Easy Tech 8 Rules! This September issue marks the official end of Summer and the start of the School year for a lot of kids, adults and families. Since this area has it’s fair share of retirees, what better issue to highlight technology and the senior population. I met up with Jeff Pautz and his father to chat about how technology can benefit our population and community and they had some pretty awesome things to say. (have a read more on page 4) Choosing them for the cover of the magazine was easy, they both have great smiles and have so much to say about helping others. Easy Tech 8 Consulting can help seniors with their technology needs, set up a home to make it functional and create independence where it might be limited. Using today’s technology is not only for the youth, and you are never to old to learn!

Keep up with the times and the language STORY BY AMI BROWN

A

s technology moves forward at an ever quickening pace, you have to be right in there, not missing a step to keep up with not only the technology but how to communicate and understand the latest terminology. I thought it might be appropriate to help out some of our older readers with some easy explanations of now common techie words and terminology that quite frankly were not even in existence 5 years ago and are now commonplace. He can just speak into the air and Amazon’s Echo responds, answering his questions. (Alexa is another wireless option). He now has a new lease on life, he’s more independent and he loves to learn. “There are no words to explain how wonderful it feels.” He says. (As I tear up at his sincerity) This project has now turned into a business for Paul, and he wants to help other people become more independent by utilizing technology. He started Easy Tech 8 Consulting, and is setting up shop in Southport. He comes from an IT background and he says this is something that the aging community can really benefit from. More than anything Paul wants to do something meaningful. You can contact Paul at www.easytech8consulting.com or call the old fashioned way (910) 386-1285.

Eat better. Feel better. Cater better.

If you really want to take advantage of what new technology can do for you.. there are in home systems that can connect your lights, your TV, your heat/air, almost anything electronic. And from your phone, you can control them. Just imagine.. you can’t remember if you turned of your coffee pot, well, now you can check your phone, instead of running back home. You can open your garage doors, turn on your alarm, you can turn on and off lights when you are out of town - so it looks like someone is home. And for the aging population, this can be a real god send. When I had a chat to 84 year old Ron Pautz of Southport, I realized how important this new technology can be. He recently lost his wife, had a stroke, is losing his eyesight and hearing. He had a hard time just getting out of bed and thought this is it, his quality of life was practically NIL. His son, Jeff, stepped in and introduced him to some pretty amazing technol-

at better, feel better. That’s the guiding philosophy for Tropical Smoothie Cafe, located in the Walmart Plaza in Southport. But healthy doesn’t need to be boring, and the cafe proves that – combining flavorful tropical ingredients to produce smoothies with names like “blimey limey” and “rockin’ raspberry.”

Franchise owner Presley Reeves describes what he enjoys about the business. “The concept of ‘eat better, feel better’ is more than just being healthy. We offer bold flavors that reflect the tropical fruits and vegetables that are the foundation of our food. People are looking for alternatives to burgers and fries; we’re on the leading edge of where consumer tastes are going.” Reeves bought the franchise in December 2015. It is one of about 600 stores across the country, including two in Wilmington and one to open soon in Leland. The original store was in Florida; today the headquarters is in Atlanta. The chef there creates the winning combinations of ingredients to produce the smoothies, wraps, flatbreads and sandwiches that make Tropical Smoothie Cafe such a popular destination. The 25+ smoothie choices include classics like “mango magic,” superfoods with antioxidants like “acai berry boost,” supercharged options with added protein like “triple berry oat” and indulgent options like “bahama mama” (without

the rum of course). All the smoothies are 24 ounces and can be supplemented with fresh add-ins or supplements. Reeves points to the “island green” – with spinach, kale, mango, pineapple and banana – as probably their most popular smoothie. Every couple of months, Tropical Smoothie Cafe introduces a new smoothie as a special promotional product. But the flavorful options don’t stop with smoothies. Flatbreads, wraps, sandwiches and salads offer vegetarian and gluten-free options. The thai chicken salad, jamaican jerk chicken and totally turkey wraps are some of the most popular. Breakfast options featuring “all-american omelet” and “southwest omelet” wraps can be purchased all day long. And Reeves points to the customer-centered approach that Tropical Smoothie offers. “We work with people who have dietary concerns to offer vegetable proteins, what we call ‘beyond meat.’” For convenience and to keep you coming back, the cafe has an app that customers can download. You can order

in advance and even charge your purchase directly to your credit card. The app keeps track of the customer’s purchases and provides rewards – for every $55 spent, you get a $5 credit on your next purchase. Not only is Tropical Smoothie Cafe giving back to customers, they also give back to the community through charity fund-raisers. Currently their national effort is for Camp Sunshine, a year-round retreat in Maine for families of children with life-threatening illnesses. It is free to the families and provides medical and social support. Over the last 10 years, Tropical Smoothie Cafe stores across the country have raised over $4 million for the camp. Over the next few weeks, Tropical Smoothie Cafe will undergo a significant remodeling. Reeves says it will have more of a Miami-like vibe, with metal chairs and butcher block tables. The interior update will be fun and inviting; the food will continue to bring you a taste of the tropics right here in Southport.

Kings of the Tournament

King Mackerel winning anglers give us the scoop - and It’s all in the Boat! STORY BY LISA STITES

all is fishing season, and October brings the U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament to Southport. Fishermen come from all over for a chance at the big prize. As hundreds of fishermen get their boats ready and settle on a crew, one Supply man is hoping he can hook the biggest fish two years in a row. Terry Efird and, Rusty Locklear, won the tournament in 2016 with a 40.2-pound fish. Photo: Chamber of Commerce

Last year, Captain Terry Efird and his single-man crew, Rusty Locklear, won the tournament with a 40.2-pound fish. Originally from Robeson County, Efird said he’s been saltwater fishing for probably 20 years, and had been visiting Brunswick County for a long time before moving here

two years ago. He hopes to have a full crew of 4 this year, but as of early August, he was still working on his roster. His prize fish was on the small side for winning the tournament last year, Efird said. “That Friday there were a lot of storms,” he said. “We only caught two that

Friday. They were keepers but they were small. We kept them for the dinner table pretty much. We caught that fish very early Saturday morning and then we just sort of pointed to Southport and headed that way.” Efird calls himself a “weekend warrior,” fishing mostly on weekends since he works full time. He said he only entered two categories last year, but that was enough. “My fishing is the little guy compared to the big guy, fishing against unlimited fund guys,” he said. “No matter if you’re a big money guy or a small money guy, you don’t have to have the best of everything to catch the biggest fish.” The U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament is a big draw for the area, with many local fishermen entering and locals stopping by to see who is on the leader board. It’s held the first weekend of October (October 5-7 this year) at the Southport Marina. According to Southport-Oak Island Chamber of Commerce Executive Vice President Karen Sphar, in 2016, 464 boats from nine states participated, and there were 109 different North Carolina cities represented. This is the 38th year for the popular tournament , and the Chamber of Commerce estimates the financial impact

for the area is $2,141,280. Sphar said that more than 100 volunteers help make the tournament happen – registering the participants, checking out boats early in the morning, assisting boats getting in and out of the weigh-in docks and selling t-shirts. The clipboard ladies, as they are fondly called, stay with anglers who have weighed in a fish until the fish clears the eligibility process, escort them over the scales and then to the cutting table where the fish is checked freshness and any objects that affect the weight and eligibility, Sphar explained. Online registration for the tournament ends October 3. Check https://www. usopenkmt.com/ or email Fish@usopenkmt.com for more details. There are all sorts of prizes besides the largest fish of the tournament. There are prizes for specific weights, tournaments within the tournament and many more ways for fishermen to win something. There’s even a prize for the 139th largest fish caught. As for Efird, he said he’ll be ready. He confirmed what most spectators hear about the tournament -- it’s really the boat that wins the prize. Efird said at first, when he and Locklear went to weigh-in, it hadn’t really sunk in that they caught the largest fish. Once they realized they won, Efird said it was “overwhelming.” He reinvested his $25,000 win into the boat, fitting it with two new engines. There’s a lot of competition in fishing tournaments, especially the U.S. Open, he said. “It could be anybody’s win.” He said he plans to start with some of the places he fished last year and see how that goes. “It’s all about being in the right place at the right time. We caught the right fish at the right time.”

really enjoy detail-oriented work. Whether I am making tiny vases or carving fine lined drawings into a vase, I can get engrossed with one thing for hours, not realizing how much time has passed. And I have a hard time walking away if it’s not perfect or exactly how I wanted it to be. I have always been envious of artists who can quickly capture the spirit or emotion of their subject. They must have a fabulous muse speaking to them while they work, encouraging every glorious detail. These gifted artists can really draw in between the lines and show us inside the souls of the subjects they create. They see things differently and can quickly focus outside of the box and create amazing masterpieces out of ordinary things.

Such is the case with my good friend and award winning artist, Linda Drye. You can see the personality and soul of everything she paints and sculpts. I first met Drye at Franklin Square Gallery in 2008, and I instantly liked her from her colorful sea life tattoos and bold hair color to her kind and generous personality. I was really shocked that she hadn’t been an artist her entire life since she has that artist style and a quiet spark. But she didn’t touch a paintbrush until after she moved to Oak Island in 2005 after being a lifelong resident of Charlotte. She joined the Oak Is-

land Senior Center and then took her first watercolor class. And taking that class was life changing for her in many ways. Making herself happy was why she started painting in the first place. Drye found herself in a dark place emotionally after suffering through a long abusive marriage, serious life threatening health issues, and having to retire early in 2002. According to Drye, making art pulled her out of that depressive state. A self -proclaimed workaholic, she explained that retiring suddenly was very difficult for her. Without working all the time, she didn’t have anything

to keep her mind busy and off things. For years, she barely left the house. “If not for art, I probably would have still been in bed all the time. It’s the thing that keeps me up and going. Sometimes still, my depression tries to take over and I really have to push myself. That’s why it helps volunteering at the places I have my art because it makes me get out and makes me do more stuff which then in turn makes me happier.” About a year after taking that first water color class, someone suggested that she should enter one of her paintings in the Spring Show at the Franklin Square Gallery. “I actually won a ribbon,” Drye remembers. “I think it was an honorable mention, but I was so excited it was like

1st place to me! I had never entered a show, never dreamed of anything like that.” Then in 2009, she actually did win 1st place in the Brunswick Art Council’s show for a painting she did of a horse. “I just jumped up off the couch one night and did three horses at 8:30 at night, standing there, watching TV,” Drye said. Not only is Drye a successful 2 dimensional artist, but her vast talent has progressed to making pottery and sculptures also. Many of these have garnered her even more awards, including a recent 1st place award for a fantastic sculptural bust of the late musician, Bob Marley, fragile dreadlocks and all. The happiness that making art gives her really comes out in her work. Her bold use of colors and fearless textures give life to her subjects. “I love color and just going with a roller and brush and creating something,” Drye explains. She has taught herself many techniques and puts a lot of time into practicing things she has learned and changing things up to the next level. Ideas come to her from different places, she explains. “I usually don’t have a subject in mind when I start to paint. I just look at things in books and magazines ‘til I see

a subject I like or if I think of an animal. I jump on that and just start painting colors down first and go from there.” This is a process that continues to work well for her. Being a big supporter of the arts, Drye uses the majority of her earnings to purchase pieces from other artists, and to take art classes locally and across the country. Recently, Drye took two animal workshops in AZ with a renowned sculpture artist, Mary Susan Cate. With her strong desire to learn new techniques about armature and large-scale paper clay sculpture, Drye drove clear across the country to attend these classes and brought her sculptures home intact to finish. These spectacular animal sculptures are lifelike and show the details and movement as well as the emotion and personalities of the animals. Drye is successful at the business side of

art, selling her work in several venues. Her advice to new artists selling their work is to not give up. “If you are doing it to sell, don’t get discouraged because all people have opinions, good and bad,” she says. “Do what you like, and be prepared because if you started out as a hobby, it’s usually not going to support you as a living. It will still be a hobby hopefully with some good income on the side to keep you going. And join a lot of art groups and go to workshops whenever you can. It gives you a lot of insight into different art worlds. It has for me.” You can find Drye’s work at the Franklin Square Gallery and Duck, Duck Goose in Southport, the Oak Island Senior Center on Oak Island and Sunset River Marketplace in Shallotte. She also takes commission work and special orders. You can reach by email at ldrye@ec.rr.com.

LOOKING BACK Beneath Our Waters Sunken Ships provide a look into the past STORY BY: KASS FINCHER

T

hough they are often very different personalities, fishermen and SCUBA divers will agree they share one common interest – locating shipwrecks. The fishermen know that’s where the fish congregate; the divers know they will see spectacular marine life and catch a glimpse back in time.

When Southport resident and avid diver Wayne Strickland heard from some local fishermen about a possible wreck they had fished on off Frying Pan Shoals, he set out to locate it. Strickland describes the find as the most exciting dive he ever made. “It was July 1987. We were looking at a number of spots the fishermen had given us. It was at 95 feet, at that depth you can stay down about 20 minutes. The first thing I found was a doll’s head. There’s a single cylinder steam engine that goes up really high. We started looking around, did some research and found that the City of Houston had sunk in that area in 1878.” The City of Houston was an ironhulled steamship that carried passengers and supplies from New York to Texas. The people on it were preparing to move out west, and a steamer voyage was faster than the weeks-long uncomfortable stagecoach ride. But as they approached the NC coast that October of 1878, they encountered a northern-moving hurricane with gigantic waves. The bilge pumps could not keep up; the engine died and the boat began to sink. Though they had lifeboats, the captain did not feel his 34 passengers could survive the stormy seas and make it to shore. Their hopes were fading, when a steamer – the Margaret – approached. Everyone was rescued safely as the City of Houston sank. Strickland and his dive buddies were able to bring up many artifacts from the wreck. Most of them are on display at the NC Maritime Museum in Southport. They include toys – dolls,

marbles, rattles, wooden farm animals, building blocks, tin soldiers. And simple household goods like bottles of drugstore stock, snuff, sewing machines were found. They also recovered a trunk with the wedding gifts of one traveler, and framed family pics. Estimates are that we have hundreds of wrecks off our shores. Back in the days when captains had to navigate by the stars and the sun, the foggy or stormy weather off our coast – combined with extensive shoaling – would result in boats running aground and eventually sinking. And blockade-runners attempting to elude union boats would sometimes be forced ashore. Many of the wrecks are mere remnants of their original structure. Others are remarkably intact. Two of those nearby are the Raritan and Mount Dirfy’s. The Raritan was a 250’ steel freighter carrying a cargo of coffee to New York. It ran aground in 1942 on Frying Pan Shoals. In two pieces in 90 feet of water, the bow and stern are intact and marine life abounds. Mount Dirfy’s was a 400’ freighter steam ship. In 1936, the boat came from India with a cargo of iron ore. It was supposed to be going to Wilmington Delaware but headed for Wilmington N. C. instead, and ran aground at Frying Pan Shoals. Inman Campbell, owner of Blackbeard Scuba in Southport describes the Raritan and Mount Dirfy’s appeal for divers. “They are amazingly intact. The Mount Dirfy’s has a lot of swim-throughs, loads of fish, including sheephead, flounder, amberjack, tau-tog (“poor man’s grouper”). Generally you can see sand tiger

sharks on Mount Dirfy’s and the Raritan. They’re the most prevalent shark in this area, but they have no interest in us – our bubbles and equipment put them off.” Campbell describes the dangers of boating near Frying Pan Shoals. “There might be 30 or more wrecks out there, but many of them are just remnants or the visibility is not great. And it’s so shallow - if you’re 15 miles out you should be in 60+ feet of water. But there it can be 11 feet of water – it is super shallow.” Other wrecks are documented at the Maritime Museum. The Kate was a steamer originally running from Charleston to Florida. Local legend suggests the boat was responsible for bringing yellow fever into Wilmington. It was purchased during the Civil War for blockade-running and completed 20 runs before hitting obstructions and sinking near Bonnet’s Creek in 1862. The Ranger and Ella were also blockade runners that were driven ashore by Union boats in 1864. The Ranger sank near Lockwood’s Folly Inlet; Ella off Bald Head Island. Both are shallow and can become obstructions at low tide. Another blockade runner, Bendigo, had only completed two runs and was trying to avoid the wrecked blockade runner Elizabeth when it was forced ashore by the USS Iron Age near Lockwood’s Folly Inlet in 1864. As the Union boat tried to salvage Bendigo, it too ran aground. All three boats lie together to this day. In the last century, WWII submarines from Germany chased U. S. tankers all along our coast. One of the most trag-

ic incidents involved the John D. Gill. It was 528’ long and carrying a cargo of fuel from Texas when it was torpedoed in March of 1942 and sank 25 miles off the shore. The oil from the ship caught fire and the boat, as well as the water around it, was engulfed in flames. A Coast Guard cutter rescued some of those who got out in lifeboats, but 23 of the 43 seamen died in the fires. The U-boat was eventually hunted down in the Gulf of Mexico and lost its own crew in an aerial attack. Seaman Edwin F. Cheney, Jr. was awarded the Merchant Marine Distinguished Service Medal by President Franklin D. Roosevelt for his actions the night the John D. Gill sunk. The citation read in part: “he released and launched a life-raft from a sinking and burning ship and maneuvered it through a pool of burning oil to clear water by swimming under water, coming up only to breathe. Although he had incurred severe burns about the face and arms in this action, he then guided four of his shipmates to the raft, and swam to and rescued two others who were injured and unable to help themselves.“ Each shipwreck has its own dramatic story. But they all remind us of our maritime history – rich in both tragedy and valor. In our waters lie the remnants of all those stories.

The Distinguished Achievement Award of the International Bluegrass Music Association is one of the highest honors in the field. It is reserved for those who been forerunners in their field, and have made substantial contributions that broaden the genre’s accessibility and recognition. Louisa Branscomb is recognized for her contributions as a Songwriter and musician and as a songwriter educator, organizer, and advocate. She is best known for writing nearly 200d recorded songs, including Alison Krauss’ first hit and John Denver’s final hit, “Steel Rails,” one of the longest running chart hits in bluegrass history. She also penned 2014 Song of the Year (co-written with Lynch). Awards include Song of the Year 1991 (SPBGMA), Song of the Year 2014 (IBMA), Atlanta Music Hall of Fame, two Recorded Event of the Year Awards (IBMA), a first place in the prestigious Chris Austin Songwriting Contest, and a Georgia Lifetime Achievement Award. Louisa has evolved a pioneering model of songwriter development and mentorship through 26 years of directing her program at “Woodsong Farm Writer Retreat,” one of the oldest ongoing songwriter workshops in the country. Utilizing the natural setting along with tech-

niques for accessing the deepest voice of each individual writer, she has hosted over 1000 participants, including many returning participants working toward the master level of songwriting through her apprenticeship program. In community organization, Louisa’s efforts for the bluegrass songwriting community have proven catalytic in professionalizing that segment of the field. Branscomb was founding member of the IBMA Songwriter Committee, and as its chair drafted the Songwriter of the Year Award proposal. She has advanced a community-building model using songwriting through her non-profit, ScreenDoor Songwriter Alliance, which hosts the Southport Songwriters Festival. ScreenDoor sponsors programs using songwriting with veterans and at risk youth. When not working for songwriters and songwriting, she can be found bush hogging at Woodsong Farm on her John Deere, which is where many of her songs are penned. It is has been said that Louisa’s classic, Steel Rails, as recorded by Krauss, brought an entire new generation into bluegrass music, and is one of the most played and recorded songs today. About her work as teacher, students frequently remark: “I came to learn, I left transformed.”

HOMESTYLE

Hi Tech Work of Art

This new construction in downtown Southport brings Southern charm, smart technology and green-living together in the most beautiful way. STORY BY AMI BROWN PROFESSIONAL PHOTOS BY: MARK STEELMAN PHOTOGRAPHY

A

fter touring the residence during a delightful house warming party hosted by owners, Susan and John DeLaney a few weeks back, I knew this home had to make it into the Homestyle Section. Situated on a double corner lot in downtown Southport, this enormous new construction blends right into the historic neighborhood. Every inch of this house was custom designed by the DeLaneys, Architect Rich Bandera and builder Cliff Pender from Solstice Builders. This is truly a “Smart Home” utilizing the latest technology while creating a real work of art with a minimal environmental footprint. The DeLaney’s had two focused goals while building their dream home; #1 – Do it right the first time so there will be minimal maintenance and repairs and #2 – create a home they could grow old in, make it their “Forever” home. (Sorry folks this one is not for sale)

Southport Magazine 2016-2017 SOI Chamber Small Business of the Year Winner

The DeLaney’s are recent retirees and are not from Southport, although Susan was born in Roanoke Rapids NC, they’ve spent most of their lives (the past 25 years) in John’s Creek Georgia. They had been to Southport several times and knew when they retired they wanted to be close to the coast, in a small walkable town with warm weather. They looked all over the East Coast, but what really won them over, were the people of Southport, Susan said, “It felt like coming home.” Once they made the decision to move here permanently, the hunt was on for a house. They looked at dozens of options, but couldn’t find the perfect one. Kay Jolliff with Margaret Rudd Realty, knew about a couple empty lots that were not on the market, but she worked her magic negotiating skills and soon had secured them the perfect “in-town” double lot to build their dream home. Now for the fun part… The planning process took well over a year before the building even began. Every inch of the home was thought out, custom designed and run through a series of criteria. Every step of the way the DeLaney’s used local suppliers, contractors and designers when they could. There were a few times products had to be special ordered, but for most of the home was locally sourced. The first things you notice when you walk up to this house, is the huge Live Oak tree draping the front yard. The home was designed with this tree as a focal point. There are two other Live Oaks on the property, and since the build, they have planted 2 more. The landscaping is seamless with the surroundings, framing with porch and exterior aesthetic immaculately. The underground irrigation utilizes a well, completely off the city water grid. Buddy Barnes & Roy Pender, with their Landscaping skills are responsible for the masterwork. “This house was designed around the floors, we saw them in a show home in Atlanta, and fell in love with them.” Susan tells me. They are 7”, distressed engineered hard wood floors, stained for a dark, rustic feel.

HOMESTYLE

White and gray kitchen, huge island, open light and bright with amazing custom tile back-splash. And when they custom ordered the materials, the company did not make stair treads to match. Brandon King (King’s Custom Hardwoods) hand made every tread for the two staircases, distressing them to match and then stained them several times to replicate the exact shade. The DeLaneys seem to be pros at this home building stuff. One of the unique (and probably one of the smartest) things they did – they called in Building Performance Specialist to evaluate the property as it was being designed and built – to make sure it is at peak performance when it comes to energy efficiency. This service definitely pays off in the long run. They utilize blowers to test the leakiness of windows and doors, infrared heat sensors to make sure the ductwork is maximizing the heated space, and countless other tests to ensure quality throughout. They also have a generator that kicks on automatically if (and when) there is a power outage. It uses propane tank guaranteed to last through an extended usage. Hopefully this hurricane season will not make use of that system, but it’s good to know it’s there. A modern ERV air circulation system provides fresh filtered clean air to fill the home and eliminate any chance of mold or stale air. A well-sealed home is prone to other problems, so they have taken everything in account in this design, no question about that. The heating system and hot water

system run off Geo-Thermal pipes that are sent down 400 feet into the ground, and back up again. John explained it to me, and it sounds really cool. The water is instantly hot – no waiting on the tap. And the heating bill is practically nil. Remember those two goals? You can see how doing things like this right the first time around – planning for long term low maintenance, low cost and making sure things run as efficient as possible. Everything was thoughtfully planned in the design, making for a fabulous result. With a new construction, you’ve got a great opportunity to capture technology and make it really work for your lifestyle. John had the entire house hard wired for speakers, smart TV, smart lights, a security system and everything you can imagine (and probably even more). From his smart TV remote, and his phone APPs, he can control everything in the house, from lights, to heating, to the garage doors, to switching on and off the alarm. (Thanks to Acoustic Creations for the surround system.) If the alarm is ever triggered, they get a notification on their phones, no matter where they are, the nice work of Wolf Security Systems and Jeremy Downey. Now for the gorgeous stuff! The interior décor and art. Everywhere you look, you notice little pops of color. The walls and furniture create an almost blank slate – neutral grays and whites, modern, clean lines and plenty

32 Southport Magazine / SEPTEMBER 2017 / www.SouthportMag.com

The brains of the house are all housed in an easy-to-access cupboard in the entertainment center built-ins. of texture and variety of materials. This was intentional so Susan could really make the ART the focus of the home, and not the furniture. Gwen Tanner at Mad River had a hand in the furniture selection as well. When the DeLaneys travel, Susan likes to pick up art instead of souvenirs. This is a brilliant way to include style, color and culture into your home. Not to mention all the nice memories that come with them. I’ve included some of the standout pieces, but to really appreciate them, they have to be seen in person. Susan also buys art here locally as well, and is always on the lookout for her next acquisition.

“I love this home and to be able to share it is a dream.” John’s favorite spot is on the front porch. He had the porch built as close to the sidewalk as the city would allow – so he could chat to the neighbors and friendly passers-by. But Susan warns, once he starts talking, you might be there for hours. John says, “When people walk in, they think it’s a renovation, not a new build”. That’s a pretty big complement to the architect, designers and contractor. They’ve been able to keep enough charm and southern coastal style to replicate a home from the early 1900, but make it modern and timeless.

One of the coolest things in this house is the second floor gym. In this gym, two walls are completely mirrors, but they are glassless. That’s right – glassless mirrors, it’s a modern alternative that is used in the Hubble Telescope. It’s reflection is truer than glass, it’s light weight and durable. I touched it – it feels like jello. But it’s clearer and cleaner than a brand new glass mirror. The gym not only has all the top of the line equipment – it also houses a walk in sauna, perfect for after that extreme workout. The DeLaneys walk or ride their bikes everywhere. They hardly ever drive in town. That was one of the selling points of Southport as well. It’s walkable, flat with everything close. They also have a huge garage, and a second mini garage for their electric golf cart, they admit they hardly ever use.

I love this simple photo by Gary Dorothy. The colorful rooftops create interest in the guest bath.

BIZ Q & A sometimes hard.

3. Describe the average customers computer “emergency”.

Viruses are a big one. If you can’t get online, you can’t do anything. Most customers need it right now, need to get online today. (to check Email and social media.) Beware of Scams… If you get a call claiming to be “Microsoft” – that Never happens – it’s fake. Microsoft is not going to call you. If you are Online – pop-up that says – computer infected, call a number. DO NOT DO IT, it’s a scam.

4. How many employees work at Techson? And what skills/ education requirements do they need to have?

We have a team of 6 employees, They need the knowledge and background, an IT degree is good. The desire to learn, and you must have good technical skills, thought process, and can troubleshoot.

5. Our devices can hardly keep pace with changes in technology. What is a realistic expectation for the life of our laptop/ desktop computers?

Owner, Bill Mason and his co-worker Craig

Got Geek?

6. Should we buy the warranty????

If you drop things a lot – yes, otherwise no.

Tech Issues Solved at Techson Computer STORY BY LESLIE FOSTER

I

f “technology intelligence” were a measurable thing I’m quite sure I would score pretty low. I can navigate my smartphone, and know the basic programs on my desktop, but beyond that I remain a tech rookie. Thankfully, Techson Computers On Oak Island is ready, willing and able to help me and others like me who are in need of repairs, updates, and emergency assistance.

Its validating to learn from Bill that all devices, be they a tablet, android, Apple product or PC have a “ lifespan” and are vulnerable during that lifespan to viruses and user failure. ( failure to make daily updates, Guilty! Failure to install the best virus software( not MacAffee, apparently). We all use them We all need them. Fortunately or not, depending upon your point of view, technology and our connection to it are here to stay. That being said, it’s great to have a competent team of tech savvy guys at the ready when are devices fail. On that note, Hit Enter, scroll down and read.....

Buying one today, a laptop last 4-5 years. Towers – top of the line, can last 7 years. You have 4 categories: Value, Good, Better, Best. You should stick to Better and Best. Make sure to get an I-5 processor or above. AMD, Intel are the best 2 processors.

1.Describe your business, and how you came to be a part of the Oak Island community.

We are a full service computer and electronic repair shop, with residential and business clients. We make Housecalls too. (TV repairs in shop.) Cell phone, tablets, programming for businesses. Smart home technology, connecting lights, thermostats to your phone, etc.. TV sound system, using Amazon’s Alexa. This is something the community needs. Supply, Bolivia. We are a transplant family from Michigan, my dad has been here for more than 21 years. I had the opportunity to come down here and start this business 7 years ago, and never looked back, and be close to my dad.

2. Have you ever come across a computer problem that stumped you?

You can get stumped, it’s all about how to find the problem and solution. I never give up, I always find an answer. Solution is sometimes easy – finding that solution is

7. Please explain! How do “viruses” get into a computer? Where do they come from? (aliens? The 3rd world? The anti-social guy in the room upstairs?)

Vulnerability not doing system updates, virus scans – changing every day. Security updates needs to be done every day – and make sure your virus protection is working and enabled. Good antivirus software is key. Avira, Bit Defender, Kaspersky and the three Consistently best on the market. (Norton & Mcafee – get hacked all the time)

8. Who is your idol? Technically speaking?

Wazniak – & Nicola Tesla - without those people we wouldn’t have computers of today.

9. How “ secure “ is traditional password protection? What’s the future for computer security look like?

8 characters, cap, lower, number, character – the majority of people are ok if you

Southport Magazine 2016-2017 SOI Chamber Small Business of the Year Winner

BIZ Q&A use that. If you have words and numbers – most passwords can be hacked in a matter of minutes. Truth is biological DNA, finger prints, retinal scanning is the future. RF chips in people’s hands, I’m not a fan, but it may be where things are going. Snapshop of face, (facial recognition) – your face is your password, that technology has been around for 7 years now – but it’s just not implemented.

10. What brand of smartphone, tablet or computer do you own?

I have a Samsung phone. Andoid phones are best. I have both a Mac and PC (computers), and an Apple iPad.

FUN QUESTIONS: Favorite Food – Pizza Favorite Author – Ogmandino (anything by him) Music – Eclectic, The last concert was a Led Zepplin cover band. But I have the Lala Land Soundtrack too. Travel – I’d love to go to Machu Pichu. I enjoyed ND – Fargo, Blue Ridge Mountains, and mountains of West Virginia. I enjoy the outdoors, oh and also Boulder Colorado.
