Jeff Stites came through with another great cover shot this month. The tulips in full bloom no doubt part of the beautification project in Southport make the perfect picturesque addition to the quaintness of the downtown shops. Spring ushers in almost too much to cover in this issue. From Egg Hunts to Markets to Spring Fest and Marathons. This is truly the beginning of the outdoor activities in the area and community fun. Every weekend is full of fun for the whole family,
so don’t miss out on all the events, entertainment and music. Local venues are back in swing and the tourists are on their way. Enjoy the nice breezes and everything our area has to offer this Spring. Check out the full calendar starting on page 50. And if you need a great photographer, give Jeff a call or email. www.oakislandphotoworks.com

Historic Bike Tours
It’s time for an outdoor tour of Southport BY AMI BROWN
I
f you enjoy the outdoors along with learning about your local history, then this is the tour for you. Explore Southport’s rich history, maritime roots and famous filming locations with this Spring and Summer bike tour.
Ernest Hemingway once said the best way to explore France is on a bicycle. He could have said the same thing about Southport. The beautiful, picturesque town of Southport offers a great place to ride a bicycle. The Adventure Company, at 807-A Howe St. in Southport, is taking advantage of the situation. This outdoor equipment business will take you on a journey with its Historical Southport Bicycle Tours.”The guide takes you to historic buildings and tells you about previous owners, she gives you a lot of the
history of Southport and shows you a lot of plant matter,” said Jane Henderson, an Adventure Company employee. The tour includes locations like Southport’s old jail and cemetery in the route. Although Southport’s history dates back several hundred years, the Old Brunswick County Jail is a part of the town’s more recent past. It was built in 1904 and was used by law enforcement officers until 1971. It houses two cells with four bunks each. The first jail in the area was built in the 1820s complete with stocks. Bicyclists might remember the jail from

the movie “Crimes of the Heart.” Sissy Spacek was incarcerated there after she shot her husband, played by Beeson Carroll. It also appeared in “American Gothic”
and “Summer Catch.” For even juicier history, the Old Smithville Burying Ground offers plenty of good stories. Smithville is the old name of South-

CURRENTS port, used up until 1886. Some interesting people buried here include General Robert Howe. Visitors will also see a memorial for Revolutionary War soldier and state senator Benjamin Smith, for which Smithville was named. Of course, even without the great stories, a bicycle ride through Southport is a treat. With very little traffic, the streets are lined with Victorian homes shaded with huge live oaks draped in Spanish moss. A cool breeze always blows off the Cape Fear River where small boats sail by, motor boats whiz through the waves and the occasional massive tanker ship plows by, a spectacular sight if you are lucky enough to see it. You can even catch a dolphin or two jumping during the warm weather. Pelicans dive and hawks soar overhead for the bird watchers too. It’s never a dull moment on the waterfront in Southport, which makes this bike tour even more special and unique to the area. For more information go to www.TheAdventureCompany.net.

HEALTH Fit in the Garden
Preparing your body for the round STORY BY BRIAN TULLY, MS, EP-C
S
pring has sprung and the yard and garden will be in need of tending to. Are you ready to reap the many health and fitness benefits of gardening without feeling the burden and strains of the work?
Numerous studies have shown that getting out in nature has tremendous health benefits, both mentally and physically. Many times it is simply being surrounded by the many living things in the great outdoors, the vitamin D from the sunshine, the open spaces to move your body more, and the general connection with nature itself. Now let’s discuss some of the things that you can do to get the most from your
gardening time. Preparation Before heading outside, it is a good idea to do a little prep work. Protect your skin by covering up and applying sunscreen. Skin cancer is real, no need to help it along. Fill up a large bottle of water to keep with you. If you prefer it cold, be sure to use an insulated container. Warmup and loosen up the muscles the same

HEALTH way you would prepare for a workout. You don’t want to go lifting, pulling, twisting, and pushing out in the yard with stiff muscles. Some key areas to focus on loosening would be the hips and low back, front and inner thighs, calves, shoulders, and wrists. This shouldn’t take more than 5-10 minutes, but your body will be thanking you tomorrow. Balance of Activity Limit the repetitive stress of doing the same thing for the entire time you are out there working. If you have a larger task to complete, break it up over multiple days. This will prevent the 2-3 hour marathon of pulling weeds. At the very least, try to switch sides frequently. For example, if you are raking or weeding try doing 10 pulls with one side of your body and then 10 pulls with the opposite side. This will not only lighten the workload for the one side, but it will help keep your body in balance and incorporate some fantastic mental stimulus as well. Save Your Back I have seen many people out working in their yard doing the straight leg, bend over from the low back and work position. This puts a massive strain on the point of fold; the low back. Remember it is best to limit the direct torque on the low back by removing the loaded strain from that area. A simple solution is to bring a small gardening stool to sit on, or even a thick pad to kneel on. This will shorten the distance to the work area and allow you to decrease the load on the back. A huge back saver! Also try to limit twisting from the low back. This is common when shoveling. Rather than scoop, twist, dump…try scoop with your legs, keep the load in front of you, move your feet to the unload location, then dump.
Hydration and Breaks When you are outside in the sun and doing work, it is important to stay hydrated. This is where that big bottle of water you filled before going outside comes in handy. Try to take 1-2 large mouthfuls every 15-20 minutes. Of course, the amount of water and frequency can also increase depending on the level of heat and work effort. Remember, it is almost always better to be slightly over hydrated than under hydrated. Also be sure to change positions frequently. Take a walk around the yard, do some gentle stretches, take a step back into the shade and admire your work. Limit Frustrations No one likes to work on a yard or garden that simply keeps dying on them. It can be a very frustrating task to continue to put in all the work and see nothing come from it. Do yourself a favor and check with local gardening sources to help you choose the right things for your climate, soil, and amount of sunlight. Reap the benefits of your hard work; experience the uplifting feeling of a well maintained yard and flourishing garden. If gardening is your thing, I hope you will utilize the above tips to even further improve your experience. If not, many of the tips above will still carry over to your outdoor activity of choice. Either way, I hope you will get out and enjoy all the wonderful benefits being outdoors can offer. As always, if you have additional questions regarding this month’s article or have a topic you would like to see covered in future articles; please don’t hesitate to reach out to me via email. SAVOR Peddling Fish & More The New Fish Peddler Market Offers Fresh Food and Much More STORY BY KASS FINCHER
W
ith its wide-open garage doors and interesting offerings, the Marketplace on Howe beckons those walking by to stop in and visit. An open-air seafood and produce market with an eclectic mix of antiques and nautical crafts, the Marketplace is sure to become one of Southport’s favorite destinations.
Though they have only been open since October, owners Scott and Michelle Buff, along with general manager Josh Pendleton, are putting their personal touches on the store’s offerings. Michelle takes care of the antiques and crafts selection, getting many of them from her mother-in-law Betty’s family estate. Josh built his desk at the store from wood and chicken coop materials he recycled from that estate. And central to the business is the seafood. Scott’s parents – Ron and Betty Buff – run the boathouse in Holden Beach, aka the Fish Peddler. Most of the fish at the Marketplace comes from their own nine offshore boats and one shrimp boat, all of which go 20-50 miles out to sea for three days at a time. Besides the fish they get right off their own boats, the Marketplace also orders fresh seafood from other suppliers. Pendleton describes his approach. “We offer fresh seafood at all times, most of it coming from North Carolina,” he says. “I also get salmon from Canada, mussels from Prince Edward Island, steamer clams from Maine. I can order about anything people want.”
The best sellers, what Pendleton calls “the big three,” are shrimp, salmon and grouper. They also sell a lot of clams and snapper. A frozen section offers lobster tails, crab meat and crab cakes. Free range local eggs, a variety of canned sauces and jellies and Conrad & Hinkle pimento cheese out of Lexington are distinctive

sellers. The store also offers a variety of fresh produce, some of which comes from the Asheville and Raleigh farmers’ markets, but will also be sourced locally during the peak season. And Swain’s in Oak Island provides the homemade pies and cakes. It’s easy to see the homey touch the Marketplace exudes with its product selection and displays. And Josh and Michelle put their personal touches on the store through their friendliness and welcoming approach. Josh keeps little fish bites in a bag nearby for his canine friends who stop in. One of the neighborhood dogs, whom Josh dubs “my nephew,” makes a daily trip there on his own to get his treat. Michelle is active in SOAR, and has never met
a dog she didn’t love. As spring arrives, the folks at the Marketplace and Fish Peddler look forward to serving a growing clientele with all things fresh – seafood, produce and an everchanging craft selection. Stop in and visit with them; you’ll be glad you did.

Military Historian Greg Briggs to Speak CONTRIBUTED BY CIVAL WAR ROUND TABLE

t the Tuesday, April 2 meeting of the Brunswick Civil War Round Table, Greg Biggs, military historian and an expert on military flags, will be the guest speaker. If you are a war enthusiast or history buff, then you need to make this meeting and consider joining this Brunswick County club!
CIVIL WAR ROUND TABLE MEETING
His topic is entitled, “Banners in the Breeze.” The meeting will be held at Hatch Auditorium on Caswell Beach. Registration and refreshments begin at 6:15p.m. The program begins at 7p.m. Battle flags are rarely the topic at most Civil War meetings and discussions, despite their being of enormous significance to both Union and Confederate armies. Soldiers placed great importance on the flags of their regiments. They would sacri-
fice their lives defending the flag to protect it from capture by the enemy. The respect for the flag was partly a matter of pride and morale. But it also had a practical aspect closely associated with the conditions on the battlefield. They served as a visual communication when voice commands and bugle calls could not be heard. Armies at the time had no electronic means to communicate, so a visual rallying point was essential, and soldiers were trained to follow the flag. A popular song of the Civil War, “The Battle

MOORE STREET 910-363-4098 Civil War armies, both Union and Confederates, took pride in their regimental flags, and treated with great reverence. The flags were critical in battles as they were a rallying point, marking the position of the regiment on the battlefield. Often it was a very confusing place filled with smoke and noise. So, a visual rallying point was essential, and soldiers were trained to follow the flag. Because they were conspicuous in battle, they were often used as targets for rifle and artillery fire. Of course, the mortality rate of color bearers was high! On the other hand, the loss of a regimental flag was a colossal disgrace. If captured and carried away by the enemy, the entire regiment would be shamed.
Cry of Freedom,” made mention of how “we’ll rally ‘round the flag, boys.” The reference to the flag, while ostensibly a patriotic boast, does actually play upon the practical use of flags as a rallying point on the battlefield. Distinctive battle flags of the Confederate armies were used beginning in 1861. The goal was to create flags that looked completely different to the United States Stars and Stripes used by Union regiments. In 1862, each army followed its own path. The Army of Northern Virginia continued to expand on its Southern Cross pattern, while Western armies created flags that looked nothing like those more famous flags. In essence, the modern myth of “the Confederate battle flag” is dismissed as many flags with distinctive designs prove that no such single flag existed during the Civil War. The bulk of these battle flag patterns were created in 1862, many of which continued for the rest of the war with some variations. The meeting’s guest speaker is a career military historian for more than fifty years, conducting extensive study of military flags, consulting with a number of museums, archives, libraries, and authors, and lecturing across the country to Civil War round-tables and history groups, including presenting flag programs to the Museum
of the Confederacy, the National Civil War Museum, as well as contributing to the Civil War Trust’s video series entitled, Flags of the Civil War. In addition, Greg is an experienced tour guide and the author of numerous articles which have appeared in Civil War Regiments journal, Blue and Gray Magazine, Civil War News, Citizens Companion, Civil War Trust’s Hallowed Ground, as well as online publications. Greg resides in Clarksville, Tennessee with his wife Karel and their four cats named for Confederate Cavalrymen! He is president of the Clarksville Civil War Round Table, and an officer of the Nashville Civil War Round Table. Everyone is welcome to hear this interesting yet seldom discussed topic at the Round Table’s April 2 meeting. The visitor fee is $10, and can be applied toward the $25 annual membership dues. Lighthouse Run
Historic Beach Run is set for April 13 BY AMI BROWN
A
ll runners unite! Whether you are a seasoned runner or just a casual jogger or walker, the Oak Island Lighthouse Run / Walk is a spectacle and event you won’t want to miss out on this year. For 21 years now this has been a community event that everyone can cheer for.
Oak Island Lighthouse Run & Walk 1/2 Marathon,10K, 5K & 1 Mile Fun Run Date: April 13, 2019 According to the Southport-Oak Island Chamber of Commerce Website, the Oak Island Lighthouse Run & Walk began 20 years ago when Clarence Willie, a Chamber Board member, avid runner and retired U.S. Marine Lieutenant Colonel suggested the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce organize a 10k run/walk. The Chamber Board appointed Clarence Willie the Chair and with great enthusiasm the first run was held on April 10,1999. We strive to make this event safe, fun, and enjoyable for all fitness levels. We hope you agree, the Oak Island Lighthouse 1/2 marathon, 10K and 5K courses showcase the best scenery on the North Carolina Coast. What other course can you see salt marshes, the Atlantic Ocean, wide beautiful beaches, and have a lighthouse as a cheerleader? RACE HISTORY The Oak Island Lighthouse Run & Walk began 21 years ago when Clarence Willie, a Chamber Board member, avid runner and retired U.S. Marine Lieutenant Colonel suggested the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce organize a 10k run/walk. The Chamber Board appointed Clarence Willie the Chair and with great enthusiasm the first run was held on April 10,1999. In 2006, the Oak Island Lighthouse Race under the leadership of Chairman Seth Robbins added the first 5k. This was a popular addition especially for those who didn’t want to tackle the G.V. Barbee Oak Island Bridge. In 2012, the phenomenal growth of the event led organizers to rethink the logistics of a point to point run and with the addition of the 1/2 marathon it was the perfect opportunity for route changes. Beginning in 2012, all the runs began and ended at the N.C. Baptist Assembly at Fort Caswell.
Due to the Easter Holiday, the Lighthouse Run is a week earlier in 2019. We hope you will join us and have a great run on Saturday, April 13, 2019. In 2016, after record participation in 2015, we outgrew our location and were compelled to move the race from the NC Baptist Assembly at Fort Caswell to Middleton Park Extension in Oak Island. We added back the 1 Mile Fun Run and a Costume Contest to go with a Jimmy Buffett theme. In 2017, they added the Masters (40+) and Grand Masters (50+) Overall Male and Female divisions to the Half, 10k and 5k and in keeping with the Jimmy Buffett theme the finisher medal as a margarita glass on a lanyard. In 2018, the event moved away from the Jimmy Buffett theme and focused on creating the best experience for the runners while highlighting the uniquely beautiful coastal community we call home. Highlights for 2019 include: Arrive early on Saturday and participate in the Chalk Art at the Start from 6a.m.7a.m. Sponsored by Pescado y Amor Paint Studio. Enjoy a race day stretch led by Ilene Evans, yoga instructor at 7 a.m. and again at 7:45 a.m. After your run enjoy your drink tokens with a beer from our local brewery, Check Six Brewery, or take your token to one of the participating locations throughout our town. Celebrate your run with a complimentary SnoBall. Half Marathon Finisher Medal is a 3-D medal.
THANKS TO THE SPONSORS: In partnership with the Chamber, this event is possible with the continued support and cooperation from the Wilmington Road Runners, Town of Oak Island, Town

Baby Bird 101
Spring ushers in plenty of “helpless” baby birds, but they’re probably just fine STORY BY AMI BROWN
H
ave you ever seen a tiny baby bird on the ground? Of course you have. Sometimes you need to assist, but most of the time you actually don’t. Our region is a haven for all types of songbirds, raptors, water fowl and coastal sea life. This article will help you if unsure of what to do if you find a tiny baby bird.
WHAT DO I DO IF I FIND A BABY BIRD?
At some point, nearly everyone who steps outside in the Spring, finds a baby bird—one that is unable to fly and seems lost or abandoned. Your first impulse may be to help the young bird, but in the majority of cases the young bird doesn’t need help. Here’s how to determine whether to take action: The first thing to do is to figure out if the baby bird is a nestling or a fledgling. Most of the baby birds people find are fledglings. These are young birds that have just left the nest, and are still under the care of their parents. They do not need our help. Fledglings are feathered and capable of hopping or flitting around, with toes that can tightly grip your finger or a twig. These youngsters are generally adorable and fluffy, and have a tiny stub of a tail. When fledglings leave their nest they rarely return, so even if you see the nest it’s not a good idea to put the bird back in—it will hop right back out. Usually there is no reason to intervene at all beyond putting the bird on a nearby perch out of harm’s way and keeping your own pets indoors.
The parents are probably wathcing and feeding the young bird on the ground. You can watch from a distance to make sure the parents are returning to care for the fledgling. If the baby bird is bald, un-feathered or sparsely feathered and not capable of hopping, walking, standing, or gripping tightly to your finger, it’s a nestling. If so, the nest is probably nearby. If you can find the nest (it may be well hidden), put the bird back as quickly as possible. Don’t worry—parent birds do not recognize their young by smell. They normally do not abandon a baby if it has been touched by humans. If the nest has been destroyed you can make a new one, place the chick back inside and watch to see if the parents come back. If you have found both parents dead, the young bird is injured, you can’t find the nest, or are absolutely certain that the bird was orphaned, then your best course of action is to bring it to a wildlife rehabilitator. (Like: Sea Biscuit Wildlife Rescue on Oak Island) Bottom line: remember that the vast majority of “abandoned” baby birds are perfectly healthy fledglings whose parents are nearby and watching out for them.

CURRENTS According to the Earth Day Network: Nature’s gifts to our planet are the millions of species that we know and love, and many more that remain to be discovered. Unfortunately, human beings have upset the balance of nature and, as a result, the world is facing the greatest rate of extinction since we lost the dinosaurs more than 60 million years ago. But unlike the fate of the dinosaurs, the rapid extinction of species in our world today is the result of human activity. The global destruction and rapid reduction of plant and wildlife populations are linked to causes driven by human activity: climate change, deforestation, habitat loss, trafficking and poaching, unsustainable agriculture, pollution and pesticides to name a few. The impacts are far reaching. All living things have an intrinsic value, and each plays a unique role in the complex web of life. We must work together to protect endangered and threatened species: bees, coral reefs, elephants, giraffes, insects, whales and more.
The good news is that the rate of extinctions can be slowed, and many of our declining, threatened and endangered species can still recover when we work together now to build a united global movement of consumers, voters, educators, faith leaders, and scientists to demand immediate action. Earth Day Network is asking people to join our Protect our Species campaign. that embraces nature and its values. Go to www.earthday.org to find out more.
ONE BILLION PEOPLE
Earth Day is now a global event each year, and we believe that more than 1 billion people in 192 countries now take part in what is the largest civic-focused day of action in the world. It is a day of political action and civic participation. People march, sign petitions, meet with their elected officials, plant trees, clean up their towns and roads. Corporations and governments use it to
God’s greatest creations, humans, biodiversity and the planet that we all live on. Earth Day Network, the organization that leads Earth Day worldwide, has chosen as the theme for 2018 to End Plastic Pollution, including creating support for a global effort to eliminate primarily single-use plastics along with global regulation for the disposal of plastics. EDN is educating millions of people about the health and other risks associated with the use and disposal of plastics, including pollution of our oceans, water, and wildlife, and about the growing body of evidence that plastic waste is creating serious global problems. From poisoning and injuring marine life to the ubiquitous presence of plastics in our food to disrupting human hormones and causing major life-threatening diseases and early puberty, the exponential growth of plastics is threatening our planet’s survival. Make sure to come down to Middleot make pledges and announce sustainability measures. Faith leaders, including Pope Park on Oak Island on April 18 for local Francis, connect Earth Day with protecting Eath Day events.

explain what an NDA is? —Julia W., Wilmington
A: A Non-Disclosure Agreement is a contract that helps prevent a business’ sensitive information from being shared without permission. While you may think of an NDA as something only businesses with highly sensitive trade secrets or product innovations need to have, the truth is that businesses of all types might benefit from one. An NDA can protect customer lists; sales leads lists; business and marketing plans; and even pricing strategies. Most NDAs are relatively short agreements. Some of the common elements in NDAs include:
• A list of parties involved • Identification of information that should be kept confidential • Exclusions (identifying what or when information doesn’t get confidential treatment – for example: what is already publicly known) • Scope of the obligation to keep information confidential (usually, not to share the sensitive information with anyone else and to not use it themselves) • Term of the NDA (how long the information must be kept private, typically 2 - 5 years) • What happens if there’s a breach of the NDA (legal steps and resolution). Call SCORE Cape Fear at 910-452-5395 for more information and to set up a free mentoring session.

NO-BAKE TRUFFLE EGGS INGREDIENTS:
1 package of Oreo Cookies 1 package of Cream Cheese 1 Dark Chocolate Bar 1 White Chocolate Bar
DIRECTIONS:
Place the Oreo Cookies into a blender or food processor. They need to be ground up finely for best results. Add in the softened cream cheese, blend until creamy smooth. Use an ice-cream scooper to make egg shape balls. (Or roll by hand) Place on parchment paper carefully and put in the fridge until firm. (about an hour) Melt a dark chocolate (or milk chocolate) bar in the microwave until smooth. Using a spoon, drop each egg into melted chocolate, given them a nice coating. Place back on parchment paper. Place all eggs back into the fridge. Using a second chocolate bar (white) for additional decoration. Melt bar and using a piping bag to decorate the eggs. Or you can just lightly drizzle with a small spoon. You can get creative and let the kids or grandchildren put sprinkles on or powdered sugar, when the chocolate is still warm. You could also use pastel colors by dropping in a couple drops of food coloring into the white melted chocolate. 34 Southport Magazine / APRIL 2019 / www.SouthportMag.com
DIRECTIONS:
Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Beat butter and granulated sugar with a mixer on medium speed until pale and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Beat in eggs, 1 at a time. Reduce speed to low; add flour mixture, and beat until combined. Add vanilla. Wrap dough in plastic, and refrigerate for 1 hour. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Roll out dough to 1/8-inch thickness on a lightly floured surface. Cut out egg shapes with a 2 1/2-inch oval cutter. Transfer cookies to parchment-lined baking sheets, spacing about 1 inch apart. Refrigerate until firm, about 30 minutes. Bake until edges are golden, 8 to 10 minutes. Upon removing from oven, cut into pieces with a sharp knife (if they’re cool, it will be difficult to create clean edges). Let cool. Using a pastry bag fitted with a 1/8-inch tip and filled with royal icing, decorate as desired. Sprinkle with sanding sugar while icing is wet. If adding dots or stripes, let base layer dry first. We’d love to publish a photo of you with one of our recipes, so make sure to send it in to editor@lelandmag.com

CHEERS Recycling Beer Style Let’s be responsible when it comes to litter STORY BY JEFF STITES
L
iving in such a beautiful environment brings with it the responsibility to be very aware of the way we treat our home. As a beer drinker, and beer salesman, it breaks my heart to see cans, bottles and six-pack ringers littering our beaches and waterways.
It is especially sad because the beer industry has been, and continues to be, an innovator when it comes to sustainability and recyclable packaging. One of the latest pioneering ideas comes from the Saltwater micro-brewery in Delray Beach, Florida. The brewery has created a six-pack holder made from the grain byproducts of the brewing products that is not only biodegradable and compostable,
but actually edible by sea life (or people if they are so inclined). The drawback is its cost, but as the idea catches on, economies of scale could kick in and make this the packaging of the future. In the meantime, many brewers are moving from plastic sixpack ringers to cardboard boxes. It’s not edible, but it’s biodegradable and much safer than plastic. Another future trend is moving from

CHEERS bottles toward cans. There was a time when craft or “high quality” beer meant bottled beer, but Oskar Blues changed all that by offering its entire portfolio exclusively in cans. I’ve written of the advantages of canned beer before from a quality control perspective, but they are also more easily recycled than bottles. More and more craft brewers are jumping on the can bandwagon, including Asheville’s Highland Brewing among many others. Look for these on shelves this summer. The aluminum beer can is itself an environmental breakthrough. After Prohibition, brewers and consumers wanted a “throw-away” package for beer and soda, one that didn’t need to be returned to the retailer and shipped back to the bottler for refilling. While this was a way of recycling, it was expensive in both money and resources. The tin can was introduced in the 1930s and took off immediately with consumers and producers. The trouble was, it really was a “throw away” package. By the 1950as a “Ban the Can” movement had begun in response to the beer and soda cans littering our nation’s landscape.
This is where Bill Coors, of Adolph Coors Brewing, enters the picture. Bill was both an environmentalist upset by the sight cans bearing his family’s name littering up the countryside and an engineer/ chemist with a knack for problem solving. He determined that aluminum presented an elegant solution. Aluminum is easily recycled, and new cans can be made from
old at a small fraction of the cost of producing them from newly made aluminum. Also, Bill had invented a cold-filtering process that replaced pasteurization and avoided the necessity of heating up the newly brewed beer (remember that heat is one of the enemies of beer) that couldn’t be used on the old tin cans because they had a seam. Aluminum is pliable enough to mold a seamless can, thereby making the Coors brewing process work the same for cans and bottles. It seemed to Bill like a win-win, both environmentally friendly and cost-effective. The beverage industry didn’t see it that way. The beer, soda and, of course, tin can industries all came together in opposition to the Coors plan. A study was even commissioned to demonstrate that
recycling ran counter to human nature and so could never work. But Bill persevered, even requiring all of the Coors distributors to serve as drop off points for cans headed to recycling. Long story short, his model worked. Coors Brewing Company thrived, aluminum cans quickly became the industry standard, and recycling has become a normal part of our everyday lives. A big CHEERS to Bill Coors, who passed away last year at the age of 91, for seeing the future and working to make it happen. And let’s also raise a toast to today’s pioneers in the brewing business who are working to make our favorite beverage safer and more sustainable. And let’s remember to do our part as consumers. Always recycle your empties and don’t you dare toss that can or bottle on the beach or in a waterway. We’re better than that.

The Southport-Oak Island Chamber of Commerce shares their mission STORY BY KASS FINCHER
L
ocal businesses and organizations are lucky to have such a strong Chamber behind them. Their mission is clear and they are making a difference in our local community, one business at a time.
How would you describe the mission of the Chamber?
The mission of the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce is to foster and create a pro-business environment in the Southport-Oak Island area, support our member businesses so that they may thrive, and act as a conduit between our business community and the community at large.
How many members do you have, and what are the requirements to join?
We have almost 500 members. There is an annual membership investment to be a member. The base annual membership is $283 per year, which is comparable with other chambers in the region. Any business, non-profit or individual who conducts or supports business in our service area and/or believes in our mission is welcome. The process of joining starts with the business or individual voluntarily completing the application. After the Chamber’s Board of Directors approves the application, the business/non-profit or organization is a member. Membership investments are renewed automatically each July 1st.
What are the primary benefits of being a Chamber member?
There are many benefits of being a member and each business will value them differently. Membership in the Chamber will work for a business if the business works the membership. We welcome the opportunity to go over them with any business. They can easily be broken down to categories: networking, promotion, and education.
What are the Chamber’s regular meetings and networking events?
Monthly – Business Networking After Hours & Coffee with the Girls
Coconut Coconut Cake Cake
Chocolate Raspberry Chocolate Chip Chip Raspberry CoffeeCoffee Cake Cake and Blueberry Crumb and Blueberry Crumb Cake Cake
Weekly – Business Connections Annually – Annual Meeting Standing Committee meetings are also held monthly – Education Committee, Tourism Committee, Business Development, Ambassadors Committee Meeting. Every event we hold is considered a networking opportunity – seminars, public events like the Coastal Consumer Showcase, US Open. If business people are volunteering, they are just as likely to find connections between the members or be able to promote their business.
What goals does the Chamber have for this year? Are there new initiatives that you will be exploring?
The Chamber Board of Directors reviews its program of work monthly and makes changes based upon the feedback from the membership and the budget. The Chamber Board of Directors balances opportunities with resources available. We don’t shy away from trying something to see if it works and if it doesn’t, we scrap it and try something else. This year’s focus has been on preparing for and lessening the effects of the temporary closing of the G.V. Barbee Bridge to Oak Island. The “It’s Worth the Drive Go Local Campaign” is in full swing with hopes of transitioning from the bridge project in April to the effects of the Highway 211 widening project. Reminding the community, we stress the benefits and need to Go Local not only for their retail shopping needs but their dining and professional services. In 2018, we held the inaugural Southport-Oak Island Area Restaurant Week. We will continue to build upon its success in 2019. Through our partnership with SCORE Cape Fear, we are offering a new seminar series. In November we are planning a Kid Expo. The Kid Expo gives the next generation of entrepreneurs an opportunity to sell
their wares and learn about all aspects of running a business. We are always looking for the next initiative that will support our members and our mission.

Brunswick County is a geographically large and economically diverse community. All chambers of commerce are separate and work for the betterment of their own communities. Sometimes those purposes do lend themselves to collaboration. Leadership Brunswick County is one such program in which three of the Chambers in the County and Brunswick Community College work together.
Anything else you’d like to relate to the community?
We are a non-profit organization and not a government agency. Therefore, we rely upon memberships and fundraisers for financial support. The work of the Chamber is to foster and a create a pro-business environment which will support all businesses in our community. However, as a membership-based organization, the Chamber heavily promotes its member businesses. We have heard a misconception that the Chamber is for “big” business. However, the vast majority of the almost 500 members are sole proprietors to small businesses and our program of work is centered around them. Any size business is welcome to join and that includes sole proprietors, home-based, small and large businesses. The base annual membership is $283 per year, which is comparable with other chambers in the region.

ART BEAT Lovely Landscapes Lee Selbe’s Watercolors capture local beauty STORY BY CARLA EDSTROM
A
wonderful vacation three years ago turned into a life of living by the beach and a retirement filled with painting award winning watercolor paintings. Artist Lee Selbe found himself in love with our area and has easily fit into the Southport art community with his exceptional watercolor landscapes and seascape paintings. Born and raised in West Virginia, Selbe was an art major at Marshall University and spent his career teaching art in Elementary, Middle School, High School, and adult education.
“I always enjoyed painting as a child, and continued throughout my life,” he said. “My greatest supporter was my
mother. As a child she convinced me that I had talent. The confidence that she instilled in me motivated me to practice and improve over the years. I have taken watercolor classes and workshops every chance that I have had available to me until this point in my life. Now I have to pick and
chose my opportunities based on schedule and cost.” “I have enjoyed art and the pursuit of artistic knowledge and skill for as long as I can remember,” said Selbe. “Growing up in a small town, the opportunities were very limited. There were no art stores,
bookstores, libraries or classes. Like many individuals with artistic ambitions, I was greatly hampered by a need to eat, pay my bills and provide for my family. Now I am retired and making the most of my opportunity to learn and improve my artistic

ART BEAT potential,” he said. “My mom is gone now, but I am fortunate to have a lady by my side that supports and encourages me every day, Vivian Maynor, who is a skilled and knowledgeable artist,” he said. Many things can arouse the muse within an artist, such as love, religion, politics and nature. It’s not surprising that the natural environment is a big influence for artists and Selbe is no exception. “The work of others and the natural beauty of the area beaches inspire me. I take photos, do sketches and develop value studies and color studies leading to a finished composition,” Selbe said. “A value study as I use it is a quick miniature monochromatic painting or pencil sketch of the intended composition utilizing white, black and lighter to darker values. On several occasions the lightest light and darkest dark are placed together to draw attention to the center of attention.” Selbe also uses color studies to develop his paintings. “A color study is small quickly executed painting of the planned composition intended to be a dry run of the final work. It allows for changes to be made before a huge investment is made in time and materials,” he said. With so many opportunities to learn and hone his art, Selbe enjoys the active art community that the Southport area has to offer. “At Oak Island you can participate in a painting group at the recreation center, attend Art Guild meetings, exhibit your work on the walls and attend workshops all in the same building,” he said. “A short distance away you can participate in painting sessions while enjoying wine with your fellow students. The Oak Island Senior Center offers a sales gallery for many forms of art including paintings,” he said. “Southport features the Franklin Square Gallery for a premier sales venue, open painting time, inspiration from the constantly changing 2 and 3D exhibits and the Richard Staat painting group for an incredible artistic learning environment. Many of the upscale Southport shops include local artist sculptures, prints and original paintings,” he said. “Being invited to participate in the Richard (Dick) Staat painting group is the greatest learning experience I have been fortunate enough to become involved in. Some of the participants also conduct workshops and teach professionally. Just being in the same room, observing their process and hearing their comments and critiques is an invaluable artistic education.”
“The natural beauty of the area beaches inspire me. I take photos, do sketches and develop value studies and color studies leading to a finished composition,” Selbe continues to study art and has attended workshops by many professional artists including Jim McIntosh, Roger Tatum, Nita Engle, Tony Couch, and Joe Fettingis to name only a few. He has been a past member of the WV Allied Artists and the South Bend Watercolor Society and he is now a member of the Oak Island Art Guild, an exhibiting member of the Associated Artists of Southport, and a participating member with the Dick Staat painting group at the Franklin Square Gallery, in Southport. With Selbe’s vast experience in every aspect of art, his advice to all budding artists invaluable. “Don’t be afraid to get started and don’t be too critical of your work. If you are not satisfied, set it aside and look at it later, with fresh eyes. Save everything you do and use it as a benchmark as you progress as an artist.” You can see more of Selbe’s work at the Franklin Square Gallery, Southport, and you can reach him by email at Leselbe2007@hotmail.com.

HISTORY
Fool Me Once
April ushers in a day of silliness for young and old
STORY BY KASS FINCHER
H
ow did April Fools Day begin? No one knows for sure, but many think it occurred as a result of the Pope’s decision in 16th century France to move the date of New Year’s Day from April 1 to January 1. People who continued to celebrate on April 1 were called “April fools” and friends played pranks on them.
It’s a fun day, kind of like Halloween, when children especially get into the spirt. Many countries around the world have heir own traditions. In France, children ape a paper fish to their friend’s back. When the friend discovers the fish, the
prankster yells “Poisson d’Avril!” In Scotland, April Fools lasts for two days, with the second day - “Taily Day” - being all about pranks on your victim’s rear. It’s believed this tradition was the start of the infamous “kick me” prank. On CNN.com, the website describes a number of memorable April Fools Day pranks performed in media and business over the last few decades: Early 1950s -The BBC runs a “news” item about the spaghetti harvest in Switzerland. 1985 -Sports Illustrated runs a 14-page story by George Plimpton about a Mets pitching phenom named Sidd Finch. The reclusive, skinny Finch has a 168-mph fastball (which he credits to meditations in Tibet) and a host of quirks including carrying a French horn at all times and wearing only one hiking boot while pitching. 1986-present -Press releases for the [non-existent] New York City April Fools Parade have been issued every year since 1986. 1996 -Taco Bell Corp. runs a full-page ad in several major newspapers claiming it has purchased the Liberty Bell and is renaming it the “Taco Liberty Bell.” 2004 -The National Public Radio show “All Things Considered” runs a story about the post offices’ new “portable zip codes” program. Based on people being able to keep their phone number even if they moved, the program was designed to represent “a citizen’s place in the demographic, rather than geographic, landscape.” 2008 -The BBC runs a video clip of flying penguins as part of a story for its series “Miracles of Evolution.” The presenter explains that the penguins escaped the cold, harsh Antarctic weather by flying to the
44 Southport Magazine / APRIL 2019 / www.SouthportMag.com
tropical rainforests of South America. 2010 -The National Republican Senatorial Committee releases a parody web video celebrating President Barack Obama as “truly the greatest president ever” and that he has “kept all his promises.” 2013 -The Guardian announces the launch of its own augmented reality device, “Guardian Goggles,”which will “beam its journalism directly into the wearer’s visual field, enabling users to see the world through the Guardian’s eyes at all times.” 2016 -Google introduces “Mic Drop,” a Gmail feature that enables users to send emails with an animated gif depicting a minion dropping a microphone. The prank goes awry when people accidentally click on the button and unwittingly send business emails with the whimsical animation. The feature is removed after several hours of confusion. I’m sure there are many more examples of foolishness, but one of the favorites comes from the Swedes. In the 1960s there was only one television station and it broadcast in black and white. On April Fools Day, the station announced that viewers could convert their TV sets to display color by simply pulling a nylon stocking over the screen. What jokes will you pull on this day? Take the opportunity to turn away from all the worrisome news in the world, and commit your best prank on your best friend for a foolish April day.
