CURRENTS Celebrate National Seafood Month For local fishmongers, it’s all about getting fresh, local seafood onto plates.

any of Brunswick County’s seafood retailers and restaurants are part of Brunswick Catch, a local seafood recognition program. The goal of Brunswick Catch is to “sustain the livelihood and heritage of the Brunswick County seafood industry,” according to the website, www.brunswickcatch.com. The group utilizes public education and promotion to increase the demand for locally harvested seafood among residents and visitors, with a long term goal of making Brunswick Catch seafood a recognized brand throughout the eastern United States, the website states.
Participating retailers and restaurants display a “Brunswick Catch” sign, so consumers can easily see where local seafood is available. It’s not just a philosophy, but a way of life for Potter’s Seafood in Southport’s Yacht Basin and Haag & Sons Seafood on Oak Island. Jon Haag has owned the seafood market on Oak Island that bears his name since 1994. He is also currently Director of the Brunswick Catch Board, and is passionate about the cause and the job he does. Haag said he has built his business on selling local fish, but said too many regulations and the difficulty of maintaining clean water for fish nurseries are really affecting the industry. “The Yacht Basin used to be full of boats,” he said. A couple of those boats are run by a family with a log history in the fishing industry. For five generations, since 1899, the Potters have been fishing and selling seafood in Southport, even before the Yacht Basin was dug. “We catch as much as we can ourselves, we also have other Southport fishermen that unload their catch with us,” Potter said. They sell a lot of snapper and grouper and do some inshore fishing when they can, for flounder and trout. “We were part of the group that founded Brunswick Catch,” Royce Potter said. “It’s important to support our local fisher-
men, just as we do our local farmers. Local food is healthier and supports the local economy.”He and wife April wanted to help newcomers and visitors better understand the fishing industry. “They see the boats, they sit in restaurants and they think all the fish came from there,” he said.”They assume they’re get-

ting fresh, local stuff.” Potter’s staff also participate in numerous area events and camps, as a way to support the community but also to help educate the public. The fishermen work with the Maritime Museum’s summer programs, lead a rope-tying session at the annual Wooden Boat Show in Southport, and

With such dedication for promoting local seafood, what’s the go-to dinner at a fisherman’s house? For these fishermen, the answer was the same, though they have very different ways to prepare it. Shrimp is an affordable seafood that’s an easy pick for dinner, and it’s also an ingredient they recommend for cooks new to seafood dishes. It’s also very versatile, Potter said. “Think Bubba Gump,” he said. Haag said with as much as he has to charge for fish, shrimp has become the truly affordable option. Higher quality frozen seafood has become more readily available, and all too often, fresh, local seafood is considered a luxury purchase. Haag has a somewhat unusual way of cooking his shrimp, although he said he just likes it steamed. It’s what he adds to the water that makes it different. He adds

olive oil, balsamic vinegar (sometimes white balsamic vinegar), Swampfire (seafood boil seasoning) and apple butter. Yes, apple butter. He said the spices used in apple butter really make the shrimp delicious. Potter likes his shrimp sauteed and served over rice with spinach and mushrooms. Fresh shrimp should have a mild odor and firm meat. They’re not slippery, and retain their natural color, according to the the Brunswick Catch website. Steer clear of shrimp that are bright pink or red, or that suffer from black spot, a sign of age or poor handling. When shrimp are cooked, they have red/pink shells and meat with a red tint. The Brunswick Catch site has lots of tips for picking out fresh seafood, lists of local retailers and restaurants that participate and more on the history of the effort to promote buying local. Potter’s advice for those who want to add more seafood to their diet is to always buy it fresh. Fresh fish should actually not smell “fishy,” Potter explained. He also said it’s important to not overlook it. Potter and Haag offer more ways to keep tabs on the catch of the day than just stopping by the store. Potter’s has an email list that’s used to tell customers what the boats are bringing in and what time they’ll be there. And Haag & Sons has a Facebook page used for sharing recipes and pictures of delectable seafood meals. Catching and selling fish takes a lot of time and energy, Haag said. THE PERFECT SHRIMP COCKTAIL
Bring a large pot of water to a rapid boil, add a pinch of salt and a splash of olive oil to the water. Add in cleaned, shelled and de-vained fresh shrimp. Boil for about 90 seconds. Take out and strain immediately, chill under cool water. Put in a large bowl, toss with a drizzle of olive oil, a splash of fresh lemon juice, sea salt, pepper and Old Bay Seasoning. (To taste) Chill in the fridge or cover with ice cubes for about an hour. ENJOY! Easy Cocktail Sauce: 1/3 C of Ketchup
1 Tsp Lemon Juice
Dash of Hot sauce (Horseradish) Dash of Paprika
Dash of Garlic Powder - or minced garlic
1 TBL of Worcestershire Sauce A drop of mustard if you like Mix well, chill and serve!

Awareness & Early Detection Key to Survival The facts, figures & what you need to know about Breast Cancer STORY BY AMI BROWN
F
or 2017, The American Cancer Society’s estimates in the United States: About 252,710 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in women. About 63,410 new cases of carcinoma in situ will be diagnosed (CIS is non-invasive and is the earliest form of breast cancer). About 40,610 women will die from breast cancer. These numbers are staggering! If you know more than 8 women, you probably know someone that has been or wil be diagnosed with Breast Cancer in their lifetime. This topic is very close to Southport Magazine, owner, Kris Beasley is a survivor.
According the the American Cancer Society, early detection is key to early detection, effective treatment, and increased survival chances. There is no prevention for Breast Cancer, and no definitive cause. There is however lots of studies taking place, new treatments and early screenings to disgnose women at risk. There are also genetic links that researchers are studying and hopefuly one day will understand and lead to a prentitive medicine,
procedure or cure. I turned to the experts to answer some common questions about this disease that effects so many women.
WHAT IS BREAST CANCER?
Breast cancer starts when cells in the breast begin to grow out of control. These cells usually form a tumor that can often be seen on an x-ray or felt as a lump. The tumor is malignant (cancer) if the cells can

grow into (invade) surrounding tissues or spread (metastasize) to distant areas of the body. Breast cancer occurs almost entirely in women, but men can get breast cancer, too. Cells in nearly any part of the body can become cancer and can spread to other areas of the body. WHERE DOES BREAST CANCER START?
Breast cancers can start from different parts of the breast. Most breast cancers begin in the ducts that carry milk to the nipple (ductal cancers). Some start in the glands that make breast milk (lobular cancers). There are also other types of breast cancer that are less common. A small number of cancers start in other tissues in the breast. These cancers are called sarcomas and lymphomas and are not really thought of as breast cancers. Although many types of breast cancer can cause a lump in the breast, not all do. There are other symptoms of breast cancer you should watch for and report to a health care provider. It’s also important to understand that most breast lumps are not cancer, they are benign. Benign breast tumors are abnormal growths, but they do not spread outside of the breast and they are not life threatening. But some benign breast lumps can increase a woman’s risk of getting breast cancer. Any breast lump or change needs to be checked by a health care provider to determine whether it is benign or cancer and whether it might impact your future cancer risk.

HOW DOES BREAST CANCER SPREAD?
Here are a few: •
Breast cancer can spread when the cancer cells get into the blood or lymph system and are carried to other parts of the body. The lymph system is a network of lymph (or lymphatic) vessels found throughout the body. The lymph vessels carry lymph fluid and connect lymph nodes. Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped collections of immune system cells. Lymph vessels are like small veins, except that they carry a clear fluid called lymph (instead of blood) away from the breast. Lymph contains tissue fluid and waste products, as well as immune system cells. Breast cancer cells can enter lymph vessels and start to grow in lymph nodes. Most of the lymph vessels of the breast drain into: • • •
Lymph nodes under the arm (axillary nodes). Lymph nodes around the collar bone (supraclavicular and infraclavicular lymph nodes) Lymph nodes inside the chest near the breast bone (internal mammary lymph nodes)
BREAST CANCER SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS Knowing how your breasts normally look and feel is an important part of breast health. Finding breast cancer as early as possible gives you a better chance of successful treatment. But knowing what to look for does not take the place of having regular mammograms and other screening tests. Screening tests can help find breast cancer in its early stages, even before any symptoms appear.

The most common symptom of breast cancer is a new lump or a mass. A painless, hard mass with irregular edges is more likely to be breast cancer, but could also be tender, soft, or round. They can be painful as well. Since there are so many different kinds of lumps, it is important to have any new mass or lump or breast change checked out by your doctor. Other possible symptoms of breast cancer include: • • • • •
Swelling all or part (no lump is felt) Skin irritation and/or dimpling Breast or nipple pain/sensitivity Nipple retraction (turning inward) Redness, scaliness, or thickening of the nipple or breast skin • Nipple discharge (not breast milk) Sometimes a breast cancer can spread
to lymph nodes under the arm or around the collar bone and cause a lump or swelling there, even before the original tumor in the breast tissue is large enough to be felt. Swollen lymph nodes should also be checked by a health care provider. Although any of these symptoms can be caused by things other than breast cancer, if you have them, they should be reported to a health care provider so that he or she can find the cause. Because mammograms do not find every breast cancer, it is important for you to be aware of changes in your breasts and to know the signs and symptoms of breast cancer.
CAUSES OF BREAST CANCER
Scientists do not have a clear answer yet. But studies continue to uncover factors and habits, as well as inherited genes, that affect breast cancer risk.

Several studies are looking at the effect of exercise, weight gain or loss, and diet on risk. Studies on the best use of genetic testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations continue at a rapid pace. Scientists are exploring how common gene variations (small changes in genes that are not as significant as mutations) may affect breast cancer risk. Gene variants typically have only a modest effect on risk, but when taken together they may potentially have a large impact. Potential causes of breast cancer in the environment have also received more attention in recent years. While much of the science on this topic is still in its earliest stages, this is an area of active research. A large, long-term study funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) is now being done to help find the causes of breast cancer. Known as the Sister Study, it has enrolled 50,000 women who have sisters with breast cancer. This study will follow these women for at least 10 years and collect information about genes, lifestyle, and environmental factors that may cause breast cancer. An offshoot of the Sister Study, the Two Sister Study, is designed to look at possible causes of early onset breast cancer. Southport Artists Stamping out Hunger in Brunswick County Eat the Soup, Keep the Bowl The Associated Artists of Southport prepare for Empty Bowls Project - making 1200 original works of art! October 17th. STORY BY AMI BROWN
F
or months local artists at Franklin Square Gallery have been working making original pottery bowls, hand painting them, glazing them and firing them to be ready for the big fundraiser on October 17th at Trinity Methodist Church. Dozens of local restaurants are donating soup for the event. Your $20 donation will get you a delicious bowl of soup, and a one-of-a-kind hand made bowl. All proceeds benefit Brunswick County - Southport / Oak Island Interfaith Food Pantry, Matthew’s Ministry and Brunswick Family Assistance.
Empty Bowls, founded in Michigan 26 years ago, is an international project which was conceived as of as a creative way to help fight hunger. Local artists donate bowls they have created, local restaurants donate soup, and businesses donate paper products and beverages. The bowls act as a reminder that many
people around the world have empty bowls and empty stomachs. The goal is to raise money and awareness to feed the hungry. Our motto is “Eat the Soup, Keep the Bowl” and help stamp out hunger in Brunswick County. In Southport, Empty Bowls takes place every four years. This will be our fourth

Empty Bowls Event. Please join us on October 17 th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church. For $20, event goers will receive a unique ceramic bowl, soup of their choice, bread, beverage and musical entertainment provided by musicians from the Brunswick Concert and Big Band.
Our members have been working for months to prepare for this chartable event. Our potters have been throwing and glazing bowls, painters have been painting and kilns have been firing. Several paint gatherings have been held at Franklin Square Gallery where our members have been hand painting bowls, truly making them one of a kind. We even had a four year old local artist, Lilly help with the painting. Each bowl is handcrafted by potters from Brunswick, New Hanover and Horry Counties. While AAS organizes this event, local restaurants also play a major role. We thank them for without their support we could not hold this event. Proceeds from this event will benefit three area food banks: Southport-Oak Island Interfaith Food Pantry, Matthews Ministry and Brunswick Family Assistance.

Boats, Pirates and Halloween Fun October is full of family friendly events

KING MACKEREL TOURNAMENT
The 39th Annual U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament is right around the corner. This year’s tournament will be October 5th – 7th at the Southport Marina. The U.S. Open is one of the largest king mackerel tournaments on the East Coast of the United States. In 2016, the tournament attracted 464 boats and paid out over $250,000. The Tournament has an all cash guaranteed prize structure that is not based on participation numbers. The tournament pays 55 places in its primary prize category including $25,000 for the largest king mackerel. Thirty-five sponsors such as the Primary Sponsor, Southport Marina and

Bump in the Night... The Haunting Women of Southport still roam these parts STORY BY: KASS FINCHER
I
n a town as old as Southport, with a somewhat storied maritime past, it’s no wonder that tales of ghostly sightings contribute to our local folklore. Stories about the spirits of captains, sailors, soldiers and pirates are to be expected, but less is known about the lovely ladies haunting our region.
In their book, Cape Fear’s Haunting Women, Emily and Joseph Toone share many stories of women still hanging around our area, either in spirit or through their earthly legacy. In proper journalism parlance, their stories are “unverified,” but that doesn’t mean they aren’t true. Several of the stories are set in the Civil War era. It was an important period for our region because the Cape Fear River was a major thoroughfare for supplies to the Confederacy. Blockade runners raced in the dark of night past Union boats anchored outside the mouth of the river. Drama and danger became a daily experience for men on both sides of the war, and their women shared in it.
THE CONJURE WOMAN
In 1863, the Confederate fortifications on the Cape Fear were strengthened with the construction of Fort Holmes on what is now Bald Head Island. Slaves from the mainland were brought over to provide the labor – men to build the fort and women to do the cooking. They were all zealously watched by the overseer to ensure none of the slaves died or escaped. One of the slaves, dubbed the Conjure Woman, was known for her “magical” potions, brews and teas. She claimed to have been a voodoo priestess from the backwoods bayous of Louisiana. Her former master’s wife and son had died after drinking one of her potions. The Conjure Woman claimed it was not her doing; it was simply their souls desiring to leave this earth. Known on the island for her magical powers, the Conjure Woman was once approached by another slave woman holding her baby, who begged her to help her fam-
ily escape. Following the Conjure Woman’s instructions, the woman, her husband and baby arrived at midnight to drink a special potion. Afterward, they were to run through the woods and head to a spot near the water where they could see the stars. After arriving at the right location, the three looked up at the stars and began to shake violently. Holding the baby between them, the three watched horrified as their feet began to transform into roots, digging into the soft soil. Within minutes a beautiful live oak tree emerged, with three trunks entwined as if in an embrace. Fulfilling their souls’ desires to never leave Bald Head Island, the tree still stands today. And the Conjure Woman never left either, transforming herself into a stately Palmetto tree.
THE THOMPSON WIDOW’S WALK
Theresa Morse met the handsome blockade runner captain Thomas Thompson at her produce stall in Southport one sunny day during the war. They married not long after and moved to the beautiful home on Bay Street that boasted a cupola over the widow’s walk – a finishing touch Captain Thompson had added to protect his bride from the elements as she watched for her husband’s boat. But one stormy night, as Theresa watched for his boat, a cryptic message appeared on the cupola window. “Again I’ve come to take what’s dear. From those who challenge the river of fear. Take heed and learn from this storm that brings fright. Or I’ll take again on a distant night.” Theresa’s heart sank – she knew this meant Thomas wasn’t coming home. Just

Jasmine, Daisy, Camille and Rose were happy youngsters who enjoyed playing on the river’s shore across from the fort, where their father kept a protective eye on them from his office. But great sadness had transformed Durney when all four of his beloved daughters caught diptheria and died. Five years later, he was no longer the ambitious, motivated leader he once was. Contemplating suicide, he walked one evening to the Grove, where he had enjoyed many happy times playing with his girls. As he held a gun to his head, suddenly four apparitions appeared. They were his daughters. They reached out to him and begged him not to do it, to remember how they had happily lived their lives and to please not end his own.

Durney had a moment of ambivalence, recalling how he had tried to honor their memory by planting four live oak trees in the Grove. The girls laughed and agreed it was their favorite spot. Just as they turned to admire the trees, a terrible shaking began; other trees all around the Grove were uprooted. Durney tried to grab something to hold onto, but he fell down and the gun went off. The earthquake of September 1, 1886 took Avery Durney’s life. His spirit, however, joined his wife and daughters, and they can be seen at times walking hand in hand in the Grove, just under the Four Sisters live oaks.

Through her father’s maladies and his quest for health, Eileen learned from a very young age that alternative and complementary methods may be used to find relief when western medicine has not brought any. Serves: 6 servings INGREDIENTS 6 mini pumpkins 1 C uncooked quinoa 2 C vegetable broth 1 Tbsp plus 2 tsp olive oil 8 oz sliced button mushrooms 1 C chopped leeks 1 clove minced garlic
⅛ tsp rosemary ¼ tsp thyme ⅓ C dry white wine ½ tsp salt ⅛ tsp black pepper Order Ingredients Powered by Chicory INSTRUCTIONS Preheat the oven to 400º F. Meanwhile, cut the tops off of 6 mini pumpkins and remove the seeds. The seeds can be discarded, but they can also be reserved for roasting, much like larger pumpkin seeds. Lightly brush olive oil over the insides and

KITCHEN outsides of the pumpkin bottoms and tops and season with salt and pepper to taste. Bake for 25-30 minutes with the tops on the pumpkins. The pumpkins are done when the inner flesh is tender. After placing the pumpkins in the oven, make the quinoa. First rinse the quinoa well and then combine 1 cup of quinoa in a sauce pan with 2 cups of vegetable broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook covered until all of the liquid is absorbed. This will take 15 to 20 minutes. Meanwhile, sauté the mushrooms and leeks in 2 teaspoons of olive oil for about 5 minutes, or until tender. Add the garlic, rosemary, and thyme to the pan and cook 1 more minute. Next, add the white wine and cook until the wine is mostly evaporated. Season with the salt and pepper. By now the quinoa should be done cooking. Measure 2 cups of cooked quinoa into the skillet with the mushrooms and leeks. Stir to evenly combine. Remove the cooked pumpkins from the oven and spoon the quinoa pilaf evenly into each pumpkin. Consider garnishing with a little parsley for added color. Serve immediately.
ROASTED GARLIC SAGE PESTO PUMPKIN SOUP WITH SPICY FRIED PUMPKIN SEEDS
INGREDIENTS 1 in large sugar or pie pumpkin cut half and seeds removed and reserved (plus 4 small ones if you are making the pumpkin bowls) 1 tablespoon olive oil salt and pepper 6 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 small shallots chopped 1 teaspoon fresh thyme chopped 4 cups chicken broth 1 cup coconut milk + 1 cup water 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup pinch of crushed red pepper flakes Sage Pesto 1 clove head garlic 1 cup fresh parsley 1/2 cup fresh sage 1/4 cup shelled pistachios 1/4 cup olive oil 1/4 cup crumbled blue cheese if you do not like blue cheese sub feta or parmesan 1/4 teaspoon pepper Fried Pumpkin Seeds 1 tablespoon coconut milk 1 tablespoon flour reserved pumpkin seeds from above 1 teaspoon chipotle chili powder
1/4 teaspoon brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon pepper lots of salt to your tasting Order Ingredients Powered by Chicory INSTRUCTIONS Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Cut your pumpkin in half or into fourths and reserve the pumpkin seeds for later. Place the pumpkin on a baking sheet and rub the pumpkin with 1 tablespoon olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Chop off the top portion of the garlic head to reveal cloves. Peel any excess paper/skin off from the bulb of garlic. Pour about a teaspoon of olive oil on top the garlic cloves and cover with foil. Roast both the pumpkin and garlic together on the same baking sheet for 45 minutes, or until the pumpkin is fork tender and the garlic golden brown and soft. Remove from the oven and allow everything to cool five minutes. Squeeze garlic out of the paper skin into a small bowl and mash well with a fork, set aside. Grab the pumpkin and add it to a food processor (or mash extremely well) and puree with 1 cup of the chicken broth, puree until completely smooth. Heat a large pot over medium heat and add the butter and shallots. Saute the shallots until soft, about 5 minutes. Add the thyme and cook another 30 seconds. Add the pumpkin puree, remaining chicken, coconut milk, water, cayenne, nutmeg, maple syrup and crushed red pepper. Bring the soup to a low simmer and simmer 15-20 minutes. While the soup cooks make the pesto. Add the roasted garlic, parsley, sage and pistachios to the bowl of a food processor. Pulse until finely chopped and then stream in the olive oil. Add the cheese and pulse a few more time until combined. Season with salt and pepper.
Upcoming issues of Southport Magazine To fry the pumpkin seeds. Add the reserved pumpkin seeds to a bowl and toss with 1 tablespoon coconut milk and 1 tablespoon flour. In a small bowl combine the chipotle chili powder, pepper and brown sugar. Place a skillet on the stove top and set to medium heat, add the olive oil. Once the oil is hot, add the pumpkin seeds into the pan, but be careful! Stir the pumpkin seeds around in the skillet with a spoon or spatula continuously until they expand and start to brown. Once the seeds are browned remove from the skillet and place on a paper towel to drain. Toss with the chili powder and a good pinch of salt. Taste and season accordingly. To assemble the soup, ladle the soup into bowls (or your roasted pumpkins) and top each bowl with a dollop of pesto, a sprinkle of pumpkin seeds and if desired drizzle with coconut milk. Start slurpin! To make the roasted pumpkin soup bowls. Remove the tops of the pumpkin and scoop out the seeds. Rub the insides of the pumpkins with olive oil, salt and pepper. Place on a baking sheet and bake for 20-30 minutes or just until soft to touch but not falling in.

SAVOR Ports of Call Bistro

I
f there was ever a business that followed the “think globally, act locally” mantra, it would be Ports of Call Bistro in downtown Southport. The international menu reflects dishes from around the world; the actual ingredients are often sourced locally. In celebrating “the world on your plate,” the staff at Ports of Call Bistro seeks each day to deliver a unique, eclectic experience in fine dining.
When Bistro founders Jake Pfohl and Ray Acayan visited Southport for the first time in 2005, they were struck by the beauty, culture and community spirit our town offers. As New York City residents, they had always enjoyed the diversity and variety of their neighborhood bistros and the cultures they represented. That experience inspired them to consider opening their own restaurant, and by 2011 they came to Southport and did just that. Both the owners bring many world travel experiences to their cuisine concepts. Acayan was born in the Phillipines and moved to New York as an adult to work in various financial institutions. Pfohl traveled the world extensively for 35 years and worked for several non-profits, mostly in the public health arena, with a focus on water supplies and sanitation. He also worked for City Harvest, a non-profit in New York that saves over 200 million pounds of food from restaurants, grocery stores and farmers’ markets and delivers that food to over 1200 soup kitchens. The owners’ love for cuisine from around the world translates to wonderful selections on the menu at the Bistro. The two chefs – Joseph Stolz and Gregory Feltz – trained at Le Cordon Bleu, the largest culinary program in the world with schools on five continents. They create the seasonal menus that are built around local ingredients. Some of the most popular entrees include the short ribs, chicken paella, chicken francesa and pan-seared mahi. The tapas menu is a favorite as well, with mouth-watering items like Korean wings, fried oysters and Turkish beef kabobs with tzatsiki sauce. Pfohl describes some of their newer of-

We’ve done three of them now and will probably offer another soon. It’s usually a four-course meal, more exciting than your typical fine dining experience. The chefs combine different ingredients for a unique result. They recently made an avocado dessert – a creamy flavored ice cream with chocolate.” To round out their chef’s dinners, the Bistro recently searched for a local vineyard with which to partner. They found a small estate winery in the Yadkin Valley – Jones von Drehle Vineyard and Winery – that produces excellent classical dry French wines exclusively from its own grapes. Always searching for local sources for their cuisine, the Bistro works with Carolina Farmin’ and other local fish and produce providers. All of the Bistro’s specials and upcoming events are updated on Facebook each day. And most Wednesday evenings feature live music. Recent bookings have included the duo of Jay Kilman and Carrie Schauble, who also play Sunday brunches on occasion. The Bistro was the location for a scene in the Safe Haven movie filmed here in Southport, with actors Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel enjoying an intimate dinner
there. Director Lasse Hallstrom ate there many times as well; the Bistro chefs were happy to prepare his favorite vegan meals. Maps from all over the world adorn the walls and tables. And one wall houses glassware, pottery and other items for sale – all collected from the owners’ travels. In summing up how they view their niche, Pfohl relates that their world experiences define the concept, but their people create the result. “It’s all about exploring other cultures through food. But we also try to create an ambiance that’s enjoyable. It’s important that our servers be themselves, let their personalities come through to create a friendly atmosphere. When paired with excellent food, that’s what makes the experience enjoyable.”

GHOST WALK Ghostly Walk through Southport
Old Southport Tour Company Enchants Visitors with Historic Ghostly Walk STORY BY AMI BROWN
I
f you want to learn a bit of Southport history, have fun, and maybe get a little scared, I highly recommend the Old South Tour’s Ghost Walk with Katie. Last Friday night I had the pleasure of joining in with more than twenty tourists, all from Concord, NC. More specifically, a Sunday School group from Parkwood Baptist Church, attending a conference on Oak Island. And this wasn’t their first time on the tour!
If you are a resident of Southport, then I’m sure you have seen Katie Compton-Boyd. You know the beautiful young woman that walks through town wearing a black mourning dress reminiscent of the Victorian period. Whittler’s Bench is the meeting place - 8pm is the magic witching hour to start the adventure. I showed up a few minutes early to do my interview before heading into the darkness of a haunted tour. Katie arrived in a cute little convertible, fully dressed in her evening wear - ready to go. As I watched the crowd gather, she is definitely a bit of a celebrity. Photos , selfies and lots of questions by passers-by. You can tell she completely loves what she does. And she’s been doing this for almost 15 years. She started Old South Tour Company back in 2004, and loves every minute of it. Katie said she had the idea when she needed to get a Summer job. She didn’t want just any job, but one that meant something. She loves folk-lore, history and story-telling. She’s got a knack for it too. She majored in History, Oral Interpre-
tation and Southern Literature. Seems like she does have the perfect job. “I wanted to do something for the whole family, so they are not just sitting around. I also wanted to create something a grandfather could do and enjoy along side his 10 year old grandchild”, she tells me. “Story-telling is a dying art, so many stories are lost to time. There was no keeper of the flame in Southport.” Katie has created a walking tour of Southport, to include folk-lore, stories and lots of history. She really knows her stuff! She has lived here her whole life too, a true native. She brings history to life with a bit of a twist. She incorporates ghostly tales with history and makes it really entertaining. The half mile walk through Southport is fine for all ages. The tour keeps you on the flat sidewalks or grassy areas. There are no hills or steps to worry about. I would recommend bringing a flashlight (I used my phone light a couple times). But she carries a lantern for an authentic experience. I was excited to do this tour, so were the twenty - plus tourists in town. I

even had the Mayor of Trails End Kentucky - Eddie Middleton in our group. II think he may be a bit of a celebrity back at home. He was also a former member of the church that had come for the conference as well. The tour takes just over an hour or so depending on how many questions might pop up. It was a hot night, but there was a cool breeze as we got closer to the waterfront which was nice. We started out the tour heading up Howe Street and turning into Franklin Square Park. Katie is quick to tell you that “Franklin” is NOT Benjamin Franklin as most people assume. She tells the story of how the rock wall came to be and some other pretty fascinating facts about the park. The shadows of the huge Live Oak trees play with your sense of reality, and out of the corner of my eye, I kept seeing movement, imagination or was

it my ghostly neighbors? There are about 7 or 8 stops on the tour and one of the most exciting one was the Old Brunswick Jail House. When we got there the spot light was on. It decided to turn off as we approached. Katie said this happens all the time. It’s not a motion sensor light, but it seemed to have a mind of it’s own. Although when we were at a distance - it was fine. Not until she started the ghostly tales, did it start to misbehave and flicker. It continued to blink randomly as she spoke. As we left the area, it stopped and was solid again. Was this a coincidence? Maybe.... but it did make the entire tour group chatter about it as we walked away. I don’t want to spoil any part of this experience so I don’t want to give you any details of the stories - that’s Katie’s job. I would definitely recommend the tour, for locals, tourists, kids of all ages and adults. The most uneasy I felt is when we went to the Old Smithville Burying Grounds. I already mentioned it was a really hot and clammy night.. that is until we stopped by the fence at the graveyard. All of a sudden it felt a bit cooler... the air was still... and a weird sense that someone might be watching us.
The Restless Spirit World of Southport seems to enjoy having a haunted tour...and let’s hope they continue to play along nicely!
Katie proceeded to tell of the hauntings here and how many people on tours have caught ghostly images with their cameras at the grave sides. She has seen the ghost of a women here many times. And she warned us that if she starts running - we better do the same. The uneasy feeling was just enough to make the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Katie did end the tour on a good note and story - about the River Pilots. So that should keep any bad dreams at bay for anyone. I thoroughly enjoyed this tour and will be bringing guests back next time for sure. Thanks Katie!

Mary Anne Russ, the mother of one of the current owners Kim Anne, started Southport Realty in January 2001 after working in real estate for many years in Southport. Mary Anne retired in 2007 and sold Southport Realty to the current owners, Kim Anne Russ and Pamela Frandano. The current owners follow her vision of providing personal service and community involvement. 3. Education is a fundamental building block for your agents. Tell us more.... We pride ourselves on having a wonderful group of agents that come from a variety of backgrounds. We have agents with specialized knowledge in local historic properties; construction, commercial, investment and land just to name a few. We frequently rely on the expertise of our team to meet the individual needs of each client. In addition, most of our agents have one or more designations ranging from SRES, Senior Real Estate Specialist to GRI, Graduate Realtor® Institute. 4. As a Southport resident, I see more and more lots for sale downtown with custom cottages being built upon them. Is this a trend in the market that excites you? Yes! The new homes that are being built with respect to Southport’s historical architecture and charm enhance our downtown for residents and visitors. It’s a big part of our thriving downtown. It’s also exciting to watch many of the historic homes being restored to their former glory. The people buying downtown lots are bringing progress, but it hasn’t taken away our historic charm. 5. What does the future of Southport real estate look like from where you sit? One of the biggest challenges we’ve faced in recent years is a lack of inventory. More people desire homes than we have available. Prices in the Historic District of Southport trend higher because of this. Fortunately, the Southport area offers a wide variety of communities at different price points. That is why we see growth coming from the 211 corridor, Boiling Spring Lakes, and Oak Island where inventory is steadily increasing. 6. In your opinion what is the single best improvement that a homeowner can make to increase the value of their home? A desirable kitchen is number one on most buyers’ lists. Experts agree, improvements in the kitchen increase the value of a home. From a real estate listing perspective, first, de-cluttering and cleaning inside and outside yields results. Second, simple improvements such as a fresh coat of paint, where needed, make it easier for buyers to envision themselves in your home.

BIZ Q & A 7. Are you a Southport native? If not, what drew you to this area and what drew you to the neighborhood you call home? Kim Anne enjoyed a small town childhood growing up in the Historic District of Southport. Pamela relocated here 14 years ago to work in real estate and raise her children in a small town. They both live a stone’s throw from downtown and love living near the Cape Fear River! 8. Rentals: Either seasonal or long term, do you carry these in your real estate portfolio? Yes, we manage over 300 long-term residential and commercial rentals throughout Brunswick County. We also manage several vacation rentals in Historic Southport. One trend we have seen increase in recent years is visiting snowbirds, those escaping to Southport for a few months in the winter. 9. How many agents does Southport Realty employ? We have over 25 brokers, some fulltime and some part-time. We are proud to be locally owned and consider our team family!

CHEERS These booths quickly grew into tents and have become a staple of Oktoberfest. The beers traditionally served have been Marzen-style lagers, owing to the late September into early October timing of the festival. Yes, Oktoberfest happens largely in September. The weather is better, ok? Traditional Marzen beers are brewed in March (Marz is German for March) and left to age at a cool temperature, a process called “lagering,” until the fall when they are tapped and enjoyed at Oktoberfest. These brews can be anything from a light-bodied pale yellow to a full-bodied, deep amber, leaving plenty of room for each brewer to put its own stamp on the style. Plenty of American breweries have thrown their hats in the Oktoberfest ring and I’ve sampled five of them along with one of Munich’s own. Some are great, some are blah. Here’s how it went: SARANAC 1888 OCTOBERFEST LAGER 5.4 ABV 20 IBU

That’s CHEERS to most of us, and here’s the low down on the best beers to celebrate this long-time German tradition.

The label says: “Toasty, Malt, Octobery. An authentic German-style lager passed down through four generations. One sip will send you straight to Munich.” Sadly, this one loses points for spelling Okctoberfest with a “c”. For shame. My take: Light Amber. Poured with a nice head, but it dissipated quickly. Nice malty aroma. A little fruity. Easy to drink, in that it doesn’t have a very strong flavor at all. Moderately fizzy. Would pair well with sausages or kraut. HIGHLAND BREWING COMPANY

joy autumn with a traditional Oktoberfest.” (points for the Oxford comma) My Take: A bit darker amber with more hoppiness than the Saranac, but not a hoppy beer by any means. Moderately fizzy. More substantial than Saranac. Lingers on the palate longer, and it’s a good linger. This was my favorite of the bunch, but I’m a darker beer guy, so there’s that. LEINENKUGEL’S OKTOBERFEST GERMAN STYLE MARZEN BEER 5.1 % ABV IBU 20
The label says: Well, nothing really, aside from the name. My Take: Darker amber color. Nice head that stayed put. Not much aroma. Much hoppier and less malty than Saranac and Highland’s varieties. Advertised as “rich and malty” on the website, but it is in reality much less of either than the others. Only has an IBU of 20, putting it on par with Saranac, but it tastes much more hop-forward
and less malty/bready/rich. It’s much more bitter than a Marzen has any right to be. Almost skunky. Wouldn’t buy again.
The Label Says: “A deliciously Festive seasonal Ale. Here in Shiner, Texas, we’re suckers for tradition. Which is why this classic Oktoberfest brew is made with the finest quality tworow barley, Munich and caramel hops, along with German-grown Hallertau Tradition and Hersbrucker hops. It’s our way of honoring our ancestors and the beer they loved to celebrate with. So raise your stein to tradition and enjoy this utterly classic brew.” My Take: Medium amber color with a nice, stable head. Malty aroma. My second favorite of the bunch. Nicely carbonated. The maltiness stays with you after you swallow, but in the most pleasant of ways. I can imagine this with a bratwurst easily. Smooth and easy to drink, yet bold and satisfying. Wondering about the “ale” designation on the label, though. Marzens are traditionally lagers and this isn’t different from the rest to make me think it’s actually an ale. I’m guessing they just liked the way “ale” sounded on the label and went with it.
SIERRA NEVADA OKTOBERFEST 6.1% ABV 30 IBU
HOFBRAU OKTOBERFEST 6.3% ABV
The Label Says: “We’ve partnered with Brauhaus Miltenberger, one of Germany’s most highly regarded craft brewers, to create an authentic festival beer for your Oktoberfest celebrations right here at home. We’re focusing on a depth of complex flavor in this amber lager, using traditional techniques to create layers of rich malt notes that remain light and crisp.” My Take: A bit lighter amber with a nice, stable head. Malty aroma and taste with just the right amount of bite at the end. I guess that’s the “light and crisp” they mention. Higher IBU than the Leinenkugel, but somehow much less offensively bitter, this bite fits and is balanced with a strong malt presence that the Leinenkugel lacked.
The only actual German Oktoberfest beer I reviewed, and it’s even brewed in Munich, home of Oktoberfest. The Label Says: “Hofbrau Munchen is one of a selected group of breweries granted the privilege of supplying the Oktoberfest with their products. Using the highest quality ingredients, HB’s Oktoberfest Specialty has its own distinctive and unmistakable taste.” My Take: Light yellow color with lots of head foam. Not as malty as the American brews I’ve tried, but also not prominently hoppy. It’s a nice, quiet, drinkable beer that I can imagine enjoying all day. Though at 6.3% ABV, it would take some staying power.

ART BEAT Whimsical Witches Ann Thompson delights us with her wonderful world of wicked fun STORY AND PHOTOS BY CARLA EDSTROM

alloween will always represent the best part of my childhood. As a kid in the 1970’s and 80’s, Halloween was like a treasure hunt searching for the houses with the best candy. I have such fond memories of running around town with my friends for hours getting treats until crabby old people would tell us it was time to go home. I had this huge plastic pumpkin that I schlepped around town that held all the candy and it was my goal to not go home until it was full and weighed at least 15 pounds.
Our costumes were basically awful. They had to fit over our winter coats because it was usually cold on October 31st in Illinois. There were no girls wearing $100 Disney princess dresses. Honestly, our costumes were probably dangerous, made from flammable fabrics and the hard plastic masks that you couldn’t see or breathe out of. And it would stick to your face with a flimsy rubber band wrapped around your head. My favorite costume was probably my last year trick or treating. After whining about my past lame costumes, my mom dug out her nurses training uniform from 1950 for me to wear. My friends and I were excited to have decent costumes that year. Mary was a nun wearing the traditional black habit, and Jena’s costume was of a skeleton. She really got creative in her costume design that year, wearing a black sweat suit with a life size glow in the dark and fully jointed paper skeleton pinned to it. It was hilarious watching her walk through the yards glowing. Especially when she tripped and fell because we didn’t carry flashlights and we couldn’t see a thing except her skeleton. Designing the costumes for the witches she paints is what artist Ann Thompson loves most about her Halloween paintings. “I think I am designing their clothes,” laughs Thompson, who lives in St. James. Thompson is all about the details with each dress and suit adorning the people she
creates, and the witches are no exception. Each witch is created and dressed in meticulous detail. Even the shoes and socks are fitted and matched perfectly with a touch of whimsy and infused with magic. Brightly painted toenails and bulky necklaces are what her witches are wearing this season. Cats are a mainstay in most of her paintings, and if they can ride on a witch’s broom, it’s even better. She doesn’t forget the bats, rats and crows. One of my favorite Thompson witches is Birdy, who gave up her broom to ride a raven while carrying a cat, of course. Not only is she known for her Halloween paintings of witches, Thompson is well known for her family beach and shore scenes including Victorian house designs with the gingerbread trim and people dressed in early American styles. She has also incorporated her love of houses into her paintings including her Halloween pieces, convincing me that my next house should have three to four stories and include a widow’s peak on top, perfect for witches who need to fly away in a hurry under the full moon. “I love houses and designing all the details,” says Thompson. “Sometimes I get irritated that I have to mess the houses up by putting people in it!” Thompson’s talents have garnered her a prolific portfolio. In 1983, she won a cover art contest for the Saturday Evening Post

where she won a car and ended up doing two more covers for them. For 11 years she created the Christmas card for the Missouri Botanical Gardens. She has done many commissions over the years including ACF Industries, and a painting for Ronald McDonald house in St. Louis, which was one of the most rewarding paintings she has ever done. She only started painting Halloween themes a few years ago after Lantana’s, a local Southport gallery, asked her to be their featured artist. Thompson explains, “It just happened to be in the fall, and I already had a fall themed picture I had done some years before. And apparently, the Halloween style took off. So the following year I had to add to it. And every year I have added new witches.” One of her latest witches named Fiona has a whole bunch of black cats in her care. This is very fitting since witches cannot have too many black cats.

“I love houses and designing all the details,” says Thompson. “Sometimes I get irritated that I have to mess the houses up by putting people in it!”
Thompson has been an artist since she was a child. Her parents noticed her artistic abilities early on and inquired about art training. But they were advised to just let her go and create her own thing so she wouldn’t be overly influenced and copy the teacher. So, her parents supplied all her art materials and let her create what she saw and not what someone told her to make. This approach gave Thompson a free style that is uniquely hers and es-
tablished her as a true artist from a young age. She explains, “I started out with water color and pen and ink. Then I found Tempera, which is a nasty paint. Then I found Gouache and it’s been that ever since.” Today, Thompson still uses the opaque type of watercolor paint so she can get that hard edge painting effect that makes her unique paintings stand out. Her advise to young artists is to “Keep drawing… painting…and keep your eyes open to the world around you and draw what you see, however you see it.” Originally from St. Louis and growing up in White Plains, NY, Thompson has now made St. James her home for the past 14 years. Once again, The Associated Arts of Southport in conjunction with Franklin Square Gallery will be hosting an EMPTY BOWL event. Our potters and painters have been working hard to create unique beautiful soup bowls for this event. Each purchase of a bowl will help stamp out hunger in our area. Recipient charities are Brunswick Family Assistance, The Interfaith Food Pantry, and Matthews Ministry. Empty Bowls is a nationwide grassroots effort that began in Michigan about 20 years ago as a way for artists to help feed the hungry. Since then it has spread across the country and into neighboring Canada. The goal is to raise money and awareness to feed the hungry. The Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce held a hypnotic Coffee with the Girls September 19th at the Comfort Suites in Southport! The speaker was Kathryn Lawler, RNC, BSN, MSN, MA Human Development, Ph.D. Ms. Lawler combines the physical and psychological aspects associated with problems amenable to Hypnosis. She explained that hypnosis is a means of creating a state of expanded awareness, blocking out sources of distractions. The next Coffee with the Girls will be held on Tuesday, October 17th at 8am in the Comfort Suites. If you are a woman in business and would like to feel the support of other businesswomen, please join us. It is free for our Chamber members. Non-members are invited to attend two Chamber events prior to being required to join the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce.
