It was a special evening as we gave thanks to all that support our local economy. It was a joyful gathering of friends that felt more like family. We even got to meet some of Greenlands farm’s furry residents. I, personally, have never had a glass of wine with a llama and I was thrilled!!! John F. Kennedy said, “As we express our gratitude… we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” I like this quote; I try to keep it where I can see it all year long. Sitting around a beautifully decorated table with family and friends, talking about what we are thankful for is easy. Martha Stewart guides us each year to come up with activities and decora-
tions for just this occasion, but what about the rest of the year? Showing gratitude is something worth doing every day. I love November, because (for at least 30 days), thankfulness and gratitude are on everyone’s mind. No one needs reminding and fewer things tend to be taken for granted. It’s a time of year when gathering as many people as possible around the dinner table is seen as a blessing, not an inconvenience. It’s a time when we are reminded that friends are really the same as family and family is the most important thing we have. The time spent together is intentional. Maybe because we are so busy, but mostly because we are taking the time to show them how grateful we are to have them in our lives. I also love November because I can feel the Holiday season building like the crescendo in Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite! The streets are lively, the shops are bustling and you get this feeling like something really big is happening! This time of year your schedules are filling up and Southport Magazine is here to make sure you don’t miss anything. Look inside for events that are guaranteed to fill your holiday season with joy and don’t forget to shop local and support our local economy!

The 24th annual Holly Days Arts and Craft Show has something for everyone BY: JENNIFER BARNETT
THANKSGIVING WEEKEND
E
veryone loves a good craft show! There is something very special about giving a homemade gift for the holidays, but we weren’t all born with the talent to pull it off.
Come in for Holiday Savings all throughout the store.
That is why we are so fortunate to have so many creative people in our area that have been busy all year preparing for this season. Thanks to the Bellamy Group of Southport Baptist Church, the Southport City Gym at E. West Street and Atlantic Avenue, on November 7th, is the place to go. The Holly Days Arts and Craft Show has been an annual event in our area for 24 years. When it began it was just a small group of local crafters, but it has grown to Approximately 60 vendors, including some from surrounding states that make regular appearances each year. Many of the popular vendors from last year will be returning this year. Picture a sampling of all different types of creations from woodworking to
Christmas décor, jewelry to photography. There is something for everyone on your list. As you can imagine it is no easy feat to put together a large event, especially during this time of year! So to handle the load of a craft show in November, the committee begins as early as April. Sending applications to the previous year’s vendors and planning the signs is just the beginning. There is advertising to start and preparations to be made for the concession booth that they sponsor during the event. There is no detail overlooked. According to Barbara Vice, the event coordinator, “We have a wonderful group of ladies who work diligently throughout the event to assure the success of the day.” It is an important event for the group as the proceeds from the booth rentals are used to help fund local and international missions. So if you are looking for a unique gift for that special person on your list, drop by the Southport City Gym on the 7th . I’m sure you will find several things to fit the bill! Take your time and make it a day of browsing. There will be plenty of treasures to see and the ladies of the Bellamy Group will have treats at the concession stand to help you keep up your energy so you can shop ‘til you drop!! For any questions, contact Barbara Vice at 910-457-4365.

Holiday Boutique
A Holiday Tradition Celebrating the Joy of the Happiest Town
Awesome Views in Southport!
BY FJ HARMON
A
ll the Artisans from St. James are as excited as elves on Christmas Eve to share, once again, their spectacular new creations at the sixteenth Holiday Boutique in Southport, the happiest seaside town.
Festive inspiration and unprecedented shopping value will begin at the enchanting Southport Community Building, 223 East Bay Street, Southport, NC, beginning at 9:00 am thru 4:00 pm on Friday, November 13, and continuing on Saturday November 14, 9:00 am thru 4:00 pm. Each day the Boutique will offer the fun of shopping or simply browsing hundreds of exquisitely crafted creations from over sixty Artisans with nine participants offering their creations at the boutique for the first time. The Holiday Boutique actually began eighteen years ago to raise art awareness and funds in support of art students and art teachers in Brunswick County, and this remains the central purpose for this event today. The St. James Artisans have their roots in an organization founded by Barbara Brewer in 1997, who was accustomed to turning her home into a beautifully decorated holiday shop. When she moved to St. James, she continued her habit and gathered other talented Artisans to join her in her holiday celebration of art. This Holiday Boutique tradition continues at the scenic Community Building, where in a finely orchestrated three-hour transformation, devoted Artisans work their magic converting the Community Building into a festive department store boutique, filling the room with exquisite art, decorations, and gifts.
The art on display by our award winning Artisans captures the local charm and beauty of our coastal setting, flora, and fauna in original paintings of every medium. Prints will also be available. In addition, you will discover in spectacular high-resolution photography, breath taking panoramic seascapes, flower, and fowl, up close and stunning. Decorations to complete your holiday joy will be abundant, festive household decorations, colorful wreaths, charming runners, and strikingly beautiful stained glass of superb design. For gifting to all your special love ones, you will find jewelry unique as it is charming; knitted and crocheted items, whimsical and practical; shawls, scarfs, mittens, and hats; remarkable scented candles, soaps, and many, many more items will be available for purchase.

The coffeehouse was one of the oldest and most revered music institutions in Bethlehem, and has long been a hangout for music lovers and budding musicians. Originally from New Jersey, John Gorka, is a Contemporary American folk musician which, in 1991, Rolling Stone magazine called “the preeminent male singer-songwriter of what has been dubbed the New Folk Movement.” “The people who inspire me are the ones who have done more with less, and have gone farther, with more in their way” said Gorka It wasn’t long before Gorka was living in the club’s basement and working as a host and soundman when he crossed paths with legendary folk musicians like Claudia Schmidt, Stan Rogers, Tom Paxton and Eric Andersen. Their style of folk-inspired acoustic music impressed him and before long he was performing his own songs as an opener for acts passing through. Soon Gorka started traveling to New York City and was inspired by the area’s historical culture as a breeding ground for many
leading singers and songwriters. In 1984, Gorka was one of six winners in the New Folk competition at the Kerrville Folk Festival and his original songwriting skills began turning heads. Since then he has regularly toured Europe and North America. Red House Records recognized John’s talents in 1987, and released his first album, I Know, and he never slowed down. He signed with High Street Records in 1989 and went on to record five albums with High Street over the next seven years while touring about 150 nights a year. His rich adaptable songs and dry sense of humor have gained popularity and respect from audiences and critics across the country and in Europe. His tours led him through Italy, Belgium, Scotland, Ireland, Holland, Switzerland and Germany. Before long he was touring with notable friends like Nanci Griffith and Mary Chapin Carpenter and the video for his single “When She Kisses Me” became a regular on VH-1’s “Current Country,” on CMT and

BIZ Q & A
Volunteers Making a Difference!
Preserving the heritage and charm of Southport.
STORY AND PICTURES BY: KRIS BEASLEY
T
hroughout the year, the hard working volunteers of Downtown Southport, Inc. (DSI) meet monthly to spearhead many events and projects in the Southport area. Their time is donated but their actions are priceless! Meet the members of the DSI Board and learn what they’ve got cooking for fine citizens and merchants of Southport! And if you are not a member, you are missing out! Q: Tell us about Downtown Southport, Q: Inc. Who founded it and why
A:
For several years there was a Merchant Association in Southport. In 2006, several of the board members of the Merchant’s Association met with Randy Jones (Department Director of Tourism for the City of Southport) and discussed partnering to organize a joint non-profit organization. From this grass roots committee, which also consisted of community leaders, Downtown Southport Inc. (DSI) was established. In the beginning, Downtown Southport Inc. had a paid part-time Executive Director in order to qualify to be members of “Main Street”, a National organization and to organize the different activities that Downtown Southport Inc. was involved. In 2011, it was realized by the Downtown Southport Board of Directors that there were not enough funds to support a paid position and pursue the Mission of Downtown Southport Inc. It was at this time that Downtown Southport, Inc. (DSI) became a solely volunteer organization. The Board of Directors consists of 11 community and business members.
Q: What is your Mission? A:
Downtown Southport, Inc. (DSI) is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization. It is dedicated to preserving the heritage and charm of Southport. We encourage and support preservation projects, cultural activities, educational programs, tourism, as well as, economic growth in the downtown area, making downtown Southport a vital, vibrant, year-round community for citizens and guests.
Can anyone join DSI? Is it only for businesses?
A:
DSI welcomes anyone who supports and believes in the mission of DSI. Our members consist of Businesses: Retail, Food and Lodging, as well as Services, Individuals and Not-for-Profit organizations. This year, DSI has increased its membership by 20%. Membership is $25/year.
Q: Tell us about your annual events? A: DSI sponsors the following: South-
port Spring Festival (co-sponsored with the Southport/Oak Island Kiwanis Club), Southport Waterfront Market, Southport Garden Tour (co-sponsored with the Southport Garden Club), Southport Kiosk/ Wayfinding Signs (working closely with the City of Southport), Southport Trolley (co-sponsored with Southport merchants), Winter Craft Festival and the Southport Christmas Flotilla (co-sponsored with the Cape Fear Yacht Club).
Q: Please explain some of the past projects that DSI has been responsible for?
A:

These include: Donations to: • Southport Beautification Committee (2012 financial donation and financial contribution to Christmas wreath campaign 2015) • Parks and Recreation (2013, 2014, 2015) • War of 1812 (2013) • Pyrate Festival (2013) • 4th of July Naturalization Ceremony (2013, 2014)

Q:
Do you have any specific goals for 2016?
A:

Try the King George or one of the 6 specialty steak burgers, and don’t forget the special log sauce.
If you are in the mood for a salad, try the Swiss salad, with strawberries, apples, manchego cheese and a house made Swiss vinaigrette, or a Garden Salad, with baby Bella mushrooms, sweet green peas, sharp cheddar and croutons. Chicken breast, sautéed shrimp and fish of the day can be added to any salads. Kids will enjoy the L’il logger, a menu for the kids 8 and under served with tater tots and homemade dessert. In addition to the menu items, the Bouncing Log Cafe features a Meal of the Day. On the day I visited, the feature was meatloaf with gravy, made Swiss style, with thick homemade wine and cream gravy. The plate comes with your choice of 2 sides: coriander candied carrots, boiled potatoes, or field peas. The peas are local dry beans from Bear Branch Milling here in Brunswick County. Another daily special is Jackie’s specialty, Knopfli. Knopfli is a Swiss dish of homemade pasta. It is small dime-sized pasta, with creamy cheese sauce gravy. Most of the diners highly recommend getting a dessert. Fresh baked desserts, depending on the day, include cupcakes, cookies, and cinnamon rolls. Jackie makes her own brown sugar with real molasses as
well as fresh baked bread and bread rolls. Call in orders can be made for cakes. The eatery will be closed on Thanksgiving, but will serve traditional hot plates with turkey and ham and all the trimmings including a homemade cranberry sauce, during the days surrounding the holiday. The Bouncing Log Cafe is a true Mom and Pop. Their daughter Corrine, a student at the Early College at BCC helps out on weekends, and their son, four year old Scott, is content playing with his assortment of Legos. To stay in contact and connect with their regular customers, The Bouncing Log Cafe offers a rewards program with discounts. “It offers a huge benefit to our regular customers,” says Loyd. “We are enjoying the challenges and pleasantly surprised by the number of word of mouth customers, some that make the trip from Wilmington for the Swiss influenced recipes.” boasts the Tylers. Jackie and Loyd work side by side, their enthusiasm for what they are doing is palpable as they discuss the menu, bouncing ideas off each other: family meals to go, ingredients, features, desserts; all tasty morsels of what’s in the works as the Bouncing Log Cafe continues to roll thru its first year.

Needless to say, one night will not allow you to make even a dent in visiting participating brewers, and imagine that each one has three to five different recipes to taste. It was quite overwhelming. Ushers were handing out maps of the convention center upon entry and we immediately formed our plan of attack. After all, we had just a one day pass and we had a lot of beer to taste in a mere 4-1/2 hours. We made sure that we visited all of the North Carolina entries, even though only three of the 12 distribute to Eastern North Carolina. It was fun seeing our niece, Liz Nance, Vice President of Marketing at Nantahala Brewing Company in Bryson City, North Carolina. Our son had not met
his cousin-in-law so it was a double treat for them to finally make acquaintance. High on our list of must do’s while there was to visit those companies represented whose product we sell at The Grape & Ale. We wanted to meet the faces behind the beers as well as pick up a little beer swag (and we did) along the way. We couldn’t pass up checking out the booths of consistent award and medal winners whose production capacity has not grown to stretch to NC such as Russian River (Pliney the Elder), Firestone Walker, Odell Brewing, Deschutes, and Clown Shoes just to name a few. There was typically a line in front of each of these booths waiting to get a taste of the golden nectar.
CHEERS
All of these medal winners were tasted at The Grape & Ale’s TBT (Thursday Brats and Tastes) during the month of October. Stop in every Thursday evening from 5-7 p.m. to taste the latest and greatest new selections on our beer menu. The festival lasts seven days in total with
tap takeovers, food pairing demonstrations, and other parties throughout the Denver area. As tickets for the three day expo are usually sold out immediately upon going on sale, these events leading up to the grand finale weekend give the unfortunate non-ticket holders an opportunity to get a taste from other locations. The 2016 dates are October 6-8. If you would like more information, so you can make your plans early for next year, visit www.greatamericanbeerfestival.com.

KITCHEN
Stuffing vs. Dressing!
Discovering the secrets behind the debate of the ages! STORY BY: KRIS BEASLEY
I
grew up in Vienna, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, DC. From the time I can remember, Thanksgiving was always my favorite meal.
BARBARA ADAMS’ STUFFING Here is what I remember about preparing a stuffed turkey for Thanksgiving. I I have no idea about exact measurements of the ingredients because it was all about what my mouth told me after each addition. I tasted the raw stuffing constantly until I said Aaaaah! That’s right on! Even sitting at the card table, I felt like a queen with my plate piled high with everything from juicy turkey to stuffing! There - I said it! Stuffing! Yes, I grew up with stuffing. Small cubes of bread mixed with celery and onions and seasoned perfectly with chicken broth and herbs. My mother, Barbara Adams makes the best. And she would make wet and dry stuffing. The wet would be stuffed in the turkey and baked right along with and then scooped out and served as wet. The dry (which was always my favorite) was placed in a shallow pan and baked and served as dry. I would love to ladle my mom’s homemade gravy (another one of her specialties) over the crispy stuffing, next to the mashed potatoes with the melted butter lagoon in the center. Oh my, I am drooling! Many years later I married a Southern Boy and experienced dressing for the first time. I can still remember the day I ate it for the first time, at his family farm in Loris, South Carolina. The table was packed with all the usual Thanksgiving fare - including dressing, a solid bread like consistency that was scooped out with a spoon. What was this foreign substance? I served myself a spoonful and was pleasantly surprised - it was delicious. It was light, moist and flavorful. The flavor was similar to the stuffing I knew, but the consistency was different. Now, after 21 years of marriage, I have grown to love both stuffing and dressing alike! I reached out to both of my Moms - Barbara Adams and June Beasley to get their recipes to share. Whether you are a stuffing fan or a dressing fan, I think you will find both these recipes will not disappoint!
INGREDIENTS • 1 18-20 lb. Turkey • Dry bread cubes in a bag, or day old or more sliced bread cubed. Amount depends on how many are eating. Guesstimate would be 2 Cups per person. • 1 or 2 onions roughly chopped • 1 bunch of celery, including green leaves, roughly chopped (or about same amount as onion) • 1 bunch of parsley, roughly chopped • 1/4 cup melted butter • 1 or 2 cup chicken broth, to moisten a bit • Poultry seasoning to taste • Salt and pepper to taste DIRECTIONS If it tastes good after mixing all these ingredients together, it will taste great after baking inside the turkey or in a casserole. Lightly salt the inside of the turkey cavity and lightly press the stuffing inside. Skewer the skin from the neck over the stuffing. Put the remaining stuffing in a casserole and cover with a lid or tin foil and bake along with the turkey. Bake at 325 in oven or until thermometer reaches 165 when inserted in turkey thigh. Approximate baking time for a 16-20 lb turkey (stuffed) would be 6-9 hours. This recipe has served my family well for over 50 years.

JUNE BEASLEY’S DRESSING It is hard for me to give exact ingredients as I make it by taste but here is the basic recipe I use. And I always make the cornbread by scratch. I do not buy the cornbread crumbs. INGREDIENTS For the cornbread: 1 cup yellow Corn Meal (I like House Autry) 1 cup Self-Rising Flour 1 egg 1 cup Milk 1/4 cup vegetable oil Combine the dry ingredients and mix with the wet ingredients. Pour in a greased 8 inch pan. Bake in a preheated 425 degree oven for 25 minutes. Cool. For the dressing: Medium onion - chopped 2 celery stalks - chopped 1/4 cup of melted butter 1 raw egg 2 cups of chicken broth 3 slices of white bread 1/2 tsp of pepper Baked Cornbread from above Crumble cooled cornbread in a large mixing bowl. Add 3 slices of white bread by crumbling with your fingers. Beat egg and add to the dry mix. Add pepper. The add onion and celery. Then pour chicken broth in and mix with a spatula until it is a pudding consistency. You may have to add more chicken broth to get it to the pudding state. Pour into a greased 9 x 13 pan. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for an hour. If you want you can add these ingredients: Rice, Leftover Biscuits, Pecans, Turkey Broth, Turkey or Chicken pieces and Oysters.

Holiday Concerts
Tis the Season for Music
Local concerts offer opportunities for getting into the Christmas spirit BY NEILL CALDWELL
“S
nowflakes in the air Carols everywhere. Olden times and ancient rhymes Of love and dreams to share.” “Christmas Time Is Here” from A Charlie Brown Christmas, by Vince Guaraldi and Lee Mendelson
5 to 11 who will join the performance, adding to the experience of “an entertaining night for the whole family, and one sure to bring out the Christmas spirit for all who attend.” In addition to the music, this year’s show will include a lot of choreography plus a special appearance by a tap dance group – Tappers Extraordinaire – and a sound and light show. Tickets are available at Ricky Evans Gallery on Howe Street and at Color Me Graphics on Country Club Drive. They will also be available at the door if the show is not sold out. “The adults (in this year’s show) are all experienced Amuzu cast members, who’ve appeared in many of our previous shows, and will be familiar to our regular audience.” “There’s so much talent in Southport and Brunswick County,” said Cathy Furpless, Laura’s mother and the band leader. “People seem to come out of the woodwork.” The Amuzu Theater is located at 111 N. Howe Street. For more information, call (910) 523-2552, email amuzutheatre@yahoo. com or look for the theatre on Facebook.
SEA NOTES CHORAL SOCIETY
Christmas and music seem to go together like “jingle” and “bells.” There are so many wonderful holiday carols, many of which we identify with our childhood. And we seem to start enjoying those songs in stores and on the radio beginning just after Labor Day. But if you’re slow to join in on the Christmas merriment, there are some upcoming concert opportunities that will get you wrapped up with a bow in the proper spirit.
THE AMUZU THEATER
The Amuzu Theater in downtown Southport is offering a seven-course musical banquet starting on December and
continuing December 4, 5, 6, 10, 12 and 13. All shows start at 7:30 p.m. Laura Furpless is directing the group of 18 performers and a five-piece band in “Christmas at the Amuzu 2015.” “The music includes classics such as ‘O Holy Night’ as well as more modern songs by artists Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkson, Stevie Wonder, The Ronettes and Celine Dion,” Furpless said. “The cast have been preparing a few comedy numbers such as ‘The Christmas Can-Can,’ and a beautiful a capella arrangement of ‘Mary Did you Know?’” Furpless said one new addition to the 2015 lineup is a group of five children ages
The area’s other Christmas music performances will come from the Sea Notes Choral Society, which will present its holiday concert twice. On Dec. 5 there will be a Saturday evening concert starting at 7:30, followed by a Sunday matinee on Dec. 6 at 3:00. Both concerts will be offered at the Odell Williamson Auditorium on the campus of Brunswick County Community College. The free 2015 concert – “Joys of the Christmas Season” – will be led by Sea Notes Choral Society director Larry Reinhart. The choir, which has numbered as large as 150 singers and has been providing entertainment to Brunswick County for more than 40 years, will present a mix of sacred and secular favorites. Jane Boberg will be back as the accompanist. For more information on the SeaNotes’ concerts, call (910) 620-6275, visit www.sea-notes.com, visit the group’s Facebook page or send an email to SeaNotesChoral@gmail.com.

This was followed by a lazy nap (in the hotel), a holiday tradition for the men in my family as I grew up but never for the women as we were in charge of clean up. There was even a rival football game playing on the TV to hide the fact that the men were really sleeping. Of course, they blamed it on the turkey! Poor Tom Turkey getting a bad rap again! Is the reputed narcoleptic state induced by eating turkey a fact or fiction? Is the myth of L-tryptophan scientifically based or hear say? And, what is L- tryptophan anyway? L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins that are necessary in our body. An essential amino acid means it must be supplied by the foods we eat as it cannot be made by our body. Tryptophan is found in many protein sources including turkey, chicken, beef, pork, cheese, yogurt, fish and eggs. In fact, turkey is not any higher in tryptophan than other poultry. One dietary source I found in my research reported an average serving of chicken or ground beef
Poor Tom Turkey getting a bad rap again! Is the reputed narcoleptic state induced by eating turkey a fact or fiction?
contained the same levels of tryptophan as turkey. The same source stated that Swiss cheese and pork have higher levels. Can you really blame your slumber on turkey but not on a gigantic burger? Tryptophan is converted in our body to niacin (a B vitamin) and serotonin. As you may recall from some of my previous articles, serotonin is a neurotransmitter in the brain that is associated with mood.
HEALTH
Higher levels of serotonin make you feel better. Serotonin is also metabolized in the pineal gland to the hormone melatonin which helps to control sleep and wake cycles. (Do you feel like you need your organic chemistry and physiology notes from college yet?) So, just reading this, you might assume that all that turkey makes tons of melatonin and you fall asleep. Well, not really. Although dietary supplements range from 500mg-1000mg, a serving of turkey only has 350mg of tryptophan. You would need to devour the whole bird, on an empd ty stomach and with no other proteins to it on your need for a nap! That is n blame unlikely at any holiday table! d What really occurs has to do with the whole Thanksgiving meal itself. First, this time of relaxation with family (I know... think Norman Rockwell) allows the restful state. Second, there typically is alcohol involved which contributes to nap status. Also, we gorge ourselves causing blood to divert to the intestinal tract which requires energy. However, the typical Thanksgiving meal also is heavy on carbohydrates and this is the real culprit. When you eat carbohydrates (sugars) like potatoes, candied yams etc. the pancreas secretes insulin to “handle” the sugar load. Insulin stimulates muscles to absorb some types of amino acids but tryptophan is left in the blood and crosses into the brain where serotonin is formed then processed into melatonin. Thus, carbs make you sleepy!! Chemistry and physiology lesson aside, Tom Turkey deserves an apology! Turkey alone is not responsible for your nap. However, I’m really hoping my children won’t read this article so I can blame the turkey and they can clean up...good idea? Wishing you a blessed and restful Thanksgiving!

TURKEY FUN FACTS:
• The wild turkey was hunted nearly to extinction by the early 1900s; the population reached a low of around 30,000 birds. Thanks to restoration programs across North America the numbers have climbed above seven million today. • There are six subspecies of wild turkey, all native to North America. The pilgrims hunted and served the eastern wild turkey on their Thanksgiving table, sometimes called the forest turkey, they are the most numerous of all the turkey subspecies. Male turkeys are called “gobblers,” after the “gobble” call they make to announce themselves to females (which are called “hens”) and compete with other males. Other turkey sounds include “purrs,” “yelps” and “kee-kees.” • An adult gobbler weighs 16 to 22 pounds on average, has a beard of modified feathers on his breast that reaches seven inches or more long, and has sharp spurs on his legs for fighting. • A hen is smaller, weighing around 8 to 12 pounds, and has no beard or spurs. Both genders have a snood (a dangly appendage on the face), wattle (the red dangly bit under the chin) and only a few feathers on her head. • Studies have shown that snood length is associated with male turkey health. Female turkeys prefer males with long snoods and that snood length can also be used to predict the winner of a competition between two males. (I guess size matters to turkeys?) • Turkeys can run at speeds of up to 25 miles per hour and fly as fast as 55 miles per hour.

Food, Glorious Food Chef is a tasty film to drool over BY: EMILY KLINEFELTER & JENNIFER BARNETT
W
ith Thanksgiving and Small Business Saturday right around the corner the Movie Mavens were on the hunt for a movie about both food and small business. This made sense since we love to eat during the holiday season but we also love to support our local businesses A.K.A. SHOP! After a couple of weeks of throwing around ideas of what movie to review we finally landed on Jon Favreau’s 2014 movie, Chef. Jon Favreau directed, wrote and starred in this feel good movie. It has a star-packed cast and is really fun to watch. The movie is about Chef Carl Casper (Jon Favreau). After 10 years of hard work, food critics have discovered his talents working in a 5-star restaurant run by no other than Dustin Hoffman, owner Riva. We immediately discover the two do not
agree on much. Chef Carl wants to use his creativity and cook a menu that tests his culinary skills. Riva wants his Chef to stick to the tried and true menu and continue to cook the food that his customers know and obviously love. One night a well-known culinary blogger comes into the restaurant to write a review of Carl’s food. It’s no secret that he is coming in and so Chef creates a menu that is sure to knock his socks off!! This creates some problems with Riva, as you can

CHEF (2014) DIRECTOR: JON FAVREAU WRITER: JON FAVREAU RATED: R imagine…. This movie is great at showing all the effort a chef takes creating a menu and choosing all the right ingredients. We got to see Carl at the market, looking over all the available ingredients and prepping
the food for the restaurant. There is a lot that we, as diners, don’t take into consideration when we sit down to a meal and expect everything to be perfect. These guys (and gals) work hard! It is clearly Chef Carl’s passion! Having a strong passion for his career has contributed to sort of a downward spiral of Carl’s personal life. He is divorced and has a son who is desperate for his attention. He is at a crossroads of sorts and needs to start making decisions that will direct him on a path more conducive to creative cooking, success and of course, more time to be a father! Chef is lucky to have some great people in his life. We meet his beautiful, ex-wife Inez (Sofia Vergara) who suggests that Carl help her out of a tough spot and at the same time manages to get Carl to spend more time with his son, and doing all the things he used to love; as she put it, find his Mojo! Miami seems to be the place to find your Mojo! While in Miami, Carl takes on a new project with the help of his ex-wives, ex-husband Marvin (Robert Downey Jr.). He begins to embrace all the

things he loves and as a result also begins to recognize all that he has been taking for granted. This movie allowed us to watch Chef Carl’s eyes open to everything he was missing right in front of his face the whole time! Carl turns back to the basics and with the help of his best friend Martin (John Leguizamo) and his son, the social networking wiz, the gang hits the road to try and revive his reputation and love of cooking. This movie made us drool the entire time (our dinners suddenly became not so satisfying) as well as smile from ear to ear. Be sure to stock up on snacks for this one, but make them really good snacks! This movie inspires, it encourages, and it shows the effects of social media! It will make you reflect on your career path, envision your future for what it should/could be, it will give you a nudge if that’s what you need and it will make you hungry!! Just in time for Thanksgiving! It is also in time for Small Business Saturday!

Check it out to see what happens and what changes occur. Jon Favreau is one of our new favorites! It didn’t hurt the movie, at all, to have Scarlett Johansson and Oliver Platt grace the screen! Wow! What a great cast. The little boy who plays Chef’s son, Emjay Anthony, is adorable as well. If you haven’t figured it out by now, this is a feel good movie. These kinds of movies are hard to come by these days. Just ask Emily, who kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. She was sure that John Leguizamo was a bad guy! He is ultimately the best friend EVER!! Just sit back and enjoy it. It is a delicious movie! Let it make you smile (and hungry). Then go hug all the people who love and support you! Then go support the people in your life! Like all the hard working small business owners in town! They may make it look easy, but they work really hard. We definitely have a renewed respect for Chefs! We would recommend this movie to everyone! The language and banter between the men gets a little inappropriate at times but most of the time it just made us laugh.

Those tween years can be a little scary as kids transition from elementary to middle school lives, so we want to offer the opportunity to help guide them through that process by looking at Bible stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things in the world! Each week will begin with supper provided by the church followed up with fun Bible study using videos, hands-on activities and games. There is no cost for our students and any 5th or 6th grader in the community is welcome! For more information or registration, contact Stefanie Riley at sriley@seasideumc. org.
