CURRENTS Six Month Closure

Local businesses share their thoughts STORY BY LISA STITES (PHOTO - TOWN OF OAK ISLAND)

T

he G.V. Barbee Bridge to Oak Island needs repairs, and will be closed from mid-October until just before Easter in April 2019. Drivers will not be able to access Oak Island on the east end, and will have to use the Swain’s Cut Bridge at Midway Road, Middleton Boulevard during the estimated six-month closure.

While area towns and Brunswick County have been working out details on how to avoid any disruption in services, especially emergency services, many business owners are making plans to survive the lean months the altered traffic patterns are sure to bring. Once the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) announced the news of the planned bridge work and closure, the Southport-Oak Island Chamber of Commerce began making plans to help the business community prepare, said Karen Sphar, Executive Vice-president for the Chamber. The Chamber has put together a campaign proclaiming that “It’s Worth the Drive,” which it hopes will help businesses keep local shoppers. Starting in November, there will be a chance every month the bridge is closed for shoppers to qualify for a chance to win a $100 drawing just by bringing in receipts from 10 local businesses. The Chamber has been holding seminars regularly, covering topics such as online marketing and merchandising. Typically, the Chamber, as a member-driven organization, focuses its efforts on Chamber members. But Sphar said they’re working with non-member businesses as well, in an effort to help the business community as a whole. The Chamber also has an email list it will use to share information on specials local businesses are running. There is already a Facebook page dedicated to the “It’s Worth the Drive” campaign, and a website (www.itsworththedrive.com), with planning information for businesses and details on the Passport drawings for consumers. Some businesses are considering local deliveries, while others might provide employees with gas cards. “We’ve tried to make it as easy on the business and the consumers as possible,” Sphar said. “But it is also up to the busi-

The business community has to make it worth their (the customers’) effort.” While the extra distance will likely keep customers from making the trip, area businesses and the Chamber of Commerce hope to convince customers that it is worth the drive to continue shopping locally. “People are going to readjust their patterns,” Sphar said. “My hope is that they don’t readjust them forever, just the six months.” Another new idea the Chamber will implement is a takeoff of the popular Carpool Karaoke show. With the Chamber’s version, local celebrities will ride along with Chamber representatives, and they’ll drive home the “It’s Worth the Drive” theme, taking the long way around to a featured shop or restaurant. “I know it’s going to be an inconvenience for some people,” Sphar said of the bridge closure. “But I am hoping people will look at it as a story they can tell later, go with the flow and continue to support our business and have fun with it,” Sphar said. Human nature being what is will also likely affect how residents shop and eat out while the bridge is closed, Sphar predicted. But if people really want a particular item or to eat at a certain restaurant, that’s what they’ll do even if they have to take a longer route to get there.

“If you’re having a hankering for a doughnut from Scoops, you’re going to go get a doughnut from Scoops,” she said. “If you’re feeling like a Fishy Fishy night, you’re going to go. We’re hoping they support the business community that way.” Bobbie Blackmon, owner of The Confectionary on Long Beach Road, is one of many business owners hoping the same thing. “We’re going to go from 10,000 cars going by to a dead-end street,” Blackmon said. “But there’s nothing you can really do about it, except pray.” Besides operating the storefront bakery, Blackmon also does catering, fills orders for baked goods and sells specialty cakes, so she’s counting on that side of the business to sustain her during the lean months. She said she doesn’t really know what to expect, though she believes she’ll lose some of her steady customers to another one of several bakeries in the area as people stay on their side of the bridge.

pray.”

Blackmon said she really just doesn’t know what to expect, however. The first day the bridge is closed, she won’t even know how to adjust the quants of goods she’ll bake in the morning. Everything she sells is perishable, so it’s not like she can pack it up and use it again. And it’s not just the business owners near the bridge who

CURRENTS are worried, she said, but in Southport, they are concerned they’ll lose customers to Shallotte and Leland when customers don’t want to deal with the increased traffic on N.C. 211. Some businesses, such as Coastline Insurance Associates of NC, Inc., have more than one location, and are better-placed to adjust. Jonathan Peele, President of the agency, said he’s more concerned about the effect on his employees. “Most of our employees live in Southport, so this will add a lot of time to their commute,” Peele said. “It will definitely be a big inconvenience for them.” Peele said he thinks they might actually see an increase in business, as he has offices on Port Loop Road and Oak Island Drive, both sides of the bridge. But he knows most business owners are concerned. “I think the business community is scared and praying for the best,” he said. “This is going to affect their bottom line.” Whatever plans business owners are making, Sphar said the important thing

“Although the bridge closure is a big inconvenience, I think it’s fair to say that we all want and need safe bridges,”

is that they do plan. They need to have a handle on who their customer base is. She said they should be compiling an email database, considering what extra expenses they may incur and preparing their customers on a positive note. An average of 12,000 cars uses the bridge daily, and Sphar said that if businesses only rely on drive-by traffic, they may need to reconsider that.

It’s not just the businesses and employees who have to adjust during the bridge closure though. Vendors, delivery services and service providers will all have to take into account the extra time needed to detour and the extra fuel costs. Towns have to be prepared as well. Cin Brochure, Mayor for the Town of Oak Island, said that as soon as Town manager David Kelly heard the news, he started working with staff to make sure the town was ready. Caswell Beach and Oak Island both rely on the Barbee Bridge, and Brochure said the two towns have been planning accordingly. Oak Island, for example, has plans to split staff and equipment between the South Harbour Station and the station in the east end of town, so the department can respond on and off the island. The police department has mutual aid plans in place with the Sheriff’s Office and surrounding municipalities to help respond to mainland calls. “We’ve prepared for it and have tried to

do everything we could to ease the pain,” Brochure said. “We were on top of it and so was Caswell Beach. We have worked as a team. It just goes to show that we are able to work together through anything.” Concerns aside, many are grateful that the work is being done. Sphar also gave NSDOT staff kudos for the way they’re handling the project. “They are working very hard to make this have as little impact as they can, and shortening that time,” Sphar said. “I have seen nothing but a responsive attitude from NCDOT.” Peele summed up the attitude many seem to be coming around to. “Although the bridge closure is a big inconvenience, I think it’s fair to say that we all want and need safe bridges,” he said.

US Open KMT is ON

The 40th anniversary of the tournament is set to be a big one! STORY BY AMI BROWN

T

his year marks the 40th King Mackerel Tournament and more than 400 boats are expected, again! Since the very first tournament there has been tremendous support by locals, anglers, sponsors and by-standers. The whole community comes out to watch and enjoy this event, scheduled for the first weekend in October - a nice kickoff to the fall fishing season.

Thirty-eight years ago a small group of community leaders met and decided that they needed an event to showcase the great fall fishing Southport-Oak Island area has to offer. The prizes and expenses for the first tournament were guaranteed by those community leaders signing a promissory note at a local financial institution - thus the U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament was born. The U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament now attracts almost

400 boats annually and is held in high esteem by the community and anglers. This year there will be music, plenty of food, and the boaters will be getting a swag bag valued at over $130. Karen Sphar , one of the Chamber organizers said, “We want to thank all the fishermen and supporters that make this such a great event. From the very first tournament back in 1979 (with 317 boats) there has been tremendous participation by anglers and the

community.” This is a tournament where everyone can compete, kids as well. There are so many prizes they can’t possibly be listed here. The winning fish takes home $25,000 but there are 55 places beyond first, then there are special categories, special sponsor prizes, aggregate prizes and even several tournaments within the tournament. The brochure this year is another stand out, 16 page full color book, with the history and all the information you want to

know, including all those prizes spelled out and the rules in detail. It can be downloaded from the website on the “registration” page. The weigh in is the highlight of watchers, but if you can’t make the tournament but still want to watch weighin live? October 5th - 2pm-5pm October 6th -2pm-4pm http://www.usopenkmtlive.com/

Military Appreciation A huge thank you to those who serve

F

rom what started out as a small event of gratitude has grown and spread across the region. September 8th is set aside for military families to enjoy a day out on the water and fishing fun.

The City of Southport has proclaimed September 8, 2018, to be Southport Military Appreciation Day (Southport MAD). This is an annual event which allows the community to show their support for our service members and families. Traditionally, the event takes the troops out on volunteer fishing boats, while entertaining their families at the Southport Marina. Late in the afternoon, when the troops return, a big family style picnic is provided with music and fun for everyone. MAD Southport, as Military Appreciation Day Southport/Oak Island is referred to, began in 2008 after the second year of MAD in Morehead City.

There were numerous people in the Southport/Oak Island area who wished to take troops fishing and show their support for those who protect our freedoms, but were unable to make it to Morehead City for various reasons. The MAD Board of Directors looked at the area and saw that there was support for the event and agreed to work with the local supporters to make it happen and set the date for October. The first MAD Southport captains meeting was held at Bill Smith Park in Oak Island and many opportunities for improvement were noted, including holding the meeting where we would not have to cook having

the area lit by headlights. Since that rainy first year, MAD Southport has continued to grow, not only in support but in the number of troops taken out and the number of volunteer boats. After holding the event in Oak Island and using different locations to support the activities, MAD Southport was moved to its current location at Southport Marina. The Marina location has allowed for all of the activities to take place at one location without having to move everyone around.

MAD Starts its 13th Year Hosting our Nation’s Heroes! With events scheduled in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, Military Appreciation Day will once again provide a day of fishing, food and fun for Military Families and of course it remains completely free of charge for active duty military, guard, reservists and their families! Our all-volunteer organization and donors from across the country will provide meals, family activities, fishing and entertainment to over 2000 guests this year making our 13th year our best ever! MAD 2018 Tidewater will be held on August 25 MAD 2018 Southport will be held on September 8 MAD 2018 Charleston will be held October 13 General Volunteer Registration is open, Boat Volunteer Registration is open and Troop Registration is open. Pirates Celebrate!

Stede Bonnet 300 year anniversary party plunders into Southport STORY BY KASS FINCHER

O

n the weekend of September 21st, “all things pirate” will storm into Southport. The Martime Museum, in association with the City of Southport, is hosting a series of events to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the “Battle of the Sandbars,” when the infamous pirate Stede Bonnet was captured near Battery Island. For the pirate-uninformed, Stede Bonnet, otherwise known as the “gentleman pirate,” left his wife and four children, and a comfortable life as a Barbados sugar plantation owner, to join the pirate ranks in 1717. Though he knew nothing about seafaring, he managed to hire a 70-man crew who did, and he secured a boat, the Revenge, to begin capturing merchant boats. Over time, in addition to his captures, he was known for his cruelty to insubordinate crew members; he tied them to the mast, abandoned them on desolate islands, and even made them walk the plank. Given his reputation, Bonnet quickly became infamous among his pirate brethren along the Atlantic and Caribbean coasts. Word of his reputation had even reached Edward Teach – aka Blackbeard, whom he met on a journey to the Virgin Islands. Blackbeard talked Bonnet into joining him, and together they captured several vessels on the way. But over time, Blackbeard was unimpressed with Bonnet’s lack of seamanship, and eventually took over his boat. Convincing Bonnet to go ashore at Bath and surrender to the governor of North Carolina, Blackbeard made off with all the loot and left Bonnet in shame. Governor Eden – whom some historians claim was in cahoots with the pirates – pardoned Bonnet, but the pirate soul in the man was not to be extinguished. Under a different name and with a different vessel, Bonnet continued his piracy and captured other boats. Sailing from Delaware to the Carolinas, they stopped near what is now Battery Island to clean the boat’s hull. Colonel William Rhett of Charles Towne (now Charleston) had heard of the pirates’ location and came up to try to capture them. Unfortunately his boat ran aground

and they had to await rising tides before approaching the Bonnet vessels, which over the hours ran aground as well. The fight began, with gunfire between the ships lasting four hours. But surprisingly, Bonnet eventually surrendered to the Colonel. Awaiting trial in Charles Towne, Bonnet escaped with a crew member but was captured again at Sullivan’s Island. Despite his pleas for mercy, even offering to be a menial servant to the Governor, Bonnet was convicted and hanged in December of 1718. Stede Bonnet was not satisfied with a life of ease; he had yearned for adventure, danger and plunder on the open seas. His piracy had lasted just more than a year, but Bonnet’s legacy lives on in Southport. Southport’s Commemoration will offer not just educational events, but entertainment as well. It kicks off on Friday Sep-

tember 21, with the “Gentleman Pirate’s Dinner” from 5:30 – 8:00 p.m. at the Community Building. Tickets are now on sale at the Maritime Museum – $40 for one, or $400 to sponsor a table of eight (with your own personal pirate joining the table). The Caribbean dinner, catered by Coastal Catering, will include dinner and one drink; a cash bar will also be offered. Music by the Sea Pans Steel Drum Ensemble will complete the vibe. The featured speaker for the evening is Dr. Virginia Lunsford of the U. S. Naval Academy, who’s a renowned expert on what’s called the “Golden Age of Piracy,” from 1570-1730. She will explain how piracy became a culture in itself, with crew sharing in both the violence and the profit from their exploits. On Saturday and Sunday, there will be vendors, food trucks and many hands-on, free public activities on the Fort Johnston lawn. On Saturday, the Tricentennial Living History Program, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., will offer three tents hosted by “pirate crews,” who will perform reenactments and lead activities like knot-tying, cannon demonstrations and sail navigation. The kids will enjoy ring toss games and face painting. On Sunday, from 12 to 4 p.m., the reen-

actment of the Battle of the Sandbars and Bonnet’s Trial will be narrated by Jack Fryar, local historian and author of “Pirates of the North Carolina Coast.” His tales should not be missed. Katy Menne, the Maritime Museum’s Curator of Education, and Lori Sanderlin, the Museum Manager, are heading up the weekend’s events. They add that this is the “Year of the Pirate” in North Carolina; a traveling exhibit featuring Blackbeard’s notorious adventures will also come to Southport for the month of December. Though we often romanticize the age of piracy, these events will help us learn more about who they really were and how they operated. Katy and Lori want the whole community to come out, learn and enjoy the weekend’s activities. “Whether you’re a kid or a kid at heart,” says Lori, we want everyone to know that all the events on Saturday and Sunday are appropriate for all ages. We want to make sure everybody is interested, educated and entertained.” It’s been 300 years since the pirates hid out on our coast. Come out and learn about them, and have some fun too!

Cheers

Summery Shandies Juicy beers that hit the spot in the sun STORY AND PHOTO BY JEFF STITES

I

had the idea to send the last days of summer off with a Cheers column about shandys, summery mixture of beer and, traditionally, lemonade. It seemed to me that last year they were all the rage with seemingly every little brewery making some variation on the beer and fruit juice thing. But as I went looking for samples to try I found precious few.

I picked up a variety of beers with fruit in them, but only one real shandy. Well, actually it was a radler, but we’ll get into that later. Then I went about researching shandys and was struck with a wonderful (I think) idea. As it turns out, shandys and radlers are the same thing in all real aspects. Both are mixed drinks made with half beer and half fruit juice, and sometimes with something a little extra tossed in for fun. Shandys came from England and radlers from Germany. Radler is the term for a bicyclist in German and they came up with the idea to give cyclists something to drink that wouldn’t get them too tipsy. Because God forbid a German drink, you know, water. They are quite the civilized bunch. Anyhow, I was reminded of my exploration of sangria last month. Shandys are the beer version of sangria so why not do the same thing and try to make a couple shandys of my own? I’m going to use Mexican lagers (because they say summer to me and also, why not?) and try a traditional lemonade version with a twist and also play to the Mexican angle and make a shandy with lime-ade as well. We’ll see how it goes. But first, let’s see how the professionals do it.

OWL’S BREW RADLER WICKED WATERMELON

3.8% ABV 10 IBU The Label Says: When we first batched up our refreshing double brew we were amazed by its robust and eminently quaffable flavor. We imagined people imbibing our summer breeze of a beverage. We thought of outdoor concerts…days on boats…and those wintry hours when all you want is to sip some sunshine. Then we remembered the Radler, a beer style invented in 1922 for cyclists: a bold flavor but easy enough that following a tipple, the bikers didn’t topple. Our premi-

um blend is an homage to inventor Franz Kugler’s flavorful and sessionable vision. My Take: Wow. Someone’s can blurb writer is paid by the word, don’t you think? And I promise you all right now, you will never read the words “quaffable” or “sessionable” in this column unless I’m quoting someone else. This stuff is strange. After pouring it, I wondered if I shouldn’t have shaken the can up first. The liquid has an odd color that gets deeper and darker as you reach the bottom of the can. There is a bit of sludge. I suppose that is to be expected as what we’re drinking here is beer and white tea with watermelon juice added. I figured why not test out the idea that a shandy or radler can be made with anything, right? I’ll admit I had my reservations, but honestly this brew is delicious. There is a strong aroma that comes off the glass as soon as you pour it and it pretty much matches up perfectly with the taste. So you’ll know if this is something you are likely to enjoy right off the bat. The tea and beer mix wonderfully, probably because it’s white tea and as such doesn’t over power the light beer. The watermelon provides just a bit of extra sweetness.

I could drink this stuff all day. Now that I know this sort of weirdness works, I’m going to try to mix some up myself.

DOS EQUIS SPECIAL LAGER LIME SHANDY

I figured I’d pair Dos Equis with lime because I like to put a slice of lime in it anyway. It seemed like a natural match. It was. I used pretty much exactly (though I didn’t measure) half lager and half limeade in a pint glass with a slice of lime for garnish, because I’m fancy. This wasn’t as complex as the Owl’s brew, but it was every bit as delicious. The lime-ade isn’t terribly sweet, so I think that helped make this really smooth. I could drink these one after another. That could be good or bad, now that I think about it.

TECATE ORIGINAL LEMON-PEACH SHANDY

Tecate is about the most affordable Mexican import out there. I’ve heard it referred to as the PBR of Mexico, in fact. That isn’t an insult, by the way. Tecate is fine beer. I just don’t like it as much as Dos Equis, so I decided to use Tecate for my more experimental shandy. For this one I went with the same half and half lager and juice mix, this time using lemonade. As a little something extra, I put in about a quarter cup of peach brandy. I thought that since adding liquor to sangria was a good idea, surely it would work with a shandy as well. It worked even better than I’d hoped! The peach flavor added a bit of depth to the lemon and this ended up being my favorite concoction of the evening. What’s the takeaway here? Go experiment yourself. Whether you prefer beer or wine, the sky is the limit with radlers,

Southport Magazine 2016-2017 SOI Chamber Small Business of the Year Winner

shandys and sangrias. Mix and match to your hearts’ content and do so safe in the knowledge that fruit is good for you, so really you’re kind of being healthy. See? Win-win.

Restoring History

Art Beat John & Lisa Strazza

A fine eye for fine art restoration STORY & PHOTOS BY CARLA EDSTROM

S

everal years ago, I found a ton of old forgotten family pictures stashed inside a desk drawer at my mom’s house. Most of the pictures were of my older siblings and my parents. But many were really old photos of people I have never seen before. I asked my mom if I could have them and she ended up giving me more boxes of photos and albums she had collected. Unfortunately, many of them were damaged in some way. Some of the photos I found were from the mid to late 1800’s during a time when people didn’t get very many photos of themselves taken if any. Sometimes we forget that there was a time in history where we didn’t have the luxury of taking endless photos with our smartphones. backings, patches or fine stitching of the It’s so important to preserve that history of a time when not everything rip. In painting, the art of re-painting an area that is missing is where the most finewas a quick snap chat or a group selfie.

John and Lisa Strazza, owners of Strazza Art Restoration of Southport, know first hand the importance of protecting historical art and photographs for future generations. Being a professional street photographer currently on hiatus, John uses his mad photography skills and years of expertise to restore damaged photos, while Lisa is a professional fine artist who is highly trained in art restoration. They have both spent their careers centered around art, creating and honing their respective art forms and staying active in the art world as gallery owners in the Hudson Valley, NY. And the combination of their talents and experiences has made a perfect mix in both of their art pursuits, their art restoration business and in their life together. “Lisa and I have worked together, and we keep each other true to our art, without compromising it to lesser concerns,” explains John. “With this approach, we find that our paintings and our photographs connect far more deeply with our viewers. Maybe it’s because we are most excited about our best works; works that are made with clarity, and maturity,” said John. And Lisa agrees. “Although John and I encourage each other in all that we do, we never let the other compromise on the quality of our work. As they say, ‘Iron sharpens iron’ we constantly critique each other’s work and hold each other to a higher standard, always striving for excellence in all that we do,” she explained. And it is evident in their outstanding work. Having good honest feedback about your art is invaluable to the growth of an artist. A chance meeting at a concert end-

ed up being the serendipitous event that brought the two together. “We actually met at an outdoor river festival concert, where John was singing,” Lisa explained. “He was at that time a singer songwriter signed to an indie record label. We didn’t say more than a hello at that concert, but it was a memorable hello that prompted us both to return to the same festival the following year. John performed the following year at the festival and this time I bought John’s music CD and we talked. I contacted him about a year later and we began to write back and forth. It took a long time, but eventually it brought our lives together. And as most people that know us now will tell you… we are pretty much together and inseparable most of the time,” said Lisa. Although Lisa does the actual painting restorations and John the photos, they are so skilled at working together and helping each other that their restoration projects are a dual effort. “We approach each piece with an open frame of mind and test it thoroughly before proceeding,” explains John. “For instance, we have many ways and cleaning solvents with which we can clean a painting. Our aim is to test what works, so we can use the mildest method for that particular painting while keeping the integrity of the original work,” he explained. “Also, one color may clean with one agent, and another color in the same painting could get wiped out. So we have to remain careful in every part of the painting, with no assumptions as to what works. It can be, and often is, laborious, but in the end worth the trouble,” said John. “Fixing rips in a painting requires new canvas

ness is needed. The colors and style of painting need to be matched as well,” he said. “Lisa is a master artist and colorist, and that’s one of the reasons people come to her. The goal is not to make the painting look brand new, but to make it look what we call, ‘age appropriate,’ well preserved and clean to last for generations to come.” The painting restorations are just a natural continuation of Lisa’s artwork. “Twenty years into her art career, Lisa started to apprentice with master restoration artists for several years and became involved with high end restorations for corporations and private clients as well as major churches in NY, NJ and Washington DC”, said John. Although she studied Abstract Art at the Pan Art Institute, Lisa describes her current work as painterly and impressionistic. “I have used many mediums but recently I have focused on oil painting,” said Lisa. “I love the old school and traditional methods that I use in restoration which tend to influence my own artwork,” she said. “I am loving Southport and the surrounding areas. The marshes and local scenery here have become some of my favorite painting subjects,” she said. You can see Lisa’s new work on display in September at Ricky Evans Gallery, 211 N. Howe Street in Southport. The show is called Southern Impressionism and features some of her amazing regional paintings from Charleston and the low country. In addition to their restoration talents, John and Lisa also do reproductions for other local artists. They can photograph original art so the artists can have their artwork on digital file, enabling them to get high quality prints made of their work. This

is especially helpful for large artworks that cannot be scanned. To reach them about a restoration and to see more of their amazing painting, photography and before and after restoration pictures, go to their website at www.strazzagallery.com. Lisa also works at Ricky Evans Gallery where you can talk to her in person and see her amazing paintings on display.

History Kids Play Back in the Day Old school yard games still popular today

Make us your Southport NC destination for Home Furnishings Consignment

STORY BY KASS FINCHER

W

e all have fond memories of what many of us thought was the best part of each school day – recess. Though playground activities have certainly changed over the years, every parent would support the fact that children need some down time and physical activity during the course of the school day. Historians believe that the concept of recess originated in the early 1800s, when strict behavior was enforced in the classroom but rough-and-tumble play was allowed outside. The ground around the one-room schoolhouses was often completely worn down from the children’s play. A number of games from the past that involved simple props, or none at all, endure to this day. Here are a few classic traditional games that can be enjoyed still, with reminders on how they are played and historians’ best estimates on when and where they originated.

HIDE AND SEEK

We’ve all played this one, probably starting with our parents when we were small. One person is “it” and, after closing his or her eyes and counting to 10 or 100, has to try to find the hiders. Historians think this game dates back to 2nd century Greece, and was made very popular in Elizabethan England. References to it are made in several Shakespearean plays.

HOPSCOTCH

This one requires a bit of coordination, a chalk and a stone. You draw the grid, toss the stone on a square in the hopscotch grid, jump over it, hop to the end of the grid and come back. Many believe this originated in Roman-ruled England, where the courses were 100 feet long and the soldiers practiced this as a way to build agility while wearing full armor. That most definitely would build up your troops!

JACKS

Here’s another need for coordination, along with some jacks and a rubber ball. You scatter the jacks and try to pick up some before the ball bounces again. As old as ancient Greece, when the players used small sheep bones and rocks, throughout most of history it was called “Knucklebones.”

MARBLES

Though many variations on this game are played, usually it starts with a circle and marbles placed in the middle. The player tries to knock out marbles with his or her own large marble. Marbles have been found in ancient Egyptian tombs and Aztec ruins. The game we know today was popularized in the early 20th century, when children could buy bags of colorful marbles for pennies.

KICK THE CAN

A variation of tag and hide and seek, the player named “it” counts to a number and then tries to find the other players. Those tagged are “captured,” and any uncaptured player who kicks the can gets to release those captured. Since kicking the can delays the resolution of the game, perhaps this is where we derived the term “kicking the can down the road,” meaning delaying a decision.

CAPTURE THE FLAG

Two teams compete to try to capture each other’s flag, tagging enemy players and sending them to “jail.” This game comes from the belief in many military cultures that the battle has not been won until they capture the enemy’s flag. In the Civil War in this country, color guards were formally assigned to guard their regimental flag, many times risking their lives in the process.

SIMON SAYS

Centuries old, originating in ancient Rome, the translation of the Latin name of this game is “Cicero says do this.” When the widely-regarded statesman Cicero said to do something, you did it. Even standing on one leg, perhaps. The game requires everyone to do what Simon says, or they are kicked out. No one knows when Cicero became known as Simon.

RED ROVER

Originating in the United Kingdom in the 19th century, this game requires two teams locking arms and forming a line. They then call out for one of the other line’s players to break through, saying “Red Rover,Red Rover, send (player’s name) right over.” Deemed too rough by some in the last 20 years, many school systems have banned the game from being played on their grounds today.

KICKBALL

Invented in Cincinnati in 1917, this game became very popular in schoolyards shortly thereafter. Although many variations exist, many of the rules are similar to baseball. Because it requires few skills, it’s popular still with younger children. In full disclosure, I have to admit my recess periods in the first grade were sometimes a bit scary. Because I was the smallest person in my class, I was often picked last for Red Rover, and I was usually the first target for the dreaded Dodgeball game. I still bear scars (jk). But outside play remains an important part of the school day. The North Carolina Board of Education requires physical education classes, and also at least 30 minutes of recess each day for K-8th grade students. It is well documented that our more sedentary lifestyles, not to mention electronic device diversions, have both contributed to childhood obesity. The American Academy of Pediatrics claims that recess, or “unstructured physical activity and play” for elementary students provides not only physical benefits, but also social, emotional, cognitive and academic benefits. In a time when many children are stressed and overly programmed thanks to standardized testing, competitive sports and travel teams, perhaps a return to simple playground games can play a new role. Healthy and happy children make happy parents and happy families.

Biz Q&A

More than Clothes

FUN QUESTIONS:

What is your favorite TV show? Football, Hockey and Baseball games I’m a jock at heart. I also like Flea Market Flip and good quality movies.

Deborah’s Place; a must stop boutique shop

If you could own any luxury clothing item … what would it be? I really can’t think of a thing unless I can wrap myself in a Jaguar.

STORY BY AMI BROWN

D

eborah and Frank opened Deborah’s place in 2012, and are loving every minute of it. From pillows to scarfs to jewelry, everything you need for that special gift or a girl’s day out shopping. Do you have anything new or exciting you want to tell us about? Well, after twenty years in retail we are still alive. We’ve just brought in a new line of Jewelry, plus Frank is always bringing in new types of air plants and we’ve started making a lot more handmade items out of reclaimed materials. It’s always fun to mix things up and we plan to carry more gifts and jewelry.

Frank loves these AIR PLANTS, no soil needed.

When Did You Open Deborah’s Place? We started Deborah’s Place in 2003 in Fredericksburg, VA. Then we moved to the Southport area in 2010 and opened Deborah’s Place in March of 2012. Did you have a background in fashion or retail? Yes I have worked in retail since I was in high school, including a florist shop, a candle shop and a Ladies boutique but I learned the most in a country home décor store. We opened our first store in December of 1997 and have been in business since (except, for a short break while we looked for the right location in Southport).

What makes Deborah’s Place stand out from the other Southport shops? That’s a tough question to answer, I shop a lot and try to find the best prices and pass them on to our Customers. I strive to have something for everyone no matter what their budget is. I also hope it’s our great customer service, fantastic selection and awesome music that we play. We like to have fun. I Love your variety of scarfs…are those really a year round accessory? Tell us more. Yes they are; you can wear them in a million and one ways. Just to have a pop of color around your neck or tie them to make a vest which can be worn with shorts, capris, slacks, skirts or as a bathing suit cover up and it’s so easy to do. The Jewelry is beautiful…do you use local artisans or artists?

Owners, Frank & Deborah

It is really a mix of both local, U.S. and artisans from around the world. It’s my favorite thing to buy so you will definitely be seeing more of it. Plus we are now carrying a line for men. Who is your typical customer? Women of all ages, tourists, children and anyone looking for that special gift. Tell us about the home décor section, those printed pillows are adorable. I’m pillow possessed! I’m always changing out my pillows at home. Frank thinks I have a problem, Maybe but who cares. I love nature so I always have floral, bird, coastal and animal themed pillows. Also a lot of them are made in NC. We also have a large selection of unique garden and wall décor.

What is the most amazing place you have ever visited and where is the one place you would really like to go? As a child my father worked for the department of interior, so I was lucky enough to see so many of our National parks. Those memories I will always treasure. I like to go to Maine. I love it up there it feels like home, except I wouldn’t do so well in the Winter its way too cold for me.

Open Mon thru Sat 10-5 and Sun 12-5 year round except on special occasions, like when we go to Maine.

What is your favorite part of the business? Buying! I love to shop for the store. I’ve been buying for other people as long as I can remember. As a kid my parents would give me the money to buy the presents for everyone. It wasn’t until I was forty and a light bulb went off, I’ve been doing this my whole life; this is what I’m supposed to do. I wish it had hit me at twenty! Quirky tea towels make the perfect gift to box up, for just about anyone, from college kids to grand parents. (to right)

Are you from Southport or did you move here? Why? We lived in Fredericksburg VA for over twenty years and moved to this area in 2010. It was time to downsize due to Frank’s health issues, we were familiar with Wilmington from visiting Frank’s family who lived there and we would always come over to Southport. The small town charm of Southport drew us to this area plus no more stairs, no more SNOW, no more I-95 and who wouldn’t want to live near the ocean. What are some of your best sellers? Ladies Accessories, Jewelry, Purses, Tea Towels and Air Plants (which are Frank’s babies).

What is number one on your bucket list? Hang gliding it would be so cool to fly.

These super trendy mixed metal sets are the perfect fall accessory. A new line that is flying off the shelf!

Adorable pillows with matching decor, you can tell Deborah loves animals! Plenty of beachy ones too.

Homemade Ice Cream

Chuck & Deb know how to do dairy, delicious! STORY BY KASS FINCHER

“Today was good, today was fun. Tomorrow is another one.” --Doctor Seuss.

A

nd what better way to have fun than to enjoy a scoop of ice cream at Chuck’s Homemade Ice Cream on Long Beach Road in Southport? Glancing at the names and ingredients of each concotion, it’s apparent that owner/ice cream maker Chuck Geisel inherited some of the same creative genes his third cousin, Theodor Seuss Geisel, aka Doctor Seuss, enjoyed.

Chuck and Deb Geisel opened Chuck’s Homemade Ice Cream shop in August of last year. But they have been in the industry for many years, starting in New Jersey in 1969 where Chuck worked at the Welsh Farms Dairy. “I worked every job, eventually becoming a taste tester for the company,” Chuck explains. “Then I got into sales and learned how to do the formulations. I

worked there for 20 years; late in my career I was designing stores and teaching people how to make ice cream.” After the dairy closed in 1985, Chuck began working in sales for the Taylor Company – a large manufacturer of soft-serve machines for all the fast food chains – in Rockton, Illinois. One of his clients was McDonalds, for whom he worked on new ice

cream concepts. Later Chuck and Deb moved to Mesquite, Nevada, where they liked the weather and small-town atmosphere. A businessman who was developing theaters there had approached Chuck about opening an ice cream shop in the front area of the cinema alongside a pizza restaurant and arcade. It seemed like a no-brainer,

given Chuck’s experience. But then in 2006 or so, the economy fell apart and everything stopped in Nevada. Construction of the theater was never completed, and though they had already purchased equipment, the couple’s plans for their own ice cream store had to be put on hold. The Geisels had been tested financial-

SAVOR ly, but the hardest tests were to come in 2009, when both Chuck and Deb developed cancer. In search of better medical options, they decided to move back east. The choice of where to live was not a longthought-out decision. “I drew a line on a map, found the halfway point between Florida and New Jersey, and that’s why we ended up in North Carolina,” Chuck laughs. “I asked Deb if she wanted to be at the ocean or the mountains; she said the ocean, so that’s why we’re here.” The Geisels sought the best medical treatment they could find, and thankfully they are now both cancer-free. “I was out of work for two years; we had to start over,” Chuck says. “So we decided to get into the wholesale ice cream business in 2011. Spikes in Southport was our first account. Now we have 15-20 accounts, from Swansboro all the way down to Myrtle Beach, in this area including Side Street Bakery in Southport, the Scoop Shop on Oak Island, the Scoop at Holden Beach.” Chuck and Deb credit their success to an unbending commitment to quality and service. Chuck makes about 1000 gallons a week at a separate building where he has more room and freezer capacity. He makes the ice cream every day, seven days a week, because he believes freshness is

a position where we can help other people facing personal challenges; that’s very rewarding.” Chuck adds, “We’d like to help other stores get started. Anyone that wants to open a store, we can help train them and get them set up. We like to help people.” Kudos to Deb and Chuck – and the scoops of flavor and friendship they share with a smile.

the key to quality. And Deb loads up the truck each day to make the deliveries to their accounts. “I love getting out,” she says, “making the deliveries and talking to our customers.” They had no plans to open their own retail store, Chuck says. “But then this place became available – it used to be a Subway. We didn’t have to do any renovation and got to keep all the furniture. Before we opened, people were asking where they could get our ice cream in the wintertime, and since most of our accounts close after Labor Day we decided to stay open all year.” The store’s interior will take you back in time; it’s decorated with memorabilia from old ice cream equipment, molds, scoops and hand-cranked ice cream makers. They even have an old popsicle machine that they use to make ice pops. Two of the most popular ice cream flavors are “Coffee Toffee” and “Coffee Mudpie,” and a new addition is the old fashioned “Creamsicle.” “Southport Sunset” combines pineapple, strawberry and orange flavors, modeling the hues of our beautiful sunsets. They also offer ice cream cakes, created to meet the customers whims. Chuck’s creative streak keeps all of their offerings fresh and unique. “I think I’ve made over 3000 flavors; I’ve quit counting,” he relates. “We have about 50 flavors available for wholesale, but I will make anything they want. I will also make an exclusive product for accounts that want them. For example, for Noah, who runs the Scoop Shop in Oak Island, I made a “Noah’s Ark” for the kids. It has vanilla ice cream, a little fudge, M&Ms and – you guessed it – animal crackers!” The Geisel’s commitment to customer service knows no bounds. “ The day before the Fourth of July – Tuesday night – I got a call from Spikes at 11 p.m.,” Chuck recalls. “That morning we had just delivered their order for the whole week, but they were out. I asked them, ‘What time does the pa-

rade start? He said 9 a.m. – I said we’ll be there at 7 am.’ So we came in, loaded up the truck and got it there. That afternoon they called again; they were out, so we delivered again! I think we were down there three or four times that day. Getting in and out of there was a nightmare, but we took care of our customer.” That commitment also goes for their staff. “We have seven employees. We just enjoy working with people, training them to learn and grow,” says Deb. “We have both been through cancer. We are now in

Wet Paint Art Sale

The Plein Air Art Festival is back in town BY AMI BROWN

M

ark your calendars, Sept 14-15th Southport will be all abuzz with artists creating paintings, live, in action, all over town. You can watch, learn, ask questions... and even buy the paintings the following day at the Wet Paint Sale! The Up Your Arts group along with the City of Southport have brought back the two day event, and artists could not be more excited.

ABOUT PLEN AIR

French impressionists turned to outdoor painting – en plein air, or, in the open air – to better observe the many ways light and shadow play with color in landscapes and public scenery. A series of Southport Plein Air Paint Outs sponsored by the city from 2013 to 2016 introduced artists across North Carolina to the coastal panorama we experience everyday, and it became a favorite on the plein air circuit. Up Your Arts and city officials want to put Southport back on that map by offering an expanded menu of activities involving the painters with area art students, visiting families, and our community at large. A painting workshop and tours of the Brunswick Community College campus on Lord Street are planned, along with an early evening winery reception and visits to local galleries, supervised plein air for children with art supplies provided, and up close and personal exposure to remarkable talent at work. For artists, it’s not too late to participate! The 2018 Southport Plein Air is open to all painters, regardless of age. It is a non-juried event, with merit and People’s Choice awards conferred by established local artists. Winners will be registered in the 2019 Southport Plein Air Festival free of charge. There is no limit on medium, quantity or size. Painters retain all proceeds from the sale of their work during the wet paint sale.

Opening reception from 4-6pm at Doc Meridian Winery, 305 N. Howe Street, in the heart of Southport’s walking gallery district – Includes beverages and appetizers, music and displays of work by artist judges; check-in/ registration continues Saturday, September 15 Information base from 8am-6pm at Ke-

ziah Memorial Park, W. Moore and Lord streets: Entertainment, food truck, and bathrooms available all day Check-in/registration from 8am-noon Kids’ Plein Air from 10am-2pm (art supplies provided) Wet Paint Sale from 4-6pm (artist setup

Kitchen

Warm and Yummy

Three easy dishes, perfect for entertaining STORY AND PHOTOS BY CLAUDIA O’NEILL

W

ith autumn just around the corner it is time for us to prepare for the cooler, crisper weather, the changing of leaves, afternoon bonfires, Sunday night football, and my personal favorite, cooler weather comfort foods. When I was growing up my mom would always make her notorious chicken chili recipe to kick off the start of the new season. The warmth of the chili would make me crave cooler weather and we would always end the night outside enjoying the heat of the fire. My parents were always great entertainers and hosting football parties was their specialty. As you may know it is difficult to cook for a large group of people, so my parents would always offer a variety of appetizers for our guests. Winter squash is taking the spotlight this season, holding the source of disease-fighting antioxidants rich in Vitamin A, B6, C, potassium, and fiber. So keep your guests happy with some healthy and delicious appetizers like the easy crispy buttercup squash poppers. And we cannot forget the dessert! Blackberries are my favorite fruit and are extremely juicy and ready to be eaten in the month of September. Change things up with some blackberry cheesecake brownies to take your guests’ breath away.

1 15oz. can whole kernel corn drained 1 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. black pepper 1 tsp. cumin 3/4 tsp. oregano 1/2 tsp. chili powder Small handful fresh cilantro chopped 4 oz. reduced fat cream cheese softened 1/4 cup half and half TOPPINGS: Sliced jalapenos Sliced avocados Dollop of sour cream Minced fresh cilantro Tortilla strips Shredded Monterey jack INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Add chicken breasts to bottom of slow cooker, top with salt, pepper, cumin, oregano, and chili powder. 2. Top with diced onion, minced garlic, great Northern beans, green chilies, corn, chicken broth and cilantro. Stir. 3. Cover and cook on LOW for 8 hours or on HIGH for 3-4 hours. CREAMY CHICKEN CHILI 4. Remove chicken to large mixing bowl, INGREDIENTS: shred, then return to slow cooker. 1 lb. boneless skinless chicken breasts 5. Add cream cheese and half and half, stir, 1 yellow onion diced then cover and cook on HIGH for 15 minutes, 2 cloves garlic minced or until chili is creamy and slightly thickened. 24 oz. chicken broth 6. Stir well and serve with desired toppings 2 15oz. cans great Northern beans drained and rinsed 2 4oz. cans diced green chilies (mild or CRISPY BUTTERCUP SQUASH POPPERS hot) INGREDIENTS: 3 to 3½-pound buttercup or butternut squash 2 eggs, lightly beaten 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour ¾ cup panko bread crumbs ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese ½ teaspoon black pepper 1 lemon Nonstick olive oil cooking spray 1 5.3 to 6-ounce carton plain fat-free Greek yogurt ¼ cup light mayonnaise 1 clove garlic, minced 1 dash salt 1 dash ground chipotle chile pepper or chili powder (optional) Fresh arugula (optional) INSTRUCTIONS: 40-minute preparation time. hour. 1. Preheat oven to 425°F. Line a 15x10-inch baking pan with foil. Halve, seed, and peel squash. Cut half of the squash into 3-inch strips. Reserve the remaining squash for another use. 2. In one dish combine eggs and flour. In another dish stir together bread crumbs, cheese, and black pepper. Roll squash strips in egg mixture, then in crumb mixture to coat. Place in the prepared baking pan. 3. Lightly coat tops of squash strips with cooking spray. Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until tender and golden. 4. For the sauce, remove ½ tsp. zest and squeeze 2 tsp. juice from lemon. In a small bowl combine lemon zest, 1 to 2 tsp. of the juice, and the next five ingredients (through ground chipotle pepper). If desired, sprinkle with additional chipotle pepper. 5. If desired, arrange squash poppers on a bed of arugula. Serve with sauce for dipping. BLACKBERRY CHEESECAKE BROWNIES INGREDIENTS: For the brownies 3/4 cup cocoa powder

1 1/2 cups sugar 2 eggs 11 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon salt For the blackberry puree 6 oz. fresh or frozen blackberries 1/4 cup granulated white sugar 1/4 cup water For the cheesecake 8 ounces cream cheese, softened 1/4 cup greek yogurt 1 large egg (room temperature) 1/4 cup sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Cook blackberry puree by combining all ingredients in a small saucepan over medium-high heat for 8-10 minutes. Use a whisk or spoon to help break down the blackberries. Once cooked, place a fine mesh strainer over a small bowl and, using a spatula, squeeze through all of the liquid and dispose of the solids. Let cool to room temperature. 2. Preheat oven to 325°F. Line an 8"x8" baking dish with parchment paper and set aside. In a microwave-safe mixing bowl, melt the butter. Stir in sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, and salt. Once combined, fold in cocoa powder and flour. Pour the brownie batter into the baking dish, spreading evenly to the edges. 3. Combine all cheesecake ingredients in a standing mixer fitted with a whisk attachment. Cream for 2-3 minutes on medium-high speed. Pour over brownie batter, spreading evenly to the edges. Drizzle the blackberry puree on top of the cheesecake batter and swirl using a fork, knife, or toothpick. Try to swirl only into the cheesecake batter, not the brownie batter. 4. Bake for 1 hour, or until the cheesecake begins to turn golden and a knife inserted in the center of the brownies comes out mostly clean. Place in fridge and allow cooling for at least 2 hours but up to overnight. Cut into 9 large squares. Store brownies in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

HOMESTYLE Winding River Gem

The perfect lot & home with endless views BY AMI BROWN

E

lvira Gilbert’s new listing at 487 Deep Water Drive SE in Bolivia, in Winding River offers three large bedrooms, three and a half baths with over 3,200SF and just may be the best house you’ve seen all year. Situated on the Lockwood Folly River with scenic views that span the sky and untouched marsh, it’s a gem that really shines. To view this property you better be quick; with these water views, it’ll be gone in the blink of an eye. This custom home is in a very secluded setting right on the Lockwood Folly River and therefore is on one of the most private homesites in this gated community. The kitchen and living areas as well as the master bedroom overlook the river and a large area of marsh, which makes it the best place to observe the local wildlife. This spacious home offers three bedrooms, a Carolina Room with fire place, a large living room with buildins, a formal dining room, a breakfast room and a bonus room with separate bath as well as a three-season room. All floors are yellow heart pine in the living areas, the bathrooms are tiled and the bedrooms have Berber carpeting. This is a split floor plan with a private master suite to the left of the house, in which waking up in the morning and looking over the river bend is not going to make getting up in the morning very easy. The master bedroom is of good size and has a coffered ceiling plus an array of windows alongthe river side. From the well-appointed kitchen with granite counters and bar one will not miss out while preparing a meal. Above the two plus car garage is a well sized bonus room with a bathroom for the frequent visitors. To the back is a large three season

room, which accommodates a big table as does the deck. Most of the over a half acre of land is tiered and landscaped with low maintenance plantings. Winding River Plantation offers resort style amenities, golf, pool, ten-

nis, boating and a private beach club. This home is nestled in the gated community of Winding River, but feels like your home away from home. More features include: Down stairs

Master bedroom, 9 foot ceilings, workshop, garage, parking for four cars, built in 2002 and sits on .56 of acre.

Boat Show will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2018, at the historic Old Yacht Basin in Southport, from 10 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. The In-Water event will end at 3:30 p.m. for the Awards Ceremony at 4:00 p.m. in front of the entertainment tent. Our tradition continues with boats on display on land and In-Water with visitors being able to meet and talk with wooden boat makers and owners, and to vote for their favorite boat entrant for the People’s Choice Award. Children Activities will return to this year’s show under the tutelage of the NC Maritime Museum of Southport’s Nauti-Kids program. The little sailors will be able to build (with or without help) their own boats and test their sea-worthiness, to learn rope making, learn to sail in a static display and learn from exhibits by the North Carolina Aquarium and The Ft Fisher Underwater Archeology Branch as part of the day’s activities. More boats, both in and out of the water, and more nautical/maritime vendors are expected at this year’s show, which has been growing every year. Nautical & maritime demonstrations are planned along the waterfront, and the model boat exhibit will return. A new collectors’ quality poster has been designed, as well as the special edition T-shirt for this year’s show. Both will be available at the show from the Ship’s Store tent. Once again, there will be many exciting items to be raffled.
