over the country and a handful of internation-

All four walls are covered with words, expressions and drawings penned by inmates held there. Village Treasures
New Thrift Shop Helps Young Families STORY BY LISA STITES, PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED
J
udy VanWuyckhuyse says she failed retirement. In just two years’ time, she went from helping a friend support a young mother in need, to chairing a committee with Samara’s Village, and now spearheading the effort to open a thrift store dedicated to offering sustainable support for the charity’s mission.
All of the proceeds from sales at Village Treasures will support Samara’s Village, a nonprofit organization targeting the problematic teen pregnancy rates in Brunswick County. The store debuts with a grand opening on April 29 at 9 am, and regular hours will be Wednesdays through Sundays from 11 am to 4 pm. The store is in Smithville Plaza, 1513 N. Howe Street. The store will have furniture, home decor, rugs, art, garden and kitchen items, and more. Donations will be accepted
on Mondays and Tuesdays. “It’s going to be amazing, what we can do,” VanWuyckhuyse said. She said the grassroots efforts to create Samara’s Village grew from four women who got together at church and who wanted to do something to meet the needs in Brunswick County. The group has been helping young parents not only with diapers and all the things they need to raise a child, but also with continuing education and job opportunities. Program mentors work with the
young parents until their child is three; one participant even asked her mentors to attend her graduation ceremony. There are currently 19 participants
in the program. One of the big issues the program faces is transportation, helping participants get to school, parenting classes, work, and even doctors’ appointments. “In many cases, these young women are not going to Novant or Dosher because they don’t have the money,” VanWuyckhuyse said. Besides trying to meet transportation needs, VanWuyckhuyse said the organization is trying to reach out into more of the County. “The question is how do we get the word out to the Leland and Shallotte areas. What about the people who can’t get to us? How can we set up satellite Samara’s Village?” VanWuyckhuyse said. “Can we get through to everybody? Maybe not, but we always say one

CURRENTS child at a time.” The group has also been reaching out to youth pastors, athletic directors and other school employees, and providing handouts with information. That’s something program participants have been helping with too. As VanWuyckhuyse explained, many of the volunteers are of retirement age, and they don’t look at things with the same perspective as the teens they are trying to help. Participants have also been involved in getting the store open. “We will have participants volunteering and working at the store, VanWuyckhuyse said. “We have a lot of projects they can do at home, like cutting out the furniture tickets and putting ties on them, and they’re computer gurus. We’re looking at it from a grandmother’s perspective, so we ask them for their feedback.” There are many worthwhile organizations in Brunswick County, and VanWuyckhuyse said that they are often fighting for the same dollar. Like many other groups, Samara’s Village relies on donations, fundraising and grants, but
VanWuyckhuyse said they were looking for a way to create a more sustainable revenue stream. At the same time this
idea was growing, the St. James Service Club had not done its Flea Market for the last couple of years in the pandemic. “When we talked to them, they said they still want the community to benefit, a charity to benefit,” VanWuyckhuyse said. Initially, the idea was to have a twoday sale, like the Flea Market had done, but space was just not available. So the
group decided to open a store instead. It’s been a lot of work to open a store in the space. They’ve used donated paint and shelving, donated labor from local Boy Scouts, churches, Habitat for Humanity and the Knights of Columbus, and lots of help and donations from volunteers. “Every day there is something else and we’re blessed again,” VanWuyckhuyse said. “All these God links come along.”

NC 4th of July Fest
This Year’s Event Will Be Biggest Ever STORY BY JEFFREY STITES
T
he NC 4th of July Festival is back this year and promises to be bigger and better than ever. As we get closer to the festival, there are registrations and other opportunities for involvement popping up like fireworks. This month we share with you a fundraiser, an expanded craft fair, and a brand new event kicking off the festival weekend on the waterway behind Oak Island. Red, White & Blue Shrimparoo
Doors open at 4 pm.
The NC Fourth of July Festival invites the community to the Red, White & Blue Shrimparoo, from 4-7 pm on Sunday, May 1 at The American Fish Company in Southport. All proceeds from this event will benefit this year’s festival which will be held June 30-July 4 in Southport and Oak Island. “The festival is a time-honored and cherished event that thousands of residents and visitors look forward to each year,” said Trisha Howarth, publicity chair for the 2022 N.C. Fourth of July Festival. “It is made possible by funds raised from sponsors and donations from the general public and we count on their support each year to keep the festival free to the community. The Shrimparoo is an easy way members of the community can show their support for the festival while enjoying great food and entertainment.”
Visit www.nc4thofjuly.com to purchase tickets.
Sponsored by Frying Pan and American Fish Company, the Shrimparoo will feature shrimp prepared in various ways, chicken, barbecue pork and all the trimmings. There will be a cash bar and live performance by Band On Fire. Tickets are $75 per person in advance or $100 at the door.
Arts & Crafts Fair Expands One of the highlights of the NC 4th of July Festival will be double the fun this year! After the success of last year’s event at Oak Island’s Middleton Park, this year’s festival will feature Arts and Crafts markets in both the traditional location of Franklin Square Park in Southport and in Middleton Park as well. This means more vendors can participate and shoppers have that many more options for finding exactly what they like. “The anticipation of the increased crowds, coupled with the decrease in public parking facilities in Southport, led to the decision to continue to expand the partnership with Oak Island by adding more events within the town,” said Trisha Howarth, festival publicity chair. “It was a winning combination in 2021, and the festival is grateful for the opportunity to return to Middleton Park in 2022.” Hours for both craft markets will be 10 am - 5 pm on Saturday, July 2; 12 - 5 pm on Sunday, July 3; and 10 am - 5 pm on

BIZ Q&A Live Oak Med Spa
Helping Your Inner Beauty Shine Through STORY BY LISA STITES, PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED
I
t’s been a stressful few years, and it seems like everyone is gearing up for a busy summer season. Whether you need to destress or you want to get ready for all the beach activities coming up, a trip to Live Oak Med Spa may be just what you need. Facials, hair removal, brown spot removal, skin resurfacing treatments — all available right here in Southport with a staff dedicated to making their clients look and feel their best. We talked with Sherrie Cass, FNP-C owner/injector and local healthcare provider, about all the services and treatments she and her staff can provide.
How long have you been helping people look their best, and what kind of services do you offer at Live Oak Med Spa?
al and hyperpigmentation treatment, complexion correction services, medical grade peels and injectable neurotoxins and fillers.
Live Oak Med Spa opened on December 1, 2021, although I have been serving Brunswick County residents in the medical field for over four years. Live Oak offers only results-oriented therapies and integrative skin care including traditional aesthetic facial treatments, top-of-the-line medical-grade skincare products, skin rejuvenation including micro-needling, nano-needling, dermaplaning, painless laser hair remov-
What’s been your biggest challenge in opening your business, and how have you overcome it? Our biggest challenge at Live Oak has been letting Southport and surrounding residents know that we are here. here in Southport. We have focused on advertising with Southport Magazine, installing billboards around town, and social media to get our name out into the community. We love this message on your website: “We believe that everyone is naturally beautiful and unique, but we also understand that most people have insecurities that can hold them back in their life. Our purpose is to enhance your natural beauty and to give you the confidence that you need and deserve.” Can you tell us more about your philosophy, and how you make people feel rejuvenated? At Live Oak, we want to help people feel as beautiful as they naturally are. Everyone is beautifully imperfect, and we focus on natural-looking results. Our goal is helping our clients/ patients gain confidence in their appearance by listening to their concerns and formulating a treatment plan to address those concerns and achieve realistic results.

For someone who has never had any spa treatments, how would you recommend getting started? A luxurious cleansing facial is always a great place to start! We also welcome our clients to schedule a consultation to discuss their concerns and partner with Live Oak Med Spa to build a results-oriented treatment plan that delivers desired results and fits their budget. What’s your most popular service, and why do you think people love it so much? Our number one requested service is our Dermaplane Facial. The Dermaplane facial consists of expertly delivered exfoliation that leaves the skin smooth, glowing, and ready for their skincare products to penetrate deeper giving them better results. Most patients should dermaplane every four weeks since the body naturally replaces skin cells each month. This service is relatively quick, presents no downtime, and gives extraordinary and immediate tone and texture to the skin. Spring is here, which means summer is just around the corner. Can you

Is there anything else our readers should know about you? At Live Oak Med Spa, patient safety is our top priority. Live Oak Med Spa is conveniently located between downtown Southport, St James Plantation and Oak Island — imagine a triangle of sorts. I also reside in Southport, and our
collaborating physician is also located in the area. We can offer a unique security to our patients under any circumstance. The main difference between a Med Spa and a traditional spa is that a Med Spa requires constant medical oversight to ensure clients’ wellbeing. Medical spa treatments and modalities require additional training and medical expertise to provide those services safely and effectively. For example, Live Oak Med Spa utilizes handheld ultrasound guided neurotoxin and HA filler injections. Visualizing the exact location of an injection improves client safety and outcomes. I am a nationally board-certified family nurse practitioner with over 30 years of nursing experience, thereby providing the medical oversight necessary for these services. Most importantly, at Live Oak, you are in experienced and local hands.

BIZ Q&A Big Beach Business
Quicksand Beach Concierge Is Growing STORY BY JEFFREY STITES, PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED
I
’ll admit I didn’t think it would work when I first heard about a business opening on the island that would set up your beach chairs and other paraphernalia for you. I’ve been designated pack mule for beach equipment since I was a child and just took it for granted. But the Blake family thought outside the box and offered people a way to completely de-stress the beach experience, and isn’t that one of the biggest reasons we love our beach time? It offers us a chance to de-stress. Quicksand Beach Concierge found a niche, filled it and has been riding a whirlwind of growth ever since. We spoke to Chasey Bynum about how this all got started, how it’s grown and what the future might hold. When did you start Quicksand Beach Concierge and what were your offerings in the very beginning?
We launched Quicksand in March of 2021. We initially planned to only do chairs, umbrellas and coolers and tossed the beach bonfire idea out as our family loves to have them ourselves. That idea really started the snowball of things. We thought we would do a couple fires and found ourselves way busier than we could have imagined before chair season even started. We realized then that folks wanted experiences they could enjoy as a family while on vacation.
How have those offerings expanded since then?
Bonfires really catapulted things for us in terms of ideas. When we started we roughly had a month of fire season left. We started thinking of ways to recreate that experience in peoples’ homes. We decided on “driveway parties” where we bring a gas fire pit to peoples’ houses and recreate the same idea of unplugged time around the fire, just not on the beach. We still provide all the same things, a s’mores kit, a cooler with bottled water, a speaker, our beautiful resort loungers and a gas fire pit. We quickly realized people are usually

traveling with big groups of either friends or families. They need to eat, and most of our local restaurants can not accommodate large groups, especially during peak season. We decided to look for a private chef to do in-home meals for these large groups. This concept was wildly successful. Folks love to be able to stay on the beach as long as possible and then roll in for dinner still in their swimsuit with no need to leave their house. Low County Boils became a staple as most folks want seafood at the beach. We do all the work. Our chef, Trevor Dye, does all the prep in the home and all the cooking and all of the clean up. The guests enjoy an amazing meal and none of the work. He can do anything from a Low County Boil to a plated surf and turf. The options are really endless. As the season went on we just kept asking ourselves what else? We started offering pop up picnics on the beach. We set up blankets and pillows, candles, string lights, you name it. It’s a perfect way to enjoy a sunset on the point. We even had a guest from the summer call and ask me to arrange a surprise engagement. We set up beautiful lights that said “Marry me”. We’ve done birthday parties…really you name it. I joke I will try anything once. As the season wound down we again started asking ourselves “now what”. Last year we only offered full-service setups, meaning we set up and and take down the beach equipment daily for folks. But we
had a lot of folks ask for drop-off service where we just drop off the equipment to the house and they do the setting up and taking down. Last year we couldn’t accommodate because we were selling out of the equipment we had. Because of the pandemic there was a shortage of beach chairs. We have made a conscious effort to use Made in America. The original chair manufacturer is located in Boone. They were over a year behind in production. We spent the off season buy-

ing and QUADRUPLED our inventory. This season we will offer drop-off service for those who that appeals to more. We are also offering towel service where you will have fresh, clean, quick-dry, sandless towels waiting on your chair and you can leave them behind when you’re done and we will pick them up and launder them. We also noticed we have a lot of day trippers so in an effort to make it super easy for them as well as our weekly guests we are offering beach bag service. When you arrive on the beach a Versa Tote with 2 towels, spf lip balm, a wireless speaker, a bottle of still or sparkling water, cups, koozies, frisbee, trash bag, lens wipes, a pack of baby wipes and hand sanitizer will all be waiting for you. People can also add on Sun Bum Sunscreen and sand toys to complete the package. We tried to think of all the things you need to be able to literally stroll out on the beach with nothing needed but yourself and a swim suit.
Where did the idea for this business come from? What was the impetus to start the business?
The idea came from sitting around a fire
on the beach in February of 2021. We were chatting with our friends Rob and Lindsay Close who own Salt and Sand Realty. We were discussing what the island needed and how often rental homes don’t have chairs. If they do have chairs they are usually in bad repair. Add in the fact that lugging the stuff to the beach is literally the worst part of vacation. I didn’t realize how many people fly in to visit OKI with no ability to bring things like chairs or umbrellas. They usually buy the cheapest option possible and the umbrella is destroyed day one. Our wheels started spinning. We have three kids and originally this was just going to be a small side hustle that they could take over when they could drive. But I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit. Before kids I owned a hair salon and literally love people. If I am going to do something, it’s not going to be small. That side hustle quickly took over our lives.

We were shocked out of the gates that the demographic we served at the start was the older crowd who, because of sand dredging, they were struggling to get up the new dunes much less get up the dunes carrying stuff. Now we serve a wide variety of folks. We have been so blessed that the locals have really rallied around us. We have a good mix of locals and visitors alike. We are starting to see a lot of return guests from last year as the weather warms up. That is the best compliment. We have had groups of 2 up to groups of 50. It’s been a wild ride.
manage and make sure the high level of customer service I expect will still happen.
What has been the best thing about starting this business? What do you enjoy the most?
The people are the best part. I love making a difference for people.
You’re a family business. How do you involve the family? Do you see entrepreneurship as setting an example for your children?
What is your most popular service and why do you think people love it so much?
Our full service set ups remain a steady, but people love our bonfires. I think a fire on the beach is so unique and fun. It’s not hard to do a fire, but honestly without the right tools it’s a lot of work. Folks love to be able to have fun and then just walk away.
What has been your biggest challenge and how are you overcoming it? What lessons have you learned?
No doubt our biggest challenge is scale. We are growing so fast it’s hard to
How don’t we involve the family is a better question. We homeschool our kids so they have had a front row seat for all of this. They have seen us having to learn as we go and figure out things we are clueless about. The first website developer we hired wasn’t a good fit. We were out of time. So they saw me dig in and learn how to build and run a website. I can barely work a computer on a good day. They see us working hard and making things happen even when we don’t want to. They work a lot themselves.
We never make them, it’s only if they want to, but it sure has taught them about money. We pay them just like everyone else, so they have learned about bank accounts and managing money. When we are out and they want something they are quick to figure out how much work it takes to buy what they are looking at. It’s been hard managing homeschool and starting a business but we want our kids to see you can do anything, you just have to be willing to work for it. Our daughter Cohlie is the oldest. She is 13 and I think she has my entrepreneurial spirit. She is always coming up with ideas to make money. I think it’s going to be fun to see what they all do in the next few years. We would love to see this grow into something if they wanted they could take it over one day.
Can you tell me a bit about the food truck? What is its name? Expected launch? What will the menu be like? Where will folks be able to find you?
Whew. This might be our biggest venture to date. Last summer we began joking about a food truck. All of our employees live on the island. We all know the challenge that is eating out during peak sea-

son. We kept joking until it wasn’t a joke anymore. We saw a huge need and decided to try to fill it. The food truck will be called Drifters. Our menu will “always be drifting”. The menu we launch with will be some Southern Inspired classics with a twist. A few of the offerings will be a Hot Honey Chicken sandwich with pickled onions and bread and butter pickles. Another offering will be a Fried Green Tomato with Goat Cheese sandwich, a Smash burger and few other things. All will be hand held items that will be easy to eat on the go or take over to the beach. We will be located on the same food truck lot as Dole Whip right behind Middleton Park and across from the Beach Cabana. We will be open for breakfast and lunch Monday through Thursday and we will do dinner on Friday nights for the concerts and then return on Saturday for breakfast and lunch. We hope that our menu will always be changing keeping it fresh and exciting. Our launch date is looking like late May. We are waiting on some inspections and should be open quickly after that.
What does having a physical location bring to your business. How has sharing the space been working out? Helping both of you? It’s given us the ability to expand. I drove by our building last summer and thought it would be a great space. In August a sign popped up that it was for rent. Commercial space is hard to come by so we jumped on the opportunity. I get a ton of questions about sharing a space. We share the property at 8800 East Oak Island Drive with OKI Bike and Paddle Co. That might be the craziest part of our story yet. Late last summer, I saw them pop
up on Instagram. I loved their vibe. I messaged them just wishing them success and told them we were new too. I offered to help them anyway I could. We had had a business similar to ours in Folley Beach mentor us and I was determined to return the favor. Josh, Dixon and I met at the park and chatted for over an hour. We just clicked. We literally decided to sign a lease with them less than 30 days later, people thought we were crazy. From the outside it’s seems odd to folks, for us it works better than you can imagine. They have become family to us is such a quick time. In fact, last week we had a family emergency that took me out of town. They jumped in and helped with not only the business but getting our kids places. It was a huge weight off of my shoulders. They do ebikes, paddle boards and kayaks. We do chairs, umbrellas and coolers. So it all just works. We both have our lane but send each other business for what the other does. We have retail in their space and then we have an office in the back of the building. It’s really been such a great thing for both of us as start-ups making the leap to brick and mortar. My only fear is we are both outgrowing our building. So we will see what the future holds.

I don’t know exactly what the future holds. I have more ideas than I have time in the day. Matt, my husband, usually has to reign me in. The Apothecary
Biz Spotlight
Local Drug Store Expands Into St. James STORY AND PHOTOS BY BETH KLAHRE
E
d Thomas is a fourth-generation pharmacist and owner of Seashore Drugs and Thomas Drugs on Oak Island, plus three other pharmacies located in Shallotte, Calabash and Little River. Late last year, Ed partnered with a local family, Bill and Denise Hayes, to open The Apothecary at St. James, bringing additional wellness service and health education to Brunswick County.
Ed first met Bill through an independent pharmacy buying co-op, a group purchasing organization for independent pharmacies. When Bill suggested the notion of a new pharmacy, Ed said it was a great idea. The partnership expands on the hometown, customer-focused services that Thomas Drugs strives to provide. “Our pharmacies are accommodating to all patients. We are easily accessible to all our customers and we know everybody’s name,” Ed said. In addition to filling prescriptions, the new pharmacy, located at the St. James Marina, carries over-the-counter products, quality nutrition and vitamin lines, first aid supplies and medications, as
well as boutique gifts like beach bags and towels, sunglasses and readers, cards, hats, holiday gifts, home décor, and housewarming gifts. One of the advantages of the new Thomas-Hayes partnership is community education. The Apothecary at St. James will deliver science-based seminars open to the public at the St. James Community Center on Southport-Supply Road. Topics will include supplements and vitamins, drug-induced nutrition depletion, and diet. The seminars will start later this year.
“You can always talk to the pharmacist. We look forward to fulfilling customers’ needs, taking care of our community, and serving our neighbors.” The Hayes owned and operated a pharmacy in New Jersey for 25 years before relocating to Southport four years ago. That pharmacy served the community, nursing homes in the area, and hospice for the county, as well as selling upscale gifts and home goods. Denise holds degrees in pharmacy from the University of Rhode Island and has experience working in hospital and independent retail pharmacies and home care. Bill continues to work for an independent pharmacy buying co-op. He is a pharmacy tech and an EMT, and the caretaker of four golden retrievers. Denise Hayes, co-owner
“We want to be a resource to our community and are excited to service Brunswick County with free education,” Bill said. He said that just like the other Thomas pharmacies, The Apothecary at St. James offers personalized customer service. “Most insurance is accepted. Special orders will be sourced by the next day if not available the same day. Emergency after-hours service and home delivery for prescriptions are available. The Apothecary at St. James takes care of specialty compounding needs and pet medicines and also offers notary services,” Bill explained. “We are excited about establishing personal relationships with new customers, patients and providers,” added Denise.

Learn how to develop your own style. Immerse yourself in a creative community while you explore the “puebla magica” that is San Miguel de Allende. No experience necessary! So are you an artist, a creative, or do you want to add more depth to your stick figure collection... Are you in dire need of clearing the clutter of your mind and reconnecting to a fresh perspective? If you’ve never been to an art retreat it’s about time that changes. You know what they say... ... there’s no better time than the present. Creative retreats often meld the principles of exploring & meditation with your juicy creative process. Letting go of all the jabber influencing you on a daily basis put your analytical mind away and brings forth the creative mind. It’s like trying on a new hat. But how does a creative retreat paint a landscape for inspiring artists? Let me tell you how. Why Creative Retreats are Necessary There is just something about intending to “get away” that shifts your mindset from production to creation. Just a little space goes a long way. Space from your to-do list, space from your daily routine, and space from the pressures of even living/working are all reasons to sneak in a creative retreat. That space brings me clarity around decisions that are plaguing me, creativity around projects I keep putting off, and fresh energy to try new things. Reconnect to Yourself Retreats give you time to disconnect from your daily stress... And reconnect with what’s inside you. Creativity stems from the inside out, that’s why slowing down without stimulation from the outside world is so important for artists. Many creative retreats give participants the opportunity to use meditative techniques that foster creativity. Thus bringing a sense of calm and center. When you shut off influence from an unnatural and fast-paced environment your inner light gets its time to shine. Explore New Things Doing new things is good for you.

A
s if cool classic cars weren’t enough, two upcoming shows feature much more. Oak Island is adding Seafood to the mix and the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) is bringing in airplanes to show off next to the wheels. The Town of Oak Island’s first annual Seafood Festival and Car Show rolls into Middleton Park on Saturday, May 7. The park will fill with classic cars and booths and food trucks serving local seafood favorites. There will also be live music on the stage and craft vendors. The event will run from 10 am to 3 pm and is free to attend. The EAA’s wings and Wheels Event will fly into the Cape Fear Regional Jetport the following weekend, on Saturday, May 14. Organizers are expecting more than 70 cars and up to two dozen aircraft to be on display and judged in the show.
The EAA will have its own aircraft on dispaly as well and the Civil Air Patrol and Oak Island Water Rescue will have informational booths set up. For all the hungy car and plane fans, there will be a pancake breakfast from 8:30 - 11 am featuring pancakes, sausage, coffee and juice for $6 a plate. Lunch will be hambergers and hot dogs served from 11:30 am - 1:30 pm. Live music will be provided by NowCat. All proceeds from the event go toward sending a young person to the EAA Air Academy Camp.

Painting Workshop
Learn To Complete A Work In One Sitting
I
f walking around Southport during the Plein Air Festival and watching artists bring what they see to life on canvas awakens your artistic spirit, but you aren’t sure how to begin, a workshop benefiting Stepping Up For Arts might be a great way to get your feet, and brush, wet. The workshop is the weekend following Plein Air, Friday and Saturday, May 20 and 21 from 9:30 am to 4 pm each day at the St. James Community Center. Led by instructor and local artist Joseph Bardani, the workshop will focus on an “alla Prima” approach to painting. Alla Prima refers to completing a painting completely in one sitting using bold, expressive brushwork. Artists will learn to use a painterly approach, emphasizing large, simple shapes to suggest detail rather than focus on it. The cost of the workshop is $190 which will benefit Stepping Up For Arts, a 501(c3) organization supporting the arts in Brunswick County Schools. A supply list will be provided. Registration information is at https://www.stjamesartisans. com/art-workshops-southport.html

Cemetary Honored
John N Smith Cemetary Joins National Register of Historic Places STORY AND PHOTOS BY JEFFREY STITES
S
outhport’s newest history museum lies peacefully under the shade of giant live oak trees, quietly telling the story of the city’s African American community. Thanks to the efforts of John N. Smith Restoration and Preservation Inc, with the help of the City of Southport, the Southport Historical Society and the community at large, the John N. Smith Cemetery at 250 Leonard Street is now the only stand-alone African American cemetery on the National Register of Historic Places. “Your ancestors are well pleased with your efforts,” said NAACP NC President Deborah D. Maxwell at a ceremony for the unveiling of the National Register plaque. The cemetery dates back to the 1870s and is named for the man buried in the earliest marked grave. In 1880 the land was purchased by the CME Church and later expanded with another land purchase by a committee of all five of Southport’s African American congregations. There are 500 marked graves in the cemetery with at least an additional 1,243 unmarked graves, discovered recently with ground penetrating radar. Liz Fuller, president of the Southport Historical Society, spoke of the importance of having this space to newly freed African Americans in the mid-1800s. “For the first time they were able to bury their family members together, and to gather to mourn in broad daylight,” she said adding that as family members tended graves, they shared the stories of those who had gone before. Those stories include tales of Civil War soldiers who fought for their own freedom, educators, doctors, nurses midwives, fishermen, fire fighters, police officers and politicians, as well as the very tall Elias Gore who lived from 19061944 and was known throughout Southport as ‘the Gentle Giant.” “We gather today on sacred ground to not only commemorate the spirituality but to commemorate the historical significance and the contributions of the African American community to Southport,” said Southport Mayor Joe Pat Hatem. The cemetery is gated but open to visitors. It lies directly across the street from Lowe White Memorial Park.

May Roundtable
The Shenandoah Valley Campaign STORY AND PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED
T
he Brunswick Civil War Round Table celebrates its 12th Anniversary by welcoming back popular guest speaker Phillip Greenwalt. The May 3 meeting features Greenwalt and his long-awaited presentation entitled, “If this Valley is Lost…” a major snow storm prevented Philip from traveling to the January 4th meeting. But, that’s history! The Round Table will celebrate its 12th anniversary of providing informative and entertaining monthly Civil War-related programs as a public service to all area residents, and the monthly meeting will be held at Hatch Auditorium on Caswell Beach. Registration begins at 6:15 pm and the program starts at 7 pm. Everyone is welcome, and the visitor fee of $10 can be applied toward the $25 annual membership dues.
To provide some insight into his presentation, in the spring of 1862, General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson spearheaded the Shenandoah Valley Campaign charged with defending
western Virginia from an invasion by Union troops. At that time, he wrote to a staff member, “If this valley is lost, Virginia is lost.” Fortunately for Jackson, he was victorious.
Two years later, in the fall of 1864, the Shenandoah Valley is again the target for the Northern war effort, and the outcome is once again crucial for the salvation of the Confederacy. The Shenandoah Valley, the “Breadbasket of the Confederacy”, was one of the most strategic areas of Virginia. It was an agriculturally rich area with millions
of bushels of wheat produced, and plenty of livestock, which were used to provide sustenance to Virginia’s armies as well as the Confederate capitol of Richmond. Standing in their way was a Confederate force commanded by Lieutenant General Jubal A. Early. Within his ranks stood the proud remnants of commands that had served under the late “Stonewall” Jackson who two years prior, on May 2, 1863, was accidentally shot and killed during the Battle of Chancellorsville by one of his own Confederate soldiers. Much like the spring campaign

COMMUNITY of 1862, the chances to stave off disaster for the Confederacy, and possibly the fortunes of their cause, were still the stakes facing the Confederates as the Federals prepared another invasion of the Shenandoah Valley. This campaign, which would become a microcosm of the overall war by 1864, tested the prediction written by the late “Stonewall” Jackson in 1862: “If this Valley is Lost…”. Phillip Greenwalt is the co-founder of Emerging Revolutionary War and a full-time historian with Emerging Civil War. He is the author or co-author of five books on the American Revolutionary War and the American Civil War. Phil graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history from Wheeling Jesuit University, and holds a graduate degree in American history from George Mason University. A 14-year veteran of the National Park Service, he is currently the Chief of Interpretation and Education at Catoctin Mountain Park in Thurmont, Maryland.

ART BEAT
Classic Painting
to be cleared off after the feast.”
Capturing Moments With Still Life STO RY BY CARLA EDSTROM
S
till-life painting has been around forever and is still a historically significant art form. Even as the styles and techniques have evolved, the still-life gives us a glimpse of a moment in time. Many still-life paintings are situated around a table full of food items or flowers and enlighten the viewer to what tableware was used in that time or what food was plentiful. Still-lifes give a glimpse of what daily life was like before our time. Artist Marian MacKerer has been using oil paints for the past 14 years to create her refined still-life work. “I am a contemporary still-life artist,” she said. “After a retail management career and raising two children, I started painting in 2005, taking an informal acrylic class which led to completing an AFA in Studio Art from Montgomery College, Rockville, Maryland, in 2008. I enjoy painting fruit — anything with form— glass, and fabric, so you will see that in my paintings. I like to take multiple small objects and paint them on a large canvas. I have painted corks, bottle tops, and oysters that way,” she said. “I do enjoy painting dog portraits too. It’s fun to watch their personality come across the canvas. Since I have been living on the coast though, my subjects have included pelicans, oysters, and the ocean.” Always the creative soul, MacKerer feels a strong desire to create. “I paint
because I need to create,” she said. “I graduated from Bloomsburg State University, in Pennsylvania, with a degree in Biology. I couldn’t find a suitable job in that field so I fell back on what I knew, which was sewing. I eventually managed two retail fabric stores before quitting to raise our two children,” said MacKerer. “I also took Tole painting classes which led to an acrylic class taught by a local artist. I enjoyed that so much I realized I needed a higher level of instruction.” Taking that step of enrolling in an art class proved to be a great direction for MacKerer’s artwork. “I enrolled in the community college art program where I received an AFA in Studio Art. I was lucky enough to be chosen for a semester internship at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, preparing paint drawdowns of different manufacturers of acrylic and oil paint. That was a memorable experience, being in the Conservation Lab where masterpieces were being cleaned and repaired.” Mackerer’s sense of detail and form is evident in her still-life paintings. “I like to set up a still life, draw sketches first to see if composition is correct, then draw it using charcoal onto the canvas, after I start the underpainting. From then on, I layer paint till I am satisfied with the results,” she said. “I usually work in oils but occasionally use acrylic on paper or canvas. I get inspiration from everyday things. You can take any object laying around and set it up in a still life. I have painted my kids’ toys, Mr. Potato Head, marbles, corks, fish lures, to name a few.”
46 Southport Magazine/ May 2022 / www.SouthportMag.com
MacKerer’s favorite of her own work is a lovely still life of three Gala apples set juxtaposed on striped fabric. I love this painting as well. The apples look thrown on a table cloth waiting for a picnic. The way she captured the light coming in and dark shadows is really nice. The 3-dimensional quality is outstanding. And leaving the price sticker on the apples really display’s a sense of humor and technical ability. ‘Three to Jive’ has also won a few awards at local art shows. “It was fun to paint and I am very proud of it because it is the accumulation of 18 years of practicing and painting,” she said.
Finding new inspiration comes from many places for artists. Looking at other artists’ work can be a muse leading them in a totally different direction. “Looking through artist magazines, reading the journeys of other artists. Seeing other artist work inspires me to keep painting. Their techniques will influence me to try something new like palette knife and cold wax. I study paintings to find out what I like about them, make a list, and then try to incorporate that into my creation. It can be brush strokes, light, shadows, or a color triad I haven’t tried. I have a lot of lists in my studio to remind me what I like. If I’m having trouble, I go back to my apples and pears. I usually have them in the fridge, so I always have something to
With her love of still life paintings, it’s no surprise that Mackerer’s favorite artist is 17th-century Dutch artist Willem Claesz Heda. “His ‘Banquet Piece with Mince Pie’ is at the National Gallery and I would look at it every chance I could. The light, shadows, and reflections are so real it’s like the table is right in front of you waiting

paint. That’s the great thing about a still life painter, everything is up for grabs.”

For the last four years, Mackerer has been juried into the Wilmington Art Associated Azalea Festival show. Check out her website at www.marianmackerer.com.
