LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Surviving the Fourth! Another scorcher in store for the Fourth or rain? Southport, Oak Island and the surrounding communities embrace this ever-growing event that promises plenty of visitors to our lovely cities, mad traffic and huge lines. The locals grin and bare it because they know it supports the local businesses and brings extra revenue to the city. There is never a dull moment with all the activities lined up - free, kid friendly and

convenient. I’ve never lived in an area that can organize so many activities back to back in such a small vicinity. A HUGE shout out to the organizers, the volunteers, the extra police on hand and the cities for handling all the extra bodies and cars in town. We all hope that this year goes off without a hitch and a HUGE bang around 9pm, that lights up the skies for all to enjoy. This Festival Guide is your KEY to all the special events - pages 5 - 17.

ON THE COVER Michelle and Robert Caroll sent in this adorable photo of their children on their front porch, waving the patriotic American flags. We can’t think of a better cover that captures the spirit of the fourth and the history of Southport better than this one. Thanks Michelle and Robert! The cuties on the porch are: Reighan Elisabeth age 3, and twins Freddie & Julia 14 months.

There’s no place like home. And no one like you. Let our experienced lenders provide you with tailored guidance to help make the process simpler, easier and as a result – less stressful.

Southport and Oak Island promise another amazing Fourth of July Festival Families looking for a unique July 4th destination need look no further than our lovely town of Southport, NC. The town’s annual Independence Day celebration is the official State of North Carolina’s celebration. Highlights include picnics, arts, and crafts in the park, a car show, parade, fireworks, firemen’s competition, children’s games, live entertainment nightly, great food and of course, lots of red, white and blue. The history of Southport’s Fourth of July Festival celebration was first recorded in a newspaper in 1795. Now the event has grown to attract over 50,000 visitors thorugh each year. Through the years it is the efforts of civic groups and citizens that the Festival has evolved to encompass a wide variety of American celebration traditions. Moreover, what could be more American than a Naturalization Ceremony which was incorporated into the N.C. Fourth of July Festival in 1996 and administered by what is now the United States Department of Homeland Security U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Holding to its mission of promoting patriotism, the Festival also contains a Veterans Recognition Ceremony, Flag Retirement Ceremony, and Flag Raising Ceremony. The Festival kicks off Sunday, June 23rd with an Opening Ceremony on the Fort Johnston Garrison Lawn with entertainment by the 208th Army Band Combo Nation 9.0 (Jazz Band). Highlights of

the Festival include traditional July 4th celebrations. The 36th Annual Fire Fighters Freedom Competition and Apparatus Expo will be held on Nash Street, June 29th. One full day of activities will be held on Oak Island for the Festival’s Annual Beach Day, Saturday, July 1st with the addition this year of a fireworks display. Arts and Crafts in Franklin Square Park will be on display July 2nd-July 4th. New to the Festival this year is a Freedom Flotilla. Waterfront entertainment will be July 2nd – July 4th and many other festival events will be sure crowd pleasers. The Fourth of July Festival parade will begin at 11 a.m. on July 4th. The Festival will conclude with a lively display of fireworks Thursday, July 4th at the waterfront Southport. The Festival’s website contains parade and flotilla entry forms, and the public is encouraged to participate. View the entire Festival schedule and daily waterfront entertainment schedule on pages 7 - 17 or at www.nc4thofjuly.com.

Follows Howe Street North to Fodale Avenue. Turns right onto Fodale Avenue and ends just past Ocean Trail Heathcare & Rehabilitation Center Who doesn’t love a parade? The current N.C. 4th of July Festival Parade began in 1964 but has roots dating back to 1700’s, when the ladies of Smithville (now the City of Southport) dressed in white and marched through the town in observance of Independence Day. Today’s parade is much longer and has a bigger variety, with over 120 units filling the streets as children’s eyes widen in delight when patriotic units pass by. An extra special treat will be the newly crowned Miss North Carolina making one of her first appearances in the festival parade. The parade is sponsored by Dosher Memorial Hospital, First National Bank Jammin 99.9 WKXB-FM & WECT TV6. Parade route begins at the corner of E. Moore Street and Atlantic Avenue, traveling E

A Salute to Veterans

Date: July 2nd Time: 6:00 p.m. Location: Southport Community Building Program: Letters from Home Vietnam Show: We Gotta Get Out of This Place As we celebrate Independence Day, let us not forget our nation’s independence is not a given nor does it come without a cost. We ask that our brave men and women in our armed services protect and defend our nation’s freedom every day. Some pay the ultimate cost and have given their lives. All have given at some cost. We honor and celebrate the contributions of those that have served our Nation through a Veteran’s Recognition Ceremony. The Ceremony will include displays, entertainment, food and a keynote speaker. Each year the Festival Committee will choose a specific military branch, conflict or war to highlight, but make no mistake, all Veteran’s and Active Military are welcome and honored.

What looks like fun games to the spectators is really an event to test the teamwork of a department, as it pays homage to training and fire fighting methods of our past. Take for example the bucket brigade. It was the method of extinguishing fires until the invention of the hand pumped fire engine. There is a tremendous amount of teamwork and physical endurance that is needed to complete this duty. Teamwork and endurance is the key to an effective Fire Department. The competitive events include Midnight Alarm/Sprinkler Plug, Tanker Tug, Command Post, Bucket Brigade, and Barrel Push There are plenty of fire engines, ladder trucks and equipment on display and the firefighters are happy to answer any questions.

2019 N.C. 4th of July Festival Parade Marshal - Heather J. Carlisle COL, LG, CDR, 596th Trans BDE (SDDC).

Moore to N. Howe Street and following N. Howe to Fodale Avenue. The festival parade steps off at 11am on July 4th

Held at the Southport Community Building annually during the festival, this event gives Veterans a chance to visit, laugh, and remember with other Veterans. We invite anyone who is a Veteran or Active Military, relative of a Veteran or Active Military or those individuals who just want to show their appreciation to attend. Sponsored by Carillon Assisted Living of Southport, and River Road Animal Hospital.

But the fun doesn’t stop with the contests, there is also evening entertainment and a shag contest. Held annually on July 1st (unless it falls on a Sunday -then it is observed on the Saturday), the celebration combines the merger of the Towns of Yaupon Beach & Long Beach into the Town of Oak Island with the celebration of our Independence Day festivities. Beach Day activities are organized and sponsored by the Oak Island Parks & Recreation Department. The Shag Contest is organized by the Society of Brunswick Shaggers. What is shag dancing? The “Carolina Shag” originated along the area between Myrtle Beach, SC and Wilmington, NC in the 1940s and is still popular today. A couple’s dance, the Carolina Shag, a descendant of the Carolina Jitterbug, is performed while enjoying bech music. Musical Entertainment

Date: July 2 - 4 Location: Waterfront Stage The festival is steeped in traditions and ceremonies but the 4th of July is also a celebration. The party is rocking at the Waterfront Stage with a variety of music and entertainment. The stage is located, beside Waterfront Park at the end of South Howe Street but the entertainment is only half the attraction with a backdrop of the Intracoastal Waterway and Cape Fear River, you just never know what will float by as you enjoy the sounds from the stage. There is plenty of room at Waterfront Park to spread out a blanket or take advantage of the street closing and setup a chair on the pavement, just make sure to save room in front of the stage for the dance “floor”. All of that dancing and foot tapping will surely whip up an appetite. Food vendors are located adjacent to the stage serving everything from blooming onions to funnel cakes and everything in between.

Flag Raising Ceremony Date: July 4th Time: 10:30 a.m. Location: Intersection of Moore & Howe Streets The N.C. 4th of July Festival Flag Raising Ceremony is organized by our friends at Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site. This partnership has enabled us to merge history and tradition, creating a unique Flag Raising Ceremony where drum and fife meet the Knights of Columbus.

Flag Retirement Ceremony “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. And to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all”. Date: July 3rd Time: 6:00 p.m. Location: 111 West Moore Street (next to the library) The U.S. Flag Code states “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning”. Held annually during the festival, the N.C. 4th of July Festival Retirement Ceremony is a somber and respectful event. The Ceremony is organized by the Richard H. Stewart Jr. American Legion Post and the Cape Fear Council of Boy Scouts. If you have a worn flag, you may leave the flag anytime during the year at the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce Welcome Center, 4433 Long Beach Road, Southport or the V.F.W. Post 104900, 103 SE 50th Street, Oak Island for proper disposal. The procession begins at the N.C Maritime Museum @ Southport, 204 E. Moore Street and is lead by a colonial band and citizens dressed in period costumes, followed by area public officials to the intersection of Howe/Moore Streets. The Knights of Columbus hoist the colors, a flag that has been flown over our Nation’s Capitol. When in the area, we encourage you to visit Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site, 8884 St. Philip’s Road, Winnabow, just minutes from Southport. Or plan another trip around one of their special events. Well worth the trip. Sponsored by Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce.

CHILD SAFETY

Child Safety– These are facts from Safe Kids of NC. Every year, 35 to 40 children across the country die from heat exposure in vehicles. Sadly, these deaths can be prevented. The temperature inside a vehicle can rise to almost 200 degrees in just 10 minutes. In fact, it gets so hot that s’mores can be cooked in the backseat. A child’s body heats up 3 to 5 times faster than adults. Even a few minutes of heat exposure can be dangerous for a child. July is historically the deadliest month for child fatalities in hot cars. NEVER leave a child unattended in a car, for any length of time or at any time of the year.

FESTIVAL EVENTS

NO PETS PET POLICY: For the safety and comfort of our visitors and pets, leave your pets at home. The N.C. 4th of July Festival Pet Policy discourages pets on the Festival grounds, excluding service dogs and law enforcement dogs . This policy is in place out of respect and safety for the animals. Pets become a liability and logistical challenge when they are brought to the Festival. The Festival hosts more than 50,000 visitors. The size of these crowds and noise associated with festival events can prove a threat to the safety of your pets. Most importantly the heat is a real concern for the health of pets. Pavement, metal and tar-coated asphalt get extremely hot and can burn their feet. Make prior arrangements to ensure proper care is given to your pets while attending the Festival. Do not leave pets unattended in parked cars, regardless as to whether a window may be open.

PEDESTRIAN ONLY POLICY For the safety of festival attendees, The Festival area is a pedestrian only area. The Waterfront Festival area is defined as South Howe Street to Bay Street and on Bay Street from South Atlantic Avenue to Lord Street. The Franklin Square Park Festival area is defined as in the Franklin Square Park. No unauthorized vehicles, bicycles, ATVS, golf carts, skateboards, rollerblades…

COMMUNITY Tribute to Veterans

Fourth of July Parade Honors Veterans STORY COURTESY JULY 4TH FESTIVAL COMMITTEE

T

he North Carolina 4 th of July Festival Committee will honor Vietnam Veterans during the 2019 festival by naming them as Honorary Marshals of the Festival Parade. It is the tradition of the festival to acknowledge different war era soldiers in alternate years. This year the committee has chosen to honor our Vietnam Veterans for their contributions overseas and at home.

“The 4 th of July Committee is pleased to honor all veterans,” said Karen Sphar, executive vice president of the Southport Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce. “Acknowledging our Armed Services for the freedoms we enjoy today is an important aspect of each year’s 4 th of July celebration. From the days of the Continental Army to today’s

five branches of military service opportunities, many have given all. No matter the call or opinion of cause, the troops stand ready to defend and we are proud to honor their efforts.” The military festival float coordination has been done with the help of the Brunswick County Veterans Coalition. Brunswick County has more than 130,000 people within its boundaries.

Approximately 10 percent are veterans who have served in the armed forces, a majority of these are over the age of 65. Many of these veterans are members of veteran organizations such as the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American

Veterans, the Marine Corps League and others. These veterans, although not in uniform any longer, strive to assist fellow veterans in need and the citizens of Brunswick County through various programs.

Q: I’m a “solopreneur”; do you have suggestions on how to grow my business? —Arthur G. from Southport

A: Tasked with single-handedly managing all aspects

of their businesses - sales, marketing, production, office management, accounting, etc. - solopreneurs can quickly become overworked and overwhelmed. They may also find it difficult to grow their businesses as they deal with competing priorities and not enough hours in the day. Here are 4 ways you can empower yourself to have the time and focus to grow your business:

• Get organized. Use technology tools to help you keep track of to-dos, deadlines, and important information (e.g. Evernote) • Boost productivity. Figure out the times of the day when you’re at your peak performance and schedule your work for clients during those timeframes. This will help ensure you’re putting your best foot forward on the tasks that matter most. • Boost efficiency. Use platforms and features that allow you to automate certain aspects of your business. (e.g. Buffer - to streamline social media efforts by composing and scheduling posts in advance) • Don’t sell yourself short. If you bill hourly for your services, use a time-tracking app that you can turn on and off easily whenever dedicating time to a client (e.g. Hours).
