ON TH COVER
LETTER FROM THE OWNER Dear Readers, When the weather starts to get warm and sunny, I get spring fever to the extreme! I just want to run, jump and play and... not work! And living in this area does not make it easy to stay focused. Sometimes I just stop my car and watch a bird or gaze out over the water and truly take a moment to appreciate the beauty in the simple things. As I grow older (turning 50 this year!), I realize that I have spent far too much time rushing around to complete all my tasks and not taking time to smell the roses. Springtime is a reminder that we can start anew and shed our old skin. As you look about, take note of the buds on the trees, the birds and ducks frolicking, the pelicans diving and fish jumping and allow yourself to start a new beginning. We are all blessed to live in such a beautiful place and perhaps we need to be reminded to appreciate it and not take it for granted.

LIGHTHOUSE RUN AND PHLOCK TO THE BEACH OAK ISLAND EARTH DAY CELEBRATION
As a grassroots movement rallying for increased protection of our environment, the first Earth Day was observed in 1970 ultimately resulting in the formation of the Environmental Protection Agency. Since then, celebrations have taken off like gangbusters. In 1990 Earth Day went global and according to National Geographic, currently 200 million people in over 140 nations participate in Earth Day on April 22. Our precious spot on the map is no different. Celebrate all things green at the Oak Island Earth Day on April 22nd. This free event will be held at the town’s Middleton Park. People of all ages can learn how to take care of our planet, especially our precious spot on the map. There will be educational booths from numerous environmental groups, such as the Bald Head Island Conservancy. There will be staff from the Ft. Fisher at Fort Aquarium, and attendees can learn how to build a butterfly garden, and learn about sea turtles, recycling, and the importance
of sea oats and sand dunes. They will also have the chance to get an up-close look at seabirds. Tours of the Nature Center on Yacht Drive will also be part of the Earth Day Celebration. The recently-refurbished center is a great place to learn about native wildlife, trees and plants. Last year’s Earth Day celebration saw more than 250 visitors, and organizers hope to see even more turn out this year. Area school groups also attend, giving the students a chance to learn about and appreciate the natural beauty of the community. “Our focus for the Oak Island Earth Day is protection and care of the Earth, along with our fragile coastal environment,” Oak Island Parks and Recreation Director Rebecca Squires said. “At the festival, you will find local groups that have ties to stewardship of insects, small animals, sea life, water quality, stormwater runoff, and more.” Some of the other groups in attendance will be the Ft. Fisher Aquarium outreach program, Beekeepers, Sea Biscuit Bird Rescue, NC Coastal Federation, and many more. The event is free and open to the

The first run was held on April 10, 1999. The 5k was added in2006 and it was a popular addition especially for those that didn’t want to tackle the G.V. Barbee Oak Island Bridge. The races’ popularity has once again led to a location change, with the runs stopping at starting at Oak Island’s Middleton Park Extension. Those who would rather ease into their

Contributing to the Future of Brunswick County!
Phillip A. Cook Memorial Golf Tournament impacting the lives of area children BY: DEAN BLAINE
P
hillip Cook wasn’t one to speak of his generosity. He never sought recognition. His sons Steve and Chad Cook didn’t know the scope of his charity until their father’s wake. They remembered their father’s acts of kindness growing up in the small mountain town of Man, West Virginia.
Phillip helped to build a junior high school in his hometown. He donated funds to help young people participate in sports. Without telling anyone, he purchased class rings and letter jackets for less fortunate students. He helped build the local church. “Early on, we learned that our dad took care of the people in his community,” Chad said. But they didn’t know that he carried his philosophy of helping to Brunswick County. At his wake, the brothers were approached by a young lady who told them their father had paid for her much needed medication. He just reached into his pocket, she said. He was the first to help us with any project involving kids, Oak Island Police reported. He was a great listener, others claimed. “It was amazing the people that we met that night,” Steve said. “I remember just kind of being in awe. It was something that he never shared with me, and we were very close.” Their father moved to Oak Island in 2003, and opened the popular Island Way Restaurant. Before long, he was a fixture in the community, and the face of the restaurant. He endeavored to provide the utmost in customer service. The slogan of the restaurant became, “The only thing we overlook is the ocean.” It wasn’t enough to meet expectations,
Phillip said, you had to exceed expectations. He made many friends. “He was the hardest working man that I ever knew,” Steve said. Their father was always the first one to arrive at the restaurant in the morning and the last one to leave at night. So on the morning of July 10, 2007, when Phillip didn’t show up at the restaurant, employees feared something was wrong. When they arrived at his house on Oak Island, they discovered the body of Phillip slumped at the door to his home. The restaurant linens that he took home every evening to wash lay at his side. He’d been stalked and savagely beaten for the few hundred dollars in his wallet. The community was in shock. In the aftermath, Steve and his brother Chad moved to Oak Island, to run their father’s restaurant. They weren’t about to let his business suffer. Just as their father did, they worked hard, made friends and became involved in the community. In 2012, Steve and Chad decided to honor their father’s memory. The Phillip A. Cook Memorial Golf Tournament was born. In keeping with their father’s legacy of helping others, especially children, they would donate all proceeds from the event to Waves4Kids, a local charity dedicated to helping Brunswick County children in disruptive situations.
Waves4Kids provides services including educational grants, clothing, school supplies and computers in the home for more than 1,300 children throughout the county. The annual golf tournament is the principle sponsor of the organization. “This golf tournament is having an impact on lives,” said Kay Wolf, president of Waves4Kids. Forty percent of tournament proceeds go to Waves4Kids programs and 60 percent benefits the charity’s Phillip A. Cook Memorial Education and Development Fund, dedicated to providing area students with the money to attend college. The educational award is not a one-time grant, said Wolf. “The fund follows you the whole time you’re in college. It repeats year after year.” The program has proved a resounding success, having sent more than 12 Brunswick County seniors to college. One student wants to get his doctorate in music education and then return to Brunswick County to establish an orchestra at West Brunswick High School, Wolf said. Another student realized her dream of becoming an environment scientist, now working for a firm in Atlanta. Other students strive to become dentists, forensic scientists and clothing designers. A recent graduate now serves the Peace Corps in Ethiopia. “People seem to think that disadvantaged kids don’t have the same dreams as other kids,” Wolf said, “that’s just not true.” Phillip Cook understood this, she added. “He believed that you should give a person the opportunity to succeed, and that philosophy has carried over to his sons today.” The Phillip A. Cook Memorial Golf Tournament is held each year on the Monday following The Masters. The tournament takes place this year on April 11, at the Oak Island Golf Club. The registration is $125 per player in groups of four. Fee includes breakfast, goodie bag, pizza and refreshments on the course, an afternoon dinner provided by Island Way Restaurant and a live auction. Cash prizes are awarded for first and second place winners, and players receive giveaways for closest to the pin or par threes, longest drive on hole 18, and a hole-in-one on hole 12. The tournament has contributed nearly $100K to Waves4Kids since its inception in 2012. “It’s an honor to contribute to the future of Brunswick County,” Steve said. “This entire process instills the types of values that our dad held in high regard.”1

A “front porch culture” is one of the charms that drew Branscomb to South-

It’s the opposite with what’s happening with the dehumanizing of the music industry.” Branscomb has reached out to kindred spirits throughout that music industry, both nationally and locally, to bring a wide range of talent and musical genres to this year’s Songwriter’s Festival, expanding on last year’s event in several ways. “I have tried to put into effect all the feedback we got from last year, as well as some visions we had all along. The afternoon festival continues with Brunswick county R&B prodigy Ian Davis and a full force gospel quintet led by Lamanuel Boykin. Jeanette and Johnny Williams return for one set to finish off the afternoon, singing the blues in bluegrass and bluegrass gospel. Branscomb is making it a point to include more young people in this year’s festival. Youth from the Kidswrite program at South Brunswick High School will be performing their own songs on one of the porches during the Porch Stroll. The Kidswrite program was founded by Branscomb and is administered by SBHS aquaculture teacher Barry Bey. Branscomb is a practicing psychologist and uses music and songwriting to help both troubled children and adults. “I have been working with both professional songwriters, and people who don’t necessarily already write songs -- such as new songwriters, or high-needs populations such as at-risk children and adults, for around 35 years. I have a model of teaching that has evolved over many years, influenced by my experiences as a songwriter and a psychologist, that focusses on the creative process and helping people connect in authentic ways with their own personal writer’s voice. When you’re speaking from your soul, don’t be afraid of that,” she tells those she works with. The top three Kidswrite students will perform. “They’ve written these heart-rending songs about their dreams,” Branscomb explained, and they are very excited (and a bit nervous) to share their work. In contrast to showcasing emerging high school talent, Saturday night will see the festival’s Premier Concert at 7 pm at the Southport Marina. Dubbed “Take Five,” to boast 5 internationally known songwriters, this event brings powerhouse musicians and their bands to Southport’s front door: Missy Raines and the New Hip playing jazz and blues-infused Americana, Claire Lynch with Bryan McDowell and the Jeanette Williams Band bringing contemporary acoustic and roots bluegrass to the stage. The Jeanette Williams Band will feature guest and festival host Louisa Branscomb. Take Five concert-goers will also have the rare chance to hear Branscomb and Lynch perform their widely acclaimed hit, “Dear Sister,” based upon letters between Branscomb’s own great-great aunt and uncle during the civil war.
COVER STORY to meet others and enjoy the camaraderie of going through the weekend together,” said Branscomb. Branscomb said this festival is coming together with a much smaller budget and fewer volunteers than comparable events she’s been associated with. She hopes to make the Southport Songwriter Festival an annual thing, and this year will determine if that will be possible. “I hope that if the community sees having this help distinguish Southport, help children in the schools, and help songwriters and businesses of Southport, they will support what we are doing, and if not, we will just have accomJoJo Settles from last year, is returning and will be on the Emerging Talent porch.
The festival kicks off Monday with a songwriter workshop featuring Eliza Gilkyson, who will join Branscomb and Teresa Neal for a Nashville-style Round Concert that evening. Songwriter mentor sessions with Neal and Branscomb will be available in a private setting by reservation only Tuesday and Wednesday. Sessions are $30 per half hour and can be reserved via email to SouthportSongwriterFestival@gmail.com. On Thursday at 7 pm Randy Truett hosts a free open mic night for songwriters at the Southport Community Building. Friday afternoon from 3:30 to 5 pm Southport Johnny’s Guitar and Art will host an open house where you can mix and mingle with many of the week’s songwriter guest artists before the Full Moon Blues By The Bay concert at the Southport Marina at 7 pm Friday night featuring Rev Geutschow, Dennis Walton and Guy Phillips among other acts yet to be announced. Saturday features the Porch Stroll and Take Five Premier Concert and the festival wraps up Sunday at the Southport Community Building with the Songs of the Spirit events. Tickets for the Southport Songwriter Festival are available now through the festival website, www.southportsongwriterfestival.com. A few events, such as the open mic night and open house, are free, while others offer an individual ticket. Also available is a weekend pass for $50 that includes many of the festival events, such as the Porch Stroll, Full Moon Blues By The Bay and Songs of the Spirit. “The best way to do the event is to buy the weekend ticket and the Premier Concert ticket and immerse yourself in the music, get to hear songs of all styles, and get

plished something wonderful for two years. After all, our mission is building community. We are doing that as we speak,” Branscomb said. “It’s a big mission with a big heart. We are new, so we have a shoestring budget and a small but mighty group of volunteers. We welcome volunteers and contributions, to help us with this year, and to make it to year three. Without contributions, we may not be able to continue the tradition of these first two festivals. There are many ways to be a part – we have a place for everyone. I believe it takes a village to do most anything. To me, Southport is that village.”1

SHOWCASE Hilarious Live Theatre
Moonlight and Magnolias comes to Brunswick Little Theatre BY: JEFFREY STITES
T
he year is 1939. MGM Studio Executive Producer, David O. Selznick, has stopped production of Gone With The Wind because he doesn’t like the script. Facing costs of $50,000 a day while shut down is a small fortune in Depression-era America.
David then brings in legendary screenwriter Ben Hecht and big time Hollywood director Victor Fleming to revamp the script. He locks these men in his office for five days, feeding them nothing but peanuts and bananas, until they churn out the script of what would become a cinematic classic. This is the story coming to Brunswick Little Theatre’s Mainstage this month with their production of Moonlight and Magnolias, running April 15, 16, 22 and 23 at 7:30 and April 17 and 24 at 3:00 at the BLT theatre, 8068 River Road SE, Southport. Moonlight and Magnolias is directed by Eben French Mastin, last seen on the Brunswick Little Theatre stage performing the title role in Big Dawg Productions’ The Hermit of Fort Fisher in 2014. Mastin, a thirty-five year veteran of stage, screen and television, has over one hundred stage credits to his name, calls this show
“a director’s dream” because of the small but talented cast he has gotten to work with. Mastin is joined by fellow Hermit of Fort Fisher alumni Richard Davis, Hal Cosec and
Paul “Elie” Pittenger (also a long-time BLT actor) along with Kathy Cagney, who acted alongside Mastin in BLT’s collection of oneacts, Funny Little Thing Called Love, last year. “Directing a show with a cast of talented, experienced actors is almost like cheating,” said Mastin, “Why? Because, the more experienced, the better instincts. By this, I basically mean they knew or felt when it was time to stand, sit, cross the stage, etc. They were doing it before I could get the words out of my mouth. With this kind of talent, the play almost directs itself.” Tickets for Moonlight and Magnolias are $20 for adults and $12 for students with an ID, and are on sale now at the Ricky Evans
Gallery, 211 N. Howe Street, Southport, and online at www.brunswicklittlethetare.com. This show contains some adult language and is not suitable for small children, but anyone who loves Gone With The Wind, who has ever wondered how a novel was turned into a movie, or who simply enjoys hilarious live theatre will certainly have a great time. 1

HOMESTYLE
When The Old Meets The New The Charm Flows In Southport BY: KATHLEEN MC GOWAN
W
es Cross, a local builder and Delina Devoid, a local house designer with 3D Designs Inc., had been working together with Chris and DiAne Benzie, from Raleigh, as a design and build team for months now and it was time to go take a look. It’s hard to tell that this all started with two lots and two houses...one large and one small...each one 40-50 years old before being torn down.
I’d driven by many times and watched as the transformation at 412 N. Lord Street took place and now, in spirit, I see that it fits in as if it was constructed in the 19th century. It’s charm beautifully blends the new home with the old property and, for me, that’s what makes the charm flow in Southport and keeps it special. The Benzie home is a small footprint at
2,209 square feet but it lives large. Not too big and not too small... It’s functional and easy to live in and the it’s the perfect floor plan to live in year-round, entertain friends, visit with family and there is plenty of room for visitors. There is not a foot of wasted space and it has all the amenities that you would expect in a larger home. www.SouthportMag.com / APRIL 2016 / Southport Magazine 17

The interior blends calming hues of a blue, grey and white palette with a quiet space comprised of beautifully finished walls and clean corners juxtaposed with Cross’s keen eye for the Southport Style. Cross built the door and window casings on-site and not only do they look just like the ones you’d see in a 1930’s home but the detail in the finishes of his signature Southport Bows, door frames, window casings and built-ins are immaculate while underscoring the historic look. The paredback neutrals and tidy wood floors create a natural backdrop for a vintage coastal indoors-outdoors theme and the textured fabrics, cozy linens and up cycled furnishings sit alongside inspired collections of local, family and up cycled art. All these elements come together to create that perfect cottage character with a relaxed, beach-house vibe embodying all the notions of a historic cottage with modern amenities. I just love seeing a small house that’s as thoughtfully designed and charm-

He walked through the process and educated us in every step of the process” DiAne adds. “Brilliant - he walked through the process and educated us in every step of the process” - DiAne Benzie on working with Wes Cross There’s not one thing the Benzies would change. Every aspect was planned and designed with care to make for a positive experience with Wes Cross and Delina DeVoid. The design concept embraces a fun, whimsical and practical character that evokes the small town quality of the property and the collections of local, family, up cycled art and found treasures makes for a wonderful balance of old and new. But when asked what their favorite find would be, both DiAne and Chris say it’s the 1890’s farm house door which they were thrilled to find in Raleigh. find, Wes started/offered the door quest around January 2015 and kept at if for 10 months, until October. Every door was found, refurbished and refinished except for the master bath doors which are only ‘in place’ for now until they find three more doors to replace them. 90% of the furnishings are refurbs, reloved; flea market and thrift store finds... each ‘married’ with paint and a top finish. Many hours and plenty of elbow grease were put into the furniture and finds - “Every piece is different and needs different treatment. It’s amazing what you find if you spend a little time with it” DiAne reflects, ‘Its a Labor of love”.
“Every piece is different and needs different treatment. It’s amazing what you find if you spend a little time with it” DiAne reflects, Its a Labor of love”. - DiAne Benzie The master bedroom has a full-size bed adorned with a headboard made of antique tiles found in Raleigh 17 years ago. A large glass pendant light that originally was intended for the kitchen flanks each bedside table. The marriage of old and new works well and the room is separated from the hallway with an 1890’s door from a Rocky Mount doctor’s office. Carefully laid bathroom tile mimics bath mats and the 36” doors/doorways are set to ‘age in place’... this is a retirement home so, there will be no need to update as time
goes by to make all areas wheelchair accessible if needed. Every nook and cranny in the master bath is taken advantage of and used for storage and convenience. The two double bedrooms are equally as stylish and sumptuous. Twin room/guest room provides a peaceful haven with slim twin beds, individual closets and Chris Benzie’s childhood dresser, which has
been distressed and painted to keep with the vintage coastal cottage balance with family and found pieces. I could spend a month of Sundays there in that room. A guest bath features a 9-panel door with different glass insets which once served as a front door. The bathroom has a fresh, vintage, nautical feel with a physicians cabinet... a real cabinet built in
1930’s made into hamper... two cast iron utility sinks, unique cabinet breaks, mirrors that came from a school supply catalog... just like a locker room...and a perfectly coordinating stool to hold all your bathing needs. Again, Cross’s craftsmanship is evident here as each door slides with ease and every edge is crisp and clean. The living space is open and full of un-

interrupted light with plenty of space to mingle, sit and enjoy the wide-open view of both the indoor and the outdoors. This has got to be stunning during summer and autumn months when the outdoors provide a dramatic backdrop for the calming hues of the blue, gray and white palette of this comfortable and quiet space. It’s full of found and re-loved pieces alongside new furnishings, Chris’s antique radios and plenty of nautical touches that invite conversation. Wes wanted a mantle, even without a fireplace, so there was one focal point seeing that there is actually just that one wall in the living space. I like how the found mantle completes the space while providing a niche for the TV and there’s something about a mantle in view of the sleek modern kitchen that makes it cozy... even if there isn’t a fireplace. DiAne’s Dad made the dining room table from the wooden alter in the church where the couple was married - St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Virginia Beach. DiAne and Chris were married in 1986 and the parish rebuilt a big new sanctuary and had to build a new altar in the mid to late 90’s. The chandelier overhead is by Robin at Wild by Nature. Other finds and treasures include a family christening gown, a 1970’s Bob Timberlake found in Leland, a carved boat, an antique mirror, and artwork and furnishings by Crystal Merrit and Cindy Pipher. Chris’s office is full of treasures displayed carefully around a boat that was built by his father in 1956. Cross designed the shelves around this treasured piece and included his signature Southport Bows along the top to mirror the door and window frames in the sunlit office. toured the home, the couple has added all of DiAnes beautiful antique/depression dishes to the Butler’s Pantry shelving, along with boat-cleat hangers for coats and hats as they enter through the side door. DiAne adds “That room is now complete and absolutely my favorite of the house.”
“Wes made the experience so much more positive” - DiAne Benzie Entertaining is a breeze in this home as they found with their first oyster roast this past fall. DiAne smiles “There was so much buzz in the neighborhood about the tiny house that we held an open house for the curious and we had a ball...a great time...over 200 people came. We met all of Southport. It’s so very easy to entertain
- there are no dead ends or rooms to nowhere. We have wonderful neighbors that welcomed us and made us feel at home. We are very fortunate to be a part of such a wonderful city - A big part of that is our neighbors.” DiAne adds. Part of the cottage’s appeal is its porch... where they spend half their time now that they have all new front porch furniture created by The Pink Pelican. As far as plans for the yard, the landscape in the back is minimal at this point and just enough in the front for now, with plenty of room to mature. Chris adds, “We will fill in as we go...to maintain.” “We have wonderful neighbors that welcomed us and made us feel at home. We are very fortunate to be a part of such a wonderful city - A big part of that is our neighbors.” said DiAne. 1 Photos by Patrick McGowan

BIZ Q & A Go With The “Flow”
Take time for yourself at Laugh & Breathe Yoga BY: LESLIE FOSTER
B
etsy Kimmel, CYO, Chief Yoga Officer of Laugh& Breathe yoga has been teaching the practice of Flow Yoga to devoted yogis in SPT for five years. The benefits of practicing yoga, stress reduction, relaxation, improved flexibility and a general sense of well-being are attractive reasons to take Betsy’s classes. Add to this an atmosphere that encourages you to “ giggle a little” as you join other yogis on the mat.....are all wonderful reasons to begin the practice of Flow Yoga. In a world where we do so much for others, the practice of yoga is about doing something for good for yourself. Take the time, show up for one of her classes... And well you know, just breathe!
Q: ‘LAUGH & BREATHE YOGA’ IS CATCHY, WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR IT?
A: Thank you! I was struggling to come up with a name for my business and I was speaking with my boyfriend (now husband), and said (feeling so frustrated) I just want people to laugh and breathe. He said, why don’t you name your business Laugh & Breathe Yoga. Hence, Laugh & Breathe Yoga was born.
Q: WHAT IS YOGA?
A: Wow, that’s a hefty question. To me, yoga is taking time away from your busy life, finding your breath, being mindful of the moment you’re in, and then letting everything go just for a little bit. Sometimes it happens on the mat and sometimes it doesn’t, but you always leave a little more stretched out and relaxed.
Q: MYTH OR FACT: YOU HAVE TO BE FLEXIBLE TO PRACTICE YOGA?
A: Total myth! I love it when people say to me, I can’t do yoga, I’m not flexible. I love to share the practice of yoga with them. Increased flexibility is one of the many reasons to participate in yoga.
Q: THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF YOGA, CAN BE INTIMIDATING TO A NOVICE, WHAT TYPE DO YOU TEACH?
A: Yes, there are different styles of yoga as with any tradition, which has been around for thousands of years’. Finding the yoga practice in which you’re comfortable with can sometimes be a challenge but well worth it in the long run. I teach Flow Yoga; which is a practice where clients move through yoga poses
while focusing on their breath. Classes are Monday and Wednesday evenings at 5:30pm at Southport Presbyterian Church. Laugh & Breathe Yoga also offers private, semi-private and business sessions.Stay tuned for new classes!
Q: WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AT LAUGH & BREATHE?
Owner, Betsy Kimmel strikes a tree pose.
on the mat, the first thing you’ll notice is a friendly environment. If it’s your first time, remember, everyone has a first yoga practice! You may feel awkward, off balance, sore, and notice muscles that you haven’t talked to in a very long time saying, hello! Once you’ve said hello to your long forgotten muscles you’ll feel awakened, energized, and alive in yourself. Our philosophy is to laugh, breathe and maybe even stretch a little! We strive at Laugh & Breathe
A: I’m the CYO – Chief Yoga Officer. As CYO, my role involves everything from teaching, scheduling, marketing, and yes, paying the bills.
Q: HOW LONG HAVE YOU PRACTICED YOGA AND WHAT IS THE BEST REASON TO START?
A: I’ve been athletic my whole life, which led into my my yoga practice about 5 years ago following a torn rotator cuff while playing tennis. I initially began practicing yoga to keep active while healing from the injury, but soon I realized an innumerable amount of benefits from a continued flow practice. I became more relaxed and felt a relief from my day to day stress. You may wonder what kind of stress a yogi has in her life, but, like many transplants here in Southport, I also moved here to get away from the hecticness of the corporate world. I’m lucky to be able to play tennis again and have noticed my game has improved tremendously since I began practicing yoga. The best reason to practice yoga - Taking time for yoga is like giving yourself a present.
Q: WHAT CAN A BEGINNER EXPECT AT THEIR FIRST LESSON?
A: We love new yogis! When you join us
Yoga for everyone to be comfortable in your own body, and we really don’t take ourselves too seriously. We provide an open and enjoyable environment, where you can laugh at yourself and with others as you work through your new practice.
Q: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE EXPERIENCES AS A YOGA INSTRUCTOR?
A: That is such a hard question; I have so many favorite moments. To sum it up: I love seeing development in my yogi’s practice, it’s amazing to see each and every one progress in their individual practice. As each yogi becomes stronger and more confident in their abilities their practice opens up like a beautiful flower blooming.1

Take Care Of Yourself By Taking Care of the Planet!
Earth Day and World Health Day 2016 BY LESLIE RESCHLY, BSN, RN
A
fter it’s inception in 1970, Earth Day was recognized in my Iowa elementary school with a small tree seedling in a Styrofoam cup (green huh?) for each student to tote on the walk home then plant as homework. Thankfully, over time the mission to secure a healthy future for generations has become more mainstay for many!
Not only the month for Earth Day, April is also marked by World Health Day on April 7th. This year the focus is to manage the growing epidemic of Diabetes through diet, healthy body weight and exercise. These two days of acknowledgement allow us to look at Eco-friendly behaviors you can implement to benefit your health. Taking care of your health by taking care of the planet are interconnected. Your body and mind are affected by the surroundings in which you dwell. In fact, the quality of the environment can cause disease; for example, smog produces respiratory and heart disease. Pat yourself on the back if you are using reusable bags for shopping, choosing paper bags if necessary (or even declining bags when possible) and avoiding plastic bottle waste by carrying your own BPA free water bottle. There are several available in rubber coated glass and aluminum if you are truly anti-plastic. But can you take a more active role?
EAT REAL FOOD
Those of you who follow this column know the importance of daily exercise and maintenance of a normal body weight. This month, let’s focus on this goal of eating high quality, whole foods. Strive to consume mostly plant products and unprocessed foods, which are low in fat and nutrient dense---excellent choices for the prevention of Diabetes and Heart Disease. Avoid chemicals and opt for organic if there is a choice. Buy local through a Farmer’s Market or local Co-op. Greenlands Farm in Bolivia has an option for purchasing veggies. Local, fresh picked produce has no loss of nutrients due to travel and
PLANT YOUR OWN GARDEN!
Many web sites, blogs and products exist to grow healthy vegetables in even the smallest of spaces and containers. Herbs can be grown in very small pots and add dimensions to your salads and cooking.
Delight your palate with extraordinary cuisine
Surprisingly, as I was proofing this article to send to the editor, NBC Nightly News ran a disturbing story regarding the state of the diet of America. They reported that almost 60% of the calories in the American diet are from ultra processed foods! These foods contain salt, fat, additives, preservatives and added sugar accounting for almost 90% of the added sugar in our diet. The end results, weight gain, Diabetes and Heart Disease! Join me in making conscientious choices to promote your health and protect our beautiful Earth! 1
For your health, I urge you to contemplate your choices daily; consume less and waste less. Here are some suggestions: • Buy in bulk in reusable containers • Use BPA free reusable water bottles, instead of plastic

• Compost • Recycle • When buying new appliances, choose energy efficient models limited energy spent in transport. Have you ever considered the environmental cost of transportation of your food to you? Make the choice to switch out white rice for Quinoa, which is a high protein grain. Did you know that white rice requires tremendous amounts of water for processing? Choose whole wheat over white anything for increased nutrients and fiber plus refining takes energy and resources. Select seafood that is lower on the food chain or farmed as many large predatory fish contain more mercury, lead, industrial chemicals and pesticides. Local fish markets such as Haag and Sons can help you secure the perfect filet. Cut one meat meal per week. As suggested by the Environmental Working Group, skipping one burger per week is the environmental equivalent of “taking your car off the road for 320 miles”. Many environmentalists also proclaim the benefits of grass fed beef, as less energy is required for the growing and processing of grain to feed the cows. An added benefit is Grass-fed beef is felt to have more Omega 3 fatty acids, vitamins, fewer calories and higher levels of antioxidants.
• Consider products which utilize 100% post consumer recycled paper • Avoid the use of a straw! This simple choice is huge • If possible, ride your bike or walk to work or for errands • Read your labels. If you need a chemistry textbook to recognize an ingredient, it is probably not good for you. • Beware of the sugar content in low fat items • Try colorful variations to vegetables, I myself love purple carrots! • Use a natural deodorant to avoid the aluminum in antiperspirant. As an alternative, try using baking soda, you can find recipes online. • Wear essential oils, perfumes or cologne may contain formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and aluminum.

n March 15, 1996, John and Sheila Barbee decided they wanted to open their own restaurant. For years, they had worked at the now closed, Port Charlie’s restaurant on the waterfront in Southport. Many people supported them including John’s mother, Cathy, who gave them the house to renovate into a restaurant.

John and Sheila worked hard turning the house into a restaurant but they were ready to open for business in the spring of 1996. Even with their extensive knowledge of the restaurant business, running their own place and catering, in conjunction with raising a family proved to be a challenge. Sheila had just given birth to their second child, Grace. They quickly realized that they needed to hire help to wait on the tables at night, so they hired their first employee, Carol Ann Finucan. As time went by and their business grew, they hired many more employees, including friends and other family. It has always been a family affair and the charm of the house turned restaurant fits well with the food they serve. In 2001, they welcomed their third child, Sarah. And just like their

You can find a wide variety of food at Dry Street not just pizza; homemade sandwiches, salads and daily specials make Dry Street one of Southport’s finest eating establishments.
