CURRENTS NC Aquarium Visits Oak Island Learning and Exploring for All Ages STORY BY: DEAN BLAINE
O
n a recent Tuesday, Andy Gould, the Outreach Coordinator for the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher, introduced an assortment of turtles from the aquarium to a group at the Oak Island Recreation Center. Andy discussed land, freshwater, and sea turtles to a fascinated audience. He also discussed turtle behavior, feeding habits, anatomy, and ways to protect the turtles in our environment.
The program, entitled The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher comes to Oak Island, was part of a series of events sponsored by the Oak Island Beach Preservation Society and the Oak Island Department of Recreation. Forthcoming programs include Our One Ocean, at the Oak Island Recreation Center on July 12 at 2:00pm, and Jammin’ Jellies, also at the Center on August 9 at 2:00pm. Our One Ocean will discuss several different ways that the ocean affects our environment. The program explores how ocean currents, cultures and creatures connect every continent together. People all over the world are connected to the same ocean, Gould said, and we should take responsi-
bility for our piece of the ocean. Gould will also introduce animals from the aquarium. Jammin’ Jellies will explore one of the most numerous animals in the ocean. Gould will discuss which jellyfish are native to North Carolina and the important role that they play in our ocean. Expect interactive activities and props, and live jellyfish. These programs are open to the public and great for all ages, said Rebecca Squires, Director of Oak Island Parks and Recreation, they’re for kids, families and adults too. Participants find these events very informative. “Everything they talk about surrounds us,” Squires added, “it’s our ecosystem, it’s our future.” The programs are also very hands-on. Everyone gets a chance to see the animals up close. “We hope that people will learn al little bit about aquatic wildlife that we have in our region,” Gould said. “It may be important for people who live around here to know who their neighbors are. If they are visiting, it may be animals that they’re not as familiar with, animals they may see during their stay.” These programs get packed, Gould added, come early if you want a good seat.
Gould will also present Aquarium Olympics at Harper Library in Southport on July 11 at 11:00am, and the same program at Barbee Library on Oak Island on July 13 at 11:00am. This program is appropriate for kids age pre-K to teenagers. The event includes the reading of a story about the largest animal in the ocean. Then kids participate in Olympic events where they compare their abilities to those of animals in the wild. They complete a long jump, for instance, to determine who can jump the farthest, kids or frogs. Gould will have live animals on hand. Kids are encouraged to get there early. The Oak Island Department of Parks and Recreation also has a number of other events taking place this summer:
Ocean Casting Seminar and Tour will be held at the Oak Island Recreation Center on July 20 at 9:00am. Learn ocean casting technique and what fish to catch with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission.
Alligator Walk and Talk takes place at the Recreation Center on June 23 at 10:00am. Participate in an alligator habitat seminar and then visit a live gator area with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission.
Bat Fans of Oak Island is held at the Oak Island Recreation Center on July 28 at 7:00pm. Learn about bat behavior, build your own bat box and see live bats with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission.
Bees on Oak Island takes place at the Oak Island Nature Center on 52nd Street, June 27 and July 11 at 10:00am. Participants will join in a discussion about bees and view a live bee observatory. Up Close with Coastal Water Birds will be held at the Oak Island Nature Center on June 29 at 11:00am. Join the Oak Island Sea Biscuit Wildlife Shelter to meet native coastal birds including Tim the Pelican, Shadow the Barred Owl and Scarlet the Red Tailed Hawk. Salt Marsh Interpretive Kayak Tour takes place at the Oak Island Nature Center on July 14 at 9:00am. Join the NC Wildlife Resources Commission to explore coastal marsh and wildlife on a light kayak paddle through the intra-coastal waterway. Single and tandem kayaks are available.
Caring for Aquatics Through Conservation Habits (CATCH) Workshop takes place at the Oak Island Recreation Center on July 25 and 26, at 5:00pm. For kids ages 8 to 15. Use the CATCH curriculum guide with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission to explore ways to teach about aquatic environments through fish biology, outdoor ethics, water safety and fishing skills. Participants must attend both three-hour evening classes to receive credit for the workshop.
Tracking Your Living Island takes place at the Oak Island Nature Center on August 4 at 9:00am. Explore Oak Island searching for tracks left behind by wildlife with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission. Coastal Reptiles and Amphibians will be held at the Oak Island Nature Center on August 18 at 9:00am. Get up close and personal with native reptiles and amphibians with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission. Oak Island Tree Life takes place at the Oak Island Nature Center on September 1 at 11:00am. Join the NC Wildlife Resources Commission to learn about trees native to Oak Island.
For more information on any of these programs, call the Oak Island Parks and Recreation Department at (910) 278-5518. 1

SHOWCASE The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!) The Musical Parody Makes its Brunswick County Debut in July STORY BY: LISA P. STITES
I
f imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Brunswick Little Theatre plans to give its regards to Broadway. This year’s summer musical, The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!), is a parody of traditional musical theater, poking fun at, and paying homage to, some of the most well-known and well-loved musical theater composers.
The show is made up of five acts -- Corn! (in the style of Rogers and Hammerstein – The King and I, The Sound of Music, Oklahoma!), A Little Complex (based on the musicals of Steven Sondheim, of Into the Woods fame), Dear Abby (a parody of the work of Jerry Herman – Mame, Hello Dolly!), Aspects of Junita (based on the work of
who can’t pay the rent, the villainous landlord, and the dashing hero, plus a standard advice-giving-matriarchal-figure. The story is presented five times, each time in the style of a different composer/composer and lyricist team. Those four main roles will be played by the same actors throughout the five acts, and the rest of the cast of seven will appear as farmers, party guests, dancing girls, cats, whatever. The cast will also provide the musical accompaniment on stage via piano. Iapalucci said she picked this show after talking about small-cast musicals with a friend. And then a few months later she was on an all girls’ weekend with her mother and three sisters, whom all happen to be music theater aficionados. While stuck in traffic, Iapalucci was looking for a way to keep the group entertained and read a description of the show. As they laughed over the song titles, Iapalucci said she knew she’d have to do the show someday. Song titles in Corn!, for example, include “Clam Dip,” “Sowillyquey,” and “Daylight Savings Time.” When Brunswick Little Theatre (BLT) was looking for directors to fill out the season this year, she said it seemed like a good opportunity to make this show happen. Two of the sisters along for the car ride that cemented the idea of doing this show are actually in the cast – Katie Deese and Elie Erickson. Deese’s husband Mark is also cast in the show, along with BLT regulars Carolyn Stringer and Gillian Carney. David T. Loudermilk, Jacob Caceres-Reyes and Logan Tart are also lending their talents to the cast. Iapalucci has a long history with BLT. She has directed Pippin, Bye Bye Birdie, Carni-
val!, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Oklahoma!, Suessical!, Oliver!, The Wizard of Oz, The 39 Steps, Into the Woods and Winnie-the-Pooh KIDS. She has also directed a youth show for the Thalian Association and worked there as a stage manager on Peter Pan, A Christmas Carol, The Addams Family, and A Secret Garden and as a costumer for 101 Dalmatians, American Idiot, and A Secret Garden. Some of the shows she has directed provide the fodder for this parody musical, but Iapalucci she said she’s not sure yet if some of her past experiences will find their way into this production. The Deeses, Erickson and Carney were in BLT’s 2006 production of Oklahoma!, and several of the cast were also in Into the Woods in 2014. “It would be interesting to see if anyone in the audience picked up on nods to previous BLT productions. Of course, it’s those sorts of details that I often include in my shows just to entertain myself…,” Iapalucci said. The Musical of Musicals (The Musical) is a show that will appeal to many. “There are layers upon layers of humor in this show,” Iapalucci said. “The musical theater lovers will get many of the references and really find it hilarious, but even if you aren’t well-versed in the entire catalog of each of these composers, you’ll still enjoy the show. I have read the show a dozen times now, and listened to the soundtrack twice as many times, and I still catch something new each time. Plus, it’s a super talented cast, and I know they will deliver a terrific evening of theater even if you’ve never seen another musical before in your life.” 1
The show will run July 22, 23, 29 and 30, and August 5 and 6 at 7:30 p.m. Matinees will run July 24 and 31, and August 7 at 3 p.m. All performances will be at Brunswick Little Theatre Mainstage, 8068 River Rd SE, Southport. Tickets were not on sale as of press time, but will be $20 for adults and $12 for students with identification. For more information, find Brunswick Little Theatre on Facebook, follow the theatre on Twitter, or visit www.brunwicklittletheatre.com.
Andrew Lloyd Weber – Evita, The Phantom of the Opera) and Speakeasy (in the style of John Kander and Fred Ebb – Chicago and Cabaret). Each act is done in the style of a famous American or British composer. Director Jen Iapalucci explained that the basic premise of the show is the old familiar vaudeville trope of the young ingénue www.SouthportMag.com / JULY 2016 / Southport Magazine 11

BIZ Q & A Fresh Floral Finds on Howe Street
Flowers for any reason and every occasion! STORY BY: LESLIE FOSTER
W
hether you are buying a single rose, a bouquet of wildflowers or 10 arrangements for a special event, Wild By Nature is the place to head. As a self confessed flower-buying addict, my discovery of Wild By Nature was serendipitous! This small cheerful shop has buckets of seasonal flowers, creative displays of hanging vases, shelves of unique vessels and the exquisite aroma of a summer garden.
Robin Weir, the owner of WBN is usually on the premises and really knows her stuff! She can put together a bouquet on the spot, offer advice on creatively displaying flowers or introduce you to the ease of “ air plants” (love these!). She and her staff make your shopping experience a very pleasant one. Wild By Nature sources beautiful fresh flowers from around the world, throughout the year. Their website is loaded with photographs of every type of arrangement for any kind of occasion. Next time you stroll down Howe Street, wander into this colorfully painted shop and let the beauty that is Wild By Nature wow you!
Q. When did Wild By Nature open in Southport?
A. We opened our doors on October 10 2014.
Q. What led you to becoming a creative floral designer?
A. An accident I must admit. I was learning how to throw clay on a wheel and had several containers that weren’t quite right, too heavy on the bottom, a ripple on the lip so I started arranging silk and dried flowers in them. After giving them to friends and family. Other people started asking me if they could purchase them, so a career was born and a passion that took me all the way to becoming an accredited member of the American Institute of Floral Designers, (there are only about 1,400 of us in the world). My passion for this industry still has me hooked on learning everything I can about flowers and design.
Q. I love the name of your business, How did you think of it?
A. I’ve always been a slightly crazy character and when I was younger you could say a little wild too but actually when I first started out I was calling myself “The Lone Arranger”. And the logo on my business card was an arrangement and a mask. See I told you I was crazy.
Q. There is something about walking into Wild by Nature that just makes you feel good — To what do you attribute that?
A. Oh that’s the magic of nature in action. It could be a happy plant, a bucket of colorful silks, the wonderful smelling blooms or even the
unusual textures of the natural containers that we have in the store, but it does make you feel good. I’m so lucky to be working with flowers everyday and to have Kelly Young and my sister Melody Ryan to help me out and keep me in line.
Q. Can you provide a short list behind the meaning of specific flower choices?
A. You know there are probably as many different meanings for flowers as there are for ways to say hello. But the ones that I have come to know over the years and like are: bird of paradise; “joyfulness and anticipation” hydrangeas; “heartfelt emotions” orchids indicate “thoughtfulness” and tulips are “ perfect love”. I better have some tulips in stock this weekend don’t you think?
Q. You sell “air plants.” Do tell!
A. Air plants are part of the bromeliad family and there are many different species that we carry. They happen to be my favorites kind of plant no dirt. These beauties grow high in the trees in tropical climates and attach themselves to the underside of the branches with what looks like roots. All their nutrients are absorbed through their leaves so all they need is sunlight and moisture to thrive. Here in the store we mist them with rainwater a couple times a week and of course we talk to them. We just can’t get them to answer us yet!
Q. You also sell unique vessels and vases for displaying flowers and plants — Can you describe a vessel and an eye-catching display!
A. Sure, I am lucky enough to have some great suppliers that provide me with unusual natural products like wooden bowls carved from one piece of wood, other popular containers that we showcase are vases of different styles and sizes that you can easily design in yourself. And we just got in a shipment of heads and faces that we have planted some fast growing succulents.
Check out southport magazine online at www.southportmag.com
Owner, Robin Weir We also put names in them such as “where is your head at?” “ If I only had a brain” and of course “air head”. My favorite is the faux succulents fashioned into a Mohawk called “no water, no brainier”.
Q. Where do you source your flowers?
A. One of the things that I found out very quickly was getting flowers here is not the same as getting flowers back in Connecticut. I had 5 wholesalers in Connecticut calling me daily asking me what they could deliver to me that day. Here the closest wholesaler that I deal with drives six hours from Virginia to deliver to me twice a week. Usually I pick up at the airport at least once a week from my favorite wholesalers out of New York and New Jersey. And for weddings I get shipments in from Holland. Having a good relationship with some of the best wholesalers in the country is key to having products that last and it keep my customers coming back.
Q. How can we sign up for your floral classes?
A. If you come into the store we have a email address book which will get you on our mailing list. We usually send out our class listing once a month. We take a break during the summer months but will be starting back up in September. Just give us a call and we will be glad to put your name on our list. But we would love to meet you. We also list them on our website, www.wildbynaturellc.com
Q. Ok. I just have to ask, what is your favorite flower?
A. That’s like asking who is your favorite child, but between you and me I love pincushion protea (that’s the flowers on my business card) it’s unique and interesting and since it’s a tropical flower it lasts longer than most garden flowers. Oh but then there is cymbidium orchids, sweet pea, lily of the valley, and on and on. 1
FUN QUESTIONS: FAVORITE FOOD: I love warm crusted bread with cold butter (unsalted) and boy does it show! FAVORITE BOOK: In March I read “ The Rent Collector” it is one of the best books I have read in a long time! FAVORITE MUSIC: I’m a sucker for old time rock and roll. I love to dance! FAVORITE PLACE TO TRAVEL: My all time vacation spot is Guavaberry Bay on Virgin Gorda, right next to the “Baths” FAVORITE THING ABOUT SOUTHPORT: Everything! But especially the people! Frankly, it’s always a great day for ice cream. Overlooking the Old Yacht Basin waterfront in Southport, Flava’s has been treating the locals and tourists for over 18 years and counting.
Paul and Marie Swenson opened Provisions Company back in 1993, and when the adjacent property became available in 1998…. Flava’s was born. It started out as a gourmet coffee and baked goods shop, then the Provisions T-shirt retail business really took off, and it evolved over the next couple years to what it is today: Flava’s Ice Cream! Maryah Smith, the manager in her sixth season sat down to discuss this Southport staple, and how customer service is top priority, along with the quality sweets. I asked her what makes Flava’s special? she says, “There is nowhere else in Southport you can find the diversity and variety of flavors of homemade ice cream, along with a great family atmosphere. Flava’s is dedicated to giving the customer a unique ice cream experience every time.” Flava’s serves over 24 assorted flavors, including custom specialties like Southport Sunset, which is a delicious coconut base ice cream, pineapple chunks with a strawberry ribbon. Some of the more popular flavors include Peach, Coffee Toffee, Death by Chocolate and Salted Caramel. You can drool over all their flavors and menu items on their website: flavasicecream.com
Flava’s also offers a wide variety of gluten-free ice cream, so that everyone in your party can enjoy their time at Flava’s. They even have homemade Italian Ice available to delight customers with lactose intolerance or dairy allergies. You will always find something yummy at Flava’s like ice cream sundaes, made with strawberry shortcake, pound cake and brownies made from scratch. They even have my
Have you ever had a brilliant idea for an ice cream flavor? Well here’s your chance. Flava’s introduces customer inspired flavors through their weekly contest. Just drop your suggestion in the box, or email your idea, and it might make it on the menu! If it does, they will even name it after you. Salted Caramel was a customer’s suggestion, but was so popular – it’s now a regular flavor. You may have just what they are looking for in the next big thing! Flava’s now offers your favorite flavors in pints and quarts to go so you can always have a little Flava – even at home. Maryah adds, “Not only do we want you down here to visit us, we also want you to have access to our delicious ice cream on the days you choose to stay home, and now it’s possible!” In the mood for an old fashioned milkshake or ice cream float? Flava’s has got that covered too. Take a little step back in time with a huge selection of vintage bottle drinks, Cheerwine, Crème Soda, Stewart’s Root Beer, RC Cola and Peach, Orange or Grape NeHi, who could ask for more on a hot summer day? If you are looking for something a little healthier, no problem. Nutrition shakes are now available and people love them. You can add your choice of fresh fruit like blueberries, mango, strawberries or raspberries to top it off.
Fun fact: Flava’s was named after a former manager who resembled the rapper Flava Flav, and carried the nickname Flava!
Flava’s is just the perfect souvenir of the family trip, or a gift to a friend that needs to come for another visit! You can see all the merchandise at - provisionwearusa.com Maryah reminded me that, “Flava’s is a family friendly place where locals and tourists come to make memories. The rocking chairs and picnic tables are the perfect setting for families to enjoy their time together and have fun.” Flava’s staff embrace this philosophy and it is apparent on all the grinning little faces, dripping with sweet sticky evidence. 1
favorite: ice cream sandwiches. You choose the ice cream and they sandwich in between two huge homemade chocolate chip cookies – now that’s what I call a dessert! Flava’s is also the home of the Provisions Company retail clothing line offering clothing from birth to XXXL. You will find tank tops in the summer, sweatshirts seasonally and t-shirts all year. They even have an enormous selection of hats, decals and koozies. If the ladies are looking for a Scala Sun Hat they will find a nice array of those as well. Local artist Jim McIntosh’s watercolor art is featured on some of their t-shirts if you are looking for something just a little different. Maryah fills online orders from the shop, and she ships all over the world. A t-shirt from www.SouthportMag.com / JULY 2016 / Southport Magazine 17

everly Thompson and Ronnie Weinstein met one night, long ago, when Ronnie was making dinner for a date in his apartment. Bev walked in with a friend who had a headache and thought that Ronnie, a practicing chiropractor, could work on her and help her out. Coincidentally, Ronnie’s best friend was dating her best friend. A week later, on May 1, 1982, they went on their first date. They’ve been blissfully married for 34 years. Ever since he first launched Bandera Architecture in 1986, Rich Bandera has been busy designing homes overflowing with style and scrupulous craftsmanship. His firm reaches from projects he was commissioned on in Boston in his early years to the present day in coastal North Carolina. Rich has been designing in Brunswick County for 12 years and has certainly made his mark on southern coastal architecture, especially in his hometown of Southport, North Carolina, where he lives with his wife, Kim.
Bandera’s signature style displays his understanding of what it means to design with sophistication and to create purposeful shelter. His experience and work history includes both residential and commercial projects that reach from private waterfront residences and multi-unit condominium complexes to showroom renovations and professional office buildings. The Weinsteins decided to work with Bandera after working with two previous designers and architects and lots of back and forth with decisions and ideas they
were not happy with. They felt that the previous concepts were too ‘serious’, ‘prison or chalet-like,’ and this project was important to the couple because they needed to emotionally preserve her parents home… the home her father built. Bev’s dad, John A. Thompson, retired from the Navy in 1962 and began living in Elizabethtown shortly thereafter. Thompson missed the sea and regularly traveled towards the coast. He loved and missed being on ships and he was drawn to the ocean. “The original cost of the home was $17,000, which was a really big deal at the time”, said Bev. Thompson bought the lot first used the land to finance to build the home and later went on to purchase the next two lots over the years. One lot was sold over the years, yet the lot immediately next-door remains and the Weinsteins have no intentions of selling and want to keep the land as a buffer. Bev’s dad passed away in 1993 and her mom followed in 2010. Renovation of the family home began in 2013. The original family home was one level, but the couple needed more room and wanted more interior, natural light, and the only option seemed to build up, yet they weren’t sure that would be possible. The original footprint was like that of a ship stemming from her fathers naval influence. It was a small footprint and every nook and cranny was filled and put to use. It was what he was used to from living on a ship…he had everything boxed out and

SERVING SOUTHPORT AND SURROUNDING AREAS
HOMESTYLE used every inch of the house. It was the perfect layout for their needs at the time. According to Bev, “Rich Bandera was the ‘saving grace’, he listened to us. We had spent 4 years in concept and couldn’t visualize what we wanted to end up with. Rich didn’t mind that we are nuts.” With Bandera, the couple found there was no intimidation and no ego. “He wanted the home design to be ‘ours’ – not his ‘Mona Lisa’. He explained everything and why with great simplicity,” adds Ronnie.
Rich didn’t mind that we are nuts. – Bev Weinstein So, the concept of building up was simple, but it wasn’t easy to carry out because the house wasn’t capable of supporting a second level, Bandera suggested a ‘pier system,’ or a post and beam construction. In plan, post and beam construction is minimal and open while stylish in appearance since rooms are more like open spaces and are not defined by horizontal walls and well-defined corners. After some foundation was dug out and a geotechnical report was done, it was confirmed that the post and beam concept would work. The first story would carry its own weight and the new second story would be supported by the new post and beam structure. Simply put, post-andbeam construction is a method of building with heavy timbers rather than dimensional lumber, such as 2x4s. In this case, the system of horizontal beams would distribute the weight of the upper level to a system of vertical posts. Next, the house was gutted down to the external walls… to the stud and brick. Ac-
cording to Ronnie, “It showed the stars.” There was no roof so Ronnie blindfolded Bev and brought her to the home so she could “see the moon coming up over the open sky.” The couple sat under the open sky and enjoyed the evening with Rich and his wife, Kim. Bev says, “We couldn’t see the stars in our Northern Virginia home, so this was so beautiful, to just see the stars and even get to see the moonshine.” The next step was figuring out how to bring in more natural light. The previous
design had low ceilings, the den had dark paneling, and the nearby trees hovered over the first story. The home was dark and gloomy. Early on, Bandera asked how the couple wanted people to feel when they entered the home. It was important to the Weinsteins that the feeling was casual and clutter free. Nothing about the home should feel formal. Bev adds, “I want guests, family and friends to feel relaxed… Like they have just put on comfy clothes and can kick back.” The living area had an original wall height of 8 feet and a lot was hidden under the eave lines. The new wall height is 9 feet, and it makes a huge difference. The area is set up to be comfortable socially inviting. There are no definitive walls breaking up the space between the living area, kitchen and dining room, so traffic is able to flow with ease. The couple’s decorating style is Feng Shui, much like the yin and yang within their relationship, and its clearly evident in the home’s main living area. All of the elements…wood, fire, earth, metal and water are represented and the space is warm and engaging. There are some 35 windows in the home and an 8-foot glass door that opens to the
original patio so there’s lots of light flowing into the space. Bandera suggested the glass doors as well as the Easy Breeze windows and doors, and they provide an enormous amount of light to the space as well as transporting the outdoors inside. He also added 6 feet to the original ceiling… making it a 12- foot ceiling that allows the sky to be visible overhead and the windowed walls allow gentle breezes inside. The combination of wood, metal and textiles enriches the room and almost feels like you’re sitting in the outdoors.
Across from the patio is the absolutely gorgeous stacked stone fireplace. It serves as a natural focal point and gives the space an urban vibe. It serves as a means to draw people in to share and visit before a warm fire while providing front to back energy.
The positioning of the furniture…wood, wicker and metal…encourage interaction and the patterns and textures blend with the original mosaic tile floor. The style is eclectic and casual incorporating earthy shades of turquoise, brown, green and white alongside coastal motifs.
Artwork over the mantle is illuminated with natural light, yet these accessories, although lovely, are simply secondary pieces in the big picture. The fireplace is the perfect size and scale of the space… if it were any larger it may demand too much interest.
Windows are great and I’m a big fan of 8-foot doors with glass. - Rich Bandera

IN ON YOUR WAY TO THE BEACH!
While watching lots of HGTV, the couple discovered the concept of venting out to the side of the house with a fan. It’s much easier to pull air and smoke out then to push it up and out. The Weinsteins love fires, but as Bev adds, “We just don’t chill much… we are always out doing their ‘passions’ or out with friends.” Yet, when they have the chance, they don’t mind being home. The white kitchen welcomes in an abundance of natural light and canned lights offer a source of both ornamental and task lighting at the same time as also illuminating the cozy island. Ample cabinet space keeps this kitchen organized and clutter free, while the hardwood floor, gray stone countertops and the green flowing in from outside add beautiful and bright color to the space. Stainless appliances and fixtures lend modernized elegance to the space. Upholstered barstools provide cozy yet tasteful seating, and the wood floor adds warmth along with rusticity to the refreshing white palette. Bev and Ronnie had seen similar wood floors in another Bandera Architecture home and Bev fell in love, so she found the mill, J.L. Powell & Company, in Whiteville, NC…where her mother is from. The couple visited the mill that has been a manufacturer of traditional wood floors since 1886. They picked out wood that is made up reclaimed lumber from pilings at the Cape Fear River Yard in Wilmington. The wood was then sliced and laid to dry. Head up the stairs and you’ll find more of the same open concept found on the first floor. “There was a strong concept of openness from the early stage”, adds Bandera, “and it was clear what my role was.” The concept is unmistakable when standing at the second floor railing while looking out and downward.

A downward view of the stairwell features the sleek hardwood stairs paired with cable railings to keep with the contemporary feel and look of the space. An outward view boasts a large aquatic metal sculpture of baitfish that wraps around the corner in the living area below. Roy and Rebecca Taylor with R Mended Metals in Wilmington, N.C, created the custom metal sculpture. Oversized windows flood the space with natural light, keeping the space bright and providing a view of the backyard making it a prime spot for an office. Ronnie’s office may have the best view in the house, and he thoroughly enjoys it. Behind the desk, sitting on a windowsill, are several small musical penguins that Ronnie has collected and received as gifts. Ronnie loves penguins…they make him smile. “I guess it’s the whole bird in a tuxedo thing”, Ronnie explains and chuckles. Well, they fit right in with the adjacent music room, which was a big part of the plan all along. The meticulously crafted ceiling completes this space. Craig, the son of Guy Phillips, a long time friend of the Weinsteins, is a master carpenter, and installed it while he was in town taking care of his father a few years ago. He was looking for
work and inquired about the job. It was all done with custom cuts and finishing molding. It provides a rustic feel while drawing the eye upward, and providing additional warmth and comfort to the indoor space.
The adjoining den is a lovely spot in which to sit and visit. There’s lots of memorabilia in the built-ins framing the window seat, and what an amazing view of a big live oak. The window seat is Bev’s meditation spot. She notes, “I love this space.” Yet, as intimate and lovely as the den is, the couple prefers to spend time downstairs because that’s where Bev’s parents hung out and preferred to spend their time. It’s unmistakable that this remembrance is meaningful to Bev.
The vaulted wooden ceiling and hardwood flooring add visual interest and a rustic feeling to a sun-drenched second floor music room and den. The custom cuts are meticulous, and the earth tones, textures and patterns of the wood help to provide a casual ambience. It’s hard not to feel comfortable in this modern space with organic elements.

I think this is my favorite space in the house. I like the rustic look of the wood, stone and metal blended together with modern details to create a gorgeous finish. Note how the red accents redirect your eye and the energy around the room…it’s bold, daring, exciting and warm.
The design includes a window seat to maximize the view of the outdoors and giant live oak, while providing extra seating and a bit of storage. The mix of colors, textures and patterns of the pillows ground the space and create a comforting contrast against the crisp white walls and built in cabinets that effortlessly and neatly frame the cozy little space.

Bev shares some memorabilia of her Dad’s Naval career and his legacy to honor the memory of the Veteran’s military service to his country.
Bandera designed the open space with an octagon-shaped room on either side. On one side is Bev’s craft room, and on the other side is the couple’s master suite. The craft room is equipped with sleek IKEA cabinets for storage and steel counters. In here, everything has a place and there’s a place for everything. This is where Bev enjoys her passion of creating. Sliding wood doors with glass panes open on either side to allow traffic, light and air to flow through, or close to allow privacy. When the doors are open you can still be a part of the major space and when closed you’re nearby but have privacy as needed. Bev says, “I can start a project and not have to clean up…just leave it and go back later.” Bev’s artwork appears throughout the house, as well as many photos of the kids and old family photos.

Bandera’s half wall design keeps the bedroom furniture out of sight and out of mind; shutting out the world, and making for a peaceful retreat.

Smooth and calming grey paint contrasts with the textures of the linens to bring out the different tones and character of the all-grey palette. A touch of color and additional texture appear in the accent pillow, lampshades and jewel toned artwork over the bed.

The master suite is light and relaxing. Bandera instilled a half wall concept to hide the bedroom furniture so there’s less weight and information… leaving the space more neutral and peaceful. The bath hosts a tub under a large window that allows the moonlight in. “When there’s a full moon I get in with crystals,” Bev adds, “I love a late soak in the dark with the moonlight so bright, its just energizing.” Bev keeps crystals on the tub and window ledge to draw energy from the sun and moon. The same sliding wood doors, except without glass panes, can be opened and tucked away when sharing the space or closed to offer retreat when needed for the master suite.

Voted “Most Pet Friendly Business!”
HOMESTYLE house had them and that we use them,” Bev shares with a smile. “Just spending time reading on the beach, entertaining friends, sitting on the back porch listening to the birds… It’s just so peaceful.” – Bev Weinstein Bev and Ronnie have a daughter, Crystal, who lives in Kill Devil Hills with her 2 boys…ages 7 and 12. They love to visit ‘Grammie’ and ‘Papa’. Bev smiles, “The kids love it here! They have their own space. They love Grammie’s creative and artistic encouragement, and the Oak Island beach is wide open for them to roam. There are no treacherous rocks like in Kill Devil Hills. The boys enjoy mini treks to Myrtle Beach, Southport’s waterfront and Fort Fisher. And, most of all, they love to stay up late!”
As for the outside there is plenty to see and plans for the future as well. Someday Bev would like to build a large co-op garden. Her parents had a gorgeous garden and grew huge tomatoes and corn. “Daddy polished the tomatoes and took them down to Johnny Vereen’s Red & White Grocery, put them in boxes, and took them to local restaurants.” None of the trees were removed, only trimmed.
The sleek master bath features a balanced grey and white palette with turquoise accents. The tub takes center stage under a large picture window that reaches out to the landscape and brings in natural light and views.
As far as summer plans, the couple spends their summers on the beach. They don’t travel, but instead invite yogis and friends to co-teach. There’s lots of people, family and kids coming and going to play and visit, and the couple always looks forward to having kids and family visit for the Fourth of July. “We never had guest rooms in the past, so we made sure this
Soothing turquoise with a bit of orange, blue and neutral accents make this an appealing and gender-neutral bedroom.
A contemporary bedroom design with playful splashes of color create both a cozy and a calming setting that says “Welcome to the beach!”
The home is a linear design in plan and the location is spectacular so the goal was to not make the home a monstrosity. It didn’t need to be an eyesore and needed to belong at the beach. Buddy Barnes with Wildwood Landscape enhanced the mature outdoor space, and it’s full of texture, color and patterns that blend into the neighborhood quite nicely. Bev’s mom loved hydrangeas, so they remain alongside the big oaks and back porch. Bev smiles, “She was a big fan.” I particularly enjoy the open iron fence that doesn’t block the breeze or view, and the nearby outdoor shower with two stations marked with tiger wood flooring. It’s just perfect to rinse off after a long day at the beach. The front door shines brightly against the otherwise neutral exterior and says “Welcome to 222 Trott Street”. The couple stands on the warm brown Trex decking and are sheltered by a wooden barrel vaulted entry flanked by bold columns to complete the sophisticated, elegant yet
casual and welcoming space. In closing: Would you do it again or change anything? Rich Bandera – “No, I wouldn’t change anything, it’s a great house.” Ronnie Weinstein – “I wouldn’t change a thing. I love it everyday!” Bev Weinstein – “The only thing I’d change would be to add one more window in the hall bath. That’s it. And yes, I’d do it all again…just I’d take a long nap next time.” For more information on Ageless Yoga Find them on the web: agelessyoga4u. com Find them on facebook at: facebook. com/AgelessYogaOakIsland Send an email to: classes@agelessyoga4u.com Or call: 910-248-YOGI (9644) For more information on Bandera Architecture – Find them on the web: banderaarchitecture.com Find them on facebook at: facebook. com/BanderaArchitecture Send an email to: banderaarch@earthlink.net Or call: 910-599-2252 (cell) or 910-454-4513 (office) See the transformation, go online to www.southport mag.com to see before and after photos. 1

Jeremy Norris, Owner of Broadslab Distillery, drives our group from the tasting room to the distillery for our tour.
Minimalist Moonshine
A legacy of simplicity passed down for many generations STORY BY: JENNIFER BARNETT PHOTOS BY: EMILY KLINEFELTER
I
f any of you have had the opportunity to visit our local ABC store, you most likely have seen the large display of Moonshine they have inside. I was curious. What exactly is moonshine? Isn’t it illegal? Isn’t it the stuff in jars that tastes like lighter fluid? Thankfully the General Manager, Todd Dunn, knew all the answers... 34 Southport Magazine / JULY 2016 / www.SouthportMag.com
Todd Dunn, GM of Southport ABC Store located at 714 N. Howe St. (910) 457-6924
He was more than helpful. He offered to sit down with me to tell me a little about Moonshine. I was concerned that it was going to be all technical and complicated. I pictured myself dizzy with confusion! On the contrary. Moonshine is simply whiskey that has not been aged. Once you age moonshine in barrels it takes on that golden color and the subtle flavors from the wood, to become Whiskey. I was thrilled to find out it was that simple. Made with corn, sugar, yeast and water; moonshine or white whiskey is becoming more and more common on the shelves of liquor stores. There are more than 34 distilleries in North Carolina alone and of those, 90% are legally producing and selling moonshine. Catdaddy Moonshine of Piedmont Distillers in Madison, NC was the first to legally produce moonshine in our state. Since then, the year 2005, others have followed suit, rang-
CHEERS ing from 70 proof to 130 proof. Now we have multiple flavors to choose from. Our local ABC store carries 7 or 8 of the possible 10 plus flavors available from several different distilleries. You can have your choice of peach, blueberry, apple pie, blackberry, black cherry and more. Definitely try Call Familys’ Uncatchable Sour Mash Moonshine in strawberry; it’s on my “must try” list. Todd says of you can’t find what you want in the store just ask, they can most likely get it for you in a few days (That includes everything not just moonshine). The Southport store has a great staff that is willing to help you find anything you need. They don’t mind if you take your time to look around. And look around you should! There are so many flavors to choose from and pretty bottles to look at. And distilleries are coming out with new recipes all the time! Moonshine is not just a back wood, out of a jar kind of a drink anymore. “It’s a drink for everyone,” said Todd. The quality is high and the flavor is smooth. It can be enjoyed in a mixed drink or straight up. Todd had a lot of information on NC distilleries. He is focused on adding to his already large NC Section, you can’t miss it as you walk in the front door! He also was able to tell me about the distilleries that are using their success to support charities. For example, Sundog 130 donates a percentage of their profits to the local animal rescue and Hell Hound supports Wounded Warrior Project with part of their proceeds. I really wanted to taste some of the different moonshines and with so many to choose from Todd suggested I start at a nearby distillery and take a tour and a tasting. I thought, what a great idea! On a beautiful Friday morning my husband, Phil, my nieces, Emily and Chelsea, and I hopped in the car and headed to Broadslab Distillery located at 4834 HWY 50 South in Benson NC.
tour, there is comfort in knowing who made the very bottle you are getting at the store. There is so much pride in what he does that perfection is always the result. It is all natural, organic, non-GMO; made with nothing artificial. It is the real deal! There are so many distilleries in NC and I vow to eventually try them all but after my morning trip to Benson, I have a new friend and a new favorite country get-away. I recommend you all go visit Jeremy and his staff at Broadslab. They are wonderful, knowledgeable people. I promise you will make a new friend, too. You can also visit their website, broadslabdistillery.com, or their Facebook page, facebook.com/BroadslabDistillery.
Jennifer, Emily and Chelsea in front of Braodslab
Many of you have most likely passed a sign for Benson or have seen it on a map when on your way to Raleigh. It’s a neat little town and just a few miles off the exit is the beautiful distillery complete with polished wood and a shiny tin roof that sits on over 100 acres of manicured cornfields and natural woodlands. The renovated buildings have all been in the family for generations, as well as the land. Broadslab Distillery, owned by Jeremy Norris, is a perfect excuse take a drive to the country! Broadslab Distillery offers tours and tastings at their location. For a small fee they will take you and your party on a relaxing ride down the old “Broadslab road”, the inspiration behind their name, to the distillery where Jeremy will personally give you a tour. He is surprisingly forth giving when it comes to the production of his spirits. The tour is very informative peppered with stories of his family, espe-
When thoughts settle on cially his father and grandfather. There is a passion for perfection that has clearly been handed down through the generations. Moonshine may not be your family legacy, but there are some who have stories dating back to their great, great, great “granddaddy”. And once you get past the ridiculous stumbling and bumbling of the bib -overall -wearing fellas on TV, you will realize that there is a culture of proud, talented, moonshiners running distilleries here in NC. Every bottle of Moonshine (Rum, too!) that leaves Broadslab Distillery begins its journey on the very land the distillery is on. “We call it dirt-to-bottle”, explains Jeremy. There are no additives of any kind. They have a few simple ingredients and they grow the corn on the property. After the distilling process, that Jeremy personally oversees; he bottles the spirits personally as well. After getting to know Jeremy on the
tradition and summer breezes through the trees think about Moonshine! The ultimate family recipe passed down from father to son to grandson and on.
During the month of our Independence celebrations, heritage and family fill our days. But several things come to mind when thinking about summer nights. The sounds, smells and colors bring to mind days of the past, tradition and Americana in general. Books and movies help create a picture of sitting on the front porch with generations of family watching lightning bugs and shooting stars. 1

Got moonshine? Here are some delicious recipes to turn you into a moonshine aficionado
W
e had the opportunity to taste Broadslab’s selection ofdirt-to-bottle creations and let me just say, I have a new favorite! I am fascinated with how just a few ingredients tweaked ever so slightly can change the look and taste of this moonshine. With a little patience Jeremy can create his golden Reserve from his crystal clear shine. With some creativity he is able to flavor his moonshine with natural ingredients to the taste of apple pie! They were all smooth and surprisingly tasty. I preferred the clear crisp taste of the Shine, while the others leaned towards the smoky taste of the Reserve. But ultimately the Apple Pie Moonshine prevailed and apparently many visitors to the tasting room agree. What ever your tastes maybe, there is an option for you, and the possibilities for mixed cocktails are endless. Most restaurants in our area do not offer moonshine but perhaps a friendly request could convince them to expand their options! Just the gluten-free advantage is a hit for me and I’m sure many others. Until then, here are a few examples of cocktails you can make at home!

This apple pie moonshine cocktail really resembles the flavors of apple pie. The cocktail is super smooth and ridiculously easy to drink. Serves 2.

Keep Yourself Healthy this Summer
Limiting your exposure to disease-carrying insects. STORY BY: LESLIE RESCHLY BSN,RN
A
s the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil loom in the near future, athletes around the world are weighing the risk of attending versus the risk of being infected with the Zika virus carried by mosquitoes. Although there has been no documented case of Zika infection in the US (current cases infected elsewhere), most experts agree it is a matter of time.
Asian Tiger Mosquito ... ouch! Ticks and Mosquitoes are the most frequent insect carriers of disease in the Southeastern USA. Travel to other areas of the United States may expose you to a variety of disease types but there are several diseases more prevalent in our area. Brunswick County is known to have 47 different types of mosquitos flying in search of a blood bite meal mainly from dawn to dusk. I have noted in my neighborhood that they bite 24/7! Mosquitos have gained local fame recently with their transmission of West Nile virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis which most commonly causes fever and flu-like symptoms but may progress to brain swelling and meningitis. Asian Tiger mosquitos were brought to the US from Japan in shipping equipment in the 1980’s. This type of mosquito is about 1/8 inch long and noted to have black and white stripes on its legs and a white stripe down the center of its head and back. It may also be linked to West Nile virus and Eastern Equine encephalitis in the US. Zika virus, also transmitted by mosquitos, causes symptoms of fever, joint/muscle pain, pinkeye and rash but can progress to Guillain-Barre syndrome, which is a muscle weakness and paralysis syndrome. More devastating, male and fe-
males who procreate within a period after being exposed can risk the birth defect of microcephaly or a poorly developed brain. The Lone Star Tick is prevalent in our area and can be, most often, identified by the white spot located on its back. Both nymphs and adult females bite humans but they also bite and are carried on animals so be sure to treat your pets that share your home! Lone Star Ticks have been associated with Ehrlichiosis, Tularemia and STARI. Ehrlichiosis has been found in our county and presents itself with fever, headache, fatigue and muscle aches. Medical treatment with antibiotics is usually successful. STARI or Southern Tick-Associated Rash Illness imitates the better known Lyme’s disease but is actually carried by the Lone Star Tick. The actual cause (i.e. bacteria or other) is not known. Symptoms include a rash at the site of bite, fatigue, fever, headache and muscle and joint pains. It also typically responds to treatment with an antibiotic. Lyme’s disease carried by the blacklegged tick and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, which is associated with the American dog tick, brown dog tick and Rocky Mountain Wood tick are well known for their symptoms but are not generally prevalent in our immediate area.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP YOURSELF REMAIN HEALTHY? •“Tip and Toss” any containers in your yard with minuscule amounts of water. Mosquitos lay eggs, which can even survive in dry or cold environments. One female Asian tiger mosquito can lay 500 eggs in her lifetime, which is typically 3 weeks. •Avoid wooded or brushy areas and hike in the middle of trails. Mosquito season in SE North Carolina is May-October with peak in July and August. Given the long season, it is noted that there can be 12 generations of mosquitos in one year! •Apply Repellent of your choice. It is recommended that it contain 20-30% DEET as directed or 0.5% Permethrin on clothing. EPA.gov web site has a tool for finding the insect repellent right for you! Please be sure to follow label directions especially with children and infants. •Wear lightly colored garments that cover your arms and legs. Launder in warm water and dry for at least 10 minutes to kill insects. •Be alert to bite hazards of areas to which you travel. Contact your medical professional if you feel you may have been “infected”. In particular, if you are of childbearing age, please follow the CDC recommendations for travel and precautions in areas known to have Zika.
Mosquito Yard Spray Big bottle of cheap Mint flavored mouthwash 3 Cups of Epsom salt 3 stale cheap beers (12oz each) Mix all ingredients together until Salt is dissolved. Spray anywhere you sit outside. (i.e.: around the pool, deck, or the garden) It will not harm plant or flowers. It lasts approximately 80 days before you need to re-spray. Mosquitoes and bugs hate the mint smell!

Classes will be held Saturday, July 9, August 13 and September 10. The “About Boating Safely” course satisfies state requirements. Any person born on or after January 1, 1988, must complete an approved boating safety course before operating a vessel with a motor of 10 hp or greater on North Carolina waters. Even if not required by law to get the North Carolina boating license, many boaters take the boat safety course to save on their PWC or boat insurance. Individuals who successfully complete the USCG Auxiliary “About Boating Safely” (ABS) course and exam are awarded U.S. Coast Guard certificates and cards. Taught by certified USCG Auxiliary instructors, the USCG ABS course applies to all recreational watercraft (powerboats, PWCs, sailboats and boats which are paddled). The course covers general information about boats and maintenance, preparing for safe and enjoyable outings, navigation rules and aids to navigation, guidelines for operating your boat or PWC safely, what to do in case of boating emergencies, and state-specific laws and regulations you must follow. Courses are taught at the Duke Energy Center, 8520 River Road in Southport from 8:00am to 4:00pm on Saturday, July 9, August 13 and September 10. Course fee is $30.00 per person or $50.00 for two by cash or check at the door, or PayPal on flotilla’s website.
