IN THIS ISSUE

Ifeel like I’ve been writing this a lot lately, but the Maggie Issue really is one of my very favorites. It begins with reading the comments our readers submit to nominate our winners. We ask for stories of what makes our community great, put simply, and boy do we get them! Then we get to make up the award names. We try to do as few “Best (insert thing here)” awards, because everyone does that, and instead, we work to craft award categories that reflect the comments sent in by the readers. For example, comment after comment about Loco Jo’s included the word “welcoming,” so they won Most Welcoming Restaurant. The process is fun and includes taking photos of all our winners. Organizing photos of 50-some entrepreneurs is like herding cats, but the excitement and smiles I get to see while I’m working on the photos makes all the cat herding completely worth it. We hope you enjoy seeing this year’s winners! Also, this month features the debut of our new Finding Flavor column by Ashley Davis, owner of the soon-to-open Southern, a Gathering Place restaurant.

Up Your Arts’ Big Plans For Old City Hall

Imagine

an exciting night on the town with friends. You meet up in a beautiful sculpture garden, aglow with white lights, and delight in the sound of a string quartet playing under the bows of a live oak. You head inside a bit early to admire the museum quality artwork that adorns the walls of the brick foyer. You climb a wide staircase to the Grand Hall, then take a moment to admire the crystal chandeliers, ornate tin ceiling and velvet draped stage before finding your seats. You enjoy the performance (a play, concert or dance), then head across the hallway to grab a cappuccino in the café. Before leaving, you linger to watch the artist in residence working on his current masterpiece.

A stimulating night like this would currently require a long, dark drive into Wilmington or Raleigh, but what if you could do it all right here in Southport? Sounds like a dream, I know, but it’s actually more of a vision, a vision that’s now in plain sight. It’s the end-goal of the “Save the Hall, Ya’ll” campaign, an effort to turn the old Brunswick County Courthouse on Moore Street into a community center for creative and visual arts. The project is spearheaded by Southport’s Up Your Arts group and they are asking for public support to

turn their vision into a reality!

What’s Up with Up Your Arts?

Up Your Arts is a non-profit organization, founded in 2017 to support and enhance the creative and performing arts throughout the greater Southport area. According to its website, UYA “aims to weave a safety net of assistance and accessibility for artists and audiences alike to flourish.”

“I was part of an emerging music community in the Southport area … and realized early on that there was not a great many ways to promote this emerging scene. Hence, I was a founding member of Up Your Arts, which I saw as becoming a unique organization to promote and support all of the creative and performing arts throughout the greater Southport Area. And we established very specific mission tenants to support the overall vision for Up Your Arts,” explained local musician and artist John Keiffer, one of the founding members of UYA.

Up Your Arts works to support the mission of the Southport Center for Creativity, a division of Brunswick Community College located on Lord Street, and to promote individual artists and local art galleries like Franklin Square, Ricky Evans, and Lantanas. They also support performers and musicians throughout our area. You may be familiar with some of the UYA events, such as the annual Plein Air Festival, Open Mike Nights

at American Fish Company, live music at the Fourth of July Festival, and last year’s Open Doors project, which challenged artists to transform antique doors from a historic home on Bay Street that were donated by Ginger Harper. The redesigned doors were displayed throughout town and later auctioned off as a fundraiser for UYA.

Save the Hall, Ya’ll

In 2019, members of Up Your Arts became aware that the City of Southport was struggling to decide what to do with the old courthouse, a historic building located at the corner of Moore and Davis Streets.

The building, owned by the City, is a large, two-story brick and stucco structure constructed in the 1850s. It was the original site of the Brunswick County Courthouse until 1977, when the county seat was relocated to Bolivia. The building later housed Southport’s City Hall, from 1979-2014. It was used as a site for public meetings for a few more years, but a leaky roof led to a serious mold issue, and concerns about lead paint and asbestos arose as well. Given its hazards and a lack of compliance with ADA requirements, the building was ultimately declared uninhabitable. But despite its problems, 201 E. Moore Street has good bones and no major structural decay. Although a new roof was eventually installed, the building has remained vacant since 2018.

Inspired by the building’s history as a center of municipal and civic activity, as well as its prominent downtown location, Up Your Arts developed the idea of turning the historic landmark into a community center for creative, visual and performing arts.

Keiffer, the visionary of this project, said, “Envision an arts center in the historic heart of the city: an informal gathering spot for everyone in our community and a must-see destination for out-of-town families and visitors. We

have a vision for a self-sustaining, stateof-the-art, performing and creative arts center that reflects the community we are. Informal, creative, responsible, caring.”

Since 2019, the City has signed a series of agreements with Up Your Arts to proceed with feasibility studies, architectural designs, and fundraising efforts. The group enlisted the aid of contractors, engineers, and architects and presented its findings to the City in 2020. Although efforts were stalled by the pandemic, the campaign continued. Drawings for the proposed reconstruction were commissioned, and paid for, by UYA. Wilmington-based Lisle Architecture & Design, the firm that designed Edward Teach Brewery and the Southport Market, developed a stunning 3D architectural plan, which is available to view on the UYA website. You can also view the building in its current state, as mapped out by a local videographer (while wearing a hazmat suit!). At this time, the cost estimate for the remediation work, redesign and renovations is approximately $3.5 million.

The Vision

In late January and early February, UYA held a series of town hall meetings to explain the project and solicit input from the public, ultimately garnering strong support for the proposed community-based art center. In an hourlong presentation, which included the 3D rendering of the architectural plans, Keiffer and other members of the UYA board shared their vision and provided details on the work to date.

Although program ideas and building designs still need to be refined, the initial vision is exciting! The rendering includes a graceful sculpture garden with places to sit, hold informal meetings, and create. UYA solicited help from the Southport Garden Club for the design.

The first floor of the building would hold a non-profit resource center, an arts resource center, a retail gallery for local artists and BCC students, a place for an “artist in residence,” and studio spaces available to rent. The second floor, formerly a courtroom, would be transformed into an elegant, open space where public meetings could be held, as well as concerts, shows, and receptions. Other possibilities on the second floor include a small broadcast booth, a commercial kitchen for culinary classes and catering, and a café.

Moving Forward

Bob Gentile, chairman of UYA, brings considerable knowledge and expertise to this project, having been instrumental in the successful completion of a sim-

ilar public-private project in New York. With a career as director of a non-profit education and recreation center, Bob is adept at securing grants and donations, and at leveraging public/private relationships.

Other members of the UYA board also bring talent and expertise to the project, including President Tina Powers, a realtor with years of experience working with local non-profits, and Treasurer Bonnie Bray, who had a 25-year career as a CFO with various local governments. Nonetheless, given the complexities of the project, UYA has determined a need to create a separate legal entity that will assume responsibility for financing, construction and on-going operations of the proposed art center. This new non-profit will be managed by a Board of Direc-

tors comprised of community members with expertise in areas that will ensure the project’s success.

“We will seek out individuals from the many existing civic, business, non-profit, and faith organizations that make Southport what it is,” Keiffer said. “We believe wholeheartedly that the key to the success of this project depends on wide spread community support. Some of these folks may assume official roles on the new non-profit organization, while many more will be asked to join in a volunteer capacity.”

Interested candidates should contact UYA at info@upyourarts.org.

While the landmark building will remain an asset of the City, UYA envisions it operating under a long-term public-private partnership. Furthermore, the group is committed to the notion that no taxpayer money will be used for the development or ongoing support of the arts center.

In addition to public and private donations, as well as support from the City of Southport, UYA will explore options for grants, tax credits offered for historical preservation, and funding from sources like the Main Street Revi-

talization Program and the Arts & Humanities Council. The group will also seek corporate sponsors as a means of ongoing operational support to supplement anticipated revenues generated from studio rentals and fees for the second-floor venue space.

“I learned that it takes time (years), patience, and a very good transparent partnership with the municipality (City of Southport) to raise the money needed to achieve this goal…… we will need to first develop an honest, open, and transparent common goal with the City of Southport’s Mayor, Aldermen and Community” Gentile said. “Once we all know we are on the same page, nothing should stop us from having a vibrant, self-sustaining, creative and performing arts center in the City of Southport, that serves many people without it being a tax burden on the people of Southport.”

To become a part of this incredible vision, consider making a donation to the “Save the Hall, Ya’ll” campaign. Go to www.upyourarts.org for more information.

The Fun of Living In A Movie Set Town

whoever was running that scene came on the speaker and asked us to please stay. He pointed to a tall building across the street and pointed out where the camera was on top of it. He said he would do a wide shot of the crowd scene and that he promised we would all be in the movie that way. And we were!

It was the summer of 2012 when “Safe Haven” was being filmed in Southport, out in the county, in Caswell Beach and in Oak Island as well. There was a call for extras to be in the movie’s parade scene, so I took a day off work and my son and I decided to join in with a couple of friends. We knew that filming even just one scene can take a while, so we went prepared with waters and snacks, sunscreen, and whatever else we thought we’d need. The day started out grey and a little drizzly, then changed to a lot of sunshine and heat and humidity.

But it was fun and I am so glad we did it. The concept was simple. The parade was a patriotic July 4th parade, which was pretty easy for Southport to pull off. We were asked to wear red and blue, and they gave us little flags to wave. We lined a few blocks of Moore Street and they ran a small version of a parade down the street, complete with a few floats and even a small group from South Brunswick High School’s marching band. And then we waited a while and they ran it again. Then we waited a while more and they ran it again. And

again. I can’t remember exactly how many times they had that parade come by, but I think it was six or seven.

As the morning changed to afternoon and the summer day heated up, we started losing some of the crowd. While they were setting up for one final run, the director or

Let me set the scene for you. Our part was easy. We were to be happy parade-goers. The lead bad guy was supposed to walk around and through the parade, looking for his wife and getting more and more upset that he wasn’t finding her. At one point, he threw his water bottle down in frustration. That’s where we were, near the spot where he threw the water bottle down. I may or may not still have one of those bottles after a member of the crew kicked it over to me. It has a cute label from the fictional store in the movie with a hilarious description of how the water comes from the finest local taps. I love that they put effort into the smallest details and also that they did things that were clearly just for their own amusement. That’s what I would do.

It was really interesting seeing how many people it takes to make movie mag-

ic, and seeing the actors and crew working together to get exactly what the director wanted. Finally, it was a wrap, and we were free to leave. We wandered around a little to see what else was going on before heading home.

Our family went back another night though, and we stood on the walkway out to the gazebo in the marsh to watch them film the scene when the boy falls in the water and the lead good guy jumps in to save his son. There were lots of people watching, but one thing I have learned being on set, or near set at least, is that spectators quickly learn when to hush and when they can chat, where they can stand and when they can can change their locations to get a better look.

When part of the pilot episode of the television show “Revenge” was being filmed on an Oak Island beach, it was quite a scene. There were a lot of people involved, and a lot of us spectators. We even took very quick turns getting pictures of ourselves sitting in the director’s chair when everyone was occupied elsewhere on the beach.

One of my favorite things to watch during filming is the star sightings posted

on social media. It seemed like Mel Gibson pictures were popping up on everyone’s Facebook feeds last year. “Safe Haven” filming created the same kind of social media buzz. Lead actor Josh Duhamel was seemingly everywhere in his down time, playing golf, posing with fans, and even sitting out on the beach for late nights with one of the turtle nest watch groups. It really says a lot about our community that people feel at home so quickly and want to do all the great things we get to do.

When “Safe Haven” was released, of

course there was a lot of press, and I remember reading an article in Rolling Stone that pretty much panned everything about it, even the setting. As I remember it, the writer claimed it was just unrealistic because places like that don’t really exist anywhere. We know they do actually exist. We know that we’re fortunate enough to live in one of those places, and I think it’s adorable that sometimes we get to share it with some really creative and fun people so they can do make their stories

Finding Flavor

One Potato, Two Potato, Sweet Potato

Herein the south it’s hard to imagine southern food without thinking of sweet potatoes. They are a staple crop we can find year-round, and they show up in sweet and savory dishes alike. We see them on our tables during the holidays in the form of candied yams, sweet potato pies, sweet potato casseroles with ooey gooey marshmallows on top, and even just plain ol’ mashed sweet potatoes. To me they are a memory of my Nana and a sweet “southern” goodness that I personally can’t imagine living without.

Have you ever thought about what a sweet potato is or where it comes from? How does it grow, where does it grow? And IS a sweet potato a yam? Is a yam a sweet potato? Or what? Let’s find out…

Sweet potatoes come in all different shapes, sizes, and colors. The orange sweet potato is the most common but there are also white and purple varieties. Did you know that, in fact, sweet potatoes

aren’t even really potatoes at all? They are root vegetables that are related to the morning glory flower. Historically, sweet potatoes came to us from South and Central America. In North Carolina, we grow more sweet potatoes than any other state in the nation, and most of them are grown in Eastern North Carolina.

A few fun farming facts:

•Sweet potatoes are grown from

cuttings called sprouts or slips which farmers will start in a greenhouse or in a field

•The sprouts are then transplanted to the field in May or June and it takes 90-120 days for a sweet potato to grow

•Farmers are harvesting sweet potatoes from August through November

•Once the potatoes are harvested, they are cured for 4-7 days at 80-85 degrees, which changes the starch to sug-

•They are then ready to be washed, sorted and sent to your favorite farmers market or grocery store

When you are shopping in the grocery store in America, orange-fleshed sweet potatoes will often be advertised as yams. The reason we tend to refer to them as yams is because in the 1930s, in the great state of Louisiana, farmers grew a new breed of deep orange flesh sweet potatoes and decided to market them as “yams,” and we have been calling them that ever since. As mentioned before, even sweet potatoes aren’t really a potato. Well, yams are no different. They are not a sweet potato, or a potato at all! Potatoes are a nightshade and are in the same family as peppers and tomatoes. Yams are in a different family — a plant family that includes grasses and lilies. Yams came from Africa and Asia, and are used primarily in Caribbean and West African cooking. They have a dark rough brownish grayish skin with a starchy white flesh that is not sweet at all. So the mystery is solved… yams are NOT sweet potatoes; but people will most certainly continue to call some sweet potatoes yams!

One of my fondest memories as a child was going to my Nana’s house. Upon arrival, the first thing I did — after I gave her a big hug and kiss of course — was to look on the table in her kitchen to see what kind of sweet baked good she had made that day or what she had stewing on her stove. One thing that stood out the most was her sweet potato pie. My Nana was a fan of the white sweet potato, potentially

because it was less sweet and paired well with sugar and butter for her pie.

Until yesterday, I didn’t have any idea how she made the pie. I went to my mom for advice. She told me that my Nana made her crust from scratch with nutmeg, then pats of butter on the bottom (a very important step), mixed mashed white sweet potatoes with sugar, milk, more butter and then topped it with cinnamon before baking. It was a simple, not overly sweet dessert delicacy that everyone in our family always looked forward to. Even though my mom claims that my Nana was not a big dessert eater, I would catch her on occasion having some sweet potato pie for breakfast.

Personally, I am not a big dessert eater either; I prefer savory dishes with sweet potatoes the most. I am a huge fan of a little sweet and a little spicy. I think that

sweet potatoes pair particularly well with pork, but I think they can be served on the side of almost any protein. They are also great in soups, breads, salads, used as thickening agents in sauces, and so on.

In a month that everyone is talking about corned beef and cabbage paired with soda bread and green beer or Reubens on rye, I like to think of my Nana on March 17, the day she passed away when I was in 7th grade. Instead of feeling sad in her absence, I prefer to honor her and thank her for all of the fond memories she gave to me. The cooking lessons, stories, tea parties, porch swings, and most importantly, for letting me sit in her lap and drive her car to the Best Way Grocery when I couldn’t reach the pedal. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate her memory than making and sharing a sweet potato pie with the people I love and the readers of this magazine.

On the next page, you will find three recipes which are very basic ways to use this wonderful root vegetable. The baked sweet potato can be used as a building block for lots of other recipes. I hope you enjoy them time and again.

The Basic Baked Sweet Potato

Contrary to what my mom thinks, you do not have to wrap sweet potatoes in foil to bake them.

Pre Heat oven to 375°

Line baking sheet with parchment paper or foil (you will thank me for this later)

Wash potatoes thoroughly removing any remaining roots. Choose potatoes that are similar in size to bake together.

Place sweet potatoes on baking sheet and bake 45-60 minutes depending on how large the potatoes are. Skin will be slightly separated from the flesh, a fork or knife should insert easily.

Enjoy immediately with a pat of butter, salt and pepper (and a little cayenne if you are like me)

Not my Nana’s Sweet Potato Pie

2 cups pureed sweet potato white or orange, approximately 2 medium potatoes (use white sweet potatoes if you want it less sweet, and use baked sweet potato recipe above)

½ cup pure maple syrup (do not use pancake syrup — you will be sure to be disappointed if you do)

½ cup dark brown sugar, packed

1 cup heavy cream

2 eggs

4 T. salted butter, melted

1 T. butter cut in small pieces to put on bottom of the crust

1 t. cinnamon

½ t. nutmeg

1 t. vanilla

½ t. salt

1 pie crust (if you don’t make your own, I recommend Pillsbury in the dairy case)

Pre Heat Oven to 425° with rack on bottom

Whisk or use mixer to blend all ingredients together.

Prepare pie crust and cut up 1 T. of butter and spread around bottom of the crust. Pour mixture into pie crust, sprinkle with a little cinnamon and nutmeg if desired and bake for 25 minutes on 425° (this will help brown the bottom of your pie)

Carefully remove pie from oven, center will not be set. Turn oven down to 350° and move oven rack to middle of the oven.

Immediately place pie back in the oven and continue baking 30-40 minutes. If crust begins to look dark, spray foil with cooking spray and lay across pie until it’s done.

Pie will be set in center and crust will be golden brown.

Cool on a rack for an hour. This pie is great warm or cold.

Pairs well with fresh whipped cream or vanilla bean ice cream. Keep refrigerated.

Ashley’s Baked Sweet Potato Bites

2 medium sized sweet potatoes peeled and cut into cubes

2-3 T. your favorite oil (I prefer to use avocado oil)

salt & cayenne to taste

brown sugar, lemon

Pre-heat oven to 425°

Bring 3 quarts of water to a boil and use 1-1 ½ T. salt to season water

Balance potatoes for 4 minutes and drain well, return to pot and over low heat stir for a minute to ensure potatoes are dry

Line packing sheet with parchment or foil sprayed with cooking spray

In a bowl mix the cubed sweet potatoes with oil until just coated, you don’t want too much oil it will keep them from crisping. Add ½ t. salt and 1/8 t. cayenne and toss.

Pour on baking sheet and bake approximately 25-35 minutes depending on size of cubes, stirring occasionally to achieve browning on all sides. When cubes are browned and tender return to the bowl and toss will a little more oil and additional salt and cayenne to taste. I like to sprinkle mine with a dark brown sugar and a squeeze of lemon. These are also delicious served with honey mustard or cinnamon butter. Serve with your favorite dish.

OPERATION MEDICINE CABINET

The 24th semi-annual “Operation Medicine Cabinet” drug take back event at Dosher Memorial Hospital is scheduled for Thursday, April 6, between 9 am and 1 pm. Local residents are invited to drop off unwanted and expired prescription medications at the hospital’s front entrance, where law enforcement then takes what is collected for safe incineration. One of the conveniences of this event is that it is designed so that you can “drive through and drop off,” without having to leave your car.

At Dosher’s last drug drop in October 2022, more than 800 local households discarded more than 15,000 expired or unwanted narcotic pills and nearly 2,300 milliliters of narcotic liquids.

Dosher welcomes the opportunity to provide this service to local residents. For questions about Operation Medicine Cabinet, call the Dosher office of Marketing

and Community Relations at 910-457-3900 or email ileneevans@dosher.org.

DOSHER FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS

The Dosher Hospital Volunteer Organization will be offering three $4,000 scholarships to graduates or graduation candidates from any high school in Brunswick County who are seeking to enter any accredited health profession. An application packet may be downloaded at Dosher. org/Volunteer underneath the area entitled Scholarship Grants Available, or, students may speak to a guidance counselor at their high school.

Applications must be received by J.A. Dosher Memorial Hospital, Attn:  Nursing Administration, 924 N. Howe Street, Southport, NC 28461 by April 30, 2023.

Plant Sales Coming Find Something For Every Gardener

CONTRIBUTED

Spring has sprung and and plants sales will be popping up like tulips during the coming months. From Encore Azaleas to Butterfly-friendly plants, everyone will certainly find something perfect to add a little beauty to the yard.

Gardeners can get a jump on spring planting by shopping at the Kiwanis 21st annual plant and flower sale scheduled for Saturday, April 1 from 10 am to 1 pm in the parking lot of the St. James Community Center.

Many landscape bushes, perennials, annuals, and herbs will be for sale, including the popular Encore Azaleas, which bloom twice a year. Pre-ordering (with delivery) is available by contacting Larry Trainor at ltrainor13@yahoo.com or (443) 253-7145.

Profits from the sale will support the many youth service programs the Kiwanis Club of Southport-Oak Island oversees for the children of Brunswick County. Visit SOIKiwanis.com to learn more.

The Brunswick County Extension Master GardenersSM Volunteer Association (BCEMGVA) will hold four Plant Sales in 2023 featuring different plants for each sale and offering a wide variety and the best selection for that sea-

son or theme. In 2023 BCEMGVA will present a series of plant sales focusing on plants suitable for containers, plants ready for spring planting, plants beneficial for pollinators, and plants for the fall season.

1. BCEMGVA is offering a Spruce-Up Your Containers Plant Sale on March 24, featuring colorful annuals, herbs, and greenery specially selected for containers that will brighten your entryways and outdoor spaces

all season long. In late March, many gardeners are anxious to get out in their gardens and start planting, but late season frosts can still harm tender plants and ruin gardeners’ hard work. However, it is a great time to engage your green thumb by sprucing up containers on the front porch and patio. These smaller gardens can easily be covered or moved to a protected location if late season freezing temperatures threaten our area.

2. April heralds spring and the BCEMGVA Spring Plant Sale returns on April 28. This popular plant sale features a large selection of blooming shrubs, perennials, and greenery that thrive in the Southeast Coastal North Carolina environment. This is our largest plant sale of the year with an emphasis on early blooming perennials, herbs, shrubs, and many Master Gardener favorites.

3. In conjunction with National Pollinator Week and just in time for the Monarchs, numerous butterflies, and pollinators, on June 22 the BCEMGVA Pollinator/ Native Plant Sale will feature Milkweeds, summer blooming perennials, and other critical pollinator beneficial plants celebrating the importance of pollinators in the food chain. This sale offers plants endorsed by Monarch Watch, the North Carolina Butterfly Highway, and the North Carolina Native Plant Society as critical to sustaining our butterfly and pollinator habitat.

4. Plans are underway a Fall Plant Sale in September. This plant sale is in the planning stage with date and plant list to be determined. This sale will offer fall color plants and plants suitable for fall planting. Visit bcmgva.org for the latest information, dates, and times for each of these sales. Plant lists for each sale will be posted on the website closer to each plant sale date.

Check bcmgva.org for updates or sign up for the Plant Sale email list.

Brunswick Civil War Round Table Meets

STORY CONTRIBUTED

Renownedhistorian and popular returning guest speaker Peter Carmichael will examine how Civil War soldiers endured the brutal and unpredictable existence of army life at the Tuesday, March 7 meeting of the Brunswick Civil War Round Table. The circumstances are revealed in his presentation, entitled, “The War for the Common Soldier: How Men Thought, Fought, and Survived in Civil War Armies.” With renovations completed, the meeting will return to Hatch Auditorium on Caswell Beach. Everyone is welcome.

Soon after the Civil War began, many felt the war would be shortlived. But as the weeks and months dragged on, soldiers on both sides began to realize there was no end in sight, creating extreme uncertainty and frustration about their future. So, how did these soldiers endure the brutal and unpredictable existence during the conflict? That question is at the heart of Peter Carmichael’s presentation. He believes the war forced soldiers to bridge the gulf between two competing impulses. “Sentimentalism” helped soldiers understand war is a series of hardships and sacrifices that could be endured through faith, courage, and patriotism. Yet their “pragmatism” guided soldiers desperately

seeking to survive with honor despite the filth, blood, and despair they actually experienced.

To best explain this contrast, Carmichael bases his thinking on close examination of the letters and records left behind by individual soldiers from both the North and the South. He identifies the totality of the Civil War experience – the marching, the fighting, the boredom, the exhaustion, the punishments, and the frustrations of being away from families back home who often faced their own dire circumstances. The phrase “war is hell” will clearly be emphasized in his dramatic presentation which is based on his insightful and soul-searching book, “The War for the Common Soldier,” which was the culmination of nearly ten years’ research.

Currently Carmichael is the Robert C. Fuller Professor of Civil War Studies at Gettysburg College. After complet-

ing his doctorate at Penn State University, he went on to teach at Western Carolina University, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and West Virginia University. He is a prolific author, holds seasonal interpretive positions at several National Park Service sites, speaks frequently to general and scholarly audiences, and has appeared on the PBS Robert E. Lee documentary for the American Experience series

and the popular TV show “Who Do You Think You Are.”

Registration for this meeting begins at 6:15 pm and the presentation starts at 7 pm. The visitor fee is $10 and can be applied toward the $25 annual membership dues. For more information about the meeting, becoming a member, or volunteering for this non-profit organization, please contact president John Butler at Brunswickcwrt@gmail.com, or call him at (404) 229-9425. Turning Coastal Blue

New Vendor in Southport Village Shoppes

Springtime is arriving early in Southport, along with a heavy dose of pine tree pollen and a cheerful little low country store in the Olde Southport Village Shoppes! The new store is full of coastal charm with a touch of shabby chic and a lot of love. Coastal Blue opens in early March in the back corner of 11th and Howe Streets. You can find various upscale, locally-handmade beach decor items to admire and purchase. Owner Kim Caggiano recently relocated to the Southport area and, on one fateful day, stumbled upon the opportunity to open the storefront her heart was searching for — a space to create her own work, offer it for sale to the public, and support other artists in the process.

When you walk into the store and meet Kim, you get an easy positive vibe from the motivational and uplifting sayings on many of her creations. Her welcoming smile greets and draws you into the stylish low country atmosphere. “My vision for Coastal Blue is to provide inspiration through my work,” she said. Even though her personal health struggles, Kim’s comforting voice and sweet disposition shine through. She

is inspiring to talk with, and her giving spirit shines through. “This past year, when I was diagnosed with cancer, I wanted to handcraft something special for my friends and family as a thank you for their support when they came to visit,” she said. “Coastal Blue is inspired by my love of all coastal decor, low country home style.”

As it often does, the act of creating actually aids in healing both physically and spiritually. It gives your mind a rest and a focus away from the trials of everyday life. Now Kim can easily create her work in a room at the store, so inventory will be changing regularly. “After my surgery, I found comfort and healing while creating and crafting different designs. When friends realized I was making them as part of my healing process, they began purchasing the shells as gifts for others. This is how ‘Coastal Blue’ came to life.”

Kim uses sustainably sourced shells and natural beads for her shell ornaments and prayer beads. Each one is elegantly made, and many focus on issues close to her heart. “There are almost 35 different designs for the scallop shell ornaments. There are a few shell designs for breast cancer,

autism awareness, and uplifting positive words are found throughout,” she said. “Blessing Beads with an oyster shell can be draped around a candle, displayed on bookshelves, hung on door knobs, or to accent your favorite photo frame.”

Now after only having her work for sale in person or on a website, Kim’s new adventure with a brick-and-mortar store is an exciting achievement. Her work is beautiful and impeccably made, with her attention to detail in every piece, and many are attractively packaged for easy gift-giving. Her work makes excellent gifts all year long, especially when you’re looking to give an inspiring gift of the ocean.

“All are handcrafted shells that can be used as an ornament or a perfect coastal home décor accessory. There are many different styles to choose from, including napkin rings, blessing beads, salt and pepper oyster cellars, gilded oyster candles, and ornaments. I am also happy to accommodate special orders and requests as well,” she said. “Each is handcrafted, stock is limited and changes daily. The edges are gilded in gold leaf, and a finished coat is applied for shine. Each shell is sustainably sourced, approximately 3-4 inches, and has subtle variations in shades and color. Straight from the ocean, there is

Kim has added a few other artists to her store, focusing on decorative items, and may include additional products later. You will also be able to find

glasswork, paintings, photography, original cards, and pottery.

Olde Southport Village Shoppes will also resume the monthly Artisans Markets on March 4, which will be a great time to come out and browse the shops and welcome spring back to our quaint little town.
