ON THE COVER

LETTER FROM THE STAFF We would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season! We are so thankful for your support and we look forward to bringing the best of what Southport, Oak Island, Bald Head Island, St. James and Boiling Spring Lakes has to offer in 2017. Merry Christmas To All...and to All a Goodnight!

We’re not really sure which one of us took the picture on the cover. We took it a few years ago, when we had grandiose dreams of selling necklaces and artwork with our photographs. And I have this thing for Santas, so naturally I wanted a picture of the very first Santa Jeffrey gave me. We love seeing Santa out of a snowy scene, because even Santa needs a vacation in paradise. —John, Lisa and Jeffrey Stites

CHRISTMAS CHOIR CONCERT – OCEAN VIEW UNITED METHODIST CHURCH This year’s Christmas Choir Concert features some old familiar favorites, some performed with a new twist, and uplifting religious music to bring to life the tale of the birth of Christ. The concert includes music from the OVUMC Concert Choir, soloists, visual effects and pianist and music director Greg Walker. All are invited to come for a fun-filled evening celebrating the birth of Jesus. “We always begin the concert with a few secular numbers to get everybody loosened up and prepared to hear the message of Christmas through song,” music director Greg Walker said. “This year I am incorporating a new computer-based light sequencer during the Trans-Siberian Orchestra number that will hopefully add some new ‘wow factor’ to the production.” Admission is free, though a love offering will be taken to help support the church’s music ministry. Song choices include “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day,” “Fantasia Noel Medley” and more. There are three chances to see the concert -- Friday, December 9th at 7 p.m., Saturday, December 10th at 7 p.m. and Sunday, December 11th at 4:30 p.m. “We do our best to entertain and get everyone in the Christmas spirit, but the real reason we do this is to remind everyone that Jesus is the reason for the season,” Walker said.

TRINITY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH LOVEFEAST Southport – December 18th

Trinity United Methodist Church has started a new Christmas Tradition -- a Moravian style-Lovefeast. In the Lovefeast there is a sense of unity and a fellowship of sharing with family and friends through music and a simple meal. The Lovefeast meal includes a sweetened bun and creamed coffee, which dieners (German for “servers”) serve to participants. The service of scripture and song is led by the choir and band. The evening concludes with everyone lighting a handmade beeswax candle that fills the church with a warm glow. The first Lovefeast was in Germany on August 13, 1727, following the renewal of the Moravian Church. It is reminiscent of the common meal partaken in love and fellowship by the early church as described in the book of Acts. This simple service provides an ideal setting for breaking human and religious divides. Love feasts nourish the soul, give participants pause and inspiration. The Lovefeast will be December 18th at 6p.m. Trinity United Methodist Church is located at 209 E. Nash Street in Southport. Check www.southporttrinity.org or call (910) 4576633 for more information. 1

Listen Up Brunswick County! Season Four – 2017

Since we began in 2013, we felt it was important to do more than just bring noteworthy music to Brunswick County. Our mission, Good Music – Good Deeds, reflects that belief and commitment.

Good Deeds!

For 2017 we have selected Hope Harbor as the recipient of our charitable donations. This local non-profit organization provides advocacy services, prevention/ education and shelter for women and children. Hope Harbor has been a beacon of hope for victims of domestic violence for more than thirty years.

Good Music!

Our 2017 season launches at Brunswick Community College on Saturday evening, January 21, with Joe Crookston, a singer-songwriter, guitarist, fiddler, and slide player who was named the 2016 Folk Alliance International Artist In Residence. On Sunday, February 19, we are pleased to present Harpeth Rising, a trio of classically trained musicians playing original music rooted in the singer/songwriter tradition and wrapped in three-part vocal harmonies reminiscent of both Appalachia and Medieval Europe. Crowd favorites The Kennedys join us for their third return engagement on Friday, March 24. This folk-rock

husband and wife duo features Pete on guitar, electric sitar, bass and ukulele and Maura on guitar and ukulele. The 2017 season concludes on Sunday, April 9, with Canadian singer-songwriter James Keeleghan performing. His music bridges traditional folk music with roots revival and Celtic music, with a focus on social justice and tragic historic events.

Happy Holidays!

With the approach of the Holiday Season, it’s time to think about stuffing those stockings. Listen Up Brunswick County can help with your shopping and here are two ideas for you. Concert Tickets. They will fit nicely in anyone’s stocking! Even better, how about 4 tickets—one for each of our 2017 performances? Buy them before December 31 and get 4 for the price of 3. Limited Edition CD. What the Heck is a Maggie? And how do I get one?

STORY BY: KRIS BEASL EY | PHOTO BY: PATRICK MCGOWAN

our years ago, when I started Southport Magazine. I wrote out of list of goals I wanted to accomplish within my first year. The last item on that list was the creation of the Maggie Awards.

The Maggie’s is our annual reader’s poll, where we would ask interesting questions about our community and acknowledge the businesses, people and places that ranked the highest. Questions that make people actually “think” about their response and maybe get a chuckle in the process. I came up with the name Maggie as a spin on the Emmy’s and since we are a magazine, the Maggie Awards seemed fitting. I wanted The Maggie Awards to be a celebration of local businesses and citizens in Southport, Oak Island, Bald Head Island, Boiling Springs and St. James. But

more than anything, I wanted the Maggie Awards to be something that people would appreciate and deem an honor to receive. I remember feeling so nervous the first year. “What if no one votes?” “What if no one comes?” But you did vote and you did come! Each year, the Maggie Awards seem to get better and better and it makes me feel so happy and proud. It is my hope that every business will receive a Maggie Award over time! We will continually change the polling questions and keep the Maggie Awards exciting and engaging. My aim is to spread the love! 1

Wrap it Up!

Holiday gifts wrapped in style – without breaking the bank STORY BY: AMI BROWN

B

rown paper packages, tied up with string. These are a few of my favorite things. When it comes to wrapping presents this holiday season, I’ve found a few simple things you can do to make your packages look amazing – without spending much money. Let’s face it, all that lovely wrapping paper and bows just end up in the trash anyway.

source: makeanddocrew.com

Use what you’ve got! Most of us have a junk drawer full of little knick- knacks, broken parts, and random objects - perfect for decorating the tops of gifts. With a little gold or silver spray paint or glitter, these things could be the perfect topper. For instance: buttons, old keys, twine, single dangle earring, mardi-gras beads, and old piece of lace or scrap material. Let Nature In! Take a look outside – small evergreen cuttings make a great bow replacer. Little holly berries, a bundle of twigs – spray painted, cinnamon sticks or leaf can make the perfect addition. No need to spend money on a bow when you can make one yourself. Scrap yarn can be turned into a pompom and tied right on top.

Print it out! If you are at a loss for paper – get on the internet and google search “free printable holiday paper”. You will get lots of choices. Instead of wrapping an entire present with a printed design – let’s face it, that’s expensive, just print one page of designs, and cut out strips or vignettes and glue them on. Remember sometimes less is more when it comes to design. Use your own creativity! If you have a little bit of creativity you can sponge paint a cute pattern, using polka-dots is the easiest. Start with your brown paper, newsprint or tissue paper. Use the eraser end of an and old pencil as the dotter, sparingly dabbed in paint. You can also stencil small designs on or just get a pack of holiday

stickers and place them on. Some ideas for unique wrapping paper includes: old sheet music, old pages of a torn book, newspaper, and old shirt, notebook paper, paper bag, magazine pages, paper doilies, wall paper samples (or scraps), or scrapbooking paper. These can be painted as little or as much as you want. Keep it simple, stick to one or two colors for the best effect. Black and white makes a stunning statement and looks beautiful under the tree.

Plan for next year! Save all your Christmas cards this year, because they make the perfect tags for next year. Just cut out the image on the front – usually people only write on the inside page anyway. They are one of a kind decorations and a nice way to recycle. When you use that hole punch, instead of dumping all those “dots” save them in a little zip lock bag to use for “confetti” decorations on the tops of your packages or even on your centrepiece. 1

RE/MAX Southern Coast Open for Business in Southport STORY BY: AMANDA CARBONELL PHOTOS BY: TJ DRECH SEL

ocated in downtown Southport, RE/MAX Southern Coast is the newest addition to the Brunswick County real estate marketplace. Opening in August, the company already has attracted a core group of the area’s top agents. The company specializes in Southport, St. James, Caswell Beach, Oak Island, Bald Head Island, Boiling Spring Lakes, Supply, and Winding River in Bolivia. Partners Robert Carroll, Donna Findlay and Fred Flieler chose Southport as home base for the company as it draws traffic for all of south central Brunswick County. Robert and Donna have long been recognized as top performers in area real estate listings and sales. Their unique business relationship and personal styles offer their clients an unmatched advantage when navigating the sale or purchase of a property. Their desire to take their business relationship to a new level culminated in adding Donna’s husband, Fred Flieler as a third 20 Southport Magazine / DECEMBER 2016 / www.SouthportMag.com

partner in opening RE/MAX Southern Coast. Fred and Donna have been longtime investors in real estate in Oak Island, Wilmington and Florida. Following Fred’s retirement from PepsiCo where he held executive positions in Canada, the U.S. and Europe, the couple chose Oak Island to build their oceanfront home. Since that time, they have added several rental properties and prime residential lots to their portfolio. “We visited friends living here prior to my retirement and decided to make this our home keeping our condo in downtown Toronto as a second residence. We both saw the potential for growth in this area and felt it was the kind of place that we would enjoy. We haven’t been disappointed,” said Fred. Partnering with Donna and Robert Carroll in opening RE/MAX Southern Coast seemed a natural progression. Fred brings a significant amount of business, management and financial expertise to the team. “Donna and Rob-

ert have been very successful as a sales team for several years now. Through their reputation and professional network in the market, we have been able to attract some of the area’s best and most experienced agents who share our vision of a work environment that is energetic, professional and positive,” said Fred. Another key player on the RE/MAX Southern Coast management team is Office Manager Judy Houck. A native North Carolinian, Judy and her husband, who is also named Fred, moved to Southport eleven years ago from Marina del Ray, California.

“We loved the town on our first visit. While keeping its quaint charm, Southport is a vibrant community. You can relax or be as active as you choose to be. It’s all here.” —Judy Houck She is instrumental to the smooth operation of the office and interacts with prospective clients providing administrative support to the company’s agents. “Working with Robert, Donna, Fred and the agents is rewarding for me professionally and sometimes, just plain fun. It’s a lively, high energy environment that we all enjoy.” Judy’s background as a property manager and an office manager makes her a perfect fit. “Judy always has a ready smile as well as an exceptional work ethic. We are fortunate to have her,” said Robert Carroll. The agents at RE/MAX Southern Coast represent a “Who’s Who” in area real estate sales. For some, real estate is a second full-time career, while others focused on the industry from the beginning. The group includes a former executive at IBM, a Product Team Leader from General Motors and even a retired Air Force officer who served at the Pentagon. Most importantly, they each have developed their real estate careers purposefully and embrace the shared vision behind RE/MAX Southern Coast to be open, honest and focused on their clients needs, whether buyer or seller.

Jerr y Biffle

Jerry Biffle and wife, Pamela, relocated to St. James from Charlotte fifteen years ago after his long career with IBM. They lived in several cities during that period from New York to San Jose and always knew they would like to end up in the Southeast. Always open to adventure, Jerry and Pamela visited all of the U. S. National Parks over a two-year period prior to settling in to their new life. Initially Pamela, who is also an interior designer, was in real estate with Jerry helping out a little. After their move to St. James, that changed. Jerry got his real estate license in 2001 and discovered a real love and talent for the business. He now sells more resale homes in St. James than any other area agent. “I love the community and I guess it shows. After moving so many times in my career, the sense of community that St. James offers really appealed to us. It’s an active community with literally dozens of clubs for nearly any interest…history, the arts…you name it.” Making the decision to join RE/MAX Southern Coast was an easy one. “I knew Robert and Donna and liked them personally. I felt like they were the type of people that I could work with plus I am a believer in the RE/MAX business model. It was just the right match for me.” Jerry and Pamela have two children and three grandchildren. While not at work, you’re likely to find them either on the tennis court or golf course.

Bill Carmichael

Bill Carmichael

Atlanta natives, Bill and Pam Carmichael moved to the area in 2004 from Fairfax, Virginia. Avid travelers, they spent a full year driving throughout the United States in an RV focusing on visits to national parks. www.SouthportMag.com / DECEMBER 2016 / Southport Magazine 21

ADVERTORIAL When choosing a permanent home following his retirement as an executive with a national remodeling trade association in the D. C. area, climate played a key role. “It was 30° in Northern Virginia and 70° in Myrtle Beach. We thought that was the area where we should start looking.” It wasn’t long before the couple discovered Winding River Plantation. “We bought property early on and later built our home.” Becoming a Real Estate professional seemed a natural next step. Bill had held management positions in the “shelter” industry including furniture manufacturing and window and door manufacturing prior to moving to the trade association. That background gave him an affinity for the housing market. The move to Winding River led Bill and Pam to work together as the Carmichael Team. “We don’t ‘sell’ anything. We do our best to listen to what the client wants and help them find it. We are fortunate in having most of our listings come to us by referral from other satisfied sellers.” Joining RE/MAX Southern Coast is the next chapter in the team’s real estate career. “The RE/MAX concept is the best for me as an agent and the idea of a fresh start with a new enterprise was very appealing.” The couple have two children and four grandchildren.

“Donna and I have worked together very successfully for several years. We both felt the market needed an aggressive and forward thinking option. Luckily, we have attracted experienced agents that were also looking for the same thing. With the global resources that RE/MAX offers coupled with the highly qualified team of agents that have joined with us, we are very confident about the long term success of RE/MAX Southern Coast.” Robert and his wife, Michelle, live in a restored historic home in the downtown area. “Moving to Southport from Virginia was a great decision both professionally and personally. We both love being able to walk a block or two to enjoy the waterfront, great dining and shopping. And now that we are proud parents of Reighan Elisabeth, life just keeps getting better!”

Robert Carroll

Partner and Broker in Charge Robert Carroll began his real estate career in 2006. He has sold millions of dollars of Real Estate since that time making him one of the area’s top agents. His drive, passion and expertise made moving from agent to broker/owner a logical path that has given Robert the ability to put more of his innovative ideas into action. “At RE/MAX Southern Coast, we don’t want to be a ‘business as usual’ organization.” Robert believes in staying ahead of the curve utilizing the most relevant industry technology to ensure the company’s listings get the most effective exposure to potential buyers while helping buyers find the home that is just the right fit for their lifestyle. 22 Southport Magazine / DECEMBER 2016 / www.SouthportMag.com

If you notice someone running in St. James, it just might be resident John Dorazio. An avid runner, John runs 4-5 miles at least three times a week. To celebrate his birthday every year, he takes on a 10K for fun. John spent his career on the move, too. While working for an international telecommunications company where he spent the bulk of his professional life, he made nine moves over 25 years including a stint in London. Born in Washington, DC, he and his wife Mary Jayne moved to the area in 2013 and launched his real estate career. “Although I spent most of my career in finance, my real love has always been sales. I have two former colleagues who are RE/MAX agents in other markets. They both encouraged me to get my license. It’s the best advice I’ve ever gotten!” John particularly likes working with buyers. “It’s exciting to help someone realize their dream in moving to this area. Finding the right house that is right for their needs is fulfilling for me.” John is sold on the energy at the RE/MAX Southern Coast office, too. “The agents are eager to help each other and work as a team. It is a strong office, both financially and in leadership expertise.” His wife, Mary Jayne has a background in interior design and he often brings her in to consult with clients on the possibilities of a property. “She’s my secret weapon. She can turn dull into fantastic.” The couple has two sons.

Gail Lendvoyi

Donna Findlay and Fred Flieler

Donna Findlay

RE/MAX Southern Coast partner Donna Findlay is a native of Toronto, Canada. She first moved to the United States in the late 1980’s when husband, Fred, was relocated to Dallas. Since that time, she and Fred have also lived in London, Bern, Switzerland and now, Oak Island.

“We all have different needs in a home at different stages of our lives. Managing moves through years of corporate relocations has given me a perspective on what makes a particular home work.” Her former career in advertising and market research is also an asset in determining the best strategies for sellers to maximize their home’s potential. “Whether it’s a two bedroom condominium or a 5,000 square foot home, there is always the right buyer for a property. Listening to what a buyer needs as well as wants is the key to making the right match.” As a real estate investor as well as high volume agent, Donna learned early on the value of staging a property properly. “An appealing, clutter-free presentation is the key to giving a home the competitive advantage.” She personally stages many of the company’s listings adding the “wow” factor. “We are very proud of the team of agents that have joined RE/MAX Southern Coast. When you list your home with any of us, be assured that we will market your home aggressively using a mix of online and print options and employing some of the areas best photographers and videographers to properly showcase your property.” Donna and Fred have two children and three grandchildren.

Gail Lendvoyi

Prior to coming into the office, agent Gail Lendvoyi starts her mornings in downtown Southport enjoying the early morning light at the waterfront. “It makes me feel renewed. I collect my thoughts for the day and I’m then ready to head to work.” Love of the water lead Gail and her husband, Chuck, to relocate to the area, although she says her husband would argue for the great golf courses. A successful RE/MAX agent in her native Michigan since 1990, following her career working in management positions at General Motors, Gail has found a new home in St. James as well as a new home with RE/MAX Southern Coast. “There isn’t a house I don’t like or can’t come up with ideas to fix up. When we found our St. James home, it needed work but we both loved the neighborhood and all it offers. I also love to garden and have had to learn about plants and shrubs that work here because, of course, the climate and growing seasons are quite different in Michigan.”

Gail has become active in her new community and volunteers with Habitat for Humanity as well as the American Cancer Society’s “Look Good, Feel Better” program. She joined RE/MAX Southern Coast for several reasons. “First of all, it’s a good group of people which is important to me. They are friendly, warm and energetic which makes it a great work environment. And, the owners share the same business values that I do.” Gail and Chuck have five children and four grandchildren. www.SouthportMag.com / DECEMBER 2016 / Southport Magazine 23

Martin and Diann Sauble with best friend, Cami

Diann Sauble

Diann Sauble knows coastal markets. Relocating to St. James after nearly 30 years as a realtor specializing in the Jersey Shore, she found that perfect blend of climate, location and amenities that the community offers. “I began my Real Estate career with a friend. She lasted three weeks and I’ve lasted 30 years!” While her husband Martin, a retired educator, has found his relaxation on the golf course, Diann continues to pursue her passion for matching the right home with the right buyer.

“It’s a big responsibility to help someone find the perfect fit in a home. I never tire of having a prospective buyer walk in a home and say ‘wow.’ There are some great communities in our area… Palmetto Creek, Winding River, South Harbour, and St. James to name a few. Every buyer is unique and my job is to listen and learn what they are really looking for,” said Diann. Making the move to RE/MAX Southern Coast was a perfect fit for Diann as well. “I worked with both Donna and Robert when I first moved to the area about seven years ago. Joining the team just made sense to me due to the combination of the RE/MAX name recognition, marketing strength, office leadership and group of agents that have come together. It’s especially important when listing a home. The tools that we provide can really make buyers take notice.” Diann enjoys a run in the neighborhood with her Golden Retriever, Cami and traveling with Martin. The couple has three daughters and two granddaughters. 24 Southport Magazine / DECEMBER 2016 / www.SouthportMag.com

Denise and Lt. Colonel Paul Shaefer

Paul Schaefer

Lt. Colonel Paul Schaefer has had an impressive military career. He worked in information technology for the Air Force including a stint at the Pentagon working for the Joint Chiefs of Staff while earning two master’s degrees along the way. He and his wife, Denise, moved to St. James in 2013. “Being in the military, we moved about every two years. Discovering the St. James lifestyle, its sense of community and friendly neighbors with a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences makes it a great place for us.” After his retirement from the military, Paul lived in New Hampshire where he invested in “flipping” houses acquiring a broad knowledge of home construction and remodeling. After earning his real estate license and moving south, he has never looked back.

“When working with home buyers unfamiliar with our area, I typically take them on a what I call an ‘educational tour’ to expose them to all the area offers. Sometimes we cover a lot of geography based on what I learn from them about their ideal location and budget. I show in both New Hanover and Brunswick counties regularly.” On joining RE/MAX Southern Coast, Paul first of all notes the sense of camaraderie in the office. “Coming from a military background, that is very important to me. It feels like a team here. A team that is professional and works hard, but also one that I enjoy socially as well. The atmosphere is motivating and uplifting.” Paul and Denise have a son and a daughter.

Suzanne Williams

Suzanne Williams

Suzanne Williams early career was in sales for a large industrial printing press manufacturer in Chicago and San Francisco following her graduation from the Rochester Institute of Technology. After her marriage to husband, Tom, the couple lived in New York City prior to their move to Fairfield County, CT where she began her career in real estate in 1995. Suzanne soon became a top producing agent and the recipient of numerous awards based on her performance. Suzanne and Tom relocated to St. James in 2008 after his retirement from the financial services industry. She initially worked for the developer and then moved to real estate sales. “I know St. James very well…beginning as a member of the development team, as an agent focusing on resales and of course, as a resident.” The lifestyle in the area is a key selling point for Suzanne. “I’m a fitness nut. The climate plays a big role for me. It allows you to golf, boat or just enjoy the outdoors nearly year round. You can be as active as you want to be here.” Although Suzanne has been in the market for several years, she recently made the decision to join RE/MAX Southern Coast due primarily to the culture it represents. “My beliefs about how I conduct my business and my personal goals aligned with RE/MAX Southern Coast. It’s exciting to be a part of a new venture. There are a lot of great new ideas and positive attitudes that motivate us all.” Suzanne and her husband Tom have three children.

Stephanie Spencer’s grandparents bought a second home on Oak Island in the 1960’s. She spent a large part of the summer during her childhood roaming the island with her siblings and cousins. “Oak Island just makes my heart happy. I still believe that it is a ‘hidden gem’ on the coast. With its south facing beaches, the sunsets are just spectacular.” Stephanie made the area her permanent home nearly seven years ago after relocating from Charlotte. She attended East Carolina University where she studied interior design and also worked at an engineering firm that designed planned communities. “I recently purchased my first investment property and my Dad and I completely remodeled the house in four months. I have an eye and great imagination. There are so many opportunities here for investors as well as people that are looking for a vacation home that may just need a little fixing up.” Since getting her real estate license five years ago, Stephanie Stephanie Spencer has found the perfect career. “I’ve always believed in hard work. But, when you love your job, it really isn’t work, is it? I especially enjoy working with veterans helping them find a home and secure financing.” She is a gifted swimmer and was a lifeguard and swim instructor for many years. “I’ve taught everyone from a three year old to an 89 year old!” She joined RE/MAX Southern Coast because of its superior technological support and finding all of the resources of a big company in a warm, family atmosphere.

RE/MAX Southern Coast…Smart Move.

sense of humor and outgoing personality. Emile grew up in Greenville, South Carolina but moved around enough to pepper his talent with many interesting elements and a range of international cultural influences. One of his acquired skills is being able to play music by ear! “It took two years of arduous, disciplined practice to train my ear to do something that some amateur musicians do automatically. Yet, as odd as it may seem, many musicians, vastly well-trained and e classical enjoying a superb technique, cannot play m a simple song without consulting the sheet o music. I was one of those. I intuitively knew that there was something very wrong with this picture, and decided to do something about it.” “The very first tune I embarked on was ‘Blue Moon’. I already knew the melody, but had never played it without reading the music. I just hunt-and-punched my way around for a week or so till I made some sense of it. I began to understand how playing-from-listening actually worked. After that remarkable achievement, I followed by learning one song after another - although I still took books to the piano lounge where I was playing, just in case and began to wean myself of the written page. I was encouraged to learn to read, “fake books” and start to improvise over the chord symbols. Anyway, now, years later, I play everything except classical pieces by ear. It just gives you more freedom.” Emile has been a student at Furman University, where he studied music, and then Baylor University where he studied for two more years. He earned his Bachelor of Music Degree from Texas Tech. He was a cho- rus teacher in St. Thomas and a member of e a Calypso band called “The Castaways”. r He moved to Sussex, England where he played pubs and restaurants. He also was a - member of a house band in Denver, Buddy d Brown and the Bittersuite all before head- ing to LA to play for dance classes, acting

seminars, actor/singer auditions, and in various piano lounges. It was here that he became one of the house pianists for the Comedy Store. He worked there for six years. He performed with well-known entertainers such as Jay Leno, David Letterman, and Robin Williams, among others. He was a featured performer at the 1984 Summer Olympics, playing “Rhapsody in Blue.” It was also here that he studied the writing of comedy (an ability he was to use many years later to write his own show) and learned to play for comedy improv troupes. With the freedom of playing by ear and the experience he gathered over the years, Emile delivers a performance of classical caliber mixed with well-loved melodies and a touch of humor. If you and your family are looking for an evening of entertainment and musical talent, this is one performance you don’t want to miss. It’s a great way to get in the holiday spirit and celebrate this special time of year. For tickets and information, please call 910.755.7416 or visit Odell Williamson Auditorium. Adult tickets are $29.00, Seniors and student tickets are $27.00, children 12 and under are $10.00. Tickets are on sale until December 8, 2016 7:00 PM. 1

BIZ Q & A

Arlene Minchew and Bethany Agostini providing superb customer service and fine clothing at Ropa.

ROPA’s MotherDaughter Duo

Keeping Southport a step above, when it comes to fashion! STORY BY: LESLIE FOSTER

I

t was 27 years ago with a table at the Old City Market in historical downtown Wilmington that ROPA was born. That same year, they quickly moved to a location on Front Street and nine years later opened a second location in Southport. What started as unique, hand-crafted items from around the world slowly evolved into the beautiful and sophisticated eclectic mix of goods and hand-picked lines that are carried today.

Q: Bethany, How did your Mother, Arlene begin to chose the name? A: The name comes from Bethany; ROPA means clothing in Spanish.

Q: The clothing in your boutique speaks to the well-dressed, and style savy buyer. What labels do you carry and what flies out the front door? A: We carry Habitat, comfy USA, Alembika, cut loose, Wooden Ships, P.U.R.E., and Kleen. All are great sellers. That is why we have carried all of these lines for many years.

Q: You sell necklaces made with Murano glass beads. They are modern and fun! How do you choose your Jewelry?

A: We try to choose jewelry that is original, unusual and that pairs well with our style of clothing.

Q: Cozy, cashmere? Socks! Yum, I’m sold! How much? A: Socks range from $15-25/pair--from crew to boot socks.

Q: What are the similarities or differences in inventorying, space and clientele between the Southport location and the Front Street Location?

A: Both locations have a unique but similar sophisticated look. Both stores cater to women who value style, comfort, and fit.

Q: Some of the jackets you carry have an asymmetrical cut. What body type do they flatter? A: The asymmetrical cut is a current look that flatters most figures.

Q: Will you describe your typical customer?

A: Women who are active in their communities, extensive travelers, and are very social. She wants to be comfortable but always look stylish. She trusts ROPA to give her the personal attention required to always look her best.

Q: What would you say is the one, go to piece that flatters anyone who tries it on? A: You can’t go wrong with a black v-neck tunic.

Q: Sell me the perfect outfit for the holidays! What would you recommend besides the usual “Little Black Dress?” A: Anything from comfyUSA is edgy, artsy, and sophisticated and perfect for a holiday party.

Q: My mother is coming to town. I would describe her as Cosmopolitan and elegant. She is petite, blonde and favors classic, well-made clothes. How would you style her? (PS - She is 90 but looks and lives like she’s 75!) A: I would put her in a crisp white blouse from Habitat with a Teresa Goodall vintage-beaded necklace and a Habitat travel pant.

Taste the Olive Mediterranean Magic!

STORY AND PHOTOS BY: AMI BROWN

ore than a simple wine store, nestled within The Grape and Ale, is the ultimate Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar Mecca that is Taste the Olive. Wow! When I visited owner, David Andersen, I realized just how much I didn’t know about olive oil! He lives and breathes his passion and knows more about the topic than probably anyone else in the region. His enthusiasm so apparent when we chatted, his goal is to educate the consumer and provide healthier food options. Davis grew up around food and the restaurant business. His parents and other family members were in the food service industry, he started washing dishes at the tender age of 13. After culinary school Dave was a gourmet chef in Raleigh for more than 18 years. With an established Taste the Olive for the past six years in Wilmington, David decided that teaming up with The Grape and Ale was the perfect option.

none,” David tells me. Did you know that olive oil can be a substitute for butter? It’s such a healthier choice, less fat, no calories and full of anti-oxidants and rich flavor. When you visit Taste the Olive – that’s exactly what you do – you get to taste it before you buy. David knows just how to pair it with the right food and drink combination for a unique learning experience every time. Olive Oil can be used in so many ways and has countless recipe options. It’s perfect for marinating proteins, delicious in quinoa, and of course in salads and on bruschetta. The balsamic vinegars are just as versatile. It’s naturally sweet, and a nice

alternative for diabetics – low in sugar. A tasty compliment to waffles, pancakes or anything you want to add a little special pizazz. One of the most unique products is a black and white truffle oil. This can be put on popcorn, macaroni and cheese, pizza, risotto and mashed potatoes to name a few. Another interesting flavour is their roasted sesame seed and toasted walnut oil. These are perfect for soups and casseroles. The Balsamic Vinegars at Taste the Olive all come from Modena Italy. They offer an extensive array of aged, white, and flavor-infused balsamics, but the crown jewel and customer favorite is the aged 18 year traditional balsamic - a rich, complex, and smooth taste sure to hit the spot. Some other flavors include Very Vanilla Bean, Razzy Raspberry, or Wild About Blueberries and the white balsamic vinegars (made with Trebbiano grapes). The signature vinegars like Go Coconuts, Buzzing Honey Ginger, or Blushing Peach will be a winner at your next dinner party for sure.

HOMESTYLE

Paradise on Bay St.

A slice of heaven with endless water views STORY & PHOTOS BY: AMI BROWN

T

They extended the back half of the house, which was an old screenedin porch, and made an open living room kitchen area. There is a custom cut through that goes clear from the back of the house, through to the front

room window. This way if Julie is in the kitchen, she can see the boats passing in the river across the street. She says she can feel the vibrations of the large boats when they turn just in front of her house – she loves to take out her binoculars and have a look. She’s just like a kid with her enthusiasm of the river, the boats and the water front life. She even admits she’s burned many meals, distracted by water activities taking precedence over dinner time duties. If you want to track those big ships too, www.marinetraffic.com has all the schedules and even the lengths of the containers that are making an appearance here in Southport.

ommy and Julie Harrelson’s historic farmhouse-style home was built by local attorney Rob Davis back in 1915. Although a boat ended up in the front yard, the home survived hurricane Hazel, and stands proud flying the American and North Carolina Flags keeping watch over the Cape Fear River in the heart of the Southport waterfront.

The Harrelson’s bought this house in 2007, and it was in a bad state of disarray. Tommy grew up in southport just a few blocks from this house, and fell in love with the location. They knew they had to remodel it. It was right when the recession hit, and most builders were out of work. This was their “forever” house, the one they would retire in. They knew they wanted to make it their own, and

make everything perfect. Tommy was no stranger to remodels, he had done several before this one; but this was going to be special. They took out a small staircase and put in an elevator. They were planning for the future when it might be harder for them to go up and down the stairs. It even comes in handy now, especially if they have anything heavy or large to carry upstairs. www.SouthportMag.com / DECEMBER 2016 / Southport Magazine 35

HOMESTYLE HOMESTYLE The original upstairs had four bedrooms, no closets and one small bathroom. The Harrelsons knew this was not an ideal layout that would work for them. They decided to transform the second level into 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a large walk-in closet and a small office space for Tommy. “There is never a dull moment living

HOME here, I love to talk to the people passing by.” Julie told me. Being so close to the yacht basin, tourists and locals alike walk along the river front, with the harrelson house on the way, it’s easy to stop and say, “Hi neighbor!” When you approach the front door,

you are greeted with an oversized wrap around porch with an array of black rockers and chairs – enough for extended family and friends to enjoy. Facing the water, it’s the perfect place to hang out, watch the ships roll in and have a glass of wine. As you enter into the wide foyer, a bright open stair case leads you to the

36 Southport Magazine / DECEMBER 2016 / www.SouthportMag.com

second floor. Glimpses of beautiful antiques, dark woods, quirky art and eclectic décor catch your eye. You can’t help but notice the original hard wood floors, their golden color enhances the warm atmosphere. You feel welcomed beyond words here. Patterned Egyptian rugs are strategically scattered throughout the

home. They’re just enough to provide interest, color and more warmth. But don’t worry they don’t hide the floors, they enhance it. A generous collection of Tommy’s favorite local artist – Art Newton original paintings adorn the walls of the front two rooms. Tommy even wrote a book about Art’s amazing life and his contribution and influence on the Southport art community. True to Southport fashion, when word got out that the book was being written, people from all over the area brought in their paintings to be included in the book. Ricky Evans even volunteered to take apart the frames and to scan the art work for the book. Southport really is a community of kind and generous people – no wonder it won the friendliest sea side town! This house is full of life and energy and is the perfect entertainer’s dream. Julie admits it was hard to keep

HOMESTYLE HOMESTYLE quiet for that year and a half while Tommy penned his book. One of her favorite features is the ambient light from outside in the evening and the sunlight in the daytime. Light floods in from every window, every custom plantation shutter and highlights the eclectic decor in each well thought out room. The formal

front living room seems especially bright, maybe it’s the river view that acts as art in motion along the front wall. The couch is centered between two interesting marble antique end tables. But the real story is the pair of matching bronze lady lamps atop them. Julie saw these lamps in the old curiosity shop on Howe Street. (Where Port City Java is now located) they sat there for more than 15 years - probably because one of the lady’s hands was broken. They finally ended up in the Harrelson home,

“ The house is a living being, it’s just wonderful. It oozes tranquility and it’s so peaceful. “

20 years ago. Tommy found someone that could make a mould and fix the hand. I looked and I couldn’t even tell it had been repaired. These two ladies remind me of Paris for some reason, elegant and statuesque. The black and white striped lamp shades add a bit of quirkiness and flare. The short open hallway straight ahead takes you back into the addition, the open kitchen living area. You pass a couple of interesting furniture pieces and a bar area, along with a formal dining room.Tommy refinished an antique wardrobe that was found in

the old quarantine station. It now acts as a hall closet, and looks amazing. One of Julie’s favorite art pieces is a hand painted stain glass window she got from Mary Paulsen of Holden Beach. The glass fills in the top portion of one of the living room windows. It’s just enough color that it diffuses the sun so it doesn’t fall in Julie’s eyes when she’s in her favorite reading spot. If you want a real unique art experience, visit Mary’s studio and home. She paints on glass, wood, practically anything. If you are looking for a one-of-a-kind, she’s the artist that can deliver. The kitchen is bright, open and full of top of the line finishes. It also includes Julie’s collection of quirky pottery with faces, cute kitchen gadgets and fun metal sculptures. The dual oven is a six burner gas top, but is compact and only takes up the room of a four burner. The perfect choice, understated but highly functional. The simplistic black and white theme carries nicely throughout the house, even in the kitchen, without being overdone. Another quirky item is an old fashioned water heater that was found at a local antique shop. It finds the perfect place on top of the kitchen cabinets. By simply removing some of the original french doors, it really opened up the house. They did not compromise the historic features or the appearance. The original fireplace was crumbling, it wasn’t safe, so that had to be removed. The original door knobs were dark purple glass, and you still find them on the interior doors, functioning perfectly. The doors that were removed – and those antique knobs got a new home. They were attached to a wall tree, and now are the perfect answer to a stylish coat and hat rack. Above almost every interior doorway sits a shelf, masked as substantial

carpentry trim work. An impressive collection of elephants are displayed in almost every room above the doors. All different sizes, colors, wooden, brass, ceramic… you name it. They look as if they are from all over the globe as well. Back in the late 80’s and early 90’s, Tommy was the North Carolina State Secretary of Transportation. His government position spawned the collection, and it keeps growing today. Tommy was also the Safety Secretary and had a large influence on the road safety in the area. A nice

portion of highway 17 is named after him. The large walk in closet was added upstairs and is actually shared by both, Julie and Tommy. Being minimalistic, whenever Tommy buys a new piece of clothing, he always gets rid of one. He admits he needs to get rid of a few more things, but it seems to be working out fine. Nothing seems crowded or cluttered. Everything has it’s own space. The custom book shelf in the living room is a real standout. It homes

HOMESTYLE HOMESTYLE books and art, custom built by wood craftsman, Dean Dosher, with quality and superb attention to detail throughout. Tim Farrell also worked on the remodel, making suggestions always keeping with the period, style and original design. The antique coffee table is a little hidden gem. It’s actually Tommy’s father’s old cedar chest. It’s been lovingly restored and holds an array of Santas that come out every year to replace the elephants for about a month or so over the holidays. Another one of Julie’s prized antiques is the guest bed. It’s an antique super sized single mattress. Sitting high on the frame with a white hand crocheted coverlet that makes the perfect period piece bed spread. It’s like stepping back in time.

“ It’s hard to go anywhere on vacation, we already live in paradise here. “

Julie wanted to give Tommy something special; it comes in the form of a real treat. It’s a bathroom to die for. The masculine design, dark grey tile, glass block and enormous walk in shower is the icing on the cake. Another adorable feature is the garden shed. Covered in ivy and situated out back, it’s keeping with the style of the house and offers ample storage for tools and gardening equipment. The next time you walk down Bay Street and you see the lovely couple on the porch, make sure to wave, smile or say hi. You might just find yourself chatting with a couple of new friends. The Harrelsons are some of the nicest people in Southport – the definition of pure Southern hospitality and charm.

HEALTH Healthy Hints For Holiday Travel

Easy Steps That Can Make All The Difference! STORY BY: LESLIE RESCHLY, BSN, RN

H

oliday Stress is enough to handle without the complications of trains, planes and automobiles! If you find yourself taking this necessary travel step to celebrate with loved ones far or abroad, you may consider the following health-related helpful hints.

Source: Sean MacEntee

Implement the 3 R’s - Routine, Rhythm and Ritual. Stick to your morning, afternoon or evening routine as much as possible. This relates to workout periods, eating and sleep. A lack of sleep can make you irritable and cause you to make poor choices regarding diet and exercise. Healthy Diet. Pack healthy snacks for car rides or air flights. These may include energy granola-type bars, fruit, veggies or even hummus. Consider those, which can go periods without refrigeration. Options available prevent you from choosing those less than nutritious circus peanuts at the GAS STOP (Gummy anything is my splurge of choice!). Preparation also helps to avoid the high fat, high carb food at airports and on the plane. I am a big proponent of finding a local grocery market as soon as possible upon arrival to my destination. Fruit, cheese or other healthy snacks prevent eating out at every meal. If you are forced to stay in a hotel, ask for the mini-bar to be removed and replaced with a refrigerator

to store yogurt, fruit and other healthy options. Many local markets provide a sampling of several fruit bowls, cheese or hummus with veggies to go. If you are forced to eat out, consider portion sizes typical of what you would eat at home. But by all means, try the local cuisine! Hydrate with water. Dry mucous membranes are more prone to germs! In addition, adequate hydration helps to curb hunger. Take a reusable water bottle to fill and drink throughout your trip. You will be avoiding plastic waste and always have water with you. Avoid sugar substitute drinks that often stimulate hunger and remember to drink water prior to a meal help decrease caloric intake. Beware of excess alcohol or caffeine which can both be dehydrating and contribute to jet lag symptoms. Explore and Exercise. Consider exploration by foot around your area - be it grandma’s house or a new city. Stick to your exercise routine by contacting local gym facilities for drop in rates or selecting

a hotel with exercise equipment. Use a layover to walk the airport if there is time. It seems I am always in Zone 27 to board so I know I can at least walk for 5-10 minutes! Attempt to walk around the airplane while in flight if allowed. At minimum, move your ankles in circles and up/down to assist in prevention of blood clots. Compression stockings may be beneficial for long flights. If traveling by car, use every opportunity to get out, stretch and walk around before returning to the road. Be a “GERM A PHOBE”. Carry your own hand sanitizer and antibacterial wipes. You’re your hands before eating or touching any of your mucous membranes such as nose, eyes or mouth. Wipe down surfaces you may be in contact with...especially those notorious airplane trays!! Hit the OTC (over the counter) area of your pharmacy prior to travel. Many people exalt the positive effects of extra vitamin C products. Saline nasal spray is a favorite of many travelers because it helps to moisten those drying mucous membranes perhaps preventing invasion by cold or flu viruses and other germs. Increase your water and fiber to prevent constipation but again consider your normal routine and allow time for your body. Consider the need for sunscreen or insect repellant if your travels take you somewhere exotic. Be safe and comfortable. Acupressure wristbands are available for those who suffer from nausea or motion sickness. Consider RFID blocking wallets to prevent identity theft from scanning of credit card or other documents. Bring along travel aids as necessary. As airplane seats no longer recline to any degree, perhaps consider a travel pillow--inflatable ones are perfect as they take minimal space upon arrival to your destination. In addition, pack lightly in a bag that you are allowed to check on. This prevents unnecessary costs and keeps your luggage with you in event of a change in flight schedule. There is something incredibly liberating about traveling with as little “ stuff “ as possible. Layer flight clothes and minimize jewelry and accessories. If this is not an option for you, at minimum take a carry on with your medications and basic change of clothing for 2-3 days. Often during winter travel, flights are changed and baggage is lost. Several shawl-like wraps are available for women that provide warmth as well as fashion and a blanket for travel. Consider pressure venting earplugs that block noise but allow air to pass thus are more comfortable. Should you be so lucky as to be changing multiple time zones for your travel,

remember to prepare for jet lag. Jet lag is the disruption of your normal sleep and waking cycle due to changes in time zones. It often takes your body and it’s internal clock a few days to catch up with travel. At least 4-7 days prior to your departure begin to make adjustments to your sleep and wake cycle. Attempt to be as rested as possible at the start of your trip. Implement your normal routines and rituals as soon as possible on arrival. Avoid over-eating, caffeine and excess alcohol. I have heard it said, “ one if by air, three if by land” meaning one alcohol drink on an airplane at altitude has the same equivalent as 3 on the land. Use sleeping pills with caution to avoid extreme grogginess. Hydrate as dehydration worsens symptoms of jet lag. Stay in the daylight on arrival to assist with resetting your internal clock. Avoid napping for greater than 20 minutes or turning in early for bed as you may find yourself awake at 2 AM with nothing to do! Finally, Be Present in the Moment! You have traveled great distances to be with loved ones. Have fun and enjoy this Holiday Season! May you have Safe, Healthy and Happy Travels! See you in 2017!

Source: watchfit.com/diet/healthy-mulledwine-recipe/

My Mom would make this every year on Christmas Eve. She would ladle it into big coffee cups and we would drop marshmallows in and watch them melt. I remember feeling so special and grown up. Not to mention, it was so delicious. Once you have tried this Hot Chocolate, you will never be able to drink instant hot chocolate again! – Kris (owner)

HOT CHOCOLATE

• 1.5 cups of heavy cream • 1 can of sweetened condensed milk (14oz) • 2 cups milk chocolate chips • 6 cups of milk • 1 tsp vanilla extract Put all the ingredients in a crockpot, turn it on low and enjoy.

My family likes to get together every year in the OBX for Thanksgiving. There are 15 of us and we stay in one house, a large house but still, one house. So needless to say on my Christmas holiday I keep it low key and relaxing. Curling up on the sofa with a stack of magazines that I’ve been saving or a great movie to watch are more my speed. What makes this time so wonderful is a warm mug of mulled wine. When I pair it with some holiday candles glowing and the lights twinkling on the Christmas tree, it is magical. – Jen (Editor)

CROCKPOT MULLED RED WINE

• 2 Bottles of Dry Red Wine • 1-Cup Sugar • 3 Cinnamon Sticks • 4 Whole Cloves • 2 Star Anise • Sliced Oranges • Cheesecloth In a crockpot, pour two bottles of Pinot Noir. Place the wine on low, and mix in the sugar and stir occasionally until dissolved. In cheesecloth, add whole cloves, star anise. Add sliced oranges and whole cinnamon sticks. Let it cook for about 2-4 hours until warm. Then remove the spices and orange slices. Set out additional orange slices and cinnamon sticks so your guests can garnish their drinks!

W

e’ve all heard the song “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” and chances are that is the only time and place that figgy pudding enters our consciousness. But what the heck is figgy pudding? Does it really exist? Is it tasty? So tasty, that I would I bang my hands on the table and demand, “Now bring me some figgy pudding!” I was curious.

I wasn’t surprised to learn that figgy pudding comes from England and dates back to the 16th Century. It was made with figs and thickened with bread. It wasn’t until the 19th Century in the West County of England, that the famed Christmas Carol was penned. The origin of the Christmas Carol lies in the English tradition where wealthy people of the community gave Christmas treats to the carolers on Christmas Eve, such as figgy pudding. Figgy pudding is more like cake than pudding and is made of dried fruit, a special cake batter, seasonings such as nutmeg and cinnamon and booze! In fact, figgy pudding was actually banned by the English puritans, due to its alcohol content. The recipe itself included cognac and rum. You can even drizzle more alcohol over your figgy pudding and light it on fire! Flambé figgy pudding … now I understand the lyrics, “Now bring me some figgy pudding!” Over the years, figgy pudding has evolved. There are recipes ranging from simple to complex. In general, it is like bread pudding. Make it with figs, and you can call it figgy pudding. Make it with plums and you can call it plum pudding. Add booze or not. It is totally up to you and your taste buds! Here are a few recipes to try out this holiday season. But one thing is for sure, If you want to get the party started this holiday season… bring some figgy pudding, and bring it right now!

• 1 (2.45 oz.) package of sliced almonds • 2 TBSP orange marmalade • 1 TBSP grated orange zest • 1/2 tea orange-vanilla flavoring Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a tube pan. Sift flour, sugar, baking powder, nutmeg, cinnamon and salt together in a bowl. Beat eggs in a large bowl with an electric hand mixer on high for 1 minute. Add fig-and-buttermilk mixture, breadcrumbs, butter, almonds, orange marmalade, orange zest, and orange-vanilla flavoring to the beaten eggs; beat on low speed until blended. Gradually add flour mixture while beating until just incorporated into a batter. Spoon batter into prepared pan. Grease a sheet of aluminum foil; use to cover pan. Bake in preheated oven until firm and pulling away from sides of pan - about 2 hours. Set aside to cool for 10 minutes before removing from pan.

• 1/2-cup hot milk • 3/4-teaspoon salt Beat eggs then add sugar, breadcrumbs, suet, figs (dredged with flour), chocolate mixed with hot milk, and salt. Stir thoroughly. Steam three hours in a greased mold. Serve hot.

FLAMING FIGGY PUDDING

About 15 dried figs cut into small triangular pieces (about 1 1/2 to 2 cups) • 1/2-cup water • 1/2-cup dark rum • 1/3-cup brandy • 1/2-cup raisins • 1 1/3 - cups whole-wheat pastry flour • 2 - teaspoons baking powder • 1 1/2 - teaspoons cinnamon • 1-teaspoon ground ginger • 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg • 1/4-teaspoon ground cloves • 1/4-teaspoon sea salt • 3 large eggs • 1 cup brown sugar, packed • 2 cups fresh white breadcrumbs, made from an 8 piece of baguette • 4 - ounces unsalted butter, melted and cooled • 1 - cup chopped dried apricots • 1 - cup dried cranberries • 1/3-cup brandy, to flame the pudding Grease your Bundt pan with a layer of cooking spray, and a layer of butter. (Seems like a lot, but you want it to be nice and greasy, as to facilitate removing the pudding later.) Place figs and water in a saucepan, and bring water to boil. Simmer until the water has almost completely evaporated. Add the brandy, rum and raisins, and bring to another boil. Remove the pan from the heat and place in an open space. Keeping the pan lid nearby set the alcohol on fire and let burn slowly for two minutes.

Extinguish the flames by putting the lid on the pan. After a few seconds, remove the lid, and set the newly uncovered pan aside. Whisk together your dry ingredients in a medium mixing bowl, and set aside. Then, in a large mixing bowl, beat the eggs and brown sugar until well blended. Stir in the breadcrumbs, butter and boozy dried-fruit mixture. Gently stir in the dry ingredients into your wet ingredients, and then fold in your apricots and cranberries. Pour the batter into your Bundt pan, and seal tightly with aluminum foil. Place in the stockpot and fill with hot water until it’s about 1/2 to 2/3 up the sides of the cake pan. Bring water to a boil and then lower the heat to simmer. Cover the stockpot with aluminum foil, and then seal tightly with a lid. Simmer for two hours, adding more water as needed, until the pudding is done. To test for doneness, carefully remove the lid and various layers of aluminum foil. Insert knife in the center of the cake, toward the tube. If the knife comes out clean, it’s done. Remove the pan to a cooling rack, and let sit for 5 minutes. To invert: Loosen the sides with a knife and place the cooling rack on top of the Bundt pan. Gently, and with the help of someone else, if you can, grab both sides of the cooling rack and flip the Bundt pan upside-down. Then lift the pan up slowly, wiggling it slightly to loosen the pudding from the mold. (Do NOT just pick up the pan and tip it over, as it could lose its shape.) Let the pudding cool for 30 minutes. To flame the pudding, heat 1/3 cup of brandy over medium heat. Pour over the warm cake, and working quickly, light a match and set it aflame. Serve in large slices.

Not Your Ordinary Christmas Flick

Bad Moms is a fun stress reliever (after the kids go to bed!) STORY BY: EMILY KLINEFELTER

T

he Holiday Season is here. WHAT? Typically, the Movie Mavens would get together and write a Scene review on a Christmas movie because it only makes sense, right? Yeah, but, we decided to take a different approach to the holiday issue. We looked for a movie that would make you laugh when all things are not going as perfect as you planned. There are a lot of stressors that come with the season and we felt we needed a movie to counteract the stress. This is a good movie to put on while you enjoy a mug of, what some may believe to be hot cocoa but is really, straight tequila and help you laugh through the tears of stress. We decided to warm up some special cider and put on Bad Moms! Amy (Mila Kunis) is a great mom of two wonderful kids, a loving wife to a mortgage broker, successful business woman who lives in a beautiful home in the suburbs of Chicago. She’s gorgeous, drives a new 2016 Chrysler Pacifica, her life is perfect or so it may appear to be. Amy finds herself on the verge of a mental break down. She learns her husband is a jerk, her kids are over stressed and spoiled, her boss doesn’t seem to understand all that she does, and to top it off the PTA President Gwendolyn (Christina Applegate) is bound and determined to make a mothers job a 1,000 times harder than it already is. Being a Mom is already a tough job, being a Mom this day in age without some kind of criticism or judgement is downright impossible, but Moms try, we try so hard to be perfect. (Side note: I have 2 boys a 3 and 5 year old, and I don’t try to appear perfect, it’s too hard. I am a bad mom with an amazing husband and proud, ha! My co-writer however is a mom of 2 kids a son and a daughter and she is a perfect mom, but I try to ignore that aspect of her because well, it’s gross. We can’t all be perfect Jen!) Amy has had enough of the show of being a perfect Mom. She’s exhausted! Gwendolyn and the school bake sale are the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

Amy lets loose and finds companionship in two other moms, Carla (Kathryn Hahn) a single mom on the prowl and Kiki (Kristen Bell) a stay at home mom controlled by her kids and husband. The three friends join together and support each other through the stress that comes with being a mom and also a unified goal to take down the Queen Bee Gwendolyn who is vindictive and on a power trip. We laughed so hard during this movie. It was jam packed with well-known actors/ actresses like: Wanda Sykes, Jada Picket Smith and Clark Duke. It was a little vulgar however, so pre-warning on that. This movie was produced by the same men that did The Hangover. So, have that in mind when you watch it. Fun facts about the movie

SCENE

The movie mavens—a couple of bad ass moms.

Mila Kunis was pregnant with her second child during and she looks disgustingly gorgeous and you could never tell and the six main actresses are all real-life mothers. We think this movie plays as a good res minder that we are not perfect, and trying to appear to be perfect can be hindering to our children and to our mental health. With this holiday season coming up we would like to take a moment to remind you. You are perfect within your imperfections. Don’t stress out about Holiday pictures or dinners or if your kids are appearing to have perfect listening skills. Remember to make memories and have fun, let loose and drive the vintage Dodge Challenger. Expectations are the devil, just let it be and smile. You are a wonderful, beautiful, bad mom.
