Brunswick County Booms Brunswick County is the place to go. BY LISA STITES
I
t seems that once again, southeastern North Carolina’s secret is out, and Brunswick County is growing. In fact, a recent report from the U.S. Census Bureau again named Brunswick County the fastest growing county in the state. Since the 2000 census, Brunswick County’s population has grown from 73,121 to 130,897 by 2017, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. And that number is still climbing as new houses continue to pop up all over the county. It’s reminiscent of the building boom seen in the mid-2000s, with commercial and residential development keeping pace with the influx of new residents. This explosion of development is hard to miss, especially in the north end of the county.
LELAND
Several new developments and businesses have sprouted up in Leland, mostly along U.S. 17, but some along Village Road as well. The area is seeing new development in established communities, such as Brunswick Forest, Magnolia Greens and Waterford, and new communities as well. Town of Leland’s Economic and Community Development Director Gary Vidmar gave a breakdown of the development going on in Leland. — Harrington Village: A $45 million mixed-use development on Village Road which will have 13 buildings with 300 apartments and 30,000 square feet of retail/commercial space. It’s scheduled to be completed in two years. — Leland Town Center: A 63-acre regional shopping center with more than 250,000 square feet of retail stores, restaurants and offices planned on U.S. 17 between Ploof Road and Ocean Gate Way. An Aldi grocery store opened here in December 2017, and a Chick-fil-A is coming this year too. — Waterford Commercial Village: Two new 9,000-square foot retail buildings were completed in 2017. One building is already fully occupied, including national chain restaurant Panera Bread. Construction will also begin soon on a 120-unit luxury apartment community.
— Magnolia Greens: Wilmington television station WWAY recently began broadcasting from its new Leland studios. A 20,000-square foot medical office building is also under construction for Wilmington Health. — Brunswick Forest: Shuckin Shack recently opened in a new retail/office building. EmergeOrtho plans to construct a 55,000-square foot medical office later this year. Construction will also begin this year on a senior living community which will include independent senior living, assisted living and skilled nursing care. New businesses in Westgate, the retail buildings in front of Walmart, include a mix of national and locally-owned establishments. Wilmington restaurants Cape Fear Seafood and Charlie Graingers, Fat Tony’s and The Joyce (called Slainte in Wilmington and Southport) have also opened locations in Leland, catering to the growing population. Vidmar said that these are just the highlights, and that much more is coming. The Town has economic development information on its website, townofleland.com, and has created a video highlighting the recent and planned development happening in town. The economic development effort in Leland includes working with developers and property owners to help them bring desirable businesses to town. “We provide guidance to help them prepare conceptual plans that meet the Town’s ordinances. We steer new businesses to suitable and affordable locations,” Vidmar said. The Economic Development Committee is working to create a Merchant’s Association, which will be new resource for the business community. The Committee is also reaching out to business in the Leland Industrial Park. Although the Park is not in the Town limits, Vidmar said many of the employees working for these
companies live, shop and dine in Leland and “deserve our support.” The Town is also currently surveying busi-
ness owners about the business climate in the area. Approximately 40 surveys had been returned by early May. Vidmar said they hope to learn how businesses are doing, why they chose Leland, if they’re satis-

CURRENTS fied with the Town government’s service or if there is something Town staff can do better, if they plan to expand their business in the next three years and if they’re able to find qualified employees. It’s the second such survey the town has done. Leland’s population has seen steady increases over the past five years averaging about 5% per year, or about 1,000 residents/year, Vidmar said. The current population is approximately 20,000.
SOUTHPORT AND OAK ISLAND Growth is not limited to the north end of the county, as Southport and Oak Island are also seeing increases in commercial and residential development. There are also plans for a 139-acre development, called St. James Center, adjacent to the St. James Town Hall and Community Center building. Plans at this point include more than 1,900 units, residential and commercial. Karen Sphar, Executive Vice President of the Southport-Oak Island Chamber of Commerce, attributes the upswing in building to a number of factors. “New residents, predominately retirees, are attracted to the beauty of the area, quality of our healthcare system, friendliness of its people and a low cost of living,” Sphar said. “The combination of year-round residents, a healthy vacation industry and population growth is the main attraction for business investment in our community.” Sphar said that there are new businesses opening in the area, as well as expansions of existing businesses. And while major chain establishments have begun to take notice of Leland, in the Southport and Oak Island areas, Sphar said many of the businesses are independent, or locally-owned
and operated franchises. There are approximately 500 members of the Chamber, including businesses and non-profit groups. “The more corporate owned chain development has exploded in the North Brunswick area of the county with an aggressive outreach campaign which is capitalizing on new residential housing growth and workforce potential due to its proximity to Wilmington,” Sphar said. “The cost of commercial property, available workforce, affordable housing for the workforce and funding for an aggressive outreach campaign is the biggest challenge to commercial growth and expansion in the Southport-Oak Island area.” Once known predominantly as a quaint fishing village with boundaries tied to proximity to the waterfront, the City of Southport is also expanding. Through voluntary annexation, the city took in the River Mist subdivision on N.C. 211, and the adjacent commercial development there. There’s already a Bojangles’ Famous Chicken ‘n Biscuits, Check 6 Brewery and Jersey Mike’s Subs, and plans for a new Wendy’s have been announced. Southport’s city limits also include the site of the new Lowes grocery store shopping center, on the north side of N.C. 211, adjacent to the Long Beach Road SE (the new extension of Long Beach Road). This 88-acre development, called Southport Crossing, is planned to include more than 40 single-family homes and 16 attached residences, a gas station, eight outparcels and a dozen strip mall spaces in addition to the grocery store. New home construction continues in Southport too, with 71 new homes last year and 16 permits in the first quarter of 2018, according to city staff. In the Town of Oak Island, the numbers for new housing starts is even greater. In the first four months of 2018, there were
124 new single-family resident permits issued, according to a building report compiled by Town staff. The Lowes Foods store at the intersection of Midway Road, Middleton Boulevard and N.C. 211 is in the town limits, as are the other three corners there. The Lowes Foods shopping center includes Pet Supplies Plus, Wok & Roll, Falcons & D’s, Mermaid Cove, Waterway Farmer, dental offices and a paint supplier. Pine Forest Plantation, east of the intersection of Midway Road and N.C. 211, has also started its first phases. Pine Forest of Oak Island will feature an integrated healthcare campus with residential living, recreation, shopping, and dining on more than 2,000 acres, according to the developer’s website. Plans for the healthcare campus include skilled-nursing, assisted-living, memory-care and acute-healthcare facilities with integrated family and senior medicine, occupational and phys-

ical therapists, in-home healthcare and medical equipment providers, as well as complete wellness facilities and personal services establishments. Novant medical offices opened for patients last fall, and the first phase of new homes will soon be underway. And a much-anticipated Publix grocery store has plans to build on the island. There are other large tracts in the Town limits on the mainland as well, though plans for development on those properties have not been announced. Whether the number of residents is driving business growth, if the new businesses are a draw for new residents, or if the two are feeding each other, one thing is clear — with all of this commercial and residential development in the works and on the drawing board, Brunswick County looks well placed to maintain its status as the fastest growing county in North Carolina.

9/11 Never Forget
The 35th Annual Firefighter’s Freedom Competition brings a memorial exhibition to town.

The 9/11 Memorial Exhibition is coming to Southport, a display of Twin Towe artifacts and firefighters from NYFD to talk about their experience. This is a historic exhibition full of tears, memories and accounts of the brave heroes that we will never forget.
The opening ceremony of the 35th Fire Fighter’s Freedom Competition is on Saturday, June 30 at 10 am. This year the 9/11 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit will be on display June 30 & July 01 at the competition location from 9 am – 3 pm. The
exhibit is over 100 square feet of actual artifacts from the Twin Towers terrorist attack. It comes with 2 members of the FDNY, that were on scene during the attacks to guide visitors through the exhibit and answer questions.

Artists workshop creates unique sculptures STORY & PHOTOS BY CARLA EDSTROM
O
n April 13th through the 15th, 2018 several local potters, including myself, embarked on a fun and somewhat scary voyage into the abysses of our souls to find what is angry and important and put it into our art. The Dreams and Journeys workshop at the Southport campus of Brunswick Community College on Lord Street took us there with potter Jim McDowell, aka The Black Potter, as our teacher and guide. A North Carolina artist who resides near Asheville, McDowell has gained critical acclaim for his spirit “ugly� face jugs that depict his African heritage as a descendent of slaves. His spirit jugs can be found all over the country including galleries in New York City. Being extremely interested in pottery folk art history of the south, I was excited to be a part of this workshop.
As artists, we go to workshops to learn something different and fresh, and then hopefully put some part of what we learned into our art. Being a potter who enjoys making ugly face jugs already, I was
looking for something to stretch my creativity a bit and to give extra meaning to my work. It turns out that this workshop was more than that to me. With this being such a heavy topic, I was pleasantly sur-

ART BEAT prised at how positive and fun it was. McDowell often started singing gospel songs and spirituals while we worked which was really refreshing. He explained about how he goes about making a jug and going into the dark abyss inside himself. “I make face jugs that reflect the anger that I feel. I have to channel the anger in my life. I invite the ancestors to come and attend us, because we are going to step into some areas that maybe people don’t want to go into,” explained McDowell. “But I stay in these areas because I want to remember. You must allow the jug to speak to you.” McDowell’s interest in face jugs started years before as a young boy while attending a funeral of a loved one. “I found myself intrigued by a conversation between my father and some elder family members. They were talking about something called face jugs and how they related to our family history,” he explained. “This is the African-American face-jug oral history as it was passed down in my family, the McDowell-Poston family. My father, James T. McDowell, Sr., told me the story as he received it from his father, Boyce McDowell, who was a tombstone maker in Gaffney, South Carolina, and he got it from his father, my great-grandfather who lived during slavery times.” “Slaves were not allowed to have tombstones, so sometimes pottery or even a face jug served as their grave markers,” said McDowell. Not unlike many artists throughout history, his work is often a political statement. Such is the case of his two-sided face jug of Emmitt Till, whose story is well known in the South. Till was a 14-year-old African-American boy from the South Side of Chicago who was visiting Mississippi in 1955. After he was accused of whistling at a white woman on the street, he was beaten, shot, and thrown into a river. One side of the jug is the beautiful boy before he was beaten and the other is the depiction of the horrible beating, mutilation and death this boy suffered. The story is depicted through McDowell in the art of the face jug. This ugly part of our history as a country should be seen and remembered so we never go back to that again. The history of face jugs goes back generations in the South. “With this workshop, we wanted to have a great time, acquire new skill in our craft, and come away with fresh personal insights in the process”, said Barbara McFall, Director of the Brunswick Community College Southport Center Campus. “We chose the African-American Spirit Jug as the vehicle for our journey. In African-American oral history, “ugly” face jugs in the Americas derived from African ritual figures believed to store spiritual energy used to aid or harm. As the tradition

evolved, enslaved people in NC, SC and GA crafted spirit jugs to place along with personal items on their loved ones’ graves. First noted among enslaved potters in Edgefield, SC in the mid-1800’s, these jugs are considered among the first truly American craft pieces. The genre celebrates a timeless theme of self-identification.” McDowell taught me to look inside my soul, and see how I got where I am today. And he also taught us how to take the bad from our lives and put it in clay as a way to acknowledge it and release it. He had us write a phrase on our jugs to describe what we found in our abyss. Some participants expressed how drugs have affected their life or physical abuses or going through difficult marriages. I ended up smashing down the last one I made so it looked like it flopped. I named it Knocked the Wind out of Me. For me it represents how careless the words of others have hurt me in my life and knocked me down. I found this to be very therapeutic and can’t wait to start creating using his methods soon. McFall could not have been happier with the outcome of the workshop. “Dreams
and Journeys Workshop sought to explore current cultural truths through the prism of historical art forms,” she said. “More specifically, a variety of cultural frictions in the news had raised the question of how the dreams and journeys of Brunswick County’s early settlers shaped the perceptions that define our area today, and how those perceptions continue to be expressed in our daily lives and shared through our arts, crafts and culture.” The North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural & Cultural Resources, supported the workshop. One requirement of projects funded through the Grassroots Grant program is that minority populations receive full consideration. BCC Southport Center hopes to hold many more workshops like this in the future. Artists rely on workshops such as this to refresh their art, learn something new and work closely with other artists. Having workshops available in our home studio so we don’t have to travel is a valuable tool to our growth and success. “Jim McDowell was upbeat, energetic, passionate about his topic and very good at his craft. Take a ride in history in the B-17G STORY BY KASS FINCHER
A
Coming to the Cape Fear Regional Jetport this month is an exciting attraction for aviation enthusiasts. The Aluminum Overcast – a World War II B-17 bomber – will be here June 8-10, with ground tours and air tours – weather permitting – available to the general public each day. Reservations are encouraged for the air tours, since each 20-minute tour only takes ten people at a time.
The airplane was built in 1945, too late to see European combat, but it has been restored completely and continues to fly to various airports around the country to offer tours and educational opportunities through its owner – the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA). This visit will be the fourth for the bomber here, the last being in 2015. When it first arrived here a few years before that, they flew 125 people on it. With the goal being 75 riders per city stop, our little community outperformed the rest of the country that first year, ranking first in air tour participants. Rich Largent, local chapter president for the EAA, describes how the airplane tours benefit his chapter and our community. “Our goal here is to promote flying, promote aviation and get the community involved,” he relates. “The air tours are a great way to get people to come out to the airport and learn about all that’s offered here. Our local proceeds from the air tours, pancake breakfast and all other fundraisers are to sponsor a young person to go to the one-week Air Academy that EAA sponsors in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. We’ve sent someone every year for the last eight years. It’s around $1500 to attend. Oftentimes we have worked with the Civil Air Patrol here to sponsor one of their Cadets.” The local chapter’s commitment to young people is also reflected in their Young Eagles program. Unlike some other chapters, who might focus on building experimental aircraft (where the EAA got started) or restoring “warbirds”or antique aircraft, the chapter here is interested in helping young people learn about aviation and perhaps become pilots themselves. Largent describes the initiative’s inception. “The Young Eagles program was
started in 1992,” he says. “One of our members – the late Robert Swanson – was in on the very beginning of this national program. We got involved about six years ago. EAA members realized that often we would go out, fly around, dust off the rust as we say, fly around the pattern a little bit, and it was just one person in the airplane. So folks got together and asked how we could get young people involved in flying, and that’s where the Young Eagles came in. “Pilots volunteered their services – their time, their airplane, their money, to take youngsters between the ages of 8 and 17 up on a 15-minute orientation flight. The goal in 1992 for the national organization was to see if we could fly one million youngsters by 2003. By October 2003 we hit the million mark. At that point there was some question if we should continue the program since we had hit the goal, but we decided yes, of course! The Young Eagles had become the single most important initiative the EAA had ever started.” As of today, about 2.2 million kids have flown in the program. The local chapter has eight pilots in the program, and they work with Kiwanis’ Big Toy Day and other community events to offer Young Eagles flying opportunities. Do the children grow up to pursue an aviation career? Due to privacy laws, that is difficult to determine, but EAA estimates perhaps 18,000 of the two million Young Eagles participants have become licensed pilots. It’s likely that many of those youngsters became fascinated with aviation at an early age, perhaps studying aircraft like the B-17 bombers. Used primarily in Europe during WWII, these airplanes were the most advanced of all U.S. aircraft. The Eighth Air Force flew hundreds of them from bases
in England deep into German territory, often without fighter escorts. The B-17G, the Aluminum Overcast model, had 13 machine guns and a formidable design that could withstand heavy artillery damage and still get its crews home. But of course not all made it back. Of the 12,000 B-17s produced for the war, over 4,700 were lost during combat missions. Today only 12 of these remarkable airplanes can still fly. It’s not by happenstance, Largent explains. “It costs a lot to maintain these airplanes. The people that fly this airplane, the people that come to sell the tickets, the mechanics, they’re all volunteers,” he says. “Their room and board are paid on the tours, but the rest is a labor of love.” One last personal note. My father was an army lieutenant who flew on a B-17 in WWII as a bombardier and navigator. He sat in the nose of the airplane, where enemy fighters flew right at them; the phrase “12 o’clock high”was literally coined to describe those fighter positions. On his 19th mission, he and his crew were shot down over what is now part of Poland. They were imprisoned in the stalag at Zagan where the Great Escape took place. He had been an airman for only six months; he was a POW for 18 months. At the end of the European war, Patton liberated his prison camp and my father was sent home, only to be reassigned to Japan. Thanks to Truman’s ending the war, he did not end up having to go there. Given my dad’s experience, it’s no surprise I have a special sentiment for the B-17 Flying Fortress. When the Aluminum Overcast arrives, I hope to fly on her, sitting right in the nose, where I’m sure many a young airman like my father fought and prayed for a safe return.

Craft can beers really hit the spot when heading to the beach. STORY AND PHOTO BY JEFF STITES
S
o you want to head to the beach but that “No Glass” sign is making you think you’ll be sentenced to an afternoon drinking Natural Light? Never fear, beach beer doesn’t have to be lousy anymore! Craft brewers are discovering that cans are not only more cost efficient than bottles, they preserve a beer’s breweryfresh flavor much better and longer than glass.
Beer’s enemies are time, sunlight and heat (and sometimes Southern Baptists). Any beer allowed to get too hot for too long will begin to taste “skunky.” All beers also change flavor over time, though in some varieties this is a good thing. But no beer can stand up to sunlight’s ultraviolet rays, and though brown glass does a decent job of keeping out the sun, it’s entirely dark and beer-friendly inside of a can. Today’s cans are aluminum, making them easily recycled, and they are coated to prevent any metallic taste from entering the beer. Canned beer is all the rage now, and for us here at the beach, this is a great thing. Here are a few of my favorite beachfriendly brews, and a couple new ones I tried just for you. Rail Walk Caramel Coconut Cream Ale 6% ABV 15 IBU The Label Says: A light creamy body with sweet caramel coconut taste and a delicate, tropical aroma. My Take: I have a soft spot for cream ales, and, come to think of it, for coconuts, so I’m pretty pleased with this beer. The label claims a “tropical aroma” and if suntan lotion and beer screams “tropical!” to you, this fits the bill. I will say it definitely smells beachy. And it tastes beachy, too, if that makes sense. It’s very coconutty, but also quite beer-y. I don’t think a regular beer would have worked with this quite as well as the cream ale does. The extra body makes it sort of, if you use your imagination a lot, kind of pina colada-ish. It has more density than your average beer, and even if I’m sitting in the hot sun, I think that works quite well for me. And this is brewed in Salisbury, so hooray for local beer! Funky Buddha Pineapple Beach 5% ABV 20 IBU The Label Says: Blonde Ale with pineapple added My Take: This one is just as
pineapple-y as the last one was coconutty, but it doesn’t work quite as well. It isn’t bad at all, but I think it could be better if the pineapple were paired with a stronger beer. This one is not quite fruity enough to be a shandy, but too fruity not to be, if you get my meaning. It is very refreshing, though, so maybe sitting on the beach in the middle of July, this would hit the spot. I’m going to try that and find out. Dos Equis Lager Especial 4.2% ABV 10 IBU My Take: This is about the most traditional beach beer I’ll be looking at this month. It’s just a simple, but delicious, lager beer. Don’t get it confused with its better advertised fellow Mexican brew, Corona. This one is much, much, much better. Dos Equis (Spanish for Two X) may have a hard to pronounce Spanish name and the brewery may be named after none other than Montezuma himself, but this is really a German beer. The fellow who started the brewery in 1897 had just emigrated from Bavaria to Mexico and since beer was what he knew, beer was what he did. And he did it well, keeping it fresh and light, but with just enough hops and malt notes to let you know you’re drinking a beer. For the beach, that’s a pretty sure-fire recipe for success. Oskar Blues Brewery Dales Pale Ale 6.5% ABV 65 IBU The Label Says: A Huge Voluminously Hopped Mutha of a Pale Ale, The Original Craft Beer In A Can My Take: First of all, props to the Oskar Blues people for using the word “voluminously” on a can of beer. Oskar Blues began canning beer at their microbrewery in Colorado in 2002 and expanded with a second brewery in Brevard, NC in 2012, so here’s another local brew! Dale’s Pale Ale is very hoppy, but not so bitter as to make it barely drinkable. In
fact, it’s quite a refresher. The hops varieties used are more of the piney variety, so it has a bit of a West Coast feel to it, which is cool because we can get it from right around the corner (basically) and have very fresh, West Coast IPAish beer. On the East Coast. On the beach. Hooray us! Blue Moon Belgian White 5.4% ABV 9 IBU My Take: Blue Moon gets a bad rap, I think, from craft beer fans. They find out it’s made by Coors Brewing and so it isn’t truly a “craft beer,” they say. But I submit that if you poured Blue Moon into a bottle with a funky label and claimed it was from some town no one had ever heard of, those same craft beer fans would applaud it. Blue Moon is simply a very good beer. There is no rule or law of brewing that says the more of a recipe you make, the worse it tastes. This beer hits the right balance of malt and citrus flavors. It keeps it light while also delivering robust flavors. And it’s one of the best beers to drink on a hot summer day. Period. Plus, they’ve perfected the can by making it a pint and giving it a screw top. Cigar City Jai Alai India Pale Ale 7.5% ABV 70 IBU The Label Says: The merry game of jai alai provides inspiration for this citrus-forward India Pale Ale with notes of clementine, orange peel and caramel malt creating an IPA that’s both bold and approachable. My Take: I saved my favorite for last. The Cigar City folks are based in Tampa, but brew beer for distribution in our area at the Oskar Blues brewery in Brevard, so again, hooray local beer! Jai Alai is every bit as hoppy as Dales, but these hops impart an entirely different flavor. Instead of the piney notes of Dales, Jai Alai’s hops are very citrusy. There is no actual fruit in here, no

pineapple or orange at all, but the hops make you think there may be. It goes down smooth and leaves you refreshed and, with 7.5% alcohol by volume, happy. This is by far my favorite beach beer, and as long as you can walk home or have someone else drive you (because it’ll sneak up on you), I highly recommend you give it a try.

hey say nature is healing... it connects us to the Earth. Well I hope you go exploring as much as this Southport Company does. The Adventure Kayak Company loves to venture out into the local water ways, explore historic Southport and all over the coastal region. If you want a day of fun, book a tour, you’ll be glad you did. Here are some fun questions about Adventure Kayak that I bet you didn’t know....
1 - Tell us a little about how The Adventure Kayak Company got started.
In April 2000 taking a leap of faith, I begin my adventure journey starting The Adventure Kayak Company. The main goal was to share with others what I love, being outside, on the water and experiencing nature. The Adventure Kayak Company started out as a kayak tour company, renting space from Foster’s Market on West West St., leading kayak tours in the local salt marsh creeks and black water rivers. Within the first season adding kayak and bicycle rentals, kayak lessons and Historical Southport Bicycle tours. Six years later I decided to take the tour/rental business to the next phase and moved The Adventure Kayak Company to 807 N. Howe St. adding a retail shop selling kayaks, stand up paddle boards and all the gear needed

2 - What can someone expect to experience on a kayak tour? We always start with basic kayak instruction before going out on the water. So,
no experience necessary to join one of our local 2 hour guided kayak tours. We focus on introducing kayaking through awesome nature experience. Our amazing guides are knowledgeable about the local history and our unique coastal environment. We offer daily kayak tours in the local salt marsh creeks, exploring the vibrant eco-system with a big variety of coastal birds, paddling to barrier islands and on peaceful gentle black water rivers with huge old Cypress growth. Sunset and full moon paddles are also a part of our paddling schedule. We ask our customer to wear shoes that can get wet and protect their feet, bring water to drink, wear hats, sun glasses, sun screen and be ready to have lots of fun on the water!
3 - Who is your typical customer for the tour? (age range)
Our minimum age requirement is 5 years old for a guided kayak tour and no there’s no maximum age requirement. Our moto is you’re never too old to experience kay-
aking. Participants age range from 5-95 have enjoyed our kayak outings. We have provided kayak outing for wedding parties, birthday celebrations, scout troops, youth groups, school groups, corporate team building outings, wounded warriors and military family outings and more.
4 - I notice you also do historic Southport bicycle tours... tell us more.
The Historical Southport bicycle tours begin our first season in 2000 with an enthusiastic guide ready to share the local history and a fleet of bicycles. A few years ago we decided to collaborate with the NC Maritime Museum at Southport offering monthly tours with a portion of participants fee donated to the Maritime Museum. Tours can be added to the schedule by request and with the minimum age of 13 years old to participate. Our bicycles are single speed, the pace is slow and easy traveling approximately a

5 - You have a retail shop there, what is your most popular seller? (and tell us a little about what you offer)
Recreational kayaks both sit in side and sit on top are our top sellers. We stock Hurricane Aqua Sport kayaks made in Warsaw, NC, Perception kayaks from Greenville, SC and Invert Stand Up Paddle Boards also from Greenville, SC. We also carry roof racks, paddles, life jackets and other accessories items and gear for kayaks and SUPs. We strive to help our customers find the right boat and gear that will meet their paddling desires by offering the opportunity to demo kayaks. It’s really important to try before you buy.
6 - Is there an exciting story (or adventure) that happened on a kayak tour or bike tour? (One that stands out)
I am truly blessed to Do What I love and Love What I do and have an amazing staff that have helped to make my dream come true. The opportunity over 18 years has been abundant to meeting so many wonderful people from all over the world during our
tours and in the shop. I would have to say more than exciting or adventurous, what stands out to me is more of an humbling experience to hear comments from Wounded Warriors on the sense of peace they feel by being out on the water. Or a group of young folks from an afterschool program or group home who expressed they have never been in a place so beautiful and calming. When you hear comments like that you know you are helping to provide more than just a kayak outing, the opportunity to really experience nature by kayaking.
7 - Kayaking seems to be physically demanding...do you have “easy” tours for people with limited upper body strength? (elderly or young?)
It’s all about technique. You really don’t have to have strong upper body strength. A good paddle stoke, proper body posture and balance will get you on your way. Our guides lead basic instruction with every tour and continue to give pointers if needed along the way. We also offer kayak lessons for all age groups and skill levels from beginner to advance. Our lessons are for anyone that wants build a good paddling foundation or improve and sharpen their existing skills. If you ever wondered what to do if you

8 - Do you ever encounter interesting wildlife? (alligators, snakes, birds, etc..) ALT- What kind of wildlife can someone expect to encounter?
Nature is so cool and unpredictable. You never know what you might be privileged to see. Each tour provides something uniquely different. Our on water protocol is to observe any wildlife (bird, turtle, dolphin and sometimes we are lucky to see an alligator) from a distance and let the wildlife do their thing. We’re the visitors coming to their home and want to give them plenty of respect and space. Last season there were a couple of black bear sightings, a few beavers slapping their tails on the water and a number of bald eagles circling overhead. Quite often we see barred owls, osprey and a variety of warblers. Both the local salt marsh creeks and black water rivers provide incredible birding opportunities. We have had a few unusual wildlife encounters during a kayak tour, once a large sea turtle came up for a breath right be-
side one of the kayakers, another tour a dolphin jumped over the bow of a kayak. I remember on a salt marsh creek tour a huge ray coming out of the water in front of the group spreading out like a blanket at least 10ft wide. Now that was a sight! 9 - Is every tour different? Do you explore different areas each time? We provided daily kayak tours in different locations at set times to coincide with the daily tidal chance. One morning we might be out on a salt marsh creek with lots of birding opportunities and the next day on a fresh water river with Cypress trees that could be between 300-800 years old. During the Spring and Fall we offer tours throughout the day. During the summer months late June, July and August we like to start out early in the morning avoiding the heat of the day and more opportunity to see wildlife. There are so many incredible place to paddle in our immediate area and within a short drive. This is truly a paddler’s paradise! 10 - What is new this season for Adventure Kayak - or do you have any exciting plans for the future you’d like to tell us about? What is the best adventure you’ve ever been on?
Wow that’s a tuff one to answer. I’ve been very fortunate to have had many great adventures locally and abroad. Paddling around Milos Island in Greece with a group of wonderful folks on my birthday and kayak camping on Coiba Island Panama are two of my top adventures so far. I think the best is yet to come!
What is your favorite adventure film or book?
I find it inspiring to read about amazing adventures individuals choose to experience. Sharing their journey, the challenges they faced and their growth along the way. “On Celtic Tides” by Chris Duff, “Paddling North” by Audrey Sutherland and the “Sailing Promise” by Alayne Main are a few of my favorite adventure books

Delicious food and friendly atmosphere at the new Blue Cow Grille in Southport STORY BY KASS FINCHER
W
hen John and Sheila Barbee met 38 years ago at the once-popular Southport seafood restaurant on the river – Port Charlie’s – they shared a common love for the industry. Managing the restaurant from 1990-1995, they envisioned someday buying their own place. So when the little building on Brown Street became available in 1996, they made the leap, and what is now Dry Street Pub and Pizza was born. Now, 22 years later, Dry Street Pub is a local favorite, and the couple has built on their success by opening a second restaurant downtown this past April – the Blue Cow Grille on Moore Street. The Grille is another labor of love, actually a long-time goal for John in particular. Sheila describes John’s idea for the restaurant. “He always wanted a
burger place,” she relates. “I said John, tell me why you are naming it Blue Cow. I don’t know why – he just came up with that name.” And they went with it – their daughter designed the logo; a friend created the stained glass art above the front door. Their restaurants are a family affair. Son Michael runs the kitchen at Dry

Street. Daughter Grace is finishing up at Appalachian State. Daughter Sarah is a junior in high school who will help out front this summer at Blue Cow. But the decision to open Blue Cow Grille was not a slam-dunk in the beginning. “When this space became available,” Sheila says, “we came and looked at it. At first, we said no way, it’s just too
small. But we got several quotes on renovation, and decided to go ahead with it. The whole renovation started in October 2017 and it took awhile. We exposed the brick on one wall, opened up the ceiling (it was a dropped ceiling before), put in all new storefront windows and a new door to let more light in. Less than 1000 square feet in to-

SAVOR tal, the renovations made the space feel much more open. “Once we gutted it, it made a big difference,” says Sheila. “That’s the original ceiling – they didn’t have to do much to it once it was exposed. They left the original paint, just sanded and sealed it.” Starting out with a small staff of four and Sheila and John doing the cooking, the initial hours were 11 a.m.-3 p.m. The Barbees hope to go to 11 a.m.-8 p.m. like Dry Street Pub, but Sheila says they need more cooks to do that. Speaking about how she and John work together, Sheila laughs. “It’s hard to believe – we’ve been together almost 30 years and we’ve worked together all that time too. We cook differently. He knows what goes with what. I’m just a country girl; I was raised in Charleston. I can do fried chicken, mac and cheese, seafood. So we complement each other – he will make a cheese sauce and I’ll do a chili.” They’re still experimenting a bit with the menu, but a few items already stand out. For starters, the chili cheese fries and wings are the most popular. Of the six burger options, the “Blue Cow”
The Blue Cow Burger...Blue Cheese, Bacon, Onions, Mayo, Lettuce & Tomato... the most popular! burger – with blue cheese, bacon, onions, mayo, lettuce and tomato – is by far number one. The “Dwight YOLKam” (a shoutout to country singer and actor Dwight Yoakam), made with bacon, fried egg, cheddar and mayo, is also a favorite. But the burgers are just part of the menu. Sheila makes the seafood
salads and sandwiches using local fresh catches from Royce Potter’s market. She also makes a unique veggie burger – the “Black Betty” – from black bean/quinoa cake, chipotle mayo, cheddar, arugula, tomato and salsa verde on brioche. The “Big Tasty” is a slow cooked brisket, bacon cheddar, onion, arugula, salsa verde and chipotle mayo sandwich on a sub roll. And the “Henny Penny” – a chicken breast sandwich – rounds out the menu favorites. No doubt the Barbees’ experience with the restaurant business bodes success for the Blue Cow Grille. But as many restaurateurs would agree, challenges remain in areas such as staffing. “Help, we need help,” Sheila says. We need to find cooks so we can stay open later. That’s one reason John and I were successful at Dry Street. For years, it was just us in the kitchen; we did it all. But that’s when I was 30 years old. Now, if I could just find a couple more cooks, I’d be, as they say, ‘nanacakes.’” We think that word means “happy,” or, more probably, “ecstatic.” If you’re a cook, go see Sheila. If you’re a burger

f only Gilbert and Sullivan could see us now. Based on Gilbert and Sullivan’s operetta, “The Mikado,” “The Hot Mikado” is a musical comedy adapted by Richard Bell and Rob Bowen
Brunswick Little Theatre is proud to present The Hot Mikado, directed and choreographed by Cal Chiang with musical direction by Michael Stringer. This production is set in a Japanese garden and costumed in a combination of traditional and contemporary Japanese design. The score includes much of Sullivan’s original music but is re-orchestrated using musical harmonies and arrangements of the 1940s with a wide range of styles including jazz, gospel, blues, rock, swing, and torch songs. Many of the songs in “The Hot Mi-
kado” have the same name and melody, but with a twist. The plot does not stray far from the original story line of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Mikado.” It is a story of love found, lost, found again, a jilted lover, a beheading, of being buried alive, a secret wedding and, of course, a happy ending. “The Hot Mikado” is a high-energy musical romp with hot harmonies, poppin’ dance, and a time-honored story line. A little history lesson & thanks to Mothers. STORY BY AMI BROWN

Last month I shared a brief history of how Mother’s Day began. Funny enough...Father’s Day was inspired by the official creation of Mother’s Day. I guess those dad’s wanted their special day too. I think I approve of that! According to History.com.. The nation’s first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in the state of Washington. However, it was not until 1972–58 years after President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day official–that the day honoring fathers became a nationwide holiday in the United States. Father’s Day is always on the second Sunday in June, in 2018 it occurs on Sunday, June 17. ORIGINS OF FATHER’S DAY The campaign to celebrate the nation’s fathers did not meet with the same enthusiasm–perhaps because, as one florist
explained, “fathers haven’t the same sentimental appeal that mothers have.” On July 5, 1908, a West Virginia church sponsored the nation’s first event explicitly in honor of fathers, a Sunday sermon in memory of the 362 men who had died in the previous December’s explosions at the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongah, but it was a one-time commemoration and not an annual holiday. The next year, a Spokane, Washington, woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, tried to establish an official equivalent to Mother’s Day for male parents. She went to lo-

Kitchen Summer Shrimp Boil Shrimp, Clams, Corn and Sausage, Steam Pots are easy for entertaining! STORY BY KRIS BEASLEY
S
ummertime, Summertime, Sum Sum, Summertime! Ah, at last, sweet Summertime! Back in April when we were still experiencing temps in the 30’s, I would day dream about warm summer days with my toes in the sand. We are so lucky to live at the beach! And as most of you know, summertime means lots of company and overnight guests, which can lead to cooking for a big crowd. One of my favorite go to’s, is a steam pot. It’s easy, it’s impressive and it’s always crowd pleaser. You can mix and match the ingredients. But over the years, this what I like the best. Please buy your seafood, fresh and local. Large Seafood Steam Pot or Large Stock Pot INGREDIENTS: • 12-24 dozen Local, Clams -rinsed and cleaned very well • 2-3 lbs Fresh, Local, Shrimp • 6 ears of fresh corn (broken into 2 or 3 pieces) • 4 cups of little redskin potatoes. If you cannot find the little ones, you can cut up the bigger ones • 2 pkgs of Smoked Sausage, sliced into 1 inch pieces • 1 head of Garlic (sliced in half, so you are cutting through all the pods) You do not have to peel. Leave skin on. • 1 onion (sliced in half) Do not peel, leave skin on. • 1 lemon (sliced in half) • 1-3 pkg Zatarains Seafood Boil (dry packet, not the bottle) Read the instructions and follow based on how many pounds of shrimp/seafood you are using. • 1-2 loaves of crusty french bread • Melted butter divided into small bowls • Old Bay • Cocktail Sauce • Forks • Paper Towels • Vinyl Table Cloth • Old Coffee Cans or Bowls INSTRUCTIONS Before I begin the boil. I set up a big picnic table with a vinyl table cloth. I put out little bowls of melted butter, forks and plenty of paper towels stationed around. I put little plates out for those that want to use cocktail sauce or Old Bay. Old coffee cans are great for discarded shells, you can use
big bowls, or a trash can near. Once the boil is done, I strain it and dump it out in the middle of the table. Everyone stands around and grabs what they want to eat. The bulbs of the garlic are soft and really yummy to spread out on a piece of the bread. And the onion pieces fall apart and are delicious with the sausage or a shrimp. Follow the instructions on the Zatarain’s Seafood Boil based on how many pounds of shrimp/seafood you are using. Add the garlic, onion, lemon, potatoes and smoked sausage. Bring to boil. Boil for 5 minutes (depending on the size of your potatoes, 10 min if potatoes are big). Add clams, and corn. Boil for 5 more minutes and keep boiling until the clams begin to open. As soon as that happens, put the shrimp in. Cover and turn off the heat. Slide off the burner if it is really, really hot. Let sit covered for 5 minutes. Lift lid and stir. If all the shrimp are pink, it’s done. Do not overcook. Place a big strainer or colander in the sink. Pour the boil out and drain off the liquid. Discard the seasoning packets. HOMESTYLE Low Country Charm This William Poole Designed home is a rare gem in Southport. STORY BY AMI BROWN

am and Karen (KJ) Johnston are two of the nicest people I have met in Southport. It seems fitting to showcase their home here, as it truly is a gem. Their lovely home on St. George Street was built in 2000, but fell in disrepair and they bought it, without ever stepping inside in 2008. They had peeked in the windows, but Sam knew it had “Good Bones”. Built by local builder, David Forsythe, Sam had obviously done his homework.

The Johnstons moved to Southport from Maryland back in 2008, so this has been their home for the past ten years. They love Southport and plan to stay..at least for now. When you enter the home, you can’t help but notice the “nautical” theme. Of course, they have a sailboat and Sam is the Commodore of the South-
port Yacht Club. Sam is also a builder of model boats. He doesn’t use kits, but does everything by hand. You also notice a lot of ducks... rare, hand carved and antique wooden ducks.. Although he is not a hunter, he loves to collect Chesapeake Bay working decoys, from master carvers. One really stand out feature is the two story vaulted ceilings in the living area and the humongous stone fireplace chimney. KJ says when they moved in, they bought nothing new... it feels homey and comfortable. Sam is a 6th generation family from Boone, NC, and he always planned to come back to NC. Since his job allows him to work anywhere, Southport is where they chose to live. KJ was an emergency room nurse, but recently co-bought her dream business.... The Wine Rack in Southport. It has just gone under a spectacular renovation inside and out, and is open and thriving. Both Sam and KJ agree that their favorite part of the house is BOTH the front and rear porches. They always have a sea breeze, have plenty of comfy furniture for lounging, reading, relaxing, or entertaining. The back yard was a jungle when they bought the place, overgrown and scary. KJ’s passion is gardening, they even call her the “Mulchin Mama”.

She has turned the back yard into a showcase. Stone paths, garden sculptures, little benches for quiet times, and enough space for the biggest of summer bbq’s. This three story home with 3000 square feet is a real gem here in

With over 100 ducks, I couldn’t show them all here. I thought I’d share some of the ones that Sam is most proud of. Some of his favorite are the Wood Ducks and the Morganzers. This White Swan is in the foyer on display and several others are in the living room. In Sam’s office space, he likes to surround himself with things that bring him joy. This includes an old train set he had since he was just a child, and of course more ducks.
