EDITOR’S NOTE OBX or Bust M ost of my childhood summer vacations began with a long drive! We lived in Ohio and New Jersey and my folks would pack up my brother, sister and I and we would make the long haul to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.
Most years we would meet up with my father’s side of the family to spend time with our cousins whom we didn’t see very often. As a result, my definition of a vacation grew to always include my whole family. Many years later, now that I am adult with my own kids, the OBX is still the destination of choice for our family. It gives me great joy to see our children and their cousins connecting the same we did so many years ago! It is my favorite place on this earth because of its beauty and tthe way it touches me emotionally; The weathered wood decks, sand dunes and my love for the most important people in my life. When we can’t getaway to the OBX, we gather at our Mother’s cozy house in Pittsboro, North Carolina. Her backyard is the perfect place for bird watching and reminiscing about the past and just laughing. Many

Summer Time! On and off the grid BY LISA P. STITES
I
t’s that time of year. School is out and our wanderlust kicks in as we wonder where we’ll go for vacation this year. I’ve been lots of places – every state along the East Coast, New Orleans, Tennessee, mountains, beaches and the flat lands in between them. These are a few of the places my family and I love. FLORIDA KEYS - KEY WEST, FL
There is the beach, and then there are the beaches in the Florida Keys. It’s going to the Caribbean without needing a passport. If you want to go for a week or more, you could drive from here, though it will be a long trip. If you want to go for a long weekend, plan on flying. There is so much to do in the Keys. There’s great snorkeling and diving, fishing, boating and water sports, sunset cruises, and Sunset Celebration and other nightlife in Key West. You’ll find fresh seafood dish-
es at restaurants, or you can catch your own right off a dock or on a charter boat. We have stayed in Key West with just the two of us, and we have stayed farther up the coast in Marathon with the family. I wouldn’t recommend staying in Key West with the kids. Not that they wouldn’t enjoy it, but the Keys farther north are more family-friendly and a little more affordable, though everything is expensive in the Keys. Rooms in Marathon run from $100 to $450 a night and up, while in Key West they tend to run $150 to $600 and more a
night. Definitely check out John Pennekamp State Park for snorkeling and make sure you buy a disposable underwater camera or a GoPro. There are submerged cannons and it is shallow enough to stand on them, and the fish love sharing the spot with tourists. Robbie’s in Islamorada is another fun spot. You can rent a boat or charter a trip, feed huge tarpon from the dock or grab a bite to eat. Keep your eyes open and explore -- there are lots of public parks and places to access the water.
DISNEY WORLD - ORLANDO, FL
My family loves Disney. At this point, with a teenager in the house, really it’s my husband and I that love Disney and our son goes along for the ride. There are so many ways to do Disney, and some of them are surprisingly affordable. Disney has three levels of resorts – deluxe, moderate and value. The value resorts run between $90 and $120 a night depending on the time of year while deluxe resort rooms vary from $400/night to more than $1,000/night. There are several hotels very close to Disney, however, so it is possible to spend much less on accommodations. We like to stay in the resort, park the car and use Dis-
ney transportation. For me, the ultimate Disney vacation would include a stay at the new bungalows on the lake at the Polynesian Resort, but that’s not likely to happen. We did splurge for a room in the Animal Kingdom Lodge, but just for one night. We were in a room all the way down at the end, farthest wing from the lobby, what we called the cheap seats. It also happened to be across from the spot where many animals demanded breakfast. Waking up to the sound of an African crane and seeing giraffes, ostriches and other animals in the courtyard right outside our room was well worth the price. There are four amusement parks: Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom. My best advice for a Disney vacation is to get over the idea that you are going to see and do everything. Just go and enjoy the experiences. Keep in mind that you can make reservations for breakfast before the park actually opens, giving you time to get pictures of Cinderella’s castle and Main Street fairly people-free. Ticket prices start at $105 for the Magic Kingdom for one day, $97/day for the other parks. Multiple day tickets lower the price per day; tickets that allow multiple park visits per day are also available. You can also do a quick weekend trip. It’s only a 9-hour or so drive after all. Drive to Georgia or Florida after work on a Thursday night and stay somewhere on the way. Friday morning, go to Downtown Disney and browse through all the shops
Waking up to the sound of an African crane and seeing giraffes, ostriches and other animals in the courtyard right outside our room was well worth the price. – Christmas, artwork, Legos, Disney toys, hats, etc. You can check in that afternoon, and spend some time riding the monorail and exploring some of the resorts. Pick a park to visit Saturday, and then visit Downtown Disney for some souvenir shopping and lunch before heading home Sunday.

I really don’t like the word staycation, but if you’re looking for something really affordable this year, staying home might be just the thing. Laze on the beach with a good book or a fishing pole, take a sunset cruise, rent a kayak or take lessons, learn how to paddleboard, or make an appointment to climb the lighthouse. The view is incredible from the top. There are plenty of tourist attractions that many locals have likely never visited, such as the Maritime Museum in Southport, Ingram Planetarium in Sunset Beach, the USS North Carolina Battleship on our side of the Cape Fear River and Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson.
6 Southport Magazine / June 2015 / www.SouthportMag.com
Fort Fisher and the Aquarium are a short, $5 ferry ride away. Take a day trip to Myrtle Beach (Ripley’s Aquarium at Broadway at the Beach and Alligator Adventures near Barefoot Landing offer Brunswick County residents the locals’ admission rates). But if you decide to stay here and enjoy all of the reasons we love to call it home, you might want to still give everyone the impression that you are traveling far away for vacation and can’t possibly be reached – just a suggestion!
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA
Tucked comfortably into the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains is a vacation spot for history lovers and wine enthu-
siasts. Charlottesville, Va. is home to the University of Virginia, vineyards and orchards, brew pubs, beautiful hiking spots, and Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s home. Charlottesville is a great spot for couples to reconnect, but it is also a destination the whole family would enjoy. Monticello is a beautiful home and touring it is a must. Don’t miss the University of Virginia campus, which Jefferson designed. The area offers all kinds of outdoor activities, such as hiking, kayaking, rafting, horseback riding, and skiing and snowboarding in the winter months. There are many B&Bs to choose from if you’re looking for a private getaway just for two. My husband and I stayed at the Clifton Inn, a beautiful B&B that was the home of Thomas Mann Randolph, a Governor of Virginia and Jefferson’s sonin-law. The home was actually a wedding gift from Jefferson to his daughter and her husband. We were a young couple just starting out when we stayed there. We used a gift certificate and still booked the least expensive room, which was in one of the outbuildings. Due to construction outside, we were moved into one of the master suites in the main house, luckily at no extra expense. We thought we would like to have dinner at the Inn’s restaurant but were told it was booked for a private function. As we headed into town for dinner, dressed in our nicest khaki pants, we saw that the function was a black-tie affair. The next day we found out it was a victory party for the newly elected Governor. No wonder they sent us off to town. We went to a brew house for dinner and really enjoyed it. That weekend, we also toured Jefferson’s Vineyards and did a wine tasting. We found beautiful places to walk on and off the Inn’s property. It seems no matter what we do, adventure comes our way, especially when we travel. When we headed out to Charlottesville, we planned to take the main highways to get there. We were having such a good conversation, we missed our exit and ended up outside Raleigh. It was pre-cell phone and GPS times, so we pulled into a gas station and consulted the map. We picked a new route and headed out again. It was a beautiful ride. The fall leaves were in full color and we traveled through picturesque towns. That’s the best part of traveling to new places. Wherever you decide to go this summer, be open to new experiences and don’t forget that the journey can be half the fun. Poet Robert Frost had it right – taking the road less traveled can make all the difference.✪

Journey Through Big Country

J
anuary can be hard at the beach; business is slow, the weather can be bad, the holidays are over and New Year’s resolutions seem to have lost their motivation. This is the time of year I keep my spirits up by playing travel agent.
I google and search, daydreaming about things I want to see and places I want to go. I compare prices and feasibilities. I research trip advisor, noting other traveler’s two cents on different times of year, what to pack, what to see and what to avoid. From this method I have traveled hundreds of places in my sweats and slippers from the comfort of home. This is how my trip out west began. Big country. Openness seemed appealing during the dark confines of that winter. I have fond childhood memories of weekend trips thru portions of the Appalachian Mountains, Pisgah National Forest, the Great Smoky Mountains, Pigeon Forge, the Blue Ridge Parkway; Gatlinburg, Johnston City, Cherokee, Brevard. If I try hard enough, I can evoke the smell of coppery stream water, sweet and spicy rhododendrons mixed
with faint traces of skunk and once wet leaves commingled and mellowed in scent by the baking sun. I wanted a piece of mountain magic and I wanted my daughter to have a slice of her own mountain memories. I was thinking big that winter: Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming, why not? We had one week. August 6-13th. Tuesday to Tuesday, reading somewhere (or is it just urban legend?) that flights are cheaper on Tuesdays. Either way, I’ll go with it. My daughter, fourteen at the time, and I flew from Wilmington, NC to Denver CO. We rented a little silver economy car. We had lunch downtown Denver, right down the street from the Patagonia store, already feeling like a pair of outdoorsman dipped in this environmentally-appreciative culture. We got it in the car and drove. We drove
and drove. We were going to stop In Laramie, just inside of Wyoming, but it was so early; we could get some more time on the road and so we drove on—the landscape was incredulous, dips and valleys, flat but at the same time surrounded by mountainscapes in the distance. Rawlins would have been a good stop over but both hotels were booked, catering to a big highway job, no problem. We had a full tank, I was feeling good, we would just head on to the next town. The terrain was breathtaking, reminding me of every Sunday afternoon John Wayne movie. Was that sagebrush? It was enchanting, for the first hour. My GPS, that I had carefully brought from home, I now realize how naive I was. My GPS, my safety feature, along with the can of bear spray picked up near the Patagonia store, didn’t get a signal. Was there another town? I thought about the half bottle of water and the bag of pretzels from the flight, and tried not to think of NBC dateline episodes. Not another car, sign, anything, just a vast black hole of openness. I had no idea how big Big Country was! Not like New England, where the town lines thread against each other, crisscrossing back and forth; or like my home state, North Carolina, where there might be respectable 30 or so miles in between. Nope, a lot of active mileage out here. Just when I was thinking how we could ration the water and share the pretzels, we drove over a crest into Lander and found the welcoming piney cabin facade of the Lander Wyoming Best Western. Our first morning, we found in order: coffee, a map, and to our delight, a little thrift store that held a gem: A Bruce Springsteen CD, the Seeger Sessions. Oh Mary don’t you cry no more—we were ready. We drove and drove and drove some more. We stopped and took pictures of the red rocks, up to twenty feet tall cliffs of red sandstone. There was a VW vanagon, parked in the valley off the ridge, the side door was open and the driver was napping on the makeshift bed. He had a pretty good set up: little fridge, stove top; take a snooze when you’re tired. That’s the way to do it! Quietly, we drove on. We drove to Jackson Hole and stood under the antlers in the town square. We followed the Snake River. We stopped at the visitor’s center and explored the frontier museum, learning that Wyoming was the first US territory and then US state to grant women the right to vote, very pioneer. We drove and drove. I thought of Arapaho and Shoshone tribes. I thought of riding horseback, thru the rocky cliffs, what was it like? A lone motorcycle came up behind, out of nowhere, and passed, soon out of sight—maybe something like that.
Just when I was thinking how we could ration the water and share the pretzels, we drove over a crest into Lander and found the welcoming piney cabin facade of the Lander Wyoming Best Western. We drove thru the Grand Tetons National Park driving into Yellowstone National Park. We made it to Old Faithful, just in time to see the big geyser erupt, discovering that all the people we hadn’t seen on the road were here. We drove to the big lake, explored the manor, with massive fireplaces on each side. We drove thru the west side of the park, towards Cody, home of Buffalo Bill, and came across an eerie patch where the Mountain Pine Beetle blight has destroyed hundreds and hundreds of white bark pine,

leaving a scraggly graveyard of trees and the whir and hum of beetle larvae boring away remains, sitting on top of the silence. We drove and drove, north up thru the Bear Tooth Highway, touching into Montana. Turning around was out of the question-each steep curve and twist was higher and more narrow than the last. And, there wasn’t anywhere to turn around. You could only go up. How high does it go? Pretty high. The tops of the mountain peaks are snowcapped in August! We stopped at the overlook, equally taken with the view, as with the assortment or travelers: cyclists with packs, motorcyclists in a pack; families, retirees; young and old, taking advantage of the overlook and the views spread forth like a generous gift after the winding climb. We drove onward, heading southeast, singing along with Bruce. We knew all the words by this time. The landscape became less jagged and more pastoral with great wide expanses of prairies, hay and sugar beets. We passed a town sign: Hiland, population 10. We stopped the car and took a picture. In Cheyenne, the state capital, we explored the old train depot and train museum. We drove on, back into Colorado, having lunch in Fort Collins, an active energetic town, home to the University of Colorado. We stopped in a little shop and bought imported Tibetan prayer flags. We drove and drove. We drove ourselves right up till way past dark, to the airport Holiday Inn Express in Denver for our early flight in the morning. We must have covered 1000 miles that week. More than I had intended. Looking back I realize

that was a ridiculous amount to cover in a week. But, it was okay, I loved the landscape and the scenery. I loved the adventure of what’s next along the path, like the time we pulled over to watch elk cross a shallow portion of a river in a narrow ravine, then climb up the other side. We shared this experience with a man and his grandson who had also paused to witness. The man, a rancher, with a pick-up truck full of hay, told us how the elk would follow the train tracks down the ridge to get to the grassier side. Or the time in northwest Yellowstone, there was a traffic jam of cars, campers and RV’s watching a moving herd of buffalo. We had seen postings warning of charging buffalo. In my inexperience, I had almost dismissed the warnings, but they became an all too real possibility. I wasn’t as envious of the free riding motorcyclists at that moment. They seemed small in comparison to this herd a huge majestic mass, noisy with hooves, snorts and grunts making their way across the road. Their

Or, at the one overlook, where the family of chipmunks stole the show from the sparkling river basin. The collective group of travelers shared smiles as the chipmunks worked the afternoon crowd, entertaining for picnic scraps. Above all, I enjoyed the simplicity of sharing time and experiences with a loved one. I’m not sure what my daughter’s mountain memories will hold for her. I know my memories are all the miles covered driving that little car, a front row seat to one of nature’s most beautiful places, breathtakingly beautiful-stirring a heavy lightness in my chest while observing every shade of color and creation. If I had a do-over, maybe I would narrow my scope, or plan for a longer stay. Maybe I’ll keep that in mind for the next pioneer planning. However, for this road trip much, much, much more road, than I had imagined. I wouldn’t want to change a thing: keeping in mind the wisdom from sage travelers and philosophers alike: it’s not the destination but the journey. ✪

Southport Songwriter Festival
Louisa Brandscomb - Festival Coordinator
“It All Starts with the Song”
Inaugural Southport Songwriter Festival starts June 19 BY ALAN BEASLEY
E
veryone I know loves songs and music to some degree and most have a favorite style. Some of us are totally into music either through listening all the time to actually playing, producing or writing music or songs.
Here in Southport, we have an abundance of opportunities to be inspired to sing, write or produce music based on the lifestyle and beauty of our area. Resident Louisa Branscomb is here to help put those inspirations into practice with her upcoming first annual Southport Songwriter Festival (S2F) June 19-21, and songwriting retreats held throughout the year. Branscomb is considered a giant in acoustic songwriting, a pioneer for women in bluegrass and a strong advocate for songwriters. Louisa, along with Alison Krauss, is credited with bringing a whole new generation, particularly young women, into bluegrass with the release of Krauss’s overnight international hit, “Steel Rails,” penned by Branscomb.
“S2F has three goals,” says Branscomb. “For aspiring or professional songwriters it will provide exposure to nationally prominent songwriters, opportunities for professional camaraderie and education. For the community, it takes music beyond entertainment to make songwriting an accessible, better understood art form. And for the town of Southport, it will showcase our special community, along with its music, arts, culture and diverse businesses.” Just like the artist is inspired to paint the landscape or ocean scene, the musician is also inspired to write or sing about the same types of inspiring beauty or lifestyle. It’s all art it’s just in different forms. For some the music comes as easy as waking up and thinking new thoughts and capturing them in song or music. For others it’s a dream or desire that just doesn’t quite come so easily. With S2F, musicians can hear other musicians talk about their songwriting as they play original compositions, to get at the heart of what it takes to write a song. This kickoff festival will lead into other educational events and opportunities provided by Branscomb and Front Porch Productions throughout the year. For this inaugural festival, Branscomb has invited co-writer Claire Lynch to share in the songwriting spotlight. Branscomb and Lynch recently won the 2014 International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Song of the Year Award for “Dear Sister.” Long recognized and praised as a creative force in acoustic music, Claire Lynch is another woman-in-bluegrass pioneer who continually pushes the boundaries of the genre. She was the 2013, 2010 and 1997 IBMA Female Vocalist of the Year and has had two Grammy nominations. Dolly Parton credits Lynch with “one of the sweetest, purest and best lead voices in the music business today.” Jeanette Williams completes the featured bill of powerhouse female singer-songwriters. Jeanette boasts multiple IBMA Female Vocalist awards and shares songwriting acclaim with music and life partner, Johnny Williams. Williams, a master bluegrass guitarist and singer, holds the distinction of being the only 3-time winner of the Merlefest Chris Austin Songwriter contest, generally considered the most prestigious award for bluegrass songwriters. With renowned talent, the Southport Songwriter Festival is part of an ongoing mission to sponsor and support local, regional, and national songwriters and celebrate original music. They host songwriter events for songwriters and the general

Her goal next year is to increase sponsorship and host an outside festival, bringing in a broader slate of original music from different genres. Branscomb also hopes to have a stage or area for children, as well as a stage for local and regional songwriters. Branscomb also wants to have a variety of events in the evening in different venues, designed to create a “house concert” atmosphere in local venues. “Our goal is to step away from the detached world of online and corporate music, and bring back the ‘front porch,’” Branscomb said. “It’s a way for people to sit together and listen up close and face to face with artists as they share their music.” Branscomb welcomes help to get this first-year event off the ground. She encourages sponsors to contribute to the effort via GoFundMe or make a payment via PayPal at Louisabranscomb.com and please state, in the box option, that it is for S2F. This event is sure to be a lot of fun and will certainly help those of us that can merely write stories to convert or process them into a song so bring the entire family and prepare to be inspired! ✪

HEALTH INSURANCE
Make sure you determine what if any expenses in a foreign country will be covered by your insurance. It is unlikely you will find a provider in your network!! Consider the purchase of a policy for travel coverage if you have chronic illnesses or do not have sufficient funds to insure your transfer back home. Make sure you read the small print.

Consider pre-travel appointments to determine any current problems as well as prescriptions for medications to take with you.
MEDICATIONS
Prescription Medications: Take prescription medications in their original container and be sure to carry them with you instead of checking them in your luggage. Biking in a town while bare boating in France . My husband, Keith, and I stopped at this grocery to re provision the boat
We loaded the plane with everything we “needed” to have a wonderful family trip in a plush resort on the beach. It was only while riding bikes with the entire clan AWAY from the safety of the resort that we passed the “hospital” and I found myself in fear for the remainder of the vacation. Mind you, as a health care provider in the US, I am used to standards which while observed from the outside only, I did not see in place. I spent the following time making sure no one was injured in any way etc. While we made it through that trip unscathed, future trips required a little more planning on our part.
THE FIRST STEP
“Be Prepared” would be an excellent motto for travel...especially international travel. If you decide to venture outside of the borders of the USA, make sure you plan ahead for a safe and enjoyable experience. Consider the following...
IMMUNIZATIONS
One of the best resources I have found is the Centers for Disease Control and their website at www.cdc.gov. Any traveler can input your destination and determine what immunizations may be needed or updated. Typically, if you plan to stop in a cruise ship port for 8 hours, you will be fine. However, if you plan to trek to the rural areas, you may be given special recommendations. For example, you may need Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Rabies or even Yellow Fever immunizations. The earlier you receive them, the better your immune response will be! Aim for 2 months prior to travel to schedule your appointment. Also, Malaria prophylaxis requires that you begin the medication prior to entering the area. Contact your physician for recommendations. While some immunizations are available through the Brunswick County Health Department, Wilmington Health Associates also operates a Travel Medicine Clinic in Wilmington.
Consider Sunscreen, lip balm, hand sanitizer, insect repellant, and water purification tablets if needed. My experiences in Greece and France found that local pharmacies often had little to offer in small rural areas. Plus, you will not find what you are typically used to purchasing. A Medical Alert bracelet is especially important if you suffer from allergies, diabetes, or other chronic illnesses as well as if you have artificial heart valves, joints, etc. Bed netting, if you are really going into the wild. Extra contact lenses A copy of your health history including surgeries and recent Electrocardiogram if applicable. Finally, a good pair of walking shoes! You want to see the world and keep on trekking. Good shoes provide stability on uneven surfaces which can prevent injury but also prevent blisters and foot pain. Keeping all of these things in mind will ensure that you have a great trip! For instance - I’m sure you would rather see The Eiffel Tour than the inside of l’Office des Médecins (the doctor’s office)! Bon Voyage! ✪ www.SouthportMag.com / June 2015 / Southport Magazine 19

Finding Grouper Early Season Hunt for the big catch BY ALAN BEASLEY
I
hope everyone out there is as happy as I am to get a chance to get outside and have some fun! I have been dreaming of going out for an offshore fishing trip and I got my chance May 3rd.
Eric King shows off an American Red Snapper that he caught and then released. Photo by Alan Beasley
Grouper season had opened two days prior and the trip was on for me and, hopefully, my friend Mr. King! I had been more than ready to go for a good bottom fishing trip and I think he was to. It was just last October when we went out and brought in a nice catch of everything from Gag Grouper, Black Sea Bass, and Pink Snapper to King Mackerel. It was a very exciting day and we brought home the bounty. The only thing that was a real factor for us was the weather—it going to be in our favor for an early season trip on my very shallow style 22’ Sea Mark Center Console fishing machine. It turned out to be a decent forecast but hearing the 3’ every 13 seconds was a sure signal that we’d be riding some big swells for my vessel. The wind was north going to southeast in the afternoon and the southeast swell was hefty. We decided to give it a go and see if we could stand the weather to get offshore a little bit. The boat took a pretty good whopping on some three to five foot swells. We went for a 22 mile beater for old guys like us.
Usually you don’t want more than one to two foot seas unles you want to ache for three days. Oh well, it was a bang up ride but we did it. We pulled up on the same area that we caught the Grouper last October and expectations were high that we’d catch Sea Bass if nothing else. The anchor was ready and we were ready as I looked the bottom over on my Furuno Color Sonar. I saw some nice ledges and a few fish hanging out so I decided to go for the first spot and I gave the command to deploy the anchor as Mr. King slid it over the side. We were in 90 feet of water and it was crystal blue and we could see down at least 50 feet. The anchor hooked up and we swung right around and on top of the mark as perfect as ever. I was excited about that and was the first one to get a hook baited with a chunk of squid and topped off with a frozen Spanish Sardine. I let the line straight down beside the boat and as it dropped to the bottom it hit. I immediately took up the slack and waited for a second and wham-o some-

thing hit the bait. I set the hook and the fight was on! The fish was fighting hard and I could tell it was a good sized fish as it stalled out the electric motor on my fish-
fishing buddies as I set the clock to move if nobody catches a Grouper or nice fish that resets the clock. If time runs out we move. Well 7 minutes went by and I moved
I set the hook and the fight was on! The fish was fighting hard and I could tell it was a good size ing reel. I pulled and started to gain on the fish and as I got it off the bottom maybe 20 feet, I started to grumble and shout out unhappy remarks about the fact that I had a shark. Oh yeah it’s easy to tell if you’ve been Ocean fishing as long as I have. I knew it was a shark and told the King we might be moving. Just then he let out a quick jerk on his rod and boom he was hooked up as well. His fish seemed smaller and was fighting much different coming up from 90 feet. It was pretty quickly declared to be a Black Sea Bass and sure enough it was a nice big one! I was relieved that we didn’t have to move right away because the spot looked good on the sonar. We kept fishing and would catch a Sea Bass here and there and a Grunt and just various smaller reef fish but it just wasn’t a hot spot as I had hoped so after 15-20 minutes I yelled 7 Minutes! I’m known as 7 minute Beaz to some of my
us back 20 feet or so by letting out some more anchor rope. Mine is 600 feet so I have plenty to let out to try different areas around the anchor before pulling it up to make a farther move. As I let us back, Mr. King suddenly hooked up. He yelled for me to help as he was pulling on the rod with all his might! He had something nice for sure. He finally got the fish up and we could see it was an Amber Jack and we didn’t want any of those much less wanted to wear ourselves out fighting them. Luckily we only caught the one. We spent several hours messing with Sea Bass of various sizes before a slight move back on another spot yielded a very nice American Red Snapper that weighed around 6-8 pounds. It was so beautiful and would have been a fabulous addition to the cooler but those fish are closed to everyone and can’t be kept. Mr. King ended up catching three

CURRENTS more of them that were even larger. It was nice to see those making a comeback. All were released in good shape. The day was coming to a close and we were getting the feeling that we were not going to see a Grouper at all. We started talking about the nice Sea Bass and mentally preparing to settle for those which were ok. You just don’t always bring home the bounty when Rod-n-Reel fishing in the
He laughed and said “NO WAY PAL! If I catch another one of those Tom Petty’s he’s going on my hook!” I laughed so hard as I repeated “Tom Petty? What’s that?” He said whatever you called that thing that turned into a Grouper like that! I said it’s a Tom Tate! He just laughed and said that Tom Petty turned into a Grouper and I want another one. I smiled and said OK pal, you hooked
Grouper • Epinephelinae Ocean. It was then that Mr. King caught a smaller fish, accidentally hooking it in the tail. It was a Tom Tate. He asked me what it was and I turned around to look at it to tell him and I said, “Mr. King that is a Grouper if you send it back to the bottom”. He asked me if I wanted it and I, with a very big smile, said “why yes I’ll take it”. I took that little dude and hooked him near the tail on my rig and sent him straight to the bottom. My weight hit the bottom and I tightened up the line and just like a freight train hits a bug, I got a hit that took the rod down. I immediately pulled back with every ounce of power I had and I could tell it was a Grouper. It was just different and I knew it was a nice one. I pulled and struggled to keep it from going under a ledge or in a hole. I finally started gaining on it and after two or three more serious struggles by both me and the fish I was gaining on him fast. I could see him coming up and sure enough it was a very nice Grouper, probably weighed around 16 or so pounds. My hook was barely holding him and as I saw that Mr. King yelled what should I do? I said stand back as I grabbed the Grouper in the mouth bare handed and slung him into the boat! “Ka Boom”, I yelled and told the King to catch me another Tom Tate!
me up so I’ll hook you up. I grabbed another smaller Rod-n-Reel and tied on a Sabiki Rig and dropped it to the bottom. In seconds I had it up with 2 Tom Petty’s and several live sardines. I handed Mr. King a Tom Petty and he dropped it quickly to the bottom. He watched as I put one on my rig and dropped it to the bottom on my side. I said “well King, want to see ole Tom convert to a Gag Grouper?” He made a very sassy smart remark and about that time Ka Bam! I got another big hit! I locked down again with something and the struggle was on again! Just like before I pulled and pumped and started to gain on the fish and again I could tell it was a Grouper. I battled it to the top and swung it into the boat. I again yelled “Ka Boom” as the big Grouper hit the deck! I yelled, as I often do “WELCOME ABORD MATE”! Just then Mr. King again said foul things to me as he was not happy that I was now catching Grouper and he WAS NOT! LOL! I was laughing at him now and he was not pleased! Just then I saw that Grouper spit out a small sardine like the ones I caught on the Sabiki Rig! I wheeled around and put one of those on my hook and sent it over the side in the same place as before. The weight hit the bottom and it was instant! KA POW! I got hit harder than before and the deal was on
again! I had another Grouper on! I battled it for a little over 2-3 minutes it seemed and then I saw it. It was larger than the first two Grouper and it was hooked very good in the jaw. I saw that so when I got it to the surface I snatched it over the side of the boat and over on Mr. King’s side of the Boat. I said, “Ahoy Mate! I guess I’ll let this Grouper catch you!” I laughed so hard as he turned around and gave me a snarling dog stare. It was so funny. I was wearing him out! As it turned out, after that fish all we caught the rest of the day were a few nice Sea Bass and more sharks. The sharks moved in no matter where we moved to. The clock hit 4PM and we decided to call it quits for that trip. We ended up with 3 Grouper (that I caught) and about 30 Sea Bass mixed with some Grunts. It was not a terrible trip to be the first one for me for the season. I was sure happy to have a couple of Grouper to bring in and sell. I heard we did pretty good compared to most of the boats that went bottom fishing that day. It was also a full moon which makes it even harder some times to catch a Grouper. Some of the local fishermen went out to the Gulf Stream and had nice Wahoo, Mahi - Mahi and King Mackerel. One local dive boat had a banner day with spear guns bringing in Grouper, Hog Snapper, Mahi - Mahi and Lobster! So I think it’s finally here! If the warm weather will get here and that rain will stay away we might just get the 2015 fishing season going into full swing. Check back next month for another fishing story from mine or another local Southport fishing vessel. So for now, go fish, good luck and be safe!✪ Life is short, fish hard! Capt. Beaz

raveling through the streets of Southport, I often daydream about what it would be like to live in one of those old, historic homes. You know, the ones with all the gingerbread adornments and those black plaques hung beside the front door.
It would seem like such a fairy tale to live in one of those homes. Sometimes when I see an owner of one of these beautiful homes outside watering the flowers or collecting the mail, I want to shout out, “Hey! What’s it like living the dream?” Not wanting to freak anyone out, I control
the urge and just drive by quietly. Thanks to Verilyn McKee of Southport Realty, I got my chance to get up close and personal with an historic Southport home. The E.H. Cranmer House, or the Rainbow Cottage, at 318 N. Atlantic Ave. is listed for sale with
Southport Realty. It’s a one-and-a-half story house that was completed in the summer of 1895 by A.J. Robbins for E.H. Cranmer. Verilyn arranged for Pat Pettinger to join us to talk about her connection with this 120 year-old home. We met at the Southport Magazine office and as soon as she walked in, Pat handed me a brochure for a self-guided walking tour through Southport. She pointed to number eight and said, “Read this and then we will talk.” It said, “A.E. Stevens House - 1984. Mr. Stevens built a 3-story house on the corner of Brown and Potts Street (now 319 Atlantic Ave.) for his bride-to-be. The engagement ended when she said ‘No’ and married his best friend. The newly-married couple built a house across the street. Mr. Stevens never married.” Pat then said, “That was my grandmother!” She is the granddaughter of E. H. Cranmer and Mary Elizabeth Pearce. Mary was the girl who said no to Mr. Stevens and married his best friend, E.H. Cranmer, and they built a house across the street, the E.H. Cranmer House. It took me a while but I finally connected the dots. She recalled the story in great detail of how her grandmother, Mary Elizabeth, came to marry E.H. Cranmer.

We took a ride over to look at the house on 318 N. Atlantic Ave. Standing outside, Pat pointed out features that were there when she was young, like the brackets paired below the cornice along the broad frieze. I glanced to the backyard and pictured a little boy running around being chased by a goose. And I glanced across the street at the home of the A.E. Stevens who was E.H. Cranmer
“Well, she was living in her mother’s home and I guess a couple of people in town had telephones by then but it was not widespread,” Pat explained. “So you still sent messages by little boys, whoever you could grab on the street. They were happy to run an errand for you for a nickel or a dime. And so he sent this little boy to the house with a message that said, ‘Do you see any reason why we shouldn’t be married this afternoon?’ And so evidently she replied yes because they arranged to get married. So she goes out for a walk with her younger sister as a chaperone, because she wouldn’t be allowed to meet him by herself. So they meet up with him by accident and they go the Methodist parsonage because he is Methodist, she is Episcopalian, and the parsonage is not at home. So they just head right on down the street to the Baptist church. Well the little sister by now realizes that something is going on and she runs home to tell what’s happening but doesn’t matter because by the time anybody found out, they were married!” Pat said her Grandmother Pearce had long black hair when she was young and many thought she was part Native American. “Of course, I wasn’t around then. I only knew her with grey and then white hair. She always wore hair in a coronet, a braid that she wrapped around on top of her head. And when she washed her hair she sat out in the yard and she combed it in the sun. And she was
very careful to keep all the hair. You didn’t let hair escape because the birds might get it and put it in their nest and you would get a migraine headache!” Pat laughed. She also remembers her grandmother scolding a young girl who wasn’t going to vote. “She was a feminist before the word was invented,” Pat said. She told that young girl how hard they fought to get the right to vote and she better go down and vote. E.H. Cranmer was elected Mayor before the age of 21 and had to wait until he turned 21 to be sworn in to the office. He studied law and Pat explained how her grandmother would stay up at night with him and fix him coffee to keep them awake so he could study. He passed the bar exam with the highest score that anyone had ever made. “I have the framed letter from the Governor congratulating him,” she proudly boasted. He later became a judge and then served one term as a state senator. Even though Pat was not alive when her grandparents lived in the Rainbow Cottage, she remembers listening to her mother and others tell stories about the house. Apparently the woman who lived behind her grandparents raised geese. There was this one goose that took a dislike to her uncle and would chase him around the yard, nipping at his calves. The woman who owned the goose would run out of her house yelling at the children to quit teasing her goose.

best friend. The one who had hoped to marry Pat’s grandmother but was rejected. I wondered if A.E. and E.H. remained friends and how hard it must have been for him to live across the street from them. When we left, Pat said that Southport Trinity United Methodist Church on Nash Street had a stained glass window that was dedicated to the Cranmer family. Verilyn and I took a trip to see the beautiful window, which hangs to

BIZ Q & A
Deborah’s Place
Virginia transplant finds her way to sunny Southport
W
hen you step into this shop on Howe Street, you’ll find unique items at affordable prices—everything from tea towels to concrete bird baths. BY KRIS BEASLEY
Q: How long has Deborah’s Place been in business?
Q: What do you sell the most of at Deborah’s Place?
A: We have been in business since 1997. We opened the first store in Ashland Va. Then moved to Fredericksburg, VA where we had two stores. Then in 2010 we decided to move to Southport and re-opened Deborah’s Place in Southport in 2012.
A: I sell a lot of ladies scarves, jewelry, purses, hats and yes, a lot of tea towels. I try to find great products at good prices and pass it on to my customers.
Q: Describe what kind of store Deborah’s Place is?
A: Deborah’s is a ladies accessories, gift, garden and home décor shop. I like to have a little bit of everything it keeps it fun.
Q: Tell us about some of the unique items that you carry? A: Well, you can stop by Deborah’s and we’ll accessorize you for a party, find you a hostess gift (maybe a funny word towel), wine accessories or for your garden how about a concrete statue or bird bath? If you love it, it’s unique to you.
Q: How do you pick out what you want to carry in the store?
A: Mostly by gut. I’ve been buying gifts for people since I was a little kid. I like to have something for everyone; it’s the fun part of my job.
Q: Are you expecting any new items in over the summer?
A: I’m always on the lookout for something different and fun. I get new items in all year; I like to keep it fresh and new

They Have your Back Check Six Brewery fast becoming a front-runner in the craft beer industry
HAT IN THE RING INDIA PALE ALE - ABV: 8.0%
BY JOSH PITTMAN AND BRANDI SIMMONS
B
runswick County’s very first craft brewery is the brainchild of Noah Goldman and Tim Hassel, home brewers turned commercial. Their shared love of beer was born in a garage almost ten years ago. That love blossomed into the taproom that stands today; though, it seemed as though an opening date was far from achievable, their efforts have shown that this business is not one that will be kept down. Joining the ranks alongside nearly 80 craft breweries in the state of North Carolina, Check six takes its name from aviation, an idea cultivated and solidified in our own Kitty Hawk. “Check your six” means to watch behind you and make sure an enemy plane isn’t coming up to attack. In craft beer, Hassel and Goldman have your back, and other craft breweries should watch for this underdog to become a front-runner.
There is something for everyone at Check Six Brewery, even the wine connoisseur in your group can be just as satisfied with the choices offered. The Staff is welcoming and the décor is polished with a touch of industrial. This could easily be your stop before dinner on date night or bring your own meal! They are food friendly!
WRIGHT FLYER CREAM ALE - ABV: 5.6%
crowd-friendly beer opens with a “biscuity” body, ever-so-slightly hopped for a dash of complexity. Goldman and Hassel build their flavor to a crescendo, leaving us with a soft, sweet finish, perfect to down at the end of a sweltering summer’s day.
What better homage to the Tar Heel state can this brewery give than naming a brew after Orville and Wilbur, the fathers of aviation as we know it? Pale straw with a dense, creamy head, this
In honor of the first American squadron of fighter pilots in World War I, this amber beer doesn’t fail to live up to its namesake. Hopped with Cascade, Chinook, and Willamette hops, its bitter profile is balanced by a refreshing floral note. Combined with grapefruit and caramel tones through the middle thanks to the malty backbone, this brew will stand up to even the toughest beer critics at the backyard barbecue (and they’ll like it, too!).
Pale straw and hazy, this beer greets the nose with sweet banana tones; the light, creamy mouthfeel gives way to an effervescent citrus note, calling to mind sandy beaches and crashing waves. This hit, named for the Red Baron’s colorful fleet, is graced with all-natural coconut flavor lacing the tongue after each delicious swig; despite the coconut title the nutty note mingles perfectly with the banana, a toasty characteristic ever so slightly present in the wake of each fruity mouthful. Check Six’s Southport taproom location proudly tapped a keg of this hefeweizen as its first light beer on tap, which was met with an undeniably positive response ✪.
BRASS RING AMERICAN ALE - ABV: 6.4%
If ever there were a gateway beer to welcome fresh faces to craft beer, this would be an excellent candidate. Its medium body is the perfect vehicle for both the caramel and light fruit tones to grace the palate. With a finish as crisp as the collar on freshly pressed dress blues, a slight sweetness can be found. Hassel tells us that the Brass Ring is an accolade received by those pilots who have completed a minimum of twenty years of service, an accolade he, too, holds.

Southport Smoke House is the real deal PHOTOS AND STORY BY REBECCA JONES
P
eople take their barbecue seriously. It’s an art form as unique to the region as to a person’s taste. The folks at Southport Smoke House—know this, and have perfected their hickory smoked meat. Celebrating one year as of April 2015, Southport Smoke House is the joint venture of Troy and Tabitha Knight and Jim and Carla Sparks.
SOUTHPORT SMOKEHOUSE 1102 N Howe Street (910) 363-5035 Hours: Mon-Sun 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. southportsmokehouse.com
Troy is the full time pastor at Generations Church in Southport, and Jim is a retired police officer that works in sniper training for the Marines. What brought this unlikely pair into the BBQ business? The backyard pit. The Knights and Sparks are neighbors in Southport. Evenings and weekends smoking pork and beef brisket generated a lot of discussion about the “flavor of the meat”. Both agreed the hickory smoked flavor, “the kind that gets into the meat” emphasizes Troy- is key. Backyard talk became reality when the building in front of the Olde Southport Village Shoppes became available. In the beginning, with the help of Southport Smoke House manager- Daniel Crouson- who Troy says- “does everything!”Pit masters would tend the fire- cooking the meat all night- that is -until the Oyler Smoker from Mesquite, Texas arrived. The Oyler, weighing in at about 4000 pounds, “needed a crane and a semi- to get in place- “ explains Troy- “but so worth itthis is a wood smoker- we use 100% hickory wood- from suppliers in the area- start the coals- put the hickory on top- and let it burn all night- the rotisserie smoker cooks the meat 12 - 14 hours a night, the dampers open and close- feeding the fire oxygen to achieve the right temperatures for the slow cooked meat.” Troy says,
“We want the customer to taste the wood smoke- the flavor absorbed in the meatwhen you see a little red ring- that’s the smoke ring.” A true smokehouse. The big black Oyler is impressive- as are the cords of hickory stacked outside. The pork and beef briskets are cooked all night. The chicken and ribs are put on in the morning so they are ready for lunch. But nothing is as impressive to the eyes as is to the nose: the smell! That warm sweet smoky slow cooking smell that makes you hungry- even when you didn’t know you were hungry!
Everything is prepared in house. Homemade potato salad and Cole slaw both red slaw, the regional vinegar based and white slaw, the mayonnaise based. Mac n cheese, green beans, baked beans and of course banana pudding are some of the sides. Plates, sandwich combos, Ala carte items and kids meals are available. But anything about BBQ would not be complete without some discussion of the sauce. At the Southport Smoke House the meat is served as is- hickory smoked with a dry rub- customers can choose their sauce at the sauce bar. The sauce bar has five different sauces: sweet, spicy, tangy- the tangy is Carla Sparks’ Grandfather’s family recipe, Eastern North Carolina-vinegar and red pepper, and Lexington style, made with cola and vinegar. Everyone seems to have a favorite: when asked what the owners favorite sauces
are, Troy, who is from Texas, “where BBQ is a verb” he laughs, leans towards the hot and spicy- ‘Tabitha, from North Carolina likes the Lexington, Carla probably favors the tangy, the family recipe,” and Jim? Troy laughs,” probably- doesn’t use sauce-believing, good smoked meat moist enough with great flavor- doesn’t need sauce”. The Southport Smoke House has dinein and carry out. The dine- in feels like a cozy country BBQ joint- with tin siding and an old sliding barn door, red antique accents, ceiling fans and old timey soda bottles used as vases with flowers on the tables. There is also outdoor seating shaded by the big oak out front. The Southport Smoke House also caters and delivers for big crowds- meetings, weddings and reunions. Customers have choices of meat combinations, sides and sauce. ✪

SCENE
Wild
Take the journey BY EMI LY KLINEFELTER AND JENNIFER BARNETT
W
hen we are preparing to watch a movie that Jen and I haven’t seen, we like to pick an actor in the movie, do a little research about them and dedicated dinner to them. For the movie Wild we decided to pick the star of the film Reese Witherspoon. For dinner we ate foods that this sweet, southern mother had listed as some of her favorites. Our meal couldn’t only be fried chicken and cake, so like any good southerner, we added Mac n Cheese and Sweet TeaCheers to you Reese! While doing research about Reese we developed this image of her in our minds; a loving mother, full of smiles and sunshine, silly, lovable- a Sweet Home Alabama mixed with Legally Blonde type of woman. Well… that image was chewed up spat out rolled around in the dirt and kicked a couple times with the opening scene of Wild. Horrifying screams, painful moans, “look away look away” began to instantly fill the room- and that was just us! Thanks for ruining our Reese illusion right out of the gates! Each one of us holds a breaking point within our souls and in this movie Cheryl Strayed (Reese Witherspoon) is brought to the point with the tragic loss of her single mother Bobbi played by Laura Dern (The song Pocket Full of Sunshine comes to mind when I think about her mother). The characters in this movie are intelligent, well-read women who in spite of themselves make wreck less decisions! The mother, Bobbi, was desperate to be loved and loved her children very openly and honestly. Unfortunately her insecurity manifested in an abusive relationship, which she eventually recovered and grew from. Cheryl and her brother Leif (Keena McRae) endured the wrath of their abusive father

until one day they all ran away together. This definitely plays a role in the development of each child. The poor choices they make as young adults clearly is the result their upbringing. With the upset of her loss, Cheryl spirals into a few years of bad decisions and self-destructive behavior which leads to her divorce from her best friend Paul (Thomas Sadoski). She decides one morning after a conversation with her friend Aimee (Gaby Hoffman) that she is going to walk until she becomes the women her mother wanted her to be. So she picks up a book on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT, which we later learn is one of the country’s longest and toughest trails) and with no experience what so ever, buys out the REI store, puts it all on her back and begins her walk. Her determination is full on and you can’t help
Giggles
Family
Date Night
but hope that she doesn’t get hurt literally stepping out the front door! Not even 30 miles into her hike Cheryl begins to weaken and think about quitting- how far does she get? You will have to watch and find out! The movie reminded us- a little bit- of Alexander Supertramp in the movie Into the Wild - mixed with a really intense detox program. Wild was both insightful, long, and a little strange at times, but it reminds us that we can’t judge or compare how big our individual struggles feel, for a bump in the road - no matter how big it may seem to you - may be so hindering to another person. No matter how much support or how many coping skills you may have in your arsenal even the most sophisticated person can hit rock bottom. Today’s society has really tainted our minds for we found ourselves holding our breath every time she came across a different person on her journey (we learned that not many women take on the PCT- yet there is a whole community that does the trail!). We are so programed to believe the worst in strangers! Cheryl finds that in the wild, when you are alone, you don’t have a choice but to trust- cautiously. We found ourselves talking about whether or not we would do it - at all. Jen, being an extremely cautious person would not have step foot out the door alone whereas Emily mentioned several times how fun it would be. We were watching the movie with others in the room and despite our varying ages (16-49), we all had parts of the movie we could relate to. If you are looking for a film to drive an interesting conversation, we would recommend this one. The soundtrack was wonderful (think Simon and Garfunkle), the scenery beautiful, the acting was great- we felt they did a nice job filling in the movie even though most of it is Reese alone. And oh! There is a spirit animal and a blonde little boy we refer to as the Creepy Dutch Boy- though Emily’s husband, Derek, found him very significant! The general consensus was that Jen and I watch too many horror movies… You’ll see. Anyway, over all, this movie night was a success and we are not mourning for the 2 hours we lost in the process. Now days that is saying something! ✪

BATHING SUITS THROUGH VINTGE ADVERTISING
June 16 7:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M. The Southport Community Building, 223 East Bay Street.
This presentation looks at bathing suits from 1910 to the 1960s through vintage advertising. From the early suits that look like dresses in the early 1900s to the baby doll look of the 60s, these magazine pages also show a little slice of what life was like during the roaring 20s, the Great Depression, World War II, the Fifties and Sixties. Not to be left out, the men will see many examples of what they have worn to the beach over the years. Elaine Blackmon Henson grew up in Wilmington and has loved going to the beach all her life. A retired elementary teacher, she began collecting post cards after she and her husband became the owners of a vintage 1940 beach house. The collection led to her book Carolina Beach: A Postcard History published in 2007. Program is free, call the Museum at 910-457-0003 to register. www.ncmaritimemuseums.com.
