LETTER FROM THE TOP DOG

OZZY

BELLA R.I.P.

Hey Everyone,

It’s our issue and it is nice to see all my local brothers and sisters striking a pose for the mag. 2015 has been a good year. I was psyched about Southport winning Happiest Seaside Town and the fact that Oak Island still allows us on their beaches! We are very lucky to live is such a cool place. My mom and the Southport magazine team have put together some really great stuff for our owners to enjoy in this issue. My personal favorite is editor, Jennifer Barnett’s CHEERS article on Bowzer Beer! She asked me to be her taste tester but my Mom said no, because I am not 21 yet! I am looking forward to 2016 and all the new sights and smells in my future. I would like to give a shout out to my brother, Caramel and sisters, Penny and Bella who are in heaven. I miss you. Big wet kisses,

Ozzy Beasley

Helping our Feathered Friends Take Flight Sea Biscuit Wildlife Shelter helps injured birds spread their wings again STORY BY: LISA P. STITES

W

hy have dogs and cats at home like most people, when you can have a pelican, a barred owl, a red-tail hawk and a fish crow? For Mary Ellen Rogers of the Sea Biscuit Wildlife Shelter it’s all about caring for injured or orphaned shorebirds, providing safety, rehabilitation, then releasing them back to the wild.

In operation since 2007, the Sea Biscuit Wildlife Shelter on Oak Island has helped more than 3,000 birds with the hopes of releasing them back into their natural habitats. Sometimes, that’s just not possible though, and that’s when she looks for homes at other rehabilitation centers, zoos or other wildlife centers. Birds can stay at the shelter for a maximum of 180 days. The four permanent residents of the shelter serve as educators and ambassadors on the shelter’s behalf. Rogers has special federal permits to keep those four birds permanently. To continue meeting the federal requirements, she has to have them participate in twelve educational programs every year. “I love making sure all these critters have a good home,” she said. The 72-yearold says she will keep doing what she does every day, whether it’s driving to another county to pick up or deliver a bird, performing basic medical treatments, feeding and caring for everyone at the shelter, until she no longer can. “I feel like I’m contributing back to the environment which I love so much, especially Oak Island. We have everything here,” she said. Rogers started the shelter in 2007, after spending more than 200 hours volunteering with the South Carolina Center for Birds of Prey. Rogers said she already had experience working with birds, but not specifically shore birds. She needed the extra time to qualify for federal sheltering permits. “I can do anything from hummingbirds to eagles,” she said. So far this year, she has worked with 378 birds; she usually averages 350 per year. Rogers estimates that she has worked with more than 3,000

birds. Rogers also recently went through the permitting process to be able to accept fawns, too. She had taken in two so far.

SOMEONE HAS TO SHOW THE NEW GUYS WHAT TO DO

Tim the Pelican came from Holden Beach to the shelter in 2009 when he was approximately four months old. One of his wings will only stretch 20 inches, while the other, good wing stretches 24 inches, so he’ll never fly straight, Rogers explained. Otherwise, he’s a healthy bird and serves as a role model for the new tenants. “His primary job around here is to teach the other guys how to behave,” Rogers said. Tim teaches the other birds that it’s ok to pick up fish off the ground and eat them, for example. Tim is also a good ambassador for the program. As one of the permanent residents at Sea Biscuit, Tim travels with Rogers for educational programs. Pelicans have a life span of 25-30 years, so Tim is still relatively young.

With a little help from Rogers, Shadow snags a dead mouse for supper. The other barred owl ate the other four mice Rogers gave themearlier that day.

SHADOW IS A BEAUTIFUL BARRED OWL

Shadow is one of two birds of prey that now call the shelter home. Shadow is totally blind and unable to survive on her own. She was hit by a vehicle and came to the shelter two years ago temporarily sharing quarters with another barred owl who Rogers hopefully will be able to return to the wild. He is a little skinnier than he should be, but is otherwise healthy. Shadow weighs in at 849 grams, while the male owl (unnamed since he won’t be staying) is only 680 grams. Rogers said she’ll likely soon return him to the Maco area where he came from, in case he had a mate there. “This is mating season for these guys,” she said.

Rogers reaches out to stroke the tail feathers of Scarlet, one of four permanent residents of the shelter that serves as part of the education team.

Tim the pelican ignores Rogers’ efforts to lure him into the pelican bedroom, preferring to stay out by the pool instead.

Rogers has also worked with screech owls. She placed one such owl, named Harley, with the Falling Creek Camp for Boys near Asheville, NC. She had another one in late 2014, but was unable to relocate it to Florida as she originally planned. That state banned the transport of birds from North Carolina due to an outbreak of the avian flu. The boys’ camp just happened to be looking for another screech owl, so the timing worked out perfectly. The staff at the camp named him Davidson.

BOZO THE CLOWN, OR, HAWK

Red-tailed hawk Scarlet is the other bird of prey in residence. Another red-tailed hawk, affectionately called Bozo temporarily, is missing nine primary feathers on his wings. Bozo was actually recaptured and brought back to the shelter. When he was supposed to be released this summer, a crowd gathered to watch. But instead of flying away, he climbed a tree. He hung around in the area, terrorizing smaller birds that gathered in backyard bird baths and feeders, and generally being aggressive in people’s backyards. Rogers went to his location on East Yacht Drive and tried to catch him. “Of course, he didn’t want to be caught and he’s faster than me,” she said. She got a call a couple of days later from a neighbor a few houses down from the original complaint. For her second attempt, she brought along mice. She tossed one to him and he grabbed it with one foot. She tossed him another, and he realized too late that he couldn’t run away with his feet full of mice. Though he started shuffling sideways to make his great escape, Rogers was able to nab him. He will start flight training soon, exercis8 Southport Magazine / January 2016 / www.SouthportMag.com

es designed to get him back in shape for swooping down and capturing food, and eventually he’ll be sent to Cape Fear Raptors, a rehabilitation center in Rocky Point, NC. Until his training starts, he and Scarlet will continue their diet of dead mice.

‘NOBODY WANTS A CROW’

The newest addition to the shelter’s educational team is Lusby, a fish crow named for the town in Maryland where he came from eight months ago. There’s a veterinarian there who provides care for injured birds and then finds rehabilitation centers for them. Lusby had an amputation and is missing half of one of his wrists. He was a big hit at Oak Island’s Spooktacular event at Halloween, Rogers explained. Everyone thought he was a raven. Although he can nevermore fly, Rogers said Lusby is very smart. He’s definitely not one of the more popular shore birds she has though. “Nobody wants a crow,” she said. At least he has quit biting her, she said. Lusby has two large indoor cages. He is susceptible to the West Nile virus, and since there have been reports of the virus in Brunswick County, he has to remain indoors for now. He seems to prefer one cage over the other though, as one gives him the chance to see the backyard, where the other birds are. Other birds at the shelter include a vulture, three adult and three juvenile pelicans and two Northern Gannets, one adult approximately five years old and one youngster that is probably just one year old. They are migratory birds, coming from as far north as Nova Scotia. They fly south and then ride the Gulf Steam north when it’s time to return. The adult got tangled up in fishing line, a common reason birds

CURRENTS need the shelter’s help. The younger one got tangled with a hooked fish. Rogers said they are vicious birds. She also said they are “projectile poopers,” a claim which one of the birds proved true while being photographed. Fortunately, it was standing on the side of the newly-installed pelican pond at the time, aiming toward the water. A Mississippi Kite also spent some time at the shelter this past summer. With 2015 recently ended, a review of the statistics for 2014 gives a closer look at the shelter’s impact on the local wildlife population. Rogers said she has a great volunteer base. In 2014, those volunteers logged in more than 3.900 hours in the clinic, which adds up to almost $60,000 in unpaid labor. Transporters for short distances (less than 25 miles) were valued at $52,000 and long distance, $28,000 for time and mileage expenses. Goods, food and services received were worth more than $1,000, not including the veterinarian contributions totaling over $4,000. Rogers said she receives assistance from three in the area. Individual donors and organizations support the shelter with over $12,000. Rogers, volunteers and the birds did more than 30 educational programs in 2014, reaching more than 3,900 children and adults. She and the volunteers also documented avian migration patterns, identifying possible

toxins and human impacts. The Sea Biscuit Wildlife Shelter is a non-profit organization that relies on donations from the Town of Oak Island, individuals and private businesses. Although he does not enjoy being picked up, Rogers said that atleast he doesn’t bite her anymore.

Rescue Pets make the best pets

Do yourself a favor and consider one of these local agencies when looking for your next pet. STORY BY: NEILL CALDWELL

I

f you are contemplating pet ownership, we hope you will consider adopting a rescue pet. Staff writer, Neill Caldwell showcases three, local agencies: Southport Oak Island Animal Rescue (SOAR), Paws Place Dog Rescue and Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Animal Protective Services. Each can help you find the perfect fit for your family. Who: Southport Oak Island Animal Rescue (SOAR) What: SOAR is a non-profit, no-kill animal rescue off Airport Road that provides safe shelter, medical treatment, healthy food, daily care and love to lost and abandoned dogs and cats. When: Adopting time at the facility is on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and weekday mornings by appointment (from 8 a.m. to noon only). Where: 3376 St. Charles Pl., Southport, NC 28461; Phone: (910) 457-6340; Website: soar-nc.org and “SOAR” on Facebook Why: SOAR is a popular and well-staffed facility that gets creative with its promotions to bring in people who might be interested in adopting a pet. Just recently the organization participated with a float in the Oak Island Christmas parade, offered a “Merry Treats and Eats” event at the Oak Island Rec Center, and welcomed a Girl Scout troop that had collected supplies for the facility. Anything to show off the future household pets who live there! And recently several residents got a holiday treat when Maggie Lin and the “Pawsative Moble Pet Spa” van visited. Both SOAR’s main website and Facebook pages are kept up-to-date with photos of these activities, and of course lots of photos of adoptable animals. One area of interest is that SOAR offers cats with Feline Leukemia and Feline Immunodeficiency Viruses that are quite adoptable. The main website also lists ways to help SOAR continue, including donations (both financial and responding to their wish list), sponsoring animals, adopting animals, and volunteering. In the 23 years since Jeannie Friday Bicknell started SOAR, hundreds of animals have been placed in loving homes.

Who: Paws Place Dog Rescue What: A privately run, non-profit, no-kill dog-only rescue facility located on five acres in Boiling Spring Lakes and founded in 1999 by Nancy Janovetz. “We are dedicated to finding dogs a loving home, no matter how long it takes — one life at a time.” When: Adopting opportunities are available on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The first and third Saturdays of each month, the “meet-and-greets” are held at Four Legs Good in Southport. The second and fourth Saturdays, they are held at Unleashed of Wilmington in the Landfall Shopping Center. Where: 3701 E. Boiling Spring Road, Winnabow, NC 28479; Phone: (910) 845-PAWS (7297); Website: www.pawsplace.org, and “Paws Place Dog Rescue” on Facebook. At Zeetlegoos on the first Saturday of the month. They are breaking ground on a new location in Winnabow this month! Why: Someone at Paws Place is obviously social media and Internet savvy, as the group has an attractive website and homes on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram! (If you’re particularly a fan of photos of cute doggies, the Instagram feed is a must follow!) That coverage means there’s no excuse for not knowing about this dog sanctuary in Boiling Springs. Paws Place covers the region from coastal Brunswick County to Wilmington and primarily gets out into the community with regular appearances – they call them “Meet-and-Greets” to show off the dogs to potential owners. The word “rescue” in the name of the business is important, as many dogs come to Paws Place in serious need of love and medical care. Many were simply abandoned and some were abused. Right now the facility has about 30 dogs that are ready for adoption. The organization holds an annual find-raiser called “Raise the Ruff” which is designed for on-going support and a building project for a new state-of-the-art indoor/outdoor facility that will improve conditions for both dogs and staff and lower operating expenses. Paws Place is also selling commemorative bricks to help fund that project, a great way to honor a pet or a pet lover in your life. Visit the website to learn more. 1

The agency was in the news this past summer when it rescued More than 100 chickens, ducks, pigeons and other birds, along with 10 dogs, from deplorable conditions at a run-down home. State Human Society Director Kim Alboum praised the staff, saying, “No animal should be forced to live in such a small area and breathe this ammonia-filled air. We’re thankful to Brunswick County Animal Control for taking action in this case and allowing us to help rescue these animals.” And remember, if you have a situation with a scrappy snake, a problem possum or a belligerent bunch of bees … that’s a Wildlife Resources problem! The Kennedys Sing an American Dream The folk-rock duo make a stop at Odell Williamson BY: JEFFERY STITES

F

ans of American roots music have a treat in store this month as The Kennedys make their third appearance in Brunswick County. Combining sounds reminiscent of Buddy Holly and The Everly Brothers with more modern acoustic and electric vibes (and even a ukulele). The Kennedys are celebrating 20 years of marriage and 20 years as a musical duo. Husband and wife team Pete and Maura Kennedy are touring this year in support of three new albums—each artist has released a solo CD as well as The Kennedys’ newest, “West,” inspired by the couple’s search for America’s musical roots and their own musical version of the American dream. “Two decades on, The Kennedys are hitting a songwriting high point, and from that point they follow the well-worn American path West,” said Jeannie Dufour, director of Listen Up Brunswick County. The Kennedy’s will take the stage at the Virginia Williamson Events Center inside the Odell Williamson Auditorium building on the campus of Brunswick Community College on Saturday, January 9th at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $20 in advance and $24 at the door. Advance tickets can be purchased at the Fuzzy Peach or Cattail Cottage in Southport, the Chamber of Commerce on Main Street in Shallotte, or online at www.listenupbrunswickcoun-

ty.com. All ages are welcome and doors open at 7:00 pm. Not only will concert-goers enjoy some wonderful music, they will be helping their community. The Kennedys represent the first show of the 2016 Season for Listen Up Brunswick County, a non-profit, dedicated to music and charity. Proceeds from this show, and the rest of Listen Up’s 2016 season, will go to benefit the New Hope Clinic, providing medical services to low income un- and under-insured Brunswick County residents. A representative of the New Hope Clinic will be at each show this year to answer questions and talk about the clinic’s work. “We have been fortunate to receive support from the business community and residents within the borders of Brunswick County. It is gratifying to be recognized for our goal to bring great music to the county while supporting those in need from Calabash to Leland,” said Dufour. Listen Up Brunswick County continues pursuing its mission of “Good Music/Good

Deeds” with three more shows in 2016. Philadelphia-bred singer/songwriter Vance Gilbert will appear Saturday, February 20th. Idlewheel Acoustic, featuring Craig Bickhardt & Jack Sundrud of the 1960s-era country-rock band Poco, will be in town on Friday,

March 18th. And Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter and activist Eliza Gilkyson will perform a matinee show on Sunday, April 17th. All shows are at the Virginia Williamson Events Center. Details can be found on the Listen Up Brunswick County website.1

Stayin’ Alive After all these years! BY: JEFFREY STITES

S

o what’s your favorite Bee Gees song? Come on, you know you have one. The album Stayin’ Alive alone sold over 30 million copies. Songs from “I Started A Joke” to “Nights On Broadway” are pop music legends.

We all know the songs, we all know the words and we all see John Travolta in our heads when “Stayin’ Alive” comes on the radio. The Bee Gees are legend, but sadly not one we can experience live and in person. Or can we? Night Fever-The Bee Gees Tribute, is coming to Odell Williamson Auditorium on the campus of Brunswick Community College for one night only, Thursday January 21, 2016 at 7:30 pm. Night Fever-The Bee Gees Tribute is

the largest production of the Bee Gees in the world. This all Canadian cast has been touring for the past ten years, recreating the look and sound of the Bee Gees. Featuring the vocals of Matthew Whale (who handles the high parts and also plays Benny in a musical production of Abbamania) as Maurice Gibb, Joe Varga (whose first concert was a Bee Gees show at 10 years old) as Robin Gibb and John Ralphs (who is in talks to portray Barry Gibb in

an upcoming Bee Gees bio-pic) as Barry Gibb, the Canadian tribute band strives to create an eerie sense of seeing the brothers Gibb alive in concert, an event impossible to see today. Capturing a full history of the Bee Gees, “Night Fever” includes material from the 1967 breakout album, “Bee Gees First,” including “To Love Somebody,” “Holiday,” “Massachusetts,” and continuing with the earlier album, “Words,” “I Got To Get A Message to You,” and “I Started A Joke.” They move on to selections from the later era’s with songs like “Nights On Broadway,” “You Should Be Dancing,” “Stayin’ Alive,” “Night Fever,” “How Deep Is Your Love” and include era #3 from their plati-

num album, “Spirits Having Flown,” with “Tragedy,” “Love You Inside Out,” and “Too Much Heaven.” Odell Williamson Auditorium Executive Director Mike Sapp says, “I believe it will be a great show. These guys are out of Canada and we have had great success with tribute groups.” Tickets are $29 for adults, $27 for seniors or students with ID, and $10 for children 12 and under and are available now at the Odell Williamson box office during regular business hours or online at www.bccowa.com. Come on out and see how the Bee Gees are Stayin’ Alive after all these years! 1

Readers send in photos of their furry friends BY SOUTHPORT READERS

E

ach year we reach out to our readers asking them to send in their pet photos for the January’s Pet issue. We chose one for the cover, which is always a very difficult decision! The handsome guy on this years cover is Biscuit Allgood. Proudly owned by Pamela Allgood of Southport NC. She told us that Biscuit enjoys his beach days on Oak Island. He sure looks like it! What a snazzy fella! We had over 50 submissions and we tried to publish all the pictures- apologies if we missed one! We would like to recognize some of the runners up for the cover shown on page 2. They are Armani McGeever, a Greyhound rescued by Agnès McGeever and Sir Scout, a Chocolate Lab puppy from Southport proudly owned by Michael Trent & Shea Williams. Thank you to all who participated. We hope you enjoy these photos as much as we did! 1

Sleep Apnea - If treated you will rest peacefully ...

FEATURE

Pets Top 10 List

Dr. Ali Travis of River Road Animal Hospital breaks it down for owners and their pets. BY DR. ALI TRAVIS

If left untreated, you might rest in peace.

I

t’s always hard to decide what to write about when you’re so passionate about your work and there’s always such interesting and cool stuff happening in veterinary medicine. So, I selected 10 things - some old, some new - that seem the most important to the bond we have with our pets. If only I could make these as funny and memorable as David Letterman!

SLEEP APNEA IS SERIOUS!

If untreated, this condition can contribute to:

1. Heart Attack 2. Stroke 3. Congestive Heart Failure 4. Uncontrolled Hypertension 5. Difficult to control blood sugars SO, LADIES if you suffer with chronic fatigue, headaches or depression and GENTLEMEN - If you suffer with loud snoring, and not feeling refreshed in the morning, YOU MAY HAVE SLEEP APNEA.

Call now for an appointment.

1. FOOD ≠ LOVE.

We love our pets so when they look hungry, we want to give them more. In one landmark study, researchers investigated 24 litter pairs over their entire lifetime. One dog in the pair was allowed to eat as much as they wanted, while the other got only 75% of what the first ate. The results were startling: the lean-fed dogs lived 1.8 healthy years longer. Before you overfill

the bowl next time, think about whether you’d choose to show your love with extra food, or extra years!

2. TEETH.

There’s no way around it: you’ve got to brush teeth. Every day. I know, that sounds awful. But bad teeth lead to bad health and lots of expense. If your vet recommends cleaning, remember this is a much more in-

FEATURE volved procedure than in people. They must be under general anesthesia with a tube to prevent the bacteria from getting into the lungs. Procedures can be long so monitoring of the kind that people get during surgery is needed: intravenous fluids, ECG, etc. And if teeth have to be pulled they need x-rays - would you let your dentist determine what needs to be done without an x-ray? So resolve this year to put your pet’s (yes, even cats can do this) toothbrush next to yours and brush theirs when you do.

3. CHRONIC PAIN.

They may not just be getting old or lazy or cantankerous , they might be in pain. No, they don’t cry, or moan. They limit what they do. Please don’t be afraid of the wonderful and amazing meds and therapies out there to help! Please! If your pet is slowing down have your vet look for pain - it can be subtle, because they hide it. But once it’s treated, you’re going to be amazed!

4. LEPTO AND LYME.

These are 2 diseases on the rise that have vaccines. There have been a bunch of cases of Leptospirosis in Wilmington. 2 were fatal People can also get this. Lyme is carried by ticks. Vaccination with 100% tick prevention is the gold standard since ticks in NC also carry diseases like Ehrlichia and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.

5. HEARTWORM RESISTANCE.

Most pets really don’t get prevention every month on time. But even when the history is perfect, we have seen positive tests. This is a nasty disease! Make sure your pets are tested every year and consider a product that makes remembering easier, like the once every 6 months ProHeart injection.

6. ADVANCES IN ALLERGY.

Itchy pets with skin and ears that are constantly infected? There are so many new opportunities to fix these! Advances in allergy testing and serum, new diets that make food trial MUCH less painful, and new drugs instead of steroids....

7. NUTRITION / DIET.

Probably the number one thing clients ask me about is food. It’s crazy. So, let’s quell a few myths: Myth: Dogs are usually allergic to corn, wheat and grains. Truth: In studies, beef was by far the biggest culprit. Dairy was number two. Wheat came in third. Soy and corn were actually minimal offenders. Myth: “It can’t be a food allergy. He’s eating the same thing he always has. “Truth: Dogs and cats, like people, can become allergic to anything, anytime. Myth: “By-products are bad.” Truth: Complete hype. By-products are mostly internal organs and bones, which

can be way more nutritious that muscle meat alone. Ever watch a video of a lion eating it’s prey? What does she eat first? Hint: not the leg meat. Cats: People think that indoor cats don’t need to come to the vet. Although outdoor cats are more prone to trauma, indoor cats are more prone to disease. Obesity, arthritis, diabetes, thyroid disease, kidney disease, urinary problems - all more common in indoor cats. We can fix or manage these if we catch them in time. Call your vet if you have trouble getting your cat to the hospital. Let’s see some kitty love in 2016!

New Year’s Resolution: Drink More Coffee!

8. END OF LIFE.

Plan ahead. Talk to your vet, especially if your pet is sick, and know what you’re going to do, when. There’s nothing more heartbreaking to me than a traumatic weekend trip to the e-clinic after a long battle with disease because we didn’t plan ahead.

9. AGE VS DISEASE

Age is not a disease. There are plenty of things we can fix or manage. If you see subtle signs - weight loss, lethargy, changes in eating, drinking, urination...call your vet!

10. NEW TICK PREVENTION.

To make your life easier: a once every 3 months flea and tick chewy for dogs. Since it’s oral, you can’t accidentally wash off with the wrong shampoo. You can find Dr. Ali and Dr Alyssa at River Road Animal Hospital. 8593 River Rd SE, Southport, NC 28461. p 910-454-8910. f 910-454-8912. atravis@rrvet.com. rrvet. com. Friend us on Facebook! 1

HOMESTYLE

Comfort and Casual Elegance The Importance and Art Of Creating A Space That You Love to Live in STORY BY: KATHLEEN MCGOWAN PHOTOS BY: BILL BURNS AND KRIS BEASLEY

I

entered Barry and Mitzi Amerson’s side yard through a small gate and was instantly taken by the well manicured landscape and charming space. Visitors are greeted by lush ferns, shelter from mature trees, gleams of color and an arbor, flawlessly enveloped with confederate jasmine providing shade and shelter for the wonderfully quaint and cozy outdoor space. Barry and Mitzi met in college at the Medical University of Charleston and have been married for 30 years. As much as they loved Charleston, Barry’s career in academic healthcare began at Wake Forest 20 years ago and it has taken the couple to Edenton, North Carolina, where they still own a home, and now to Wilmington,

North Carolina to practice anesthesiology. In 2003 the couple started looking at a new places to live and work and found a piece of land in Holden Beach. “It was a beautiful day and we’d never been to Southport so, we drove on down and had lunch at Fishy Fishy. We thought... what a great small town. Over the course

28 Southport Magazine / January 2016 / www.SouthportMag.com

of a week, we decided to look for a second house. We started with a condo at Indigo and would come down for weekends. Then decided that ideally we wanted a house with a yard and we found Cottage Point in its early years of development.” Enter builder, Tom Kennedy, and his vision for the house. Working with an interior designer, he wanted to build the

home from the ground up but this home needed to be different from the couple’s previous traditional Winston Salem home. They loved the home but it just was not what they had envisioned for their Southport home. So, between the three of them, they came up with a plan with ideas that were important to the couple and worked for them long term.

HOMESTYLE “We appreciated what they envisioned for the house and modified their ideas with what would work structurally as well as make it cool and different.” The Amersons desired a few design elements to influence the final look of their home - light, airy and comfortable living spaces that would invite and welcome entertaining, a layout that could grow with them as they aged and no formal spaces that typically were not used in the past. They had built three homes and knew what they liked, what they had and had not use and what they wanted in order to make this home their own. So, construction started in 2005 and the Amersons have been in the house full-time now since 2008. “Some things you do because you have to, because of resale value but then when it comes to making living space I think it’s important that it work for you...Your lifestyle and if it’s a place you really live in ... it’s really important”

Upon entering the home, you see the well appointed kitchen which is a nice open and comfortable space painted a comforting yellow.

Southport's Best Kept Secret

It’s a great space, featuring granite counter tops, a gas cook top facing a row of windows overlooking the porch, custom cabinets and a wine chiller.

Your neighborhood Pub

The custom cabinets are suspended and allow for communication and flow of traffic between the kitchen and the living space. Barry enjoys cooking and feels like he misses out if the kitchen is separated from the rest of the house. The adjacent living area is full of light with vaulted ceilings and plenty of windows. There’s a mix of furniture styles, colors and textures but a couple pieces are sentimental to Barry. He has his mother’s first coffee table and a side table that he remembers her buying for $5.00 when he was four years old. They aren’t valuable and wouldn’t mean anything to anyone else but, they were his mother’s and he thinks about her when he sees them. “We like the beams, the vaulted ceiling and the columns... Because these are structural columns, they actually do support the 2nd floor. We liked being able to hang the kitchen cabinets. They are suspended.”

comfy chairs and nothing but windows overlooking the lush and private side yard must make for an idyllic space to read a book or take a nap. On the other side of the living space is the master suite and laundry area. The laundry area may be one of the best ideas I’ve seen for storage and convenience. Instead of having the typical bi-fold doors on a small laundry closet, the Amersons decided to create a space where the washer and dryer are built into and hidden behind cabinet doors. There’s ample storage on either side, from floor to ceiling, and there’s no sign of a laundry room at all. The master suite faces the front yard

HOMESTYLE and is flanked by a lovely covered porch. The casual yet elegant master bath features a deep soaking tub, a double vanity with sandstone counters and large walk-in shower. Not knowing how long they’d live in the home, it was important for the couple to have the laundry and master bed and bath to be on the first floor. It was important to know that they could live on the first floor as they aged. Upstairs there are two more bedrooms, each with their own style, a full bath, a small sitting room with Barry’s mother’s recovered Victorian furniture and a mini private closet-office. It is a sensible little space for a visit and an ample space for just the right amount of office. The thought process was to hide the desk, computer, mail and clutter behind the closed doors of the closet without using an entire room for a home-office. It works well. Just across the side porch is the 2-car garage with a studio apartment above. It’s equipped with a small kitchen, a full bath and another large, open and airy

living area. The flooring is bamboo and the furnishings are casual and tasteful making it an ideal space for guests or live-ins. The couple’s favorite spaces are the sunroom and the open living/kitchen area where Barry can cook and still have conversation with guests. If you ask Mitzi, her favorite spot is the large soaking tub in the master bath, which is her spa area after a long day. I believe my favorite part of the home is the diverse art collection. It varies from modern pieces to intricately detailed paintings and pairs nicely with their collaborative eclectic decorating style. The couple likes color and started collecting a mix of colorful pieces and received a wonderful bit of advice from a gallery owner and friend that they’ve applied to their home. They let the walls be the backdrop with neutral colors and let the art be the color of the room. Pull color from the art into the room with pillows, rugs, window treatments and other items. Ultimately, you have to love it all.

“Art is something that you need to love” For example, what would typically be an area for a breakfast nook became a spot to have coffee, sip on a drink and to just be comfortable in a large shabby chic chair finished with chalk paint and covered in a beautifully delicate blue fabric. It just works and it’s this eclectic mix of art and color that makes this cottage a gorgeous representation of beauty and romance.

sitting on the floor. Its not stuffy.” When asked what kind of advice he’d offer someone building his or her first home, Barry suggests feeling very comfortable with your builder and know that you can trust him/her. Take the time to really work through the plan of the house and make

sure that it fits your lifestyle as far as the size of the spaces, the traffic flow and try to think beyond right now. Don’t just think about this year and next year, especially if you’re young. Chances are your situation will change and a home is a more permanent thing so, try to build something that will adapt or will be easy to make changes to, as your life changes. But, ultimately, knowing your builder

and feeling comfortable with him or her is the most important. HEALTH

And They Call it Puppy Love!

A Puppy A Day Keeps The Doctor Away STORY BY: LESLIE RESCHLY BSN,RN

I

find myself in this state of emotion with the recent new member of our family, a black Labrador Retriever Puppy! With an empty nest, I now am toilet - training and walking in my yard all hours of the day or night. And I am happy! Nuts maybe... but Happy!

than their non-dog counterparts. Pets have been found to improve human cardiovascular health through decreased heart rates, blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels which overall may decrease your risk of heart attack. One article I read even suggested that those individuals who were dog owners were more likely to be alive after a heart attack! That dog will force you to engage in activity from walking, jogging or hiking to agility training and water sports. We all know the benefits of exercise including decreased stress levels! Some research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison suggests pet presence in the home has been linked to children less likely to have allergies by 33%. This would include asthma and skin eczema. In addition, children raised with pets have benefited from decreased anxiety and the presence of a source of comfort in the animal within their home. Currently, approximately 2/3 of the households in the USA own at least one pet. Emotionally, we have all heard of the benefits of Pet Therapy in institutionalized settings such as nursing homes. Pets have also been used to relieve distress of cancer patients with pain, soothe the effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and provide companionship to Alzheimer’s patients and the elderly. In fact, those individuals suffering from depression and mental illness benefit from a pet as a “reason to get up” each day. If you need a motivation to begin an exercise program, consider a dog as a way to lose or maintain your weight. People responsible for walking pets have been found to be less likely to be obese. One friend of mine is helping an elderly neighbor by walking his dog regularly. Finally, a good dog may even get you a date with the person of your dreams! Having a pet leads to socialization and interaction with other pet owners at dog parks, walks

and events. A dog is a conversation starter for many interactions and is known to be a matchmaker comparable to match.com! So, this New Year’s Day will find me with my puppy Macy underfoot, snuggling or walking, intercepting shoes and objects she is determined to chew on and making repeated trips outside to prevent accidents! And I will be Happy! A Happy and Healthy 2016 to you and your favorite pet! 1

Sadie with Macy

I’m so happy that my husband has nicknamed our little addition “Puppy Prozac”. Actually, he is very happy too! Having had a chocolate lab that raised our three children before passing on to dog heaven, at the age of 14, we not only had a childless nest, we had a pet-less nest for over 1 year. Sporadic visits of our grand-dogger Sadie helped to reinforce my decision to search for another pet. The health benefits of pet ownership are well documented. Although many of you have unconventional pets such

as birds, rodents and snakes (EEK!), most research and reporting has been conducted around cats and dogs. The main benefits noted by those studying man’s best friends first focus on the fact that animals give unconditional love providing companionship, alleviation of loneliness and a boost to mood. They provide a sense of purpose to an owner as they have needs for food, exercise and play. Speaking of exercise, it has been proven that dog owners do get more exercise

They have tough days; maybe they were busy barking at the neighbors leaf blower or chasing the vacuum cleaner around the living room. They deserve to relax with a cold beer, too! Yes, you heard me right Beer for dogs! Why not? They are a part of our families. For most of us, they are our best friends!

There is a company out of Seattle called 3 Busy Dogs and they make some tasty brew for our K-9 friends. It’s called Bowser Beer. There are three flavors to choose from: Beefy Brown Ale, Cock-a-Doodle Brew, and Porky Pug Porter. Yes, I’m serious. No, I’m not kidding… I thought this was so interesting. I did some research because I don’t want to just give my best friends any ole thing… This is what I found - 3 Busy Dogs is a company that cares about our animals. They know what is good for them and what is not. Did you know that hops are toxic to dogs? Well, they do, so they don’t put hops, at all, in their beer. Also, they use only real USDA beef, chicken, or pork and no flavorings. They add malt barley (full of B-vitamins) for shiny coats and also add Glucosamine for

joint health. They don’t add is yeast, which causes the fermentation that creates the alcohol and carbonation. They also stay away from salt or onions that are normally found in processed broth. This is a good thing because, in case you didn’t know, onions are bad for dogs. So while you may find it strange to give a dog some beer, this beer is good for Fido. It will keep him hydrated and make him feel special! And he can still walk a straight line! It is exactly what he deserves after an exhausting day of guarding the house from the mailman or gossiping with the other neighborhood pets about Fifi’s new haircut. When you go on their website, Bowserbeer.com, you will find the three different flavors to please your dogs discerning pallet (I use that word loosely). I enjoyed reading the descriptions of the different flavors. They definitely have a sense of humor! And get this – You can design your own labels! How cool would it be to have your own dog and own name on the label?? Imagine what a great gift it would be for the dog lover in your life. Admit it, we all know someone who would love this!!!

Now, I’m sure you can picture, having a Bowser Beer tasting is a little less stately than a champagne tasting. The participants are sloppy. The feedback is lacking. It takes an observant person to determine the results of the sampling. If we had to rank the results we would need to use a scale of 1 to 10; 1 equaling the clean water bowl in the kitchen (low) and 10 equaling the water in the flowerpot on the back deck (high). Every dog has his or her own preferences. The web site actually offers serving suggestions. Such as pouring it over dry food or freezing it into cubes, that the dogs can lick. The possibilities are endless and that is what I like best about Bowser Beer! It’s just one more way to thank our furry friends for always being there for us! Cheers to your best friend and mine!!1

eliz Ano Nuevo, translates to Happy New Year in Spanish. San Felipe Mexican Restaurant in Southport has a lot to be happy about, celebrating 15 years and most recently, a second location in Southport. “Both locations feature the same menu, with best sellers including, fajitas, chimichangas, and quesadillas: rice and refried beans, con queso dip and guacamole, and the seafood dishes are very popular” adds Ayala. When one thinks of Mexican dining almost simultaneously one thinks of Margaritas, served frozen or on the rocks with salt,

Both locations feature the same menu, with Locals and visitors to the area are familiar with San Felipe Mexican Restaurant near the Lowes Foods on Long Beach Road. The cozy restaurant is warm and inviting with terracotta colored stucco walls, arched stone accents and colorful paintings, depicting bright blue exotic waters and far away landscapes. You’ll enjoy toe tapping Mexican music in the background, that takes one to a world south of the border. The wait staff is prompt and energetic, with what can seem like an endless supply of chips and salsa. Owner/Manager, Cesar Ayala has been with this family-owned business for years. First starting out in Fayetteville, NC, with Monterrey’s Mexican Restaurant, and then branching out to open San Felipe Mexican Restaurant in Southport in 2000. The restaurant was named after the small town where the family is from in Mexico. San Felipe is located near Guadalajara and about three hours from Mexico City. Southport was the first San Felipe Mexican Restaurant, now there are fourteen in North and South Carolina including the newest second location in Southport at the Wal-Mart plaza. Ayla is manager of both locations, and said when the space came available, San Felipe took the opportunity to better serve the growing community, opening in February of 2015.

SanFelipe has a wide selection of tequilas: Patron, 1800, don Julio. “It’s a lesser known but very good tequila: Cazadores from Jalisco, Mexico region, made from one hundred percent blue agave.” Ayala points out. The cantina also has a wide variety of cervezas, including a selection of Mexican beers, Corona, dos Equis, Modelo Especial, Tecate,Victoria and Sol. Looking for a fun festive place to celebrate a birthday dinner? San Felipe is known for celebrating a feliz cumpleanos with enthusiastic clapping and singing, accompanied with the huge showmanship of the big, velvet, gold braided, decorated sombrero - a most fitting birthday hat, “it’s a tradition”, states Ayala. Another tradition is the Mariachi music. San Felipe Mexican Restaurant provides guests with the opportunity to enjoy traditional Mariachi Music, a selection of Mexican folk music with a variety of musical styles, performed in authentic style and dress. The musical group comes from Greensboro performing at the Lowes Food location on the second Tuesday of the month, and performing at the Wal-Mart plaza location the last Friday of the monthtimes for both are 6pm-8:30pm. his may be politically incorrect, but our dog, Ozzy, loves duck treats. It was the only treat he would eat and, for some reason, they are hard to come by now. In an effort to find something to solve my treat dilemma, I decided to try making some homemade doggie treats. There are many benefits to making your own dog treats at home: You control what goes into the recipe without adding unhealthy additives that are in many brands of commercial dog treats.

I went through several recipes until I found one he likes. Now, I make a big batch and keep a spare batch in the freezer. I hope your furry friends will like these too!
