LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

At age 95, my mother could still teach me a thing or two. She didn’t want to change the world, only make it a good place for her family. Everything she did for her family was out of love. Even the simplest of tasks, like helping me tie together a stack of cookies, was done out of love. Everyone should be so lucky. Mom is no longer with us, but we cherish her memory every day.

As of this month, I am an empty nester. I feel as though there should be some sort of support group or self help manual that comes along with taking your youngest child away to college. Maybe there is, but I never thought I would need one. How hard could it be? Actually, it should be really easy; less cleaning, cooking, organizing, worrying…. HA! Who am I kidding? As an adult and a mother I understand how important it is to have a group of people around that can offer support when things get tough or complicated. People need their community. Thankfully it hasn’t taken my son long to build a new community. Colleges are much better prepared, than they were 30 years ago. They provide all types of team building events that bond kids to their new support system or dorm mates, as they are called. It also doesn’t hurt that his big sister goes to the same school! Haha! What? I thought it was a brilliant idea! In this month’s issue we touch on a few ways to support our very special community. Most obviously showing concern and love for one another is the best way to support each other. But how do we do that? There are

several ways; donating to charities, cheering for a local team, thanking those who deserve it, or simply appreciating someone who has contributed to the beauty of our community through art or music. I’ll share this quote (because you know I love quotes). For a community to be whole and healthy, it must be based on people’s love and concern for each other. – Millard Fuller. I hope you can see how much we love our community and thank you for allowing us to support you in our own way. Peace,

CURRENTS Little Pink Houses of Hope Respite and rejuventation in Oak Island STORY BY: LESLEY RESCHLEY BSN,RN

A

s always the beaches of our community have long been a place of respite and rejuvenation for many generations of travelers. Once again this September, for a week, a special group will return for the sixth year.

Little Pink Houses of Hope is an organization that provides week long vacations for breast cancer patients and their families. Eleven families (about 40 people) will be coming to Oak Island from September 11 – 17, 2016 Jeanine Patten-Coble, herself a breast cancer survivor, started this organization. Diagnosed in June, 2009 on her way to a family vacation, she developed the idea leading to the mission statement of the organization to “promote breast cancer recovery by offering opportunities for survivors to reconnect and celebrate life”. She continues the efforts with what her co-worker calls a “heart for serving”. This tax-exempt 501 (c) 3 organization realizes that a cancer diagnosis impacts both the person and their family. The beach retreat, currently offered in NC, SC, AL, DE, FL and CA, helps families who live under the same roof to relax, reconnect and rejuvenate during their journey. Participants must currently be undergoing some type of treatment or have recently completed treatment. While not an opportunity for an extended family reunion, the immediate family benefits

as well as closure to the event. As this program continues to grow, so does the need for assistance. Although the Little Pink Houses of Hope Family Center in Alamance County holds fund raisers each year, it would be beneficial for our area to also host our own fundraiser. If you are interested in becoming involved, there are many opportunities on all levels. The following are needed: • Tax deductible cash donations • Tax deductible donations of supplies such as Paper towels, toilet paper, sunscreen, water etc. Please see the ad running in this magazine. • Gifts for children and adult participants. • Gift cards for shopping at local merchants to stock the beach houses. • Groups or businesses to provide meals for lunch and dinner. • Businesses or individuals to donate services for activities. • Community members to provide leadership in forming a

steering group for 2016. Please contact Amy Matthews at 336932-0176 if you can provide assistance for this year or next. See the ad in this issue or go to www. littlepink.org for more information. Let’s rally Southport to show this group how our Happiest Seaside Town can impact their lives! 1

while only sharing the financial burden of the travel. The majority of funding comes from private donations although some grants have been received in the past. Oak Island Accommodations has been instrumental, in our area, by contacting home owners who are willing to donate their homes for families. In addition, they provide the linens and cleaning services to both the families and volunteers who come to assist the program. The retreat includes morning local activities arranged to the desires of the participants but based on local community donations. These may include paddle boarding, golf, jewelry making, kayaking, a trip to Fort Fisher Aquarium etc. Lunch is typically a donated meal provided by one of our local restaurants or church group. Each house is stocked with breakfast foods and drinks. Lunches and dinners are held as a common meal but you are welcome to decline participation to be with your family unit. Amy Matthews, one of the employees, notes that the final night of the retreat is a very special and structured evening activity to allow sharing amongst the group www.SouthportMag.com / SEPTEMBER 2016 / Southport Magazine 5

All Aboard Southport!

Southport Wooden Boat Show sails into town STORY BY: AMI BROWN

S

tepping it up this year and preserving the heritage of Southport, the 7th annual Southport Wooden Boat show is a must for boat enthusiasts. You can view some amazing, handcrafted wooden boats on September 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.…but this show offers much, much more than that!

stated Board member Becky Felton. The Duke sponsorship this year provides more opportunities for expanding the educational elements, larger publicity campaign and more money to put back into the community. The Southport Wooden Boat Show provides support for the NC Maritime Museum at Southport as well as the Wooden Boat Building program at CFCC. The planning of the boat show is a yearround task; more than 20 committee members give their time and energy to make the event lively, entertaining and educational. More than 50 volunteers are needed on the day of the event, so if you want to help out, donate or provide sponsorship contact the boat show committee at info@southportwoodenboatshow.com or call 910 477-2787. If you’ve got a wooden boat you’d like to display, it’s not too late (but you better hurry) just go to the website and enter your details there. Be prepared to talk about your boat, its history and heritage and what it means to you.

EVENTS Educational Pavilion - offering numerous demonstrations and activities including: • Model boat building demos with Robert Tuttle • Ship-in-a-bottle demos by Jim Goodwin • Marlinspike demos how to tie a variety of Marine knots – for kids and adults Located on Caswell Avenue between Bay and Moore – and on Moore from Lord Street down to the Waterfront at the Yacht Basin you will find boats, educational activities, talks, vendors, gifts, prizes, music and more. See www.southportwoodenboatshow.com for all the details. Back in 2010, two wooden boat owners, Capt. Robert Potter & Capt. Bert Felton, had a conversation about wooden boats and the Southport Wooden Boat Show was born. Both their boats had just been placed on the NC Register of Historic Vessels and they planned to build on that recent publicity. With a small group of like-minded folks, the Southport Wooden Boat Show committee was formed and the first boat show was underway. Now seven years later…. the boat show grows each year as more

and more vendors, boat exhibitors, artists, craftsmen, educators and sponsors come on board for this worthy cause. The main purpose of the Southport Wooden Boat show is to preserve the heritage of wooden boats, the craft of building them and to celebrate the region’s maritime and boatbuilding history. The goals of the event are to offer fun activities for kids and adults that will help them understand our boat building history and admire and respect the traditional art of wooden boat building. “Without the generous local sponsorship and in-kind support, the Southport Wooden Boat Show would not exist. This year we welcome Duke Energy as our primary sponsor and we continue to be appreciative of the strong support given by numerous local individuals and businesses.”

Wooden Boat building demos by CFCC- If you want to learn how to build a wooden boat, here’s your chance. The Cape Fear Community College Wooden Boat Building program is a three semester degree program directed by Mark Bayne. Bayne along with a team of students will be building a wooden boat at the show this year. Shrimp boat talks by Potter’s SeafoodYou can visit the last working shrimp boat in Southport and learn about how shrimp boats have operated in the Cape Fear River for many years. Nauti-kids – activities just for children! Staff and Volunteers will be onsite to assist little sailors as they build their own wooden boats, and test their sea-worthiness in a safe, adjacent pond. Ted Dingley and Jim Hummer have created wooden hulls

to be completed by the Nauti-kids with masts, sails, decals and paint. To celebrate our fishing heritage and support of Brunswick Catch, kids will also be able to make “Squishy Fish” prints to take home.

NC Aquarium exhibits – free and fun for all Do your kids like to get their hands dirty? Or at least wet? Well this will be a fun opportunity to explore invertebrates found along North Carolina’s coast. The booth will showcase live animals such as hermit crabs, sea stars, anemones, snails, and other sea life that can be found locally.

Vendors – arts & crafts and more - all with a maritime theme! Located this year on Moore Street, the vendor tents will offer a variety of items including handmade crafts, jewelry, original art work, boat restoration and wood craftsmen and plenty of quality maritime merchandise.

The Taste of Cape Fear - Seafood Chowder lunch fundraiser! New this year! Instead of a cook-off, for $5 you can get an award winning bowl of seafood chowder, prepared by Frying Pan Restaurant. This recipe WON first prize at the 2012 chowder cook-off, and it’s a real tummy pleaser. Made with locally sourced seafood provided by Brunswick Catch vendors, just another way this event supports the local heritage and fishing industry. Ticket sales begin at 11am and chowder will be served between 12 and 2pm. Boy Scout Troop 238 will also be serving delicious hot dogs and drinks.

Brunswick County Cares

Local efforts for fundraising and raising awareness STORY BY: LISA P. STITES

S

ummertime at the coast means lots of visitors, days spent at the beach and spending time with friends and family. But for many Brunswick County residents, summertime fun doesn’t mean taking a break from supporting their favorite causes and charities. Whether it’s getting their friends and neighbors together to ride for a cure or playing golf to raise funds, these locals are keeping their priorities in order.

ize you have team members or friends and family members who have MS. It just kind of breeds from there. All of these charity events are important. This just happens to be our thing,” Snead said. “We feel we’ve made great strides. It’s not something that gets advertised a lot, but almost everyone has someone who has been touched by MS.” The MS Ride is September 10 and 11 in New Bern, NC. Team members have been out and about on the island, training individually and as a team. The group will also participate in a similar event in Sunset Beach in the October, called Breakaway to the Beach. For more information on that ride, visit www.bikenct.nationalmssociety. org/site/TR?fr_id=27693&pg=entry.

Island Riders – Riding To Support The National MS Society

Multiple Sclerosis is a disease that can affect anyone. It is a disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. A group of Oak Islanders and their friends use their bicycle riding skills to help fund finding a cure. There is a charity bicycle ride in New Bern every year, the MS Ride, to raise funds for the MS Society. This is the 10th year that a group of Oak Islanders will enhance the Society’s fundraising efforts. Island Riders is rolling with 19 participants this year, but has ridden with as many as 52. The group includes riders of all ages and abilities, from ages 12 to 82. Riders can choose their participation level, logging 30, 50, 75 or 100 miles each day of the event. Island Riders captain Larry Snead said most

of the group’s riders take the 100 mile route. Snead said he and others got involved with the charity ride through a former bicycle shop owner in town. Since then, in terms of fundraising, the Island Riders have usually been among the top 20 teams of the 120 or so teams that participate. Donations and new riders are always welcome, Snead said. Anyone who wants to make a donation can visit the team’s page at www.main.nationalmssociety. org/site/TR/Bike/NCTBikeEvents?team_ id=455776&pg=team&fr_id=27695. To volunteer with the team, bicyclists can contact Snead directly at (910) 617-9988. Snead said that everyone knows MS is a terrible disease, and helping raise funds for the MS Society by participating in the MS Ride is one way people without the disease can help. “You meet people, and you begin to real-

The 7th Annual Southport Golf Classic – a golf tournament to benefit the NC Maritime Museum at Southport

Did you know that there is a real, working periscope in downtown Southport that you can use to look across the river? Or that you can see the door from the store set used in the movie “Safe Haven” and artifacts from Civil War Blockade Runners? It’s all at the NC Maritime Museum at Southport. The Maritime Museum is a real treasure, and is appropriately located near the water, at 204 E. Moore Street. It is open year round, Tuesdays through Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Museum is supported in part by the Friends of the North Carolina Museum at Southport. The group’s mission is “to develop, encourage, and promote public awareness of the North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport; to serve as a phil-

anthropic organization for the support of the resources, programs and facilities of the NCMM at Southport; to render assistance as requested by the Museum…,” according to the Friends’ website, www.friendsncmmsouthport.org/the_friends.htm. One way the group supports the Museum is through its annual fundraiser. The 7th Annual Southport Golf Classic will be held September 14 on the Members course in St. James. The tournament will include 18 holes of golf, cart, range balls, a hole-in-one prize, skill awards, prizes in various categories, happy hour, dinner, raffles, and live and silent auctions. The event generally draws at least 112 participants; a complimentary foursome is provided every year to the U.S. Coast Guard as well. Typically, the event raises more than $20,000 for the Museum, and organizers hope for similar results this year even though there are several golf tournament fundraisers for worthy charities. Jim Carey is the recording secretary of the Friends of the Museum, and also chairs the golf tournament committee. The group’s fundraising efforts offer much needed support for operations, allowing more programs, such as the Third Thursday lecture series and the 2nd Saturdays (themed programs with special exhibits and vendors). “The tournament is a very important lifeline for the Museum,” Carey said. “Without it we would not be able to support a lot of the programs which we put on, usually without charge.” All of the proceeds from the golf tournament benefit the museum, and the Friends also offer support by helping with grounds keeping, volunteering as docents, maintaining exhibits, providing general upkeep and maintenance, building exhibits (Quarantine Station) and providing administrative assistance.

Any golfers who haven’t signed up already can check www.friendsncmmsouthport.org/fom_2016_golf_rack_card.pdf for more information; the cost for a single golfer is $85 and includes a day of golf, f cart, cocktail hour (beer and wine), and e dinner. The cost for a foursome is $340. e Carey said that you don’t have to be a g golfer to participate. Non-golfers join the - festivities in the dining room for dinner after golf. h Raising Funds and Raising d Awareness – Brunswick Literacy n Council Golf Tournament 8 Last year, the Brunswick County Literae cy Council (BCLC) worked with more than - 235 students in Financial Literacy, Comd puter Literacy, GED Preparation, English s as a Second Language, Workforce Prepay ration, Health Literacy and Workplace . Skills Development. One way the Council t helps finance these programs is through , its annual golf tournament. In fact, the s tournament provides more than 25 perf cent of the Council’s budget, according . to Executive Director Dorothy Hoerr. e “We need as many players as possie ble to participate at the great Carolis na National Golf Course,” Hoerr said. - “Our goal is to have 100 players.” , This year’s golf outing will be Septemd ber 24 at Carolina National Golf Club. h The event will include a Captain’s Choice,

lunch and awards receptions following the t golf, and a one-year subscription to “Golf . Digest” magazine. There will also be a - $10,000 hole-in-one contest for all regist tered players and a $1,000,000 hole-in-

one shootout for three lucky golfers. - In addition to fundraising, the tournas ment also provides the opportunity to s raise awareness of the BCLC and the help g it offers There are literally thousands of - people in the county whom the BCLC can )

help but are unaware of our programs. The golf tournament helps us spread the word to those people,” Hoerr said. The BCLC also reached more than 1,250 children and senior citizens through the Holiday Bookshare effort last year. “It’s important to note that we have room for many more students in one or more of our programs,” Hoerr said. “We simply need to continue to let people know that our programs are available. Over 35,000 adults in Brunswick County do not read at higher than a fourth grade level.” To help serve the literacy needs of Brunswick County, the BCLC relies on the assistance of more than 125 volunteers and a large base of support from community organizations and businesses. “With funding from individuals, corporations, the local towns and the County, as well as our fundraisers, we are able to continue to improve lives and build a stronger community through the power of literacy. We could not continue to provide quality programs and services at no charge without the support from the community we serve,” Hoerr said. To get involved in the golf tournament, visit www.planmygolfevent. com/28530-CopyofBrunswickCountyLiteracyCou/ for more information. Or, to get involved with the Literacy Council, visit bcliteracy.org/. “There are so many people who provide support,” Hoerr said. “This passion goes beyond the three employees, the Board of Directors, and the tutor. It includes those who perform seemingly mundane tasks like mowing the grass, helping to keep the building clean, performing needed maintenance at no charge, running errands, providing snacks, etc. When adults become more literate it has a huge effect on the quality of life in Brunswick County. And there are so many unnamed yet passionate people involved in this extremely worthy and important effort.” 1

SLEEP APNEA IS SERIOUS!

This is a heart rhythm that is characterized by an irregularly irregular rate, which is often rapid affecting 200,000 persons per year. What does this mean if you or your loved one experiences this health complication? The human heart is made of two upper chambers known as the atria and two lower chambers known as the ventricles. Normally, the upper chambers beat in 1:1 coordination with the lower chambers pumping blood to the lungs for replenishment of oxygen then to the body and organs. The right atria contains a cluster area of cells known as the sinus node which is responsible for the initiation of the electrical impulse which starts the pumping cycle. In atrial fibrillation, there is a loss of this 1:1 coordination and instead an excess of many electrical impulses from other cell areas, which results in a fibrillation or quiv-

ering of the upper chambers. Because of this quivering, there is an inadequate blood flow pattern in the atria. Symptoms typically include the sensation of a racing heart or chest palpitations, shortness of breath, weakness, chest pain, inability to tolerate exercise and often feelings of being dizzy, faint or lightheaded. Prompt diagnosis by an Electrocardiogram (ECG)/Holter Monitor/Event Recorder and treatment is necessary, so seek medical attention promptly. As the blood pools in atrial chambers, blood clots may form which can circulate to other organs or the brain causing stroke and interruption of blood flow to vital organs. Other complications can be heart failure and other related heart issues. Atrial fibrillation has many possible causes which include heart disease and high blood pressure, metabolic diseases such

If untreated, this condition can contribute to: 1. Heart Attack 2. Stroke 3. Congestive Heart Failure 4. Uncontrolled Hypertension 5. Difficult to control blood sugars

SO, LADIES if you suffer with chronic fatigue, headaches or depression and GENTLEMEN - If you suffer with loud snoring, and not feeling refreshed in the morning, YOU MAY HAVE SLEEP APNEA.

HEALTH as hyperthyroidism, problems with the normal heart pacemaker, viral infection, sleep apnea, use of stimulants such as caffeine, tobacco, medications and even alcohol-particularly binge drinking. However, many people may experience atrial fib without any of the above issues. Treatment is typically started with the use of medications, which control heart rate or restore conduction of the electrical impulses to normal rhythm as well as anticoagulant medications, for select individuals, which prevent blood clots. Your medical care provider can discuss risk/benefits of the various medications and treatments. Cardio version, the use of electric shock to restart the heart in a normal rhythm, is frequently used. Failure of these methods may precipitate the use of a catheter ablation procedure. During this procedure, a catheter is passed typically from the

patient’s groin into the heart to destroy the area of heart tissue that is causing the formation of the abnormal electrical signal. Refractory atrial fibrillation can also be treated by creation of scar tissue in the heart wall using surgical intervention requiring open-heart surgery. Those commercials are not lying when they say that A Fib can increase your risk of having a stroke. They also say that you should discuss your symptoms with your doctor. It is very important to keep up with your annual physical. None of us are getting any younger and it’s OK to admit when we are not feeling at our best. A Fib is nothing to ignore. Perhaps you can understand the importance of treatment for atrial fibrillation and appreciate the frequent commercials for treatment medications! Use them as a reminder to call your doctor to make your appointment! 1

COVER STORY Photo Contest

I

n May 2016, Southport Magazine asked our readers to send in some of their favorite photos of the area. We were looking for images that represented something special to the photographer. The response was overwhelming. We knew there were talented people in our area - but to this extent? Wow! Such beautiful images came across our desktops. We are so happy to share some of our favorites with you. It’s fitting that they run this month as we think about our community and getting involved to support our neighbors and friends. I hope you enjoy them as much as we did!

SHOWCASE Battle Of The Bands

Honoring One Of Our Areas Fallen Heroes STORY BY: ALAN BEASLEY

O

n Saturday September 24th at Spring Lake Park in Boiling Springs there will be a “Battle of the Bands” from our area. These battles can be very exciting and competitive as local bands come together to play their best tunes in the attempt to win the title of “Best Band”.

This title can be very helpful to a band of musicians trying to make it to the status of a working band; able to do live gigs at local venues for money. The fact that they can advertise winning a Battle of the Bands helps them get the opportunity to play other gigs and make money. Obviously winning some cash in the battle also helps that band purchase equipment needed to get started as a working band or to improve on equipment that they currently have. It all helps a musician who is trying to reach the personal goal of being part of a working band. A “Battle of the Bands” can be very beneficial. There are other ways this kind of event can be helpful. The Boiling Spring Lakes Battle of the Bands also benefits a scholarship fund set up in the name of one of our fallen heroes, Mr. Mitch Prince. Mitch lost his life in the line of duty as a Boiling Spring Lakes Police Officer in 2005. As a memorial to Mitch, a scholarship fund was set up to benefit local students that need financial support to continue their education. All proceeds from this event will benefit the Mitch Prince Law Enforcement Scholarship. It is a great way to honor Officer Prince and for the community to remember Mitch, his family and the sacrifice they made that day. The Battle of the Bands will be fun for the whole family. Be sure to bring your bathing suits, beach chairs and plan for a day of great

food, ice cream, fun and “live Music” at the Spring Lake Park in Boiling Spring Lakes, NC. The music will start at 11:00AM and last until… Interested Bands should contact BSL Special Events Coordinator Michelle Hennessy at 910.367.9015. There is free entry for the Bands and first place will pay $400.00 with a second place winner receiving $100.00. Tickets will be sold for $1.00 each or 6 Tickets for $5.00, to vote for your favorite Band. The ticket sales will help support the Scholarship as well. Please plan to support this community event and help support this very important Scholarship. Everyone will benefit from this fun day on the lake and some local band will earn the coveted title of “Best Band” from the Boiling Spring Lakes Battle of the Bands 2016. Who knows, you might see them at a local venue, playing professionally or possibly a national stage somewhere in the future! It all starts at a local event for most musicians that then go on to make the “Big Time”! So bring the family and have lots of fun for a great cause! What: Boiling Spring Lakes Battle of the Bands When: Saturday September 24th, 2016 11AM – until Where: Spring Lake Park, Boiling Spring Lakes, NC 28461 www.SouthportMag.com / SEPTEMBER 2016 / Southport Magazine 27

BIZ Q & A It’s The Great Pumpkin Patch Fall Fun for the Entire Family at Stewart’s Garden Center STORY BY: LESLIE FOSTER

I

t’s September and that means children will be going back to school, traffic will lighten up, and Stewart’s Hardware and Garden Center will be getting their shipment of pumpkins! Although we don’t have the magnificent fall foliage that most northern states enjoy, we can add color to our front porches and table tops with pumpkins! Stewart’s garden center sells pumpkins in just about every shade, and size you can imagine. From the popular Cinderella variety, to the desirable Ghost pumpkin, you can be certain your search for just the right pumpkin will be guaranteed at Stewarts! Can’t make it to a farm this fall? Not to worry, on October 1st Stewart’s will hold their 2nd annual Family Fun Day; offering Autumn actives that are fun for the whole family. From mini pumpkins to monster sizes, Stewart’s is THE place to find your pumpkin this Fall! Kim Lassiter is the Garden Center Manager at Stewart’s and she tell us all we need to know about pumpkins!.

Q. Fall is just around the corner; When do the first shipment of pumpkins arrive?

A. We will begin receiving our speciality pumpkins(white, Cinderella, pink, fairytale etc.) the week of Sept. 12th. Gourds, indian corn and lots of other items will also be arriving that week. The pumpkin patch will officially open Sept. 21st!

Q. It’s been a hot, dry summer; how may this affect quantity of the pumpkins that you have?

A. I do expect to see a slight shortage due to the heat. We get all of our pumpkins from N.C. and the farmers we deal with have been pumping lots and lots of water to the fields to keep the crop healthy. Hopefully the shortage will not be great enough to affect the price.

Q. Describe Stewart’s pumpkin patch and special activities you provide?

A. Wow! Where do I start? We are gearing up for a bigger and better patch this year by offering a huge variety of pumpkins as well as having all the extras like cornstalks, mums, pansies, gourds etc. Our 2nd Annual Fall Day is set for Oct.1st. We will have games for the kids, music, free hotdogs and I believe Gracie The Clown will be on hand for free facepainting and balloon art! And don’t forget all the great photo ops for the parents. So grab your

camera and kids and come check out the pumpkin patch when it opens!

Q. Which variety of Pumpkin is your best seller? A. I would say it’s probably a toss up between the Cinderella and Ghost pumpkin. Both gorgeous pumpkins and very unique. I’m excited to see the new varieties this year! We may have a new bestseller!

Q. Are pumpkins used for decoration, edible?

A. Absolutely! We will have edible varieties and of course all the cool pumpkins that you see in Southern Living and Martha to decorate with. Some varieties can be used for both. The Cinderella is one of the best cooking pumpkins around. Originating in France, as a cooking pumpkin but made its way to the states and became a decorating sensation!

Q. Do you also sell pumpkin butters and other seasonal treats? A. We don’t at this time. We are hoping to be able to expand in that area in the near future.

Q. In addition to pumpkins, are there other seasonal decorations for sale at the garden center?

A. We will have everything that you will possibly need to decorate your home for the fall holidays. You need it? I think you will be able to find it at Stewart’s Great Pumpkin Patch!

Stewart’s Hardware Garden Center Manager, Kim Lassiter has her PHD in Pumpkins!

Q. What is the BIGGEST pumpkin you’ve sold?

A. The biggest pumpkin I ever had the privilege of sending home with someone was a Big Max that weighed close to 200lbs. Had a customer that had admired it for 2 weeks and finally decided she was gonna tackle getting it home. Her plan was for it to fit in the trunk of her very compact car. We were able to get it in the trunk, I’m just not sure if she was ever able to get it out of her trunk! No such dilemma at Stewarts! We will gladly deliver that monster pumpkin to your doorstep.

Q. Any Pumpkin-Carving tips for the best Jack-O-Lanterns that can you pass along to our readers?

A. The best advice I can give is to invest in a good carving tool, take your time and think outside the box. The more unique the better!

Q. After Halloween and carved pumpkins are not looking their best, is there a better way to dispose of them?

A. Find a farmer who has livestock and they usually love to have any leftover pumpkins. Most livestock really enjoy pumpkins! It’s a treat for them!

SCENE The Maze Runner Excitement Around Every Turn! BY: EMILY KLINEFELTER I have not read the best-selling novel and book series by James Dashner, so this review is coming from that viewpoint.

T

he movie starts off with a good looking teen aged boy waking up trapped in a metal grated elevator which is traveling upward at an accelerated rate. I think my husband and I were just as confused as he was at this point. Why is he in there? Is this going to be like Willy Wonka except, wait, that’s not a glass top that he can bust through… aww cute boy is going to get squashed… what kind of sick movie is this?!!

Spoiler Alert- he does not get squashed like a bug, the top opens. Thomas (the boy in the elevator) is greeted by sunlight and a community of other teenage boys peering down at him. They

seemed to be expecting him but Thomas seems to have no idea what in the world is going on. In fact, Thomas has no memory of anything, including his name. For the past few years, a new boy has

The boys have managed to survive by like clockwork; all of them without memories of life outside this large field surround- creating a system of roles. There is one ed by high walls. Their memories all begin boy named Alby that acts as head of all with them waking up in the caged elevator. the boys and makes all the final decisions. To add to the confusion, within its walls are creatures employed to the maze walls move, like the staircases in kill the boys if caught in Harry Potter! The Runthe maze. They call them ners seem to be the elite the “grievers”. They look of the boys (most of them Do they get out? like cyborg insects mixed are on the council with with sharp teethed monAlby) whereas all the othWhat is outside the sters and they are not er boys, though importthe only things to worwalls? SCENE is given one rule- don’t go into the maze, which of course he couldn’t manage to follow. Way to cause friction Thomas! But, it is awesome because you get to see inside of the maze, and it is CRAZY! Ahh!!! So exciting and exhausting. Things get really messy when one day the elevator comes back up (early) and reveals a GIRL! Which is crazy enough because they have never seen a girl, but the girl comes with a note that reads “the last one EVER!” When the girl gains consciousness she recognizes Thomas! WHAT?? SHE HAS MEMORIES ?? Or does she? One thing leads to another and Thomas decides - hey gang, we need to get the heck out of dodge – but this idea is not shared by all, especially one of the council members and runner named Gally (who really does not like Thomas). Do they get out? What is outside the walls? How did they get into the maze? Why are they in the maze? My husband and I had so much fun watching this movie we immediately rented the second one and watched it. Both movies are a blast- with exhausting moments! We really enjoyed them.

Preserving the Past Moving forward in a new direction STORY BY: K AT H L E E N MCG OWA N | PH OTO S BY: PATRIC K M CGOWAN

W

elcome to the Almgren House, a charming Southport Victorian, built as a family home circa 1906 and fit with many of the embellishments and frills of the era...bay windows, hexagonal and octagonal shapes, turret elements, wide porches, complex roof lines and embellished trim. It was the ideal choice for creative homeowners, Bob and Judy Harris, who were seeking that one-of-a-kind home and set out to preserve its historical significance, express their individuality and highlight it’s truly distinctive features.

Under the eaves of the front porch, guests are greeted with comfortable and inviting wicker furniture and red rocking chairs that provide a cozy sitting area. Blue shiplap lines the ceiling, container plants make the space inviting and the decorative and mature landscape provides a bit of privacy. The outdoor colors, painted in gray tones that harmonize well with the red trim, are the same as when the home was purchased and the alternating colors of trim and siding creates a dramatic yet charming curb appeal. Bob Harris, the 7th generation of his family to live in Southport, or Smithfiled as they call it, arrived from Virginia in 1971. Many other ancestors came from Virginia as well but the remaining generations were born here in Southport. Bob arrived

as an educator and taught in the old high school...now the new high school...and was the principal at North Brunswick High School. Bob and his wife, Judy, had been living on Oak Island and were looking around at homes, trying to find that perfect match. They had grown tired of the ins and outs of weekly and seasonal renters and wanted to live a small town and tree-lined neighborhood lifestyle. Bob wanted to come back to Southport...back to his roots. “We like Southport and wanted this type of living...a laid back, easy going life. Both of us were getting to the end of our careers in education and we wanted someplace to retire that has the amenities we needed and the comfort that we like. This is the ideal place for us.... Its relaxing and I have roots here. Before I moved here, I spent

all my summers with my grandmother that lived here. My mother was born here, my grandmother was born here and 5 generations of people before that. So I had a connection. Judy got a connection all of the sudden it seems.” They looked at a lot of houses on Oak Island and in Southport until one day, while out riding around, they noticed a sign out in front of this house. Judy said “We need to go in there. So we made arrangements to come here and bang, this was it. Right then...Finally we had one house we both agreed on. It only took one look. We knew it just as soon as we saw it and moved in here in 1999 and have been here ever since.” The house was built by Charles Almgren, a Danish immigrant, on a double lot which sold at that time for $50 - $150 each. He was a native of Denmark that came to Southport in the last part of the 19th century. He was a bachelor and never lived in the home although some of his relatives did. Dr. Dosher’s daughter lived in the house for a while as well as Mr. Jesson or ‘Jens’ who was in charge of the quarantine station here in the early part of the century. Frank Ross, an Episcopalian minister lived here and changed the downstairs master bedroom into his study. A few others include Arlene Owens, a school teacher and the Canstons who the Harris’s purchased the home from in 1999. What very few people know about this house, as well as others nearby, is that it was built on gun emplacements installed during the war of 1812 to add firepower while keeping the ships from invading the port of Wilmington and the town of Smithfield. Originally, the land the house sits on, was a part of the Morris Plantation and behind the house, to the next block I believe, was a Confederate staging camp called Camp Walker. Cannon balls have been found as far as a block back. During World War 2 the upstairs was changed into an apartment, with its own kitchen. A German woman once lived there and she stopped by the house one day while visiting Southport and just wanted to look at the front of the house. There is a lot of history here and Bob and Judy have worked hard at maintaining that. Judy shares “I love historic houses. They have a story that no others have...there’s nothing like it.” Bob adds “Nothing is exactly square or rectangular and I like that about an old house.” I agree and I love that about an old house... all the creaks and the cabinets that don’t fit right. It’s broken in settled and that’s what you love about it. The couple did quite a bit of renovating and a couple additions while making the home their own but worked carefully to preserve the historical integrity of the home as much as possible. “It’s always im-

portant to me wherever and whenever to preserve history.... it’s very sad if you don’t because once its gone, its gone. There is no more”, Judy. Early on, when the couple first moved in, Judy found a bit of history in the attic. “I tend to explore every square inch of where I am. I was crawling in the attic space and I found an old scrapbook. The scrapbook belonged to a Miss Phipps, from Pacucah Kentucky, ... and I’m from western Kentucky. The scrapbook was titled “Travels Of A Southern Belle” and it was full of dance cards. She made the tour and Southport was one her stops. There were telegrams to her father from each place she stopped to keep

him in the loop of where she was traveling. It was a very odd, almost uneasy feeling, since I am from that part of western Kentucky. Other than that no real surprises... We kept everything as is, no major changes, kept everything original.” So, where is next? “We own another historic home, built in 1885, in western Kentucky that we redid too. And that’s where we will probably end up while we figure that out.” Smiles Judy. Bob adds, “We have found that this house was amazingly built compared to some others we’ve looked at and its been kept very well and that’s been a quality we’ve liked and appreciated. It’ll be hard to leave that behind.” We settle in and continue or conversa-

tion in the front room, packed with stunning furnishings, art and populated with all the perfect details...deep crown moldings, treasures from the past and elements of the present day. The wall color is one of those calming yet moody shades of green...it can appear tan or green depending on the amount of light filtering in through the front windows. There’s a nice mix of textured upholstery, antiques and floral arrangements in tones of intimate and sophisticated reds, golds and browns. Both are history buffs and Judy says “I’m an old soul by nature and both of us have always loved antiques... it’s extremely important to me no matter where I am...I migrate to the antiques.” I find it’s not always easy to keep an old space from looking like a museum but Bob and Judy have created a timeless, comfortable and welcoming space. It’s easy to feel at home and at ease. This is home to them and they use it and love it. The furnishings create a nice balance between the masculine and feminine and Judy did it all herself. Both like the hunt and the history of antiques while looking for the perfect piece but if there is a piece to add they would enjoy the hunt and preserve it as is. “I can take two years to add a piece, to find the right one, to add to it... I’d take my time to find the right one.” Judy. A settee gracefully occupies the opposite corner. Bob’s mother found the piece under the steps of an old warehouse, paid $2 for it and later turned down as much as $800. It’s been re-covered and adorned with an assortment of pillows creating a cozy and feminine space amongst a diverse collection of artwork.

HOMESTYLE

Across the foyer, is Bob’s library which is fit with an eclectic mix of styles and fabrics tying the neutral wall color together and balancing the masculinity of the antique furnishings. The room is staged with appropriate mix of wood furnishings, a couple upholstered chairs...one of which was Bob’s childhood bed...a rocker and collected items on top of a central area rug. A diploma hangs on the wall from the old Southport High Schools’ class of 1931. It belongs to Bob’s mother and is at home along-side many old books, artifacts, art and swords that set the mood for creative exploration and create a nostalgic, vintage feel. There’s a notable collection of service medals from Bob’s 7 years in Germany. He was there when the wall went up and once again, many years later, when it came down. The entrance to the room is flanked by a lovely set of glass paneled doors although they are not the originals. They were re-created to match the original 3 doors that where inadvertently destroyed. The original 3 doors were propped up against the back fence, ready to be refinished, but were mistaken for garbage and were destroyed... It was very sad. The bathroom, wallpapered with a traditional black and white toile, is very unique with its ornate fixtures and finishings that add character via a mixture of layered textures and materials. The black marble floor against the white tile and vintage-style lighting fill the space with period charm. There’s a lot of nice storage in this small Victorian bathroom which isn’t common but I am reminded that this was once the master suite. It’s actually kind of funny that there’s a real Victorian bathroom in his library. Note, above the sink... the mirror is an original window from the home. Judy smiles and chuckles, “I wanted one original window and I left it right there.” 46 Southport Magazine / SEPTEMBER 2016 / www.SouthportMag.com

Bob spends a lot of time in the library because he likes to ‘piddle around’ in there but other then the library, his favorite is the dining room. The dining room table was made by Bob’s grandfather and great grandfather out of an old walnut tree that fell in their yard during a storm. It’s was made without nails, including turned legs, at the turn of the century and its been in the family ever since. It hasn’t been moved many times... it weighs a ton. An antique chandelier hangs overhead and is dripping with crystals adding sparkle and light that bounces off the rich wood and warm red walls. The 1860s sideboard, with hide-a-drawer to hide jewels and whatnots, sits flush with the wood floor and is home to a set of antique lamps and paired with a set of mirrors creating a rustic charm and eccentric atmosphere. Judy shares that they just don’t make furniture like this anymore, “It’s gone by

the wayside and it seems that the younger generation doesn’t appreciate wood, it’s grains and the construction involved.” An English wash stand sits in one of the homes four bay windows. It has been slightly redone and updated a little..which Judy acknowledges probably ruined it’s value... but they like it and it fits perfectly in the space and now acts as a small beverage bar. A rustic wooden staircase leads to the three bedrooms upstairs. It’s covered with a floral runner that adds character and color while providing an interesting contrast to the more formal wainscoting, soothing green walls and rich red wall paper. There’s not a creak or pop as we climbed the stairs and I was impressed...that’s uncommon in an old home. The green walls continue into the landing and down the hallway where there’s just enough room for a cozy desk. An

arched entrance to the hall eases the transition while a set of rugs coordinate with the runner on the stairs. It’s a nice welcome to a hallway adorned with family photos and collected art. Each bedroom has it’s own style and character. The master bedroom features soft textures, calm neutral tones and an elegant vintage style. A beautiful four-poster bed, dressed in crisp white linens, is the focal point of the room and helps to keep it open and somewhat neutral against the small print wallpaper, the blue shiplap ceiling, the vintage accessories and the flowing lace curtains. The furnishings and a Victorian settee add a slightly more formal touch and their

HOMESTYLE darker tones bring some warmth to the space. Can’t you just imagine spending an afternoon on the settee in the bay window, lined with lace curtains for privacy? What a lovely space to daydream the afternoon away. The master bath is a cool grey and white, giving it somewhat of a luxe look. Frosted glass allows light to filter in but keeps it private at the same time. Rustic shiplap, painted white, lines the ceiling adding architectural detail and very cleverly brings character to the small space. A small nook, with the original paneled door, makes for a nice linen closet and a recessed cabinet installed on the opposite wall provides even more storage options. Storage is always a nice feature for an old house...the closets in the home are very roomy as well.. and that’s uncommon. The second bedroom has a set of narrow twins covered in bold stripes creating the perfect Victorian style bedroom with dark, rich colors, and intricately detailed accent pieces. The look is softened a bit by bringing in the lovely floral wallpaper and the sky blue shiplap overhead. And bedroom number three was originally a child’s bedroom so Judy decided to make it a child’s room once again. It is full of opulent finishes with layers of textured fabrics in florals and lace that enhance the lavish furnishings and collectibles that are romanticized throughout the space. Gold finishes and decorations shine in this bright room full of patterns and color while light from the large lace covered windows flood the space with light. Back downstairs to Judy’s favorite room...the kitchen. Its where she spends most of her time. And I can see why, it’s lovely. Older homes tend to feature functional, smaller kitchens rarely used by the home’s occupants but this kitchen is used and the couple wanted it to be marketable to contemporary buyers. Hence, this century-old home’s kitchen has been updated with every modern convenience. Judy wanted a practical functional space to replace their old closed in kitchen. So the space was opened up and they added new appliances, created more work space and had a large island constructed that includes plenty of prep space, is open on all sides and still allows for plenty of space to move around. The center island, which serves as the

command center of the kitchen, is made from a Queen Anne table from Bob’s Aunt Grace. Grace owned a store in the old Southport Village called The Water Wheel. She did very well there and made enough money to send her son to NC State who went on to earn an engineering degree. Anyway, this was one of her tables but unfortunately only the top could be salvaged.

The bottom of the island consists of shelves with the open sides all-around. Which, according to Judy, “Makes it easy to come in, pick out what you want and have at it.” A couple of spaces in the base cabinets

HOMESTYLE are open shelves and are a nice touch for easily accessing cookware and equipment. A series of small narrow drawers are stacked on both sides of the sink and each of these small drawers is the perfect size for spices. There are no clips on the back to hold them in so they slip all the way out when cooking and allow for all the spices to be seen at once. Crisp blue walls highlight the large molding, dark hardwood floors contrast against the sleek white cabinets and modern pendant lights hang over the old style apron sink which stands out against the rich granite counters. Natural light flows in from the large windows above the sink and through the stained glass created by Judy. The stained glass on the left represents boarding house and the other one, on the right, represents kitchen. They are both English. The kitchens pantry is a locker from an old Japanese ship....most likely used to as a safe or for guns...either way, it’s a pantry now. The cabinet is wooden but the front bars are iron and the lock is brass. The couple has adapted to the small space and found storage wherever they could and, as Bob says, “You do what you gotta do. The pantry is good when the grand kids are here. We can lock it and keep them out of the snacks that their parents don’t want them to have.” We all laugh. Put all these modern touches together and it creates a fully functional cooking, dining and entertaining space. It’s large and has all the modern amenities a chef could want, it allows for greater traffic flow, is full of natural light and efficiency yet still maintains the home’s antique charm. There’s a mix of eclectic accessories and a collection of decoratives, pots and pans overhead adds presence and functionality to the room in this century-old home So what does Judy like to cook in her kitchen? “Well, the grands love pastas and we do German food...with Bob living there for 7 years. The grands are global... they’ve been exposed to a lot. They love to help and they both like to get in the kitchen.” “Of course, I’m a strictly southern cook. So it’s nice to have help and some variety. But, I just love sweets and I do the old Southern pecan pie and the Savannah Ooey Gooey Pie. I can put anyone into diabetic shock.” “I do fried chicken and the hole 9 yards...mashed potatoes and all that. They like that every once in a while...the corn bread... I do it all. Some people have gotten away from that. Not me. I do it all. Everyone jokes about who is gonna be the first one to have a heart attack?!” Judy smiles and laughs. And of course, I agree...that’s the best kind of food. It’s

soul food...heart and soul. Judy adds, “And yes, the kitchen is an open kitchen,” and Bob laughs as she says, “Anybody that wants to cook is welcome to cook in my kitchen. Just have at... you can see it, you know where it is, just pull it out and get busy.” That’s the way it goes.” The breakfast room is fit with an English pub table that flips out and seats six. Judy cannot part with this piece. They will both miss the kitchen area, however Bob is slowly losing his sight so it’s time to pare down. The couple will go to their Kentucky home, travel, regroup and try to figure out a plan for what’s next. Bob loves, needs and wants to travel as much as he can, while he still can so that’s what the couple will do. They’ve been married for 35 years... quite an accomplishment... and they will be just fine. A Tiffany style light hangs over the pub table, toile slipcovers cover the side chairs and an old phone, that’s been in the family for years, sits on a nearby cabinet just waiting on a call from the past. The red wallpaper in the foyer almost joins the room and carries the color scheme throughout the home. It is new but fits so well that it looks original. Judy loves wallpaper and added it throughout the home. It is here, at the edge of the breakfast room, where the house once ended and an additional room was added. It has a seamless look by matching the home’s existing structure. “The space was small so we had it pushed out and made it work. It’s perfect size, cozy and has everything you need,” Judy explains. The bookcases and fireplace were added, along with some storage and an office space around the corner which Judy uses and loves. “It’s tucked away and we love www.SouthportMag.com / SEPTEMBER 2016 / Southport Magazine 49

HOMESTYLE

that.. so what if I have bills out,” laughs Judy. Bob adds, “Judy spends time back here, I come back here sometimes to use the computer and I like the fireplace...it heats entire area.” Bob would rather go into his cave/study. The room is filled with natural light from the large windows giving it an open and airy look while keeping in style with the rest of the home. The challenge was to bring the space up to date with modern conveniences without losing the cozy feel of an old home. “Our contractor, Philip Smith, mimicked the some 55 original Southport bows in the home when completing the addition and, naturally, they coordinate flawlessly.

The deep crown molding was hand-made and was a surprise. He did this on his own and he took a big risk hoping we would like it. We love it! There’s nothing NOT to like about it,” adds Judy, “He lives on Oak Island and is the best.” I like the little desk area in the front corner. Judy explains, “I had to have that and I don’t know why... I can’t remember now. It just seemed like that little space needed something but it isn’t used a lot.” She laughs and shrugs her shoulders. There’s plenty of photos, books and mementos in the cozy space including a photo of their son when he attended the Citadel. He now lives in Arlington and has been offered a government job. Bob laughs, “You gotta have a good job to live in Arlington.”

50 Southport Magazine / SEPTEMBER 2016 / www.SouthportMag.com

The laundry area and an additional bathroom were added although Bob didn’t want to use the space for another bathroom. But Judy feels that you cant have enough bathrooms. Its small, almost closet-like but its nice and full of light.. Its just lovely. There’s a lot of people in the this part of the home at Christmas time and it has a good flow. Guests can move about freely since there are no dead ends... just circles. There’s also no showoffyness, according to Judy, the family is all about living comfortably and wants guests to feel at ease in their home. Philip Smith also created a sweet little porch off the addition which Judy named Musolini’s Porch because it looks like the perfect place to give a speech. If you ask Judy, Smith is one of the best contractors she has ever seen. “He’s got a real eye for preservation and renovation and is very concerned about keeping the history alive. I came home and this porch was what I found. I just love it.” At the bottom of the porch stairs is the outdoor pantry complete with an awning and screened door. Judy, “People can just come in, get in the fridge and grab snacks from over there. They can just have at it.” The space was once a one car garage and the couple just didn’t need the garage here in Southport. Besides it was constructed more for the size of a Ford Model T and once you’d get a car in there, there’s simply wasn’t much room for anything else. Probably my personal favorite is the old sleep porch out back. Judy shares, “We really did it for the grands - two boys, aged 10 and 15 - it’s heated and cooled. They LOVE this because it’s like they are in their own little cave. We used the same

principles we would for an interior space, with one exception, its more fort-like. It’s a comfortable place to relax, dine, and converse, and all the curtains, furnishings and upholstery are made with durable fabrics and materials.” Tiebacks secure the curtains to the lower porch rails to keep them from billowing too much into the living space and faucet handles adorn the curtain rods playing up the fort-like atmosphere. The couch doubles as a trundle bed and there’s curtains all around, like a top secret fort. “We never hear a peep out of them,” smiles Judy, “We thought they’d fuss about not having a TV out here but we haven’t heard a word. They’ve enjoyed this room.” The couple once used the space as a cooking porch but for now the ceiling exhaust is closed off and the roof sealed. Judy mentions that it can be turned into a game room or whatever the new owner sees fit to use it for. The stained glass in the upper windows, at the peak, were created by Judy. They are of Prices Creek. Bob’s Great, Great Uncles...somewhere along the line, were blockade runners and one of them would set the light for them and made a lot of money... about $3000 per time. That’s a piece of history. As we walk back towards the house to visit the upstairs, Judy asks, “Ya’ll want some wine?” And that may have been the best thing I’d heard all day. Nothing like Southern hospitality. Together, as a couple, Bob and Judy will miss the backyard. They both say that the backyard is the best room in the house. “Even on hot days we have a great breeze out of the southwest,” adds Judy, “We cook out and entertain a lot. Its just very nice out here. It’s my favorite yard of any place I’ve ever lived. There’s a lot of brick that requires some upkeep, especially with all the leaves from the big oaks, but we don’t mind. It’s worth it to have the trees.” The breeze is divine, because of the positioning of the house, you would never know that it’s in the upper 90’s and humid today...what a great place to spend the afternoon. A variety of chairs and circles are arranged to accommodate sitting, sharing and visiting and invite rambling walks and afternoon lawn parties. There’s lots of interesting little spaces, different patterns in the bricks and little gardens to the side. The couple grows veggies and has a compost pile but this year the garden is limited to veggies in pots...it’s just easier to manage. There’s an oyster pit for roasting and a time out chair... but Judy smiles and says they don’t use that much. Family recently traveled from Virginia, Raleigh, Kentucky, North Carolina, California and Arizona for a reunion and the

couple effortlessly entertained some 20 quests. It’s a nice sized yard that goes all the way back to the alley, about 160 feet, and it’s 66 feet wide which I believe is a double lot. The backyard consists of several small structures that Judy refers to as Kentucky Houses. These small houses have tin roofs and boast both traditional and updated elements. The small front porches are reminiscent of an old general store. These are actually utility and storage buildings but they offered more opportunities for Bob and Judy to showcase their creative spirits. The house on the right is Bobs workshop... complete with a swing an old barbers chair on the porch. The chair is from Kentucky and dates back to the 1890s. So, according to Judy, “It will go with the house, you an sit in barber chair and have somebody cook for you...perhaps a shave and a haircut too! But, it weighs a ton and we cannot move it again.” Judy’s shop, the house on the opposite side, is where she creates and stores her stained glass supplies. She’s made all the stained glass in the house and has enjoyed the hobby for 10 years now. All the original windows form the house are in these old Kentucky house. Philip Smith, the contractor, made it work. Judy smiles. “He’s great at that. It’s funny how things work out. It’s just great and exactly what I wanted. The porches and everything....and it works.” The space gives the homeowners additional spaces to sit and entertain under the canopy of the trees and in the lush gardens around the yard. Judy points to the opposite side of the yard and says “That’s Bob’s cookhouse.. and it’s movable. You can just break it down and move it wherever you want. Yep, just have at it.” It’s an awesome little space that equipped with a fridge, a sink,

HOMESTYLE

rain flaps for wet weather and electricity for any and all of your cooking and dining needs. “We have really enjoyed this space. You can get 20 people in there easily and there’s flaps if cool or rainy.” So what’s next? The couple will miss the neighborhood and they have always felt at home here. “Its one of the best streets in Southport,” according to Bob, “I think its definitely one of the prettiest streets in Southport with the canopy”. But they will go to their Kentucky home and try to figure it out their next step in their journey together. Bob is losing a lot of his sight so, loves and needs, wants even though travel while can. They will do a lot of traveling in Germany and have even purchased a house there in a small village, even though the Moselle River, that was built in the 1900s So I guess it’s time to expand and get busy again... even though Bob said no more old houses. The home is set to be renovated but the plan is to be in Germany most of the summer, part of the fall and even Christmas time since it’s beautiful that time of year. As we talk under big old oak tree, Judy shares, “Who knows, we may be back to Southport. We’re adopting a gypsy life and that’s o. When the time comes, and Bob is not able to, we will figure something else out.” And I think...how nice to have the opportunity to do just that, how fortunate to be able to do that with someone you love. What will miss the most? Judy: “Well, its just worrying about the house, not knowing what’s happening and wondering what’s happening to it. That kind of thing, wondering if its taken care of...because we have hopefully maintained everything the way that we should have. The history of the house and the neighbor-

hood is important.” Bob: “The yard and the study. I will miss them both a lot.” The Grandchildren via Judy: “The grandchildren are really attached, they don’t want us to leave. They have made it home too and they don’t want us to leave Southport. We were more concerned about run-

ning it by the grand kids than about telling anyone else that the house was going to be for sale.” Their Son via Judy: “The front porch... we use it a lot,. It’s my sons favorite place. He sits out there with the boys, plays the guitar and talks to people walking by.”
