Ten year old California native Junior Reporter and internet star, Lindalee Rose was spotted on the Southport Beach, chillin out, enjoying the scenic water views. She spent several days in Southport and Wilmington visiting family. While she was here, she even got to meet a rescue Pelican up close at Sea Biscuit Wildlife in Oak Island. Lindalee has her own Youtube Channel where she interviews celebrities, does TV recaps, and Toy Lab, Kid Kitchen, movie and tv reviews too. If you are a Doctor Who fan you’re going to love her episode recaps that she started doing when she was only four years old. You’ll find her under LindaLee Rose on Youtube.

n Saturday, August 11, 2018, Wilmington will be hosting the fifth annual Cape Fear Purple Heart Dinner as a tribute to the Purple Heart recipients in the five-county area surrounding Wilmington. The Wilmington Convention Center, 5pm

The Purple Heart is awarded to those who have been wounded or killed while serving with the US Military. Established by George Washington in 1782 as the badge of military merit, the Purple Heart’s order includes the phrase “Let it be known that he who wears the military order of the Purple Heart has given of his blood in the defense of his homeland and shall forever be revered by his fellow countrymen.” The mission of the Cape Fear Purple Heart Association is to provide a forum for the community to honor Purple Heart recipients and their families, to foster an

environment of goodwill among combat wounded veterans, to promote patriotism and to encourage the sharing of recipient experiences so future generations will know of the sacrifices made by veterans and their families. Your sponsorship is needed to make this tribute possible. Your sponsorship will allow us to honor Purple Heart recipients and a family member of each recipient. The attached sponsor sheet will help you determine what level of tax deductible donation you will make. All contributions will be used solely for the event which will be

Local Artist Tony Fotia lights up the room! STORY & PHOTOS BY CARLA EDSTROM

emember that art school ad that used to run in magazines that had a picture of a simple cartoon and underneath it read the caption, “Can you draw this?” Famous Artist School was a mail correspondence school started in 1948 in Westport Connecticut and taught by several nationally famous artists.

There were twelve artists in all that were at the top of their art field including Norman Rockwell and Albert Dorne. Local artist Anthony Fotia knows all too well because once he drew that picture in the ad, his life changed forever and opened up to a life of working as an successful artist. His success story even became an ad for the school. “They came to my studio in Greenwich and took a picture of me and put it in their TV Guide Magazine ad,“ said Fotia. “They had my picture in the ad from the Greenwich studio saying that I worked in a mail room, took their coarse and now I

worked in the art field.” Since then, Fotia had a very impressive career as a graphic artist creating a company from the ground up and creating ads for large companies such as General Foods, Nestle Foods, US Tobacco, and even Weight Watchers. “I was president and CEO of APF Graphics, Inc. and APF Design Associates in Port Chester, NY for nearly 30 years,” said Fotia. “It started in my dad’s basement with one drawing board and a lot of cold calls to corporate graphic design buyers. Over the next few years, I moved my studio to the second

ART BEAT floor apartment and eventually to my own building as my assignments and staff grew. In addition to corporate accounts, my firm was hired to do the marketing and graphics for the promotional collateral material for Gerry Cooney, the heavyweight boxer who fought Larry Holmes in Las Vegas,” he said. “We definitely had a diversified list of assignments.” After talking with Fotia, I quickly realized that he is basically a Renaissance man of the art world, using his creativity in many ways from music to art and also writing. His two children’s eBooks, The Adventures of Barnaby Bookworm I and II, are cute stories highlighting the life of a bookworm who lives inside a library with his parents and the adventures he has there. “The idea of a children’s book came when my wife and I retired to Southport,” Fotia explained. He has also spent some time reading these stories to schoolchildren, which he also enjoys. Fotia’s short career in the music business is an amazing tale itself, even though he is very modest about it. ”I was in the music business before the art business,” he explained. He and a friend formed a band called The Dolphins and they recorded a song called Rainbow’s End in the early 1960’s with a major record label that received a lot of radio play, but unfortunately the label folded and their music career never took off. “We appeared on the stage of the Alan Freed Radio Show back in 1959, and we were asked to back up Johnny Maestro for two songs on his 16 Candles album while he was in between the bands, The Crests and Brooklyn Bridge.” He explained what an amazing experience that was and he is grateful he has such great memories of that time in his life. He credits artist Salvador Dali’s style as one of his biggest artistic influences. After seeing Dali’s oil painting Crucifixion Corpus Hypercubus at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, he wanted his work to capture such fine detail as Dali’s paintings. “It became my desire to illustrate as much detail as possible in my work,” said Fotia. His life has slowed down a bit to fit the pace of retirement in Brunswick County, but he still loves to create art and taking photos on his daily walks. Fotia’s paintings usually reflect the coastal wildlife, including his mesmerizing sea turtles, coastal seascapes and majestic herons. His mastery of fine details in his acrylic paintings is straightforward and the scenes often look like a photograph. I feel like I am under water with the sea turtles ready to swim away with them. I am eager to see what is next for this multi talented artist. You can find more of Fotia’s work at Franklin Square Gallery and the Coastal

A little look back at the Quarantine Station and the Naturalization Ceremony. STORY BY KASS FINCHER

U

ndoubtedly one of the most moving and patriotic events of the annual N.C. 4th of July celebration here in Southport is the naturalization ceremony that takes place on the grounds of Fort Johnston.

In cooperation with the Department of Homeland Security’s United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, the participants are administered the Oath of Citizenship, which goes as follows: “I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state or sovereignty, of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the armed forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God.” Starting 22 years ago in partnership with our local festival, this year the ceremony will take place on Tuesday, July 3. Following the ceremony, the Brunswick Town chapter of the Daughters of the Revolution will serve refreshments and welcome the new citizens and their families. It will be an emotional and celebratory day for them, many of whom might have spent years working toward achieving citizenship. Though these new citizens might not have arrived here by boat, many travelers and immigrants from years ago may have come through our area on vessels originating in Europe and Latin America. They were detained in quarantine until the boats were determined to be free of disease. But in the early Civil War years, quarantine laws in the South were loosened due to the Confederacy’s desperate need for supplies. Then in 1862, a devastating yellow fever epidemic in Wilmington broke

out, the disease believed to have been brought here on a blockade runner from Nassau. The public outrage caused government officials to reinstate quarantine stations on the Cape Fear River. The Federal Point Preservation Society describes the regulations: “All vessels from ports south of Cape Fear had to stop at the station near Deep Water Point for inspection by the quarantine physician and be ‘quarantined for fifteen days, and thoroughly fumigated.’ A fee of five dollars was required of each ship inspected; for every sick person taken to the hospital from a quarantined vessel, ‘a fee not exceeding three dollars a day’ was charged.” A quarantine station was built at Pine Creek (probably now known as Price’s Creek) in 1869. It unfortunately burned in 1882; the lighthouse there was used as a temporary station and hospital for several years. Apparently the officials felt the station there and others were helping keep the Wilmington port and city free of disease. The Federal Point Society reports on the quarantine physician’s assessment at the time: “The physician stated: ‘I believe it can be confidently asserted that Wilmington is one of the healthiest cities on the Atlantic Coast. Yellow fever has visited that city but once in thirty years. The quarantine establishment opposite Deep Water Point has intercepted it invariably since its establishment there, and kept it out of your city.’” With federal funding, a new station was erected in 1897 on pilings about a half mile offshore and a mile east of Southport, halfway between the upper end of Battery Island and #4 beacon light at Price’s Creek. It had four houses – the disinfecting house, the hospital, the attendants quarters, and the medical officers’ quarters. For boats needing fumigation, a hose ran down into the vessel and disinfectants were forced in by steam until the ship was covered. There were several types of vessels that

The old Quarantine Station

were required to stop at the quarantine station, according to the Federal Point Historical Society: 1) All vessels, American or foreign, that had any sickness on board. 2) All vessels from foreign ports, except vessels from the Atlantic or Pacific coasts of British America, not having on board passengers or the effects of passengers not resident in America for sixty days; and except foreign vessels arriving by way of non-infected domestic ports. 3) All vessels from infected domestic ports. Over the years, as improvements were made in treating and containing infectious diseases, the need for quarantine stations declined. The station here was finally decommissioned in 1939. Allowed to deteriorate over time, the structure eventually caught fire and was destroyed in 1951. All that was left was the concrete platform for the steel tower. Although depicted on area navigational charts and located 600 feet from the shipping channel, some local residents felt the remaining concrete platform should be removed; others maintained it should be kept as an historical landmark. But when a recreational boater collided with the platform on a summer’s night in 2012, a woman was killed and other passengers injured. The local public was divided; should this historic remnant be removed? Or at least illuminated? Complicating the debate was indecision over who was actually responsible for the structure. The Coast Guard initially disavowed their authority to “remove, mark or light” the platform. However after years of pressure from U.S. Representative Mike McIntyre and the boat owner who lost his wife in the accident, the Coast Guard in 2014 agreed to allow the platform to be illuminated.

Southport Magazine 2016-2017 SOI Chamber Small Business of the Year Winner

Today the platform remains, the last vestige of what was once the entry point for all vessels headed for the Wilmington port. But today, vessels hundreds of feet long from all over the world head up our river regularly, bound for the port unimpeded. We welcome them, of course, and the trade they bring. And we also warmly welcome all the new citizens, however they arrive, when they join us this Fourth of July.

Cheers The Big Three

The low down on the back bone of American Beer, no crafts in sight STORY AND PHOTO BY JEFF STITES

A

merican brewing has been known for some of the world’s biggest producers of beer. The Big American Brewers, Anheuser-Busch, Miller and Coors, have become known for light beers that are, depending on your perspective, very easy to drink or essentially flavorless.

Each brewer, though, has a heritage of more flavorful beers, usually pilsner-style lagers. What better way to celebrate the Fourth of July in the Cheers column than by taking a look at Big American Breweries? The trouble with that plan is that the Big Three American brewers are not American anymore. We live in a global economy now and the brewing industry has experienced an unprecedented amount of multi-national consolidation. Anheuser-Busch was acquired by Belgian beverage conglomerate InBev, Miller Brewing was purchased by South African Breweries (SAB) and Coors Brewing merged with Canada’s Molson Brewing. You can’t blame these businesses, it’s a dog eat dog world and consolidation across national borders both creates economies of scale and opens up new markets, but it’s hard to get all “rah rah USA” about Belgian, South African and Canadian companies. What’s a Cheers columnist to do? There is plenty of brewing going on in America, don’t misunderstand. The craft brewing boom has led to a situation where it’s hard to find yourself more than a few miles away from a small brewer anywhere in the country. The problem is that the craft beer phenomenon is predicated on the idea that these brewers will stay small. As soon as one hits a certain level of success in terms of number of barrels of beer produced, the craft beer drinking public decides they are no longer “craft.” It’s kind of silly, really. Whether you make a small batch or a large number of huge batches, if you use the same recipe it’s the same beer. I’ve chosen three brewers that represent a middle ground between the crafts and the huge multinationals. All are Ameri-

can-owned and American-made. The first, and oldest, is Yuengling, founded in 1829 in Pottsville, PA. Yuengling is still owned by the Yuenglings and still brewed in Pottsville but has opened two other breweries, one in Florida and one in Texas, to bring its products to a larger audience. The second is Pabst, also dating back to the 1800s. Pabst has seen its ups and downs but was most recently acquired by an American investor who seems to be showing the company some love, even going as far as building a brewery. Pabst has been contracting to be brewed by Miller for years, but retains its independence as a company. Pabst has been sort of a collector of American brewing history by buying up and producing smaller classic regional brews such as Lone Star, Olympia and Ballantine. I appreciate that. The third brewer I’ve selected is an example of a craft brewer out-growing the craft label, the Boston Beer Company, makers of Sam Adams. Sam Adams arguably kicked off the craft brew craze, but now it’s hard to find a beer aficionado who considers them a true craft brew. They have grown beyond the label, though they still very much consider themselves a craft brewer, and, I would argue, back it up with some very creative and delicious offerings on par with anything being cooked up by the newer upstarts. I’ve chosen two old stand-bys and one new offering to review. Pabst Brewing Company Pabst Blue Ribbon The Label Says: This is the Original Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer. Nature’s choicest products provide its prized flavor. Only the finest of hops and grains are used. Selected as American Best in 1893.

My Take: Pabst Blue Ribbon has been experiencing a resurgence among the younger beer drinker set for a few years now. I think they are attracted to it exactly because the Pabst company doesn’t really engage in any marketing to speak of. But why bother, really? It’s just a good, classic American lager that everyone has heard of and those who try come to love. I have to admit, this is one of my favorite go-to summer/beach beers. And it is pretty easy on the wallet to boot. D. G. Yuengling & Son Yuengling Traditional Lager The Label Says: American Owned. Family Operated. America’s Oldest Brewery My Take: See, I told you Yuengling had been around a long time. As a Pennsylvania native, I’m partial to Yuengling. Heck, I even have Dick Yuengling’s (the owner of the company) autograph on a bar napkin somewhere. Yuengling is a little more amber and tad more robust than the rest of the big, mass-produced American lagers. Craft brewers will poo-poo it, but this is a finely crafted brew, and delicious. Boston Beer Company Sam ‘76 4.7% ABV 12 IBU The Label Says: Sam ’76 is a perfect union of lager and ale, giving you a craft beer with the flavor of an ale and the refreshment and crisp finish of a lager. The result is revolutionary. My Take: What could be more patriotic than a Samuel Adams named after our country’s year of birth? Sam ’76 is a mixture of ale and lager (someday I’ll do a column on the difference) and though it’s hard to

Southport Magazine 2016-2017 SOI Chamber Small Business of the Year Winner

argue that isn’t a gimmick, this beer works very well. It’s not the “revolutionary” idea the label claims, but it is very refreshing and more flavorful than the bright yellow color would lead you to believe.

SAVOR As Sweet As It Gets!

Delicious Lil and John’s Sweetreat ice cream hits the spot...every time. STORY BY KASS FINCHER

W

hat is now Lil and John’s Sweetreat Ice Cream Parlor on Oak Island actually started out in Southport in 1978. John and Lillian Astoske had just relocated to Southport after John retired from his career at Pfizer. Realizing they couldn’t just sit at home, they looked around for a business opportunity. Amazingly, at that time there was no ice cream parlor in Southport. So they opened their own, initially locating in the building where Taylor’s is now. The couple was active in the community; everyone knew and loved Lil and John. They moved the business across the street a couple of years after starting it, and stayed there until retiring, once again, in 2003. Granddaughter Diana Laster, the current owner of the business, describes their second retirement. “Their grandson, my brother Derek,

meant absolutely everything to them,” she says, “so they closed up shop and started following him around to watch him play baseball. Today he’s a junior at South Brunswick, has been on the varsity baseball team since he was a freshman. In the mid-2000s he was on a lot of travel teams, so they would travel with him.” Although Lil and John Astoske passed

away in recent years, their popular ice cream parlor would eventually find its way back into the community. Granddaughter Diana, a native of Oak Island and Southport, relates how years later she found herself busily restoring her family’s ice cream tradition. “In December of 2015,my fiance and business partner – Brian Keesee – said there’s a building over on Oak Island that I need

to knock down and put up a new structure. There was a girl who made ice cream there in the old building who wanted to continue doing that. So we said that would be great, maybe three quarters of the building would be retail (today’s Tidal Merchant) and the rest would be ice cream. Unfortunately she backed out just before we were to open both businesses in the summer of 2016. I

SAVOR wasn’t sure what to do!” But things would work out for Laster. “I was so busy at the retail store that I couldn’t think about the ice cream business,” she says. “Finally, toward the middle of July, a light bulb went off. My grandparents had a successful ice cream business, why don’t I just revive that name? Modernize the logo, do what they did, just not have the sit-down area. I talked to my dad and aunt about it, and they said, that would be awesome, let’s do it!” They found some memorabilia from the old business and spent some time researching handmade ice cream flavors and equipment and updating the logo design. “We made my ice cream logo guy a little less scary – he had a huge nose and six fingers on one hand – we had to pretty him up some!” laughs Laster. In search of the right flavors to offer, Keesee and Laster visited many different ice cream parlors in the area – Wilmington, Shallotte, Ocean Isle. Nothing was really impressing them, until they visited “Beaches and Cream” in Holden Beach. “I tasted their ice cream,” says Laster, “and I wondered what are they doing? This is so good! So we picked their brain to find out why. They asked where are you buying your milk from? We said oh, the food service – milk, cream, sugar, all of it. She said no, no no. She gave us the phone number of a local dairy farm in Dunn – Jackson Dairy – who has 600 cows, all free range, hormone free, antibiotic free; he sells a 12 and 16 percent fat content. We went with the 16 percent.” Delivering each Wednesday, Mr. Jackson of Jackson Dairy is a 90 year-old source of knowledge as well as excellent dairy products. When they first opened, Laster turned to him for ideas on flavor recipes. “We couldn’t figure out the chocolate, and he sold us a powder that we put in and it makes the chocolate so great,” she says. “I should have asked him before! He also makes ice cream and sells it to other ice cream parlors that don’t want to make their own. He’s given us quite a few pointers on how to perfect the recipes.” Apparently that relationship has paid off. Starting in August 2016, the business has been very successful. With over 24 regular and seasonal choices, the chocolate recipe has made that flavor the 3 to 1 favorite, according to Laster. The banana pudding ice cream, with vanilla wafers mixed in, is also very popular. Each serving of ice cream is weighed to provide consistent portions, with 1 scoop at 5 ounces, 2 scoops at 10 and 3 scoops at 15 ounces. Milkshakes are big sellers too. The owners and staff are equally committed to quality and customer service. “My aunt Jane retired from BB&T in 2016,” says Laster. “We vacationed with her in Hawaii,

Diana Lester and her brother Derek Astoske

and I said I’d love for you to be a part of Sweetreat! Happily, about two weeks after we got back she came to work with us here. She makes ice cream during the day Monday-Thursday and Brian makes it on the weekend.” But continuing her family’s tradition didn’t mean everything had to remain the same. “Over there I was told it wasn’t really about the ice cream, it was more about Lil and John and their personalities,” explains Laster. “Over here it’s definitely more about the ice cream and I’m really proud of that – I feel like we’re making a really good product that people like! I get postcards, after peo-

ple have gone back home, saying thank you so much. Customer service is very important to me. I worked at a restaurant here on Oak Island when I was in high school and they hammered into me how crucial customer service is, and that really stuck with me.” The focus is not just about pleasing customers; it’s also about listening to what they like or want Sweetreat to create. “I like to do at least one feature flavor per week in the summer,” says Laster. “Last year we did a pineapple upside down cake. We just did it for a week, but people came back asking for that again. We got one unusual idea from a customer who comes here every day. He said, ‘have you ever thought about making a Cheerwine ice cream?’ We thought, wow, that’s a North Carolina product and could be a big hit. So we bought syrup from Cheerwine and we’re making a float, complete with Cheerwine and Cheerwine-flavored ice cream!” The parlor’s regular customers and tourists alike swarm the business during the season, with four to five thousand people frequenting Sweetreat each week during the summer. Right now, the parlor is open from March to December. But that could change. Laster explains: “We don’t use any

preservatives or additives, so the shelf-life of our ice cream – about one month – could be an issue in the off season (no problem in season!). Also we just have walk-up windows right now. But our bulk sales – pints and quarts – have increased, so that’s a possible winter product that could grow.” It’s pretty clear that Sweetreat’s infectious commitment to quality and their customers is their simple mantra for success.“We’re just here to make you happy,” Laster says. “Whether it means replacing your child’s scoop that dropped on the floor or replacing a flavor you don’t like – we’re all about making our customers happy.” And who wouldn’t be happy with three scoops of heaven?

HOMESTYLE Surviving Stress?

This gorgeous ocean front rental will make sure you do! STORY BY KRISTIN GOODE

I

used to walk the beaches all the time and just be in awe of the beautiful homes,” says Connie Brennan, who grew up in New Hanover County between Castle Hayne and Carolina Beach. Now Brennan’s second home, named Surviving Stress, is one of those beautiful homes that catches your eye as you drive down Caswell Beach Road, its stately white columns contrasting sharply against its Mediterranean blue siding.

“It’s kind of like a dream come true,” adds Brennan. That dream was a long time in the making, starting in the early 1990’s when she was living in Maryland after marrying her husband Tim. “I got very, very homesick,” says Connie of being so far away from the Carolina coast. In those early years of marriage, the seed of having a second home on the coast was planted when Tim took a golfing vacation to Oak Island. The plan at the time was not to have a palatial home, but rather a small home base at the Oak Island Beach Villas. Connie was five months pregnant with their first son when they closed on a three-bedroom condo. For years the family would make the trip from Maryland to Caswell Beach over Easter weekend and spend two weeks

there with Tim’s mother. But after the couple had their third son, not to mention two dogs, they realized they were quickly outgrowing their little piece of paradise. On one of those trips, while driving along Caswell Beach Road the couple saw two empty properties. “If we can make it happen I would love to live on the ocean,” Connie recalls saying to Tim. And make it happen they did. In the early 2000’s the Brennans partnered with builder Mike Gore on a house plan they found online. The plan had something southern about it, says Connie, like “something you would see in downtown Wilmington.” They also worked with Katy Mercer Interiors Inc. after receiving her name from the then owners of Oak Island Accommodations, Dick and Sherri

Marshall. When the Brennans felt Surviving Stress was due for an update beginning in 2017, they again turned to Mercer to complete the multi-year renovation project. Mercer, who had earned the trust of the Brennans over the years, was given free rein to transform Surviving Stress’ interior from a cutesy cottage theme into a sophisticated coastal look that could be ripped from the pages of “Coastal Living” magazine. Mercer says she took her inspiration from the floor to ceiling windows in the home’s living area. The ocean needed to be the focal point of everything.

To accomplish this Mercer chose more subtle tones in which to ground her design, beginning with a fresh coat of Sherwin Williams Sea Salt paint throughout the entire living area. She picked earth tones for the furniture in the great room, switching out two red chairs with new Rowe slipcovered pieces. Knowing that Surviving Stress is a vacation home that rents year-round, Mercer chose a flax-colored Crypton fabric when reupholstering the sectional sofa. The choice was also one that supports North Carolina manufacturing, as the stain resistance fabric is made in Kings Mountain. Tim and the couple’s oldest son,

HOMESTYLE Michael, rolled up their sleeves and installed a weathered white shiplap along the great room’s east wall, adding both dimension and texture. Connie found the perfect piece of artwork at the local Coastal Cottage Shoppe to serve as a focal point on the wall - a painting of a blue crab on a vintage windowpane. Painted by a local artist, the window formerly was part of a school building in Winnabow, NC. Not wanting the entire design to be composed completely of neutrals, Mercer brought in pops of coral with the Surya Fallon flatweave rug and splashes of navy in the designer throw pillows. This color combo is carried seamlessly into the dining area, where an Amish-made dining room table sits atop a Safavieh navy-and-white stripped rug. The dining room’s hutch, which had formerly held seashells and other coastal knickknacks, was returned to

its original function and now displays the home’s table settings. A distressed teal sideboard by Flagler replaced the former console table to complete the look. But perhaps nowhere is the transformation more apparent than in Surviving Stress’ bedrooms. One oceanfront bedroom on the second level transformed from a room bursting with red and gold paisley to a calming oasis of soft blues and yellows, with patterns restrained to the designer Kravit fabric Mercer used when creating the Euro shams and throw. A trio of pillows with embroidered yellow coral outlines set against white backgrounds is a subtle nod to the beauty that awaits visitors just through the door to the south facing deck. The three bunkrooms traded a shabby chic look for a more sophisticated yet playful design. Pint-sized guests (and those young at heart) can choose

HOMESTYLE between a grey, pink and teal room fit for a mermaid; a sage green, teal and chocolate room made for turtle lovers; or an indigo, ecru and aqua room perfect for the intrepid explorer. Every detail, from the café curtains that add privacy while letting in natural light to the Katy Mercer original paintings sprinkled throughout the home, has been carefully planned and executed so guests feel at ease and a bit pampered on setting foot in the home. Our recommendation after arriving - head straight for the second floor balcony, grab a glass of chilled white wine, settle into a settee and gaze out onto the million dollar views. You’ve arrived at Surviving Stress. For more information on this vacation rental or to book your next stay at Surviving Stress call 910.278.6011 or visit RentalsAtTheBeach.com.
