Bruce, Jill & Miranda Oakley Hello Southport Magazine readers,
My name is Bruce Oakley and I started as the new Southport City Manager on September 1. The move to Southport has been great and everyone has been so welcoming and helpful. It’s such a beautiful place with the friendliest people. I look forward to becoming more involved with the community as my family and I settle in here. Before coming to Southport, I was the Town Manger in Oak Ridge, NC for almost thirteen years. Oak Ridge is a suburb of Greensboro, which is where I was born and raised and where I resided while working for Oak Ridge. A lot of friends and family from the Greensboro area frequent Southport, so I will never feel too far from my roots. They all tell me how lucky I am to
be moving to such a special place and that they can’t wait to visit. My wife Jill and my daughter Miranda are just as excited as I am about relocating to Southport. Jill is a licensed real estate broker and is also excited about getting involved in the community. Miranda is a sophomore biology/pre-med major at UNC-Greensboro and hopes to volunteer at Dosher Hospital during her summer breaks. Please feel free to call, email, or come by City Hall and share any suggestions, concerns or questions you have with me. I will work hard with the Board of Alderman, the City staff, and the citizens of Southport to make sure it continues to be a great place to live, work, and play. Sincerely, Bruce Oakley

Ghostly Update! The article in last months issue called “Ghostly Tales” was based directly on the information in the book “Cape Fear’s Haunting Women” by Emily and Joseph Toone. The historic tale has been altered over time and we wanted to set the record straight with information from a direct relative of one of the women mentioned in the article. Letter to the Editor: The information that you used in your October 2017 edition entitled “Ghostly Tales” regarding the Thomas Mann Thompson, Jr. house and family was not correct. I feel it is important to correct this information for the sake of history. The Thompsons are my relatives. Thomas Mann Thompson, Jr. was a successful river pilot and famous blockade runner. He was never married to a Theresa Morse. He married Mary Elizabeth Mintz (Mary Eliza) of Shallotte before the Civil War ended and they had around 13 children nine of who lived to adulthood - Sally, Lily, Mamie, Emma, Thomas III, Lettie, Annie, Jimmie, and Laurence. His son, Jimmie, built the house on the corner of E. Bay Street and Howe Street that Jim and Margaret Harper purchased from his widow, Anna, in the 1950’s. Thomas Mann Thompson, Jr. built the red roof house with the widow’s walk in around 1868. Mary died in 1881 and he married Sarah Amelia Willard who helped raise his children. Thomas Mann Thompson, Jr. was born in 183, died in 1907, and is buried in the Old Smithville Burying Grounds. He was never lost at sea. His sister, Rebecca Thompson Gause, was my great-great grandmother. Thank you, Katherine Gause Hufham, Southport

November, the month of giving is here STORY BY LISA STITES

elping others brings out the best in people, and there are many giving opportunities that can really make a difference in Brunswick County. With so many natural disasters such as Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma and wildfires in California drawing much-needed support recently, national relief and religious organizations have asked for our help. With many worthy causes to support, it’s always good to know that our assistance is also put to good use on a local level. These charities work to better our communities in very different ways.

CURRENTS important than ever. Offering hope for domestic violence victims Hope Harbor Home has been offering around-the-clock assistance for victims of domestic violence and their children since 1988. The organization offers much more than shelter though. Volunteers provide transportation, help finding employment, housing, education, medical attention, counseling, court and legal services. “A lot of people, if they’ve been victims for a while, they’re likely to be isolated from people, work, money,” said Lynn Carlson, Executive Director of Hope Harbor Home. “They can be fairly removed from the world.” Carlson has worked with the group for more than 13 years. She said that the work she and the volunteers do is difficult and can be thankless, but that somehow, they find it in themselves to continue, even though they are now seeing a second generation of families needing services. “A lot of times we don’t know what happens to people when they leave,” Carlson said. “Some we do, some we hear back from a long time later. We have to remember that what we do there is plant seeds.
We don’t know when or if when those seeds are going to sprout.” WIth much support from the Brunswick County community, Hope Harbor Home tries to supply all clients in a year with a gift, provide school supplies for the schoolage children, do seasonal programs, etc. Recently, a women’s group from Southport Baptist Church provided makeovers, which Carlson said was so well received. “It’s just so nice to see their looks on their faces to do something fun and that’s just for them,” she said. “They get to see people that really care for them as people, not just cases.” The organization relies on the Hope Chest Thrift Stores, located in Oak Island, Holden Beach and Leland, for approximately 26 percent of the annual budget. “That’s really only our form of self sustenance. We never charge anyone for anything that we do,” Carlson said. Donations of clothing, furniture, and household goods are accepted at all three stores. Monetary donations, store gift cards and gas gift cards also help Hope Harbor provide services. Some community partners hold annual fundraisers to sup-
port the organization, such as a gala, golf tournament and bike rally. Check https:// hopeharborhome.org/ to learn more about fundraisers and volunteer opportunities. October was Domestic Violence Awareness month, and there is still work to do to make sure people receive the help they need. “Domestic violence is a crime,” Carlson said. “It’s not a family thing, it’s a crime. It wouldn’t be ok if it happened to you on the streets. It’s not okay if it happens to you in your home.”
mous donation led to the creation of Matthew’s Ministry. Today, more than 100 volunteers help the organization, which uses backpacks to send food home with children for the weekend. Matthew’s Ministry works with 13 schools in Brunswick County. At the beginning of the school year, volunteers collect brand new backpacks —
MATTHEW’S MINISTRY — FEEDING CHILDREN IN NEED
For children who don’t know where their next meal is coming from, Matthew’s Ministry can help fill in the gaps. What started with a simple prayer request in 2010 has grown to a program that provides food for more than 500 Brunswick County children every week of the school year. Southport resident Kristie Disbrow said she and her husband Jason wanted to do something to help when a teacher asked for prayers for a child who didn’t have enough food at home. That first anony-

CURRENTS 900 this school year — and fill inserts with food each week. The children bring the bags back on Mondays. Disbrow said they purchase food from the local food bank, and also use donations. They provide pasta and sauce, ramen noodles, granola bars, oatmeal, crackers and other items. Sometimes, social workers also ask the group for other donations when they are working with a specific family in need. “A lot of people we serve are the working poor, which means they are not making enough to meet their needs but making in too much to get assistance in another way,” Disbrow said. In Brunswick County, 27 percent of children ages 0-18 are food insecure, she said, which means they don’t know where their next meal is coming from. Once a month, volunteers gather at the Ministry building, at 8500 E. Oak Island Drive, to pack bags. There is a drop box for donations of money or food, which are always appreciated, Disbrow said. Glass containers are not allowed, however. The program costs approximately $100,000 each school year. Anyone interested in helping out should
check the website, www.matthewsministry.com, for more information. Disbrow stays in contact with similar organizations in other areas, as they share ideas and information. Though she has met her goal of bringing the program to schools across the County, she said the program will likely grow as needs in the County increase, especially with the number of seasonal workers living in the area. She said she is grateful for the level of support Matthew’s Ministry can rely on. “It’s working because we live in such a great place,” she said.
HELPING OTHERS THROUGH SONG
Members of the Brunswick Concert Band share a love for music, and they volunteer their time to entertain audiences with concerts a few times a year. They also take their desire to share their love of music to another level, by helping students who might not otherwise have the chance to learn an instrument. A new instruments can cost several thousand dollars. Though there are instrument rental programs available, many families can’t add the monthly payment to their
already-stretched budgets. The Band accepts donated instruments, and then loans them to students in Brunswick County. The Music Student Assistance Program (MSAP) began in 2009, and has placed more than 90 instruments with students. “A lot of people have instruments in their closets they haven’t played for 40 years and they don’t plan on it,” said Mary Helen Turek, publicity chairman for the Band. “We get them cleaned up and loan them to students who may not be able to pay for them.” Century Storage offers space for the instruments, and Leland instrument repairmen Jim Varno gets
them in working order. “We work with the (schools’) band directors to see where the needs are,” Turek said. The Band currently has almost 70 members, ranging in age from 13 to 87. Some are professional musicians, and some haven’t played in decades, Turek said. “We want to be a true community band. Being a true community band means we need diversity, so we have our students and adults with a range of talents and backgrounds. We love playing with the students. They can’t wait to get in and tell you about their week. The students are just awesome,” she said. The Band helps students in other ways as well. Members work with new music students at the middle school. In October, they also sponsored a trophy and volunteered at the South Brunswick High School Marching Band’s South Coast Classic, an annual band competition the high school hosts. The Band survives on donations and grants, and performs at concerts in the spring, summer and winter. The band also provides music for Brunswick Community College graduation and members have

Turek has been playing flute with the Band for about 10 years, and says her favorite performance is the Naturalization Ceremony, part of the annual July 4th festivities in Southport. LOOKING BACK Brunswick Inn
One of the oldest small businesses in Southport STORY BY: KASS FINCHER
P
ossibly one of the oldest small businesses in Southport is the Brunswick Inn on Bay Street. Its history is storied and rich, surviving many different owners, hurricanes and renovations, to still be viable today as one of our town’s most popular lodging destinations. The inn was first built in the early 1800s as the summer mansion for Governor Benjamin Smith, for whom the town of Smithville (now Southport) was named. After his death, another governor – Edward B. Dudley – lived there in the summer as well until 1848. At that time it was sold and converted into a hotel. In the mid-1800s, it was occupied by Dr. Walter Curtis, who oversaw the quarantine station and maintained his offices there in the daylight basement for 30 years. In the late 1800s it was renovated and reopened as the Hotel Brunswick, with nightly music and dancing in the ballroom. In 1901, the hotel earned one of two permits for a tavern on site. The other tavern was in the Pavilion on the waterfront. The days of “dry Southport” were over. A restaurant was added in the front of the hotel. In the 1940s the hotel was purchased by Eldridge and Sarah Arrington, who along with their daughter Stuart Callari’s family later, maintained it as a private residence for 50 years. The current owners – Jim and Judy Clary – purchased it in 1997, renovated and furnished it over several years, and reopened it as the Brunswick Inn Bed and Breakfast in 2009. Judy recalls those early years. “We used to go and stay at B&B’s all over North Carolina and we enjoyed the experience. When we bought this we didn’t know what we were going to do with it. We wanted to open an antique shop in the basement. When we moved in we didn’t have furniture. We had to furnish it completely. We would come on the weekends and work on cleaning the house and furnishing it. The only B&B at the time was Lois Jane’s so she would ask us to take her overflow. We didn’t charge much but it showed us how the business works. It was fun and interesting, meeting people from all over.” They made the decision to open the inn,
so they got permits from the city and the Board of Aldermen. When they opened for business, the inn offered three guest rooms and over 4800 square feet on the two main floors. Their website describes the interior. “The mansion has been carefully updated, respecting the historical integrity of this magnificent piece of architecture. The original heart pine floors, run plaster ceiling moldings, Southport bow trim, unique rotunda, louvered cathedral-shaped pocket doors, observatory and nine working fireplaces all remain intact.” Despite its loving care over the years, the inn has faced its share of challenges from Mother Nature. The hurricanes came and went, and many townspeople would gather in the inn’s basement with its twofoot deep walls to ride out the storms. Hurricane Hazel tore the roof off the inn in 1954. But it was always rebuilt and damages repaired. Today the inn operates yearround, with perhaps a two-month down time in late December and January, to give the owners a chance to catch their breath and prepare for the spring season. Guests come and go, with many repeat visitors coming back frequently. “We’ve had people come 13 years in a row and

stay with us,” Judy relates. “They look forward to the same breakfast, so I always do praline french toast on Sundays. We don’t have a sign, don’t want one; we get our guests through word of mouth, Facebook and the website.” Some of those guests have been memorable. Judy mentions one of their more famous visitors. “Charles Bronson stayed about a week with his wife and secretary to visit a friend in the area. Charlie would get up about noon and stay up late. He was usually the bad guy in the movies, but he was very quiet and shy here. When any lady came in the room, he would stand up.” She adds another memorable visit. “A couple came from Nashville – she was a psychologist and he was in the music business. They stayed a week, which is kind of unusual. They would be up all night, never came to breakfast. One morning she came down wearing black velvet and he came down in a speedo and cowboy boots.” Judy and Jim laugh about those they don’t want to come back. “We have the top six list who will never come here again. They were just people who didn’t care about anybody else. You just never know who’s going to walk in the door.” And you never know who’s going to lock those doors. The Clarys have a prankster ghost – Tony – who will sometimes throw the deadlocks when they leave the house. Tony was an Italian harpist who played at the inn in the 1800s, went on a sailing trip and drowned when the boat sank. “Everybody likes Tony,” Judy says. “No one has ever seen him. At night you will hear him walk four steps on the carpet in the rotunda or he’ll walk down the stairs four steps.” “Tony doesn’t like a lot of commotion. When they filmed a pirate movie here, there were a bunch of kids in the house.
After they left, I heard a crash. When I went to bed that night, the picture was off the hook and smashed on the floor. He throws a fit when there’s too much going on.” After that incident, Jim says Judy had a tough love conversation with Tony. “She started talking to him about what he better do and not do. She said this is the deal, or I’ll have you exorcised. He’s a prankster, he was only 19 when he died. He plays with jewelry, messes with lady’s underwear.” Apparently word got out about the inn’s prankster, bringing an interesting guest to the house. “This guy came because of the ghost” Judy says. “He drove up in a powder blue 50s-era hearse. He was a ghostbuster. He had a special camera and got Jim to go with him to the cemetery. They saw five orbs – spirits, I’m told. He also found a few in the house.” Whether you believe in ghosts or not, the evidence is there. The Clarys say that to run a B&B, you have to be a people person. And in their house, you need to be accommodating to spirits as well as guests.

Capt. Newton’s Inn
B&B in Southport full of Southern Charm with a hidden luxury addition STORY BY AMI BROWN
I
was invited into the home of Lisa Fosbury, owner and operator of the Capt. Newtons Inn, B&B, in dowtown Southport for a behind the scenes tour of their personal living space - and recent addition to the historic home. Greg French with Southport Custom Exteriors did the 1600 SF addition and wow was I ever impressed.
You may be wondering why would the B&B need an addition? Well the answer is pretty simple. As B&B owners are required by law to live on the premises, Lisa and her husband were basically living out of one room on the main floor, only about 12’ x 14’. So this large addition allows them privacy and room to get away from “work” and relax. One of the main challenges Greg told me is that with the limited space on the lot, they had to utilize every inch to achieve exactly what
Liss wanted. He called in the surveyor twice to be sure all the property lines were correct before the build. The pool was already there, so to get supplies into the back was also a bit of a feat. Not to mention - the B&B was open, so it was business as usual in the front. Greg and his 74 year old father, Ken, performed almost all the construction work themselves. Of course they had some help from electricians, plumbers and painters. Ken hand laid all the bathroom tile, something I know
he must be proud of (it’s gorgeous!) Greg said one of the other challenges was to get all the roof lines to match up in the back. (notice in the photo above) Another thing that was intentional is that Lisa did not want the addition to look like an addition. She wanted to maintain the historic look of the Inn, without being obvious. When you look at the front of the house, you don’t see anything out of place. It looks like it has always been there - and that’s the way it’s supposed to
Southport Magazine 2016-2017 SOI Chamber Small Business of the Year Winner
be. Even the pitch of the brand new double car garage, matches the pitch of the Inn. Greg’s philosophy is to treat customers how you would want someone to treat your parents. He also says he lives and does business by the “Golden Rule”. It’s plain to see that Greg cares about his customers and the final product. Every inch of the addition is finished to the highest quality in detail. With Greg’s superior craftsmanship coupled with Lisa’s eye for style and

design, this addition sets the bar high. I’m not sure how Greg could possibly top this one. Lisa’s favorite place is the back yard pool, not because she worships the sun - quite the opposite actually. She enjoys the pool in the evenings, and it’s therapeutic and relaxing. One of my favorite pieces in the addition finds it’s way into the master bath. An old gun cabinet was restored and turned into a cute lighted shelf with mesh door. It’s fits perfectly in between the double vanity sinks for storage.
Another feature I could really use is the enormous walk in closet. It has built in racks for shoes and enough space for at least 4 wardrobes. If you are in the market for a builder, Greg’s work is impeccable and his work ethic impressive. He also only works on one job at a time - making the job personal. He is always available to his customers and makes it his mission to “make it happen”. This also happens to be one of the reasons why Lisa chose him for the addition. He said he could get it done, when other’s weren’t as confident.

The exposed wood beams are a nice touch, making the kitchen cozy and architecturally interesting and dramatic. It pulls the eye upward and makes use of the space nicely. I love this hidden cubby, beside the fridge. The place you usually loose your broom - now hides it securely and for easy access, slides out on demand. It closes up to look like the rest of the cabinet doors, perfect and brilliantly functional. Who doesn’t love a rich solid wood, sliding barn door. This makes perfect sense when you want to save space. But it’s also fashionable, functional and not to mention a work of art. The dark wood stain matches the wood floors. This hides the laundry room in the hallway, so it keeps the space open and tidy with just a quick slide to the left. Left: This quirky little wire sculpture sits above the laundry cabinets, as to look out the window overlooking the pool. Lisa got this on one of her travels, and it’s quirky, cool and full of texture and life. This is one of my favorite pieces in the house.

Tell me what is different about your center and other similar ones? Southport Healing Arts Center offers multiple healing therapies and classes from several individual practitioners. Clients can choose from many different classes (yoga, pilates, barre, etc) and therapies (Counseling, Massage, Reiki, CranioSacral Therapy, Reflexology, etc) to meet their individual needs. Something that makes our center and practitioners really special is their desire to ensure the client receives the support and care that they need. Which may mean referring a client to another practitioner within our building or our community, who can better meet their needs. We work as a team to create an atmosphere of unity and joy. Clients have often stated” this space just feels really good when I walk in.” Who are all the people involved and can you tell me a little about their background? medicine but wasn’t very familiar with reflexology until a case of plantar fasciitis led her to a reflexologist. The experience taught her more about plantar fasciitis than any doctor or physical therapist had told her. One visit pretty much fixed the problem, and Mary Margaret was sold on the true benefits of the therapy. At that point she attended school to become a reflexologist. She opened her practice, Sole Reflections, in Wake Forest North Carolina in the fall of 2013 and expanded to Southport last fall. She currently spends time in both locations, travelling between the two with her two furry travel companions. A session of reflexology is very relaxing and therapeutic. It’s another way to help the body heal itself. A session may include foot, hand, ear or facial reflexology. Mary Margaret has studied a wide variety of reflexology techniques, including maternity reflexology and medical reflexology. She recently finished a class with Jesus Manzanares,MD where she learned a much more scientific approach to this wonderful modality. Scheduling is very flexible but it is necessary to make an appointment. HSA accounts will typically pay for a session (insurance is not accepted at this time.) Tell me about the “ Natural Healing” process. Our bodies were designed to naturally heal themselves, as you can easily witness when we get a bruise or a cut. This process takes place without any conscious thought being given to the situation, and can take place for any and all necessary healing. However we live in a world and society that often places extra stress and strain on us, physically, mentally, chemically, etc. In such cases the natural healing process may need support and encouragement to maintain homeostasis, or balance. By incorporating holistic therapies and practices into our daily lives we can provide an environment that supports the body’s natural healing abilities and enhance quality of life for the body, mind and spirit.

Heroes’ Chili Cookoff Have some chili and help your community STORY BY KASS FINCHER
T
his year’s Hometown Heroes Chili Cook Off will offer some new twists but will also share the same community spirit, not to mention awesome chili recipes! It’s coming to the Oak Island Moose Lodge on November 11 from 12:30 – 3:00 PM. First responders, veterans and local nonprofits will face off to share their secret chili concoctions and help raise money for a great cause. If you haven’t enjoyed this wonderful event, this year is the time to try it. It’s the flagship fundraiser for the Southeast Brunswick Civitan Club’s Apple Project, which helps students in Brunswick County’s Exceptional Children classrooms. The money raised is used to purchase iPads and educational software to help students with attention deficit disorder, autism, Asperger syndrome or other conditions that make traditional learning difficult to achieve. Jonathan Peele, chair of the event, describes its inception. “About seven years ago the club set out to find a way to help children, so we met with a teacher from an EC classroom in the Brunswick County Schools. We were surprised what we learned. We thought we would be dealing with building wheelchair ramps or something like that. But she described new methods of teaching children with autism or Asperger syndrome where traditional teaching methods were not effective. She said they were having a lot of success with new educational apps that are available on iPads. They’re designed almost like games – they’re interactive, there are colors and sounds, and the children are better able to focus on that lesson. We learned that what they really needed is technology.” After meeting with the EC Director and Director of Technology with the school system, the Civitans developed the fundraiser concept. Peele continues, “We started with fire departments in that first year. Then we added all first responders and military veterans. Oftentimes these people work behind the scenes, so this event gives them a chance to meet people in their communities and vice versa.”
He goes on to describe the new twists this year. “We’re inviting nonprofits for this year’s event. That gives them the opportunity to share what they do with the larger community and create more awareness for their activities.” The Cook Off will also offer a new cash prize - $1000 for the winning People’s Choice recipe. They have always offered a Judges’ Award and a People’s Choice award, but this is the first time the winner will receive cash. Most of the participants – first responders and nonprofits – have to raise money themselves from time to time, so the cash award will be helpful to their own organizations. The general public is invited; a $5 entry fee is the only cost. The cooks pay no fee

to participate. Most of the funds raised come from sponsorships; there is also a silent auction. Each year about 350 people attend – it comes at a time of year when there’s a nip in the air and everyone is ready for some chili, spicy or not. “It’s interesting,” Peele relates, “the People’s Choice winner is usually different from the Judges winner. At the door you get your ballot and you circle your winner. The school system takes the ballots and figures the winner. The judges do blind taste tests; they don’t know whose chili they’re tasting. “The winners don’t want to share the recipes. But to be honest, most are family recipes or they don’t know what they put in it – a little of this, a little of that. We’ve had all kinds of recipes. We’ve had chicken chili with a white sauce – not the traditional thing you think about with ground beef and red sauce. We had venison chili – they called it roadkill (joke) – we’ve had all different types. That’s what makes it exciting – everyone has a different take on what kind of chili they like.” There’s a lot of friendly competition. “We have many repeat participants,” says Peele. “I think the Southport Fire Department has won the most times; they have a target on their backs.” The club’s goal is to raise enough money to purchase 20-30 iPads this year. To date
they have placed one in 80 different classrooms. With 100 EC classrooms in Brunswick County, they feel confident they can get the remaining iPads needed with this year’s event. Then in future years they will start providing multiple iPads in the classrooms. The club members also hand deliver the iPads, along with a $100 voucher for educational software that the teacher can purchase. Peele explains how the deliveries are meaningful not just for the students but for the club members too. “There have been some touching moments in those deliveries – a few eye-opening things. One classroom we went to had all children with nonverbal communication. When one child picked up the iPad, he immediately starting communicating – texting, talking – which is how he interacted at home with his own iPad. His parents hadn’t wanted to let him bring it to the classroom; they were afraid he might lose it or it might get stolen. So using the classroom iPad he was able to communicate at school now.” It’s a fundraiser that’s fun and gives back on so many levels. Be sure to come out and be a part of it!

FAMILY An Epilepsy Journey Beating the odds with Epilepsy STORY BY RHONDA TILL
M
y son Riley is turning 28 this month. He’s also celebrating 3 1/2 years seizure-free. The seizures began when he was 7. It’s been quite a ride for our family. Riley is my youngest of 3. He has a sister, Katie and a brother, Tyler. His dad, my husband, is Randy.
I wish I had known more about epilepsy and seizures when Riley’s started, but it’s just not something you know much about until it affects you or someone you know. The one seizure I had witnessed prior to Riley’s was in my teens, a person lying on the ground unconscious with her body shaking uncontrollably. I now know that seizures are not one size fits all. I know that seizures have different characteristics depending on the part of the brain they originate from. I know some seizures can be controlled and some cannot. In Riley’s epilepsy story, it sounds like it was just the two of us. It wasn’t. This was a family affair and it involved all of us but
we were always supportive of one another. I had the guilt of not being there for my other 2 children as much as I would have liked at times. Luckily, we had a wonderful extended family and the best friends we could ever ask for helping out at every turn. The biggest worrier was probably his big brother. The seizures were a part of all our lives and we dealt with in the best way we could. Riley is a strong-willed person. The seizures rarely held him down. He played with the neighborhood kids, he went on sleepovers. It’s really crazy to look back at how everyone around him just dealt with it. He would go to a friend’s house to spend the

night. I would pack his medicine and if he had a seizure, he knew what to do and so did the people around him. During Riley’s last EMU stay and his surgery, Riley had a fantastic nurse, Michael, that the whole family loved. He and Riley had a lot in common and we’d sit in the hospital room and talk. About a year and a half after the brain resection, Riley went to an Epilepsy Surgical Reunion where Michael was recognized for his dedication and the impact he’d made on his patients. Afterwards, Riley decided he wanted to follow in Michael’s footsteps and
become a nurse. Riley is now a CNA working on the neurology floor at Baptist Hospital. Sometimes he works in the EMU and enjoys talking to other epilepsy patients. I’m a very proud mama. This is Riley’s ‘Epilepsy Story’… Riley started having seizures when he was seven years old. This was 1997. We didn’t know they were seizures. I called them ‘giggle fits’ because it was like, out of nowhere, he would start giggling. He couldn’t help it. He would slap his hand over his mouth to stop. We all thought he was laughing at

FAMILY something. He wasn’t, it was just happening. They progressed slowly into some other little movements and verbal tics. I had no idea what was going on so I took Riley to his pediatrician. Riley had an episode in the exam room but the doctor didn’t notice it as being anything unusual. However, he did refer us to a neurologist. Over the next several months, we saw 4 different neurologists. The seizures had stopped prior to seeing the first doctor so all he had to go on was my description what was happening. He seemed to think that Riley may just be a little hyperactive. The seizures returned and we saw a second doctor. An EEG was ordered. He found nothing abnormal. Riley did not have a seizure during the EEG. The seizures were increasing. This doctor thought maybe Riley was faking the episodes for attention. I won’t even go into my reaction but we did not see this doctor again. We were referred to another neurologist. This doctor wanted to do a sleep study, which we did. This resulted in being referred to an ENT. This neurologist felt Riley’s tonsils and adenoids were interfering with him not getting enough oxygen to the brain. Tonsils and adenoids were removed. Seizures continued. I sought out another doctor. An EEG was done. He was given a different drug. We still were not given a diagnosis. His seizures increased. The decision was made to admit him to the hospital. The episodes continued until Riley was anesthetized for a PET scan. The anesthesia broke the cycle. The seizures dramatically decreased. After a week in the hospital he returned home on medication having 3 to 4 episodes a day and they eventually stopped for awhile. Riley went through third and fourth grade with with very few seizures. Riley started fifth grade and his teacher noticed some problems with concentration. He began having more and more episodes, mostly at night. I spoke with the doctor. His medication was altered. The episodes increased. I was in touch with the doctor almost daily. Then I was told by the doctor to give it some time. I did not feel this was acceptable. I don’t remember exactly how, I might have just opened the phone book. I could have searched on the computer. But I ended up with the phone number of the Neurology Department at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital. I called and by some miracle found myself on the phone with a nurse. I told her my son had been having some sort of episodes, off an on, since he was 7. I asked her if someone there could please help. I asked if I could get an appointment or if someone could just look at his medical records and give me an opinion. We got an appointment for a few days later. While there, Riley experienced an episode. For the first time, this doctor used the word ‘epilepsy’. The doctor asked if I would be willing to have Riley admitted to the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU). Luckily, a bed was available and we went straight there.
PHOTOS FAR LEFT: We celebrated his one year seizure-free anniversary by skydiving LEFT: Hooking up the depth electrodes a day after implantation surgery
The first thing they did in the EMU was put electrodes on Riley’s head for an EEG. Then he was taken to a room where his seizures would be videoed. They began gathering information quickly with Riley’s seizures being so frequent. Other neurological tests were done and in five days he was released with a diagnosis of frontal lobe epilepsy. He went home taking two medications and the seizures lessened considerably. By January (2001), the seizures were increasing again. The doctor tried various medications without success. School started in late August. Riley started school but his seizures were getting worse and he was seizing at school After a couple weeks, the decision was made for Riley to stay home. During this time, Riley had a cluster of seizures that ended with a grand mal seizure. This was the first time he had lost consciousness and as scary as things were up to this point, I became unraveled. An ambulance was called and Riley was in the hospital for a few days. It was around this time that the doctor mentioned admitting Riley to the EMU again. He wanted find out if Riley was a candidate for surgery to possibly remove the focal point of his seizures (a brain resection). If not, maybe a Vagus Nerve Stimulator (VNS). He was admitted shortly before Thanksgiving and the EEG did indeed show a focal point. He would need to be admitted again at a later date for more extensive testing which would involve a surgery. On January 8, 2002, Riley was admitted to the EMU. Grids with electrodes were placed directly on his brain on January 9, 2002. It was a 7 hour procedure. The monitoring began but the information wasn’t as good as they wanted. The placement of the grids needed to be changed. This required a second surgery lasting 4 hours. The monitoring began again. Information was gathered and we waited. Several days later, we met with Riley’s doctor. After a meeting of a team of specialists; Riley’s neurologist, other neurologists, neurosurgeons, epileptologists, etc., it was decided that the odds were not in Riley’s favor for a resection. A VNS was recommended. Riley was taken to surgery a third time to remove the grids and for the VNS implantation. On January 24th, Riley returned home
from the hospital. He returned to school and caught up with the rest of his class. For the next several years, Riley did well. He did have some seizures but they were manageable with the VNS and medication. When the battery of the VNS would begin to die, his seizures would increase and he would have outpatient surgery to get a new battery. This was done a few times. In 2013, the seizures increased and became much more intense. Riley’s medication was adjusted, the VNS was checked and was fine, medications were added. Nothing was helping. An EMU admission was suggested and Riley was admitted. After several tests; EEG, MEG, SPECT, etc., it was suggested that we try to find that focal point again. There was a new procedure that could provide more precise readings than the previous grids. At this point, Riley is an adult. The decision was not mine to make so we collaborated. The statistics being given us by the epileptologist was a 30% chance of a 50% reduction in seizures. Those don’t sound like great odds but Riley made the decision to move forward with the new procedure, a Stereo EEG. On March 26, 2014, Riley checked in for surgery. The neurosurgeon implanted approximately a dozen depth electrodes into the area of the brain where other tests had showed the seizures were originating from. Hours later, he was taken to his room. Monitoring began the next day. When the team of doctors gathered this time to review the findings, a resection was recommended. A little anxious but also relieved and hopeful, Riley returned to surgery on April 2 to have the electrodes removed along with the focal point of his seizures, a section of his right frontal lobe. After surgery, Riley was taken the the ICU to be monitored closely. We watched and waited. No seizures. No deficits from the surgery. Late the next day he left the ICU for a regular room. The day after that he went home. Three years and six months later, no seizures. He remains on a low dose of one medication.
WORDS FROM RILEY
First and foremost, going through with the brain resection was absolutely the best decision i’ve ever made. Even with the odds
Southport Magazine 2016-2017 SOI Chamber Small Business of the Year Winner
stacked against me, in my eyes there was no other option. As I read over everything my mom has written, I don’t remember most of it. All I recall is never letting epilepsy control my life. Sure, it set me back in certain areas but it never defined me as a person. Which is kind of ironic that despite that, it’s changed the course of life. After meeting so many incredible nurses and doctors what helped me along the way, I can’t imagine spending my life any other way than trying to help others in similar situations. Epilepsy sucks. It would have been very easy to give up and pity myself but I never did. I think it’s important that I share my story with others and remind them to be strong and not let it control who they are.

HEALTH Baby Boomers Beware 1 in 3 are at risk for Hep-C STORY BY LESLIE RESCHLEY
W
ere you born between 1945 and 1965? If so, take note. An asymptomatic illness may be lurking in your body. In fact, 1 in 30 “Baby Boomers” are positive for this illness translating to approximately 75 million Americans. What is this disease you ask? It is the Hepatitis C virus.
Hepatitis C is an often asymptomatic liver disease caused but a virus named Hepatitis C. Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver. Thus far, there are 3 types of Hepatitis viruses-A, B and C. Because of the lack of symptoms associated with Hepatitis C and the estimated number of American adults who unknowingly have the disease, this article will focus on Hepatitis C or Hep C as it is commonly called. Acute symptoms of Hepatitis C typically occur from 1-3 months after exposure and last from 2 weeks to 3 months. These symptoms may be fatigue, fever, muscle aches, nausea and/or jaundice. In fact, many people have been exposed to the Hep C virus and their immune system was able to clear the disease. However, approximately 55-85% of the people exposed go on to develop a chronic disease of infection but it is unknown to them as
they have no symptoms! In fact, years can pass as the liver becomes increasingly damaged moving through cirrhosis or scarring to liver cancer and finally liver failure and death. Hepatitis C is not routinely tested on physical exams. How does Hep C occur? It is a blood borne disease meaning this virus is transmitted through blood exposure. It is not spread through food, water, casual contact or even the sharing of food utensils or drinking from the same container as an infected person. It is most commonly found in those who received blood transfusions before 1992, received transfusions of clotting factors (a blood product) before 1987, have a piercing or tattoo with a contaminated instrument, injected or inhaled illegal drugs or were a health care worker exposed to the blood through a needle stick etc.
50 Southport Magazine / NOVEMBER 2017 / www.SouthportMag.com
Initially attributed to the drug use scene and the sharing of dirty needles for injection, this disease has been stigmatized. However, recent studies show though that there is no reason for this stigma. In fact, some theorize that the disease began as far back as World War II with blood transfusions and injections that occurred with unsafe medical practices. Thus, many people born in the range of 1945-1965 may have received a blood product that was tainted with Hepatitis C as the virus was not even looked for in the blood products. In addition, medical syringes may have been reused or improperly sterilized leading to further contamination to others. Although not routinely screened for as a part of a normal medical physical, there is currently a movement across the USA for people especially of the “Baby Boomer” age group to obtain a test to check for presence of the virus. This is done through a blood specimen. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control recommends testing in the age group born between 1945-1965 as they are FIVE TIMES more likely to be infected by the Hep C virus. Further studies may be needed if the test is positive to determine if liver inflammation (cirrhosis) or cancer is present. Because it is a disease that has no symptoms until it is advanced,
testing is encouraged even if there are no symptoms. Medical science has recently developed anti-viral medications with the goal of treatment a cure for the disease. In fact, it is estimated that 95% of the people treated can achieve a cure. Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B currently have vaccines for prevention but as of yet, there is no approved Hepatitis C vaccine. Please contact your medical professional if you may be at risk for Hepatitis C. Early detection through a simple blood test may save your life and prevent complications!

ART BEAT Set Sails with John
John Keiffer is turning heads with his artistic and functional custom sail shades STORY AND PHOTOS BY CARLA EDSTROM
B
eing a vocalist who is also somewhat of an introvert is kind of a contradiction in terms. I wasn’t ever that little girl who was always performing for her family. Don’t get me wrong, I do love to perform and singing behind a microphone feels very natural to me. But meeting people one on one is bit of a challenge for me and takes a lot of me pushing myself into a social mindset.
I really do own that shirt that says I love my dog and like 3 people, but to be fair, my dog is pretty awesome. And I do love people, but I also really love my alone time. After taking a break from singing professionally or otherwise for several years, I was really missing it and realized I was past due to get back where my heart was pulling me. So a couple years ago, I started forcing myself to attend music events in the Southport area so I could meet people and get a feel for the music scene. This was really, REALLY out of my comfort zone. Like miles out and no land in sight. But I ended up meeting many wonderful new musician friends and I learned a great lesson. You cannot find your dreams if you stay inside your comfort zone. One of those friends is John Keiffer. Fortunately, he doesn’t share the same introvert qualities that I have. He came right up to me, introduced himself and told me I was in the right place and that I was now family. As I wandered into the Yacht Basin Eatery months later, Keiffer met me as I walked in and turned me around to see his creation. It was an installation of huge sail canvas shades that he made and placed over the outdoor stage area. It was seriously beautiful! I thought it was so creative, using the form and functionality of providing shade and protection from the elements and also artistic design making it perfect for a restaurant on the our beautiful river. Being a lifelong artist and musician, John Keiffer’s sail shades are a testament to a man who could easily be called an artist craftsman but also a renaissance man who has experience in a wide range
of career fields. He started his own home improvement business in high school, and stayed in the building industry on and off until 1994. He also was a career Firefighter/Paramedic and an adjunct Professor in Paramedic Emergency Medicine in Prince Georges County, Maryland. His huge resume also includes being a Youth Minister in New England, and Town Commissioner in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. It was there that he and his wife Bonnie saw a need to help promote artists, so they began an art festival. His love for art is also evident in his Southport home, where he and Bonnie have a wonderful art collection. “I did some visual art in the first few years of college (1972-76), but didn’t begin to pursue visual/graphic art until the mid 1980’s, concurrent with beginning residential design work for my construction clients,” Keiffer explains. “I began to more actively pursue visual arts (primarily painting) upon my retirement from the fire service. I began working with exterior fabrics several years ago after I constructed new cushions for my sailboat.” Keiffer came up with the unique idea for using sail canvas to make shades when he was trying to come up with an idea about a shade for his own house. “We had gone to look at those bamboo roll up shades, but you can’t find real bamboo shades anymore. They are all plastic,” he explained. “This was about the same time they had the Sailing World Cup in Australia and I saw the Sidney Opera House on the news, and it dawned on me to use something with fabric. But once I started drawing out the design, I got the idea to make it look

JOHN KEIFFER STANDING BESIDE SOME OF HIS SAILS
“Because I used to be a builder, I always enjoyed the process of design, and figuring out how to cut all the pieces and assemble them and what it’s all going to look like together, “ like a fleet of sailboats. And that was my first attempt at shades at our house.” Keiffer’s clients are immensely satisfied with his work, and also his strong work ethic. “It’s not cookie cutter,” explains Kathy Simmons, who hired Keiffer to make custom shades for the breezeway at her new home on Oak Island that look like a sailboats. “He came over, took pictures, and he came up with the designs. Then he sent them to us to take a look at, and gave us choices in fabrics depending on what we wanted to do. And the workmanship and creativity is solid. The detail and stitching and curves in the right places, the right lengths and widths, we have just been thrilled,” said Simmons.
“Because I used to be a builder, I always enjoyed the process of design, and figuring out how to cut all the pieces and assemble them and what it’s all going to look like together, “ said Keiffer explaining his process. “I take pictures of all the area surrounding and put them down graphically and add the sail shapes to it so I can get a good view on paper of what it will look like. Instead of painting a little picture and adding context and depth to a painting, doing something like architectural design and making the sails installation is kind of cool because the canvas is a lot bigger. You have constraints, but you have more room to be creative,” explains Keiffer. His love for art is also evident in his Southport home, where he and Bonnie have a wonderful art collection. Keiffer still finds me in the middle of a crowd for a hug and introduces me to other musicians and artists regularly. He has a giant caring heart and will go out of his way to help anyone. He is truly a gift to Southport and our art and music communities as a whole. Originally from Bethesda Maryland, Keiffer and his wife Bonnie have made Southport their home since 2010. You can contact Keiffer directly at josakeif@gmail.com for more information about his canvas work and hand crafted sail shades.

CHEERS 3 Cheers for Pumpkin Beers
The low down and expert advice on the tastiest gourd inspired beers just in time for Fall. STORY AND PHOTOS BY JEFF STITES
B
eer is a simple thing—water, malted barley, hops and yeast. The Bavarians decided to codify that definition of beer with the Reinheitsgebot, known to us Americans as the German Beer Purity Law, way back in 1516.
One has to wonder if this law was in response to a similar set of circumstances as we have here today, with brewers putting whatever they happen to cross paths with that day in their brews. We have everything from honey beers and berry beers to coffee beers and jalapeno beers. It gets to be too much sometimes. I can see where the old Bavarian king was coming from. I too generally prefer my beer to be beer-flavored. But I have a soft spot for pumpkin beer. Maybe it’s my Halloween birthday, maybe it’s my love of pumpkin pie, maybe it’s just a bit of going with the flow, but I find the seasonal influx of pumpkin beers, usually flavored with cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves or allspice, to be a welcome sign of autumn. I’ve sampled seven pumpkin and spice infused brews for you this month:
My Take: This is Ballast’s Piper Down Scottish Ale with pumpkin and spices added. I’ve never had Piper Down, but I’ll be looking for it. It’s delicious. Trouble is, it’s a bit too hearty for the pumpkin to come through at all. I did get a nice whiff of pumpkin, but couldn’t really taste any at all. I’m not upset though, because the ale itself is top notch.
SOUTHERN TIER BLACKWATER SERIES WARLOCK IMPERIAL STOUT 10% ABV 40 IBU
The Label Says: “Brewed With Pumpkins and Natural Flavor” “Contains: 2-Row pale malt, caramel malt, black malt, munich malt, pureed pumpkin, magnum hops, sterling hops, natural pumpkin spice flavor” My Take: This is a great Imperial Stout,
BLUE MOON HARVEST PUMPKIN WHEAT 5.7% ABV 16 IBU
The Label Says: “Ale brewed with real pumpkin and spices” My Take: This was my introduction to pumpkin beers many moons ago, and I still enjoy it very much. It doesn’t taste particularly pumpkin-y, but the spices (nutmeg in particular) come though loud and clear. It pours a nice amber color and the spice just seems to fit in really well with the toasted malts and wheat base. It’s simple, but it works.
BALLAST POINT PUMPKIN DOWN 5.8% ABV
The Label Says: “Scottish Ale with Pumpkin” 56 Southport Magazine / NOVEMBER 2017 / www.SouthportMag.com
but there is much more chocolate and coffee flavor than pumpkin. I am beginning to think that in these darker beers, the pumpkin lends more to the feel, the thickness almost, than it does to the flavor. It seems to make the beers robust, which is a good thing. Hooray pumpkin.
on the lighter side, a bit darker than the Dogfish Head though. Let’s hear it for the Old North State, Foothills Brewery in Winston-Salem has a winner!
DOGFISH HEAD PUNKIN ALE 7% ABV 28 IBU
The Label Says: “Pumpkin Ale featuring cinnamon and habanero chili peppers for just the right amount of heat.” My Take: Think chili peppers are a good thing to put in your pumpkin beer? No, no you don’t. And you’re right. This beer is the lightest in color and beer flavor I’ve tested so far. The pumpkin is undetectable
The Label Says: “Our fall favorite, full-bodied brown ale is brewed with real pumpkin, brown sugar, allspice, cinnamon & nutmeg” My Take: I’m not so sure about the “brown ale” part, it’s much lighter even than the Blue Moon, but this is another fine brew. Punkin is lighter and more carbonated than the others I’ve tried so far. Still not much pumpkin flavor, but the cinnamon comes through and gives this brew a nice warm finish that feels just right for the autumn.
NEW BELGIUM VOODOO RANGER SPECIAL RELEASE ATOMIC PUMPKIN 6.4% ABV 10 IBU
COTTONWOOD PUMPKIN 5.3% ABV 5.2 IBU
The Label Says: “This dry ale uses cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and ginger brewed with real pumpkin and a blend of North American and British malts to give Mom’s pumpkin pie some serious competition. A fall favorite skillfully brewed by Foothills.” My Take: Skillfully brewed indeed. This is the first real pumpkin flavor I’ve detected in a beer and it really works well. The pumpkin is subtle, but it’s there and blended with the spices and moderate carbonation producing a truly delicious beer. It’s Southport Magazine 2016-2017 SOI Chamber Small Business of the Year Winner
Suddenly, it all becomes very clear 3-D mammography brings everything into focus
and, to be honest, so is the beer. This is a liquid that is neither refreshing nor interesting enough to make you not care that it isn’t refreshing. To be fair, if chili pepper beers are your thing (and that makes you weird, but I’m not judging) this might appeal to you. The heat from the pepper hits you as an aftertaste a second or two after you’re swallowed an otherwise bland brew. My son suggested that maybe this could be an ingredient rather than a drink. You might be able to marinate your meat in it for barbeque, or maybe make a sauce. I don’t know. It has to serve some purpose, but as for me I’m pouring it down the drain.
Our mammo team: Renee Walters, Ashley Rauth, Tammi McGlone, Wendy Perretta
Through a series of multiple images, 3-D mammography provides a much more detailed picture of the breast. This improves detection of
NEW HOLLAND BREWING ICHABOD PUMPKIN ALE 4.5% ABV 26 IBU
possible cancers by up to 40%, allowing for earlier treatment.
The Label Says: “Ichabod combines malted barley and real pumpkin with cinnamon and nutmeg in a delicious and inviting brew. After dinner, try it with your favorite dessert.” “Pairings: Roasted poultry, root vegetables, peanut sauce, and carroway” My Take: Ichabod Ale smells like Thanksgiving. It’s a nice amber color and a little on the cloudy side. It is the second beer I’ve tried that has a noticeable pumpkin flavor. The pumpkin is complimented by some cinnamon spice that really makes me think the label has a good idea; this WOULD be a great after dinner beer. It’s also a good before dinner beer. I imagine drinking one during dinner wouldn’t be bad either. It’s a nice ale, nicely tuned to the autumn season. I am NOT pouring this one down the drain.
At the same time, it reduces the number of false-positive readings, reducing unnecessary anxiety. A free gift for patients while supplies last.
