Art of Jim McIntosh Award-winning, local Artist Jim McIntosh’s painting was chosen for the cover this month in celebration of the Plein Air Festival. Here’s more about Jim. BIO: I was formally educated to teach Biology at the university level, which I did for 37 years. This included my Doctorate from Duke, Masters from UNC Chapel Hill and Oregon State Univ. and BS from Carson-Newman University and initially Mars Hill University when it was still a two year “junior college” with no art classes. My formal art training was informal with Dr. Oouten at Mars Hill in his Zoology Class. He was very particular about the drawing we had to do in Zoo lab every week. What we were studying had to be drawn in “photorealism”. Hours and hours of drawing every week for his approval enhanced my drawing abilities. Some 20 years later, I began to paint in watercolors and have continued since. As a painter for over 45 years, the education and experience has been varied and has resulted in a style that is unique for me. The years have seen a growth and maturation to a point where I am comfortable with my style. I have studied with several internationally known watercolorists including: William Lawrence, Chuck McLachlan, Christopher Schink, Joe Miller, and Sterling Edwards. I have taught watercolor painting classes and workshops over 30 years at Patrick Henry Community College, Virginia Tech and locally. Many awards have been received for my work at the local and regional level over 40 years. I have been fortunate to have had several one man shows at Patrick Henry Community College, Martinsville, Va. , Virginia Tech, Critz, VA, The Blue Dolphin Gallery in Southport, NC, and the NC Aquarium at Ft. Fisher, NC. Many public and cooperate organizations including, VF Corp, Virginia Tech, Patrick Henry Community College, NC Legislative Office Building display my paintings. They are also in private homes in many States and also Internationally. July 2012 opened a new fascinating aspect of my painting experience. As they were filming the movie, “Safe Haven”, an adaptation of the book by the same name by Nicholas Sparks in Southport, NC. I was able to gain access to the filming site and painted the set “Plein Air” for over a week while they were filming. During this time I was able to paint 15 originals of the set and as a result many of the crew, actors, directors, and producers now have original paintings of this work. It was an amazing experience to paint on location
and have the paintings bought by the film artist before they could dry. I have been concentrating on “Plein Air” painting for ten years painting in the impressionistic representational abstracts. Using large brushes with fewer strokes, I am able to interpret the shapes I want in my painting. Artistic Intent: As a painter and teacher, my goal is to show my students nearly a lifetime of experience in the attainment of personal expression. The hope is to inspire, direct and cultivate the “art spirit” within. All levels are welcome. All minds and hearts are required. The student must bring “desire”. Painting is closely related to life, to caring, to love. Responding to life around me, I try to say something about the things I care about, the things I am close to. Responding as a creature in God’s creation, I try to say something about the beauty, the meaning of life, with emotions and order that are all God given. My desire is to put on paper my feelings, intuition, and spirit of a subject. It is not to produce a copy of the subject but an impressionistic interpretation of what I see and feel. What I want is to communicate a feeling, something deeper than the surface. Art’s beauty lies in the artist’s expression, his arrangement. His mood is put into the subject. I may begin with an idea or a location or an emotion and look for an approach, a spark, a glance, a pose. I am looking for the spirit of the subject, through being there to feel, touch, see, taste and hear its identity. This is easiest when painting “Plein Air”. The painting will also be expressed in bright, intense and colorful chroma. Each painting becomes a happy experience for me and I hope it will make someone happy when they look at it…. Edgar Whitney: “We are not here to report the FACT of a thing, but to express the TRUTH of it in whatever language you choose.” ---translation, not transcription. ART BEAT within two blocks, then return to Doc Meridian for the opening night reception from 4-6 p.m. Organizers will be greeting participating plein air painters at the reception and showcasing their very own group of mega-talented artists, who have agreed to act as judges at the close of the festival. Cash bar, appetizers on the house, good conversation in the winery’s cozy courtyard, and jazz musician Dr. Ronnie Weinstein will accompany. Local artist Joseph Bardani will also be on hand to demonstrate the fine art of palette knife painting. Many local restaurants are offering plein air specials this weekend and artists are encouraged to set up their easels and paint the sunset from the deck of American Fish Company, a popular watering hole down at the Yacht Basin. The Wet Paint Sale judges will also be exhibiting their artwork at several locations around town, including the Wine Rack, the Frying Pan, Cafe Koa, Dry Street Pub & Pizza, and Silver Coast Winery. On Saturday, June 15, bring your appetite and your kids to Keziah Park at the corner of Lord and Moore streets. Joe Loves Lobster Rolls food truck will satisfy your taste buds all day while children of all ages exercise their painting passions from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. under the guiding hand of art teachers Jen McCarthy and Patty Webb, or test their inner Piccasso with 2nd Story Art & Music School owners, Ginger Hedblom and Laurie Russ. Live music in the Keziah Park gazebo is in the air all day. Also on Saturday afternoon, the city is hosting its 1st annual spring kitchen dessert tour, “Savor the Sweet Life in Southport.” Visitors and members of the Southport Historical Society will be strolling downtown streets nearby dressed in period costume to promote a “new” cookbook of recipes circulated at the turn of last century. The author of Hominy Muffins and Oyster Pie will autograph copies for sale next to Keziah Park when the tour ends. More information and tickets are available at https://www.southporthistoricalsociety. org/event/southports-1st-annual-springkitchen-tour/ When the plein air artists have wrapped up for the weekend, their freshly painted work will be on display at Keziah Park from 4-6 p.m. Come meet the painters during this Wet Paint Sale, discuss their techniques, and buy their art! You will be delighted to own some of the finest depictions of Southport landscapes and scenery available -- many of the plein
air artists have painted our town before and know precisely how to capture its charismatic charm. Don’t miss this opportunity –- you may get lucky and purchase an award winner! Artists receive 100% of the proceeds from the sale of their work. The Awards Ceremony starts at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, during the Wet Paint Sale. City of Southport Mayor Jerry Dove will share top billing with Jeremy Truett, our Master of Ceremonies and very own entertainment ambassador. Mayor Dove’s top pick among plein air painters will receive his famous Mayor’s Award, and Jeremy will introduce the distinguished group of artist judges, whose favorite choices will reflect their individual tastes. You will have the opportunity to do the same by voting for the winner of the People’s Choice Award. The ballot you cast may be for the very same painter whose work is featured at the 2020 Southport Plein Air Festival! The Up Your Arts Plein Air Committee was honored to have the support this year of local art legend Jim McIntosh, who graciously allowed us to feature his artwork in our festival literature. Jim has been instrumental to the success of this and previous plein air events in Southport and we look forward to doing him proud in years to come. Come out and enjoy all the events June 14-15 in Southport, celebrating art, music, and fun on another beautiful day in paradise!

HOW TO SEE SEA TURTLES?
Provided by Mariah Cox, BHI Communications Intern, courtesy of the Bald Head Island Conservancy. Sea Turtles begin to lay their nests on Bald Head Island in mid-May up until early-August. After a 45-70 day incubation period, the nests begin to hatch mid-July to late-September. The Bald Head Island Conservancy offers three different ways for you, your friends, and your family to view sea turtles throughout the different stages of their re-
productive life cycle. 1. Turtle Walks occur every night throughout the summer from 9:00PM to midnight. Turtle Walks are a great way to witness a mother sea turtle crawling up onto the beach, digging a hole for her nest, laying her eggs, camouflaging the nest with sand, and making her way back to the ocean. Later in the summer, we can expect to start seeing nests hatch, also known as a boil. Boils typically happen during the night time, which make Turtle Walks a prime time to catch a nest hatching! Turtle Walks are exclusively for members of the Bald Head Island Conservancy. To find out more about our memberships, please click here. 2. Beach Patrol Ride-alongs are another great way to explore the beaches at night and potentially seeing a mother laying her nest or spotting a boil! Unlike Turtle Walks, Beach Patrol Ride-alongs are open to everyone, non-members and members. Beach Patrol Ride-alongs provide a unique experience that allows up to a group of four to ride along with our Sea Turtle Interns patrolling the beaches at night. Participants get a firsthand glimpse into the lives of the Sea Turtles Interns and the tasks that go along with our Sea Turtle Protection Program. 3. Nest Excavations occur three days after a nest boils and are free and open to the public. Excavations provide a unique opportunity for attendees to witness hatchlings, that didn’t make it out of the nest during the boil, crawl to the ocean with the help of the Sea Turtle Interns and Conservancy Staff. The dates for the excavations will be posted here when nests start to hatch.
HOW CAN I HELP THE SEA TURTLES?
Stop by the Conservancy for some red cellophane to put over your flashlight. Turtles are disoriented by white light, but can’t see red light! Fill in holes on the beach and pack up your beach equipment. Turtles can easily fall into holes or run into your beach gear if left overnight.
Always remember your reusable shopping bags to help reduce the use of plastic. Participate in BHI Conservancy Programs - as a non-profit, all proceeds from programs go directly back to serving our mission of conservation, education, and preservation. • Adopt a sea turtle nest! • Attend our excavations! • Join the Sea Turtle Protection Program • Apply to become a Sea Turtle Intern • Visit our Job Openings page for available internship opportunities • Become a Nest Monitor • Email us at email@bhic.org or stop by the Barrier Island Study Center for more information • Adopt a Nest • Visit our Adopt-AProgram page for more information If you see a nesting or injured sea turtle on the beach, please call our Wildlife Emergency Hotline at 910-457-0089 x 5

FUN FACTS ABOUT SEA TURTLES
(from Defenders of wildife.org) Sea turtles are one of the Earth’s most ancient creatures. The seven species that can be found today have been around for 110 million years, since the time of the dinosaurs. The sea turtle’s shell, or “carapace” is streamlined for swimming through the water. Unlike other turtles, sea turtles cannot retract their legs and head into their shells. Their color varies between yellow, greenish and black depending on the species. DIET - What sea turtles eat depends on the subspecies, but some common items include jellyfish, seaweed, crabs, shrimp, sponges, snails, algae and mollusks. POPULATION - It is difficult to find population numbers for sea turtles because male and juvenile sea turtles do not return to shore once they hatch and reach the ocean, which makes it hard to keep track of them.

CURRENTS HOMINY MUFFINS AND OYSTER PIE
(Overview of the recipe book) This local history book includes nearly 100 historic Southport recipes and tells the life stories of 54 ladies who contributed their recipes to a 1907 church cookbook. Ruth Reichl, editor of The Modern Library Food Series, notes: “That to fully appreciate an historical cookbook, the challenge is not just to cook the recipes, but to read through the recipes to the lives behind them”. That is exactly what this book provides...a look at the lives behind the recipes. As a bonus, the book also includes each of the recipes in the original cookbook, which was published by the St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, Southport in 1907. Following the practice of that time, many of the ladies identified themselves by their husbands’ first name or initials. This reminded me of my grandmother who lived to be 99 years old. She outlived my grandfather by nearly 60 years, how-
ever she always gave her name as Mrs. Charles R. Struble. While I always respected this tradition, I often thought that peo-
ple should know her name (Beatrice Gay). I feel the same way about the ladies profiled in Hominy Muffins and Oyster Pie. The ladies of Southport, like my grandmother, are the grandmothers and mothers of the generation that we often call the “Greatest Generation.” By this fact alone these ladies deserve to be known and their stories told! Simple artifacts like cookbooks can tell us a lot about the history and ideas of the people who produced them. Recipes for hominy muffins and oyster pie are not a surprise in a North Carolina cookbook. However, I was surprised that the original cookbook was dated “Xmas 1907.” I think another surprise is the quote at the end of the original cookbook “The fish lead a pleasant life...they drink when they like.” I imagine that placing either reference in a church cookbook today would spark great concern and discussion.
SAMPLE PROFILES
Agnes Hughes Cravens. She was an Irish immigrant who went from living in a boarding house in Kansas City in 1900 to living two blocks from Central Park in NYC in 1925. In 1907, she lived in Southport with her husband, Lanier Cravens, who was stationed at Fort Caswell. While at Fort Caswell, First Lieutenant Cravens was court marshalled and found guilty of a payroll violation. In 1908, his sentence was commuted and his rank restored by President Theodore Roosevelt. Frances Price Davis. At the end of the War Between the States, a family story tells of Frances’ encounter with a Northern officer. When the officer came to the Price home looking for Frances’ older brother, young Frances bravely told the officer that her brother had done nothing wrong. She further suggested, in the politest manner possible, that the officer should kindly leave and not bother her brother again. Book available on Amazon and Barnes & Nobles as well.

Hot Competition!
Firefighters showcase strength and stamina STORY BY LISA STITES
O
ne of the earliest events of the North Carolina 4th of July Festival is also one of the favorites for children. Firefighters from near and far will again compete for bragging rights in the annual Firefighters Competition. Grab a seat on the bleachers or get up close, and maybe get splashed a little, to watch firefighters show off their skills.
The 35th-annual competition is Saturday, June 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Competition events are held at Southport Fire Department’s satellite station at 115 E. Nash Street. The event usually draws between a dozen to 18 teams, Southport Fire Department Assistant Chief Todd Coring said. Events include the Midnight Alarm/ Sprinkler Plug, Tanker Tug, Command Post, Bucket Brigade, and Barrel Push. There will also be engines, ladder trucks and equipment on display with plenty of firefighters on hand to answer questions. These events test teamwork and pay homage to firefighting and training methods of years past. Local departments participate, and teams have also travelled as far away as Taylorsville (in Alexander County), Coring recalled. The Southport department hosted the crew from Taylorsville the year they participated, Coring said. He said they had a great time, and that’s one of the main reasons Southport holds the competition every year. Coring has been a part of the Southport Fire Department since 1991 and has risen through the ranks to his current position. He said the competition was originally
organized on Oak Island as a way for local departments to train and fellowship together, and the Southport Department picked it up in 1984. “Most don’t realize, but the events actually simulate and allow firefighters to train and practice skills we use each and every call,” Coring said. “The best part of hosting the event to me is the true overall interactions with everyone,” Coring said. “It’s a day when we can come together, have a good time, relax a little and laugh. Usually our interactions are during an emergency under stress. The competition is truly a ‘family environment’ where there aren’t worries or tragedy, just responders coming together to have good time and enjoy what we do.”

FITNESS Keeping Our Balance The Importance of Balance Training and Fall Prevention Southport Summer Market to be Drop-Off Point for Food Pantry Downtown Southport, Inc. (DSI, Inc.) is sponsoring “Fill the Food Pantry” initiative during the
2019 Southport Summer Market Market customers are asked to drop off canned foods, boxed foods, diapers, and baby wipes to the designated collection box located near the stage area in Franklin Square Park. Donations will be taken to the Oak Island Southport Interchurch Fellowship Food Pantry each week. The initiative will continue throughout the market season. The Southport Summer Market will be held on Wednesdays from May 1 through August 28, 2019 in Franklin Park in downtown Southport. “DSI is excited to sponsor this important initiative during the market season,” said Peggy Popelars, President, DSI. “This is just one of the many ways we fulfill our mission of supporting the community by extending a helping hand to those in need.” Bill Hogue, manager of the pantry, said the pantry was established for one essential purpose: to provide food for the hungry. More than 24,000 individuals receive assistance during the year.
Info About the Food Pantry To qualify to receive goods, recipients must show proof that they live in Southport, Oak Island, Boiling Spring Lakes, Winnabow, or Sunset Harbor. Once qualified, they can shop twice a month. The pantry at 249 West Boiling Spring Road is open 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and Saturdays and 6 to 7:15 p.m. on Thursdays. t is no secret that falling down causes injuries. But what you might not know is that 30 to 60 percent of elderly individuals living in a community fall each year, with many of them experiencing multiple falls per year. To make matters worse, falls are actually the leading cause of injury related deaths in older adults and a significant cause of disability in this population. Therefore, prevention of falls and subsequent injuries should by a high priority; and a balance training program may be one of the key methods. According to the National Institute for Health (NIH), a balance training program strengthens self-efficacy in balance control which leads to improved fall related self-efficacy, reduced fear of falling, increased walking speed, and improved physical function. Balance training is especially important and yet an often overlooked component of post-surgical recovery. Adding balance training to the post-surgical exercise program has been shown to reduce fall risk and improve overall ambulation ability. According to the US Physical Activity Guidelines and the American College of Sports Medicine, older adults should follow a multi-component physical activity program that includes balance training along with aerobic and muscle strengthening activities. Specific balance training is recommended to be performed at least 3 times per week, but daily is the best medicine. The goal of any balance and fall prevention training program should be to ultimately get the participants out of their chairs and on their feet. If independent living and a high level of function are the desired results, the individual must be able to walk, carry things, weight shift, react, respond,

...falls are actually the leading cause of injury related deaths in older adults and a significant cause of disability. slow down, and stop…all while staying upright. Are you in need of some balance training? You can assess yourself with a simple baseline test of Standing on 1-Leg. To perform the test, simply stand on one leg without support of the upper body or bracing of one leg against the other. The number of seconds you are able to maintain this position is what is measured. Test ends when the foot touches down or the upper body touches something for support. (IMPORTANT: always perform this test near a stable object) How did you do? The longer the better of course; however it is important to note that seniors double their
chances of falling and sustaining an injury if they are unable to perform this test for at least 5 seconds. The goals of a balance training program should include: Maintaining Neutral, Single Leg Balance, Level Changes, Weight Shifting, Walking and Carrying Capability, and Reaction Time. Along with the above mentioned balance training program goals, strength training plays a significant role in fall prevention. When we lose our balance the following muscles must jump into action and they must be strong enough to do their job when called upon: •
Toes grip the floor and the muscles of the calf decelerate the ankle
•
Core muscles must contract to stabilize the spine and hips
•
Quadriceps (front thigh muscles) lock and stabilize the knee
•
Glutes (buttocks) and Hamstrings (back of thigh) decelerate the hip

KITCHEN Garden Fresh
Summertime means Good Food STORY BY KRIS BEASLEY
W
hile I was on vacation, I noticed some big silver containers filled with vegetables and I thought I would like to try that at home. My husband, Alan found some at a local farm store. They are actually water troughs used for cows and horses. He bought 40 gallon troughs. I wanted wheels on them so we could move them around, so much to Alan’s chagrin, he put wheels and a handle on them for me. We drilled holes in the bottom and put about one inch of gravel in the bottom then covered it with soil. Since we had two, we decided to grow herbs in one and veggies in the other.
We also planted some things by seed. Lettuce, chives, carrots and, corn. Our grandchildren, Carter and Jake picked out some vegetable plants including cucumber, cantaloupe and, watermelon. We planted everything in early April and
we enjoyed our first meal from the garden on May 13th. Our daughter, Brooke’s boyfriend, Billy made us some homemade teriyaki sauce. So I marinated some Tuna steaks for 30 minutes in the sauce. Then I seared them in a pan on both sides
(about 2 min each side). Then I placed them in a preheated oven at 250 for five minutes. I washed the lettuce and added some cucumbers and strawberries (store bought). Tossed with some Asian dressing and presto, dinner. It was just lettuce, but it was so cool to plant the seeds, see it grow, then harvest and eat. Best of all, it was so good! Alan and I went fishing and caught

PAN-SEARED FLOUNDER WITH FRIED ROSEMARY AND GARLIC Ingredients: 1 TB Olive Oil 3 Garlic cloves, thinly sliced 3 Rosemary sprigs 2 Flounder filets Salt, Pepper and Paprika to taste Lemon wedges
Heat Olive Oil in a pan over medium heat and sauté Garlic and Rosemary. Cook stirring for 3 minutes. Transfer Garlic and Rosemary to the bowl using a slotted spoon. Reserve oil. Sprinkle fish with Salt, Pepper and Paprika. Add fish to the pan and cook 3 minutes per side. Flounder is a fragile fish, so take care when flipping. If it breaks up, oh well. It still tastes good! When finished, place fish on serving platter and top with Garlic and Rosemary. You can take the Rosemary off the stem if
you want. Add Lemon wedges and serve. Even if you don’t have a garden or boat, you can still enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables by going to a local Farmer’s Market. The Southport market is on Wednesday mornings at Franklin Square Park. And the Oak Island market is on Monday mornings at the ball fields behind Town Hall. And there are several fish mongers around, where you can get fresh fish or seafood.

Time to Come Alive!
The Wilmington Conservatory of Fine Arts Presents Another Hit Musical STORY BY THOMAS BARNETT
L
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, I now present to you, back by popular demand, a show that we have all been waiting for, brought to you by the Wilmington Conservatory of Fine Arts, without further adieu, it’s the production, Come Alive! On June 15, make sure to catch the 2 p.m. matinée or the 6 p.m. performance. This is a spectacular show that combines dance, song, and dialog, to tell the story of a young woman’s journey. This journey entails finding oneself and escaping the monotony of everyday life. With enthralling music from the Greatest Showman and other musical arrangements, this show is filled with talented and local performers. Mark your calendars for June 15th! There will be two showings on these days, one at 2pm and one at 6pm. You will be mesmerized as you feast your eyes upon the vibrant
circus atmosphere, with energetic and relatable characters. It will warm your heart, and leave you inspired. Come Alive is brought to you by a very talented local studio, Wilmington Conservatory of Fine Arts, (WCFA). These are the same people who have put on cherished shows of original choreography in the past such as, the Sleeping Beauty Ballet, The Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe, and Hope Has Come, a show created to help usher in hope and healing for those impacted by hurricane Florence.

WCFA is a school that specializes in teaching kids of all ages, about the power, importance, and fundamentals of the fine arts. They offer a plethora of dance classes; As a multifaceted organization that also offers classes in character, tap, contemporary, hip-hop, and jazz. You can also learn how to play instruments, learn about the visual arts, yoga, pilates, singing, and theatre there. In addition, they have Music Together® classes for babies and toddlers. It’s never too early to start educating your children about the richness of the arts. Summer is the perfect time to sign up and get involved. According to Cory Smith, the dedicated founder and director of the WCFA, “Summer camps and intensives are a great time to get acclimated to the program, and there will be placement classes to help figure out where the a student would best fit”. Many students in this studio are aspiring to take their talent to the professional level, and if you glance at the WCFA’s website, you will see all of the accolades that these talented students have achieved. Dance has taken former students to professional levels and careers and have made it as far as Broadway, Las Vegas and medaling in the Youth American Grand Prix. “The students will get the chance to be apart of a professional caliber show”, says Josh Wise, the talented writer and director of the show. When I asked Josh about what the audience could expect, he was reluctant to give too many details away, but he did mention, gorgeous costumes and set design, and “rumors” of an 11ft circus tent to give the show depth and dimension. Josh and Cory are not the only ones working diligently, in the show there are over 100 dancers, many of whom have
been working six days a week, giving it their all. Plus all of the dedicated dance teachers have played a pivotal part in the choreography. When I talked to Cory she made it clear that the atmosphere at the studio is light hearted and charismatic, the students love what they do, the WCFA is like a second home to them. For Cory, WCFA is more than just a brainchild. When I asked her what her organization means to her she said, “Children grow up in this atmosphere, and spend some of the best parts of their lives here. We are touching lives, it is not only artistically fulfilling but it is also such an honor and a responsibility”. When I looked on the Wilmington Conservatory of Fine Arts’ website for the first time, they had prominently displayed the definition of the word “conservatory”. It means a school specializing in one of the fine arts but it also means to guard, observe, keep safe and/or sound. It is clear to me that no better word could be used to describe this organization. Remember June 15th at the Wilson Center, at either 2 p.m. or 6 p.m. Come Alive is family friendly, relatable to all, entertaining, exciting, and above all, inspiring! Leland, and surrounding areas, take the time to break free from the monotony of everyday life, and do yourself a favor by coming alive!

All About that Bass Local musician Roy Sykes Jr keeps on rocking STORY BY CARLA EDSTROM

orking closely with the drummer, the bass guitar is the foundation and driving force of a good rock band. It provides the rhythmic energy of the band, and anchors the harmonies. A good bass player is worth their weight in gold.
Roy Sykes Jr. is a local bass player who is well known around town by musicians and audiences alike as a very talented bass player and a friend to everyone. He has been playing the bass guitar since he was a teenager in the 1960’s. He is a born musician, and even after 50 years of playing, he is still all about the bass. Roy is really the reason why I am singing again. I first met him about four years ago when he had just moved to my neighborhood. He invited me down to hear his band called The Groove Pirates play a gig, and then invited me on stage to sing back up and harmo-
nies and later join the band. I am grateful to him for that day, and I appreciate his solid friendship. Roy’s parents were musicians and both taught music, so he was raised playing music from a young age. “Both my parents were graduates of the New England Conservatory of Music and both were teachers,” said Roy. “My dad was a jazz musician and a church organist. My mother had a Master’s degree in music and taught music in schools and played the pianoforte. So I grew up around music,” he said. “My mom started teaching me piano around the time

SHOWCASE I was six or seven and I played it mostly up until I was 15. Then I picked the drums and I pretty much played every instrument in high school. But the day I picked up a bass guitar when I was 16, that did it for me. I’ve been a bass player ever since,” he said. “There’s just something about that bottom end and holding the whole band together with the drummer that got me. I fell in love with it and I’ve been there ever since.” He was born and raised in and around Boston until he was around age 11 when Roy’s family moved to New Hampshire. He has lived in the Southport area for around four and a half years. “I pretty much call New Hampshire home,” Roy said. Besides Roy’s parents’ early musical training and influences, he says his greatest musical influences include powerhouse rock bassists like Getty Lee and jazz bassist Jaco Pastorius as well as keyboard player Keith Emerson. As a self-taught bass player, Roy spent many hours tearing apart music and learning the bass parts to songs. “I sat in my mom’s back room when I was 16 years old
and put on Big Brother and the Holding Company with Janis Joplin, and just played that constantly for about two months,” he said. “I had picked up a cheap bass for
36 Southport Magazine / JUNE 2019 / www.SouthportMag.com
like $25, I can’t even remember what kind it was but it was decent. I just sat there and to this day I could probably play the entire album blindfolded because I played it so much. And then I just evolved from there. I studied different bands and different styles but Southern Rock is my favorite.” Roy’s musical career has run the gamut of the business, playing in all different kinds of rock bands and he has also been hired to do studio work. “I had met some musicians in the band Beacon Street Union out of Boston when I around 18 and working as a bus boy at the Meadows Restaurant, and they introduced me to a band that was looking for a bass player,” he said. “They asked me if I was interested. Of course I was,” said Roy. “And at that time, you had to join the musicians union for any studio work. You had to be in the union. So, I joined and did a few studio sessions with them. For studio work, they throw sheet music at you and give you like 20 minutes to learn it and then they bring you out and they say, play it. This was about three years after I picked up the bass.” According to Roy, the music scene was a lot different back then with working
bands easily pulling in over $1000 a gig a few times a month. But the key elements of a good band are still the same. “It’s all about the show and about getting along,” said Roy. “The most important thing is camaraderie above all else. If you can’t get along, it’s never going to work. The audience will pick up on that. Second is musicianship, and thirdly professionalism. If you don’t have a good vibe with everyone in the band, it’s not gonna work. I was in a great band in Maine for 23 years called Time Riders and it worked and everyone got along. The only reason we broke up was because I moved.” Playing bass guitar remains a huge part of Roy’s life and he plays gigs whenever he gets the chance, which includes filling in with local bands. “For some reason, I have a natural talent toward playing bass that I don’t have with any other instrument. It’s my stress relief, and it’s my first love after my family. If anything is going to calm me down after a bad day, it’s going to be picking up a bass and playing. It’s part of who I am. And I will never stop playing.” Email him at : bassman51@hotmail.com

Falcone and D’s delights with Italian Fare STORY BY KASS FINCHER
B
loose
usiness owners Orazio Falcone and Dianeth Kingsbury opened Falcone and D’s restaurant in March 2017. On the corner of Hwy 2l1and Midway Road in the Lowe’s shopping center, this traditional Italian restaurant has an extensive lunch and dinner menu, with each dish prepared with the freshest ingredients and unique herbs and sauces.
Hailing from Sicily originally, Falcone has been in the United States for over 40 years. He and Kingsbury, who is a native of Guatemala, moved to the Leland area in 2012, where they opened their first restaurant. They developed quite a loyal following there, but decided to move to the current location in Bolivia when they had the opportunity to have a larger space. When asked where he found his recipes, Falcone laughs. “I’ve been cooking since 1980, mostly traditional family recipes,” he says. “But Dianeth and I have developed some new recipes and combinations; we’re always looking to offer special dishes.” Popular starters include calamari, mussels marinara and bruschetta pomodoro – the latter being toasted Italian bread topped with diced tomatoes, garlic, basil and balsamic reduction. Eggplant parmigiana and “crazy eggplant parmigiana” are offered on penne, angel hair or spaghetti. The pastas are served with special homemade sauces. Chicken piccata, chicken francese, chicken parmigiana and chicken florentina are among the chicken pasta dishes. The latter is a chicken breast sauteed with mushrooms and topped with fresh spinach and provolone cheese in a Chablis wine, with a touch of marinara sauce served over pasta. If you prefer seafood, you can choose from mussels, clams or shrimp served over a bed of linguini. The seafood combo offers scallops, shrimp, mussels and calamari simmered in marinara sauce and served over linguini. One standout favorite is the “Penne a la Dianeth,” a combination Falcone says he and Dianeth developed together because the ingredients are her
favorites – shrimp, scallops and crab meat in a very nice cream sauce, with a touch of cognac to boot. About 55 percent of their business is the aforementioned “kitchen” offerings. And the rest is from the pizzeria. Traditional
favorite pizzas include pepperoni, sausage and mushroom, with your choice of many different toppings, including bacon, spinach, artichokes, pineapple and roasted peppers. Specialty pies include the meat lover’s pie, with bacon, sausage, pepperoni and ham. Featuring fresh mozarella or provolone, the restaurant features a variety of cheese steak subs, calzone and stromboli. Mouthwatering desserts include the “vesuvius,” cannoli, cheesecake and of course the ever-popular tiramisu. The restaurant seats 89 people and also has a separate private room seating 30

With kitchen, bar and wait staff of 14 – many of whom have been with them since they opened – Falcone says “we’re like a family, we welcome all to come and enjoy with us.” At their current location, Falcone says they have received great customer support from St. James, Oak Island, Bolivia and Southport residents. But they also have many followers who patronized their Leland location make the short drive to the restaurant here. When asked what he’d like to share with the community, Falcone said, “The one thing I’d like to say is ‘thank you’ to all those supporting us. Come in, have a glass of wine, enjoy a meal and make new friends.”

ftentimes, people who practice yoga are stereotyped as young women who are able to hold impossible poses like handstands and back-bends. And although some of us can do those poses, it can be discouraging to others who would really benefit from yoga. Starting any exercise regimen can be daunting especially since we can’t all do the things we used to do. In reality, yoga is a perfect practice for anyone at any age to start with life changing results.
Beverly Weinstein, owner and yogi at Ageless Yoga on Oak Island, understands the fears and apprehension. “My goal for Ageless Yoga was always to bring yoga to seniors and first timers. And to open

up awareness that everyone can do yoga. Yoga isn’t just for the young and fit,” says Beverly. “I do a lot of private classes with seniors that have health issues such as Parkinson’s, MS, hip or knee surgery, shoulder & wrist injuries. There is always a way to adapt yoga to fit your body & health!” As it is a creative practice, yoga is considered to be a healing art. According to Beverly, the definition of healing arts is “any creative practice that promotes healing, wellness, coping and personal change. That can be anything from music, art, writing, dance and movement. Yoga promotes healing, coping and personal change, and can be so much more than a physical practice,” she said. “Yoga means “union”, it is a practice of mind, body & spirit, through movement, breath work and meditation. If you allow yourself to get lost in the physical practice, you can begin to free the mind of stress & worry and when you release the mind you can allow your spirit or the higher consciousness to soar,” said Beverly. In 2010 Beverly began her yoga journey at a local yoga studio called East Meets West Yoga Studio in Vienna, VA. “I set a New Year’s resolution for myself to make a change in my life that would physically & mentally move me. I received a coupon in the mail for a 10-class pass to EMW, and I thought ‘this is it,’” she said. “I became transformed in the mind, body, spirit movement of yoga, and I couldn’t get enough. The EMW studio offered a wide variety of classes and workshops, seven days a week. But in 2010 as I’m spending the summer in Oak Island, there wasn’t that variety of yoga I’d become accustomed to and I felt a lacking. That lacking pushed me towards becoming a yoga teacher,” she said. “I wanted to provide yoga for seniors as well

“I wanted to provide yoga for seniors as well as everyone.” as everyone. Since I was a senior myself, I understood the needs of the body and the first steps of beginning a yoga practice.” Beverly offers personal one-on-one or group lessons, which is helpful for first time yoga students. “We teach them to let their body meet yoga where they are, as opposed to have yoga meet them. Learn how to do yoga for where you are. You can learn what your physical limitations are on a personal one-on-one private class and adapt that to the group class you are going to take. It’s about taking it one step at a time and then growing from there,”
she said. “When you are 20 you can go out and jump into any class and you can learn that way, but when you are a senior you can’t do that.” Beverly says seniors should take a more gentle approach to prevent injuries. Born in Oakland, CA., Beverly’s family moved to Oak Island in 1966, and in 1969 she graduated from Southport High School. “Even after leaving the area to pursue life, Oak Island was my family home and was always part of me.” She and her husband Ronnie returned to retire here and live in her parents’ home that they renovated. At age 62, Beverly completed an impressive 500 hours of yoga teacher training and also holds a Level 1 and 2 Certification for Energy Medicine Yoga Training with Lauren Walker. “My training first started as learning from the teachers at EMW. When the decision was made to retire to OKI, I decided to pursue the Yoga Teacher Training at ILM Yoga School, “she said. “When I was in my training, I was sixty-one years old and I was the oldest in the class. And the youngest was 15. So I was sitting

LIFESTYLE there at the end of the training and we are thinking about our objectives, and our path and our intention,” she said. “I was thinking where were we going with this? Then I realized that I needed to call my studio Ageless because that is where I was in that practice. It encompasses any age,’ she said. “My focus then did become about the aging because when I moved to Oak Island, there wasn’t any yoga for seniors.” Ageless Yoga started in a small one-bedroom apartment in 2013, and then evolved into the studio space they have now at 200 Country Club Dr., Oak Island. “The yogi that I am today is different than the one from six years ago, and I’m sure I will keep evolving. I love researching & learning new techniques. Like all energy, I need to keep moving & expanding. Future plans ... planning to keep doing what we’ve been doing for past six years since it’s served as well and our reputation. But we will still have different offerings from time to time.” Beverly also makes mala necklaces and sells them at the Crystal Web on Oak Island and at Poiema in Southport. A mala is typically a string of 108 beads, often using natural gemstones, wood, seeds or semiprecious stones that can be worn as
a necklace. Malas’ are a tool to help with meditation practices. They can help keep the mind focused on meditation, or count mantras in sets of 108 repetitions similar to rosary beads used for praying. “Making a mala is very meditative, as you must sit and concentrate on the beading and I think it’s the same when people use them in yoga.” Beverly also makes the tassels on her Malas’ out of cotton or silk. She uses many gorgeous crystal beads such as rose quartz and African turquoise. Ageless Yoga has classes for every level of physical abilities. “Our class offerings are Hatha based and range from Gentle to Power Vinyasa. Yoga Sculpt with use of weights & straps to Restorative using props to support, relax and heal the mind and body,” says Beverly. All the class descriptions and schedule can be found on-line @agelessyoga4u.com. You can reach her at 910-248-YOGI (9644) email: classes@ agelessyoga4u.com.

CHEERS Quenching Your Summer Thirst
Non-traditional new brews hit the spot STORY BY JEFF STITES
W
ith the summer season now fully upon us, we are faced with a huge number of choices in the local beer cooler. The beer business is, if we’re being honest, a bit iffy right now. The craft brew revolution continues in full swing, but its numbers just can’t replace the people drifting away from beer and into other adult beverages.
While this is tough for the brewers, it has led to certain benefits for us beer drinkers. The one ace in the hole these businesses have is innovation, and they are playing that card for all it’s worth lately. Today it seems there are more varieties of just American IPAs than there were varieties of beer 30 years ago. And it isn’t just the hop-heads that win here, there are a ton of new fruity beers coming out, from aqua frescos to goses to simply old style infused with new ingredients. And then there is the quest to attract that elusive creature, the Millennial Beer Drinker. Researchers have determined that todays youngest beer consumers are interested in simple ingredients, honest labeling and healthy (or at least perceived healthier) products. This has led to the explosion of hard seltzers you’ve surely seen on your local supermarket’s shelves. I’ve grabbed a few of these newer products, trying to find a little something that might appeal to everyone, and sampled
them for you, my dear readers. It’s a tough job, but somebody’s gotta do it, right?
WHITE OAK JAI ALAI INDIA PALE ALE
Cigar City Brewing 7.5% ABV 65 IBU The Label Says: Our unique oak-aged IPA marries the tropical profile of Jai Alai IPA with notes of coconut and vanilla contributed by white oak. Rustic wood notes abound, adding further dimension to our citrusy India Pale Ale. My Take: This was a totally selfish choice. I’ve written about Jai Alai before and it remains one of my very favorite beers, and this is, despite the flowery prose in the label description, simply a kicked-up version of the original. I can’t honestly say I get a lot of coconut notes, though maybe if I use my imagination I get a little, but the white oak truly does add a depth to the flavor of an already excellent recipe.

MURAL AGUA FRESCA CERVEZA
New Belgium Brewing in collaboration with Primus Cerveceria in Mexico City 4% ABV 11 IBU The Label Says: In collaboration with Mexico City’s Cerveceria Primus, this aqua Fresca ale features hibiscus, agave, watermelon and lime for a fresh, vibrant sip. Inspired by the Mexican aqua Fresca tradition of fruit infused beverages. My Take: Do you see what I mean about these folks getting creative in the brew lab? These folks have combined two fruits (one citrus and one sweet) with a plant and a flower to come up with something different. It really is different, too. For one, it’s pink. That was a bit of a surprise. The flavor is not very beer-y at all, but not at all bad. While there is hardly any hops bitterness, it isn’t terribly sweet either. This isn’t the beer for everyone, it made my wife make a face, but for the right person, under the right circumstances, it may be a good choice.
PASSION FRUIT KOLSCH
New Belgium Brewing 4.3% ABV 13 IBU The Label Says: Traditional Kolsch brewed with passion fruit juice and tropical American hops. My Take: I’m not sure what “tropical American hops” are, but who am I to judge? There isn’t nearly as much craziness in this brew as there was in the last, but the choices of the kolsch style and passion fruit intrigued me. They both wound up being wise choices, as this beer is neither too much fruit or too much beer, it strikes a very pleasant balance. I may have found a new go-to summer beverage!
CAPE LINE SPARKLING COCKTAILS—STRAWBERRY LEMONADE
Cape Line Beverage Company 4.5% ABV IBU is not really a factor here The Label Says: Our mission is to craft naturally delicious cocktails with only 6 simple ingredient and nothing artificial. Lightly sparkling and coming in at only 120 calories, this is flavorful refreshment you can feel good about. My Take: This is a prime example of marketing to Millennials. It hits all the “right” notes concerning natural versus artificial, gluten-free and few ingredients. I’m not sure why one would be scared of ingredients in general, but then I’m old, so there’s that. This doesn’t call itself a “hard seltzer” because those are all so yesterday now. It all just seems so silly. But the beverage itself isn’t half bad. It’s not my thing, but it isn’t bad at all. It isn’t sickly sweet like a wine cooler, or virtually tasteless like seltzer water. If I weren’t in the mood for beer and I didn’t have any liquor around or the mixers to make something refreshing, this might be an option.

Southern Boutique
Shop Girl offers fun clothing for the young at heart
July 2nd – 4th
NORTH CAROLINA 4TH OF JULY FESTIVAL
STORY BY KASS FINCHER
S
Downtown Southport. patriot@nc4thofjuly.com www.nc4thofjuly.com.
hop Girl owner Tiea Kaseman brings a friendly and fun approach to this popular ladies boutique, with locations here in Southport and Sunset Beach. We spoke with Tiea about the stores and her customers.
Tell us about your background and how you started the shop here.
I have a retail background in merchandising and management. I’ve loved fashion since I was a little kid. When Scott and I decided to move to North Carolina in 1997, I didn’t want to go back into the retail environment with the long hours and late nights, so I worked in customer service management for seven years in Wilmington. One day Scott and I were visiting Southport and there was a big sign announcing construction of the building we’re in now. We decided then and there to buy a unit and open a boutique. That was in October 2004, and I’m still in the same location.
That was 15 years ago; isn’t that a real sign of success for a small business?
With my retail background, I was pretty confident, though it is risky. I’ve been very fortunate to be in that same location for 15 years. And for such a small town, I think we have a really strong retail district. People love Southport; they drive from Wilmington, from Myrtle Beach, they love coming and spending the day here. And the people that live here want to support local small businesses.
How would you describe your boutique’s offerings?
The store has definitely evolved over time, changing with the economy and fashion trends. My thing when I first opened was to strive for fun fashions for women who are young at heart. I have a mother/ daughter concept – I can have a 25 yearold daughter come in with her 60 year-old mother and they can shop together. One side of the store is for the more mature customer and the other side is geared to the younger customer. We’re very casual here; I’m not a tee shirt shop but I cater to women who really like to dress, with fun outfits and accessories.
October 3rd – 5th
U.S. OPEN KING MACKEREL TOURNAMENT
“I have a mother/daughter concept – I can have a 25 year-old daughter come in with her 60 year-old mother and they can shop together.” What are your most popular lines? What sizes do you offer?
My Tribal line is huge because of its cut; it fits women nicely and has great quality with reasonable prices. Plus they carry everything – shorts, pants, tops, sweaters, skorts – they do it all. Tempo Paris is another big one; it’s a really unique and fun line, probably my personal favorite. I also do a lot of staples – leggings, tees, accessories, camis. It’s important to do a lot of staples because that keeps people coming in on a regular basis year round. People can also pick up a gift, anywhere from $6 to $64. We offer sizes 2-14, extra-small to extra-large, depending on what the lines offer. People may want more sizes, but in a 1400 square foot store, I have to focus on the sizes I can display.
Tell us about your customers – how would you describe them?
We are fortunate to have a lot of regular, loyal customers from Southport, St. James and Oak Island. I would say 60% is local, 20% second home owners, and the rest are day-trippers and tourists. I consider tourists to be icing on the cake – they’re great to have, but my local customers are my base. I know my customers and they know me – they love coming in. For me, the customer service part is huge. People enjoy coming in because they know me and they know my staff. We let them take their time; we’re happy to help if they want it.
Are the two locations different in any way?
Southport is definitely my best location – people love Southport, it’s become a great shopping district pretty much year-round. I have mostly the same lines for both stores, but I keep flexibility to move my merchandise around. For example if I buy something for the Southport store that doesn’t move, I might move it to the Sunset Beach store where it may do better. The Sunset Beach store is much more seasonal, more of a tourist community, so I have to be more careful there with price points.
What markets do you attend to buy for the stores? And how would you distinguish your shop from others in town?
Atlanta is the easiest market for me but I need to branch out, maybe head out to Las Vegas for their market. As for the other boutiques, I try to be careful and not carry the same lines as they do. In a small town, you really need to be different; people don’t want to walk into four or five boutiques and see the same lines.
How do you promote your shop to the community?
Having been in the same location all these years has been beneficial because people know where I’m at. And my store design with the big windows is huge. All the time I hear people say “I was driving by last night going to dinner and I saw the mannequins in the window.” I would say most of my promotion is through word of mouth. I also do some fashion shows, donations for charity events, some print advertising, signage and Facebook.

BIZ Q&A

Have you learned anything over time that would have changed how you developed your business in the beginning?
The store here has definitely changed over time. When I started here, I sold very high-end lines. Several years later, when the economy tanked, I had to scramble. The higher end lines don’t really work anymore. I’ve also become a better buyer. I pay close attention to what my customers want and buy for them at the markets. The big thing for me is constantly being willing to change, matching my store to what the customers want.
What advice would you give others wanting to open a similar boutique (not here, of course)?
The biggest thing is location. Southport is great because we’re an hour’s drive from malls. We don’t have the competition like the outlets in Myrtle Beach. Besides carefully choosing your location, you have to go all out, you have to make the investment. You have to be willing to take the risk of losing money in the beginning. You don’t pay yourself the first few years; you have to put that money back into the business, to help it grow and keep your inventory full. And you need to be in the store yourself, to see customers and learn more about what they want.
It sounds like you and your staff really know your customers?
wonderful ladies who work in my Southport store; three of them have been with me 8-14 years. And I’m a hands-on business owner, it’s important for me to be in the shop 3-5 days each week or more. It’s like a big family. I was just talking to one of my long-time customers the other day; I have literally watched her family grow up. I watched her daughters in high school, then graduating from college, then shopping for things when they got married. I’m really lucky to have a strong and supportive local customer base; they’re the reason Shop Girl continues to thrive.

HISTORY The Perfect Tan
Why this strange obsession with the sun? STORY BY KASS FINCHER
S
ummer is here! And for those of us who as teenagers grew up with billboards flashing the Coppertone girl’s bare bottom, summertime meant lying out in the sun to get that perfect tan. Going to the beach with a pale body, much less sporting a bikini with one, was a sure road to embarrassment for any self-respecting teenage girl.
But according to the website fashionista.com, it hasn’t always been this way. Not all cultures around the world seek that honey glow. And up until the early 1900s, wealthy European and American women shielded themselves with parasols, hats and gloves to protect their skin. To have tanned skin meant you were a laborer or commoner who worked outdoors. But with the cultural shifts of the rebellious flappers in the 1920s, women unleashed their corsets, shortened their skirts, and happily engaged in
more hedonistic activities like smoking, drinking and dancing. And the French beachside resorts began staying open in the summer, when sunbathing for their rich and stylish patrons became a thing. When Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel was photographed sporting a golden tan at the French Riviera in 1923, the trendsetter launched not just the practice of tanning, but a whole tanning industry. Swimsuits, tanning oils, cosmetics and clothing lines grew out of the demand for products to help women acquire or show off their skin’s honey glow. Though not much was known about the dangers of UV rays at the time, L’Oreal introduced the first UV-filtering suntan oil in 1935. Coppertone’s sun block was introduced in 1945, but took off in the late 50’s with the cute girl showing off her tan. Of course, the introduction of the bikini in 1946 made it easier to get an all-over tan for those with the body to embrace it. In 1962, Ursula Andress, the Bond girl in Dr. No, wore a white bikini with the deep tan to show it off. And even all-American Barbie got her “Malibu” makeover in 1972, complete with darker skin and bleached blond hair. In 1978, the first tanning bed was introduced. While paler skin was once the sign of privilege, now a honey tanglow was an indication that you had the time and money to darken your skin at your leisure. Spray tans be-
came a new option starting in the late 1990s, and celebrities on Hollywood’s red carpets still rely on them for their starry glow. Despite tanning’s continuing popularity, through the years we have often been warned of the dangers of the sun’s UV rays, with the Skin Cancer Foundation attributing 90% of all skin cancers to too much exposure to the sun. They also claim that 90% of aging factors like wrinkles and brown spots can be blamed on those damaging rays.

Yet many of us still try to hit that sweet spot between winter-pale and summer-glow bodies. No one likes to get sunburned, so we lather up with the 50 SPF or higher sun block products to protect ourselves when lying on the beach. But perhaps the smarter approach would be to watch the outdoor preferences of dogs, babies and old folks, who typically seek shade over hot sun. Maybe they could teach us a few things. Or perhaps we should just bring back the parasols.
