round the holiday season, many of us try to remember our local charities and lend a helping hand. We take names off angel trees at our churches, places of business or government agencies. We buy clothing and other necessities, food and toys. We support Toys for Tots and other groups that try to share the spirit of the season. But now that the holidays are over, we can turn our attention to another population that needs our help! There are many unwanted dogs and cats in our area, but a few local shelters provide the love and care these animals need until they can find a home of their own. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) estimates that there are 70 million stray cats in the United States, 13,600 animal shelters nationwide and that 7.6 million companion animals enter shelters every year. Here in southeastern Brunswick County, there are four animal shelters doing what they can to help decrease those numbers and place animals in their forever homes, and to care for and rehabilitate shorebirds. There are many ways we can help these groups with their efforts.

SOAR

3376 St. Charles Place (off Airport Road, near Oak Island) The Southport-Oak Island Animal Rescue has been helping dogs and cats find homes since 1992. Cathy Fitzgerald bought the property last year from the shelter’s founder; she had volunteered for several years prior to purchasing the land. SOAR sits on three acres off Airport Road, and has room for up to 14 dogs and many, many cats. Fitzgerald works closely with Brunswick County in placing dogs. She also said that even though she is “pretty picky” when she places a dog with a family. Sometimes she gets dogs because they’re being returned after being adopted, such as when a family is splitting up or moving or there’s a new baby in the house. When a family is considering adopting a dog or cat, Fitzgerald said she tries to make sure they’ll be compatible. She also tried to make people understand she can only tell them what she knows of a dog, what she has seen as far as if a dog gets along well with other dogs, or cats. She can’t, for example, tell if a dog is going to be housebroken. “They have to do their own work with the dog,” she explained. Like other animal shelters, SOAR makes

sure dogs are being placed in homes with fenced-in yards. Vet records are also checked, to make sure a prospective family has a good record of taking care of their animals, but how a family and the dog act together also plays a role. “I pretty much go by my gut feeling,” Fitzgerald said. “When people come I can see if there’s a connection. I’m pretty good at finding them a home.” Some of the buildings at SOAR are in need of repair, and some of the kennels need new roofing as well. “We have some repairs to do,” Fitzgerald said. “People could give us gift cards for Lowes or Home Depot.” Otherwise, SOAR’s wish list is similar to other shelters’ needs. Cat litter is always especially needed, as are leashes, and heartworm preventative medicine. SOAR benefits from donations from the Leland Walmart, which gives the shelter damaged bags of food, etc. Though Fitzgerald puts in a lot of hours working with the animals and taking them to appointments at the veterinarian, she knows the work she does is important. “I need to rescue someone. I just feel sorry for these poor pets. This is my way of nurturing someone,” she said.

has been helping shoreline birds since 2007. The shelter does not keep non-releasable animals or use heroic methods to sustain the quality of their life. However, volunteers do make every effort to rehabilitate an endangered species, and every animal brought there is treated with respect and caring, according to the website (www.seabiscuitwildlifeshelter.org/). Every year, approximately 50 brown pelicans pass through the shelter, including fledges who don’t quite know how to catch their

own fish and often get tangled in fishing nets or hooks and lines, and young Pelicans who ignore the instinct to migrate. More than 3,000 have been helped at the shelter, and just four of them call the facility home. Tim the Pelican serves as a good ambassador for the shelter and also helps show the newcomers how to behave at the shelter. Shadow the Barred Owl, Scarlet the Red-tailed hawk, and Lusby the fish crow help Rogers maintain her federal permits by participating in educational programs throughout the year. With that permit, Rogers can take in anything from hummingbirds to eagles. Birds can stay at the facility just 180 days. The goal is to rehabilitate birds and release them back into their natural habitats. Sometimes that is not possible, though, and Rogers tries to place them with zoos or other centers. The shelter relies heavily on donations, and can use items such as local unprocessed honey, tall kitchen bags, peroxide/ alcohol, freeze dried or canned crickets, floor mops or a hand vacuum, hair cutting shears with 2 or 3 inch blades (3 of each), butcher’s shears, gallon-sized freezer bags, sandwich sized plastic boxes (or smaller) and paper towels. The Sea Biscuit Wildlife Shelter is a non-profit organization that relies on donations from the Town of Oak Island, individuals and private businesses. To support the rehabilitation of wild birds, field studies and educational programs, or to find out more information, call (910) 278-7871 or send an email to seabiscuitshelter@yahoo.com. The shelter also has a Facebook page.

PAWS PLACE

3701 East Boiling Spring Road At Paws Place, the goals are simple. Rescue as many dogs as possible, and place them in their forever homes. And they’d like to do it all out of a nice new shelter on N.C. 87. “There’s nothing like seeing a dog being rescued that maybe has been with us for a while and seeing the difference that dog has made for the family that has adopted them,” said Peggy Durso, Paws Place Director of Operations. “We treat all of the dogs as if they were our own.” Paws Place is a non-profit, no kill shelter just outside Boiling Spring Lakes. Monetary donations would be the easiest way to help Paws Place at the current time, Durso said. “It has been a very big challenge for us over the last three years to keep operating and to raise money for the building,” she said. They’re essentially relying on two different fundraising tracts, and when people donate toward building the shelter, sometimes it means less money for day-to-day operations. They began raising funds for

the new building in 2014. But as Durso explained, if people donate things on their wish lists, like food, collars, linens, etc., then they can use monetary donations for medical bills and the capital campaign. Paws Place’s wish list includes many common household items, and would be much appreciated by the volunteers and the dogs they help. The list includes: dog food -- Iams Proactive Senior, Purina Active Life, Purina One Smart Blend, Purina One Smart Puppy, Rachel Ray Just 6, high efficiency laundry detergent (powdered works best in winter because the liquid

freezes in cold weather), bleach (not concentrated), Dawn dish detergent (original blue), Paper towels, 13 gallon tall kitchen trash bags, 33 gallon trash bags, weight circles from any Purina brand dry dog food -- these help generate funds toward vet expenses and can be mailed to the shelter, 6’ leashes, collars -- all sizes but no buckles, gently-used towels and sheets but no comforters or quilts, and gift cards for grocery or home improvement stores. There is also another way people can contribute. Paws Place is running a Buy a Brick campaign. Bricks cost either $100 or $200, depending on the size, and can be engraved to honor a loved one. For more information on building pathways at the new facility, please visit www.pawsplace. org/ or call (910) 845-7297. Completing the new building has been delayed by the weather not cooperating, but Durso is confident they will be in it by next winter. Most importantly, it’s about getting the animals out of the elements. With a building, though, volunteers will be able to do laundry and work with animals in a facility with heat, instead of the barn they currently use.

Sometimes, Paws Place uses the assistance of foster families, such as when an animal is recovering from surgery or when the temperatures drop too low. A young litter of 11 puppies was sent to live with foster families December. Durso said Paws Place was much busier last year. On average, they have approximately 40 dogs at a time at Paws Place. As of mid-December, they had brought in 168 dogs and placed 161 – 60 percent more than last year. They also treated 25 dogs for heartworms, and it costs $500 per dog for treatment. All the dogs get all their shots and are spayed or neutered before they’re adopted. Durso said she hopes people know they can really make a difference. “There is always some way you can help, whether it’s liking our post on Facebook or volunteering,” she said. “We would love to make people Paws Place Partners, even if they commit to $10 a month. It would be helpful if people could just commit like they do for bill paying. If all of our Facebook likes would translate to $5 a month…and then we could know exactly how much we were getting.”

SHOWCASE Move Over Chicago! Beginnings brings the big band STORY BY: JEFFREY STITES

I

t takes a bit of chutzpah to put out a double-album as your debut release, but when it sells over a million copies inside of a year it’s safe to say you’ve been vindicated, and are worthy of imitation!Beginnings, the nation’s premier Chicago tribute band, is coming to Brunswick County’s Odell Williamson Auditorium on the campus of Brunswick Community College on Thursday, January 25, to do just that and share some horn-infused rock and roll.

Founded in 2002, decades after the original Chicago’s birth as Chicago Transit Authority in 1969, the eight-piece Beginnings ensemble includes several multi-instrumentalists and a collection of vocalists able to pay homage to the original’s changing styles. Those are some big shoes to fill. Chicago is second only to the Beach Boys as the American band with the most single and album Billboard successes. With four hit singles on their debut album, the band took off from there producing five number one albums and 21 top ten singles. Fun fact: if you were to go to Google looking for a schedule for the El and type in “Chicago Transit Authority,” this band pops up before the actual public transit system. That’s some popularity! Over it’s multi-decade life-span (and Chicago is still touring and recording to-

through Thursday and 9 am through 2:30 pm on Fridays. The box office also opens one hour and fifteen minutes prior to curtain on the day of the show. Tickets are also available online at www.bccowa.com

or by phone at 910-755-7416. If you love the classic rock tribute bands, keep an eye out in April when Face To Face comes to Odell, featuring both Elton John and Billy Joel tribute bands! 1

day), the band has included almost 20 musicians for various periods, with even more joining to fill out the sound on tours. During their long career, Chicago Transit Authority became just Chicago as it evolved from a horn-based rock sound to more soft, adult contemporary music. The challenge for a tribute band is to faithfully recreate the original band’s full repertoire with just one line-up of musicians. Beginnings handles the challenge with a line-up of professional musicians, all veterans of the New York City music scene brought together by a passion for the source material. They strive to bring a family-friendly atmosphere in which they lovingly recreate each decade of the band’s hits. Beginnings takes to the Odell Williamson stage at 7:30 pm and tickets are available in person at the Odell Williamson Box Office from 9 am to 4:30 pm Monday www.SouthportMag.com / JANUARY 2017 / Southport Magazine 17

SHOWCASE

Listen Up

Kicking off another great year for Brunswick County BY: JEFFREY STITES

T

he folks at Listen Up Brunswick County have established a fine tradition of bringing quality, interesting talent from the musical Americana tradition to our doorsteps. The first show in Listen Up’s 2017 line-up carries on that tradition in a big way.

Joe Crookston will be stopping at Brunswick County Community College’s Odell Williamson Auditorium on Saturday, January 21. The show will be at 7:00 pm and take place in the Virginia Williamson Event’s Center, a more intimate venue inside the larger auditorium building. Crookston is more than a folk musician, though his musical talents include singing, songwriting and playing guitar, slide guitar, banjo and fiddle. He is also a painter, with artwork displayed alongside that of musical greats like Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix at the True North Gallery of Fine Arts in Ontario, Canada. Folk art is at its best is when it’s closest to real, average, everyday people. The struggles of the everyman, both modern and historical, have informed folk art, and especially folk music, for centuries. The legendary Woodie Guthrie based much of his work on his travels from the dust bowl to California looking for work during the Great Depression. He turned not only his own experience, but the experiences of hundreds of fellow Okies, into abiding songs that still speak to us today. Joe Crookston took a page from Guthrie’s playbook and used a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation to create a project

called “Songs of the Finger Lakes.” He traveled up-state New York collecting stories he would later turn into songs on his second studio album, Able Baker Charlie and Dog. One of these songs, “Brooklyn In July”, about an African American World War Two veteran returning home to face racism and personal troubles in the big city, has inspired a film of the same name that is now in post-production under the direction of Bob Celli. But Crookston is mostly about the music, and that’s what he will be bringing to Brunswick County. With a voice slightly reminiscent of James Taylor and some incredibly nimble slide guitar, fans of folks and Americana are sure to be pleased. “I do feel as though I’ve honed a way of writing and performing that has identifiable themes and expresses my quirky uniqueness,” says Crookston. “I’m learning to trust my voice as a songwriter. Be who I am. Trust the stories and follow no trends. More and more I find that when I tell my true story, it has wider breadth, deeper impact, and resonates more clearly.” Crookston’s repertoire includes everything from a cover of Supertramp’s “The Logical Song” to “Red Rooster in the Mash Pile,” from the Finger Lakes project, based

BIZ Q & A

Peaceful, Pampered Pooches

Four-Legged Clients are well cared for at this “Cabin in the Woods”

STORY BY: LESLIE FOSTER

I

n a peaceful home-based setting in Boiling Spring Lakes, Donna Nash the owner of Donna’s Tails A Waggin’ Pet Grooming, offers grooming services to all dogs under 15 pounds. Donna has been in the business of lovingly fluffing up our pets since the early 90’s. Her home based grooming business is a good fit for both her and her clients’ pets. She believes that the dogs she grooms really do feel right at home when they are dropped off for their appointments. This is quite an accomplishment because more often than not many grooming salons are filled with lots of noise and can be kennel like environments. Having been an owner/operator for most of her working life, Donna is both highly qualified to care for your dog and give professional advice on the ins and outs of choosing both grooming services and a groomer for your pet. As you read this piece you will be tickled by her funny pet stories and the insights she provides about her business. So ring in the New Year by giving Donna a call to arrange an appointment for your dog. She’s convinced that you too will become a client at her peaceful “cabin in the woods” grooming salon in BSL! Q. Tell us about your business. What services do you provide?

A. I started my pet grooming business in 1990, working for a veterinarian in Lexington, Kentucky. After a year of grooming mostly Great Pyrenees, Newfoundlands, Chow Chows and Malamutes, all giant breeds, I thought I would have to quit from ‘sheer’ exhaustion, pun intended. I thought to myself, there has to be a better way. So I custom designed a mini-grooming salon on wheels, inside a high top camping van. I was the first mobile groomer in Lexington. Since then, I have had two grooming salons, worked in a boarding kennel, and will finish out my career in the bottom half of my home. I have discovered it to be the most peaceful environment for my clients and me! I currently provide grooming services, including nail trim, ear cleaning, shampooing and trimming for dogs, 15 pounds or less. After 26 years in this profession, I had to scale back a bit and pace myself? In today’s economy, I need to hang in there another

15 years at least. Here’s a clue, I started my grooming career at age 29. Do the math!

Q. Do dog groomers require special training or a license?

A. It is ideal for groomers to have specialized training. Our furry little friends can certainly tell the difference. There are grooming schools nationwide. It is not however, required. States have not ventured into this field yet, as they have cosmetology for example, and set up guidelines or testing. The grooming profession itself has established levels of certification and is highly recommended, but not mandatory. Again, for the safety and well being of our pets, it is important for owners to question any groomer regarding their history and experience. If transparency is not a virtue, beware!

Q. Do you think dogs like the grooming process?

A. Most dogs really do enjoy the grooming process. As with anything else, you have

Donna Nash, owner of Tails A Waggin’ shows off one of her freshly groomed furry friends.

the exceptions. In my home grooming environment, the dogs are definitely more relaxed than in any other I have operated in...the couch, refrigerator and play toys probably remind them of “their home”.

Q. What shampoo do you use?

A. My products include the “finest of organic surfactants, herbal extracts, and natural oils”, a statement taken straight off the label! Some ingredients include Aloe Vera Gel, Jojoba Oil, Avocado Oil, Vitamins A, D & E, and Calendula Oil.

Q. Are you associated with a Veterinarian practice?

A. I am not directly associated with a veterinarian practice, but have a great relationship with all of them in the local area. They have been an encouraging resource when questions arise during what one of my clients’ calls “Fluffy’s mini-exam”, while pets are being groomed. I was taught to go beyond the average grooming visit, and examine skin issues, feel for abnormal growths, and be alert to any ear infections, discharges, or gum disease. By doing so I have saved many lives.

Q. In your opinion how often should the average family dog be professionally groomed?

A. Regarding frequency of grooming, my experience concludes that the average family pet is happier and healthier if they can see a professional groomer at least once every two months. The extent of the service doesn’t have to break the bank every time. I encourage my clients to just pop in with “Fluffy” for a quick brush out, nail trim or comb out so they learn to enjoy the visit, receive what may be needed that particular day, and everybody’s happy! My in between visits range from free to a minimal charge, I like to reward diligence when owners take a pro-active approach to their pets well being.

Q. How should dog owners choose a groomer?

A. Dog owners are best served when choosing a groomer by asking at least three local pet professional providers in the area whom they recommend. Veterinarians in particular are well aware of “accidents” in the grooming shops, and where they occur most frequently. Pet store owners also hear the good, bad, and the ugly when it comes to groomers. Keep in mind, NO groomer is exempt from accidents; but GOOD groomers keep them few and far between.

Q. You must have lots of funny stories! Share a couple with our readers!

A. Funny stories...hum? 1.) When I had my

BIZ Q&A grooming van, I could pull into a certain lady’s driveway and open my side doors. She would then open her front door, and a huge black and white Springer Spaniel would bound out to my van, jump in; then jump UP on to the grooming table; all before I could say, “Hi Jester, how are you today?” He was hilarious and very special! 2.) I had a client come in with a Yorkie mix dog one day. It was a senior dog, and acted old, tired, and depressed. The owner actually thought it was going to be her last grooming, and was preparing herself for the worst. She had let the dog’s coat grow out excessively, and it was matted. After I finished grooming her, it was as if new life was breathed into her little body. She pranced around like the Glamour Shot crew was on their way. The little ole’ pup lived another two years, and the haircut was declared the saving factor. She kept her trimmed exactly the same way till her last breath.

FUN QUESTIONS:

A. The most common pet names I have heard over the years are: Bella, Daisy, Charlie, and Bo. The most uncommon pet names are Farfel, Brinee, Panda, and Killian. All of which have very distinct and loving personalities.

FAVORITE THING ABOUT SOUTHPORT:

Q. What are the most common and un-common pet names you’ve heard!

Q. Seriously now, do dogs really resemble their owners?

A. In many cases, the resemblance is more in the personality than appearance...THAT is a true statement! However, you can always find a pair of look-a-likes in any group. It is fun to try. 1

FAVORITE FOOD: My favorite food today could be Pad Thai; tomorrow you would find me asking for a creamy chicken alfredo; and the next day a grilled salmon. I LOVE FOOD! FAVORITE BOOK: My favorite book is The Holy Bible. There is no other book that lives and breathes its message FAVORITE MUSIC: My favorite music would be found in the Christian arena...anything inspired by God, Messianic or otherwise. I even have a few original compositions of my own. FAVORITE PLACE TO TRAVEL: My favorite place to travel would have to be Uganda, Africa. The people are warm and giving; and much of the land is lush and beautiful.

My favorite thing about Southport would be the generosity of people and businesses when things get tough. As a local evangelist, our ministry reaches out to families in need, spiritually and physically. My experience is, when someone needs help, Southport rallies. We took approximately 65 garbage bags full of clothes to Lumberton, NC after hurricane Matthew narrowly missed us, but devastated their area. THANK YOU SOUTHPORT!! PHOTO BY: KRIS BEASLEY

HEALTH Danger Comes in Pretty Packages Poison Control for Fury Friends STORY BY: LESLIE RESCHLY, BSN, RN

A

s a nurse in the ER, I was always amazed at the substances that toddlers would choose to ingest when let out of sight or allowed to wander away from your direct supervision, the same is true of our furry friends!

+ tax limited time only

While all pets provide a special place for your heart to rest, this column will focus on primarily dog and cat health this month. Birds, donkeys, fish, snakes etc. are all loved members of the family but just not as popular in number of incidences reported, related to poisoning and safety. So many substances are present in your home or outside environment that can be potentially dangerous to your pet. It is very important to remember that your pet comes from a different scientific genus and species therefore can not enjoy the same foods, drinks, medications, organic products etc. that you enjoy due to their different composition. ASPCA.org is an excellent resource. First and foremost, please be advised that the ASPCA runs a Poison Control Hotline for pets. The telephone number is 888-426-4435. This is your first source for assistance--especially if you know what substance has been ingested--as they are available 24 hours per day and 365 days per year. While it may be prudent to reach out to your local vet, you can obtain valuable information promptly from this source. They also have a phone app as well. Fine print indicates there may be a $65 charge.

The ASPCA web site provides a list of toxic and non-toxic plants that scrolls for pages as well as information on foods and substances. Overwhelmed with info, I sought the expertise of local veterinarian, Alyssa Travis, DVM, VMA from River Road Animal Hospital for wisdom related to local poisoning occurrences treated during her 10+years in the community. Symptoms seen in animals can vary depending on the substance ingested. Typically, your pet may experience vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, abnormal urination, salivation, weakness or seizures but overall, you will know that this is not your “typical” pet behavior. The challenge comes in determining just what that animal “got into”. Dr. Travis and her staff emphasized that trying to determine the substance, though often difficult, is certainly helpful if you are willing to share the possibilities. For example, recreational drugs pose a hazard to your animal. If your dog ate your child’s friend’s brother’s marijuana, please report this, as the principles of confidentiality will remain in effect. The quicker you can determine possible substance ingested, the faster the treatment can be initiated.

HEALTH Although she has treated a wide-range of animal poisonings, Dr. Travis shared what typically presents in our area. For dogs, Sago Palms ingested can cause a bleeding gastroenteritis leading to liver failure and death. In cats, lilies of all varieties pose a risk to the point that inhaling pollen can cause kidney failure. Mushrooms, which typically sprout in yards, as well as grapes growing on vines, can present hazards. She notes the common fallacy that Poinsettias, while causing vomiting etc., do not typically kill your animal.

Every attempt should be made to keep your pet away from the following substances: • Coffee, Coffee Grounds & ChocolateThese products contain methylxanthines which can cause heart and neurological issues. Poisoning is dose related based on the size of the dog, amount and type of chocolate. Dark/bittersweet chocolate is more hazardous than milk or white chocolate. • Fatty foods, gravy, alcoholic beverages, spicy foods, bones & raw meat. Ingested cocktails can lead to coma or death from respiratory failure. • Prescription or OTC medications including those used topically. For example pain, blood pressure, heart medications, Non-Steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, diabetic medications or even topical arthritis type of medications are not for your animals. Guard them safely and dispose of them properly. Of note, a discarded used Fentanyl pain patch in the trash can be licked or ingested by your pet. • Supplements and natural/organic products not intended for use on animals. An organic substance deemed effective for humans can be hazardous to your pet. Coconut oil causes extreme diarrhea and associated symptoms and coconut water is very high in potassium. Essential oils can be toxic. Tea Tree oil causes liver failure and paralysis. • Garlic often used to control fleas can cause severe anemia. • Foods containing Xylitol. This sweetener is used in a variety of products including candy/gum, baked goods and toothpaste. Ingestion by your animal leads to a drop in blood sugar levels, vomiting, lethargy, seizures, liver failure then death. Of importance, this is often being added to Peanut Butter, a treat typically safe for pets. • Miscellaneous things to consider include Gorilla glue which expands, fabric softener sheets, and antifreeze.

While the opportunities for harm seem overwhelming, the health of your pet can be maintained by being vigilant and providing close supervision with prompt response in case of accidental ingestions. Remember that your fury friend does not have the same ability to process substances that you do! Detective work may be necessary to determine the cause of changes in your pet. Check with your vet if you have questions regarding use of any substance, medication or foods prior to use! 1

ccording to the SPCA, it’s estimated that 75 million dogs and 85 million cats are owned in the United States. Approximately 40% of all households in the United States have a dog, and 35% have a cat, these statistics do not include all those other pets like bunnies, hamsters and ferrets. There is also a growing population of exotic pets like snakes, potbelly pigs and even hedgehogs. These numbers equate to Americans spending 60 Billion dollars on their pets each year! That’s a lot of bones.

The pet industry is obviously a HUGE one! And all of us pet owners know that our pets are more than JUST fluffy animals – they are part of our family. Pet owners spend an average of $150 each month on their pets, so this article is dedicated to all those owners – who want to do just a little more for their four-legged baby. Outdoor dog houses that rival your beach cottage - I found a few amazing examples of custom dog houses that

match the main home, that provide a bone shaped swimming pool and even a two story lounger. Whether you want a little bungalow in the shape of a barrel or a cute little doggie camper, there is something for every furry friend. You could choose to hire a custom builder or designer to create your dream doggie home. You can also find retailers that sell kits like these if you want a bit of do-it yourself. Some of the unlikely suppliers

They even have designs for the do-it-yourself handyman. The best news is that the home are fully customizable and the materials used in the built are environmentallyfriendly – aluminum, plywood and plastics were recycled and used in manufacturing the awesome piece. Craig Connolly grew up a farm boy, on a dairy, chicken and honey farm in the foothills of good of North Carolina. He simply lives and breathes honey, beekeeping and is dedicated to educating a younger generation about the importance of the bee population and honey. Where have all the bees gone? There is a serious problem with CCD (Colony Collapse Disorder) that is destroying bees and preventing pollination. Also local mosquito control is another factor. Craig works closely with several universities, the NC Beekeeper Association and the American Honey Association to find solutions. He says, “There is just no simple answer…”. Craig grew up in 4H and now volunteers for the local 4H group. He tells me that beekeeping is a dying industry and not enough kids are learning about farming and agriculture. He informs me too that 99% of everything we eat is dependent on bees – which is a real worry if something happens to them. Craig will come set up a hive on your property if you are having pollination problems. He will also be happy to give a talk to your local group.

Craig spins honey with a Black and Decker drill and a paint paddle.

“ My goal is to save the honey bee, practice good husbandry while protecting the environment and educating people.

Contact Craig through his Facebook Page – The Hive Natural Honey Store. Craig also teaches a beekeeping course through Brunswick Community College. The Hive offers a huge variety of local and regional honey including: creamed honey, whipped honey, sourwood, blueberry, alfalfa, clover, buckwheat, orange blossom honey. There’s not just honey on the menu, but also: molasses, apple cider vinegar tonic, bbq sauces, royal jelly, bee salve, elderberry syrup, muscle balm and mountain stone ground NC grits – straight from his family’s own mill, which he can’t keep on the shelf. Seasonally Craig carries other types of gifts too. Right now you might find ornaments and some beautiful candles. He is very particular about what he sells. He made it, or he knows who did – if not, he’s not interested. Craig is the real deal when it comes to buying local and supporting the community. In the Spring and Summer he has a full garden, veggies and tomatoes by the bushel. His bees do all the hard work, and he provides delicious fresh food for locals to enjoy. He believes in “treatment free” beekeeping – he say’s ..”let bees be bees!” This is a much more natural and healthy way for the bees to live. Craig is looking to expand in the near future and include commercial clients and sell wholesale. He says he couldn’t
