May has always been a big month for me. My birthday is near Memorial Day, so when I was a kid that usually meant a long weekend from school, backyard birthday parties, and neighborhood block parties! It was the start of warmer weather when neighbors would start coming out of their houses to work in their yards. The smell of fresh cut grass reminds me of that time. May is the month when pools open, classes end (for some) and all the flowers start blooming! Things are a little different now that I’m living in the south but the basic concept still remains. It is the start of summer and we need to get ready! Our center spread showcases all the local bands and where they will be playing throughout the summer. Pull it out to hang

on your fridge! If you are searching for a touch of nostalgia look no further than the Cape Fear Cruisers Car Show. Cars, of any age, have a great way of transporting us to the past. And speaking of the past, check out the FREE movie Something of Value, written by Robert Ruark and starring Rock Hudson (circa 1957), on Friday, May 13th. All part of Robert Ruark’s 100th birthday celebration. You can read more about Robert Ruark and get some great picnic recipes inside this issue. If you are looking for action, look no further than the Ride the Tide Kayak Race or learn how to fish with the Women Angler’s in Training course! Or check out our event calendar here or online. There is something for everyone. Also, there are features on two local businesses, Bianchi Brickyard and Loco Jo’s. Build your own patio or eat out on one! Getting to know the business owners in our town is a cool way to spend the summer! So whether you are young, old or in -between, get ready to put on the sun block or pack a picnic or drink a margarita or do all three because Summer is here and we’ve got you covered! Stay Cool!

ake a step back in time and see the best of what car manufacturers have been rolling out for the last 100 years at the Cape Fear Cruisers’ 11th Annual Car & Truck Show. The show is scheduled for Saturday, May 7, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Walmart Parking lot in Southport. Cape Fear Cruisers President Bill Vann said the show got its start 11 or so years ago when a group of car enthusiasts decided to formally do something together. According the Club’s website, www.capefearcruisers.com, the Club’s mission is to “develop and maintain good relationships within the community by offering assistance to local charitable organizations and individuals in need while enjoying the fellowship of other individuals with an interest in collecting, restoring, modifying and owning autos.” The site also has pictures of some of the members’ vehicles, information on becoming a member and the charities the Club helps to support. The Club includes members from southeastern Brunswick County; between 65 and 70 members from the Southport, Oak Island, St. James and Boiling Spring Lakes communities are in the Club. Anyone with a vehicle such as a truck from 1926 or a new Corvette or Mustang can join the Club. Competitions are usually for vehicles from 1988 and older though, Vann explained. But the Cape Fear Cruisers members won’t be competing in this show, except for the people’s choice awards. Club members and friends of the Club will instead serve as hosts and judges, handing out the coveted awards and the first place Best in Show trophy, which comes with a $100 prize and bragging rights, of course. Award categories for specific makes and models include Best Chevrolet, Best Nova, Best Chevelle, Best Corvette, Best Camaro, Best Pontiac, Best Oldsmobile, Best Thunderbird, Best Mustang, Best Dodge, Best Plymouth and Best Chrysler. Other categories will highlight the best truck, import, and street rod. Awards will also be given for the best vehicle from the 1920s or earlier, best interior, best paint, and best engine. The best Club Car will also be chosen, sort of a people’s choice award. Vann has a 1956 Ford Victoria and a

1972 Cutlass convertible. He said he usually takes the Ford to shows. “It’s red and white, and it usually gets a lot of attention,” he said. And while the car enthusiasts love the chance to show off their vehicles, for the Cape Fear Cruisers, this event is also a way to raise money for charity. Proceeds from the show will benefit local charities. Last year, the club raised $1,600 from the event. The Club donated more than $10,000 to charities last year, and has helped support toy drives, breast cancer research and Providence Home, among others. Last year, the show drew approximately 150 participants, so there will be plenty of classic vehicles to see. There will also be a 50/50 drawing, and the Southport Police Department will be there and will raffle off a men’s and a women’s bicycle and a child car seat. The Southport Fire Department will also have a ladder truck there, as long as it’s not needed elsewhere. There will also be door prizes provided by local business sponsors. Vann will serve as DJ and announcer. Setting up the show in the Walmart parking lot means there will be plenty of room for the show and for spectators’ parking. Vann said it’s also convenient for the participants, who don’t mind fitting in a little shopping and grabbing a burger at Eric’s Grille, one of the show’s sponsors. Registration is open to anyone – all cars and trucks – and costs just $20. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and trophies will be awarded starting at 2 p.m. There will be dash plaques for the first 75 entries, Top 50 Awards, awards for the top three vehicles from 1988 to present and trophies and plaques for the top vehicles from 1988 and prior years. Vann said the Club’s shows are enjoyed by many. It’s hard to estimate how many people stop by, but he said they always get great feedback. “We’re a really friendly club,” he said. 1

Shiny chrome, glossy paint, luxurious upholstery, sleek lines, and lots of horsepower -- it will all be on display at the Cape Fear Cruisers’ 11th Annual Car & Truck Show on May 7 at the Walmart in Southport.

Coveted “Ride the Tide” medals are awarded for fastest times for both single and double paddlers in both men’s and women’s categories and in different age groups. Age groups include Youth ages 12-17, Adult ages 18-30, Adult ages 30-50, and Adult ages 50 and up. A prize will also be awarded for the fastest participant to float the canal. There’s also a costume contest, and prizes are awarded for the best environmentally themed costume. “We get some really creative costumes,” Thomas said. One man dressed up as a mallard duck complete with a duck head and a kayak decorated with feathers. Two ladies once appeared as jellyfish. One man came as a shark and another as a tree. “Some people just go the Jimmy Buffet route,” Squires added, “luau shirts, leis and shark fins on their heads.”

“Davis Canal is just a beautiful scenic trail, and the route we chose is just perfect for beginning kayakers,” said Rebecca Squires, Director of Oak Island Parks and Recreation. The course follows Davis Canal for three miles, and then racers cross over to the Montgomery Slough for the remaining two miles. The route is considered easy in terms of difficulty because the tide will be flowing with the paddlers. Adventure Kayak Company in Southport is a co-sponsor of Ride the Tide. “We wanted to have something that would be a good community event for all ages and skill levels,” said Emma Thomas, owner of the company. “The name Ride the Tide came about because you literally ride the tide,” Thomas said, “We plan it so the tide is going out, and Davis Canal is a great place to paddle because there’s very little if any boat traffic.” It takes most participants two to three hours to complete. “It’s nice flat water, so you can go as fast as your body will let you,” Squires said. Robert Ruark was Home in Southport

Robert Ruark’s hollywood movie ‘Something of Value’ has roots in Southport BY: LINDA PUKENAS

Southport

Trading Company THE place to buy a Southport Souvenir

t was 1957 when theaters around the Country had posters promoting a movie starring up-and-coming actors Rock Hudson, Sidney Poitier and Dana Wynter. These young stars were bringing author/writer Robert Ruark’s novel Something of Value to life on the big screen.

Like so many of Robert Ruark’s books, biographies and syndicated columns Something of Value was shaped by his life’s experiences & views. Robert Ruark was born and raised in Wilmington, NC but considered Southport, NC home. His grandparents lived in Southport and it is where he spent most of his free time with his grandpa, Captain Edward “Ned” Adkins. Ruark’s most wellknown books, “The Old Man and the Boy,” and “The Old Man’s Boy Grows Older,” illustrated his love for his grandfather, Southport home on Lord Street, the Cape Fear River and Region and the great outdoors. His life was shaped by the lessons he learned from “The Old Man” and his time in Southport. Ruark’s love for the outdoors and the hunter within, led him to Africa where he developed a long love affair for the continent, its diverse cultures and values. The movie, Something of Value portrays the Mau Mau uprising in Kenya. It depicts the colonial and native African conflict created by colonialism and differing views on how life should be lived. The story shows two young men (one a Kenyan native & one a colonial) who have grown up together like brothers later being divided by prejudices that surface and increasing tensions as the uprising heightens. Robert Ruark’s story of two fictional charac-

ters set in true historic times is compelling and educational. The novel was published in April 1955 and MGM announced earlier that year they had bought the film rights for $300,000. The New York Times wrote of the book that “the explosive impact of Robert Ruark’s “Something of Value” will reverberate for a long time to come on both sides of the Atlantic.” It was a best-selling novel. The film’s budget was $2.6 Million and it brought in $3.6 Million at the box office but MGM later recorded a net loss. Those, of course, were in 1957 dollars. The female lead was originally announced for Grace Kelly with the final casting announced in May 1956. The movie was the sole American entry at the Venice Film Festival in 1957. Ruark published a sequel to his original novel in 1962 called Uhuru. Ruark’s Something of Value was his only novel to be made into a Hollywood movie. MGM’s 1957 classic, Something of Value starring Rock Hudson, Sidney Poitier and Dana Wynter will be shown on Friday, May 13 at 7:30 pm in Southport’s Franklin Square Park. The special screening is FREE and sponsored by the City of Southport, Southport Magazine and the Robert Ruark Society. It is the first of the City’s 2016 movie series and the first public

AT HOME IN SOUTHPORT

Robert C. Ruark was born in Wilmington, NC son of Robert and Charlotte Ruark. However, during young Robert’s life, he spent most of his free time with his grandfather, Captain Edward “Ned” Adkins in Southport, NC. From the time of his birth until Captain Adkins’ death in 1932, Ruark learned about life from the man he would call “the old man.” As a result, he always referred to Southport as “home.” After the death of his grandparents , at 15 he entered the University of North Carolina, and then later joined the Navy and worked at various jobs. In the 1940s he became a writer, first as a sports writer and then as a syndicated columnist and author. By the 1950s he was prosperous and well-known. He had married Virginia Webb in 1938; they divorced in 1963. His last trip to NC was in 1960 as he later lived in London and Barcelona before settling in Palamos, Spain. He died July 1, 1965 of cirrhosis of the liver brought on by alcoholism. He was only 49

and is buried in Palamos. Ruark wrote for countless Newspapers and Magazines for over three decades including a popular column in Field & Stream Magazine for nearly 10 years. He also authored over a dozen books and wrote & directed a movie and film. All in all, however, he will forever be remembered as Southport, North Carolina’s favorite son - a maverick adventurer and story teller who loved all the joy that could be found in the beauty and sublimity of nature.

There is much to tell about the life of Robert Ruark, his career as a big game hunter, for example, but his story always returns to his connection with Southport and the Cape Fear region. Although Robert Ruark’s short life was complex, his deep love for Southport was not. He clearly embraced and treasured this small coastal, historic city.

ROBERT RUARK SOCIETY

The Robert Ruark Society recently reorganized and expanded its mission. The Society works to preserve Robert Ruark’s heritage through fostering educational, cultural & historical activities and events depicting his life & writings. Because of Robert Ruark’s demonstrated love of the ecology of the lower Cape Fear, the Society also focuses on promoting and supporting the health and sustainability of the North Carolina coastal old oak tree population in and around the Southport region.

Anna’s mother, Ann Jarvis, had actually begun the process right after the Civil War with Mother’s Friendship Days designed to help heal the divide left in her home state of West Virginia between veterans of the Union and Confederacy, but they failed to catch on in the long term. Anna Jarvis, who remained unmarried and never became a mother herself, worked to see her mom’s idea become widely accepted. She won the backing of John Wanamaker, a Philadelphia Department store owner, and in May of 1908 the first official Mother’s Day celebration took place in a Methodist church in Grafton, West Virginia. That same day saw thousands turn out at Wanamaker’s department store to celebrate as well. After an enthusiastic letter writing campaign, Jarvis’ Mother’s Day began to be officially recognized by several states, beginning with West Virginia in 1910. Jarvis’ original Mother’s Days involved a church service and the wearing of a carnation as a tribute. Children were encouraged to write personal notes to their mothers expressing their love and thanks. By 1914 Mother’s Day, and Jarvis, had caught the attention of the White House

and Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day an official United States holiday signing a joint resolution of the US House and Senate and issuing a Proclamation reading in part, “Now, Therefore, I, Woodrow Wilson, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the said Joint Resolution, do hereby direct the government officials to display the United States flag on all government buildings and do invite the people of the United States to display the flag at their homes or other suitable places on the second Sunday in May as a public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country.” Not bad for a woman who wasn’t a mother herself in a time before women had secured the right to vote, right? But then this happy little story takes a bit of an ironic turn. By the 1920s, florists and other purveyors of gifts had grasped Mother’s Day as a wonderful sales opportunity. This bothered Jarvis, who saw her day of remembrance becoming, in her view, over-commercialized. She was particularly upset with Hallmark’s brisk business in Mother’s Day cards replacing children’s handwritten and personal notes. She became a vocal opponent of Mother’s Day, advocating for its removal from the official US holiday calendar and even once getting arrested protesting her own holiday in front of a florist shop. But in the end Jarvis lost and retailers won and today Mother’s Day represents over $16 billion in sales, making it the second biggest spending holiday in the United States, after Christmas. According to Hallmark, over 141 million Mother’s Day cards are purchased each year. Mother’s Day alone accounts for 25% of annual US flower sales. We also spend $3.1 billion taking our moms out to eat. See, according to the US Census there are 82.5 million moms in America, and we love them lots. So, how do we show our love, admiration and thankfulness? Cards and flowers and dinner are great, I mean $16 billion

CURRENTS can’t be wrong, right? But surely we can come up with something a little out of the box, can’t we? One thing we can’t put in a box, and that is more valuable than money, is our time. Simply spending time with mom is probably a pretty good bet if we want to make her feel appreciated.

If you are lucky enough to have been given an openended assignment by your editor, like me, tell your mom, Janice Stites, right in Southport Magazine how

always Brunswick Town State Historic Site and its wonderful walkway along the Cape Fear River. For a more urban experience, you can take mom on a nice stroll around beautiful downtown Southport or even downtown Wilmington’s River Walk (both places where you can grab a nice glass of wine or do a little shopping while you’re at it.) Speaking of shopping, the outlets around Myrtle Beach are always an option as well. If the weather turns iffy, there’s always the movies, museums, galleries or simply staying home and pampering her. Or if mom lives far from here, a phone call is definitely in order. The trick is spending time on your one and only mother. She deserves it, right? 1

much you appreciate her and what a great example she’s set as a parent and as a person. I love you Mom!

BIZ Q & A Bianchi Brickyard

“Mulch, Mulch” More than a one stop shop for your outdoor project needs! BY: LESLIE FOSTER

B

ianchi Brickyard Supply is very much a Family business. David Bianchi and his wife, Julie relocated from Buffalo, NY to Wilmington, NC in 1996. Five years later they opened Bianchi Brickyard Supply on River Rd in Southport. Son, Mark joined his parents as GM after graduating from UNCW. Rounding out the Bianchi team are Austin Parker and Steve Phillips, both experts in building and construction in their own right. Their combined experience in construction, material handling, sales and innovation combine seamlessly in meeting the needs of contractors and homeowners landscape and masonry projects.

When you visit the “Brickyard” and it’s adjoining landscaped patio you will be pleasantly surprised; the large yard is well laid out and easy to navigate! The patio area allows customers the opportunity to see different styles of masonry applications for ispiration of their own projects! The centerpiece of the patio is “Louigi” a pizza oven. It is fired up on Fridays and serves wood-fired pizza by the slice to customers visiting the yard. Giving back to the community and their customers is an important piece of the Bianchi philosophy. In addition to “pizza Friday’s”, owner, David Bianchi creates unique decorative designs embedded in stone known as “stone art.” “My father has had artistic blood in his veins all his life”, gushes Mark. This is certainly evident in his beautiful stone art, many of which he generously contributed to customers in the greater southport community. At Bianchi Brickyard you may walk in as a customer, but you truly get the feeling that you leave as a friend. Your vision becomes their commitment; every project is synonymous with quality, durability and truly is a work of art!

Q. WHO ARE YOUR CUSTOMERS?

A. We deal with a diverse customer demographic in Southport and surrounding towns. General contractors come to us for building supplies. They send their clients in for product selections for new home and remodels. Landscape contractors work with us for all their product needs. Homeowners come in to purchase products for almost any project you could imagine. Architects work with us for products selections commonly prior to a project beginning. We deal with community organizations and POA’s for upgrades to their surrounding landscape. Other surrounding businesses work with us for products purchases. Pretty much, everyone walks into our doors and we enjoy that. We have something for everyone.

Q. ASIDE FROM HARDSCAPE MATERIALS, WHAT ELSE DO YOU SELL AND DELIVER? A. We have grown to sell and deliver steel

rebar products for footings, block and all the other products that go with it to build a foundation, multiple types and colors of mulches and topsoil. We have increased our River Rock and gravel inventory so customers have a wider selection, along with bulk material bags to help logistics of deliveries for bulk materials. We sell brick ovens and stainless steel grills; I also like to think that along with products we sell an experience to our customers.

Q. HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR PRODUCTS “GREEN”?

A. Many of our block and paver products contain recycled materials. Our mulches and topsoil are made of recycled materials. We carry pervious pavers that can be used to reduce water runoff and recharge our water supply quicker. We also just began crushing and recycling all of our own brick, block, and stone debris to help reduce what is being hauled to our local landfills. We are extremely excited to offer this to our customers and to make a positive impact on our community by being a good steward!

Q. WHAT IS THE MOST POPULAR REQUEST YOU GET FROM YOUR CUSTOMERS? A. “Can you give us some ideas?” Q. CAN BIANCHI MEET THE NEEDS OF ALL CUSTOMER, NO MATTER THE BUDGET?

A. With our wide demographic of customers; we have helped people with small projects that only require a few pieces of stone, the patio projects that someone can knock out on the weekend, the house building that requires multiple trips to our showroom, and everything in between. If for some reason we do not have what someone is looking for we try and steer them in the right direction.

Dave, Julie and Mark Bianchi

Q. BEYOND COST, WHAT OTHER

FACTORS INFLUENCE A RESIDENTIAL INSTALLATION PROJECT?

A. Function is what we tend to start out with. “What do you intend on using the patio space for? What type of experience do you want to feel?” This usually tends to lead us to what square footage or size we are dealing with. Then we tend to move onto what is “practical”. Making the space usable is always important. Around this point we can get a general budget range to see if it will fit for the customer. This is the point we can nail down material selections. If everything fits into the general idea the customer envisioned we will make a site visit to make sure everything works. If it doesn’t work we can come tweak the design to make it fit.

Q. PIZZA FRIDAYS?! YUM. DETAILS PLEASE?

A. Pizza Friday’s are fun for all of us at the Brickyard and our customers. We tend to start up a fire in the brick oven in the morning, prep the dough and the toppings, and start cooking just before lunch. We built the brick oven about 6 years ago in our display area with the intention of cooking in it every once and a while. About 3 years ago we started to make it the norm, to cook pizzas on Fridays, since it was such a busy day and we are not able to leave the office to grab a bite to eat. Customers are always around when we are cooking so of course we are going to offer a fresh slice! Since then we haven’t looked back. We made a sign that we put out by the

road that says “Pizza Day”. Customers come in to grab some materials and quick pizza on the run. We often get the person that stops by and asks, “what’s pizza day?” It makes us happy to see people get excited to know it was cooked in a wood fired brick oven. We have definitely had fun with it!

Q: WHAT IS JULIE’S ROLE AT “THE BRICKYARD”

A: She is “ the glue” that keeps us all together.

Q: TELL US ABOUT THE OWNER AND FOUNDER, DAVE BIANCH’S STONE ART AND PHILANTOPY EFFORTS IN THE SPT COMMUNITY?

A: My father, David, has always had artistic blood pumping through his veins. He was an art major when he was young. When he was laying brick or stone and had the opportunity to install custom decorative designs he ran with it. Now he focuses on stone art. A lot of days you will catch him roaming around the yard looking for that perfect piece of stone that he can chisel and carve a design into. He has had the great opportunity to donate some of his stone art to fundraisers for local organizations and causes. He donates his time to school training programs for masonry projects. He recently worked with the local Boy Scouts to build an oven at the Brunswick Town Fort Anderson. He truly enjoys sharing his years of knowledge with anyone that is eager to learn. 1

Whistle A Happy Tune

Feel your spirits lift with music therapy BY: LESLIE RESCHLY BSN,RN

M

usic-whether playing it or listening to it-can provide you with many positive health benefits. Do you ever put on your favorite songs while relaxing or entertaining?

Can you recall a profound musical event in your life? Music has been used historically in healing as well as many cultural rituals surrounding changes in life but research today is showing it’s scientific basis. Confucius is quoted as saying “Music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without.” In fact, research shows that music stimulates many areas of the brain but in particular triggers the happiness and pleasure areas causing the neurotransmitter dopamine to be released. Dopamine is a biochemical neurotransmitter associated with feeling good, happy and in a state of pleasure. Because of this, music can be used to decrease stress and anxiety levels as well as decreasing pain or easing a painful event. Studies have shown that calming slow tempo music with low pitch can decrease your blood pressure, help you to relax before surgery or during chemotherapy, endure childbirth and ease pain after surgery or in chronic pain situations such as fibromyalgia. Preliminary studies show that music may improve immune functioning and ultimately help to prevent disease or resist illness. In Alzheimer’s disease, music can be used to

in high-pressure situations is that cognitive tasks are shown to be enhanced allowing improved performance of a skill. Some studies also suggest that the use of soft music combined with low lighting causes eating to slow down ultimately decreasing food intake and causing weight loss! While searching for information regarding music use as therapy and treatment options, I found several areas where additional studies are needed. For example, research is often biased by use of a particular music style as well as whether the music selection was made by the researcher or by the participant. Much more needs to be done to determine the benefits of playing vs. listening to music and whether group interaction affects the benefits compared to solo participants. For example, one study noted that people who played musical instruments for greater than 10 years scored higher on cognitive tests compared to their counterparts who never played music or played less than 10 years. Either way, music as a therapeutic benefit is noninvasive and inexpensive. There are no known side effects (as long as the volume is managed)! Seek out your favorite tunes and reap the benefits! 1

I remember working at a nursing home in my high school years. Several people who seemed to be almost comatose could smile, sing and often dance when old familiar tunes were played. For those of us not in any of the above circumstances, the benefits of music can be found in our day-to-day lives. Use of music during training helps with exercise and increasing endurance perhaps because the focus is off the effort and the beat increases your exercise rate. Music has also been shown to increase your relaxation and improve your sleep quality. In combination with meditation, slow music beats induce a hypnotic state allowing one to become in touch with your feelings as well as improving mood. One benefit of the use of music

SCALES Women Anglers in Training

Mermaids aren’t the only women on the water Thanks to W.A.I.T. BY: JENNIFER BARNETT

Statistics show that the number of fisherwomen out on the water or the piers is dramatically less then the number of fishermen. Chances are many women like to fish but might lack the knowledge needed to go it alone. The Oak Island Parks and Recreation Department saw a need and they developed the Women Anglers in Training Program, or W.A.I.T., for short. The two day fishing seminar, April 30-May 1, is just for women. W.A.I.T. is designed to help women become more experienced anglers in just one weekend! Even if you’ve never fished before, W.A.I.T. offers training and hands-on experience to learn how to fish, and a chance to go fishing on the water! They offer a stress free environment where women can experience the excitement of learning to fish and all the skills involved without the impatient husband or boyfriend looking over her shoulder every minute. Imagine no one scoffing because you don’t know the difference between a leader and a lure! W.A.I.T. is scheduled for Saturday, April 30th and Sunday, May 1st on Oak Island. Saturday will be a day of hands-on classroom instruction at the Oak Island Recreation Department and Sunday will be a fishing excursion to Oak Island Pier or out on private charters for practicing Saturday’s lessons and some on-the-job experience. Here is what you can expect at W.A.I.T.:

SAVOR A Locals Favorite

Loco Jo’s serves up fun and unique fare BY: REBECCA JONES

Y

in Yang, is the philosophy that everything in the universe flows with opposing but complementary forces to create a harmonious balance; welcome to Loco Jo’s Bar & Grill in Southport: keeping traditions yet innovative, playful yet serious about great food and service.

Special: Mekong Snapper served at Loco Jo’s

Brian & Joann Kimball, Owners

Loco Jo’s yin yang approach comes naturally with husband and wife, Brian and Joann Kimball. “Brian is the business side, to my creative side,” says Joann, “He balances my ‘crazy -creative side’ out,” she laughs. And she means it in a good way; the restaurant is named after her and a play on words: “Loco”, genial slang from the Spanish word for “crazy”; also ‘loco’ as a shortened version of ‘locals’; and the ‘Jo’, short for Joann. The name captures the personality of Loco Jo’s. Loco Jo’s has a fun, casual atmosphere, with bright walls, covered with photos of fishing, boats, sun and surf; cozy seating, a unique menu, a reclaimed wood bar that runs the length and host to a wide selection of micro brews; a couple outdoor tables, where one can dine with a four legged companion and a friendly staffwhere you get the impression that “everyone knows your name”- but you don’t have to be a local to feel like one. Brian and Joann both have roots in Southport. They have been together

since 1990. The couple found themselves, like many, when the market crashed, wondering what to do next-Brian was in the building business, and it was time for a change. “When the market went south- we went south - to Key West,” says Joann. While there, “we spent time in the local hangouts. Some were little hole-in-the-walls with really good food and not super expensive and decided: that’s what we wanted to do,” Joann explains enthusiastically about their ‘aha moment’- “we wanted a small place -where the locals hang out- where you could serve good food in baskets!” They brought the idea back home to Southport, finding a cozy end-spot in the Purveyors Building on Howe Street. They balanced their talents and used Brian’s building knowledge on the business side and relied on Joann’s previous restaurant knowledge. Joann grew up in the business, working in her Mom ‘s restaurant, Y’s Cafe, “an Asian restaurant serving fried rice and burgers”, says Joann, a fixture in Southport from 1986-1999, and re-

membered fondly by many. Joann has brought the Vietnamese background in food to the Loco Jo’s menu. The menu features the “Asian Persuasion”, choices like the Thict Noung: seasoned grilled pork over steamed rice with sliced cucumbers and tomatoes with a Vietnamese dipping sauce, ‘Nuoc Mam’. On this day, the special was Mekong Snapper, named after the Mekong River that runs between Vietnam and Thailand, a traditional Vietnamese meal of whole, head and tail, fried local red snapper in a Thai chili sauce reduction with Asian vegetables- top it all off with a cold bottle of Vietnamese beer, 33 Export, and the dish is complete! Joann incorporates some of her Mom’s tried and true recipes from Y’s Cafe, her sister, Kim’s, spicy chicken is a feature as are her Mom’s infamous egg rolls with the special homemade mustard sauce. “Kim comes in to roll them by hand,” says Joann. It’s a special nostalgic treat for locals that remember Y’s and a favorite for new customers. The menu also features starters, like fried green beans and buffalo shrimp bites; salads, sandwiches and wraps, like the Loco Burger topped with mushrooms, onions and Swiss- try it with one of the micro beers, Railhouse Brewing Company or Double Barley are two-both from North Carolina, on tap. The Loco Jo’s “Favorites” include the number one selling baja-style fish tacos served with tortilla chips and salsa. Loco Jo’s also features what Joann calls, ‘Blackboard Specials’ that change daily - one to watch for: the Bohemian Conch Ceviche offered during the summer months it’s “phenomenal!” exclaims Joann. Loco Jo’s quickly earned it’s reputation

as being a local’s favorite the first day the doors opened for business on Christmas Day 2008. Brian and Joann explain the Holiday date: locals had been checking the progress of the restaurant, while Brian was working on all the renovations: “’Why don’t you open on Christmas Day?’ they asked- ‘we can come and celebrate’”, and being true to the vision of a fun gathering spot-where the locals hang out-and the good food is served in baskets- that’s what they did-creating a loyal following. 1

Loco Jo’s is open Monday thru Saturday 11am-9pm and continues the tradition of being open on Christmas Day. They are located at 602 N. Howe Street in Southport, They can be reached at: 910-457-9009 and found on Facebook at Loco Jo’s.

CHEERS Celebrating Cinco de Mayo!

A Good Reason To Drink A Margarita STORY BY: KRIS BEASL EY

M

Southport 417 N. Howe St (910) 454-8833

ay 5th is Cinco de Mayo and cause for celebration. While many think it is Mexico’s Independence Day, it is actually a celebration to commemorate the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

This holiday gives us our inspiration to feature Margarita recipes this month. The margarita cocktail – a famous concoction of tequila, Cointreau or Triple Sec, and lime juice – has been around since the 1940s. Every bartender in the world has put a unique spin on this classic, but no one knows who created the original. Many people claim that they invented the margarita, including a bartender named Willie from Mexico City. He said that in 1934 he created and named the drink for his friend Marguerite Hemery. Another legend is that Carlos “Danny” Herrera developed the drink at his restaurant in

Tijuana in 1938. He invented it for Marjorie King, a customer who was allergic to all hard alcohol except tequila, and didn’t like its sour taste. Another story is that the Dallas socialite, Margarita Sames mixed up the drink in 1948 for a house full of guests. One of them was Tommy Hilton who later added the drink to the bar menu at his hotels. While the true identity of the tequila master may never be known, the margarita will go down in history as one of the most popular mixed drinks of all time. Whether you like yours on the rocks, salt or no salt, we hope these recipes will help you celebrate your own Cinco de Mayo!

The perfect excuse for a romantic date night!

• 1 Tbs. garlic powder

BY: KRIS BEASLEY

• 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper

here is no better time than the month of May to pack up a basket full of goodies, grab a blanket and have a picnic with your loved one. In our fast paced lifestyle there is little time for social relationships, and a picnic offers a bonding experience for you and your significant other.

• 1-1/4 tsp. smoked paprika

T

Alan and Kris Beasley of Southport Magazine enjoy a picnic on the Garrison Lawn.

The inspiration for this months article and the perfect reason to take action is, Friday, May 13, a special viewing of the 1957 drama, “Something of Value” will open this year’s season of Southport Outdoor Movie Nights. This film was adapted from the novel written by Robert Ruark, Wilmington and Southport’s native son. This free event will be held under the live oaks in Franklin Square Park at dusk, approximately 8:00 pm. Baked With Love restaurant will be selling picnic meals. A portion of the proceeds from the meals will be donated to the Southport Robert Ruark Society. But if you want to create your own picnic masterpiece, we have put together some fun recipes to try. And don’t forget to include some grapes to feed each other!

PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY WITH A TWIST

In place of jelly, use fresh fruit like pomegranate seeds or strawberries. Use slices of pound cake in place of bread. Or replace the jelly with Nutella and add crumbled bacon. Use a hot dog bun, spread with peanut butter, place a banana in the bun and top with jelly.

MAKE HIM CRY IT’S SO GOOD, FRIED CHICKEN For the brine • 2-1/2 oz. kosher salt (1/2 cup Diamond Crystal or 1/4 cup plus 1 tsp. Morton) • 1/2 cup granulated sugar • 1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes • 1 large orange • 1 large lemon • 2 boneless skin-on chicken breasts, halved crosswise • 2 boneless skin-on chicken thighs • 2 bone-in chicken drumsticks For the honey butter • 4 oz. (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, softened • 1/2 cup honey • 1/2 tsp. kosher salt; more to taste For dredging and frying

• 1 Tbs. freshly ground black pepper • 2 tsp. onion powder • 1/2 tsp. baking powder

• 2 cups buttermilk • 1 gallon canola oil or rice bran oil Brine the chicken Combine the salt, sugar, pepper flakes, and 1 gallon water in a large pot. Using a vegetable peeler, and lemon in strips, and add the zest to the pot. Stir over medium heat until the salt and sugar dissolve, about 5 minutes. Cool to room temperature in the pot or other large container. Add the chicken, cover, and refrigerate for at least 12 and up to 24 hours. Make the honey butter Using an electric mixer, whip the butter ingredients in a medium bowl until fluffy, about 2 minutes. Season to taste with more salt. Dredge and fry the chicken In a large bowl, whisk the flours, 1 Tbs. of the salt, garlic powder, black pepper, onion powder, baking powder, cayenne, and 1/4 tsp. of the paprika. Remove the chicken from the brine and blot dry with paper towels. Pour the buttermilk into a medium bowl and dip a piece of chicken into it, letting the excess drip back into the bowl. Dredge the chicken in the flour mixture, dragging it through to coat both sides but not too thickly. Repeat with the remaining pieces and set aside while you heat the oil. Set a wire rack on a paper-towel lined rimmed baking sheet. Fit an 8-quart Dutch oven or other heavy-duty pot with a deep-fry thermometer, add the oil, and heat over medium high to 340°F. Working in batches, fry the chicken, adjusting the heat as needed to maintain 340°F, until an instant-read thermometer registers 165°F in the thickest part of each piece, about 8 minutes for the boneless pieces and 10 to 12 minutes for the drumsticks. Transfer the chicken to the rack. Combine the remaining 1 tsp. paprika and 1/2 tsp. kosher salt and sprinkle half of it over the chicken while it’s hot. Let the chicken rest 1 minute, turn the pieces over, then sprinkle a little of the paprika mixture over the other side. Serve with the honey butter on the side, or generously smear some of it on the chicken before serving.

CAULIFLOWER AND GREEN BEAN SALAD

Steam cauliflower florets and green beans for 2-3 minutes so that they still have some bite. Toss them into a French dressing with a mashed anchovy fillet and small garlic clove, Dijon mustard and masses of freshly chopped tarragon.

GUACASALSA

Mash an avocado up in some salsa. Don’t forget the chips.

BLACK BEAN SALAD

Soak a can of rinsed black beans in sherry or wine; toss with a cup of cooked rice, 1 TB soy sauce, 1 TB rice wine vinegar, 1 tea. Sesame oil and 1 TB chopped parsley.

MELON SPEARS

Cut your favorite melon (cantaloupe or honey dew) into wedges and wrap with thin slices of prosciutto. Stack in a container, sprinkle with a little olive oil and black pepper.

BLUEBERRIES

Toss 2 cups of fresh blueberries with cornbread cubes(about a cup), add 1-2 TB of lemon juice and olive oil and 1/2 cup of chopped hazelnuts.

SCENE Rock the Kasbah

A true story, made unbelievable in so many ways BY: EMILY KLINEFELTER

B

ill Murray, Bruce Willis, Kate Hudson, Zooey Deschanel, and Danny McBride are all hanging out in Afghanistan … sounds like the start to a bad joke … but it’s not, it’s the line up to a 2015 Redbox movie called Rock the Kasbah!

This star filled comedy starts out in a beat up, run-down motel in Van Nuys, California with the lovely vocals (I am being facetious here) of a young girl looking to recruit an agent to further her singing career. Richie Lanz (Bill Murray) is a washedup music manager running, what seems to be, a dishonest business in hopes of becoming, once again, a top talent agent! For it was he who discovered Madonna, ya know! One night Ronnie (Zooey Deschanel) Richie’s one and only client was performing covers in a dive bar when a very intoxicated man offered to put Ronnie on the road! A real music tour! A USO tour! In Afghanistan! Woo!! Wait… what? The next few scenes are hysterical- Zooey Deschanel is amazing and she plays the freaked out rock star very well! But, after Zooey meets Bruce Willis the movie really starts to slow down. Not long after landing in Afghanistan Ronnie ditches Richie and the lonely music agent is left with no talent to represent,

but the show must go on! Richie is left with no military protection, no money, and no passport, basically no way to get home to the United States. Our attention toward this movie left about as fast as Ronnie left Richie in Afghanistan. With no money and no way home Richie meets up with some other American war profiteers who offer to help Richie make some money out of the kindness of their hearts so that he can get home to the United States. They asked him to deliver a few weapons (and by a few we mean many boxes, big boxes) to a group of men out in the desert. Quick and easy money. Get in get out. What could go wrong? Boom! A lot goes wrong. Richie and his surviving crew are politely invited to stay for dinner and the night by the group of men he was delivering weapons to and to further discuss payment arrangements. Discussions were a little touch and go as you can imagine… Things were appearing not to be working out in Richie’s best interest. Richie was going to

leave empty handed. Then in the darkness of the night his luck turns and he hears a voice in a cave! A wonderful voice of a teenage girl, Pashtun! He finds out who she is and tries to get permission from her father to let him represent her and help her succeed in her dream of becoming a singer. Her father of course says no. It is not appropriate, in Afghanistan, for a female to sing and perform. It would bring dishonor to their family. Richie really does leave the next morning empty handed, no money for the weapons and no Pashtun. Or did he? Let’s be honest, has a father saying no or the idea of bringing dishonor on an entire family ever stopped a teenage girl from doing what she wants to do? Next in Richie’s unbelievable journey through the deadly streets of Afghanistan is a stop at a studio where Afghan Star is recorded. Not unlike our very own American Idol. Afghan Star showcases young men, because women are not allowed, on television while viewers vote on their favorite talent. The plan is to get Pashtun on the show so she can win and get noticed and become a big star! And of course to make Richie some money so he can get home! Except he is confronted with a huge obstacle… women aren’t allowed to sing or dance. No woman has ever performed on Afghan Star. Side note: around this part is where our friend Megan fell asleep. Richie is determined to make her the first female to do this! Needing a little help, Richie decides to partner up with a few other Americans. With the help from a business savvy hooker (Kate Hudson) and the sexy, trigger happy Bruce Willis they move forward with Richie’s plan to make Pashtun an Afghan Star. With a few complications the team embarks on a controversial mission together, in this not so safe country with their very strict traditions and views. They are determined to make sure she has a chance and that Richie’s new talent gets heard. Do they get her on stage? Does she sing? If they do, does she win? Does Richie make it home to the United States? Well, you will have to watch the movie to find out! The soundtrack to this movie was good, we enjoyed that part, but we found the movie to be slow and not as exciting or funny as we thought it would be. It had a cast of heavy hitters but didn’t begin to knock it out of the park. However, as we mentioned before the scenes with Zooey are really funny. So you can shut it off after 25 minutes and not miss much…
