Each year Southport Magazine gets the privilege of working with summer interns who are looking to learn and gain work experience before entering the real world. I always look forward to this time because they really help out with the work load and I feel honored to help them learn and grow. Each intern always brings a unique set of skills and I enjoy watching them adapt to different challenges. I am always amazed at their fearlessness to attempt projects

outside of their comfort zone. This summer we were lucky enough to have three interns; two college students and one high school student. All three have made real contributions to our summer issues. It has been a pleasure working with them and I have been so proud to watch them grow. But more than anything, I have appreciated watching three young women working together and being supportive of each other. They have been joking that on the days we

go out and about on the streets of Southport, they follow behind me like I am a momma duck and they are my baby ducks! Allow me to introduce the 2015 intern class of Southport Magazine! If you see them around town, be sure to show your love and encourage these bright young women! Kris Beasley Momma Duck

Patients are able to visit a doctor, go next door to the food bank, and return to pick up their prescriptions. By providing all of these services, the workers at the clinic hope to treat the whole patient. Family owned and operated for 20 years Reservations Accepted • 910-457-0801

What makes this tournament so successful is the small town atmosphere, a beautiful and challenging course, and the kind staff. The golfers will start their rounds on August 22 with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun. The tournament takes place at The Lakes Country Club on South Shore Drive in Boiling Spring Lakes and the format of play is “Scramble/Captain’s Choice” which is over 18 holes. There will be an entry fee of $50, which includes golf, beverages, lunch and prizes! There will be cash prizes and golf rounds awarded and the winning will have their names added to the trophy that stays at the course for all to see. We spoke with Commissioner Mary Stilwell about her involvement and love of the tournament. Commissioner Stilwell has been with the tournament since the start, when she chaired the Parks and Recreation Committee in 2000. She also was a part of breaking the committee into two, so that Special Events had just as much attention as Parks and Recreation. In 2005, Stilwell worked with the current city manager Elly Johnson on creating the now Mayor’s Cup; Johnson actual6 Southport Magazine / August 2015 / www.SouthportMag.com

ly donated the trophy that is given to the winning team. “This event was growing by leaps and bounds. I would take a day and drive to every golf course down 17 to the South Carolina line and solicit golf packages for prizes. We had very little money so it was up to me to provide prizes. I depended on Steve White, owner of The Lakes, for his help with this growing event. He became as much a part of it as I was! I know it would not have been as successful if it were not for him” said Stilwell. Local businesses have also become involved with the event by donating door prizes. Stilwell considers the tournament more than just an event, but a get together that is filled with golfers from everywhere. “I have never played a game of golf but loved doing this tournament and working with the Lakes crowd and all those who came to join us. In 2014, I retired from Special Events after 14 years and became a Commissioner in this city I love. But the one event I miss the most is The Mayor’s Cup Golf Tournament.” said Stilwell. Take a Trip Back in Time

Every Second Saturday at Southport’s Maritime Museum BY LISA P. STITES AND JOHN STITES

uring WWII, women were trained to spot shadows out over the water. They carried small books with them and knew how to identify what was a friendly plane and which ones belonged to the enemies we were fighting, which was very important information.

That’s just one of many interesting bits of history at the heart of the theme for the Second Saturday program August 8 at the North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport. During the summer months in June, July and August, the Museum focuses on a particular topic, or theme, to draw even more visitors than normal. August’s theme, “And Our Flag Was Still There,” will highlight the military through the ages. Second Saturday programs run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lori Sanderlin, Director of Education for the Southport Museum, said the Second Saturday programs are a way to expose the public to history and local artisans. “We feel like we’re providing a great opportunity for the community,” Sanderlin said. “We’re very passionate about what we do.” Displays, combined with hands-on events, make for a program that offers

something for children and adults alike. And on the Museum’s grounds, local artisans sell their hand-crafted goods, including shirts, jams, soaps, jewelry and wooden toys. There are usually between 25-30 vendors and approximately 400-500 visitors attend the Second Saturday programs. July’s program was “We Are Tar Heels: The Naval Stores.” While learning about the Long Leaf Pine, which produced many products used in making boats, children had the chance to make pinecone bird feeders. Sanderlin also had them write one fact they either already knew about the Tar Heel state or something they learned at the Museum. She used the paper they wrote on to help “build” a pine tree in the museum. “I’m an educator. I’m a historian,” Sanderlin said. Since the theme was about Naval stores, displays of tools were also incorporated into the Museum’s permanent displays.

“It’s very kinesthetic,” Sanderlin said. Previous Second Saturday themes included programs on trains and pirates — children got to make their own eye patches that day. The military is always a popular topic, and one program focused solely on the navy. August’s theme again focuses on the military, and members of the Carolina Living History Guild will be participating with members portraying the military from the American Revolution and the Civil War. Reenactors will set up displays and offer educational information about a variety of topics, including arts of the sailor and medicine from the American Revolution time period, and steam engines, torpedoes and other weapons from the Civil War era. Guild members will come from all across North and South Carolina. Since 2004, the Guild’s members have travelled throughout North Carolina, South Carolina

and Virginia, taking displays to museums and historic sites, Guild member Chris Grimes said. Guild member Andrew Duppstadt said the reason they participate in programs like the Second Saturday event is that it’s another way to teach people history. “The practice of living history allows us to reach out to a broad audience in terms of age, gender, race, and place of residence to teach people history they might not otherwise learn or be exposed to,” Duppstadt said. “Many people will learn things from us that they might never have thought about otherwise, like how a steam engine works or how medical practices in the 18th century were different (or sometimes similar) to modern practices. We give folks a chance to see and experience history in a much different way than they can in a classroom or with a book. They get to experience a little part of it

for themselves. In this way, we hope that people come away with a little bit better understanding of what life was like in the 18th or 19th century.” The WWII displays and events planned for the August 8 program will include details about women on the homefront, clothing, hairstyles, and Victory gardens, which were planted during the war to help counter the demand on the public food supply. There will also be WWII era posters and music from the time as well. “You have to get the feel for it,” Sanderlin explained. Planning for the Second Saturday events starts at least a year in advance, Sanderlin said. After choosing a topic, there is a lot of legwork to be done in lining up displays and participants. In fact, planning for the June 11, 2016 Second Saturday is already underway. That Second Saturday will be all about colonial life in the Cape Fear Region. Sanderlin said the museum staff come up with ideas for programs, like the Second Saturdays or children’s camps, in a variety of ways. Staff at the Museum brain-

storm, they get ideas from parents or other visitors to the Museum, or even through Facebook. “We try to take in public opinion in our programming. We always welcome suggestions,” she said One parent said her daughter wanted to do a princess-themed camp. Princesses are not exactly a maritime museum topic, but mermaids and lady pirates are. Sanderlin said it was that suggestion that led to the scheduling of a Nautical Girls children’s camp. The Museum has an ideal location to share local, maritime and military history. Located at 204 E. Moore Street, the Museum is adjacent to the Garrison House of Fort Johnston. The back of the building has a picture perfect view of the river. There is even a periscope in the Museum that gives visitors an up close look at the Bald Head Lighthouse, boats going by and all the other activity on the water. Permanent exhibits range from a Megalodon tooth that’s probably 20,000 million years old to pictures of the devastation experienced in Southport the wake

of Hurricane Hazel in 1954, and much in between. There are exhibits about pirates, the first settlers in the area, early explorers who came to the area in the 1500s, pirates, naval stores and shipbuilding, colonization of Charlestown, Brunswick Town, Fort Johnston, the steamboat era, the fishing industry, the Civil War, WWI and WWII and lighthouses. There is also a scavenger hunt for children. They get a form that gives them items to find throughout the museum. “They’re

learning as they go,” Sanderlin said. Once they successfully complete it, they can pick an item from the Treasure Box, conveniently located in the gift shop. Children can do the scavenger hunts during Second Saturday programs as well. The Museum’s regular hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, and admission is free. Beacons In The Night

Spotlight on National Lighthouse Day BY JENNIFER BARNETT

W

hen I was a little girl and my family would vacation on the shores of the OBX, my days were full of adventure! I would watch the beaches for wild ponies, search the horizon for passing ships, and listen to tales of sunken treasure and dream of riding dolphins in the waves. During this precious time in my life, there was no better view than from the top of the Hatteras Lighthouse which was, at the time, actually still on the shore line. The lighthouse was full of mystery and wonder. As the years passed, my view of the lighthouse changed. It was now the backdrop of every romance novel I carried in my beach bag and the setting of every wedding proposal scenario I dreamt up. When I looked up at it my heart would swoon from anticipation of being swept off my feet. Now that I am a wife and mother the lighthouse has become more of an old friend that I visit reminiscent of innocent times of dolphin spotting and treasure hunting. No matter which shoreline they overlook, lighthouses are a sign of dependability and strength. They promise us that no matter how rough the storm, they will protect us from the rocky shore. There is something reassuring about that for me. So it is no surprise that there is a day devoted to them. August 7th is National Lighthouse Day. We asked our readers to send in some of their favorite photos of our area lighthouses. I’m definitely not the only one smitten with these bright lights in the dark sky. They each have their own story to tell and with any luck, you have already added them to a chapter or two in your book of life. If not, take some time to visit them and create your own memories.

OAK ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE

www.oakislandlighthouse.org The Oak Island Lighthouse was completed in 1958 at a total cost of $110,000.00. The lights are 169 feet above the water. A misconception is that the lighthouse itself is 169 feet tall and the light can be seen for 16 nautical miles. It is built of steel reinforced concrete with three rings of embedded color. There is no spiral staircase as found in older lighthouses, but instead

a series of ships ladders with a total of 131 steps to the lantern gallery level. For the first five years, the lighthouse used carbon-arc mercury lamps housed in four 36inch reflectors, generating 70 million candle power, making the lights the brightest in the US and second brightest in the world. Currently, the lights are powered by four 1,000 watt halogen bulbs – each placed in a separate 24-inch reflector – that produce 2.5 million candle power, displaying four one-second “flashes” followed by six seconds of “blank”. In 2004, the lighthouse and surrounding property were deeded to the Town of Caswell Beach as part of the Federal Lands to Parks program.

1813 and a new lighthouse was commissioned to replace it. In 1817, Daniel S. Way built the new lighthouse, “Old Baldy,” for $15,915.45. It was originally built of soft red bricks, many of which were reused from the first lighthouse. When rebuilt it was then covered with a plaster mixture of sand and lime. It is 110 feet high and octagon in shape with walls five feet thick at the base. Old Baldy was deactivated in 1935, and for a brief period served as a Coast Guard radio tower before being abandoned to the elements. In 1988 the light was relit but no longer serves as an “official” navigational aid. It is the oldest standing lighthouse in North Carolina.

house. It is known as a first order lighthouse, which means it has the largest of seven Fresnel lens sizes. Its light can be seen for 18 nautical miles. The distinctive light sequence enables the lighthouse not only to warn mariners but also to help identify their locations. Like the other lighthouses on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, this one still serves as an aid to navigation. The beacon comes on automatically every evening at dusk and ceases at dawn. To distinguish the Currituck Beach Lighthouse from other regional lighthouses, its exterior was left unpainted and gives today’s visitor a sense of the multitude of bricks used to form the structure. The Currituck Beach Lighthouse was the last major brick lighthouse built on the Outer Banks. It has 220 steps, is 162 feet high and is made of approximately one million bricks.

national seashore. The frame buildings near the lighthouse that served as quarters to the keepers of the light are still standing.

BODIE ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE

www.outerbanks.com/ bodie-island-lighthouse.html In 1847 Mr. Francis Gibbons, of Baltimore, started construction on the original lighthouse for $5,000 but problems with location and design of the tower caused a ten year delay in construction. The tower was highly unstable and soon after it was completed; it began to lean toward the sea. By 1859 the Lighthouse had deteriorated and the Lighthouse Board secured a $25,000 appropriation from Congress to erect a new tower. This new tower was 80 feet tall and its lantern was a third-order Fresnel lens. In the fall of 1861, Confederate troops stacked explosives inside the tower and blew it apart. A third lighthouse was completed in 1871 partially with material left over from construction of a new tower at Cape Hatteras. The tower was then 156 feet with a first order Fresnel lens that made its light visible for 18 nautical miles The Bodie tower is painted with white and black horizontal bands. While some people (including North Carolinians not from the Outer Banks) pronounce the name with a long “o” sound, it is traditionally pronounced as body. This is derived from the original name of the area, which was “Bodies Island”, after the Body family from whom the land was purchased. Folklore would have you believe it is due to the number of dead sailors washed ashore from this portion of the Atlantic Ocean, which is known as the Graveyard

tallest sentinel in America at 210 feet. It was constructed in 1803 for $44,000. it was built with 1,250,000 bricks baked in kilns along the James River in Virginia and brought in scows into Cape Creek where it was hauled by oxen one mile to the building site in Buxton. Its light marked very dangerous shoals which extended from the cape for a distance of 10 nautical miles. The original tower was built of dark sandstone and retained its natural color. The original light consisted of 18 lamps; with 14-inch reflectors,. It was visible in clear weather for a distance of 18 miles. It weighs 6,250 tons and was built with no pilings under it - just a foundation built of heart pine. In 1999, the lighthouse was moved as the sea was threatening to undermine it. The lighthouse is now safely away from breaking waves. You can climb Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Fast, Easy & Delicious

Trax-to Go offers quick easy takeout in Oak Island BY: REBECCA JONES, PHOTO BY: KRIS BEASLEY

T

here are no railroad tracks on Oak Island, but there is a “station”to stop and get quick, tasty, to go, on your way thru- be it heading for work or home, the park, the beach, the boat, little league, soccer games, or the backyard party. Trax-to Go’s spelling is played off of train tracks. It is new to Oak Island and located at the corner of NE 48th Street and Oak Island Drive. The light grey building with the walk up window and is conveniently across from Middleton Park. It is uniquely distinguished by the huge authentic railroad crossing pole. Trax- to Go offers quick and easy take out fried fish, fried chicken, tasty hushpuppies and sides. Opening in June of this year, Trax is the brainchild of Blake and Robin Conklin. If you recognize the Conklin name, you most likely know it from Shagger Jacks Restaurant on Oak Island at 8004 East Oak Island Drive. Blake and Robin opened Shagger Jacks in 2009, where the motto is, “You Chill, We Grill”. The couple is now trying their hand at a new venture for the island. In the early stages, Robin asked Blake when he would have the time for something new. Blake equated it to having a second child: you make the time. Traxto Go has been a glimmer in Blake’s eye for years. He has been scouting locations to find the right spot to house a friendly fast paced, easy pick up for good food. It looks like Shagger Jacks has a little brother! One might ask if Blake has a long his-

tory in the restaurant business, but the restaurant business came with the Conklin’s move from Greensboro, North Carolina to Oak Island. What Blake does have is experience in big business. He was head engineer in the apparel business and has worked with machine patterns, plants and facilities in commercial construction. As Blake jokingly acknowledges he is a, self-described, old corporate fart. After the move to the coast, Blake didn’t want to work for anybody, but himself. With a background in engineering, Blake loves to develop stuff all the organizational structures. “I get bored easily, so I’m always looking for the next gig” Blake acknowledged. That mindset turned his interests to the daily functions of the re s t a u r a n t

business by building a business model to structure the operations of a restaurant. Blake is quick to recognize the importance of employees in the front and back of the house in the restaurant business. When referring to the success of Shagger Jacks, “it’s a great group of people that run it—a great team—that allows the restaurant to run itself”. Robin Conklin appreciates hard work. Chris Lail, has been the kitchen manager at Shagger Jacks for the last five years, and with the entrepreneurial spirit which Conklin thrives, he invited Lail to go

into business as part owner of Trax-to Go. “We want to take something simple and make it good” Blake explains. And good is fast and it is fried! Trax-to Go has 25 items on the menu where you can pick and choose checking offside boxes to build your meal. There are Chicken boxes with battered fried chicken, white meat or dark meat, wings, and chicken tenders. The fish boxes are your choice of one or two pieces of beer battered fried Alaskan white fish. All the boxes come with tater tots, hushpuppies and a side. The hushpuppies sound like a meal in themselves: a battered fried hushpuppy with creamed corn and jalapeño cheese. And take it from me, they do have a little kick. The fish and chicken are also available by loose and by the select piece making it easy to meet a variety of tastes and customizing your order. Everyone in the family loves the leg? No problem, you can order as many legs as you want. Other sides include, potato salad, coleslaw, chips and a moon pie and Pepsi products. “The idea is to keep it simple,” says Blake, “this is a family island, we want to provide easy, simple family meals where you can order,pick-up and be on your way in 15 minutes”. Blake hopes the concept will appeal to residents, the work force and vacationers alike. Next on Blake’s to do list is to get the functioning railroad pole operating, with bells and lights. He plans to install controls with a quarter slot, making it something of a showpiece, and monies collected will be donated to an area nonprofit. Trax-to Go is open seven days a week, 11a.m. to 9 p.m. Located at the corner of OKI Dr. and NE 48th St. 910-250-1535 - check them out on Facebook

HEALTH

Immunizations Not just for kids!

BY LESLIE RESCHLY, BSN ,RN

A

s August begins, “back to school” fever is everywhere! As parents double check those immunization records, it is a good thing for all adults to review their immunization status to determine if updates are needed.

Really! Immunizations are not just for infants and children. Despite the recent unsubstantiated claims of the dangers of immunizations, the availability of these products in our country leads to decreased illness and morbidity. If everyone in the community is immunized, the result is a decrease in epidemics which in turn protects those that are unable to be vaccinated as well as those in whom the vaccine was not effective. In other words, they promote your health! Get your shots to stay well! There are several (some relatively new) vaccine immunizations available for adults to promote wellness against certain diseases. Although no vaccine is 100% guaranteed it will often lessen the severity of the disease if it occurs. Please contact your health provider for specific recommendations but overall, consider the following frequent illnesses and the vaccines recommended for adults.

Many times I have heard people make the statement, “I got the flu vaccine and then got the flu and was so sick!” Because the vaccine is made from a killed or inactivated virus, there is no chance you will get the flu although it does take time for your body to develop fighting antibodies against the virus. You may however, experience muscle soreness, headache, fever and swelling at the injection site. Trust me, talk to someone who had the influenza virus and you will realize the benefit even with the side effects! This immunization is contraindicated (not advised) if you are allergic to eggs, have a history of a severe reaction to a previous immunization or are ill with a fever at the time of the vaccine. Typically covered by insurance, this vaccine rarely requires an order to obtain.

SHINGLES

The vaccine associated with Shingles continues to be advertised on many sources. Approximately 30% of Americans will develop Shingles or Herpes Zoster and about half of the cases occur after age 60. Shingles is a painful blistering red rash caused by reactivation of the latent varicella virus which caused you to TETANUS/ DIPHTHERIA /PERTUShave Chicken Pox as a SIS child. STREPTOCOCCUS PNEUMONIA

This is a bacterium which causes frequent illness in adults and children. A Pneumonia vaccine is currently available in two different forms for adults and often both types are indicated. This immunization helps to prevent complications from the bacteria which can cause blood, brain and lung infections such as pneumonia, meningitis and septicemia. Please consult your health care provider to see if either or both of these vaccines would be a good choice for you or if you need a booster. Children receive this as part of the suggested Immunization schedule and they are recommended for adults greater than 65. Currently, all of these vaccines are available locally. I spoke with Brad Narron, Registered Pharmacist at Galloway Sands Pharmacy in Southport who reported that the pharmacists on staff are immunizing daily. This year’s Influenza vaccine has not

yet been released but will be available. Also, Mr. Narron and his staff are able to check your insurance immediately and validate your insurance coverage to determine your financial responsibility for copay and administration fee. Narron notes that typically some vaccines require Part D Medicare coverage to be paid, if Medicare is your insurance. It is important to note that a prescription from your health care provider is needed for all vaccines except the Influenza. No appointment is necessary and all injections are given by licensed pharmacist staff. It is recommended that you wait approximately 15 minutes after your immunization to ensure there is no reaction. Although rare, this is a safety measure well worth your time so plan accordingly. Also, many pharmacies offer car-side service for persons with impaired mobility. Be sure to call if this is something you require. So, when you start seeing those BACK TO SCHOOL commercials, let it be a reminder to check your immunization status to see if you are currently up to date. Galloway Sands is located at 1513 N. Howe Street here in Southport. Please contact them at (910) 454-9090.

It’s a Roundup For a great cause! BY ALAN BEASLEY

S

ometimes you find yourself wanting to fish and you just don’t have the gumption to go.

Source: Flickr • Ben+Sam

It’s hot, the wind is blowing hard, or you just had a hard week at work and getting in a boat in the sun and heat just doesn’t appeal to you. You’d rather be in the A/C and cooling it. Well, welcome to normal! It’s rapidly reaching the dog days of summer and the heat is unbearable at times. I know — I’m there with you! The deal is though, the fish are biting! They are in the prime time to feed and it’s time to get it on if you want to catch some fish. The live bait has grown to a great size for catching either Flounder or Red Drum if you’re into that and the Ocean Pogies are and have been perfect size for catching King Mackerel or Spanish Mackerel. They are the key live bait needed to catch many of our local Fish. Mullets and Pogies are the main live bait used by most tournament fishermen. Speaking of tournaments, my favorite two tournaments are upon us. They are my favorites and are both worth supporting.

HERE IS THE SCOOP

The Sheriff John Ingram: Flatfish Roundup Tournament August 22nd at the Southport Marina This tournament is a fun tournament to

fish, that supports the re-election of Sheriff John Ingram. This one also benefits others as well. “The fish that are caught are kept and served at a fundraiser fish fry that takes place on August 28th from 11AM till 1PM. The proceeds support the members of the Sheriff Department and their families that have a life altering event” says Captain Laurie Watson. For example funds are used to support department families affected by house fire, injury, financial hardship or other worthy causes. The thing to remember here is that these are the folks that are out on the street, day and night, dealing with all kinds of crime, disaster support, injury, community support and so much more. They do this for a living and seldom do they get the kind of support they should from our community. In many cases you never know of the hardships they encounter themselves that deserve a financial helping hand so these funds can go a long way to help in times of need for a deputy suffering from an unfortunate event for example. I appreciate the job our Sheriff has done and the job each of his staff does on a regular basis. These people have the hardest job

I know of and they get very little praise for doing a great job for all of us. This tournament is a way to send a message of thanks as well as support for Mr. Ingram’s re-election. You’ll be able to meet and get to know these folks at the Captains meeting and on tournament day. These are our sons and daughters, friends and neighbors, all working to keep us safe every day! So let’s rally around them and make this the best Flatfish Round Up- to date! Oh and by the way, the phrase “Flatfish Roundup” came from the term used to describe the” Drug Dealer Roundup” that the Sheriff’s office has from time to time. I thought that was interesting because both “Roundups” can be a challenge especially since Flounder and Drug Dealers are really good at hiding and being hard to find. So here is another opportunity to use your fishing skills for a worthwhile cause. Find out more at www.sheriffjohningram. com/flatfishroundup or on their Facebook page. The Bay Creek Classic Flounder Tournament • September 19th the Oak Island Wildlife Boat Ramp The Bay Creek Classic Flounder Tournament is a Benefit Tournament for a local fishing legend and good friend of mine and many others, Mr. Brandon Matthews. If you’re a local fisherman that has been around for 20 years or more you probably

on September 19th at the Wildlife Boat Ramp on Fish Factory Road, Oak Island NC. There is always great food and fellowship at this event. Last year the community rallied around Brandon to help purchase a Sportsman Wheel Chair that gave Brandon the ability to stand upright as well as go over almost any terrain. At over $10,000 dollars, the money was raised by way of donations in only a few weeks! This was an amazing display of love and support for Brandon. It’s time to come together again this year to support Brandon. His health is not good right now so we may or may not see him this year but that won’t slow us down! Please find a friend with a boat, if you don’t have one and sign up for this Tournament. It’s so important to support this one by fishing, sponsoring, donating time or money to help with this event. Please visit the website at www.baycreekclassic.com or go to the Facebook page to find out more or to get involved. So for now go fish, good luck and be safe! Life is short, fish hard!

Sublime in St. James!

Retirement and Remodeling make for one happy couple. BY KRIS BEASLEY, ABBIE PROPST AND MICHAYLA FULLWOOD

R

alph and Kathie Caserta are amoung some of the original property owners of St. James Plantation. They purchased their lot in 1992, when the streets weren’t paved and “you had to hope that they were gonna do what they said they were gonna do!” joked Ralph.

St. James Plantation was a vision of Homer Wright that began in the 1980’s with his partners, John Atkinson and Claude Smith. In 1991, it officially broke ground and is now home to over 4,500 property owners.

Ralph and Kathie are originally from Waldwick, New Jersey. Ralph owned a real estate company in New Jersey and headed up the retirement division, which is what led him to Southport. “I was showing some folks Magnolia Greens and I saw

the billboards for St. James Plantation advertising Golf, Beaches and more! I said, let’s go check it out!” explained Ralph. Before they new it, the Casertas had purchased a lot in St. James to eventully build their retirement home. Which they built 8 years later in 2000. Over the course of 14 years, Ralph and Kathie used their home in St. James for holidays and family vacations. It wasn’t until May of 2014 that they retired and became permanent residents. Over a year after living in their dream home, they realized that they wanted to make some changes. The screened in porch that ran across the back of their home, was not working for them. It was too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. But more than that, the dust and pollen created real problems. They decided to enclose their screened porch and set out to find the right man for the job. They received several price quotes and were deciding on which company to hire, when one of their friends, Madge came to them with a referral. Madge had been eating lunch at the Southport Tea House and Cafe and was talking about Ralph and Kathie’s remodeling project. The owner, Sherri French happen to overhear the conversation and mentioned that her husband, Greg was a Contractor and owner of Southport Custom Home Exteriors. Madge passed along Greg’s contact information to Ralph and Kathie. Kathie convinced Ralph to meet with Greg. “He showed up the next day and it felt very comfortable with him from the get go!” explained Kathie. “He was constructive and made suggestions that none of the other guys did.” Ralph added. For example, Greg suggested using 3/4 Wainscoting, “If you are going to do a project, you better do it right!” Ralph quoting what Greg said during their initial meeting. While Kathie and Ralph had an idea of how they wanted to update their sunroom, Greg really helped them through the process. “We had a budget and we wanted to stick with it. Greg helped us create our vision. For example, the windows. I had originally wanted them to go all the way down to the bottom of the floor. Greg suggested that we not do that, and I am so glad.” says Kathie. Greg thought the gliding side windows, that move left to right and not up and down like most windows would be a nice touch. And while they are custom made, they are no more expensive. “And they do not have the crosshair slats like double hung windows.” Greg explains.

Greg’s vow to make sure the new addition looked like it had always been there is upheld. g e The flooring of the sunroom had the appearance of real sweathered wood and I was surprised to learn that it was -actually ceramic tile. Kathy shares how Greg was instruomental in the flooring as well. “I didn’t want wood and when Greg mentioned tile I thought of the traditional dsquare tile. But we went and looked at a sample, it hit me mlike it looked like barn board and I just loved it!” e It was important to Greg that the addition to the Caser” ta’s home did not stick out and look different from the rest 4of the home. He said, “Whatever we add on, I want it to rlook like it’s always been there!” r

Greg made sure to match the new chair rail in the addition with that existing design of the adjourning living room. Another nice touch was the addition of transoms in the sunroom, mimicking the original transom above the entry into the new sunroom. It was nice to see such give and take between homeowner and contractor. Kathie had an heirloom 1917 antique stove that her brother had given to her from his home in New Hampshire. Finding a place to display the stove was hard until the addition says Kathie, “Now it is a focal point!”

I was curious if approval for adding on to an existing home in St. James was a difficult venture. “The POA at St. James bent over backwards. They were phenomenal.” states Ralph. However, Brunswick County was a little tougher to work with, but with the help of the St. James staff they got their plans approved. It’s been over a year since Kathie and Ralph have been living full time in their retirement dream home. The newly enclosed sunroom has proven to be the cherry on the top of their new lifestyle. “We have a

large family. We have three children and seven grandchildren. Food is a big part of our lives. We love to grill out and use our porch. The new enclosed sunroom really helps us bring the outside in.” says Kathie. I asked Kathie and Ralph to tell me what were some of the things that they had come to love about Southport since becoming full time residents. Ralph said the Yacht Basin in Southport reminded him of being a kid, “I am from Hampton Bays, Long Island and I used to watch the fish boats come in through the inlet and dock and we would go down to the dock and get our lobsters, crabs or fish. I thought, geez...this is just like Shinnecok Bay. Kathie agreed that she likes the seaport charm of Southport. Ralph being Italian and an excellent cook, I was curious if he and Kathie had taken to any Southern fare. “Shrimp and grits and fresh fish!” they both exclaimed. They had recently enjoyed some Golden Tile Fish that Ralph said was the best fish he had ever eaten! It was nice to see such a happy couple, enjoying the fruits of their labor. And so pleased with the work that Greg French of Southport Custom Homes completed on their newly enclosed sunroom. It was heartwarming and hopeful to see the evolution of their retirement plan over the 21 year span. I think the founders of St. James would be proud and Ralph sums it up best, “Homer’s plan is coming together! My hat is off to him!”

A true Italian, Ralph points out his garden where he grows everything from eggplant to oregano.

Rebecca Loebe, 3rd round finalist of The Voice will perform on Thursday, August 6th.

Not very often but that is changing right here in the Southport area. The idea is not a new one but it is making a comeback in a strong way with Circle Entertainment and local promoter Ken Perrin. For over 19 years, Ken has produced mid level talent concerts from all over the country through a summer concert series in Oakland, Maryland. His many connections brings in talent from Nashville, Seattle, Austin, St. Augustine and as far away as Canada. The concept of a house concert is a simple one: Sign up to welcome touring artists into your home. Add great food and drink and listen to some great music. And, the best thing is that you don’t have to worry about whether you’ll have a good seat since the show is literally in your backyard. Artists are paid for their performances by a donation of $30.00 per couple or $15.00 for a single seat. Each couple or person is asked to bring a dish of food and your favorite beverage to the event. It turns into a nice party with excellent live music from Singer/Songwriters hired by Circle Entertainment with an average attendance of 30-50 people. The funds go toward paying the Artist and any remaining funds go to a local charity or food bank. Artists usually stay overnight with the host homeowner or

Ken and gets treated to breakfast from Locals Restaurant in Southport. Ken tries to produce several events per month from January - October and also provides the sound system and folding chairs. If you are interested in hosting an event, you need to have a nice sized living room, great room or other large space. During the warmer months, the events can be held outside on patios, gardens or poolside. Another option to consider is hosting an event at your business. Ken has produced events for local businesses such as: Emmi Lu’s, Howe Outrageous, Grape and Ale, The Amuzu Theatre and The Lois Jane Inn. “Many events are now being hosted in the St. James area. It’s really catching on in a big way there.” says Ken. Each concert provides a wonderful option for hearing great live music and meeting others in our area. The next concert Ken has booked is Thursday, August 6th featuring singer, Rebecca Loebe. Loebe made it to the 3rd round finals of the TV series, The Voice. If you are interested in attending a concert or hosting an event contact Ken at: keyfla@gmail.com. Do yourself a favor and reserve a seat at one of these shows. I’m sure you’ll become a fan and might decide to become a host yourself!
