ou may not at first think of the Price’s Creek Lighthouse that graces this month’s cover as particiularly seasonal, but hear me out. We captured the cover photo on a recent trip on the Southport-Fort Fisher Ferry. It was a beautiful, sunny, warmbut-not-hot day with a nice little breeze. As I stood by the rail watching the lighthouse go by and looking at all the boats out cruising and fishing, it struck me just how blessed we are to call this place home.

his photo represents Thanksgiving to us, and so does this issue. November is our Shop Local/Shop Small Issue and contains our annual Holiday Gift Guide. Putting it together reminded me once again how thankful I am personally for all the businesses in our community that have weathered 2020 no matter what has been thrown their way. We’re particularly thankful for our advertisers who have stuck with us through all of this. We quite literally couldn’t do any of this without them. So take advantage of all the shop localspecials this month, you’ll be doing a world of good for some very deserving folks.

CURRENTS Trial By Fire Weathering 2020 As A New Business Owner Takes A Special Kind Of Person STORY AND PHOTO BY JEFFREY STITES

S

tarting out as an entrepreneur is always a little scary and nerve-wracking, but buying a business and then having 2020 happen is a special kind of challenge. Sylvia Liedtke-Ognan purchased the gift shop that is now The Pearl in Southport’s downtown one year ago, and despite the challenges, she is till here, still growing, and still going strong. We spoke to Sylvia about her challenges and what it’s been like to begin down the road of small business ownership during these extraordinary times. You’ve just celebrated one year in business. First off, congratulations! What a year. Tell us a little bit about The Pearl, what you offer and what sets you apart. As our first Anniversary is quickly approaching on Nov. 1, I believe what sets us apart from everyone else is the fact that we host special events throughout the year which gives us an opportunity to say “Thank you” to all of our customers for supporting our local, small business. It also gives us an opportunity to interact with customers live in person and for them to interact with us as well. It gives me a chance to get to know them more personally and to share experiences of what we’ve all been facing this past year since COVID has hit. It makes it

more personal, offering a one-on-one experience. We have many opportunities for our customers to save money, offering a few incentives that I believe not everyone has to offer: - 4 percent discount off everything when paying with cash - Loyalty program - spend $300 throughout the year and get a $25 give-back - Continuous savings monthly with sales or specials such as BOGOs - Support of local artists in the store and social media promotion - More MADE IN USA items and many that are produced by women-owned businesses as well

Can you speak to where you come from professionally and what made you want to open The Pearl?

4 Southport Magazine /November /November 2020 / www.SouthportMag.com

I have a Masters Degree in Education as well as a degree in Accounting. I had worked in New York as an office manager for 13 years and as a substitute teacher for 10 years. My dream has always been to run a business of my own, being able to be as creative as possible and purchase what I like and what I think my clientele would enjoy. With the background to interact well with people, whether in front of a classroom with students or with homeowners, I wanted to take a leap of faith, a chance, a dramatic change in my life, by taking over the business where I had worked for 18 months (prior to the previous owners’ retiring) and making it my own.

What did you bring to this venture that helped you weather the challenges of 2020? I brought hard work, dedication, and the commitment to never quit, to be creative and crafty. I’ve improved upon the business by investing in a new POS system, allowing me to upload every item into a system that helps me with future sales forecasts. I’ve had the opportunity to get to know many more local shop owners and see what has worked for them and what hasn’t. I was able to make the improvements necessary during the time we were closed for eight weeks. With the help of my

husband and mother, we gave the store a big facelift, inside and out. There were so many things that I needed to learn, but I accepted the challenge with open arms. Sometimes I wanted to scream because I found something I wished someone would have told me about, but ultimately it was my choice and I learned and made my way through it. You never realize what an important tool social media is until you own your own business in the 20th century and we are faced with a pandemic.

What have you learned over the past year that will help you moving forward?

Communication. Constantly updating on social media, advertising, giving back to and supporting the community, listening to what our clientele are looking for and what we can do to improve their

CURRENTS shopping experiences. Have a sympathetic ear...

Can you speak to the support of the community this year and the importance of shopping local?

It is quite a wonderful experience to be part of this very supportive local community which truly comes together during difficult times. There were so many people, remarkably, who purchased gift certificates while we were shut down to be used later on. There were phone calls, emails and messages from many customers that gave their words of encouragement and continual prayers. Lastly, many people made purchases and took advantage of our free delivery to local areas.

What role has the local small business community played in helping each other through this year? Do you collaborate, share ideas, commiserate?

Gift Sets Make Perfect Holiday Gifts

There were several stores with which I would collaborate to gain insight into what was working for them and how I could tweak the ideas to work for me and my store. We listened to each other and shared our hardships. We would try to come up with creative ways to reach the community to make them feel that we are all in it together. LThe more supportive we were with one another, the better we felt about the future. This was a year full of challenges and unpredictability, always wondering which direction to go. Ultimately it was what I and my family thought was the best that was the right decision for us.

In a year full of things none of us expected, what has surprised you most, good or bad? There have been many surprises for me — that my business is still open during one of the most difficult years in my history and how hard I have worked to keep it moving forward. I couldn’t have come as far as I have without the support of my husband, Richard, and my mom, Ursula. Many sacrifices were made during this time, especially not being able to see any of my kids who live in the upstate New York, the Catskills, nor having them visit us during this pandemic. One of the worst aspects is not being able to make up for the money lost during those two months we had to remain closed. However, I appreciate the support I’ve received from many of the patrons who have made purchases, given me many words of wisdom (and their opinions, lol) and how many new friendships have been built with other local shop owners in town.

Bringing The Bling

Renee Ward Creates Spakling Treasures STORY AND PHOTOS BY LISA.P STITES

T

his month we chatted with Renee Ward of Renee’s Fine Jewelry (at 602 N. Howe Street in Southport). Renee has spent her lifetime in the jewelry business, and we wanted to know more about how she makes her business shine and sparkle.

You’ve been in business since 1976 — so, you literally grew up in the jewelry business? Yes, we’ve been in business since 1976. I was actually six years old when I started working in the store, doing anything from watch batteries, to taking apart watches, playing with clocks and doing small, minor jewelry repair, cleaning jewelry and doing all the different things you do in a jewelry store.

With a lifetime of experience yourself, do you also draw from your family’s experience? Most people that have jewelry stores, especially the full service jewelry stores, it’s typically family. Not very many people just start up a jewelry store, because it’s very hard to do and there are so many facets in a jewelry store and learning all the aspects of appraisals, repairs, design work, special ordering…I’ve been doing it for 40 years and I am still learning to this day. I’ve done it my whole life, I managed the Reed’s stores when I was in Raleigh in my 20s. I stayed there for just over three years, came back and worked in the jewelry store with with my family for the next year and a half, and then I was blessed to stay at home for five years to be with my children. And then what did I do but come back to what I do. If it works, and you love it…

Your customers can find fine jewelry as well as more casual, coastalthemed jewelry -how do you strike that balance and offer something for everyone?

I think being a female jeweler makes a big difference in the jewelry field and in knowing what women

want. I know a lot of my male counterpart jeweler friends, they struggle with trying to figure that part out. They have to depend on some of their employees to figure out what women like. Being in the business for as long as I have I, it’s just very easy to be able to know what sells, to know what women like, know what they find attractive, and of course, I’m very good at price-pointing pieces too. I don’t carry

things that are too expensive. I want everyone to have a very good value, and also a wide range of things. Sometimes I am trying new lines, sometimes I am doing this and that and I go to a lot of different shows, probably six international jewelry shoes a year, so I am finding new pieces. With being in business for so long, and being female, I do like to experiment with new lines and I do

CURRENTS find a lot of one-of-a-kind pieces as well. I think that separates me from most other jewelry stores, because 50 percent of the jewelry I have in here is one-of-a-kind and I can’t get back in again — once it’s sold, it’s gone. It’s just the luck of the draw, who gets it first. Probably the other 50 percent, I can reorder. I basically hand pick all these pieces out at very good prices, or we make them.

Can you tell us more about your design services? How do you work with clients to bring their vision to reality?

I think I give a lot of very individual design to my customers. I have done thousands and thousands of different designs, of any caliber, anything from simple to the most intricate and unique details you can imagine in a piece of jewelry. I sit down

with the customer, I listen to the customer. It’s very important to listen to what they want because I don’t believe in trying to talk them into something that is not their vision. We go through books, we go through different things for inspiration, and then I write everything down and get all the information that I need. And then it’s a process, but I am very in tune to talking to the customer and giving them set-by-step what is going on and what we need to to. Then, after we get the price down, the style down, and everything else, then I do a three-dimensional CAD design, because that is basically a failsafe method. I can’t tell you how many designs I have had to redo for customers because the customer hated the design that another jeweler did, whether it was someone out of town or out of state, and then they come to me because they’ve heard about the way we do business. Once they see the CAD design, they can see it from every single angle, and that’s when we actually do it. I don’t like surprises. I like customers to know exactly what they’re getting. Out of all the designs we have done, and we do an awful lot of them, every single customer says it is so much more beautiful than they ever expected, even when they saw the CAD. We do some semi-custom as

The beautiful thing about it is that when you walk in here, you see so many different designs, and it’s affordable. That’s the best part. I try to keep my prices very low. We have a lot of fabulous, gorgeous, expensive pieces, we have a a lot of mid-price pieces, we have a lot of lower to mid-price pieces, and then a lot of nautical pieces, pearls, beautiful colored jewelry, everyday jewelry. I like to have a lot of variety. I don’t like to look like everybody else.

well. I take the stones, and I have access to hundreds of thousands of different mountings, earrings, rings, bracelets, all kinds of things, and then we put it together for them. There are so many different options for people. It just depends on if somebody wants that one-of-a-kind piece. We can make it simplistic or as intricate as needed. If someone comes in with a unique ring, like a wedding ring, and they want a designed ring for the other side but it’s no longer made, then we can can make an exact match. Literally, if you think it, we can do it. It’s just a fun thing for me to do. I love design work.

What’s your favorite gemstone, and why? What is your go-to piece of jewelry that you find yourself wearing most often, or do you change it up a lot?

I like blue. It’s my favorite color and it sells really well around here, so in here you’ll see all types and shapes and colors of blue gemstones. Probably my favorite is sapphire or the beautiful Swiss Blue Topaz. I just love both of those colored stones. I think they go well with most skin coloring. And of course diamonds - you can’t go wrong with diamonds. I do like to change it up. Today I am wearing sapphires and a beautiful aquamarine. Sometimes I just sell a bracelet right off my wrist because someone will say it looks beautiful, be-

cause it always looks so much more beautiful on than it is in the case. It’s a lot of work, a lot of responsibility, and it’s a lot of fun. I consider it a happy business. You’re making somebody happy. When it comes to the design work, you’re taking something that is so special to someone and you’re creating something that they can wear every day. Those kind of things mean a lot to me. I love doing surprise engagements, because I feel like part of their story. I love jewelry and I love people and I am very honest. That has got me through the past umpteen years in the business. I am very thankful for people to see me and know they can trust me.

Is there anything else you’d like us all to know?

We are here and we’re taking everything day-to-day. We’re working more on our social media and getting our website up and running, but we are still here five days a week for you. We do deliveries, we send pictures to people, I have people who message me, email, text. We give a level of service that you really don’t find much anymore. We’re way different and way better than anything that you could find online, and we’re priced better too.

How have your been dealing with the pandemic - we imagine people have still wanted to have shiny new things, and special occasions don’t stop for a pandemic.

Everybody is learning as we go. This year has been very challenging for everyone, to say the least. As far as the masks, the social distancing, being closed for six weeks - that was a very big challenge as well. Once we got open, it was game on. We did great, we did wonderful all the way up until the hurricane hit. I’m from Southport, so this is my home, and historically, anytime we have a hurricane, it takes about a month for everybody to kind of recover, recoup and get over the mental anguish and then we start to get back on track again. And it’s an election year, which has been stressing everybody out, and then the pandemic on top of it. It’s been challenging, and because of everything that we do, which is appraisals, jewelry and watch repair, diamonds, even a lot of free advice, special ordering, we have still been busy because we’ve been in the area so long. People just know me. Sometimes they don’t even know my name, they just know me as the jewelry lady. Which, that’s not a bad thing to be known for. Retail therapy - there’s nothing like it.

Eclectic Shop Offers Something For All

Dunes Mercantile On Oak Island Features Budget-friendly Handicrafts and More STORY BY JEFFREY STITES, PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED

D

unes Mercantile is treasure trove of goodies. Just when you think you’ve found the coolest little item, something else catches your eye. And then you reach the back of the store and find a collection of musical instruments and gear, from mandolins to guitars to amplifiers, and you realize you have found a truly unique shop. We spoke to Dennis Delprete about his business and how he’s navigated the challenges of 2020.

How long have you been in business??

Dunes Mercantile was opened in May of 2018. I rented a small space in the store at that time and then purchased the store in April of 2019.

Where did you come to Oak Island from and what brought you here?

I’m originally from Pittsburgh, PA and then lived fourteen years in South Florida. After working in advertising for the

Pittsburgh Post Gazette, Miami Herald and with my own advertising magazines, I retired in 2016. My wife’s sister had just moved to Southport from Wilmington, so we settled in Southport. We knew very little about Oak Island but soon fell in love with all the island has to offer.

Dunes Mercantile is a pretty unique store. Can you explain explain it for anyone who hasn’t had a chance to visit yet?

Our slogan is “It’s always an adventure at Dunes” and we’d like everyone who comes into the store to enjoy their own adventure. We love the local artist aspect and represent over 30 artists from potters to painters, wood craftsmen, jewelry makers and of course stained glass, which I do. The store is an eclectic mix of new product, some unique vintage product and work from the local artists. In addition, we carry all types of beach decor, ladies apparel, shabby chic furniture, metal artwork, copper weather vanes and so much more! And to everyone’s surprise, we have ventured into musical instruments with a heavy emphasis on guitars. I like to refer to the back of the store as a “guitar bar,” with prices ranging from beginner through accomplished musician.

What sets you apart from other stores with handicrafts?

We try to pick and choose what artwork we feel our customers will like. Price point is very important to us and we make an effort to keep our prices very affordable. We refer to it as “starving artists” prices! Most of our artists are available for commissioned work through the store. I perSouthport Magazine 2016-2017 SOI Chamber Small Business of the Year Winner

sonally have done many custom stained glass pieces for people and business on the island and also visitors.

How do you appeal to both locals and visitors?

The atmosphere on Oak Island is so laid back that it’s easy to enjoy everyone who comes into the store. Those on vacation are thrilled to be here and love to take home a piece of the island with them. Locals that have just moved here or those redecorating can always find unique beach décor in all shapes and sizes. Our approach is to have something for everyone in all price ranges.

This year has brought challenges to all our local businesses. Waht have you learned in overcoming these challenges that will help you oving forward? \ As “it’s always an adventure at Dunes,” life is an adventure! A year to the day when I purchased the store, we were shut down for almost six weeks due to COVID-19. I had several stained glass projects that I didn’t think I’d finish until the fall and got caught up on all of those, much to the delight of the recipients! Since purchasing the store the year before and being the drummer for the local band, Dave’s Not Home, I hadn’t had much time to reflect or slow down. The time off reminded me that it’s important to do what you love. I feel we reinvent ourselves throughout our lifetime to

CURRENTS maintain our existence. My wife’s job was put on hold due to the virus, and she became more involved in the store purchasing. Her diligence in researching new lines and ability to find great products has helped the store move in a forward direction. I feel we have all learned how to adapt to new circumstances and are stronger than we thought. After all, the sun comes up, the tide comes in and we are renewed again. Life’s a Beach!

Can you speak to the support you’ve experienced from the community, your customers and this year’s visitors? We wouldn’t be here without the support of the local community and visitors. The locals are all about shopping local and giving back to this beautiful place we call home. I feel we are all lucky to live here

and part of that charm is the local businesses. Our customers have told friends and family and often bring in visitors to the store. Visitors to Oak Island come here because of the small-town atmosphere, beauty of the beach and lovely surroundings. They understand their support is important and are happy to take some time from the sun and shop in all the locally owned businesses.

What are your plans for the future of Dunes Mercantile?

We’ve evolved so much in the last year that the future is definitely going to be an adventure! The shopping center has recently been purchased and there are plans for a face lift and new signage. We are bringing in a custom tee shirt, sweatshirt and jacket line under our private label that will be here for the holidays. My wife has recently added Bend Goat Soap products, Wind & Willow and Swan Creek Candles. I often refer to us as Bed, Bath and Guitars! We are also big on giving back to local charities. Fighting For Veterans’ Lives

CURRENTS been told by the VA that they only reach 40 percent of the veterans who need help. That means as many as 42,000 of our local troubled veterans can be dealing with their suicide ideation alone, with no professional intervention. These are the veterans Save A Vet Now is focused on.

Save A Vet Now Focuses On Suicide Prevention STORY BY JEFFREY STITES

T

hanking our nation’s veterans on Veterans Day, and all year round, is a wonderful thing. But we can do more. Veterans have often experienced stress that humans are not equipped to handle easily. All too often, this stress gets buried and leads to mental health issues, and because of the stigma our society assigns to mental health troubles, these also get buried, sometimes with tragic results. Veteran suicide is pandemic of its own, and we should recognize this, work to get our heroes the help they need, and do all we can to remove the stigma. Tony Vivaldi founded an organization called Save A Vet Now, which works to make veterans understand that it’s okay to not be okay and to connect those in need of help with free, confidential, professional counseling. We spoke to Vivaldi about the Save A Vet Now organization, how the group is helping our heroes, and how we can all join the fight.

Save A Vet Now was founded in 2019, correct? Can you speak to the growth of the organization, and especially your partnership with Coastal Horizons? How has that partnership helped you fulfill your mission? Save A Vet Now was founded in July 2019 and, since, the organization has become a member of the Governor’s Council on Veteran Suicide Prevention

and can be found in the National Resource Directory. Most important to our veterans with suicide ideation, Save A Vet Now has partnered with Coastal Horizons, a well known and highly respected service provider in the field of mental health and substance abuse. Together, we created the Veterans Outreach Program, which provides veterans in the Cape Fear Region with an opportunity to receive treatment for their suicide ideation without financial barriers at any of Coastal Horizons’ outpatient clinics in Brunswick, New Hanover, and Pender County. The Program includes funding to ensure veterans can access treatment without incurring out-of-pocket expenses. You can learn more about Save A Vet Now and Coastal Horizons on saveavetnow.org and coastal horizons.org. This partnership is different from many other suicide prevention organizations in that

Under normal circumstances, what strategies do you employ to reach vets who may have a need?

Coastal Horizons, while it has its share of counselors, employs those professionals who can treat and prescribe as necessary. This helps tremendously when trying to attract those veterans who “hide in the shadows” since help is readily available and, under HIPPA rules, it is discrete.

Is the tri-county area you serve an especially veteran heavy demographic? I cannot speak to the specific demographics for Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender Counties. What I can say is that there are more than 700,000 veterans residing in North Carolina and our tri-county area lies somewhere between the average 19 percent residing in the densest counties and the average 6% residing in the lowest populated counties. I doubt these numbers are easily extrapolated, but let’s assume the demographic for our three counties is 10 percent or 70,000. I have

The challenge is to break the silence and dispel the stigma surrounding mental health and suicide. Pre-COVID pandemic, we had a modicum of success as a result of our community awareness efforts with local businesses, organizations and clubs, public media exposure, and fundraisers. The greater challenge is to get veterans to ask for help. After speaking with many local veterans, I remain shocked at what they reveal. The most telling thing about them is that many, if not the majority, are embarrassed by their condition…so much so that some don’t even want to be seen as veterans. Afraid and distrustful, they avoid the VA or any other treatment option mostly because they want their illness to remain private. So they tough it out, hoping time will heal their wounds. I am reaching out to other organizations who have had some level of success to learn how they have bridged this gap and convinced veterans to seek help. These veterans who are “going it alone” are our focus at Save A Vet Now. A big help in reaching these veterans is, at least for now, convincing reporters, like you, to include, out of necessity, a direct outreach to the veterans we wish

How has the COVID pandemic impacted mental health in general and among veterans in particular?

As you may know, there are 20 military related deaths by suicide every single day. It is now being reported that this number is increasing by as much as 20 percent as a result of the COVID pandemic. Veteran suicide is a deadly crisis. It is silently happening all around us and we are doing little to stop it. It is resilient. Despite our best efforts, it hasn’t changed in over a decade. And it doesn’t discriminate against age, gender, race, or religion. Social interaction, a staple for suicide prevention, has been replaced by social distancing, which is no friend to suicide ideation.

What challenges has the pandemic presented to your organization and how are you overcoming them? Have you learned any valuable lessons dealing with the pandemic that will help you going forward? It is not an understatement to say the COVID pandemic has hampered us in many ways. Opportunities to improve community awareness through speeches and meetings have all but dried up. Fundraising, which helps acquire advertising and supports the Veterans Outreach Pro-

gram, is at a standstill. Where opportunities to improve community awareness do exist, I find that people are weary of the chaos this pandemic has brought and are longing for something positive. Talking about suicide surely doesn’t meet this requirement. Like so many others, Save A Vet Now is developing strategies to deal with the “new normal” that will be with us for the foreseeable future. In person speeches and fundraisers will be moved “online” through 2021. We will rely more on public media than ever before in “getting the word out.” We are actively seeking out, with some success, well-known, highly-respected, veteran-friendly organizations with a voice and a platform from which they are heard throughout the community to help us achieve our goals.

vember 2021. For now, readers can help by going to Blue Moon Gift Shops on 203 Racine Dr. in Wilmington and looking for A.M. Vivaldi Watercolors. While there, look for the Save A Vet Now tag at other vendor locations as well. Every purchase is a donation to the Veterans Outreach Program administered by Coastal Horizons.

Can you tell me about the Artwork Can Save A Vet fundraiser? How can readers participate? What are your plans for going forward? How can readers help? The Artwork Can Save A Vet fundraiser, which is intended to occur around Veterans Day, has been cancelled this year because of the COVID pandemic. We are hopeful that an event that will feature local veterans’ works of art will take place in No-

Celebrating History Proposed Gullah Geechee Greenway/ Blueway Would Connect All of Eastern Brunswick County STORY BY JEFFREY STITES

L

eland resident Brayton Willis is hoping to string together some “pearls” to create a recreational, historical and environmental treasure for eastern Brunswick County. He is working with the Brunswick County NAACP to spearhead a proposal for a Gullah-Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Multi-Use Greenway/Blueway Trail that would stretch from Navassa, through Leland and Belville and Boiling Spring Lakes, to Southport. This is a huge idea and there is a lot to unpack just in the name of the project alone. Let’s start with the Gullah Geechee. The Gullah Geechee culture is made up of African American descendants of the enslaved workers on the rice plantations that used to stretch from Pender County to Jack-

sonville, Florida. Heavily concentrated around the Sea Islands of South Carolina and Georgia, this unique culture known for some distinct linguistic and culinary traditions also has deep roots in our area of Brunswick County and the former rice plantations along the Cape Fear River.

In 2006, Congress designated a Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor to “recognize, sustain, and celebrate the important contributions made to American culture and history by African Americans, known as the Gullah Geechee…” Brunswick County sits entirely inside this corridor. Willis says he hopes to capitalize on that Congressional designation to bring some help in creating a greenway/ blue.

sional corridor has been around since ’06 but I saw no recognition of the Gullah-Geechee Corridor,” he said. “Nowhere could I find references to the Gullah-Geechee Corridor. I reached out to as many people as I could, went to Gullah-Geechee Foundation folks and didn’t get good answer. I kept digging and stumbled across Eulis Willis in Navassa. Eulis is proposing a Moze Heritage Center on an old SuperFund site.”

The idea of a multi-use greenway/ blueway trail system is to provide walking, biking and kayaking trails, in this case connecting sites of cultural and historical importance to the Gullah-Geechee culture.

The proposed Moze Gullah Geechee Heritage Site, located on the Brunswick river near the intersection of N. Navassa Road and

Willis said he was inspired by a planned East Coast Greenway that would run along the entire United States eastern seaboard when he ran into some folks working on the project in the Wilmington area. He also participated in the Wilmington metro planning Organization’s work to create a master plan for development in the Cape Fear Region. “They brought into my vision the need to have better pedestrian and bike facilities. It laid the groundwork in my mind,” he said. “This idea popped into view in February of this year,” he said. “We have some great leaders in our community that have already stepped up. This is a complement for some things that are already ongoing.” While working on the Brunswick County NAACP Environmental Justice Committee, Willis said he was struck that he didn’t ever see a mention of the federally recognized Gullah-Geechee Corridor. “The Congres-

Old Mill Road, is one of the “pearls” Willis hopes to string. It would include Gullah-Geechee museum and a nature center along with walking trails, a dock and pier and a kayak launch. The project would 40 acres of vulnerable saltmarsh habitat, according to a proposal Willis has been presenting to local governments and civic organizations. Willis also found brothers Al and George Beatty working in northern Navassa, in the Phoenix area, on a Cedar hill African American Heritage Park that would encompass a cemetery and the historic Reaves Chapel AME Church. “They (the Beatty brothers) finally got some money to do some stabilization

on it,” said Willis. “The church was built by Gullah-Geechee, formerly enslaved people who worked the rice palpations in the area.”

The Town of Leland’s upcoming Sturgeon Park sits close to the Navassa-leland border near the proposed Moze Center. South of Leland, in Belville, the Brunswick Riverwalk Park is an existing “pearl” with access to the river, a nature center and walkway, recreational facilities, and the ruins of the rice plantation that used to sit where the park and the school across the street are now. Wills found while speaking to Belville Mayor Mike Allen that the town hopes to

RENTS connect its walkway with the Battleship North Carolina at some point, proving yet another link to another “pearl.” Willis said that the next part of his string is already in the works in the form of a proposed widening project along Rt. 133starting in Belville and running more than four miles south. The proposal envisions a walking/biking path along the side of the road allowing for safe exercise and travel. “With what’s coming,” Willis said, “that leaves us 18 miles from Southport. Looking at that remaining 18 miles, that’s going to be a long term challenge. But as we build the trail we can string these pearls together. Establishing a corridor from Navassa to Southport, that’s the lowest hanging fruit to establish a trail. It’s a good place to start.” Willis points to four existing river access points that would be included in the proposed blueway. He envisions a possible three additional points. Historic sites line the river and are even providing an environmental benefit.. “These old rice fields serve as sanctuaries for fish habitat and nurseries,” he said. Willis’s hopes extend this project beyond Brunswick County. He said that Pender County has expressed interest in his proposal and that each of the three

proposals for an additional bridge over the Cape Fear River features a bike/pedestrian path. Eventually, he said, he’d like to connect to the larger east Coast Greenway. But first Willis needs to rally support. “Where we’re at…we have community support. All of this will be rolled up into an application to the National Park Service. This is important. They have a Rivers and Trails Program to offer help to develop bluesy and greenway trail segments. They’ve been working in North Carolina with a few communities,” Willis said. “I worked with them out west, in Idaho. I linked up with them again and told them about the concept. They are really excited to get the application. They want letters of support, where communities might offer up meeting space, something to show they are willing to put effort into developing the trails.” Wills has secured the support of Navassa, Belville and Leland and plans to speak with the leaders of Boiling Spring Lakes and Southport soon. Willis says heinous he has his work cut out for him. “We need to start looking at grant monies, looking at philanthropic groups, finding help to fund things. We need a website and to start a marketing campaign,” He said. “This is a big project for the Brunswick County NAACP, for any NAACP really.” He said he hopes

Flip Flopped Christmas Parade A Beloved Oak Island Tradition Survives 2020 With A Twist

T

he Christmas By The Sea Parade is on for Saturday, December 5 this year, but it’s getting some new shoes. This year the parade will be presented in a ‘flip flopped’ format with parade units staying stationery and spectators driving past them. Organizers have included some fun new elements to make this year’s parade very special for all that participate.

The Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the Town of Oak Island, have organized the Christmas By the Sea parade for more than 35 years. “The parade is a cherished holiday tradition; we just couldn’t let 2020 end without having it. With support from the Town of Oak Island, we have created a safe and fun way to hold the parade,” said Jackie Pappas, Parade co-chair for the Chamber. “Although this is something new, we hope that it brings the same excitement and fun for everyone. We want everyone to feel

they are part of the parade by either decorating a float and entering the parade at www.christmasbytheseaparade.com or gathering your family in your car or golf cart and driving through the parade. It would even be great to see residents along the parade route decorate their houses. The more holiday spirit flowing that day, the better!” The ‘Flip Flop Drive-Thru’ Christmas by the Sea Parade will be staged along E. Dolphin Drive beginning at Middleton Avenue on Oak Island. The event kicks off at 1 pm with a ribbon-cutting hosted by

none other than Santa Claus himself. Santa and the Mrs. will lead traffic down E. Dolphin past more than 75 parade units and the drive-thru route will be open to spectators until 4 pm. The parade route will be one-way on E. Dolphin Drive. Residents and visitors are encouraged to add to the festivities by decorating their vehicles, too. As always, Santa and Mrs. Claus will be the final float at the end of the parade route waving to children and the young at heart as they drive by. Normal traffic safety rules apply. Spectators (riding only) in cars, trucks or golf carts will be permitted along the parade route. COMMUNITY

A Day On The Links Sign Up Today For The Southport-Oak Island Chamber Golf Tournament STORY BY JEFFREY STITES

Registration is open for the Southport-Oak Island Area 2020 Golf Classic, teeing off on Friday, December 4 at Carolina National Golf Club. The four-person Captain’s Choice tournament will kick off with a shotgun start at 11 am. Registration is limited to 32 teams and the $340 team entry fee includes four mulligans per team and entry in the closest to the pin contest. Funds raised go to support the Southport-Oak Island Chamber of Commerce and its efforts to support our community’s businesses as they navigate a challenging year.

How else will this year’s tournament be different? This year’s tournament will feature the same Captain’s Choice/Scramble format as in previous years, but will have several changes. One fun change will be a chipping contests available to the teams where the target is a toilet. The cost will be $5 per chip or three for $10. The prizes will be a case of toilet paper and a prize to be determined. I have played in dozens of golf tournaments and have never chipped into a toilet! Each participant will receive a Moon Pie. There will also be a hole featuring the option to move up to 150 yards on a par 5 for $20 per team. We will also have a $25,000 hole-in-one challenge with $12,500 going to the player that makes the ace and $12,500 going to the Chamber. In addition, there will be cash prizes for the 1st place team in the Championship flight, 1st flight, Women’s flight, and Mixed flight provided there are a minimum of three teams in each flight. There will be no “check in” and the tournament will have a shotgun start. There will also be no Awards ceremony.

This year’s tournament will be different in a number of ways, but promises to be a great time. We spoke to event chairman Ben Frazier about the differences and what this year’s tournament has to offer.

Are you taking any special precautions due to Covid? Yes. The no check-in will prevent a large gathering of players in one place. Also, there will not be an awards ceremony after the event - prizes will be mailed to the winning teams’ captains. Social distancing will be required along with masks when in spaces with people other than your team. There will be keg beer and a box lunch available to players at the turn as well to prevent large groups in one place at a meal.

This year’s tournament is at Carolina National. What does that course offer that makes this year’s tournament special? This is our first year ever having the tournament at Carolina National. It is a magnificent 27-hole golf facility with a variety of holes - tree lined, marsh front, some extremely challenging and others that offer birdie opportunities. The practice facilities and clubhouse are top notch and provide everything a golfer could ask for in a great tournament experience.

Can you speak to how important it is to support the Chamber at this time? The Chamber Golf Tournament is essential to the fundraising efforts of the Chamber every year, but this year more so than ever. With so many of the Chamber’s events having to be cancelled or paired down due to COVID-19, this year’s tournament will provide much needed funding as well as energy and enthusiasm to remind everyone in our community of the importance of all the Chamber does in our little corner of the world.

COMMUNITY

Thankful Pumpkins STORY CONTRIBUTED BY HABITAT FOR HUMANITY Brunswick County Habitat for Humanity, along with its partner families, is challenging the community to have a heart of gratitude by sharing Thankful Pumpkins. Members of the Habitat board of Directors dropped off pumpkins and permanent markers to all Habitat Homeowners. The Homeowners ruminated on what they are thankful for and recorded their thanks by writing on their pumpkins. It’s a reminder that every day there is always something to be thankful for. “In a time where we are forced to stay apart to stay well, it’s more important than ever to stay together to stay close,” said Habitat Board President Christine Luciano. “As a faith-based organization, it is important that we emulate the values we stand behind,” said Pastor Bill Negron, Habitat Moard member. “We believe that it’s important to give thanks in all circumstances as it states in Thessalonians. These pumpkins are a tangible expression of that.” Messages are shared with the community through the Brunswick County Habitat for Humanity Facebook page. “We thank you! We will continue to add our gratitude to the pumpkin,” said one Habitat family. “This was great. Know that family and Habitat for Humanity are written on our pumpkin.” About Brunswick County Habitat for Humanity Brunswick County Habitat for Humanity (BCHFH) is a local nonprofit that brings people together to build homes, communities and hope: Our vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live. We achieve this by providing a path to home ownership for families that would not have the means to do so on their own. Habitat works side by side with partner families who have a need for housing, a willingness to partner and the ability to pay an affordable mortgage. Upon completion of each home, the partner families purchase their home through a no-interest mortgage loan. Since being founded in 1994, BCHFH has built 65 homes and completed numerous repairs in Brunswick County. BCHFH relies on the funds from donations, and the revenue from three thrift stores, called ReStores to fund its mission.

T his ocean side, ocean front property has all the features one looks for when inquiring about a beach home. Starting with the large back deck overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and the expansive beach. The property boasts a spacious and open floor plan with an expansive kitchen and dining area adjacent to the living area, which invites to entertain. All the flooring in the living area is vinyl flooring for easy maintenance. Two of the bedrooms are downstairs with a shared bath. The upstairs offers four well sized bedrooms with two bathrooms. This property is in a rental program with tremendous annual income.

ART BEAT

Painting With Light

Local Photographer Nick Noble Captures Our Area’s Beauty, Day And Night

STORY BY CARLA EDSTROM

S

targazers of all ages love the night sky surrounding Brunswick County. Living near the ocean away from the bright city lights has its perks at night when the sky is clear, the moon is full, and there’s a slight chill in the air. Of course, taking a good photo of the stars and a full moon is a challenge to most amateur photographers. We all have taken pictures of the big full moon only to get a photo of the black sky with a white dot in the middle and a tree nearby that caught the flash. Luckily for us, there are amazingly talented people, like St. James resident and landscape photographer Nick Noble, who can uniquely capture the beauty of our world. His award-winning photos have graced the pages of many print magazines, guides, and online platforms. Recently, he was able to get breathtaking photos of the comet Neowise flying by, as well as the Milky Way. I first saw his photos posted on local Facebook pages and immediately loved his work. He captures the night sky in all its brilliance as if you are standing on the beach looking at it.

said. “At the end of the school year, I took it with me to the Outer Banks for my family vacation that year. I had a great time using it, and then started taking more pictures.”

“I like early morning and nighttime star photography,” he said.

According to Noble, planning for the photoshoot is the first step to a successful picture. “Knowing when and where the sun will rise or set, the moonrise and set times and directions. What are the tides times and coming in or going out? The location of the Milky Way Galaxy at night and is the moon out hiding the stars,” he said. “The next step is setting an alarm. People often ask me when I sleep! Often the best time for my photography is 3-5 am. Then, seeing a large scene and deciding how to isolate

Not only can he shoot great pictures of the night sky, but Noble also has an eye for beautiful landscapes. “I have no formal training in photography,” he said, explaining that he holds a Ph.D. in Economics. “Early in the development of digital cameras, Miami University gave me a digital camera to document a service learning project to teach economics to third graders,” he

A resident of St. James for the past 11 years, Noble was glad to move from Ohio to Brunswick County to be out of the snow and cold weather. “My family vacationed on the Outer Banks. When it was clear I had shoveled enough snow, we considered North Carolina as a place to retire. We explored the coastal area, and the Southport area just seemed perfect.”

a piece of it that will fit into the space of a picture. Should I include more, or include less? All of this is driven by the search for the right light,” said Noble. “Every sunrise, sunset, and milky way moment is different. How shall I try to capture this one?”

Finding great inspiration from several different photographers, Noble follows the words of the famous black and white photographer, Ansel Adams. “Adams said once that 12 good pictures in a year is a good crop. I have fun each year trying to narrow my pic-

ART BEAT tures down to the best 12,” he said. “My favorite photograph was taken on the Southport Salt Marsh walkway near sunrise. Everything came together — the sunrise, the clouds, the building lights, the light on the grasses, the reflections, the tides. I try something and if I like it, I spend

more effort in that direction. If I don’t like it, I try to decide if it is a bad idea or if it is fixable. Rule - go to the walkway when sunrise and high tide are together!” Noble’s photography prints and calendars are for sale in Southport at the Artisans Gallery on Howe. SHOWCASE

A Bennie With the Jets STORY CONTRIBUTED

PEANUT BUSTER PARFAIT ONLY

Hats off to the Cape Fear Regional Jetport for hosting another drive-in concert on Saturday, November 7. Sponsored by Up Your Arts, the two acts featured are Wilmington’s go-to dance band Uptown Easy and Southport’s own Charlene and the Bluegrass Charlatans. Both have signed up to put on a really big show from 2-5 pm, with all COVID-19 protocols in place. Gates open at 1 pm; the cost is $40 per carload, with all tickets being sold in advance through www.upyourarts.org. The rain date is November 14, same time, same place. Southport’s Frying Pan Restaurant will be serving up barbecue goodness in its new mobile kitchen, along with one other local catering favorite, priced separately on site. On top of experiencing live music in an outdoor space big enough for social distancing and dancing, fans will help Up Your Arts add to the future of creative and performing arts in our area. Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Save the Hall, Y’all campaign to transform Southport’s old city hall building on Moore Street into a community-based arts center. This multi-year effort is poised to enter an important new phase, after it was recently determined the now-vacant historic building is structurally viable and a feasible candidate for renovation. It has always functioned at the center of municipal life; built in the 1850s, it served as the Brunswick County Courthouse over the next 120 years, until the City of Southport moved its city hall operations there in the 1970s. Work during the upcoming year to cement the building’s future as an arts center will focus on design and organizational development. Money raised between now and then will fund the cost of architectural services necessary to the creation of construction bid documents. Simultaneously, programming and fundraising strategies will be mapped out, and a board of trustees will be identified to take the project forward. Up Your Arts is grateful for the support given this project by Southport’s elected officials, who partnered with the non-profit organization for the feasibility study. Numerous volunteers have stepped forward to provide critical services free of charge and the community at large has demonstrated the arts center’s tremendous grassroots appeal. The jetport concert proceeds will provide a much-needed boost to fundraising efforts begun last year, which were halted by the pandemic. Join UpYourArts on November 7 to help Save the Hall, Y’all and put creative and performing arts front and center in the heart of downtown Southport.

Pet Issue Is Coming Soon

R

ufus The Newshound invites one and all of his furry, scaly and feathered friends to have their human friends submit critter photos for Southport Magazine’s Annual Pet Issue coming January 2021! Yes, the end of 2020 is thankfully on the horizon and we all agree that saluting our fourlegged (or winged, or finned) friends that have steadfastly stood by us through this wretched year is in order. Just email a high resolution photo of your pet to :

editor@southportmag.com

Our staff will ooooooh and ahhh and talk about how adorable your pet is and then we’ll have the difficult job of picking one to grace January’s cover. This year, at Rufus’s request, we are paying special tribute to Office/Shop/Work Pets. We couldn’t have made it through the year without the Newshound’s friendship and support, and we know we’re not the only ones with an office pet who never fails to make us smile. Let us know your submission is an Office/Shop/Work Critter and we’ll add the photo to Rufus’s Gallery.

FITNESS Preventing Golf Injuries Simple Ways To Improve Your Experience

STORY BY BRIAN TULLY, MS

G

olf injuries are real. They can linger for a long time and take away from your love for the sport. But there are things you can do to prevent some of these common injuries and pains. With the proper attention and consistency, you can set yourself up for a long, enjoyable relationship with the game of golf. Let’s take a look at some of the more common injury spots and some potential ways to prevent them.

Back Pain While back pain is a general term, for golfers it’s usually the result of having stiff muscles while trying to swing the golf club too fast with limited rotation ability and lack of proper muscle recruitment. When your muscles are stiff, your range of motion is limited and your body is working against your swing. If you force things to happen, bad results for your swing and your body are usually close behind.

The challenge with swinging a golf club is that it’s a rapid, explosive motion. It doesn’t give your muscles a chance to gradually adapt if they’re not already able to perform that range of motion. Prevent It: To help prevent back pain while you’re out on the course, it’s critical to warm up by stretching your entire body before tee time. Perform exercises between rounds to strengthen your core, so you are better able to use your hips for turning power instead of your

back. Elbow Injuries Tendonitis is one of the most common elbow injuries in the world and is caused by inflamed tendons and ligaments in your elbow. When your outer tendon is inflamed, we call it “tennis elbow.” When it’s your inner tendon, it’s “golfer’s elbow.” As we get older, our risk of getting tendonitis increases, especially if we’ve been performing activities that require repetitive movements. Hitting golf balls is a perfect example. Prevent It: To help reduce the inflammation, give yourself plenty of time to rest. To prevent these injuries from happening in the first place, work on building the muscles around your elbow (forearms, biceps and triceps) and at the shoulder to help give your arm a strong foundation to work from. Stronger muscles will support your tendons and allow you to enjoy golf for longer periods of time. Knee Pain Not many people realize how many muscles, ligaments and tendons are used during a single golf swing. And the legs make up a big part of them. Your knees play an important role in stabilizing your body and rotating the hips at the beginning of your swing. Because of the explosive movement, extreme force is placed on the knee. If that knee is weak, you run the risk of straining or tearing ligaments. Prevent It: While there are many treatment options, you can help your knees by stretching your hips and calves, as well as maintaining a flexible body. Performing exercises to strengthen your muscles, ligaments and tendons will improve the durability of your knees. Recovery is also important. If your knees are sore after a day of golf, put some ice on them to prevent swelling and inflammation, and take an extra day or two between rounds. However, swelling and inflammation after a round is a good indicator you need more than ice. Mobility and strength training are important to keep those knees viable for the years ahead. Rotator Cuff Injuries If you feel a sharp pain in your shoulder or upper arm while swinging your golf club, you might be dealing with the start of a rotator cuff injury. Check with

46 Southport Magazine /November /November 2020 / www.SouthportMag.com

your doctor. Other common symptoms include experiencing pain during the night and when you extend your arm overhead. Rotator cuff injuries are often the result of traumatic force. For golfers, it can happen when you poorly execute a golf swing, hit a rock or simply overuse your muscles. Prevent It: Common treatments include anti-inflammatory drugs (talk to your doctor) and sometimes surgery. You can help prevent rotator cuff injuries by improving shoulder flexibility and doing golf-specific weight training exercises to strengthen and properly utilize the rotator cuff musculature. Wrist Injuries Swinging a golf club is a repetitive motion. If your body isn’t equipped to handle these repetitive motions, injuries are far more likely to occur. Your wrists are no exception. The typical high-speed swing places a lot of explosive pressure on your wrists. Pain and tenderness are commonly experienced at the moment of impact and at the top of your backswing. Prevent It: Many wrist injuries are a form of tendonitis. When sore and inflamed you can use ice or anti-inflammatory to ease the inflammation. Check with your doctor first. Much like the other prevention methods mentioned in this article, the wrists will also benefit from strengthening and mobilizing. As well as rest when they are sore. Golf requires you to be in good physical condition to truly enjoy and perform well for years to come. You will need mobility exercises to maintain a flexible body with good range of motion, along with strength exercises to protect your joints and improve stability and body control. Add that with proper swing mechanics and you are on your way to some pain free golf. Just like with any training, take your time, start slow and progress as your body adapts. If you have any questions or other thoughts to share, I would love to hear from you! Brian@BetterTogetherFitness.com BetterTogetherFitness.com
