CURRENTS bought the Olds. Collecting that special old classic or jazzing up a newer model is a hobby for some, Boden said. For some members, they remember a car from decades ago they they used to drive, or that they always loved and wanted to own. Approximately 5,000 people attend the car show annually, which serves as a fundraiser for the group to support local charities. Over the years, the Cruisers club has donated to the Brunswick County Toy Run, Warrior Ride, the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Pink Ribbon Project, Providence Home, EAA CHapter 939 and the Lions Club. “This May show has been our bread and butter for years,” Boden said. Last year, the non-profit group gave $6,100 just to to the toy run. The show has grown, Boden said, and the members hear lots of positive feedback from attendees. A Mount Airy resident who attended last year recently called to find out how to enter his car in this year’s fall show, coming up in October. So what’s at stake? Shiny trophies to go with shiny cars, and of course, some serious bragging rights. Trophies are sponsored by local businesses, and are awarded
to the best of a particular brand (Chevrolet, Ford, etc.), and also for best paint and best street ride. The best Camaro and best Mustang will be recognized, as will the best import and the best truck. The best in show trophy also comes with a cash prize. There will also be door prizes, a 50/50 drawing, and the Southport Police Department will raffle off a bicycle and a child car seat. For more information, call (910) 477-3785 or visit www.capefearcruisers.com. Shop by the Waterfront (Southport)... MARKETS! Make sure to put the Southport Waterfront Market on your list of must-dos this summer. Whether you’re just visiting and need a thank-you gift for your favorite pet
PHOTO COURTESY DSI sitter, or you’re a local looking for some fresh produce and a new table centerpiece for your next dinner party, you can probably find it at the Farmers Market. Vendors set up on the lawn of Ft. Johnston Garrison House, so shoppers have a beautiful backdrop of history and the waterfront as they browse the various items offered for sale. Everything must be handmade, and organizers try to keep a balance of the goods offered so there is a variety for customers. The Market runs on Wednesdays, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. , May 2 through August 28. The Market will not be open July 4th, however. Karen Rife, Marketing Chairperson for Downtown Southport Inc., said that the Market usually includes 65-70 vendors. Downtown Southport Inc. is a volunteer organization dedicated to promoting events and business in Southport.
“We all love Southport so much that we want everyone to love it as much as we do,” Rife said. Rife said that visitors to the Market love the location, and they love the choices they have, from inexpensive trinkets to high-end items. “They like that it’s a small, quaint town, that they can get around town, that there are a lot of different vendors,” she said. Customers definitely come back year after year, she said, and they also shop at the markets at Oak Island and even Sunset Beach. “They do a little hop skippity from market to market,” she said. And once they finish shopping at the Waterfront Market, Rife said visitors are encouraged to explore more of Southport. “It’s beautiful and they can walk to the local restaurants. We encourage them to not just to enjoy the market but to also enjoy this beautiful, historic town.” she said.

Oak Island Parks and Recreation Director Rebecca Squires said that visitors to the Farmers Market really enjoy the shopping venue. “The smell of the salt air, the sound of the waves crashing, and seagull cries overhead add that extra ambiance to the market that you can’t get anywhere else,”
Squires said. There is plenty of parking available across Dolphin Drive, in the cabanas parking lot. The Market includes many Oak Island vendors, but also some seasonal and part-time ones as well. “Regular patrons see fresh produce just in season, or new and unique crafts each week,” Squires said. the club hopes to have another occurrence in the future. This event will be located at 16th Street SE beach access on Oak Island, from 8 am until 1 pm. They hope that any child that wants to learn can make it to this super fun, summertime event. About the Club The club was established at South Brunswick High School, fall of 2017, and

CURRENTS is a local branch of South Carolina’s Surf Dreams Foundation. Sophia Ordonez is the president of the club and is currently a Freshman attending South Brunswick High School. Ordonez started the club with the help of the Surf Dreams Foundation and SBHS’ social worker, Jennifer Ordonez. Sophia Ordonez decided to start this community-based club because her and her family have always enjoyed surfing and she thought it would be an enjoyable club for anyone at the school that loves the ocean and beneficial to the safety of the community. The members of the club want to make it possible for every kid in the area to have the opportunity to learn how to surf and to help as many people as possible to understand how to be safe and have fun at the beach. The club wishes to grow and be able to help other students become educated about ocean safety and the art of surfing. The fairly new club has hosted many community-based fundraisers for the Surf Dreams Foundation since their start last fall. The Surf Dreams Foundation is a 501c3 out of South Carolina and is the originator of the club’s aspirations. Their main goals are; fundraising for Surf Dreams Foundation to provide equipment to those who cannot afford them, the “Take A Kid Surfing Day” event, and safety seminars for children from 3rd grade until 5th. The SBHS Surf Dreams Club welcomes any student at South Brunswick High School that loves the ocean and is interested in joining this fun and educational surf club that is focused on community service. Student Involvement
Many students are involved with the club and its many activities in the community. Noah Sheldon is currently working on his senior project with the help of the Surf Dreams Club. Sheldon will be performing a presentation as his product on ocean and beach safety to the 5th graders at Southport Elementary and Bolivia Elementary. He will be teaching them how to enjoy the beach while also being safe. Sophia Ordonez’ brother, Mathew will also be working with Noah on his project for his similar senior project next year. Fundraisers are abundant in this club, they has previously carried out a T-shirt design contest for the prize of a hoodie and gift certificate and another contest to win a surfboard. The club also provided water for the competitors in the recent Oak Island Run. All of their events have had great effort put forth by many students and community members . Hopes for the Future The SBHS Surf Dreams Club hopes to acquire a great community turnout on May 12 for the Surf Day to hopefully one day have an event annually. The foundation has at least five every year and that is something the club is going to be working towards as the club grows. In the future, the club hopes to implement some type of annual ocean safety lesson or permanent ocean safety curriculum at the elementary schools to ensure the safety of our young ones. The Surf Dreams Club would really appreciate any member that loves the ocean and is willing to improve the safety of our community.

What began in 1981 as a small waterfront gathering, the now ‘World Famous’ Blue Crab Festival has grown into a premier event that draws visitors from all over the Country. When the Blue Crab Festival began, its main goal was to bring visitors to the historic waterfront in support of the local restaurants, businesses, accommodations and entire community as a whole. A few vendors, eager to be a part of the new event, set up under the mossy strewn live oak trees… and a festival was born. Later, music and entertainment, a bevy of food displaying the areas traditional seafood specialties and unique arts & crafts were added… and here we are, more than thirty years later. This year’s festival organizers expect over 50,000 people to attend our fun filled, two day festivities. The Festival’s success is mirrored by Little River’s incessant growth … as one has definitely influenced the other … and continues to do so. A dedicated and hard working Committee, consisting of Waterfront and community business owners, local residents and festival/event specialists, have come together to expand the festival and make sure the celebration reflects the Festival’s proud origin. In addition to the fabulous 2 day Festival, the event has an annual Beauty Pageant that boasts over 50 contestants and we previously held an annual 5-K run held along the beautiful the waterfront. All of these events were designed to expand the festival audience and create a family fun event, exposing the many assets of the Little River community and surrounding areas to its residents and visitors. Additionally, the Festival brings the community together, working as one, to enhance and support each other in a common goal of individual pride and success. By exposing

members of the community to the Festival and its unique goals, thankfully, the volunteer pool continues to grow… and business and organizations continue to increase their support and sponsorships. Everyone enjoys the weekend’s festivities, and locals and visitors alike attend this celebrated annual event, to experience the fun and tradition. The goal is certainly for folks to have a good time, and create many great memories to last them a lifetime, but the Festival Committee has an additional goal, too. The ‘World Famous’ Blue Crab Festival is unique, in that its purpose is to raise money to help support the community, local organizations and its residents. Leaders within the community have come together year after year and identified the needs of community projects and non-profit groups within the local area that the festival can possibly assist. By combining their resources, and being the dedicated civic minded committee they are, they want to be involved and do all they can to make a difference. ART BEAT Tattoos Rock!
Alley Cat Joe creates works of art STORY & PHOTOS BY CARLA EDSTROM
I
really do have a lot to reflect on and be thankful for this year. We often take for granted the gift of living a long life as youth is always so treasured in our culture. I was born in 1968, to celebrate my milestone birthday and my life journey thus far, I decided to get a tattoo.
It may seem cliché to some, but as a lifelong artist and vocalist, it feels like a natural thing for me. I have spent years thinking about it and searching for the right picture. Most of my childhood was spent outside catching bugs, searching for treasures and chasing dandelion seeds in the wind. I have very fond childhood memories, so getting a tattoo to represent that part of my life was my perfect choice. So after I figured out my tat, I had to find the right artist. After all this is a going to be on my body forever and I want it to be perfect. Brunswick County Tattoo artist Kevin J. Fashouer, Jr. aka Alley Cat Joe, knows that getting a tattoo is personal and a forever commitment. Owner of Alley Cat Joe’s
Tattoos are a lifetime thing and shouldn’t be taken as lightly as they are these days. Tattoo Studio in Supply, Fashouer encourages everyone to put a lot of thought into the design before they schedule that appointment. “I’m very big on thinking out your tattoos and I push that to everyone,” he said. “Tattoos are a lifetime thing and shouldn’t be taken as lightly as they are these days. We want you to know what YOU want, not just something the stranger you just met at the tattoo shop pushed you into for a quick buck,” he said. “Always look at an artist portfolio to see if they do the style you like, and make sure their reviews are good to match the work,” said Fashouer. “You also want to look at their recent work to make sure the quality offered is consistent,” he said. “If they don’t clean the lobby you can bet the same approach is taken with the tattoo room/ process.” Fashouer said that he uses disposable tools like tubes, needles and ink caps at his studio and equipment and work area is cleaned daily with a medical grade disinfectant. Being a professional tattoo artist for 4 years now, he and his wife Rachel run their Supply studio. Fashouer’s skills were largely self-taught, so being a very creative person who loves to draw, learning the tattoo craft came naturally to him. “I tattooed
Alley Cat Joe (Kevin Fashouer) tattoos a client friends and family from 2010-2013 when I got a job at a shop. It wasn’t the greatest, but it was my in,” he explained. “I worked there for a year and a half before going to Florida and working at (a studio) where I really grew as an artist,” he said. His advice for aspiring tattoo artists is to try to work under someone as an apprenticeship. “Get a collection of drawings together showing your strengths and weaknesses and go to the shop and ask if they would be interested in working with you,” he advised. Fashouer’s artistic talent is obvious in the pictures of his drawings and tattoo work he has displayed on the walls of his studio and on his Facebook page. He was very knowledgeable about how my tattoo would hold up over time and he explained every step in detail. Since I got mine, many friends asked if it was painful and honestly I felt no pain on my forearm. It just felt like scratching. I followed all the aftercare directions I was given to a T, and mine healed up perfectly. And now I have this perfect little piece of art that reminds me that even while life is fragile and unpredictable, I should always live with the heart of a child chasing dandelions in the wind. Fashouer lives in Supply with his wife Rachel and their children. HISTORY Historic Celebration St. Philip’s Episcopal Church turns 250! STORY BY KASS FINCHER
I
f you make a practice of walking the quiet streets of Southport, most days on the hour you will hear the carillon of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church bring the melodies of familiar hymns to our community. Walking past the church on Moore Street, one can also observe the labyrinth, made with bricks donated by members of the church, where a sense of calm can center your spirit on a busy day.
This month the church is celebrating its 250th anniversary, a testament to its staying power through many years of much change. In fact, today the Chapel of the Cross displays the seven different political flags under which parishioners have worshiped – England, Spain, Grand Union, North Carolina, Betsy Ross, the Confederate States of America and the United States of America. Tommy Harrelson, who is spearheading the 250th anniversary celebration, describes some of the plans they are making for the weekend of May 18-20. “Our church, like most of the Episcopal churches in this area, started in Brunswick Town,” he says. “On Friday evening, May 18, we’re going to have a simple service at the ruins in Brunswick Town, sharing some of the history there, with a reception afterward. The next day, Saturday, we will have a service at
...on May 18, we’re going to have a simple service at the ruins in Brunswick Town, sharing some of the history there, with a reception afterward. the Chapel of the Cross here in Southport. Both services will go back in time to celebrate previous worship traditions. Chuck Pollock, our church historian, who is very knowledgeable about the history of the church, and Jim McKee (head of Brunswick Town) will speak at each event. On Sunday, we’ll have one combined service
in the sanctuary here in Southport at 10:30 a.m. with music, and afterwards we’ll enjoy a barbecue picnic on the grounds. We’re just hoping for good weather!” St. Philip’s website shares more about the history of the church. The original parish was built in 1741 in Brunswick Town. When Spanish privateers attacked and captured the Port of Brunswick, the parish was held for several days. In 1760, as a new church was being constructed, Royal Governor Arthur Dobbs designated St. Philip’s Church as His Majesty’s Chapel in North Carolina. It was completed in 1768 and served Brunswick Town until it was burned by the British in 1776 during the Revolutionary War. Honoring the first church, part
of the original building still stands in Brunswick Town. Despite its burning, the church relocated to Southport and continued to thrive. According to local research, Fort Johnston’s commander – Colonel Thomas Childs – wanted a church to serve the fort and used his soldiers to build it, right across the street. That first church building here in Southport was erected in 1843. When Confederate forces evacuated Fort Johnson in 1865, the church was seized and occupied by Union forces. They used it as a hospital for their wounded, and later as a school for African-American children. In the late 1870s, the troops at Fort Johnston helped in acquiring a new communion table, alms basin, lectern and organ for the church. The church prospered over the years, and in 2003 they began construction on the current St. Philip’s Episcopal Church building, which the congregation enjoys today. The old building was renamed “Chapel of the Cross at St. Philip’s” in honor of its original name in Brunswick Town. Today the thriving church has over 500 members, and offers outreach programs ranging from mission funds to a diaper ministry. Lorraine Beamer, administrator for the church, describes some of them. “We tend to stay very local,” she says. “We’re involved in Street Reach, an amazing organization. We participate in a winter outreach here in town, where the churches get together, pick a week and provide a hotel and food for anyone who needs somewhere warm to stay. We also go every Monday to Carillon Homes, where we offer a nice meal and chat for anyone who wants to come.” With the help of several volunteers, Beamer’s busy jack-of-all-trades position

HISTORY has her doing all kinds of support services – the website, email, bulletins, membership and contribution records and schedules for the priests – Canon James Hanisian and Father T.J. Tetzlaff. Coming from Kentucky, Father Tetzlaff and his wife (also a priest, in Wilmington) arrived less than a year ago. He appreciates the fact that many in his congregation have great life experiences and wish to give something back through community service. He also knows that many interested visitors to the church come from backgrounds different from the Episcopal Church, so one of his primary focuses is teaching newcomers’ classes. He also speaks about the role of the church in reaching out beyond the membership. “The homeless ministry is close to my heart,” he relates. “In fact, the Chapel doors are always open; occasionally we find people sleeping there because they have nowhere else to go. We try to help them find the services they need.” As for the Sunday worship services, two options offer different experiences for the
congregation. The 8:00 a.m. service is traditional, without music. The 10:30 a.m. service offers music and what Beamer calls “a fabulous choir who will give you goosebumps.” She emphasizes that the church wants everyone to feel welcome and to experience the peace and community within. It’s a testament to the resolve of St. Philip’s people that, despite a long history of attacks and capture, this church has found a way to overcome those who tried to shut it down. Today St. Philip’s Episcopal opens its doors to all, inviting us to join them in worship and ministries in our community.

SAVOR Doc Meridian Winery Wine Bar & Wine Garden really hits the spot! STORY BY KASS FINCHER
W
hat began as a part-time hobby turned into a full-time venture for Heather and Brent Thompson of Doc Meridian Winery in Southport. Brent began making wine and beer ten years ago, and Heather says they would invite friends over to try them. His Malbec was her favorite. Originally from Arkansas, the Thompsons moved to Southport just last year and opened the wine shop in August. Heather describes their decision to move here. “We had been vacationing here for years with our kids at Oak Island and Caswell Beach,” she says. “We would take the kids to Fort Fisher and the aquarium, and of course we had to go to Britt’s Donuts. Four years ago my husband did some work over in Wilmington, so we lived at Carolina Beach in a condo for a few months. We just love the area, so when the children grew up we de-
cided to make the move. We love Southport.” She goes on to describe their approach at the wine shop. “We wanted to have wines that you couldn’t find at local grocery stores,” she relates. “I’m really pleased with our wine selection. We have probably 55 different wines to choose from, ranging from $8.99 to $159.99, with most in the $10-$20 range. We only work with one distributor – Paragon Wine Group out of Raleigh – and we really like their portfolio.” Working with just one distributor en-
This is Dave (Dave voted for us to win the MAGGIES ... AND WE DID!)
OWNER HEATHER THOMPSON ables them to build an assortment of complementary and sometimes unusual selections. “We have the best canned wine you’ll ever find; it’s called Archer Roose. We’re the only winery from here to Raleigh that carries it – our distributor recommended them. The owners Marian Leitner and David Waldman make fabulous wine. Their rose’ is from France, their Cabernet
and others are from Chile. They’re expanding their lines, coming out with a Chardonnay and Prosecco soon.” The Archer Roose website describes the owners’ approach to winemaking. “We’ve always had an appreciation for boundary pushers, feather rufflers and unconventional explorers,” says owner Marian Leitner. “So Archer Roose is a manifestation

SAVOR of that. We named it after Edith Wharton’s Newland Archer and Teddy Roosevelt. It’s a contrast of sophistication (the Archer) and exploration (the Roose) that makes our wine perfect for fine dining or adventuring.” Heather goes on to describe the functionality of the boxed and canned wine. “We wanted to offer a house wine that’s a little different, so our boxed wine from Archer Roose is our house wine,” she says. “A couple who sails in the Bahamas each winter on a big sailboat stopped by and bought six boxes of wine for his boat. You don’t want glass on a boat; the cans are perfect, and they’re almost an 8-ounce pour. They’re great for the beach too, since they don’t like glass there either – we take a couple of cans out and watch the sun go down. And I’m getting in some beautiful purses that you can carry them in to take to the beach.” Other popular wines include the South African Noble Hill estate red blend of four grapes – Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. A uniquely named “Leda the Truffle Hunter” wine is in honor of the winemaker’s dog who hunts truffles. A very affordable “Bloom” – 90% Chenin Blanc and 10% Viognier – is also a popular choice. The Thompsons also love to support wineries that have a story to tell. For every bottle they sell of their Westerly Wines Sauvignon Blanc, the winery provides funding for fresh water in poor areas of the world. From Austria a winery that produces a Gruner Veltliner contributes funding to a medical unit in a little town near Tanzania
called Itete, where almost everyone has AIDS. Heather notes, “If I could have every wine that I offer have a story that helps somebody, that would be wonderful! You can enjoy the wine but also help charities.” The Thompsons have also teamed up with Lisa and Eric Stettner from the Cheese Shoppe just down the street. For their partnered events, the Cheese Shoppe provides the cheeses to pair with the wines for tastings; then the two businesses provide profits to a charity. Their first event ben-
efited the closet that Brunswick Schools has for homeless children. For their next charity, a little town in Cambodia where the children have no money for books was the beneficiary. The last event went toward funding an organization – Street Reach that houses homeless veterans and helps them assimilate back into society. Wine tastings are held every other Tuesday, from 6 to 8 p.m. If you’re interested in a private wine tasting, Doc Meridian can do that as well. Heather describes her approach to customers: “I wanted to offer what is important to me when walking into a shop. Quality wine, good prices, relaxed atmosphere, and greeting everyone who walks in. Every person who walks in is just as important as the last person who left. You want to make sure that everyone knows that they matter. I ask them, what are you looking for today, what do you like? I try to take their answer and fit the wine to what they like.” And Doc Meridian is in the process of putting an actual winery in Southport Village on Howe Street, in the pink building beside the general store. They will most likely obtain their grapes from California and Oregon vineyards. They are in the process of renovating the space, putting a bar and a retail store in the front and a winery in the back. The Thompsons’ business today began with an actual dream 26 years ago – the name Doc Meridian came to Brent one night while sleeping. That dream is now a reality and Southport residents will enjoy sharing in it.

BIZ Q&A
Strings & Beyond Strumming up lots of biz and buzz! STORY & PHOTOS BY KRIS BEASLEY
G
uitar anyone? Have you ever thought about taking up a musical instrument? Well Strings and Beyond have you covered if you ever do! Located in Southport, this thriving supplier will make your heart sing, and your guitars hum.
1 - You are located in Southport, but are most of your customers local? Our business is mostly eCommerce so we ship all over the US, but we do have a great local following. Having such a big online presence allows us to have a huge selection of products that are available to all of our walk-in customers, so it’s great to be able to provide our local musicians what they need in a convenient location. 2 - What kind of musical background do you have? Do you play the guitar? That’s always a funny question to answer because the answer is pretty much no. I have a guitar and I know how to string it and strum it, but I leave it up to the real musicians to play music that you’ll actually enjoy listening to. 3 - Are you from this area? if not... where? I’m originally from Charlotte and graduated from Virginia Tech, but my family always came here to vacation growing up, so this was a second home until I was fortunate enough to make it a permanent home. 4 - What is your number one selling item? For Acoustic guitar it’s definitely the Elixir Phosphor Bronze Light Gauge Strings and for Electric Guitar it’s the Ernie Ball
Regular Slinky Strings. 5 - What makes Strings and Beyond stand out from the crowd? We always say that we’re a mom and pop shop on the internet. We are a small, family-run company that treats our customers how we would like to be treated even though we’re shipping tons of orders a month. We hand write a personal message on every invoice and we always include a fun freebie in every order, whether that be a cool sticker or some free picks. And, we provide exceptional customer service. We have a great group of people who work really hard to ensure that customers are happy and keep coming back. 6 - Do you have any NEW products or Specials you’d like to tell us about? We have some awesome new coated Electric Strings from Elixir that last longer and are great for playing in humid environments like coastal areas. They’re called Optiweb strings so they feel cleaner, like an uncoated string, but you get the benefits of the coating so the crisp, natural tone lasts longer. 7 - What’s one myth about playing the guitar? That strings don’t need to be changed often. Of course it depends on how much you are playing and where you store your

instrument, but fresh strings = fresh tone. And, new strings really make a difference in your sound quality. We recommend changing strings every couple of months, unless you’re playing a lot of gigs and they should be changed every week. 8 - You carry a lot of brands of strings - what is the difference? The Holy Grail for every guitarist is finding the right string for their instrument and their playing style, and the right pick if they use one. The metal composition of the strings determines the tone, so strings can sound really mellow, or super bright, and they all come in different gauges just like shoe sizes. What’s great about a lot of our string manufacturers is that they’re here in the USA so they’re top quality, and some of them still use the same winding machines from generations before. Since there are hundreds of types of stringed instruments, we do our best to carry them all - from classical to bass, and sitar to ukulele, if you need strings on it then we probably stock them. And, all of the accessory items too like tuners, picks, straps and pickups. That’s the beyond part.
9 - Tell us a little about the history of Strings & Beyond. We started in Charlotte, in the upstairs of my parent’s house. It was mainly just a hobby, and we grew organically over time. We created the website in 2002 with just a couple of brands, right around the time that people were gaining trust in shopping online, and we found that guitarists are a quirky bunch that are pretty particular about what they need. So we slowly kept adding more products to our selection so that we could be more of a one-stop shop. Our goal was to provide musicians with a great selection of top quality products at affordable prices that can be delivered right to their doorstep, all while making it a fun and enjoyable shopping experience so that they’ll keep coming back and tell all of their friends about us. And word of mouth has been the best advertising for us since day one. In 2010, we were too big for the house so we moved to Southport because we love this area and we also wanted to make Strings and Beyond a great place to work. All we needed was a post office so the pretty seaside town was just a bonus.

FUN Questions: Who is your favorite musician? (and why) Can I be cheesy and say the guy with the guitar at the local bar? They’re out there doing what they love so that it can be enjoyable for us to relax and have a good time. I’ll drink to that! Who is the best guitar player of all time? Such a hard question. There are so many, but I got to see Joe Bonamassa perform live and I was blown away. Do you have a favorite local band? Sgt Rock! What’s number one on your bucket list? To keep my wife happy!

Comparing Coolers Wine Coolers are the perfect Summer Thirst Quenchers STORY BY JEFF STITES
I
was not quite old enough to drink when the first wine coolers hit the market, but I can remember the commercials clearly. The two old dudes, supposed to be Mr. Bartles and Mr. Jaymes, thanking you for your support. It even became a bit of a catch phrase for a while, not quite “where’s the beef” but close. The first wine coolers, such as Bartles and Jaymes, were actuallywine-based. They were a mass-produced version of thehomemade wine spritzer, wine with a little sprite or even justtonic water. But that proved to be a bit expensive and soon winecoolers were all malt beverages, basically beer without hops andwith all the cooler removed and much of artificial flavorings added. They were usually also colored in a variety of funkyhues, at least until Zima arrived. Zima led to Smirnoff Ice which led to Mike’s Hard Lemonadewhich has since turned into a vast collection of what the beerindustry calls FMBs, or Flavored Malt Beverages. Today wehave everything from the Seagrams wine coolers of old to hardgreen tea to alcoholic root beer. And our old friend Zima is evenreturning on a seasonal basis. So, with the spring season upon us, I thought I’d take a dive into the FMB segment and see what has become of the wine cooler. Smirnoff Cranberry Lime Spiked Sparkling Seltzer 4.5 % abv 90 calories 1g carbs This product contains no sugar, a fact my co-taster (and wife)would have appreciated some warning about. It isn’t sweet at all, nor is it meant to be. This product, and many other “spiked seltzers” like it, aim to appeal to the same demographic that drinks flavored seltzer waters. Just who these people are andtheir ways are both a mystery to me. This wasn’t a bad drink by any means, just very bland. I’m fine with not sweet, actually prefer that, but this didn’t have anything in it’s flavor profile to take the place of sweet. It was a bit limey, but I didn’t taste any real cranberry. Not to fear, though. After adding a glug or two of rum, this turned into a delightful beverage!
34 Southport Magazine / MAY 2018 / www.SouthportMag.com
If that’s your thing, you’ll like it. If not, you probably won’t. Also, though we don’t have any in the house, this would probably be excellent with vanilla vodka. Smirnoff Ice Smash Original Lemon+Lime 8% abv 377.6 calories 43.2g carbs First off, let me say they play fast and loose with the nutritional information. The fine print tells you that this one 16 oz cancontains 3.2 servings. So, if you want to enjoy one of these before it goes flat, you’ll need 2.2 of your friends to share it with. Or, you know, you could drink the entire can yourself. Which do you think is more likely? Also, I was forced to do math for the above calorie and carb numbers and I’m not happy about that. But how does it taste, you ask? Well, if you’ve ever hadSmirnoff Ice, it tastes much like that, but with the sort of high alcohol content aftertaste thing many malt liquors come with. It’s lemon limey and would be refreshing if it weren’t so sickly sweet. There is lots of carbonation and you’ll likely need a few Tums after enjoying one of these. Even if you only drink a third of the can. Mike’s Hard Black Cherry Lemonade 5% abv Rather than fudging the numbers on nutritional information with ridiculous serving sizes, Mike’s decided to simply not include any. It’s probably for the best. No one is drinking this stuff because they think it’s healthy, are they? Surprisingly, this stuff isn’t half bad. It’s not as sweet as I expected it to be and it has a strong cherry aroma and a decent bit of cherry taste. The carbonation isn’t overpowering, but it is pleasantly fizzy. I can see drinking this on the porch in the summer. It’s still too sweet for me to want more than one, but for those who want a malt beverage that isn’t beer, this would do nicely, I think.
Blitz-Weinhard Brewing Co. Henry’s Grape Hard Soda 4.% abv 222 calories 35.1g carbs Henry’s Grape Hard Soda contains sugar. It contains quite a bit of sugar, but somehow it comes off as much tart as sweet. It isn’t even as sweet as regular, non-alcoholic grape soda, really. I was surprised that I kind of liked this stuff. Of course, I am a huge fan of grape soda, probably as much out of childhood nostalgia as anything, but still I love me a grape soda. Henry’s tastes pretty much just like grape soda.
Smirnoff Ice Smash Screwdriver 8% abv 377.6 calories 43.2g carbs This could be dangerous. It has the same 8% alcohol as the Lemon+Lime version of Smash but lacks the high abv aftertaste. I think that fact owes to the strong orange-peach flavor as this is one very fruity drink. But again, this is surprisingly less sweet than I anticipated. It is sweet, don’t get me wrong, but it isn’t as sticky tasting as I remember wine coolers being. It’s more, as I said, fruity. And it’s actually kind of delicious. The kind of delicious that when combined with a relaxed summer evening could get one in trouble real fast 8% alcohol. It’s probably best to think of these more like a mixed drink than a beer. Or not. Hey, it’s summer after all.

KITCHEN Sweet, Red and Juicy Local Strawberries make their tasty debut STORY BY KRIS BEASLEY
O
ne of the best things about Springtime, besides the warmer weather is the availability of fresh, local produce. For me, May has always meant fresh, local strawberries. I can remember my mom cutting up the fresh berries and sprinkling them with sugar. So simple, yet so delicious! Once I got married, my mother-in-law, June Beasley introduced me to her homemade Strawberry Jam. One of my favorite photographs of all time, is of my daughter, Brooke about age 4, standing on a chair stirring the jam in June’s kitchen. And now that I am a grandmother, my granddaughter, Carter loves for us to make Strawberry Cakes. I found a recipe for the Best Strawberry Cake Ever and I have to say, it did not disappoint! Finally, last year, one of my best friends, Leslie had us over for dinner and made Strawberry Shortcake for dessert. It was incredible. I thought I would share some of my favorite Strawberry Recipes and provide some inspiration to visit your local farmer’s markets and get to cookin’! JUNE’S STRAWBERRY JAM 2 qts Fresh, local strawberries. 7 cups Sugar 1/2 tsp Butter or Margarine 1 box SURE-JELL Fruit Pectin Boil and prepare canning jars and lids. Let stand in hot water until ready to use. Drain well before filling. Rinse strawberries and discard stems. 1 cup at a time, crush strawberries to measure exactly 5 cups of crushed strawberries. Place in a 6 or 8 qt. sauce pot. Stir pectin into fruit in sauce pot. Add butter to reduce foaming. Bring mixture to full rolling boil (a boil that doesn’t stop bubbling when stirred) on high heat, stirring constantly. Stir in sugar. Return to a full rolling boil and boil exactly 1 min., stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Skim off any foam with metal spoon. Ladle immediately into prepared jars, filling to within 1/4 inch of tops. Wipe jar rims and threads. Cover with two-piece lids. Screw bands tightly. Place jars on elevated rack in canner. HOMESTYLE 312 Moore Street
This historic home sits in the perfect location for scenic water views and fun. STORY BY AMI BROWN
A
rare opportunity to own a piece of Southport’s rich heritage in the desirable Yacht Basin area! The Julius Weeks home, built circa 1896, is an architecturally significant part of the town’s history. Situated on one of the original, oversized ‘’100 lots’’, the location is irresistible, offering captivating views of the Cape Fear River and the Intracoastal waterway from the private porches, and the ease of walking to seaside restaurants, shops and the local marina. This substantial home has been tastefully updated in an historically correct manner. Gleaming heart pine floors abound and Southport ‘’bows’’ adorn the doors. The living room features an attractive, original 12 foot tin ceiling. The gourmet kitchen boasts upscale appliances and a large pantry. This property is for sale, but with this location, won’t last long.
With plenty of out door living this back porch looks like straight out of Southern Living. All you need is a glass of sweet tea or refreshing lemonade to make it complete.. oh and don’t forget your favorite Nicholas Sparks book to read!
The front porch offers year round views of the Cape Fear, the Yacht Basin and plenty of blue skies and sun shine. Only the tourists are seasonal here.

The high ceilings are accented with traditional ornate squares that mimic the 1800’s era. Every detail of restoration makes this home historically significant and unique.
The huge great room offers cozy nook space, light flooding in through the windows and doors, and ceiling fans to keep a gentle coastal breeze. Enough space for everyone to gather or everyone to have quiet time too. The perfect combination for every lifestyle.
Seafood
This space is nicely defined, living room, dining area, but still feel very open and airy. The hardwood floors shine and bring warmth and coziness to the decor and period feel.

Extra high ceilings and open floor plan are just a few of the highlights of this stylishly restored home. The wooden staircase is a masterpiece and shows incredible attention to detail. I love the way the spaces are clearly laid out, but remain open and free-form.
This light and bright kitchen has been completley remodeled and offers top of the line appliances and a huge pantry. The tall cabinets give you plenty of storage and tons of counter space for large families and entertaining friends.
Every room has been lovingly remodeled to the highest standard, keeping in mind the period and purpose of the space.
The dining space is huge, enough room for a grand piano if you wish. The floor plan is versatile and could be re-defined to meet the needs of your family, just think of all those visitors you’ll have.

Even the ceilings in the bedroom have impeccable wooden details. It’s like stepping back in time, with all the modern conveniences - the very best of both worlds. A huge master bedroom and master bath make this a real gem.
A little bit of history about this home... This home was built by Julius John Weeks in the 1890’s. Documents from the city of Southport show the second story was added to the home in 1896. Julius Weeks was the son of John Julius Weeks, business owner and fisherman. The lot the home sits on was parceled soon after the NC General Assembly incorporated the town of Southport in the 1700’s. Julius Weeks was also a local fisherman and father of several children He served as a soldier for the Confederacy in the US Civil War. Many of the Weeks’ family are buried in a large plot at the Smithville Burial ground located on East Moore Street. The home has been carefully maintained in its original condition. The new addition includes the kitchen, den, master bedroom and bath, as well as the garage and crofter. Contact Tina Powers for your private showing today.
