IN THIS ISSUE
TheMay Music Issue is back! As some of you may remember, in The Before Times, Southport Magazine dedicated each May issue to local music. We felt the time was right to revive that traditon. In this issue you’ll find stories on an award-winning internet radio station broadcasting right from Oak Island, a local shop selling vinyl record albums, and some area residents who’ve followed their musical calling right to Wilmington’s choral community. But the biggest section is a new idea -- our very first Band Directory. You’ll find information from dozens of local musicians, from who they are and what they play, to where to hear them and how to book them.
his is also the first edition printed by our new friends at The Robesonian in Lumberton. Changing printing presses has been a big deal behind the scenes, and we are excited for all theopportunities working with these new partners will open up for us. Enjoy!

Currents Music Mafia Radio
Broadcasting To The World From Oak Island
STORY BY PATRICIA LANGER, PHOTOS BY JEFFREY STITES
Does anything beat listening to live music on a warm summer night by the shore? Fortunately for us, the live music scene in our area has been emerging over the last few years, with a rise in the number of venues matched by a rise in the level of musical talent. Not only are there some terrific bands at the weekly summer concerts in Middleton Park and Franklin Square, but just about every bar, restaurant and wine shop in Southport and Oak Island has added live music to their menu. Now there’s another place in town that plays great music 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year round! It’s Music Mafia Radio, the streaming radio station that airs from Oak Island and plays independent artists in a wide range of genres, from country to rock to singer-songwriters. It’s music you definitely need to hear!
Music Mafia Radio is an internet radio station that you can stream for free on your computer by going to https://musicmafiaradio. net. You can also stream it through Sonos, Alexa or a Roku TV. On your cell phone, listen to it by downloading the free Live365 app and click on the station. Music Mafia Radio’s motto, “it’s the music that matters,” speaks to their mission of providing a platform for independent musicians, where the goal is to give more visibility to the artist, not the station. It’s also a refreshingly unique experience for serious music listeners that exposes them to indie artists and songs they would not normally hear on traditional FM radio stations, all without commercials, gimmicky stunts, or oversized radio personalities.
Scott Stephenson is the owner/operator and DJ of Music Mafia Radio. His on-air moniker “Coz” stems from his lifelong love of Frank Zappa and his favorite song, “Cosmik Debris.” Coz has a calm, mellow voice and a radio personality that is humble and friendly. He’s also pretty funny. But Coz is not in this for personal fame; he stays true to the idea of promoting the indie artists, frequently praising their talents and imploring listeners to “buy their music! Buy their merchandise!”
Music Mafia Radio is not new, but Stephenson has recently embarked on a mission to grow its presence in our area. The station was formed in 2016 by Rick Landstrom and has amassed a large, diverse listening audience over the last seven years. Stephenson came
across MMF in 2017 as a listener, while he was living in Colorado Springs. He joined the staff in 2019 and took over the station in 2020, not long after he moved to Oak Island.
A Vermont native with music in his veins, Stephenson attended the prestigious Berkley School of Music, where he focused on the saxophone. (And he just happened to room with Branford Marsalis, the legendary jazz saxophonist who led the Tonight Show band in the 1990s and who has played with Sting and The Grateful Dead!) Stephenson can also play the clarinet, oboe, and flute, but these days considers himself primarily a pianist/keyboardist. Although he mainly listed to rock as a youth, he was exposed to all different types of music as a student at Berkely, which broadened his overall musical appreciation.
After college, Stephenson worked in the music business for a while, mainly as a buyer for a big record chain in New England. Eventually, he gravitated toward a more stable career in corporate technology, once he and his wife decided to have a family. They lived in Indianapolis for many years and eventually landed in Colorado Springs, but relocated to Oak Island.
“We came to visit friends in 2019 and we were hooked! I was looking at real estate on the island before our trip was even over,” he said.
While it’s not uncommon for people who retire to the coast to pick up part-time jobs, they’re usually a little bit less intense that run-
ning a radio station. (Like landscaping or freelance writing, for example!). I asked Scott’s wife, Jenny, if she always knew her husband wanted to be a DJ.
“I honestly didn’t know that it was ever in the plan. However, I’ve always known that he’s a walking, talking encyclopedia of musical knowledge and history, with an amazingly good ear for music and all of its layers, so this probably is a natural progression for him.”
According to the dictionary, the word “mafia” can be used to mean “a closed group of people in a particular field, having a controlling influence.” So, while Music Mafia Radio aims to create a sense of family between its musicians and listeners (its hashtag is #onefamilia,) it also works to close out the corporate titans of the music business who have exerted an enormous amount of control over the airwaves and the musicians for years.
Former owner Landstrom explained it like this: “Coming up with the name was actually quite simple. I’ve always been in love with mob movies and such. That’s number one. Secondly, I thought it was also a good reflection of how I felt about the whole corporate thing and how they run every aspect of an artist’s life, to the point that artists are not really being original anymore. So, much like the mafia, I thought we would do it our way; ‘our’ meaning the broadcaster and the artists. We were kind of our own force to be reckoned with.”
But don’t let the name fool you. The music played on this station is not always heavy and
intimidating. There’s a softer side to this “mafia.”
Stephenson says his station does not focus on any particular genre, just good music. He looks for really talented, independent musicians, and stays away from nationally recorded music that he feels is oversaturated on the FM stations. At any given time, MMR has between 400 and 500 artists from all over the world in active rotation. Carolina musicians make up about 10 percent of that number, which is one of the larger concentrations. You may recognize a few local favorites, like American Idol contestant Ryleigh Madison of Whiteville signing with Kindred, or The Cliff Wheeler Band, a regular at the Ocean Crest Pier.
“MMR started playing us in 2019,” Cliff Wheeler said. “It was the first radio station we were on and it remains the easiest station to work with.” He went on to explain, “We’ve since been picked up by some of the bigger stations, but we get very little play time. You have to be on a major label to get consistent air time from them. Coz is our biggest supporter!”
Stephenson says he looks to add about a dozen or so new artists to the rotation each month, but it’s not always easy to find the quality of music he wants. Apparently, he has a reputation for being extremely picky. Stephenson received about 12,000 emails from musicians last year, and of that he says he only liked about 500 of them! This year he’s on track to review about 18-20,000 email requests for air time.
His hard work reaps rewards for the artists, who receive significant play time and expo sure, as well as the listeners, who are able to talk with artists in MMR’s live chat room and listen to on-air interviews with featured art ists. Stephenson’s work also reaps rewards for the station. MMR has won numerous industry awards, including the International Singer Songwriters Association Radio Station of the Year in 2019 (gold) and 2022 (bronze). The station has been nominated again in 2023. MMR also won the SocialStars Radio Station of the Year award in 2021, and was a finalist for the Who’s Hoo Radio Station of the Year in 2022.
But it’s not the awards that Stephenson is most proud of, it’s the fact that Music Mafia Radio has become a trend setter for other small, independent radio stations.
“There are a number of other stations around the world that pay close attention to the new artists we bring into rotation. It is not unusual for us to bring somebody into rotation, only to see them get added to other stations in the week or two after our debut. For me, this a moment of pride for a couple
Celebrating Ten Years of Serving Our Community www.SouthportMag.com /May 2023/ Southport Magazine 4
of reasons. First, it proves that we are finding artists that are creating the kind of music that has wide public appeal. More importantly, it demonstrates that we have the ability to bring higher visibility to the artists we support, which is the core of everything we do.”
While Stephenson clearly has a good ear for music, so do his listeners. MMR’s audience is very large and geographically diverse right now, with people logging in from as far away as Russia and Iran! (Because the radio station is streamed, its range is not limited.) Surprisingly, the Pacific Northwest accounts for the largest segment of listeners in the United States.
“We’ve been fortunate over the years to connect with a number of artists up there, many of whom we’ve had the pleasure of hanging out with at shows.” Stephenson said. “There is such a great music scene going on in Washington State, and they have large and loyal fan bases that they encourage to listen to the station. This is actually how most listeners (up until now) have discovered MMR — they see a social media post where one of their favorite bands is tagged in our posts, or the artist has tagged us in one of their posts.”

People from the Carolinas make up the second largest group of listeners. The effort to attract a local listener base is something new to Music Mafia Radio and presents a challenge that Stephenson looks forward to. One way to do that, he thinks, is by engaging in community events like the farmers markets and town concerts. He’s also considering airing segments that spotlight Oak Island and Southport events, non-profits and community groups; listing a local events calendar; and perhaps even airing broadcasts from the Ocean Crest Pier and the summer markets.
He also intends to begin seeking partnerships with local small businesses, offering to air segments on their products and services. Currently the station does not have any advertising; it is truly a labor of love.
“Coz and his team are honestly doing this for the artists. They are incredibly supportive of the indie scene. There is no ulterior motive – he’s not making money,” musician Chris Wheeler confirmed.
Unlike the big music streaming apps that offset free services with tons of advertising, Stephenson currently bears all the costs to run the Music Mafia Radio station. Although overhead is minimal, since the station operates from Stephenson’s home, there are fees associated with the Music365 network, licensing fees, and website domain fees, as well as equipment costs. With the growth of the
station, Stephenson’s goal is simply to break even.
In the meantime, Music Mafia Radio will continue to do what it does best, provide a platform for amazing indie artists and an awesome experience for music lovers. Coz produces live shows Monday through Thursday at 8 pm, including a “Top 30 Countdown” on Monday nights. He also does live shows Monday and Friday mornings at 10:30 am. The rest of the week, the station has continual programming 24/7, curated by Coz. It’s truly great music — we hope you are listening!

Biz Q&A Big Love Vinyl
Oak Island Has A New Record Store
STORY AND PHOTOS BY JEFFREY STITES
Forthose of us of a certain age (and increasingly for some of the kiddos as well), the convenience of Spotify will never trump the visceral joy of dropping a needle on a vinyl record. I liken it to the difference between a digital photo and a film print. There’s just a certain SOMETHING that the analog versions have that the digital ones never will. It is now easier than ever to indulge your analog soul with the opening of Big Love Vinyl in the Crossroads Gathering Place on Oak Island, and we spoke to owner Doug Ausbury about the joys of records and how he came to share that joy in his new shop.
How long has Big Love Vinyl been in business? You did online only sales first, right?
I found a silver lining during the craziness of 2020, when I reignited my passion for music and especially vinyl. I spent a lot of that time becoming the new caretaker of many, many records. Toward the end of the year, I realized I had to answer the question “What am I going to do with all these records?”
The answer was threefold. First, I became a collector again so I started what has become a large personal collection of music that I absolutely love. Second, I donated and gave many of the duplicates away. And lastly, I did what came natural to me based on my profession…I built a website to start selling records online. All of the businesses I’ve started have names that come from songs … and I called this one Big Love Vinyl. I bought the domain name (biglovevinyl. com) on December 1, 2020, and the website was up and running a month later. Our first online sale was on February 8, 2021. I remember it well because it was one of my favorite records by a wonderful band called Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark. That was just over two years ago and since then the website has seen about 1,000 orders and about 4,100 records have made their way to new vinyl-loving caretakers. This makes me smile.
Along with the website, I also have the privilege of curating records for a small online group of Big Love VIPs, and I offer many records to our Facebook followers first before they go in the store or on the website. It’s been fun to figure out how to do the record business my own way. And there aren’t many things that make me happier than helping a customer find that perfect record.
What influenced your decision to launch an in-person shop?
I love this question because I have to go back 40 years to answer it.
My 11th grade English composition teacher assigned an essay about what we wanted to do when we grew up. During those high school days, I was completely entrenched in music. I had also found my entrepreneurial spark and built a large vinyl collection utilizing some pretty unconventional tactics. I tell this story in more detail in my video interviews on my website’s About page. So it makes complete sense that my English paper was about someday owning a record store. I totally forgot I wrote that paper but recently discovered it in a box of keepsakes.
After college, my career path took me into health care management and eventually to starting and growing a few successful small businesses in the online marketing world. At age 57, now I get to check the record store owner box too. That reminds me, I need to put that essay in the shop!
How does being in the Crossroads Gathering Place help?
How the Oak Island store inside Crossroads Gathering Place came about is simply a God thing. I met Mike Jones in my men’s small group and while getting to know him,

I learned about Crossroads. We started talking about a Big Love Vinyl store inside Crossroads last year and I’m blessed to be one of the first vendors.
There are some very cool vendors inside Crossroads, plus Victory Coffee + Craft so it’s really a great place for Big Love Vinyl. You can actually drink a beer or coffee while flipping through records…how cool is that?!
I think a lot of folks are surprised to find a record store there and it’s a walk down memory lane for many. We’re also seeing a lot of young folks drawn to the store as the recent vinyl revival has spread outside those that grew up with it to their kids and grandkids. We have records for all ages in the shop.
What drew you to selling vinyl records?
Serious record collectors know that it can be an expensive hobby. So what initially drew me to selling online (and now at the shop in Oak Island) is a way to support growing my personal vinyl collection -- which has reached about 4,000 records. Now, I’ve become a lot choosier about what I keep for myself and that’s good for my customers because I’m passing most of them along to them.
Beyond supporting my own collecting habits, I also was drawn to the challenge of selling something in an extremely competitive market. I got pretty deep into the Facebook vinyl community and I analyzed what a lot of other sellers were doing. Almost all were selling via livestreams, where people had to attend the online sale or auction, primarily on Facebook. So if you did a livestream once or twice a week, you’re really only selling during those few hours each week. I went the other direction by making Big Love’s website the main focus and utilizing social media as a tool to support and drive customers to a website that’s open (and selling) 24/7.
And now we have our physical store in Oak Island, open Mon-Thu 9 am to 8 pm, Fri-Sat 9 am to 9 pm and 11 am to 4 pm on Sunday.
Who is your typical customer, if there is one?
As you’d expect, a lot of customers are around my age, people who grew up with records and have stuck with vinyl for the long haul or have come back to it during the recent vinyl revival. Big Love’s selection is strong with bands from the mid ‘60s through the late 80s, which was really vinyl’s heyday.
We’re also starting to see more of the
younger generation who didn’t grow up with vinyl starting to come around -- especially as many current artists are having their records pressed and released. I read somewhere that of the 43.5 million LPs sold last year, one in 25 albums bought were by pop megastar Taylor Swift!
Do you buy records that our readers may have lying around? How does that work? How does one know what a record is worth?
We are always looking for record collections to buy, whether it’s a handful or a room full. We mostly look for rock, pop, country and jazz records from the ‘60s through the ‘90s. Give us a call and we’ll arrange a time to view the records and make a fair offer for them. And if we can’t use a record, every week we donate records to local nonprofits like Friends Of The Library Southport & Oak Island.
We use pricing tools like Discogs and Popsike to determine the exact pressing of records. I encourage people to read about using the deadwax data (a code stamped on the area of the record between the last song and the label) on each record if they really want to investigate the value of their records. Many people only use ebay; that can be a mistake because of the many sellers that are gouging and overpricing their records. Also, condition is very important when trying to determine the worth of a record.
Suppose someone looks at all their old records and wants to keep them. Can you help with a record player?
Absolutely. We have some starter turntables in the shop and will be adding a few vintage turntables in the near future.
What is the appeal of vinyl records?
I’m not one of those people who refuse to listen to their favorite song (ELO’s Mr. Blue Sky) on something other than vinyl. I enjoy listening to cassettes, CDs and digital media. That said, I do prefer the warm analog sound of music on vinyl through a two-channel receiver and some great speakers. I think that’s the biggest appeal of vinyl…it’s the way vinyl sounds on great equipment.
Another appeal is the physical part of holding an album in your hands, and of course the artwork, packaging, pictures and liner notes. The physical record product gave artists another big way to express their art and creation. We lost most of that with the cassette and CD and all of it with digital media.
And lastly of course is the nostalgia part of vinyl records. If you grew up in the 60s, 70s or early 80s, records were likely a big part of your life, and there are so many memories tied to the music. The records bring that nostalgia wave back in a big way….big love!

Cape Fear Chorale
Brunswick County Residents Enjoy Song
STORY BY LISA STITES
Whetherit’s music students performing at a school concert, bands rocking it out for a crowd, or volunteer musicians playing and singing with local bands and choirs, one thing is clear — we love our music scene in southeastern North Carolina. Several Bruns wick County residents take that love of music across the river to sing and perform with the Cape Fear Chorale, a vocal ensemble of between 60 and 80 singers. The group is in its 25th year and per forms two concerts a year.
The Chorale is “committed to building and enriching our community through exceptional choral artistry and by creating meaningful, educational, and inclusive musical experiences,” according to the group’s website, https://capefearchorale.org/.
The Chorale’s next performance is May 19, called “Broadway Through the Ages.” The evening serves as a fundraiser, with sweets to sample, a silent auction and a raffle, and of course, plenty of show tunes.
So who are some of these singers who make the quick trek from Leland or drive a bit farther from Southport and St. James just to sing in the Chorale?
From the North Brunswick County/Leland area
•Jennifer Lewis moved to Leland from Michigan 13 years ago, and has been singing with the Chorale for 13 seasons. She studied voice in school and privately,
and though she has never worked full time as a singer, she has enjoyed side jobs as a soloist for wedding and funerals. The soprano started singing in a church choir at age 4, and said she has sung in every place she has lived, including Canada, Germany, and Belgium. “I enjoy singing all types of music from Classical, Gospel and Opera to Secular, Popular Music and Show tunes,” Jennifer said. “My favorite type is whatever I
voice. It makes me feel good.” He also said a recent concert featured songs in English, German, French and Russian, and noted that he never before considered music to be a course in languages.
•Alicia Powell lives in the Mallory Creek community, and says according to her Mom, she has been singing since she was 2 years old. She sings with the Altos, and this is her first full year with the Cho-
Celebrating Ten Years of Serving Our Community www.SouthportMag.com / Community
for three years, and she auditioned for the Chorale as soon as she could after seeing the group perform. She’s been singing since she was a small child, and can also accompany herself on piano. “I was impressed by the cohesiveness of the group, the caliber of the voices and music, and the direction,” she said. “It was impossible to resist such a group! These qualities are paramount to me and I have great respect for the musicianship of my fellow members, and am proud to call myself a peer.”
From the Southport/St. James area
•Southport resident Caren Laiosa has been singing her whole life with her musical family and has been singing with various groups for more than 30 years. The soprano joined the Chorale three years ago, saying she was impressed with the quality of the sound of the Chorale, the high standards for singers and the director’s style and ability.
•Diane Lusk lives in St. James, and has been singing with groups since first joining a school chorus. She plays and has taught piano, sings Alto with the Chorale, and also sings in two a cappella groups in Southport — the Cape Fear A’cappella Singers and a women’s quartet called The
TrebleMakers.
Learning more about these dedicated singers made one thing absolutely clear. They have been singing for decades and music has always been a part of their lives. Their reasons for singing may vary as much as the music they perform, but they all enjoy gathering with like-minded musicians to
make beautiful music together.
“It is a group of about 70 wonderful voices who come together weekly with one purpose….to make gorgeous music together and ready it for performance,” Diane said. “Another reason I love singing with this Chorale is the sense of collaboration with wonderful people and wonderful musicians. This sense has lead to a group that loves to
be together and are now good friends in our common interest,” she added.
“There are many reasons I enjoy singing with the Chorale including the friendships I have made over the years but the most rewarding thing about singing with the Chorale definitely has to be the feeling of accomplishment when we have perfected the musical repertoire,” Jennifer said. “The enjoyment that we give to others through our gift of music to all the audiences who have come to our free concerts over the years is just the icing on the cake!”
And for Alicia, the chance to harmonize with neighbors is very rewarding, especially after the hiatus due to the pandemic. “I absolutely love singing. It’s one of my favorite things to do. It makes me feel relaxed and at home. The right chord gives me chills!”
It also seems that singers have their favorite types of music to sing, but that they enjoy learning new music in all genres.
“I truly love harmonies across all genres of music,” Caren said. “There is nothing like hearing a perfect chord. I love singing old jazz standards and, of course, choral music.”

Musician Directory
Celebrating Our Vibrant Music Scene
PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED
Live music is everywhere in our community. You can find a variety of live music in our bars and restuarnts evey night og the week. Southport and OAk Island both host free outdoor concert series in the summer and fall. Almost every event will have a live music component. We love our guitars and drums and passionate vocals. With so many choices, it can be difficult to pick who you’d like to see, or who you’d like to bring to a venue you manage. We’re here to help! We reached out to the local music community and asked our musicians to tell us a bit about themselves. The response was amazing and we hope this little directory (listed in the order we recieved the information) helps connect audiences with the music they love.
CMB (THE CHRISTINE MARTINEZ BAND)
An extremely tight five-piece band with Christine fronting. As a past on-air radio personality for many years, Christine is a great show personality! We play throughout the local region from Surf City (Trailer Bar) to North Myrtle Beach (Capt. Archie’s, Marina Bar); including a weeklong stint on the Deck of the House of Blues, to Wilmington (Rusty Nail, Seven Mile Post) to Southport’s premiere music venue (American Fish Company), as well as numerous festivals (Belville BBQ, Oak Island Summer Concert series, Hurricane Relief Concert, Southport’s Summer Concert series). The band has been playing together for eight years. Our genre would be considered Classic Rock/Americana. We play songs by Fleetwood Mac, Grace Potter, Jackson Browne, Alabama Shakes, Tom Petty, Miranda Lambert, Joe Cocker, Amy Winehouse, Chris Stapleton, Shania Twain and many more. The band consists of electric guitar, acoustic guitar, keyboard, bass and drums; plus we all sing.
Rev and the Flying Flamingos entertain the Cape Fear area with an eclectic mix of pop, R&B, blues, and jazz. We perform music from Neil Young, Stevie Wonder, Billie Joel, Elton John, Neil Diamond, John Cougar Mellencamp, Tears for Fears, Eurythmics, and more. Look for us at your favorite venues such as American Fish Company, the Mullet, the Wine Rack, and many others. We are also available for festivals and private parties as a duo or trio.

DOUBLE-CHERRY PIE
We play a vast variety of music genres with something for most musical tastes. DCP has been together since 2016. We have 60+ years of music and performance experience. We moved to Southport last year and we love it here! Currently, we enjoy regular performances at Mac’s Speed Shop, weekly on Bald Head Island, The Shuckin Shack Downtown, The Cameron Art Museum, Glass Bottom Bar, Pub of Southport, 7 Mile Post, Second Wind, Bourbon Street, Mad Katz, American Fish Co., and River Hotel Southport. Double Cherry Pie is well liked wherever we perform. We are adding additional venues every week! DCP has a vast playlist. We play the songs people want to hear and we are more than musicians — we are entertainers. We never write a set list beforehand. DCP has a playlist of more
than 200+ tunes and we play songs that cater to the crowd at hand. It’s not about us, it’s about them! And it’s about YOU. If you don’t make money booking us then we shouldn’t be playing for you. Our primary focus is as follows… if you don’t make money, we won’t be asked back.
DCP is gathering new followers every single time that we play. Plus we will keep your current customers happy and enjoying themselves, keeping them around longer. That translates to larger guest checks...increasing your bottom line! We would love an opportunity to play for you and your customers. We have the ability to play “small,” meaning our footprint and sound volume fits smaller venues, or we can go “BIG” for larger venues and audiences.
Visit us out on Facebook as Double Cherry Pie or at 717-805-7670 Will provide local references upon request.

MOXIE AND FLO
Moxie and Flo play all over, from Surf City down to Southport. Our style is true to the original versions of your most favorite hits from the past 40 years. We aren’t scared to tackle the big stuff and present a pretty darn good version for just a couple of chicks. Stevie Nicks and Linda Ronstadt are expected but we kill Bob Seager and the Allman Brothers too.
Jo is Moxie and me? I’m Andrea and I am Flo. I like pulling a few weirder more obscure songs out like Al Stewart’s Year of the Cat or a softer side of Led Zepplin and Jo is likely to break into Bon Jovi or Brian Adams although I am always super reluctant to sing that stuff. Because of our differences we present a cool package. Just like our name, rough and tumble Moxie and with a thick coat of Flo.

GARRET WHEELER
Garret Wheeler was born in North Carolina and has had a strong affinity for music since an early age. Growing up in a musical household, Garret quickly took to music and began experimenting with various instruments until finally discovering the bass guitar at the age of 14. Over the next few years, he began playing with several different bands, leading to the creation of The Cliff Wheeler Band, which is led by his father. As the band began playing regularly, Garret essentially became the opening act, beginning each show with a set of solo acoustic performances. These performances included songs by artists such as The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Led Zeppelin, as well as Garret’s own original songs. Impressment Laws
Brunswick Civil War Round Table Meets
Wilmington’s
and North Carolina’s unique participation involving slavery will be the focus of the 13th anniversary meeting of the Brunswick Civil War Round Table on Tuesday, May 2. The presentation is entitled, “Raising Corn, Embankments, and a Little Hell: Impressed Labor and the Wilmington Fortifications.” The guest speaker is Jaime Amanda Martinez, Professor and Chair in the Department of History at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Everyone is welcome. This will be the last monthly meeting before the summer break, so please join us. Registration begins at 6:15 and the program starts at 7 pm. The visitor fee is $10 and can be applied toward the $25 annual membership dues.
The presentation begins with an overview of impressment laws enacted in North Carolina in the summer of 1862, lasting throughout the war. Impressment was the legislated policy of the Confederate government to seize food, fuel, slaves, and other commodities to meet the needs of the Confederate army. Slave impressment was officially enacted in the March 1863 Impressment Act, which allowed the government to force slave holders to surrender control of their slave populations in order to defend the Confederate states. Despite protests from slave
owners, slave impressment proved critical in allowing the Confederate government to shore up fortifications and keep the war machine churning out arms and ammunition until the end of the war.
The summer of 1864 became a key point in time when North Carolina Governor Zebulon Vance was running for
re-election. At question was his level of support for the war effort. This involved the Confederate government centralizing slave impressment, and Vance’s concern for the fate of enslaved men impressed to work at Wilmington, while the grain planters needed their labor at home. As a result, American Indian men were impressed as laborers, leading to armed conflict between Lumbee men and the North Carolina Home Guard in Robeson County by the end of the war.
Martinez arrived at UNCP in 2008 shortly after completing her Ph.D. at
the University of Virginia. Her first book is entitled “Confederate Slave Impressment in the Upper South.” She is a frequent speaker at Fort Fisher events to talk about the role of enslaved, free black, and American Indian men in building the Wilmington fortifications, and she is a member of the North Carolina Historical Highway Marker Advisory Committee.
For more information about the meeting, becoming a member, or volunteering for this non-profit organization of 1,000+ members, please contact president John Butler at Brunswickcwrt@gmail.com, or call him at 404-229-9425. A Stand-Up Musician
Southport’s Favorite Bassist Ellen Dorsett
STORY BY CARLA EDSTROM
Upright bass, bass violin, double bass, standup bass, contrabass, bass fiddle...it may be called many different names, but it’s all the same instrument. The bass is a traditional orchestra’s largest and lowest-pitched string instrument, with the only exception being the octobass which is the size of a tiny house and very rare. The bass is usually played with a bow or plucked with the fingers depending on the type of music played. You are correct if you think that men are the predominant players of the bass. But many women have also mastered playing bass and hauling it around orchestra pits and theaters. One such woman is local bassist Ellen Dorsett. It was 63 years ago, when, as a sophomore in high school, Ellen started playing the upright double bass in Greensboro, NC.
“In Junior High, I was a majorette with the marching band and wanted to continue that in high school, but they had a rule that you had to play an instrument in the band in order to be a majorette,” she said. “Since I had been playing violin from age 10 and piano from age 8, I picked up the bass in the Concert Band, which qualified me to be a majorette. I fell in love with the bass but continued to play violin
in the orchestra.”
Having the opportunity to study music in Greensboro, where they have a lot of support from the colleges nearby and excellent music programs in the school system, was a blessing to Ellen. “That afforded me opportunities for additional studies and to play violin with the Greensboro Orchestra, now Symphony,” she said. “After high school, I attended Converse College in Spartanburg, SC, where I first played violin and then bass. The music program there was one of the best and again afforded me the opportunity to play with the Chamber Orchestra and accompany the Opera Workshop. I didn’t finish school as I got married and moved to Southport. But I did get to play a Stradivarius violin while there.”
Growing up in a musical family, Ellen was surrounded by music from a young age. “My Dad was a major inspiration. He had an ‘Orchestra’ in the late 30s and early 40s, in the days of Big Bands. He could play most of the band instruments. His sister had her own ‘Orchestra’ and played violin and piano. Mom played piano and made sure we had musical opportunities to explore. The violin I played until a couple of years ago and still have was my great grandfather’s.”
With Ellen’s many years of experience
playing, she offers excellent advice to all beginning bass players. She encourages all players to practice and learn everything they can about their instrument to be complete players. “While being able to ‘play along’ is a great talent, it will take you only so far, but still learn to do it. Learn to read music, play with a bow, music theory…etc. Play electric bass. Play all genres of music. Do all of this, and you’ll be ‘the real deal’,” she said.
Playing in bands and attending festivals and music workshops is a fantastic way to learn new skills and meet others with the same musical enthusiasm. “One of the highlights of my year is attending the NC Jazz Festival in Wilmington every year for 40 years. As a patron, you can sit in and play a couple of tunes with the pros at a Saturday brunch. Therefore, I have had the pleasure of playing with some of the best musicians in the world…and I mean the world. Also, I get to play some fantastic

basses as the bass players are generous and let me do so.”
And meeting those famous bass players creates lifetime memories and great stories. “One year, when bass player Milt Hinton was at the Jazz Festival, I told him I had a couple of measures of ‘slap bass’ coming up in a concert and could he give me any tips. So, he took me out in the hall and gave me a personal ‘slap bass’ lesson. He is the best ‘slap bass’ player I have ever heard, and also a wonderful gentleman and photographer. He let me play his bass in the jam session. As I took hold of the bass, it said, ‘Tell me what we’re playing.’ I told it, and it said, ‘OK, I’ve got you.’ It literally played itself,” she said. “Another time, I had played in the pro-am jam and was talking with bass player Bobby Haggart. He commented that the chart I had played was pretty boring, and he asked if he could write me another one. So, of course, I said yes, if he would sign it. So, he did, and I still have it and play it at every gig we do — “Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans.”
Ellen currently plays her bass in many groups around southeastern North Car-
olina. “Other groups I play with are numerous, including Wyckoff Orchestra at Trinity United Methodist Church, River Rascals Dixieland Band, Le Groupe Du Jour, pit bands, accompanying small and large groups, anywhere a double bass is needed,” she said. “The Brunswick Concert Band was formed in 1987. Many of us had been playing for years as pit bands for pageants, Sea Notes Choral Society, and little theater events being pulled together by the late Dr. C. Richard Conrad. We were having so much fun that we formed the Concert Band. Several years later, approximately in 2005, the Big Band came together. I was a charter member of both and still playing with both. There is only one string bass in each band. Occasionally an electric bass will join us when it is called for in the music.”
You can see Ellen perform with theBrunswick Concert Band at the group’s spring concert, ‘Out Of This World,’ on May 6, at 3 pm at Hatch Auditorium, Fort Caswell and May 7, 3 pm at Odell Williamson Auditorium, Brunswick Community College. http://www.brunswickbands.org/
