Ships A-home! Living aboard the EOS
STORY AND PICTURES BY KRIS BEASLEY
O
ak Island Residents, Steve and Robin Schuster have owned the Yacht EOS for eight years. It is a Carver 36 Aft Cabin, built in 1992. Steve who was previously the Town Manager of Topsail Island and North Topsail Island, bought the boat to live aboard during the work week.
“I had been renting a condominium at Topsail, but wanted to own something rather than rent.” Says Steve. “I looked around for a good sailboat to buy, but found that most sailboats I looked at were not tall enough to stand up in.” Steve stands 6 foot 4 inches and quickly ruled out sailboats because he didn’t want to have to walk about crouched over. He enlisted the help of a boat broker in Wrightsville Beach to help him find a boat that would work as a comfortable place to live. He located the boat at the Yacht Club, in Hilton Head Island, South Caroli-
na. Steve and Robin drove down to take a look at it and bought it! The previous owner worked for the CIA and his son, who was in the Air Force, named the boat EOS, which means, New Dawn in Bosnian. Once the paper work was complete, the broker flew Steve and a friend down to Hilton Head to pick up the boat and navigate it back to Topsail Island. “It was a great trip back up the Intracoastal Waterway. We went by Parris Island, Charleston Harbor, Isle of Palms, Georgetown, Myrtle Beach, Oak Island, Wrightsville Beach

and finally Topsail Island.” It took them three days to complete the trip by boat from Hilton Head to Topsail. Steve kept the boat at Harbour Village Marina in Hampstead, North Carolina. And for four years, he lived on the EOS Monday through Friday and would drive home to Oak Island on the weekends. He found that the cost of owning the boat, including the boat slip rental, insurance, fuel and maintenance, was less than what he would have paid, had he continued to rent a condominium. The length of the EOS is 36.5 feet. Twin Crusader engines, approximately 700 horsepower. Both engines have less than 300 hours. To enter the boat, you step on white platform that runs across the back of the boat, and climb up a small ladder, which enters onto the back deck. Steve reminisced that the deck was the

perfect place to enjoy an evening cocktail after work. Robin likes to drink her morning coffee there and enjoy the breeze. The deck provides plenty of room for a small table and chairs. Robin has a small tree, which she decorates for the holidays! Too cute! The entire boat can be enclosed by plastic, zippered flaps that you can see through. You can roll them up to allow breeze to blow through, or keep them zipped up to stay dry and warm. To the left, on the back deck, are stairs that lead to the upper deck and helm. The boats hosts twin helms, up an down, allowing two choices for navigation. The upper helm has a great view and an additional deck on the front of the boat. There is a large cushioned seat beside the Captains chair, which is perfect for visitors.

To enter the main living area of the boat, there are two double doors off of the back deck. Carpeted stairs lead down into the living room and lower helm. The living room has a nice big sectional sofa and a flat screen TV. And one of the best features that Steve found, was that the 14 foot beam allowed him to easily move around the interior of the boat without having to crouch down.

Just off the living room is the kitchen and dining area. I was very impressed with the size of the kitchen! The kitchen, which hosts a full size oven, sink and fridge, allowed Steve to cook and eat most of his meals on board. Across from the kitchen there is a dining area that can comfortably fit four people. I joked with Robin during the interview, “You could cook a Thanksgiving feast in this kitchen!
Another appealing feature about the EOS is that you can walk freely around in the boat without the feeling that you are on a boat. There are two cabins and two bathrooms. The front bedroom is just off the kitchen. I took a picture of Robin enjoying a book, while she lounges on the bed. Two people could comfortably sleep in the front bedroom. And a bathroom conveniently separates the bedroom from the kitchen.

The Master bedroom is located in the rear of the boat. The bed is large enough for two people to sleep in comfortably. And there is room to walk around the bed, which is nice. “I soon found out that there is nothing as great as sleeping on a boat. It is great!” Steve explained. And just off the Master bedroom is the second bath, with a full size, stand up, shower. Another feature that sold Steve on the boat, as he was able to stand up in the shower. “Not too many boats offer a stand up shower!” he laughs. I asked Steve if the EOS was hard to steer
or maneuver and he said he enlisted the help of friend who knew what he was doing to show him how to navigate the boat. “If it is windy, you definitely need to know what you are doing.” The American Boating Association website offers lots of guidance for boat owners - americanboating.org Currently the EOS is docked at the South Harbor Marina. The slip is located right beside Joseph’s Italian Bistro, which is a really nice perk! Steve says he hires J & J Diving to clean the bottom of the boat once a month.

HEALTH The Itsy Bitsy Spider Can Have Quite A Big Bite! STORY BY: LESLIE RESCHLY, BSN, RN
W
alk up to my front door and you will see nature has already decorated my home for Halloween with an abundance of spider webs and beautiful spiders lining my entire walkway and front door in webs often 6-8 feet in span. As the mosquitos swarm, I cannot bear to knock them down. Perhaps those intricate web systems will catch a few thousand?
the venom destroys the skin layers. This can also turn black or dark in color. Both types of these bites require immediate medical attention. They can be deadly especially in children. If you did not see the spider bite you, it is often difficult to determine if you indeed received a spider bite. Several types of skin infections such as that caused by Staphylococcus as well as bites from other insects may initially mimic a spider bite. If you are bitten and can safely trap and transport the spider or the remains, the process may be much easier for your health care professional. Immediate first aid should be to wash the area with soap and water. Apply cool water or cold compresses to the area keeping it elevated if possible. Seek immediate attention from your nearest emergency room. Black Widow anti-venom may be a treatment option. In addition, tetanus spores may infect spider bites so frequently patients are given a Tetanus booster. Finally, the tissue death caused by a Brown Recluse spider bite may need surgical treatment. Prevention is always the key. Check your environment for potential hazards which may be harboring these critters. Southport Magazine owner, Kris Beasley, most recently had a very close encounter with a black widow while working in her back yard landscaping. Luckily, her rapid heart rate was from running to get something to exterminate it and not from a bite! Always wear protective gloves, pants, shirts and boots when working with yard debris or stacked wood, pots

and planters etc. Inspect shoes and shake them to remove any hidden spiders. Check equipment before reaching your hand in anywhere. Generally, the spiders are not aggressive but will bite because they are trapped or contacted unintentionally. May the spiders you encounter this month will be the big black artificial type that are here just for the Halloween season! 1
The female black widow spider is considered the most venomous spider in North America with a tendancy to eat their mates.
On the ground and hidden in dark places in our geographical location are spiders that are not so beneficial. Primarily, two types of venomous spiders live and breathe in and around Southport and the surrounding area. They are the Black Widow and the Brown Recluse spider. These spiders make their habitat in warm, undisturbed areas like basements, woodpiles, amongst unused pots, in landscaping rocks/blocks, along fences or where yard debris has accumulated. The brown recluse is particularly known for living in closets and shoes that are outside or back in a dark corner. Both have been known to frequent outdoor toilets as well. The Black Widow spider is characterized by its shiny black appearance and red hourglass design on its abdomen. The bite of the Black Widow spider is often described like a needle or pinprick leaving a set of fang marks or puncture marks at entry. This spider bite releases a neurotox-
in that quickly spreads to the chest, abdomen and body. Symptoms include immediate pain, redness, swelling and burning, nausea and/or vomiting, fever/chills with the onset of severe abdomen cramps within 20-30 minutes or other muscle cramps. Symptoms of severe allergy or anaphylaxis include hives, shortness of breath or wheezing and muscle weakness. The Brown Recluse spider displays a light colored, hairless abdomen with a chest and thorax described as a “violin pattern on the upper back. Generally, the bite is experienced as a mild sting with redness then severe pain, fever and chills frequently within 8 hours or later. Some people experience a small white blister or a blue/purple discoloration in the area that is then surrounded by a lighter ring and a large outer ring that is often reddened. (Think Target) The fluid filled blister that forms will slough from the area leaving a deep ulcerated hole as
The brown recluse, although rare in North Carolina, is shy and likes to hide. Interesting fact: it only has 6 eyes instead of the usual 8 for Arachnids

SHOWCASE A Lifelong Love of Music
Listen Up Brunswick County is a non-profit group formed to provide noteworthy live musical experiences. The group offers new or established singer/songwriters performing original music in a variety of genres including folk, R & B, Bluegrass, Country and Blues, according to the website, http://www.listenupbrunswickcounty.com/home.html. The idea is to offer an intimate, up close and personal evening with the entertainers. Gardner’s excitement for the upcoming show fits in perfectly with organizers’ goals. “I hope people just come and take a chance and seeing something new,” Gardner said. “Lately I’ve been thinking about how these kind of concerts can bring communities together. People can come listen to the music, start conversations and meet some of their friends and neighbors. I hope that people will take advantage of that.” For more information on Jim Henry, visit http://www.jimhenry.net/ and for more information on Abbie Gardner visit www.abbiegardner.com. 1
Delivered up close and personal STORY BY: LISA P. STITES
T
his fall, the Listen Up Brunswick County concert series brings a couple of singer/songwriters to the stage at Odell Williamson Auditorium. Abbie Gardner and Jim Henry will share headlining duties for a concert October 29. Southport Magazine caught up with Gardner as she traveled home from a gig last month. Gardner explained that she and Henry will play the whole show together, taking turns showcasing their songs.
“I’ll play two songs and he’ll back me up,” she said. “And then he’ll play two songs and I’ll back him up. It makes for a unique show. We do a lot of interaction, do a lot of harmony signing, and there’s a lot of spontaneity that comes out of it.” Gardner plays a Dobro, a resonator guitar. Henry also plays a Dobro, along with a variety of acoustic guitars and mandolin. Gardner said she started playing Dobro when playing other neck instruments gave her tendonitis. “I remember watching Jerry Douglas who I’d seen growing up at bluegrass festivals and thinking I need to play like that,” she said. Gardner said she has always loved the slide guitar sound in general. But the Dobro has almost a vocal, singing quality to it. “I love the sound of it. If you play one note and get it right, it’s just great,” she said. Music has been a part of her life from the beginning, and her jazz musician fa-
ther continues to have a big influence on her. Gardner said she thought traveling for shows was how all families lived. “Doesn’t everybody’s dad go to New York City and play jazz festivals?” she remembers thinking. Her father Herb even made an appearance on piano for her most recent album, called “Hope.” She continues to be impressed by his love for the art. “He still does more than I ever do and he is in his 70s. It’s pretty inspiring. Once in a while we do gigs together,” she said. Gardner spent 11 years touring with the band Red Molly before striking out on her own. Her songs cover a wide range of experiences, some from her own life and some completely made up. “Some of it comes from my own direct experiences. Sometimes I like a word or a phrase and I just make up a story, like
my song ‘Jezebel,’ where I just really liked that word so I just thought what would that person would be like. So I wrote a whole song based on that,” she said. And what’s it like when she’s on stage sharing her music with an appreciative audience? “There’s nothing like it, honestly,” she said. “It’s such a real time thing. There’s a song I made up on my couch one night, and I wasn’t even sure it was a song until I played it for people.”
Gardner said her favorite song is called “The Mind of a Soldier.” She said she has played it for veterans and loved their reaction to it.
“It’s about veterans and also about their families, and the hardship of being home, about a wife and her husband is overseas and what happens when he comes back. How do they love again? It’s one of the only songs that I play that I can’t talk afterwards sometimes.” Another favorite of hers to perform is “Only Right When It’s Wrong.” She said it’s “sort of dark” with a lot of minors and blues elements. “That comes from my dad as well. Jazz and Blues infiltrate my songwriting sometimes.” Tickets for the show are $25 and are available online at http://www.listenupbrunswickcounty.com/ticket-sales.html.

SCENE Psycho (1998)
R | 1h 45min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller | 4 December 1998 (USA) BY: EMILY KLINEFELTER
I
just want to start off by saying; I think Vince Vaughn crushed this role (in a good way). I didn’t know he could play this type of character until I witnessed it, and he did a great job!
Marion Crane (Anne Heche), a beautiful blonde, is looking for a fresh start with her broke boyfriend. She finds herself at a crossroad in her life. Her bosses have handed her $400,000.00 to deposit. Here is the dilemma, steal the money or don’t steal the money, ha! Steal the money! After getting just a little paranoid about stealing a TON of money, Marion stops at a used car lot and trades in her car on the way to see her boyfriend. She then pulls to the ide of the road to take a nap because felonies are exhaust-
ing… A creepy police officer wakes her and sends her on her way. Then when it gets late she pulls into a motel, this time, to rest for the night. “Oh, we have 12 vacancies. 12 cabins, 12 vacancies.” – Norman Marion meets the son of the motel owner Norman (Vince Vaughn). He is an awkward, soft spoken, kind man, who seems to take great interest in Marion. After Norman checks her into her room he invites her over for dinner. “I don’t set a fancy table, but my kitchen’s awful homey.”- Norman
Marion agrees to join him. As she is getting ready she over hears Norman and his overly domineering mother arguing about his dinner invite. Norman decides to bring down dinner and eat in the back room with Marion rather than have her come up to his house, which is located right next to the motel. The two talk and share in small talk. Marion learns that Norman enjoys taxidermy and that even though his mother is nasty to him… “A boy’s best friend is his mother.”Norman The night continues and Norman shows a creepier side so Marion excuses herself for the night. Norman isn’t terribly thrilled that she is retiring for the evening but alas, they part. Or do they? Riddle me this: A mother, a son and a woman sit down for dinner. Everyone

Psycho (1960) The original thrill ride! BY: JENNIFER BARNETT
W
hen you look on IMDb, the internet movie database, this is the description they have for Psycho; A Phoenix secretary embezzles $40,000 from her employer’s client, goes on the run, and checks into a remote motel run by a young man under the domination of his mother. Wow!
This summary sounds like a boring drama with men in suits and a mother forcing her son to vacuum motel rooms all day! I think we all know better than that! Back in 1960 when people first saw this movie they were horrified! I have seen this movie a number of times. I bet you would think that with the introduction of so many gory, special effect packed, horror flicks that this one would offer not even one chill bump. Well, you would be wrong. I love this movie! It is still so fun to watch. It still has me on the edge of my seat one minute and hiding behind a pillow the next. Lets just talk about Anthony Perkins (Norman Bates) for a moment. He is small in stature; he has a young baby face and talks so soft and sweet. He is gentle and kind. People in Norman’s town know him and trust him. Yet, Anthony Perkins does such a great job of embracing the silent calm and taking his time. The lack of drama and sound is what makes this film so terrifying! That and the craziness you think you see in his eyes every now and then. He is brilliant! Janet Leigh (Marion Crane) is perfect at being paranoid and anxious. I had to keep reminding myself to breathe! She had me on the edge of my seat and a couple of times looking over my shoulder! This movie is a great date night film. Having someone to hold on to and exhale with occasionally makes it fun! If you are not interested in gross horror movies but want to get into the Halloween spirit, see this movie. It is perfect for you! It’s the time of year for chill bumps! 1

Body Snatchers (1993)
Southport's Best Kept Secret
R | 1h 27min | Sci-Fi, Horror, Thriller 28 January 1994 (USA) BY: EMILY KLINEFELTER
“T
NEW BREW MEMBERS TO OUR EXTENSIVE BREW FAMILY
hey get you when you sleep!” These foreboding words are spoken to Marti (Gabrielle Anwar) by a crazed young solider, in the ladies room of a gas station, just outside of the military base she and her family were relocating to - not creepy or off putting at all. start to piece together that the base is being overrun with aliens poised on taking over the human race! “Where you gonna go, where you gonna run, where you gonna hide? NOWHERE… ‘cause there’s no one like you left.” - Carol This Body Snatcher’s is the 3rd screen version of Jack Finney’s cold war science fiction novel Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The original was made in the 50’s and the first remake was filmed in the 70’s. This 90’s version was an interesting take on the military’s point of view. 1

“Generally, I enjoyed that Psycho … Marti’s dad, Steve Malone (Terry Kinney) is an Environmental Protection Agency Inspector who was hired to check for toxic materials throughout the base. The toxic sludge is the least of his worries! Shortly after the family arrives, Marti wonders off and finds herself walking into a restricted area on the base. Seems easy enough to do, because who wouldn’t make that mistake, right? Armed military men surround her and tell her to leave Woosh! A car pulls up with a cute rebel chic rockin’ a pixie cut, Jean Platt (Christine Elise) and tells Marti to get in the car! They become instant friends. Jean is the base commander’s daughter and knows the “ins” and “outs” of the base and takes Marti under her wing. Meanwhile Marti’s younger brother, Andy (Reilly Murphy) is at his first day of school and strange things are happening.
The teacher asks all the kids to paint pictures. After a little bit of time the teacher asks all the students to hold up their pictures. Every picture is exactly the same… except poor Andy’s. Que doom music here and the running! Go Andy Go! Andy is little and doesn’t make it far until a solider, Tim Young (Billy Wirth), catches him and takes him home. Luckily Marti had just gotten home from her strange encounter with the soldiers in the restricted area and got to lay eyes on the young stud. Love is in the air. Later that week Andy walks into his parents’ room and witnesses his mom… dissolving, empty corpse collapse… I’m not sure what you would call it but, Carol’s been snatched! (We all agreed, Andy is going to need hours upon hours of therapy.) Things hit the fan as Marti and Steve

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) How well do you know your neighbors? BY: JENNIFER BARNETT
“T
he mind is a strange and wonderful thing. I’m not sure it will ever be able to figure itself out. Everything else maybe, from the atom to the universe; everything except itself.”
Invasion of the Body Snatchers starts off somewhat slow, but ends up being so suspenseful. The story has been redone and revised several times in the years since the original: an unknown alien plant species has landed on earth, and replaces people as they sleep with perfect clones. Perfect, except they have no emotions of any kind. The main characters are Dr. Miles J. Bennell (Kevin McCarthy) and Becky Driscoll (Dana Wynter) who slowly come to understand that something sinister is happening to their town and spend most of the movie trying to stay awake and find some way to escape their fate. This is an awesome movie full of suspense. You will be on the edge of your chair until the very end! It is creepy to see the town’s people change over night. According to film experts, there are many ways to interpret this film. On IMDb, the internet movie database, I read this - This film can be seen as a paranoid 1950s warning against those Damn Commies or, conversely, as a metaphor for the

tyranny of McCarthyism (or the totalitarian system of Your Choice) and has a pro- and epilogue that was forced upon Siegel by the studio to lighten the tone. You can be the judge. I thoroughly enjoy this movie because of the cinematography. It’s a black and white movie and so they rely on the use of shadows and angles to create the mood. It is genius! You do not need to be a horror flick fan to like this movie. It is more of a suspenseful thriller. It is so much better than the many remakes. Be sure to see this one first before you fall for the color and flash of the others. You won’t be disappointed! “I’ve been afraid a lot of times in my life. But I didn’t know the real meaning of fear until... until I had kissed Becky.” 1

SAVOR Chili Champs & Charity – The Perfect Combination! The 6th Annual Hometown Heroes Chili CookOff serves up the heat on November 12th STORY BY: AMI BROWN
M
ake your way to the Oak Island Moose Lodge for the The 6th Annual Hometown Heroes Chili Cook-Off (12:30 – 3 p.m.) all you need is 5 bucks and hearty appetite for chili, chili and more chili! Come and taste them all! From beef, pork, chicken to venison and vegetarian, hot, mild and in between, there will be chili for everyone.
Oh yes… with and without beans. Some in crockpots cook overnight, some sit and simmer on the stove. Some have onions, peppers and chunks of tomato… some are even secret family recipes. All this chili talk is really making me hungry! For a chili-sampling good time, this is the place for you. The Hometown Heroes Chili Cook-Off is a community event you definitely do not want to miss. Brunswick County locals have lined up to enter this year’s chili contest. Our Hometown Heroes entrants are open to Brunswick County Scouts, First Responders (Sheriff’s Dept, Fire Dept, EMS, etc.), Active or Retired Military Veterans and a separate category reserved just for local restaurants.
The organizers always have individuals asking each year to participate, but sorry folks, it’s only for our community heroes at this time. The Civitans would love to see the project grow even bigger, but they would need to hire an organizer, which is more cost. Fun for the whole day will include live music to delight the senses as you partake in your chili choice. There will also be a silent auction, 50/50 raffle, and a bake sale. You can sample all the chili and vote for your favorite. You’ll have to stay around until the end to find out who the Chili Champs are. Last year the Sheriff’s Department won first place for the Judges Award and had the honor all year to display the “Perpetual
Chili Cup Trophy”. The Boy Scouts won the People’s Choice Award Plaque and Southport Smokehouse took out the restaurant division. The WWAY reporters make the perfect judges, tasting and reporting all the scrumptious results as the action unfolds. This year the group anticipates more entries, yummier chili and even bigger prizes. The bake sale includes home made pies, cakes, and plenty of mouth-watering sweets for the discerning sweet-tooth. Each year local businesses donate gift certificates, merchandise, jewelry, loaded baskets and lots of other fun goodies for the raffle and silent auction. All this chili is delicious, but the funds raised on the day is the true icing on the cake. The Apple Project puts iPads in the EC (exception children’s) classrooms in Brunswick County. Some of these kids don’t learn in the conventional way, some are even non-verbal and are unable to communicate. The teachers expressed a need, and the Civitans stepped up, making it their goal for every room! These iPads are a tremendous learning tool that the children can use, learn and even communicate with special apps installed. The learning tools feel like games, so it makes learning basic skills like reading and math, fun and easy. So far the Civitans have put 40 iPads in the classrooms, with another 60 to go. Brunswick County schools are a powerful partner in the project and are dedicated to keeping the iPads within each EC classroom. Where there is currently no additional funds available for these classrooms, this is a vital project for these teachers. Flagship member, Jonathan Peele said, “We know how important this project is to the children, it’s beneficial to the teachers and the more people re-
alize that, we can gain more and more support.” It sure would be great to raise enough this year the 60 iPads needed. The SE Brunswick Civitan group sponsors this growing fundraiser each year, with all the proceeds of the Chili Cook Off going directly back to the local community and the Apple Project. The group focusses their funds all year on kids with special needs, the Boys & Girls Club at Lake Waccamaw, Special Olympics Spring Games, Duke Children’s Hospital and Children’s Brain Cancer Research Programs. If you would like to sponsor, donate or volunteer, please give Jonathan Peele a call. It’s not too late to enter too if you are a local restaurant or hero! CHEERS
A couple of crisp, sweet wines I want to mention from North Carolina wineries are: Sangria by Duplin Winery and Somerset by Vineyards on the Scuppernong. You could call these a dessert wine or just a sweet alternative to your dry whites. Again, these are the icing on the cake, while sitting and relaxing to another gorgeous Southport Sunset. Here are two of my favorite sweet cocktails (to die for)
The Sweet Beer Alternative BY AMI BROWN
F
or all of you non-hip, non-hop loving drinkers, I have a few sweet drink options so you can still be one of the “In-crowd” even if you don’t like beer. I like sweet drinks, and beer just doesn’t cut it for me. It’s the age of Micro-breweries, craft beer and garage home brew. Every time you turn around, there is a new trendy beer, offering up tastes like pumpkin spice, chocolate, oatmeal, pizza and even banana. Now I have tried a few of these with the expectation that “it won’t really taste like beer”. Guess what? I was wrong every time. Now, don’t get me wrong, they had flavor, but underlying was the distinct taste of yeasty beer, which for some reason – I
MIKE’S HARD LEMONADE
One of my all time favorites. There are so many flavors to choose from, but I recommend the variety pack. You get 4 options, and you’re probably going to like all of them. My personal choice is Blood Orange or Pink Lemonade. They both have a sweet, fruity and crisp taste that is not too tart. Perfect for a warm night, or just chillin’ out with friends. Be careful, it’s hard to drink just one! Regular Mike’s is a 5% alcohol content, where Mike’s Harder Lemonade is an 8%.
just don’t like. (Sorry everyone!) I know there are a lot of people in my boat. You want to go out, to a bar, have a couple drinks, enjoy friends, chat, etc. A glass of wine just feels out of place, and some bars don’t have wine, or you may not like wine either. Now I’ve tasted a lot of alternatives and here are a few sweet favorites that come in a bottle and even look a like a beer especially with a koozie.
HARD CIDER
Way too many to mention here! Craft Ciders are a HUGE industry, and new flavors and brands pop up daily! They are traditionally made from apples, but can be made with pears, grapes, blackberries… just about any fruit you can imagine. Ciders offer an ideal alternative, especially as the weather changes to Fall. Not quite as sweet, but still cool and refreshing. My personal choice is Woodchuck Granny Smith Apple or Pear. They usually have a 5% alcohol content. Other nice choices are Angry Orchard, Redd’s or Old Mount. Oh yeah, anything called “Scrumpy” is usually scrumptious!
THE SUNSET KISS (AMI’S ORIGINAL)
In a tall glass of ice, add: 1 oz Watermelon Pucker Liquor 1 oz White Rum (or Malibu Rum) Fill almost full with half pineapple juice, half orange juice (or you can use a fruit juice combo/ blend) Top with a generous drizzle of grenadine syrup Garnish with an orange, pineapple, strawberry or cherry
OVER THE BARREL HARD SODAS
Now if you really gave a sweet tooth – this is the drink for you! A little like cool-ade on steroids, Over the Barrel Hard Sodas come in Blueberry, Grape, Black Cherry, Crème Soda and Root Beer. These are silly sweet, but super yummy. They have 5.5% alcohol, but you can’t really even tell.
SEAGRAM’S ESCAPE WINE COOLERS
Remember these in college? A light, fruity blend, not too sweet, not to tart, just about right. I like the Wild Berry flavour or the new Tahitian Sunset, with yummy Mango juice. These wine coolers have a lower alcohol content (3.2%) and go perfect with the beach or lounging by the waterfront.
SMIRNOFF ICE
A little bit like Mike’s, but the original flavor is kind of a bubbly lemonade, “Sprite-like” with a kick. (5.5% alcohol). I just saw the new Watermelon Mimosa one that I really want to try now! They also offer Smirnoff Black Label with a higher alcohol content (7%), so make sure you know what you are getting. These too, are easy to down on a hot day.
MIDORI SPLICE
In a tall glass of ice, add: 1 oz Midori Melon Liquor 1 oz. Malibu Rum Fill almost full with Pineapple Juice Top with about 1-2 Tablespoons heavy cream (or whip cream) Garnish with a pineapple wedge and a cherry 1
