IN THIS ISSUE

We like to, half-jokingly, refer to September and October as

“Locals’ Summer.” The weather is still great, ranging from very summer-y to a pleasant Coastal North Carolina autumn. As school starts, we have fewer visitors sharing our beaches and restaurants. It’s not as dramatic a drop off in tourism as it was years ago, and our beautiful fall weather and the activities that go along with it are being disconvered by more and more people, but it’s still quite a bit quieter. But as you’ll see from our expanded events calendar pages, this is the season for getting out and enjoying festivals, concerts, markets and all sorts of other events. Both Oak Island and Southport are hosting weekly concerts, Oak Island’s Saturday evening Live & Local even features a farmers and craft market, while many of Southport’s Thursday night concerts will host a food truck. We have pirates invading Belville right up the road and Labor Day weekend is full of fun including a car show, a surfing competition, the annual Go Jump In The Lake run and the Oak Island Art Guild craft show at the airport. Go enjoy!

Southport Historical Society Walking Tours

Sometimeswe live in a place for so long that we take it for granted. Southport is teeming with maritime lore and historical significance, but maybe its been a while since you took notice. The City’s appeal to tourists, who come for the quaint shops, awesome seafood restaurants, and elegant historic homes, is no surprise. The sleepy seaside community is so charming and quintessentially nautical that it’s a frequent setting for Hollywood films and television series. Perhaps it’s time for a refresher course!

The Southport Historical Society (SHS) has created several self-guided, themed walking tours of Southport that are now available on a mobile app called PocketSights. Choose the one that appeals to your interests, your timeframe, and your walking stamina. Whether you live in the area or are visiting our beautiful coastal town, we think it’s time for a tour.

Historical Tours Go Mobile

The Southport Historical Society has long maintained a comprehensive, self-guided tour called “Historic Southport.” The popular tour is mapped out in a bright yellow brochure that’s available at the Visitor Center.

“We were looking for a way to make that tour available on mobile devices, not to replace the brochures but to cut back on the need for so much paper,” said Bob Surridge, Vice President of the Southport Historical Society. “The brochures fly out the door!”

Bob, who moved to Southport from Pennsylvania about 15 years ago, has been a volunteer with SHS for 10 years. An avid history buff, he wrote a neat book called “Hominy Muffins and Oyster Pie,” recounting the life of 54 female parishioners from St. Phillips Episcopal Church, who all contributed to a parish cookbook in 1907. (The book, which includes some amazing recipes, is available to purchase at the Visitor Center.) During his research, Bob became acquainted with SHS and the rest was, well, history!

A few years ago, Bob discovered a tourism app called “PocketSights” that was easy

to work with and cost nothing but effort to use. Based on the success of uploading the Historic Southport Tour, SHS began working with the City of Southport’s Tourism Depart-

ment to create and install four new themed walking tours of Southport and one driving tour.

PocketSights is a free mobile app that anyone can easily download onto their cell phone. Once installed, you’ll have access to all the tours in your area, wherever you are in the country! At the start of each tour, you’ll see the distance, average walking time, and number of stops. You can preview the tours by clicking on the “Places You’ll See” tab. A detailed map shows each site marked with a star, with pictures to help you spot them. Once you start the tour, click on the numbered sites to find historical descriptions and interesting stories. (NOTE: The cover page of each tour lists a mileage of 5.9 or 6 miles; ignore that! Once you click to open the tour, the correct mileage will be displayed.)

I recently headed into Southport to try out a few of the tours myself, and boy did I learn a lot. It’s a fun way to learn about local history while wandering around at your own pace.

Memorial Monuments and Museums Tour (12 stops,

0.5miles)

This is the shortest of the walking tours, which is why I chose it as my first route. Not that I’m lazy, but I had picked the hottest day of the summer for my adventure! Fortunately, the town’s beautiful live oaks

provided shade along the way and the ever-present sea breeze was a blessing. The route took me less than 45 minutes to walk, in sync with the time listed on the mobile app.

Although I was familiar with most of the monuments, I appreciated the background information provided in the PocketSights tour. I was grateful to learn more about the monument in the Old Smithfield Burying Ground dedicated to 10 river pilots who drowned in the Cape Fear River during the late 1800s. I was moved by the quote engraved on this monument: “The winds and the Sea sing their requiem; and shall forever more.”

The streets on this walking tour are peaceful and shady, a nice reprieve from the bustle of Southport’s crowded business district in the summer. It’s amazing how much more you see when you are on foot! I enjoyed viewing historical homes and lovely gardens that I would not have seen otherwise.

There are three museums included in this tour; the Old Jail, the Maritime Museum, and the Fort Johnson Museum, which is like a time capsule from Southport’s past. Add in plenty of time to explore these great places.

Fort Johnson Museum

I will shamefully admit that although I’ve lived here for five years, I had never been in the Fort Johnson Museum. What a pleasant surprise I was in for! Established as a British fort in 1745, it was used for various military purposes and living quarters right up until 2005, when it was donated to the City. There are many exhibits that cover the town’s military history, as well as an entire room dedicated to the movies and tv shows filmed in Southport, including “Crimes of the Heart” with Sissy Spacek, “The Secret Life

fore,” said John McDonald, a history buff who has been volunteering at the museum for two years. “Could be the due to the tv show ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty.’ Some of the scenes were filmed in Southport.”

Turns out, although the popular Amazon Prime series is set in a fictional Cape Cod town, most of footage is shot in the Southport and Wilmington areas.

The museum also has a fascinating display of Southport legend Robert Ruark, a gifted artist and successful writer. Several of Ruark’s books were made into Hollywood movies. The exhibit shows a glamorous life

filled with big game hunting, beautiful women, and exotic travels. Looks like Southport had its own version of Ernest Hemingway!

Other displays depict Southport’s influential African American citizens, its famous 4th of July celebration, its many local artists, and its maritime history. Leaving with an armload of brochures, I vowed to take all my future houseguests to see this terrific little museum.

Historic Southport Tour (27 stops, 5.3 miles):

The next day I headed back to town early for the much longer “Historic Southport” tour. This all-encompassing heritage tour begins with visits to Fort Johnson

Celebrating Ten Years of Serving Our Community www.SouthportMag.com /September 2023/ Southport Magazine 6 Community
Above left: Quarentine station viewed from Kingsley Park Above: River Pilot Tower and the Maritime Museum, and continues with stops at several historic churches and homes. You’ll also visit the Old Jail Muse-

um, the Smithfield Burying Ground, and four City parks. Don’t miss the small but charming Kingsly Park at the end of E. Bay Street, where you have a terrific view of the old Quarantine Station in the Cape Fear River. You’ll learn about the River Pilot’s Tower on Bay Street, where active river pilots are still headquartered, and the Indian Trail Tree in Keziah Park.

Honestly, I learned so many fascinating things on this tour! Did you know that St. Philip’s Chapel on East More Street served as a Union hospital during the Civil War, or that the Masonic Hall on E. Nash Street was used as an Army/Navy club during WWI? How about the fact that there is an Italian ghost who roams around the Brunswick Inn on East Bay Street?

The tour ends with stops in the Franklin Square Art Gallery, originally built as a school in 1904, and the Southport Baptist Church, built in 1871. It’s a full day and you cover a lot of ground, so bring plenty of water, wear comfortable shoes, and think about breaking up this tour with lunch at one of the many great restaurants in town.

African American Heritage Tour (17 stops, 3.4 miles)

Interestingly, this tour begins at an empty lot on East Nash Street. It was the original location of the Southport Police Department in 1974, when 33-year-old

George McCracken was promoted to Chief of Police, making him one of the first black police chiefs in the state. Despite unjustified concerns in other parts of the state and the country, McCracken’s appointment was not

controversial to the people of Southport, who admired him for his hard-working, honest reputation.

The tour will lead you to several African American churches, schools and shops, including the famous Mr. Willie’s Ice Cream Parlor and Pool Hall, a popular hangout for 58 years until Willie’s retirement in 1958. It’s worth the walk to see the Brunswick County Training School, built in 1924 as the only African American school that went above the eighth grade until 1950, now the home of Brunswick County Community College. Nearby is a park at the corner of Clarendon and Owens Streets named for Professor Alvin C. Caviness, who served as principal

of the BCTS from 1932-1970 and was a beloved role model. If you’re like me, you’ll want to hop in your car to see the last three stops on this tour: Brown’s Chapel AME Zion, one of the oldest AA congregations in Southport; Eugene Gore’s Flat Top Inn, a popular weekend nightclub for African Americans; and Jabbertown Road, the main street of Southport’s African American community after the Civil War, literally named after the women who were always jabbering outside in the street!

Historical Markers Tour

(25 stops, 2.2 miles)

This tour takes you to see all the historical markers, monuments and signs located throughout Southport’s historic district. While the majority are found along East Bay Street, there is a longish trek up to a marker for the Brunswick Training School and a nearby marker depicting the African American churches on Lord Street. There’s no shame in driving to these sites if the walk is too much. Another lengthy jog on the back end of this tour takes you to the Bonnet’s Creek marker, marking the site where the famous Gentlemen’s pirate, Stede Bonnet, had his hideout. Evidently it was not a very good place to hide, as the marker explains a battle broke out there in 1718 and the pirate was captured and hung!

The Safe Haven Movie Location Tour (11 stops, 3.4 miles)

The beginning of this tour goes quickly, as most of the locations are in the business district and the Yacht Basin, but you’ll want a car or bike to visit The Longshoremen’s Association on West 10th Street and The Southport Fort Fisher Ferry Station. It’s fun, if you are a fan of the Nicholas Sparks book and movie, to see the house were Alex lived, the City Pier where

Katie went to think, the restaurant where they had a romantic dinner, the shopping district where they strolled arm-in-arm. Go ahead — relive the romance!

Cape Fear River Circle Tour (8 stops in this driving loop to Wilmington and back)

Begin this day-long driving tour at the Fort Johnson Museum in Southport, then drive over to the ferry for a ride to Fort Fisher and the NC Aquarium. Continue into Wilmington for a stroll along the scenic River Walk, then take a tour of the battleship USS North Carolina. Begin heading back and stop in at historic Brunswick Town, a pre-revolutionary port town on the Cape Fear River that was destroyed by the British, and Fort Anderson, a Civil War era military base constructed on top of the old village site. As you arrive back in Southport, your final stop will be the Maritime Museum, a highlight for anyone fascinated by pirates, shipwrecks, and storms.

Become a Tourist in Your Own Backyard!

Whether you are visiting Southport for the first time, or have lived in the area for years, you’ll love learning about the histo-

ry of this great maritime town through any one of the PocketSights self-guided tours. The Southport Historical Society has done a tremendous job curating interesting facts and stories that bring the sites to life. If you use the PocketSights phone app, don’t forget to leave a comment at the end of the tour. It helps the SHS measure the app’s usage and popularity. Note: Several of the museums on these tours are closed on Sundays and most have limited hours in the off season, so be sure to plan accordingly.

Beach Haven Classes

A Fun Way To Learn A New Crafting Skill

Icouldn’t wait to see the finished piece. Could I really have made something as pretty as what I see in the store? The answer, which shouldn’t have surprised me but still does, is yes. I took one of the sea glass and resin classes at Beach Haven Design in Southport, and it was a terrific experience.

Artist and store owner Bette Shanahan offers a variety of project classes. Art ideas include shadow boxes with sea turtles, sailboats, dragonflies, a coastal wreath, or wildflowers. Budding artists can also try their hand at resin pumpkins in a variety of beautiful fall colors, and those with a bit of experience can try something more complicated like an octopus.

Bette teaches her classes to people with all levels of experience, whether

they’re here for the week or have been locals for years. She recently led a class of eight Brunswick County Schools art teachers. The group had received a grant and decided to put it to good use by learning a new medium. Though they all made sea turtle shadow boxes, Bette said that all eight looked different.

That’s her favorite part — seeing the unique ideas people come up with. And she’s a natural at helping them bring those ideas to life.

“Everyone says they’re not creative,” she said. “But they all walk out of her with something really cool.”

I was lucky enough to have a solo class, which I appreciated since I needed to do double duty and ask questions and jot down some notes while picking through colored glass for my project.

I have never been an artist. I was never good at art and I cannot draw at all. I would never have considered going to an art class, making something, and putting a picture of it in a magazine. I’ll admit that last part still makes me nervous, so don’t look with too critical an eye.

For me, crafting became something fun to do during the pandemic. I even took an online class and learned how to make my own digital designs for my craft cutting machine. I used to think decoupage was about my limit

but now I have my own mini circular saw and cut my own wood for making signs and such.

So I went to Bette’s class to learn more, to make a pretty art project and to write about it. That last thing does not make me nervous at all, by the way. I had no idea what to expect and I had specifically resisted the urge to watch all the YouTube videos, wanting to go in with fresh eyes.

Bette started at the beginning, explaining the differences between various types of resin and how they’re used. The important things to remember are that correct measurements are key, that the resin needs a minimum temperature to cure properly (but heat and humidity don’t bother it once it’s finished curing), that you should protect your surfaces and that you should wear gloves and keep your hair back. The products Bette uses have UV protectants and are non-toxic, and are safe enough for anyone to use. Whatever products you choose, Bette said, just make

sure you follow the directions.

After I learned the basics, I got to go through the bucket of glass pieces suitable for sailboat sails and boat bottoms. There were so many pretty ones that I had a hard time choosing. I stayed in the blues and greens and learned that one of my pieces was from a painted glass Easter egg. Many of the pieces come from bottles, and though Bette cuts them down, she was quick to remind me that these were glass pieces and I needed to be careful handling the edges. Some of the glass comes from alcohol bottles, and Bette said that her neighbors put empty colored bottles on her porch to add to her supply.

After I picked my pieces, including a sea glass one for a boat bottom, I got to go to the small glass pieces buffet. I picked out all kinds of blues and greens, some clear ones and some that had a mirrored side. I mixed all the pieces up on my plate and settled in to make my piece.

Bette brought me one to look at for something to go by, but reminded me that it was just an example. I was to

Celebrating Ten Years of Serving Our Community www.SouthportMag.com /September 2023/ Southport Magazine 10

put the pieces where I wanted them. I used some of the darker blues at the top, to help define the water and make the boat bottoms stand out more, and then I just put the colors where I thought they looked good. I asked Bette to please supervise and make sure I didn’t make it look terrible. She assured me that I wouldn’t make it look terrible, but she did add in a few pieces here and there, which I appreciated. Then it was time to glue down my stars. I chose to make my own version of starry nights instead of using seagulls, so I picked

out nine little stars and set them into place. I’d add a piece of white sea glass in later for a moon too. Then it was time for the resin. Bette mixed it up and I used a large popsicle stick to drizzle it all around. She helped me make sure the sails would stay attached and made sure I filled in all the edges. We dropped the moon into place and other than a few finishing touches to give the resin some texture and bubbles (which was optional), that was it.

Honestly, I was surprised at how easy it really was. Bette made me feel completely comfortable even though I was trying something totally new, and I imagine it would be a lot of fun with a group of friends.

Now that I have my finished piece — it takes 12 hours to cure — I am keeping

it in my craft room for inspiration, as a reminder to keep trying new things and a reminder that I can make things I think are pretty.

And isn’t that the point of art after all? Not just that it’s pretty, but that it’s pretty to you.

Feast of the Pirates

Pirate Invasion Brings Family Fun To Belville

Strap on that peg leg, put on that eye patch and sit your parrot on your shoulder. It’s time to join the 96th Feast of the Pirates at Belville’s Riverwalk Park, 580 River Road SE, on Saturday, Sept. 16 from 10 am - 6 pm.

Feast of the Pirates is organized and hosted by the Wilmington Harbor Enhancement Trust (WHET), a 501C(4) non-profit or-

ganization with a mission to shape and implement a vision for the beautification and balance of the Cape Fear River region and to promote safe and pleasure boating.

“We are the crew responsible for bringing in the Tall Ships to our ports for tours, such as The Pride of Baltimore II, Peacemaker, USCGC Barque Eagle, HMS Bounty, Pirate Ship Meka II, Pirate Ship Raven, The Unicorn, Liberty Clipper, The Prince William, Nao Santa Maria, Niña & Pinta, Lynx Scooner, Amistead Replica, El Galeon and Nao Trinidad,” said Schultz-Scherer.

“Many of these have been watched coming

in through our Southport waters, most recently the Trinidad. The proceeds we make from these tours are used to put on a full day Feast of the Pirates festival every year in September for families and children for a

full fun family outing.”

Schultz-Scherer said the Feast has a long history. “In the past, The Feast of Pirates was a three-day festival held on

Wrightsville Beach in the town of Wilmington, North Carolina during the late 1920s. Tourists from all over the region, as many as 28,000, traveled to the Port City. They had the pleasure of watching historical reenactments, boat races, competitions, and various parades. The reenactments ranged from George Washington’s ceremonious entrance into the city in 1791, to Blackbeard’s march to City Hall. Excessive alco-

hol consumption and public drunkenness during the 1929 festival, however, caused concern for committee members and other city officials. Nevertheless, it was the Great Depression that put the final nail in the coffin for The Feast of Pirates,” she said. “However, we have revivified “Feast of the Pirates” and brought it to the Brunswick Riverwalk Park on the Cape Fear River in Belville. Family Fishing Trip

Hooking & Cooking with Reelin’ Pelican and Rusty Hooks Dockside Grill

Irememberclearly waking up at zero dark thirty in the morning to go on a fishing trip with my best friend David Patterson and our dads when we were pre-teens. We lived in the Philadelphia suburbs and had a few hours to drive to get to the head boat on the Jersey shore. I remember getting to the dock as the sun was rising and looking for the boat. I remember the trip out and fishing for several hours and and it being little rough, resulting in several people (but none of our party) getting seasick. I remember talking fishing and other stuff with our dads, floating on the sea, and riding at the front of the boat on the way back in, but I don’t remember what we caught. I know we caught something because I remember giving it away on the dock. We didn’t want to mess cleaning and cooking it because it wasn’t going to feed both families, not by a long shot.

Last month we had family in town and I thought it would be fun to give a new generation a chance to experience something that I remembered so fondly. Thanks to Reelin Pelican Fishing Charters and Rusty Hooks Dockside Grill, three generations were able to enjoy a day of fishing, and afterwards we got to enjoy our catch without any of the hassle of cleaning and cooking the fish ourselves.

We didn’t have to wake up in the middle of the night like my childhood experience, because the Reelin’ Pelican is docked at Safe Harbor Marina in South Harbour and we were all coming form Oak Island, but it was still fun to see my son, now 23 years old, rising well before the sun. We met the rest of the crew — my dad, my brother-n-law Chris, my niece Sophie (14), and my nephew Zach (12) — in the parking lot, and set off to find the boat and our Captain.

Captain Robert Capps greeted us from the dock where he was busy getting the boat ready. He later told me that he himself

does indeed wake up in the middle of the night to prepare to take charters out. He helped everyone into the boat, we stowed our snacks and drinks, Capt. Robert helped Zach into a life vest (he needed to wear one

because he is under 12, but they are available for everyone on the boat), we settled down in the center console “Reelin’ Pelican,” and we were off before the sun came up.

It had been such a hot summer that it felt nice to be almost chilly as we ran up Dutchman Creek in search of bait. Reelin’ Pelican offers full and half-day trips and the half day trips leave either six in the morning like ours or right around lunch time. I would recommend booking the morn-

ing trip if you’re going in the summer, as the afternoon would be pretty hot. Capt. Robert said it does indeed get toasty and sometimes he’s watching six people try to jockey for position in the shade of the boat’s t-top. The weather on our trip was ideal.

We joined several other boats in searching for bait fish in Dutchman Creek, and my son, John, was impressed with how the boat captains all talked to each other and helped each other find where the bait was

Celebrating Ten Years of Serving Our Community www.SouthportMag.com /September 2023/ Southport Magazine 15 COMMUNITY

that particular morning. It really seems like a tight community. We (well, Capt. Robert) filled our bait well and we set off into the sunrise to our first fishing spot.

Now I’m not going to write about where this or later fishing spots are located. Each Captain has places he likes to go and while the fishing spots aren’t national security-level secrets, they are part of a charter boat captain’s stock-in-trade and I’m going to respect that. You’ll be able to get a general

idea from the photos, and Capt. Robert said he was ok with that, but that’s as far as we’ll go here.

Suffice to say, Cape. Robert can find fish. We had a great day catching sea trout and flounder, and even hooked a few sharks and a ray. We moved around enough to keep things interesting, but always felt we had plenty of fishing time at each stop.

Capt. Robert kept everyone’s hook

baited and told us where to cast. He did a great job helping Zach and Sophie, who both became rather good at placing a hook where they wanted it. Capt. Robert said his favorite part of his job was the kids, and it showed. As a dad, I can say it’s a treat to go fishing with children and not spend the entire time baiting hooks and untangling lines. Capt. Robert took care of it, and cheerfully at that.

Our community is gorgeous from the water, and John and I were excited to go places on the water we’d never been and see things we were familiar with from new perspectives. Our Pennsylvania family loved every minute of it, and got to see three lighthouses and watch two giant ships come into the Cape Fear and head up river. None of us are what you’d call avid fishermen. We

were in this for the experience, and we got all we could have hoped for and more.

After half a day of fishing we headed back to the dock. Capt. Robert kept ahold of the “keepers” and told us how Hook & Cook works. He took the fish to Rusty Hooks’ kitchen and we returned later for dinner, told the hostess we were the “Hook & Cook people,” and the restaurant took care of the rest.

Hook & Cook is a unique partnership between Reelin’ Pelican and Rusty Hooks Dockside Grille. It’s a family affair as Capt. Robert is Rusty Hooks owner Cindy Capps’ son, so it works well. The restaurant cleans and cooks your fish to your order. It’s a guarantee of the freshest fish possible without any of the bother of cleaning the fish or hoping you get the cooking just right.

We went to dinner the evening of our

fishing day with just myself, the lovely and talented Lisa, and John. Our server asked how we’d like the fish prepared and we passed it back to her looking for sugges-

tions, which she was ready for. The kitchen recommended, she said, grilled and lightly blackened sea trout with either a lemon sauce or mango salsa. We ordered some of

each preparation to get to try both. While we enjoyed and our drinks and watched the sunset, our server came by with a fried fish bites appetizer made from the fish they wouldn’t need for our entrees. It was a delicious and welcome surprise.

The entrees were terrific, grilled to perfection, and the toppings each complemented the fish well. I’d certainly urge you going with whatever preparation of your catch that the kitchen recommends. They obviously take pride in what they do.

A side benefit of our evening was the chance to chat with Cindy as she bustled around the restaurant. At one point she thanked us for “spending the day with my family.” As I told her, it was our pleasure. The Capps made our day one to remember.

I put a few photos of our trip on social media, as one does, and the first comment was from my childhood best friend David, “Do you remember that fishing trip with our dads?” Yep. And I’m hoping 40 years from now my son and niece and nephew will still be talking about ours.

Sunset On Summer

Oak Island Music Festival This Month

AfterLabor Day weekend, it seems we all breathe a bit easier. We’ve survived another summer proper and can look forward to fall, or what we like to call “local’s summer.” The Town of Oak Island started its Live & Local fall concert series a few years ago, and now the Town is debuting a new event to bridge the gap between the summer and fall festivities.

The inaugural Sunset on Summer Music Festival is an all day event featuring music and children’s activities. Food trucks will be on site and tasty adult beverages from various breweries and distilleries will be available for purchase. Sunset on Summer is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 9, at the Middleton Park fields, SE 46th Street and Dolphin Drive.

“It’s just something to bring the community together as we close the summer season,” Oak Island town manager David

Kelly said. “It also leads into our Live & Local series we have in the fall.”

Sunset on Summer kicks off with children’s activities from 11 am to 2 pm. The event will feature three bands — The Band of Oz from noon to 2 pm, Landslide (a Fleetwood Mac tribute band) from 3-5 pm, and 20 Ride (a Zac Brown tribute band) from 6-8 pm. A DJ will keep the music flowing in between the bands, and the splashpad will be open in between the bands as well. Sunset on Summer will

conclude with a fireworks display shortly after 8 pm.

“We wanted to start something for our community to show our appreciation and to bring our locals and guests together and bring another great summer to an end,” Kelly said.

“It will be great to see families and friends coming out and spending some time enjoying the music, food, and refreshments.” Kelly also complimented town staff for all the hard work they do to provide community engagement events which “showcase the great place where we live, work, and play.”

The Town’s Live & Local Series, featuring live music and arts and crafts vendors, will kick off later this month, so check our Fall Concerts story for that schedule.

Fall Concert Series

Oak Island & Southport Host Music & More

As the summer winds down our local events are winding up! As far a concerts in the park go, one of our favorites is Oak Island’s Live & Local series in Middleton Park. This year Southport has joined in on the fall fun, remixing its summer series to a new Fall Concert Series.

Oak Island’s Live & Local takes summer favorites like the Farmers Market and Summer Concert Series and re-imagines them in a format more accessible to working locals. Live & Local features a Farmers Market with all kinds of vendors, food trucks and a concert each Saturday night from Sept. 16 through Oct. 28, with the excep-

tion of Oct. 21 (when the park will be used for a large Pledge The Pink event, which you can read about in the October issue). The market runs from 4-8 pm and the concert from 6-8 pm. The events are on the Middleton Park fields, 4610 E. Dolphin Dr. and are free to attend.

After seeing how hot it was in

Franklin Square Park for its summer concerts, the City of Southport has kicked off the Fall Concert Series on Thursday nights from Aug. 31 through Nov. 16. The shows will remain in Franklin Square Park and run from 6-8 pm. Food will be avail-

able for sale at some shows; see the City’s event website at www. cityofsouthport/southport-concert-series to verify what nights will host a food truck.

Locally Made Quilts

Franklin Square Gallery Hosts Show

STORY CONTRIBUTED

Franklin Square Gallery is hosting the 2023 Quilt Show through Sept 23. The show features handmade art quilts created by members of the Oak Island Beach Quilters guild (OIBQ), an organization that includes over 90 local quilt artisans. This year, each quilt is being created to represent one of the four seasons and may feature either traditional quilting patterns, like “Maple Leaf” block or “Grandmother’s Flower Garden,” or original, one-of-a-kind patterns created by the individual quilter. Although quilts entered in the show will not be offered for sale through the Gallery, interested collectors are invited to contact the OIBQ at OKIbeachquilters@ gmail.com if they wish to add one of these artisan-made, one-of-akind quilts to their collection.

First, Second, Third and Fourth Prizes were awarded to selected quilts on August 26 prior to the Show’s opening, and a Viewers’ Choice Award will

also be chosen by votes submitted by visitors to the Show. The Quilt Show will also highlight the many charities supported by the OIBQ. These have

included the creation of nursery quilts, pillowcases, and receiving blankets for patients at Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center and “Quilts of Honor” which have been awarded to those who bravely serve and support our community.

A cooperative of more than 120 artists, Franklin Square Gallery is located at 130 E. West Street, Southport, NC

28461, in the heart of the historic downtown area. Surrounded by live oaks and situated in an historic building that once served as a schoolhouse and town hall, the Gallery offers the community and visitors alike the opportunity to experience the rich artistic culture that thrives in Southport and surrounding areas. The Gallery is open to the public, free of charge, from 10 am to 5 pm, Monday through Saturday, and all are welcome. The registration deadline for artists for the Southport Maritime Art Show is Oct 9.

Dosher Drug Drop-Off

Safely Dispose Of Unneeded Medications

STORY CONTRIBUTED

The 25th semi-annual “Operation Medicine Cabinet” drug take back event at Dosher Memorial Hospital is scheduled for Wednesday Oct. 4, between 9 am and 1 pm. Local residents are invited to drop off unwanted and expired prescription medications at the hospital’s front entrance, where law enforcement then takes what is collected for safe incineration. One of the conveniences of this event is that it is designed so that you can “drive through and drop off,” without having to leave your car.

At Dosher’s last drug drop in April, 2023, nearly 450 local households discarded 16,874 expired or unwanted narcotic pills and nearly 1,140 milliliters of narcotic liquids.

Dosher welcomes the opportunity to provide this service to local residents. For questions about Operation Medicine Cabinet, call the Dosher office of Marketing and Community Relations at 910-457-3900 or email marketing@dosher.org.

Champion Guitarist

Rock To Jazz To Teacher and Back to Rock

I’vesaid it before: There are many musicians here in the Cape Fear Region! Most of them in the Southport area are retired and happy to play a lot more without a work schedule. I once heard a local musician say you can throw a rock and hit an open mic in Southport. It really is a great community to be involved in. I have met and made lifelong musician friends and played alongside very talented musicians. And we have also lost a few over the years. It’s always challenging to get up in front of strangers and perform. But Southport always has a smiling face, a cold beverage, and people who just love music.

My band, Cat-a-tonic, has been through some changes since its inception in 2020. Shortly after the band started getting gigs, our guitar player announced he was quitting, leaving a big hole to fill. It took us months of searching with ads on musi-

cian boards and Facebook groups for the right person who could play the variety of music and genres we play. And then, finally, I got a message from a guitar player. A great guitar player named Champ. And the rest is history.

The youngest of three children, with an older brother and sister, Champion Davis Saint-Amand, was born in Wilmington but grew up in Rocky Mount. He currently lives in Fayetteville and has a home on Oak Island. “My father was from Wilmington, and my mother was from Currie, in Pender County,” said Champ. “I taught high school English for 28 years, including one year at South Brunswick High School in 1993. The last 24 years were at Cape Fear High School in Fayetteville.”

Champ was a musician all his life, and he was heavily influenced by rock musicians of the ‘60s and ‘70s. “My first musical inspiration, like many people of my age, was the Beatles,” he said. “I wanted to be Ringo Starr. I began playing drums and played in school bands, etc.,” he said. “When I got to high school, I gave up drums and concentrated on playing high school baseball. I had a friend in high school who played guitar, and the music that I was listening to at the time was guitar-dominated, so I naturally started wanting to play the music I loved, which was all the 70s rock stuff,” he said. “I went to East Carolina Univer-

sity and met a guy who was quite accomplished on guitar, and after hearing him, I became fairly obsessed.”

If you have ever seen Champ play solo at Ports of Call Restaurant in Southport, you can tell he loves to play jazz guitar, although jazz was not his first musical love. Learning how to play jazz came later. “I met a guy back home in Rocky Mount who owned a music store. His name is JD Joyner, and JD was really into jazz,” said Champ. “I had never really listened to jazz closely, but I started to get into jazz. I found a teacher in Greenville who helped me start learning to read music. After graduating from East Carolina, I lived in Rocky Mount for a year. I taught guitar privately at my friend JD’s store. I moved to Boston and attended Berklee College of Music for one year. I stayed in Boston after leaving Berklee and took lessons from a great music teacher named Charlie Banacos. Charlie was a great jazz pianist, but he taught his musical concepts to everyone, no matter the instrument. He was a great influence on me in many ways. I later moved to Atlanta and played with various rock, jazz, and wedding bands before joining a rock band and traveling with them on the road for almost a year. I got tired of that life and eventually moved back to North Carolina and began teaching English.”

Developing your chops as a musician takes a lot of practice and time. And there are a lot of ups and downs along the way. All musicians have that one gig where they forget everything! And Champ is no different. “My first event playing solo was memorable. It was a disaster! I was on a gig with my friend JD. We were playing for a lunch event at the local hospital in Rocky Mount. We were both going to play solo tunes and then play together. He did his tune and just played beautifully. I had learned a jazz tune note for note, but I really didn’t know the chords for the song. I just had

Celebrating Ten Years of Serving Our Community www.SouthportMag.com /September 2023/ Southport Magazine 52

memorized it. And once I started playing, I got nervous and forgot the piece! That experience taught me the importance of learning a song so well that if you do make a mistake, you can fall back into place and keep going.”

Champ is very busy playing solo guitar beach weddings when he is not playing with Cat-a-tonic. Our band has a Facebook page and Instagram where you can see all our upcoming events listed. “We have several gigs coming up in the fall that I’m looking forward to,” said Champ. “I also play solo jazz guitar at fine restaurants like Ports of Call in Southport and the CamCafe in Wilmington. I also play weddings and private parties,” he said. “I just enjoy playing music for people and hopefully spread some joy and happiness in the world.”

2023 CW Round Table

How Politics Interfered With Reconciliation

Unionforces took Hatteras Island, NC in the fall of 1861. The victory bolstered the North’s spirits after its loss to the Confederates at the first Battle of Bull Run. But this important event had a political angle in North Carolina with farcical implications. Guest speaker Max Longley will reveal the details at his presentation, “Marble Nash Taylor and Edward Stanly: North Carolina’s Two Civil War Union Generals” at the Brunswick Civil War Round Table’s first meeting of the new season on Tuesday, Sept. 5 at Hatch Auditorium on Caswell Beach. Everyone is welcome. Registration begins at 6:15 pm and the program starts at 7 pm. The visitor fee is $10, and can be applied toward the $25 annual membership dues.

This curious event began when the island’s Methodist minister, Marble Nash Taylor, a fascinating figure, was recruited by Charles Henry Foster, a shifty Northern adventurer. The pair held a small meeting on Hatteras claiming to represent the loyal people of North Carolina, and this “convention” appointed Taylor as the Unionist governor of the state. Then elections held on the island chose Foster as a Unionist member of Congress from North Carolina, an effort tossed scornfully aside by the U.S. House of Representatives, thus ending Foster’s political aspirations. But the seemingly-farcical selection of Taylor for governor was nevertheless considered “America’s 1st Attempt at Civil War Reunification,” as stated on a monument in Hatteras Village.

Enter charismatic Edward Stanly, a welldressed and charming Whig Congressman who had the ability to make friends as easily

as he could make enemies, including trading punches with a fellow Virginia congressman on the congressional floor. When the Civil War broke out, President Lincoln appointed Stanly as Taylor’s successor. His gubernatorial tenure lasted less than eight months, despite the U.S. Secretary of War Edwin

Stanton’s goal to reestablish the authority of the federal government in the state of North Carolina. Clearly his goal failed. During Stanly’s brief tenure, he disagreed with Union authorities, had difficulty spreading Unionist sentiment, tried protecting private property from pillaging Federal troops, and opposed the Emancipation Proclamation. In Stanly’s view, the role of military governor was to “restore the old order of things.” His goal failed, too!

Max Longley is a contributing author of Emerging Civil War which serves as a public history-oriented platform for sharing original scholarship related to the American Civil War. Longley is a prolific writer, with numerous articles in publications. His two latest books are entitled “For the Union and the Catholic Church: Four Converts in the Civil War,” and “Quaker Carpetbagger: J. William Thorne, Underground Railroad Host Turned North Carolina Politician.”
