It is no wonder that when we started putting together this Vacation Issue we immediately thought of the movie “Vacation” where Chevy Chase takes his family on a cross-country drive to the Walley World theme park where it seems - anything that can go wrong, does! Clark’s intentions are always good. He just wants to his family to spend time together and have fun. It’s what any dad wants for his family when on vacation. A special Thanks goes out to the stars on the front cover: Taylor Jolliff, Daisy (the dog), Leslie Foster, Missy and Ron Ronquillo, and of course Patrick McGowan, our photographer. This group of characters fit their role as the Griswolds perfectly when recreating the movie poster from the 1983 hit. May all your summer vacations be full of fun and good memories this year. Also Happy Father’s Day to all of the Dad’s out there who are trying their best to give your families the trip of a lifetime! That is why we love you!!!

long the beaches and coastal towns in June, it’s not unusual to see cars loaded down with luggage, beach gear, bicycles and chairs. As an adult living in a coastal town I try not to obsess and lose my temper over the traffic and crowded ferry rides. Instead, I try to remember the excitement I felt when I was one of those kids; packed in the back seat of a car with my Mad Libs, pillow and snacks, asking “Are we there yet?” My family took a vacation every summer to North Carolina. It was always a long drive and at the time, my Dad listened to a CB Radio to keep up on speed traps and other road issues. When I think back on it now it seems comical, but at the time it was torture to us kids. Our only saving grace was when we would convoy down with my Uncle and his family and the grown ups would let us talk on the radio. “Breaker 1-9, this is the Silver Bullet, what’s your 20?” Our car was called the Silver Bullet because it was a silver Volkswagen Rabbit (tiny car). Yep, and did I mention that there were 3 of us kids in the back seat? In spite of the tight quarters, my Father always made sure that our summer vacations were full of great memories.

Welcome to Your Home Away From Home STORY BY: LISA P. STITES

eaches, golf, boating and fishing. Southeastern North Carolina is truly a vacation destination for families and people of all ages. With some of the State’s finest beaches, Oak Island, Caswell Beach and Bald Head Island offer plenty of vacation rental selections, making it easy to find the perfect beach house or condo to suit your needs.

Hotels and motels on Oak Island also welcome guests who want to wake up to the sound of the surf and head straight to the beach for some surfing, fishing or just relaxing on the sand. The beach towns have pristine marshes for exploring by kayak and serve as picture perfect landscapes for photographers. Caswell Beach

visitors love to visit the Oak Island Lighthouse, and in the Town of Oak Island, visitors can choose from more than 60 beach accesses. There are also many places to access the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway for fishing or boat watching. Visitors to Bald Head Island, which is accessible only by ferry or boat, can rent a golf cart

and spend a day exploring the island. The beach towns have plenty of choices for great seafood dinners and there’s nothing quite like seeing the nighttime sky over the ocean, but for those who long for a more traditional town setting, Southport is just the thing. Southport’s tree-lined streets take us back in time to a simpler, quieter pace. In Southport you’ll find unique local shops and restaurants serving up hot dogs, gourmet meals and everything in between. The City has often served as a set for television and film; one of the more recent feature films to feature this charming locale was “Safe Haven.” Visitors will also enjoy a walkway out into the marsh, the City Pier and adjacent Waterfront Park, the Old Smithville Burying Grounds, the North

Carolina Maritime Museum and Southport Visitors Center at Fort Johnston, and the Old Jail Museum. The Southport waterfront is a popular place to sit and swing on one of the benches or walk along the shore listening to the peaceful sounds of the water. Don’t feel silly pulling over to park just to watch a huge cargo ship or the Coast Guard go by – locals do it all the time because it never loses its appeal. There’s just something special about watching a huge ship passing quietly by. Picture yourself waking up in a small and sleepy Southern town with all the grace and charm most people think exist only in the movies. It’s real, and it’s here. Now find the perfect backdrop for your dream vacation.

CURRENTS CAPTAIN NEWTON’S INN 120 W. Moore Street, Southport www.captainnewtonsinn.com

Just one short block up from the water, Captain Newton’s Inn offers historic and comfortable accommodations among centuries-old Live Oaks. The Inn has three well-appointed rooms in different sizes and style. Room amenities include private bathrooms, a small wine refrigerator stocked with bottled water, wireless internet and cable television. Just across the street is a quiet park with the majestic 800-year old Indian Oak Tree. Stroll through the park on your way to the water or take some time to swing, rock and just watch and listen. The Inn was built on one of the original 100 lots laid out by the city founders, and the house has been part of Southport since 1886. It was built by Captain Walker Newton (a renowned river pilot of his time) and updated since. The inn sits only one block from downtown Southport and all of the great places to eat and shop. Amenities include a daily continental breakfast and a wine and cheese reception.

RIVERSIDE MOTEL

103 West Bay Street, Southport www.loisjanes.com/rooms/riverside-motel Located literally on the Cape Fear Riverside, this motel offers guests breezes off the water and a front-seat view of the boats, birds and lighthouses that paint the coastal picture. Just off the back porch is where the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway meet. The motel was founded in the 1950’s by the same family that also owns and operates Lois Jane’s. There is a seafood restaurant right next door, and others within walking distance. Guests will also enjoy Waterfront Park, just steps away from the motel. With benches, picnic tables and a pier, this park is a popular spot for walking along the water, feeding the gulls and fishing. It’s also a popular place to watch the ships pass as they travel to and from the port in nearby Wilmington, NC. The Pilot Tower, used by river pilots who guide ships through the sometimes treacherous local waters to the port, is adjacent to the motel. All rooms have TVs, air conditioning, a refrigerator, microwave and coffeemaker. Some rooms have a queen bed and others have two full size beds. There is a two-night minimum on weekends. While children are welcome, pets are not.

LOIS JANE’S

106 West Bay Street, Southport www.loisjanes.com

Family tradition is at the heart of this B&B directly across from the river. This gorgeous home was built in the late 1800s and was renovated in the 1990s by the original owner’s great-grandchildren and turned into the B&B. The family welcomes guests but still uses the home as a gathering place for special occasions. The sibling team that oversaw the renovation had realized that selling the home was just not an option, and what began as a minor repair to plaster turned into a complete renovation. They named the Inn for their mother and have been open for business since the mid-1990s. Guests can enjoy accommodations in one of several rooms, all with picture-perfect views of the river or garden – Miss Mary’s Room (with private access to the balcony and breathtaking views of the Cape Fear River), Davey’s Room (named for the River Pilot and outdoorsman in the family), Lois Jane’s Room (named for the owners’ mother, who loved to watch over the water and enjoy the view of Bald Head Island), Meezie’s Room (near the rear of the home under a giant Willow Oak tree), and Skip’s Suite Upper and Skip’s Suite Lower (tucked into a guest cottage just behind the main building). All guests can enjoy a full Southern breakfast each morning and wine and hors d’oeuvres are served at 5 p.m. daily. The Inn also offers packages and can accommodate parties by offering up to 14 rooms (utilizing the family-owned Riverview Inn across the street). Guests can also order champagne and chocolates to help celebrate special occasions. www.SouthportMag.com / JUNE 2016 / Southport Magazine 7

SOUTHPORT INN

119 N. Davis Street, Southport www.thesouthportinn.com In 2013, Innkeepers, Mark and Jane Ramach, sold everything, bought a boat, named her Average Looper and started a trip called The Great Loop, according to the Southport Inn’s website. Southport was one of the couple’s first stops and after travelling more than 6,000 miles through 18 states and Canada, they decided to settle there permanently. The Southport Inn is an historic landmark, originally built by Samuel S. Drew for R.W. McKeithan and his wife, Amelia, in the spring of 1894. Robert W. McKeithan, born January 20, 1843, was an enlisted Confederate in the NC 1st Artillery Regiment, Co. E. Later in 1896, he was selected as a delegate to the state’s Democratic Convention. During the turn of the century, McKeithan manufactured turpentine in nearby Supply, according to the site. The Inn’s accommodations pay homage to the home’s history – Amelia’s Room, The Captain’s Room and The Davis Room. The home’s high interior ceilings are crafted with tongue and groove bead board in concentric patterns. The floors are original painted heart pine. Southport bow trim, a trademark of North Carolina coastal craftsmen, adorn the windows and doors. In 2004, The Southport Inn Bed & Breakfast was spared the wrecking ball. Hopefuls flock here by the thousands. Universal Studios is down the street from the Hollywood Bowl is down the street from the Dolby Theatre where the Oscars are held each year. There are stars on the sidewalk and sitcoms on the stages and a light atop the famous Capitol Records building that blinks “Hollywood” in morse code all night long. Here, Monkeys fly and ET phoned home and Superman leaps tall buildings at a single bound. Here’s the birthplace of Minions and Frozen and Shrek. The backyard of Bogart, Garland and Taylor. Johnny Carson held court here. Lassie lazed. Marilyn lounged by the pool. Hollywood’s the place to be discovered, to reinvent oneself, to see one’s name up in lights. It’s a town borne from imagination, a culmination of the American Dream. More than 10 million people visit Hollywood annually. And for most of them, the first question they’re asked upon returning home is, “Did you see any movie stars?” Celebrity starspotting can be part of the Hollywood experience, but first let’s cover some history. The area we know as Hollywood today was originally settled in 1853. At that time, it consisted of little more than one adobe hut. Throughout the remainder 18 Southport Magazine / JUNE 2016 / www.SouthportMag.com

of the 19th century, it was an agricultural community of citrus groves and avocado trees. In 1887, a developer by the name of Harvey Wilcox purchased land in the area and christened the plot Hollywood, after the suburb of Chicago where his wife grew up. Later that year, the small community began to flourish. By 1900, Hollywood boasted a post office, a newspaper and two markets. A two-room schoolhouse opened in 1903. The school would later become Hollywood High School, and famous alumni of the school would later include Judy Garland, Lana Turner, Mickey Rooney and Carol Burnett. The mascot of the high school became (and still is) The Sheik, taken from a 1921 Rudolph Valentino film of the same name. But in the early 1900s, the thoroughfare of Hollywood Boulevard was little more than a dusty trail. Then the Hollywood Hotel opened at the corner of Hollywood & Highland (where the massive Dolby Theatre stands today). The 40-room hotel was immediately promoted as an idyllic country getaway from the boomtown of Los Angeles ten miles to the east. The idea caught on and soon after the hotel was expanded to include 104 additional guest rooms, a wide lobby, a chapel, a music room and a

popular ballroom. As the filmmakers and early silent movie stars of central Los Angeles were wiled by the charms of rustic Hollywood, the hotel became home base for the who’s who of early Tinseltown. The popular restaurant of the hotel began painting stars on the ceiling above certain chairs at certain tables to help them remember where each celebrity liked to sit while frequenting the hotel. These stars were the precursor to the stars that now line the sidewalks of Hollywood Boulevard as part of the famous Walk of Fame. The early American filmmakers didn’t find Los Angeles by accident. In the ear-

ly 1900s, Thomas Edison, the inventor of the motion picture camera, held patents on the cameras and the novelty films produced on the devices. Edison’s company was based in New Jersey, so filmmakers began moving to the West Coast where Edison’s patents were difficult to enforce. When the filmmakers discovered Hollywood, they found a perfect location for shooting movies; a dry, sunny climate with an amazing variety of natural settings: desert, mountains, beaches and rugged cowboy country. In 1910, the first movie was produced in Hollywood. The film “In Old California,” by D.W. Griffith was shot three blocks east of the Holly-

wood Hotel. Funny enough, the film was never screened in Hollywood because movie theaters (and alcohol) were banned at the time by a conservative town council. Hollywood wouldn’t be stymied; almost immediately, the world went crazy for films from Hollywood. The movie-going public couldn’t get enough. Film studios began popping up all over town. By the 1920s, Hollywood was the epicenter of the filmmaking universe. The movie business soared, soon becoming the fifth largest industry in the United States. Hollywood had arrived...and never looked back. When the ban on movie theaters was finally lifted, a bounty of Hollywood landmarks sprang from the dust. Many of these landmarks remain, and are surely included on any tour of Hollywood today. In 1922, Sid Grauman’s Egyptian Theatre opened. King Tut’s Tomb had recently been unearthed and the world was crazy for all things Egyptian. The theatre was designed to resemble an Egyptian ruin. This was the site of Hollywood’s first movie premiere, Robin Hood starring Douglas Fairbanks. Next came the erection of the famous Hollywood Sign in 1923. The first sign read “Hollywoodland,” and was placed on a hill overlooking Hollywood as an advertisement for a real estate development. The sign was made of wood and studded with 4,000 light bulbs. The original sign lit up at night. It flashed in segments, “Holly,” “Wood,” and “Land.” It cost $21,000 to erect and was only intended to remain for 18 months. But after the boom of Holly-

wood, the sign grew to become a major icon and was left in place. Over the following decades, the old wood sign fell into disrepair. It was restored in 1949 and the letters “land” were removed from the end of the sign so that it now read “Hollywood.” The light bulbs were also removed as a fire hazard. By the 1970s, the sign was falling apart again. The first “O” had partially collapsed, leaving what looked like a lowercase “u”. The final “O” fell down completely so that for a number of years the sign read “Hullywod”. In 1978, Playboy founder Hugh Hefner started a campaign to restore the sign with a more permanent structure. He put each owner of the letters up for adoption at a cost of $28,000 each. Gene Autry paid for the second “L,” Hugh Hefner paid for the “Y,” singer Andy Williams paid for the letter “W,” and rocker Alice Cooper paid for the second “O”. Today the sign is constructed of steel. Each letter is 45 feet tall and the entire sign is 350 feet long. It takes approximately 275 gallons of white paint to paint the sign. The famous El Capitan Theatre opened in 1926, and features a giant Wurlitzer organ that was played during performances. The Orson Wells classic Citizen Kane was premiered here in 1941, when no other theater dared screen the controversial film. Hollywood boomed again in 1927. Sid Grauman opened his famous Chinese Theatre, designed to resemble a massive, red Chinese pagoda. As theatre construction was being completed, a young actress by the name of Norma Talmadge accidentally stepped in some wet cement in the theatre portico. As a joke, she added her signature to the footprint and a Hollywood tradition was born. Today the theatre boasts the handprints and footprints of more than 200 celebrities, and is a must on any tour of Hollywood. That same year the famous Hollywood Roosevelt hotel (named for Teddy Roosevelt) opened; the hotel was financed, in part, by Douglas Fairbanks and Mary

CURRENTS Pickford. Two years later, the first Academy Awards ceremony was held at the hotel and was hosted by Fairbanks. Tickets for the event were $5 and 270 people attended the ceremony and private dinner. The entire ceremony lasted less than 15 minutes and a film called “Wings,” one the first Oscar for Best Picture. Clark Gable and Carole Lombard once lived in the hotel’s penthouse at the rate of $5 per night. Today the Gable & Lombard Penthouse starts at $6,000 per night. Marilyn Monroe also once called the hotel home and she had her first photo shoot on the diving board of the swimming pool. Today the Marilyn Monroe Suite overlooking the swimming pool goes for $1,300 per night. Some guests have reported seeing the ghost of Marilyn in the room’s mirror.

It’s easy enough to see A-list homes. Tour companies like LA City Tours provide bus tours into the Hollywood Hills to see homes of the rich and famous. Jump ahead now to 1960 when Hollywood’s ubiquitous Walk of Fame was born. Roughly 1,500 stars were part of that first installation, terrazzo and brass stars (each featuring the name of a celebrity) installed on the sidewalk along Hollywood Boulevard. Today, the Walk of Fame has more than 2,500 stars extending along both sides of the boulevard for 15 blocks. There are five different categories for which one may receive a star (movies, television, music, radio

and live performance). The only celebrity to have five stars, one in each of the five categories, is Gene Autry, the “Singing Cowboy.” In order to receive a star on the Walk of Fame, the recipient must be nominated. Those nominations go to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The selection process is kept secret. The Chamber of Commerce receives about 200 nominations per year and the committee approves approximately 20. Kim Kardashian has been nominated but she does not have a star. Some movie stars have no interest in having a star on the Walk of Fame. This list includes Hollywood heavy-hitters Clint Eastwood, George Clooney, Al Pacino, Denzel Washington, Robert DeNiro, Leonardo DiCaprio and Madonna. Finally, no trip to Hollywood is complete without some serious star spotting. It’s easy enough to see A-list homes. Tour companies like LA City Tours provide bus tours into the Hollywood Hills to see homes of the rich and famous. A drive along the famous Mulholland Drive offers views of homes owned by Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars and Jack Nicholson. A drive through the quiet, tree-lined streets of Beverly Hills provides glimpses of homes formerly owned by Lucille Ball, Elvis, Michael Jackson and more. It’s extremely rare, however, to see the stars around their homes. Out and about around Hollywood (the restaurants, nightclubs and shopping malls) are a better bet to rub elbows with the rich and famous. For a sure thing, check out the website www.seeing-stars.com for a list of all movie premieres, star award ceremonies and celebrities scheduled to immortalize their handprints and footprints in cement at the Chinese Theatre. Then simply show up at the appointed time for a front row seat to Hollywood royalty. Don’t forget to ask for an autograph or photo. The folks back home might demand proof of your quarry. 1

BIZ Q & A Hop Aboard!

Rev Puts The “ Fun” in Southport Fun Tours! STORY BY: LESLIE FOSTER

S

outhport was voted Happiest Seaside Town in America (Coastal Living Magazine 2015) and it’s a safe bet that Fun Tours, the electric tram tour company owned and operated by “ The Rev”, has something to do with that! Take a seat aboard this open-air tram (seat belts provided) and enjoy a 45-minute tour of historic Southport, the waterfront, movie locations, and historic homes, even a jail! Your tour guide is the one and only “Rev”, an entertaining fellow (and legit Blues musician) who enjoys his guests and their stories as much as he likes regaling them with his own.

Q. HOW DID YOU COME TO CALL SOUTHPORT HOME? A. My wife, Deb and I lived in our boat for several years, traveling from Lake Michigan to Virginia. Eventually, we docked in Southport and the Dome came down.

Q. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO OPEN FUN TOURS? A. Wherever I travel, I like to explore the history of the area. When we arrived in Southport, I read several books about the city and was amazed at how interesting the history and culture are. We were considering putting down roots and starting a business. There were no tours at that time except for Katie’s Ghost Tour and we realized that a guided tour would be a great activity for tourists. It’s also fun for locals and their guests. It’s a perfect fit for me-I’ve been an entertainer all of my life.

Q. PEOPLE CONTINUALLY RAVE ABOUT THE TOURS; WHAT’S YOUR SECRET? A. I make learning fun! We cover history, culture, architecture, movies and more. But I enjoy making people laugh, and my passengers often join in with their own humor. My customers often say that our tour was the best thing they did while on vacation.

Q. DO YOU HAVE A “FAVORITE” FACT THAT YOU CARE TO SHARE? A. Here are a few: Southport was part of the Underground Railroad; cows and chickens were allowed to roam the streets until the early 1900’s; at the height of shrimping, over 90 boats supported the industry. I am constantly learning new and surprising things about Southport.

Q. YOU HAVE A SHIP’S BELL ON YOUR CART. WHAT’S ITS PURPOSE? A. It’s the “bad joke” bell. If a passenger heard a bad joke, he can call for a bell. If a passenger tells one, we’ll give him a bell too, because we’re all full of bells!

Q. DOES ANYONE FILL IN FOR YOU, REV? A. I do all the tours myself, but I want to give a shout out to the wonderful volunteers at the Visitors Center who do such a great job.

Q. CAN CUSTOMERS HIRE YOU FOR A PRIVATE OR EVENING TOUR? A. We do private events and group tours by reservation. We don’t do evening tours.

Q. YOU ARE A PROFESSIONAL MUSICIAN AND THE OWNER OF FUN TOURS; WHICH GIVES YOU THE MOST FUN? A. I enjoy both. I’m so proud to show people around our great town & I love meeting our customers, who come from all over the world, but music is my life-long passion. I’m glad I can do both.

Q. TELL US ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE SOUTHPORT STORIES!

A. There have been so many. One day, I pulled up to the Crimes of the Heart house and 2 of my adult passengers announced that they appeared in the movie when they were children. Sometimes it’s a small world on the cart. I had some passengers from Illinois and discovered that one of them was my brotherin-law’s gold partner in Chicago! Everyday, the passengers and U enjoy interacting with the very friendly Southport locals, who are known to shout “Don’t believe a word he says!”

The Rev (Daniel Guetschow), owner of Southport Fun Tours, poses with a group of happy customers.

Q. HOW HAVE YOU SEEN SOUTHPORT CHANGE OVER THE LAST 5 YEARS? A. We’re excited about all of the new businesses and people who are discovering our beautiful town. Yet so far, we have kept the small town feel. And Jodie got his driver’s license! 1

HOMESTYLE drawing as much heat indoors as a darker roof is said to do. Sometimes a monochromatic scheme is nice to call attention to a front door, accentuate a unique set of shutters or call attention to a dramatic feature. Here, rather than competing with it, the palette highlights the view…definitely a smart choice. Perfect pairings of board-and-batten siding combined with shake shingles set the stage for a welcoming front porch all the while the soft midday sunlight offers a timeless charm when meeting the cool blue ceiling. Oversized chairs, colorful pillows, lush plants and few festive accessories burst with color, bringing nature right to the front glass-panel door. Two additional double glass-panel doors open widely, to screened doors, allowing the breeze in and adding to the low-key elegance that defines this home. The view and just the right shades of white and cream go a long way in brightening and guiding the palette inside the house as well. White trim and cream-colored walls make the most of the abundant natural light from the enormous, almost floor-to-ceiling, windows and play up the natural light, the earth tones of the furnishings and the dramatic scale of the living room’s 23 foot ceiling. White built-in cabinets border the fireplace, framing it neatly on that wall. Built-

However, the 4400 square foot, historic waterfront home has enormous framework and appeal. A .26-acre through lot, having frontage on two public streets, allows access from Brunswick Street with a magnificent marsh view while access from the W. West Street side captures the mature landscape that flourishes and climbs in this charming, peaceful neighborhood. From the curb, the right shade of taupe

goes a long way in brightening this house. This creamy neutral shade is classic, light and clean without making the house look too stark in the afternoon sunlight. in cabinets like these are a great way to add storage to any space and stow the entertainment center/sound system. Painting them a bright white, and adding a little direct light, showcases the art and translucent glassware on display, creating a little depth and giving a bit of personality to the space. The wide-open space of the first floor is a mix of the couple’s furnishings, positioned just so, to take advantage of an amazing water view. A stylish oversized sofa and two cozy wicker chairs topped with vibrant blue and green patterned pillows, are arranged in a semi circle facilitating conversation… sunbeams recurring daily…and a modest area rug grounds the space.

Rustic window frames hang overhead, mirroring the windows, and playing up the look of an old beach cottage. There’s even an interior window that can be opened fully to invite additional light and air into the upstairs den. The pared-back neutrals and hardwood flooring create a natural backdrop for an indoors-outdoors theme. Textured fabrics, loose linens and comfortable, coastal furnishings sit alongside inspired collections of coastal and family keepsakes. This space was created to feel welcoming, luxurious and ready for entertaining. The large-scale ocean scene unites the room’s diverse elements. It’s fair to say, this is a modest, cozy room and home. There’s nothing contrived

about it…it’s relaxed and natural. But, the view is spectacular and makes a drop-dead statement of it’s own. The King’s say it’s what they will miss most about the home. They love to sit, visit and entertain with the view of both the Oak Island and Bald Head Island lighthouses as the backdrop while watching ships round the corner and

listening to the chiming of sailboat rigging echoing from the nearby marina. The outdoor space is clearly ideal for entertaining. Wink adds, “It’s a great space. We are always entertaining with family and friends. We love the view. It’s just beautiful. We have the best sunsets; we watch ships rounding the corner and dolphin swim into

the marina. It just never gets old. Just the other day we saw what seemed like 1000 ibis in the marsh, anticipating the rain.” With five kids and five grandkids between them, the porches are always occupied with family from Atlanta, Wilmington and Greenville, South Carolina. Carol adds, “We will miss the windows and the openness and, of course, the decks. There are no bugs on the upper deck because of the height…bugs don’t fly that high. The breezes are just heavenly. You can see cars going over the Oak Island Bridge at night (to the right) and see beyond the battery island (to the left) on a clear day.” Both love to cook... Phil likes to grill steak or fish. Carol is half Italian so, she whips up an awesome fettuccine alfredo or another yummy pasta dish. And cooking is never an unpleasant task in this specialized kitchen with its welcoming island, professional appliances, a separate ice machine and stunning views. I was greeted here with a plate of cookies… macaroons, raspberry and chocolate covered shortbreads and a glass of limeade…such a welcoming and kind gesture. The island features a cheerful application of color and materials that invite guests to kick off their shoes and stay awhile. It seats three while three lucent pendants suspended above the island make an artistic statement as they shed light on the setting. Keeping the cabinets pared down and countertops neutral maintains the simplistic and charming feel, allowing the focus to be on the amazing view. There’s no hulking millwork and bulky appliances competing with the view…the entire space is built around the view and captures the brightness and light of the outdoors.

HOMESTYLE

An over-the-sink window does double duty as a pseudo backsplash making certain the space feels clean, open and bright as it anchors the wall of cabinets to the countertop, as it seems to melt into the matching sink. This sunlit window, left bare, literally pops from the sill and highlights the view. Open shelving borders the window, providing storage, without compromising the airy feel of the space and displaying glassware and accessories making sure the space feels neat yet cheerful. The open floor plan allows the space to flow naturally from the kitchen, to the dining and living quarters. I love this feature

since the idea of having a singular entry means someone always gets ‘stuck’ in the kitchen. Carol enjoys that about the home, “This house flows nicely since there’s no separation between the living, dining and entertaining space.” Doric columns create vertical lines framing the lower level and highlighting the dining area at the same time. A small half wall grounds a set of columns and separates the space while still allowing for light and traffic to flow freely. The pendant light suspended from the lower ceiling above the table makes an artistic statement while shedding light on the setting and provid-

ing an intimate space for sharing a meal. On one side of the kitchen hangs a collection of prints in gallery formation. One of the photos is Wink’s father, fishing with friends in the area in the late 40’s. Another is a shot of Wink’s great aunts with Ernest Hemingway and the top photo is of Hemingway, which, according to Wink, has no connection, other than “it was just a good place for the fish picture.” The opposite side of the kitchen opens to a small bar area and wine cellar. The bar is neat and tidy with stainless steel fixtures, a stone grapevine backsplash and open glass cabinets to showcase glassware and

utensils. The wine cellar is equipped with durable tile flooring, cedar fixtures, and an abundance of storage that makes this a smart and hardworking space. Modeled after standard wine displays, the shelving units are the same as the walls to make the wine being stored here the focal point. Decorative details such as framed art arranged on the walls, a lovely antique Sigmund Romberg desk and an assortment of patterns and textures offer a lovely nod to the past yet the space still feels completely contemporary. Understated bliss prevails in the master suite with the antique bed, lively printed duvet and complimentary pillows. This is a calm, serene space with simplicity of choices. The neutral tones and hues create a relaxing retreat while light on pattern, the space is heavy on interesting textures. Simple window coverings, amber and gold-colored furnishing balance out the vivid colors of the painting over the bed, increasing visual impact and reflecting a timeless, soft and graceful style. Note the small 8x8 office just off the master bedroom. Once a porch, Wink decided to convert the space into this modest, no-nonsense workplace when his

HOMESTYLE

neighbors new home blocked the view. Not an inch is wasted here, the space is full of memorabilia... photos, books, nautical fare and mementos from Wink’s ‘past life.’ The board-and-batten remains, painted white, alongside the woodwork providing a comforting sense of enclosure and the sky blue brings a calm, coastal feel to the traditional paneled ceiling. All these elements add character and a little old beach cottage nostalgia to the small yet functional space. Louvered double doors blur the lines between work and relaxation, keeping the two quarters separate yet close by when a bit of work needs to be done. The master bathroom, featuring an oversized Jacuzzi, a walk in tiled shower and double vanity with large mirrors has a fresh, coastal feel. Cool green walls border glossy white and silver surfaces to form a unique color palette while a tiffany style light fixtures above the tub. Collections of coastal prints and glass framed shower add visual interest to the planes of crisp white ceiling. The elements work together adding character to the space while the white brightens the room and the silver gives a little shine and creates an overall soothing appeal.

Head up the stairs to the well-equipped, minimalist laundry room. This room proves that the home’s most common multifunctional space can be nice-looking, contemporary, functional and well organized. There’s plenty of crisp white cabinetry offering very important storage for detergent, clothespins and other laundry essentials, which is essential in any home. The top level also offers two additional guest rooms and a generous second living area that opens to an upstairs porch. Carol chose to kick the traditional Americana up a bit and decorate the first room red, white and blue since they always have guests for the 4th. Twin handmade Jenny Lind beds, heirlooms from Wink’s mother’s family, tastefully anchor the room and are updated with solid navy bed linens, delicate white bed skirts, nautical themed pillows and other Americana novelties. The well-tailored appearance lives up to the distinction of the treasured pieces and navy blue pairs well with the white walls making it a wonderful choice for a gender-neutral space. The second guest room is coined the Caribbean room, a place the couple enjoys and as it turns out, the couple just returned from a trip to San Marten. Wink once had a condo there and this room pays homage to a place that the couple loves. Bits of the Caribbean are woven into the room with the framed island prints, brightly colored linens, and outsized floral elements. A simple striped pillow on an oversized rocker and the large bold floral pattern of the linens add a whimsical touch to an otherwise tailored space giving it a timeless feel. Both guest rooms provide the ultimate atmosphere for peaceful snoozing by pairing the crisp sugar-white walls as a backdrop to bold statements of color.

The hallway is adorned with Southport themed art that has sentimental importance to the couple and each piece tells its own story. There is a print of Whittlers Bench and of the Yacht Basin before construction that dates back to the early 1940s or 50s, both of which were recently lent to Oliver’s Restaurant for historical and local decorating references. Another painting, done by a local artist, is a portrait of the Old American Fish Company, where the couple met in 2008. Phil was there with his dog, Indy, and Carol was there to watch the sunset… as she often did. So, this was the perfect gift, from her to him, after the couple married in 2012. A second story living area, currently used as a casual office/den, is the perfect spot for Carol to practice her yoga with a drop-dead view. Track lighting sheds light on a simple elegant desk and a cozy sitting area with a set of oversized occasional chairs. The chairs are outfitted with leather accents and printed pillows adding interest without being too bold against the clean walls and creating a relaxing canvas for this modern space. Guests will feel comfortable and welcome here in this space, kids will be at ease enough to play and it feels stylish

enough for a couple to use the room as a peaceful haven for two. It’s a light-filled and low-maintenance room embracing the crisp lines of the simple, sleek windows making for a perfect rainy Sunday at home. Shut the doors when you need protection from the elements yet it seems you can still hear the sound of the flowing Cape Fear River - even when the windows and doors are closed. When the doors are open to the second story deck, the private view very nearly enters and becomes part of the room. The woodwork of the deck provides a comforting sense of enclosure and a little extra shade as the double paneled doors ease the transition from an inside casual gathering to an alfresco setting. Every day, dolphins and herons frolic and hunt through the nearby marsh, making the view the true accessory of this outdoor room. Carol adds, “We just sit on the back porch and watch for hours.” This second-floor porch has an added sense of privacy, with its railings and overhanging eaves. A mix of dark woven furniture and colorful elements creates a casual seating area with cushions of aqua, vibrant green, and stripes, never be afraid of a little vibrant color. The look of an old beach cottage creates the perfect place

the perfect place to unwind on a warm summer night. Carol has created the space flawlessly with details…textured plants sit along side patterned cushion fabrics, rustic accents and strategically placed candles, adding just enough softness against heavy chairs and overhead lighting. A coastal and traditional blue ceiling adds just a little more drama than the usual white but also proves to be functional

since blue is said to repel wasps. This is key since wasps, mosquitoes, no-see-ums and the beach go hand in hand. The height of this porch, along with the accompanying breeze, however, keeps the pests away so, family and guests can dine and revel in the outdoors without things getting too buggy. The windows and doors can be thrown open, and the breeze and people can flow in and out…all summer long.

What an idyllic, inviting spot to escape the coastal heat, a heavy wind, a passing rainstorm or just unwind on a warm summer night. The views are quiet, private and relaxing, making for an ideal spot to watch a rainstorm rush by with an exotic beat playing from the overhead sound system. Just let the rhythmic sounds of the water and wind lull you, liven-up your senses and appease your spirit. Ahhhh! If the view and location of this home isn’t enough, the separate mother-in-law quarters with a nearby elevator seals the deal for me. This separate living space is a completely handicap accessible apartment fit with 32” wide doorways, sturdy hand bars by the toilet and in the open shower to ensure that an aging resident can safely and securely maneuver around as needed. The open and full kitchen features a single lever faucet for simplicity. It can be raised up to turn on, pushed down to turn off and moved right or left to control the temperature. Large enough to tastefully furnish with a comfortable eating/sitting area and a full bed while still allowing for plenty of room to roam and spend time. The living area is tastefully appointed with pretty cloisonné art and colorful textures while the kitchen and bath remain a clean, crisp white allowing for personal touches to be applied with art and accessories. The view is over the back of the house with a garden viewpoint and its own deck protected and shadowed by a canopy of trees. This viewpoint is perfect for bird watching…we even had an up close and personal look at a robin’s nest while mom was out hunting for provisions. Wink adds, “Everyone wants to live here.” Well, I could and I offered.

Skin Cancer Review As easy as A-B-C

BY: LESLIE RESCHLY BSN, RN

E

veryone loves that golden bronze tan! Have you looked around our community recently? See that RED BURN with white swimsuit strap marks? Welcome to summer, as locals and tourists hit the beach for extended periods and suffer the consequences.

Believe me, I am a sun worshipper with age spots to prove it! If you grew up in my generation, chances are you laid on aluminum foil in your backyard smothered in iodine-infused baby oil. Shudder at the thought! We have come to find out that sun worship leads to some horrible health concerns. According to the American Cancer Society website, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the USA. There are essentially 3 basic types of skin cancer, which arise from the cell types for which they are named. Basal Cell Skin cancer is the

most common beginning in basal cells of the skin. Almost 1 million new cases are diagnosed each year. This type of cancer is most frequently treated by removal of the area and surrounding tissue. Squamous cell cancer develops in the cells of the outer skin layers and is the second most common type of skin cancer encompassing approx. 20% of all cases. It is also treated with removal. Malignant Melanoma is the most serious and most fatal of skin cancers. Malignant melanoma begins in the melanocytes, which are the cells that color

the skin by producing melanin and make moles. Melanoma receives the most attention because it can kill you! It has a tendency to spread to lymph nodes and distant organs eventually showing up in the brain for example. Recognized early, malignant melanoma has a high cure rate. Depth of the cancer lesion, presence of ulceration and involvement of lymph nodes increases your chances of a poor outcome - essentially, the thicker the melanoma lesion, the worse your prognosis. It is anticipated that 2850 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed in 2016 in NC!

You may have seen warning signs for abnormal moles but for the sake of familiarity, lets review. t’s as easy as A-B-C. Consider these items when looking at your body. A-Asymmetry. One side does not look like the other. It is not a round circle. B-Border irregularity. Think jigsaw puzzle piece C-Color change or multicolored especially if dark black or blue D-Diameter of greater than 6 mm (pencil eraser) E-Evolving. The mole or skin area changes over time including open sore, does not heal, bleeds. Anyone reading this article knows the importance of sunscreen and sun avoidance. I would like to encourage you to seek annual medical evaluation of your skin so that changes can be detected early. In addition, if you notice something on yourself, your partner or your friend that meets the above criteria, SAY SOMETHING! Get a thorough skin check by a dermatologist or your medical professional. Survival depends on early discovery and treatment! Be Safe and Be Healthy! 1

SHOWCASE Three Cheers for the Red, White and Blue!

The Sea Notes Celebrate our independence BY: JEFFERY STITES

T

he Sea Notes Choral Society has been helping Southport with its official North Carolina Fourth of July celebrations since 1974. This year’s shows, Saturday, June 25 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, June 26 at 3:00 pm at the Odell Williamson Auditorium on the campus of Brunswick Community College, will open the Sea Notes 42nd year as an organization. And they are in the hands of a relative newcomer to both Southport and the Sea Notes. Lois Moore moved to Southport after retiring two years ago. After a 33-year career as a music educator and musician in and around Niagara Falls, New York, it wasn’t long before Moore was back in the business in her new home town. She joined Sea Notes as a soprano singer in September of last year and in April Moore accepted the position of Director of Worship and Music Arts at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in Southport. It was around that time she was also asked to direct this year’s Sea Notes Patriotic Concert. “Lois’ experience as a college music/ voice professor has been most evident as she carefully prepares us for a rather unique show. It will be a choral presentation but with a lot of nuances,” said Sea Notes President Jim Nelson. “We’re hoping for a full house both Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.”

Moore has based her musical selections upon the fact that people have come to Coastal Carolina from all over. She says her song choices highlight this, will the chorus summing it up with Johnny Cash’s “I’ve Been Everywhere.” The show will feature influences from many locals and styles. “The American Patriot concert has a little bit of blues, a little bit of jazz, songs from the Great American Songbook, and a healthy dose of flag waving patriotic tunes,” Moore explained. “It’s a musical journey across the United States with stops in Chicago, Kansas City and New Orleans. It features songs about specific states, the Mississippi River, and the railroads that crossed the country. There are songs of North Carolina and the surrounding area featuring our guest soloist Rodney Axsom.” Axsom is a local real estate broker and member of Coastal Carolina Produc-

It moves fast and provides a lot of entertainment in a little bit of time. The show features chorus, small groups, and soloists, even an

Elvis Presley impersonator. It is accompanied by a small band, much like a ‘pit orchestra’ accompanying a Broadway show and features songs with trumpet and fiddle,” Moore said. While she said she hopes the concert helps get everyone in the mood for Southport’s famous Fourth of July celebration, Moore said the show is extra special to her as she is the mother of eighteen-year-old, PFC Madison James Hall, United States Marine Corp stationed in Camp LeJeune, NC. Admission to Sea Notes concerts is free of charge but donations are gladly accepted both at the performances as through sponsorships. “We have a very large group of supporters, ‘Friends of Sea Notes’, who contribute significantly to our cause, said Nelson. “They are always listed in our programs and they obtain passes for preferential seating at the concerts. We would be in deep trouble without them.” 1

SHOWCASE

Stop Kiss

Breaking new ground for BLT STORY AND PHOTOS BY JEFFREY STITES

B

eth Strickland isn’t playing it safe with her choice of Stop Kiss for her directorial debut. She admits the show, centering around two women, Callie (Cat Thomas) and Sara (Brandi Simmons), who’s first kiss on a New York street leads to a brutal assault that leaves Sara in a coma, is a bit out of the box for Brunswick Little Theatre. The show is non-linear, with scenes exploring both the women’s blossoming relationship before the attack (which is not portrayed on stage) and the efforts to nurse Sara back health afterwards. “I know this isn’t the type of show BLT normally does, and taking risks like that can be scary but the fact I’m being trusted with this endeavor is amazing,” Strickland said. While Strickland is new to the director’s chair, she is far from new to theatre. That trust she mentions has been earned over years of involvement with BLT, particularly its Youth Division, Stagestruck Players. Strickland has been a part of Stagestruck since its beginnings in 2002, acting from sixth grade all the way through high school and moving onto other roles once she graduated and began college. “I would come home during breaks and go to Stagestruck auditions and rehearsals since most of my friends were still involved in it and would take notes for (Stagestruck founder and director Debbie) Skillman. But part of Stagestruck was to learn every aspect of theater. We played theater games to learn improv and how to create stage pictures, we would all collaborate on choreography, and we all pitched in when it came to props and costumes and sets. So it was a very natural transition to go from that to helping Skillman when I could during the summers, to being the assistant director, assistant to the choreographer,

Beth Strickland, Director

and stage manager starting with Dorothy Meets Alice in 2012,” said Strickland. “And I haven’t really stopped since.” Debbie Skillman and Strickland go way back. “I have known her since she came into this world,” said Skillman. “Her grandmother sang in my church choir and I played for her baptism. I taught her in elementary school and she appeared in musicals I produced there. She also attended a summer creative arts camp I held for several summers called KidzArts. Once she finished college and returned to the area I encouraged her to get involved with the

theater again and asked her to be my assistant director. She has served in that capacity for Dorothy Meets Alice, Dear Edwina, Godspell, and Thoroughly Modern Millie.” As far as confidence in Strickland’s abilities, Skillman leaves no question. “She is organized, creative, and a great note taker. The kids love her and I love her. She is calm under pressure, does not get flustered, has high expectations and works hard. She is pleasant, smart, happy, and a team player; consistent and highly dependable,” she said. For her part, Strickland said Skillman and Stagestruck Players prepared her to move into directing. “I don’t know if I have to words to describe the depth of the impact Skillman has had on my life and what I have learned from Stagestruck. She has challenged me and pushed me to be better than I thought I could be- both as a performer and as a person- without making me feel as if I wasn’t good enough to start with,” she said. “And Stagestruck! Theater people always talk about theater being a refuge, a place for the outcasts to find each other. But Stagestruck is more like a sacred space. Being a young person and feeling like you don’t belong is such a debilitating feeling but Stagestruck provides that belonging. And to be able to give back to that as an adult has helped give my life meaning.” Strickland hopes her audiences can find some meaning in the story she is bringing to stage as well. “Everybody has wondered what they wanted at some point. Everybody has loved somebody unexpected. Everybody has fought to get something they wanted at least once. Everybody has been scared of losing somebody they love,” she said, adding that the fact the lead characters are in a lesbian relationship shouldn’t make the story less relevant. “I don’t want people to think it is only a show for LGBT people. I hope audiences can see that LGBT stories are universal stories. I hope audiences are moved in some way.” Strickland first saw Stop Kiss as a senior at Appalachian State University. “It struck

a chord with me. I think it was because I could relate to the main characters so well. I was facing the end of my college career and I only had a vague idea of what I wanted and absolutely no idea how to get it. So I admired the bravery of the some of the characters who knew what they wanted and how to get it. Almost six years later I could still remember the way the show made me feel and to me that is good theatre,” she said. “I like doing good theatre.” Good theatre requires more than a director, though, and Strickland said she has the help of a talented cast. “So far, this cast is amazing. Everybody seems to know their characters inside and out and this is such a character driven show. And since we are a small cast we can really kind of collaborate and get people talking about how their characters relate to each other and what would feel more natural for them in terms of movement and reactions,” she said. “It’s great because, so far, I’m more of a facilitator than a director. Which as an actor is something I appreciate so I’m incredibly lucky to have a cast where I can be that type of director as opposed to somebody who has to plan every little movement, because the things they come up with are great and things I wouldn’t have thought of.” With all the pieces in place, Strickland said she has the makings of a successful show. “The content of the show is probably the riskiest thing and convincing people to come see any show is a continuous challenge for community theater. But BLT has so many great supporters and I’ve had tons of people tell me how excited they are to see my directorial debut, so I’m not even all that worried about either of those things,” she said. “I hope I can positively impact this community by doing something I love.” Stop Kiss will be performed June 17-19 and 24-26, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm with Sunday matinees at 3:00 pm, at the Brunswick Little Theatre, 8068 River Road SE, Southport. Tickets are available at Ricky Evans Gallery in Southport and online at www. brunswicklittletheatre.com. 1

Raise a Glass to Uncorked!

new friends at Uncorked. The reason she comes back is not only the great wine, but because of the friendly atmosphere and the socialization. “We have two levels of wine clubs - Everyday and Cellar. Our wine clubs give you the opportunity to try new wines at a great value.” - Gina

Fine wine, great beer, beautiful art…and more

SUPPORTING LOCAL ARTISTS TOO!

BY: AMI BROWN

W

hen you enter Uncorked by the Sea, you are greeted with an impressive selection of wines, beer and some incredible art. You can’t help but feel the warm, relaxed atmosphere and friendly hosts. Located at 602 North Howe Street, it’s easy to find, park and they even offer outside seating in the shade for those perfect summer days. Jim and Gina Poppe, Rhonda Till and Paul Wasserman met at Uncorked by the Sea during a wine tasting event back in 2012… they became friends and decided to join forces. The rest they say is history… and now they are the proud owners of this thriving wine business. Uncorked is a quaint wine shop, gourmet and craft beer house and fine art gallery supporting local artists. They also have some of the cutest hand crafted specialty gifts I’ve seen in Southport – all with a bit of a wine flair. If you are looking for a unique gift for a wine lover – this is definitely the place to go.

WINE SELECTION TO DIE FOR!

Uncorked offers a great selection of wine ranging from quality everyday wine to highly allocated wines. From domestic to imports, there is something for everyone to enjoy. I asked each owner for their favorites and recommendations, so you have it from the best. Paul recommends the Regusci Cabernet Sauvignon. Jim is a Zinfandel wine lover and his favorite is a blend from Paso Robles while Gina’s favorite includes a Penner-Ash Viognier.

A PASSION FOR WINE!

Paul’s passion for wine was completely accidental. While he was living in Washing DC back in the 70’s, he needed a job to pay the rent. He landed a job selling wine and was having so much fun, he never wanted to get a “real job” again. Whereas Jim

was working at Trader Joe’s bringing home the “wine of the week” to taste. Before they knew it Gina and Jim were taking trips to Napa Valley and Sonoma Wine Country and loving every minute of it. Rhonda enjoyed choosing new wines together with her fiancée at dinner and it became her passion as well.

HAND SELECTED CRAFT BEER!

You’ll never run out of choices with the extensive selection of unique craft beers. They are focussing more on North Carolina beers and also hand selecting new labels as they become available. With new beer coming out every week, this place stays on top of all the trends and offers a mix and match beer option – with no up charge. This is a great way to select your “6-pack” and explore a variety of tastes. They also have a nice selection of craft beer in cans perfect for the summer beach parties.

WINE TASTINGS!

Every Thursday evening from five to seven, Uncorked hosts a wine tasting event. For a $5 donation, you can enjoy an evening full of wine, get to know your neighbors and support a local charity. You get to taste 5 hand selected wines for the evening and then have a second round of your favorite. This is also a great way to step out of your comfort zone, and taste wine that you may not normally buy or even consider. The June charity is Step up for Soldiers, providing local veterans with things they need.) A typical wine tasting evening brings between 25-65 people! Some locals have discovered this little gem and return week after week. I had a chat with several of the “tasters” and they all come back for the great atmosphere and the conversation. Sheryl Burnett recently moved here from Winston Salem and she has met several

These people have thought of everything. The walls are adorned with incredible art, 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional. Three times a year they hand select three local artists to feature in the gallery. They have an opening night at the beginning of each show. “There are so many talented artists in the area. We are happy to be able to show their artwork in our gallery”, Gina adds. Uncorked is more than just a wine shop, it’s a lovely atmosphere, friendly people with a genuine love of wine and beer with a sense of community spirit. Southport is lucky to have such a great group of folks that continue to support others while letting us all enjoy life (and great wine) a little bit more.
