LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Surviving the Fourth! Another scorcher in store for the Fourth or rain? Southport, Oak Island and the surrounding communities embrace this ever-growing event that promises plenty of visitors to our lovely cities, mad traffic and huge lines. The locals grin and bare it because they know it supports the local businesses and brings extra revenue to the city. There is never a dull moment with all the activities lined up - free, kid friendly and
convenient. I’ve never lived in an area that can organize so many activities back to back in such a small vicinity. A HUGE shout out to the organizers, the volunteers, the extra police on hand and the cities for handling all the extra bodies and cars in town. We all hope that this year goes off without a hitch and a HUGE bang around 9pm, that lights up the skies for all to enjoy. This Festival Guide is your KEY to all the special events - pages 4 - 17.
ON THE COVER Taylor Joliff, our resident cover model, always pulls it off - no matter what we do to him. You may find him almost unrecognizable this time, on the cover, hiding in the bush, with Patriotic Camo paint. He’s ready to survive the Fourth... Are you? This issue will give you everything you need to know.. so you can! ENJOY! And THANKS Taylor for being such a good sport.

Patriotic Message Southport
Mayor Jerry Dove
Welcome to the Home of the North Carolina 4th of July Festival! Among all of the holidays celebrated in Southport, the 4th of July stands out. The first Southport Independence Day celebration took place in 1795. The tradition continued and in1972, Southport was designated the home of the official NC 4th of July Festival. For all of our citizens and visitors in Southport, NC, the 4th of July celebrates our Nation’s freedom and liberty. Our charming small town, located on the Cape Fear River, has something to offer for everyone. While strolling our scenic waterfront, I invite and encourage you to experience our numerous restaurants, unique shops/boutiques, art galleries, and museums. You will also find first class accommodations that range from nationally known hotels to quaint inns and welcoming bed and breakfasts. We have several tour guides that will share the history of Southport while guiding you through our historic city and neighborhoods rich with southern charm. While we join together as Americans to honor our freedom, we encourage everyone to take part in the many activities offered to commemorate the 4th: • Veterans’ Recognition • Naturalization Ceremony • Firemen’s Competition • 9/11 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit • 4th of July Parade • Fireworks On behalf of the citizens of Southport, I extend a warm welcome to all of our visitors and we are so happy that you have chosen to join us in celebration of our Nation’s freedom! Happy Independence Day to all! Mayor J.V. Dove City of Southport

Oak Island
Mayor Cindy Brochure What an exciting time it is in the Town of Oak Island! We love our summer celebrations, especially Beach Day on July 1st. It’s a day full of fun games and contests, dancing and music. July 1st is also the Town of Oak Island’s official birthday, and it’s wonderful we get to celebrate that with so many friends. It’s also part of the official North Carolina 4th of July Festival, and are grateful to be a part of that. Summer is busy for a beach town, and this year is no exception. esides all of the normal summer activities, we also have some important projects going on. We’re rebuilding the Oak Island Pier and we’re getting more sand for the beach in the eastern side of town, thanks to a dredging project by the federal government. We ask for your patience and understanding as we do this necessary work, and with nine miles of beach, there is still plenty of room to enjoy it. We always strive to keep our amenities looking great so we can continue to provide a little piece of paradise for our residents and visitors. We hope you’ll have a great time while you’re in town – spend time on the beach, check out shops and boutiques, enjoy all kinds of water sports and activities, and top off your day with some ice cream or one of the other sweets you’ll find in town. We have the Famers and Artisans Market on Mondays during the season and we have summer concerts too, usually on Friday nights, so there really is something for everyone. Mayor Cindy Brochure Town of Oak Island
CURRENTS Building futures. Serving our veterans. Performing to exceptional standards. Earning the trust of others. Working as a team. The traits that distinguish our veterans’ service to our nation are a key part of our culture and commitment at BB&T. As you look to the future, we look forward to supporting you with a range of Veterans Administration mortgages – and personal service that goes above and beyond. BBT.com/Mortgage

Every year, 35 to 40 children across the country die from heat exposure in vehicles. Sadly, these deaths can be prevented. The temperature inside a vehicle can rise to almost 200 degrees in just 10 minutes. In fact, it gets so hot that s’mores can be cooked in the backseat. A child’s body heats up 3 to 5 times faster than adults. Even a few minutes of heat exposure can be dangerous for a child. July is historically the deadliest month for child fatalities in hot cars. NEVER leave a child unattended in a car, for any length of time or at any time of the year.

PET POLICY For the safety and comfort of our visitors and pets, leave your pets at home. The N.C. 4th of July Festival Pet Policy discourages pets on the Festival grounds, excluding service dogs and law enforcement dogs. Most importantly, the heat is a real concern for the health of pets. Pavement, metal and tarcoated asphalt get extremely hot and can burn their feet. Make prior arrangements to ensure proper care is given to your pets while attending the Festival. Do not leave pets unattended in parked cars, regardless as to whether a window may be left open. www.SouthportMag.com / JULY#1 2018 / Southport Magazine 9

Southport - Fourth of July Festival Parade Route
There are a limited number of roadways into and out of the City of Southport, so bring your patience. Be prepared to spend some time in traffic when entering and exiting the City, especially before and after the parade and fireworks. Pay strict attention to safety officers. Officers will be stationed at key locations to guide you quickly and safely to your destination. There will also electronic information signs located on main thoroughfares during the festival to provide information to motorists. For a more enjoyable festival experience: • Do not block driveways when parking your vehicles. • Do not leave valuables in unlocked vehicles. • Visitors traveling by bicycle are encourage to secure them when not in use. • Refrain from bringing pets to the festival. Temperatures and humidity are very high and could be hazardous to your pets health. If you decide to bring your pet to the festival; all pets must be kept on a short lead for the safety of others and your pet. DO NOT leave your dog in a vehicle. 4th OF JULY FESTIVAL EVENTS
Beach Day
Date: Saturday, June 30, 2018 Time: - 8:00 a.m.- 9:00 p.m. Location: Middleton Park Extension, 46th Street SE, Oak Island The N.C. 4th of July Festival Beach Day is a full day of activities on Oak Island designed for the whole family. If sand sculpture building, volleyball, skate board, bocce ball contests sound like fun then you will really enjoy Beach Day. But the fun doesn’t stop with the contests, there is also evening entertainment and shag contest. Held annually on July 1st (unless it falls on a Sunday -then it is observed on the Saturday), the celebration combines the merger of the Towns of Yaupon Beach & Long Beach into the Town of Oak Island with the celebration of our Independence Day festivities. Beach Day activities are organized and sponsored by the Oak Island Parks & Recreation Department. The Shag Contest is organized by the Society of Brunswick Shaggers. What is shag dancing? The “Carolina Shag” originated along the area between Myrtle Beach, SC and Wilmington, NC in the 1940s and is still popular today. A couple’s dance, the Carolina Shag, a descendant of the Carolina Jitterbug, is performed while enjoying bech music. Registration for the Shag Contest is from 6:00p.m.-6:45p.m. at Middleton Park Extension Soccer Field. The Shag Contest will be held during the band’s break around 7:00p.m. in Middleton Park Extension. Free to enter but registration form required.

Firefighter’s Competition Date: Saturday, June 30th Time: 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Location: Southport Fire Department’s Downtown Satellite Station 115 E. Nash Street Since 1984, The City of Southport Fire Department has invited area fire departments to Southport to compete in the N.C. 4th of July Festival Fire Fighter Freedom Competition. What looks like fun games to the spectators is really an event to test the teamwork of a department, as it pays homage to training and fire fighting methods of our past. Take for example the bucket brigade. It was the method of extinguishing fires until the invention of the hand pumped fire engine. There is a tremendous amount of teamwork and physical endurance that is needed to complete this duty. Teamwork and endurance is the key to an effective Fire Department. The competitive events included Midnight Alarm/Sprinkler Plug, Tanker Tug, Command Post, Bucket Brigade, and Barrel Push There are plenty of Fire engines, ladder trucks and equipment on display and the firefighters are happy to answer any questions.
Children’s Entertainment
Date: Monday, July 2nd Time: 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. Location: Keziah Park, Corner of West Moore & Lord StreetsThe N.C. 4th of July Festival has something for every age. Not to be confused with the Southport Parks & Recreation Department’s Children’s Games on July 3rd, Children’s Entertainment is located in Keziah Park, a very shaded park one block from the Waterfront on West Moore Street (next to the Margaret & James Harper, Jr, Public Library). Children’s Entertainment will give younger children a creative and fun outlet through FREE face painting, craft projects, coloring, beading, and more. The Children’s Entertainment is organized by the Southport Rotary Club.
American Revolutionary Living History Exhibit
July 2nd, 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.- Tryon County Militia of North Carolina, 203 E. Bay Street
Entertainment
Date: July 2 - 4 Location: Waterfront Stage The festival is steep in traditions and ceremonies but the 4th of July is also a celebration. The party is rocking at the Waterfront Stage with a variety of music and entertainment. The stage is located, beside Waterfront Park at the end of South Howe Street but the entertainment is only half the attraction with a backdrop of the Intracoastal Waterway and Cape Fear River, you just never know what will float by as you enjoy the sounds from the stage. There is plenty of room at Waterfront Park to spread out a blanket or take advantage of the street closing and setup a chair on the pavement, just make sure to save room in front of the stage for the dance “floor”. All that dancing and foot tapping you will surely whip up an appetite. Food vendors are located adjacent to the stage serving everything from blooming onions to funnel cakes and everything in between.
Food Concessions
Date: July 2nd - 4th Dates & Times: Franklin Square Park - on the Nash Street Side of the Park 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m July 2nd 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. July 3rd 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. July 4th
Waterfront Park Area -Beginning at 104 South Howe Street 11:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. July 2nd 11:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. July 3rd 10:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. July 4th
A variety of food and drink are available during the festival to fill you up as you partake in the numerous festival events. Your sense of smell will perk up when you near the concession areas. You will be tempted by the aroma of hot dogs, Greek gyros, Italian sausage, shrimp baskets, bar-b-que, blooming onions, and fries to funnel cakes, kettle corn, ice cream, cotton candy, and shaved ice. There are two areas where the N.C. 4th of July Festival food concessions are located. The largest is that near the Waterfront Stage on South Howe Street. There is also a nice selection of food vendors mixed in with the Arts and Crafts in Franklin Square Park. These vendors are only open during the hours of the Arts & Craft Show and are mostly located on the Nash Street side of Franklin Square Park. If you looking for a way to beat the heat for an hour? We suggest one of the many area restaurants.

Bay Street The N.C. 4th of July Festival is sometimes compared to a Norman Rockwell picture type event. Events like the Children’s Games with old time games like sack races or watermelon rolling that never go out of style could be the reason. The City of Southport’s Parks & Recreation Department does a fantastic job getting children active and providing a fun event for children. Make sure not to miss this event, it is guaranteed to make you

A Salute to Veterans
Date: July 2nd Time: 6:00 p.m. Location: Southport Community Building Entertainment: Letters From Home America’s Bombshell Duo As we celebrate Independence Day, let us not forget our nation’s independence is not a given nor does it come without a cost. We ask that our brave men and women in our armed services protect and defend our nation’s freedom every day. Some pay the ultimate cost and have given their lives. All have given at some cost. We honor and celebrate the contributions of those that have served our Nation through a Veteran’s Recognition Ceremony. The Ceremony will include displays, entertainment, food and a keynote speaker. Each year the Festival Committee will choose a specific military branch, conflict or war to highlight, but make no mistake, all Veteran’s and Active Military are welcome and honored. Held at the Southport Community Building annually during the festival, this event gives Veterans a chance to visit, laugh, and remember with other Veterans. We invite anyone who is a Veteran or Active Military, relative of a Veteran or Active Military or those individuals who just want to show their appreciation to attend. Sponsored by Duke Energy and River Road Animal Hospital.

Parade
Date: July 4th Time: 11:00 a.m. Location: Parade begins at the Corner of Atlantic & Moore Streets. Travels Moore to Howe Street. Turns right onto Howe Street. Follows Howe Street North to Fodale Avenue. Turns right onto Fodale Avenue and ends just past Ocean Trail Heathcare & Rehabilitation Center Who doesn’t love a parade? The current N.C. 4th of July Festival Parade began in 1964 but has roots dating back to 1700’s, when the ladies of Smithville (now the City of Southport) dressed in white and marched through the town in observance of Independence Day. Today’s parade is much longer and has a bigger variety, with over 120 units filling the streets as children’s eyes widen in delight when patriotic units pass by. An extra special treat is that the newly crowned Miss North Carolina makes one of her first appearances in the festival parade.

Shine and Show Classic Cars
Date: July 4th Time: 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Location: Waterfront Park Area, 203 E. Bay Street Americans have had a love affair with their vehicles since the first affordable American car, Ford Model T, rolled off the assembly line in 1927. Transport yourself to your youth or for the younger generation get a glimpse into our country’s automotive history when the muscle car ruled the street and an occasional drag race. Take a stroll down memory lane at the N.C. 4th of July Festival car show presented by the Cape Fear Cruisers. It’s called “Shine & Show” and; it’s just that. We do not judge or hand out trophies; but we do have a great time. The Shine and Show is located on the Cape Fear River in front of historic Fort Johnston in downtown Southport, N. C. It’s a beautiful view with wonderful oak trees for shade and a nice breeze from the water. Our cars are viewed by thousands of people. So SHINE up your baby and SHOW it with us on July 4th.
Date: July 4th Time: 9:00 p.m. Location: Southport Waterfront Sponsored by: American Marine Construction In 1792, men of the Town of Smithville (Southport’s founding name) commemorated our nation’s independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain with a toast, as ships anchored in her harbor fired their cannons in celebration. Today crowds of people line the Waterfront in Southport and many “ships” anchor in the harbor to watch a brilliant fireworks display, launched from a barge in the Intracoastal Waterway. Plenty of oh’s and uh’s are packed into the 20 minute fireworks show which is the finale for the festival.
