LETTER FROM THE OWNERS
Today, We Turn 3!
A little over three years ago I had just finished treatment for breast cancer. I was
working in Wilmington for encore Magazine, where I had worked for almost 20 years.
As I tried to get back to normal, I felt as though I needed something new and different to catapult me back into the real world. I had always had the idea for Southport
Magazine in the back of my mind because I lived in Boiling Spring Lakes. My work was in Wilmington but my life was in Southport. I thought it would be great as I headed toward retirement, to work closer to home.
After much thought, I went to my boss at encore with the idea of Southport Maga-
zine, thinking it would be a future project, you know, down the road. He loved the idea and asked to get it started right away!
In less than 30 days, the first issue of Southport Magazine hit the streets in October
of 2012. Exactly one year later, in October 2013, my husband, Alan, and I purchased Southport Magazine.
Watching Southport Magazine grow out of an idea to what it has become today is
humbling. And I feel like we are just getting started! It has been an honor to serve this community and we look forward to what is to come!
Please join us as we celebrate 3 years at our birthday party on Saturday, October
24th at the Lazy Turtle, oceanfront on Oak Island. SGT ROCK will be performing live, we will have tons of door prizes and cash prizes for best costumes! Thank you so much for your support,
—Alan and Kris Beasley and the entire staff of Southport Magazine

have in the classroom for children who learn differently. “I just can’t believe that a device the size of a piece of paper can make such a difference,” he said. “It gives children hope and the opportunity to know that learning can be fun.” Children with learning disabilities, such as autism, can have trouble focusing in a traditional classroom setting, Peele said. “I believe what we’re doing – we are assisting in the overall fight to help children with disabilities and helping to find ways to make learning easier for them,” he said. The idea for the Local Heroes Chili Cook-Off grew out of the Club’s desire to have an annual signature event, Peele said. The group also wanted it to be a laidback, casual event, and the club members wanted to give the local heroes a chance to see the communities they serve under different circumstances. “We see the Fire Departments,” Peele said,” but we do not see the men behind the scene. This gives them a chance to interact with the community.” Besides the People’s Choice Award, decided by ballot following the tastings, there will also be a Judge’s Award. Previous business winners received a plaque; Fat Andy’s on Long Beach Road proudly displays a winner’s plaque there, Peele said. This year, there’s an added bonus for the commercial winner – a perpetual cup which will be passed from winner to winner each year. Peele said two fire departments in particular have participated every year, the Oak Island Fire Department and the Sup-
The Civitan’s Chili Cook-Off is Saturday, November 14 from 12:30 p.m. until 3 p.m. at the Moose Lodge, 4239 Long Beach Road, on the mainland near Oak Island. The $5 ticket price includes a sampling of all the entries and an automatic entry into a raffle for door prizes. Attendees will get a ballot they can use to judge the contestants’ chili. There will be a bake sale, 50/50 raffle and fire truck tours for the children. There will also be live music entertainment. Southeast Brunswick Civitan Club President and Chili Cook-Off chairman Jonathan Peele said last year, there were a dozen competitors, six in each of two categories. The Chili Cook Off pits local heroes – fire departments, rescue squads, police departments and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary against each other. The grand prize? Bragging rights and the privilege of displaying the winner’s trophy for the coming year. The second category of

contestants features area restaurants, also pursuing bragging rights. The event is a fundraiser for the local chapter of Civitan International. For seven years now, the local chapter has been helping to support the Boys and Girls Home of Lake Wacamaw, Special Olympics and other events in Brunswick County designed to help those with developmental disabilities. The North Carolina District east division of Civitan supports a research program at Duke Child Development Unit on Duke University campus and Civitan International also supports a research facility in Alabama. Most of the proceeds from the event will go toward buying iPads and applications to be used in Exceptional Classrooms in Brunswick County, called the Civitan’s Apple Project. Peele said there are 100 such classrooms and that the club has donated 20 iPads so far. Peele said he thinks it’s hard for people to understand the strong impact an iPad can
ply Volunteer Fire Department. Chief Chris Anselmo from the Oak Island Department and Chief Bailey of the Supply Department have been good supporters of the cook-off, Peele said. There is good-natured competition between all the departments when they compete against each other, he said. Chief Anselmo agreed that the competition between departments is all in good fun. “Winning any contest within the fire department community is cause for bragging rights amongst each other,” Chief Anselmo said. That’s what makes it fun. Unfortunately, fire departments rarely interact together outside of emergency situations so an event like this is a great way for the fire departments to get together in a positive environment.” The Oak Island Fire Department’s entries in the contest have been cooked by different members. Chief Anselmo said Capt. Jose Snapp cooked one year and Lt. Browning made it one year, so the recipe changes. The Department has yet to take first place, but maybe this could be the year. While bragging rights would be great, Chief Anselmo said he’s just glad to be a part of the fundraiser. “We participate because we believe it’s a great cause. The money that is raised helps local schools by purchasing needed supplies such as tablets. As a public service agency, I believe it is important to be involved in these types of events in the community,” the chief said. He said he also appreciates the chance to meet with citizens under relaxed cir-

Chief Anselmo said the “Local Heroes” have had great positive feedback for participating. “People have not only thanked us specifically for this event, but also for the job we do every day,” he said. “We hear it on the street sometimes but not a lot, so to hear it through events like this means a lot. It’s not so important for me to hear it as I’ve been in this business for a long time but it’s awesome when my staff hears it and I see that they truly appreciate the thanks. It defines to them that they really do make a difference and that’s enough for me.” Chief Anselmo also said he really appreciates the Civitan Club for putting the event together every year.
“It’s great fun for a great cause. As firefighters and EMS workers, we typically see people on their worst day,” Chief Anselmo said. It’s great to get involved in community events that start and end in a positive way. Civitan International is an organization of volunteer service clubs around the world, dedicated to helping people in their own communities, according to the organization’s website. “Civitans help wherever the need arises – from collecting food for a homeless shelter, to volunteering at their local retirement home, to building a playground for children with disabilities. Civitans have been helping people since the organization’s founding in 1917, by a group of businessmen determined to make a difference in their community.”

Let’s Turn Southport Pink! And have fun for a great local cause BY: JENNIFER BARNETT
T
his month an estimated 19,320 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S.* Early detection of this disease is paramount in the fight, but just as important, is the support these women receive after diagnosis.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. With that in mind, there is an organization called The Pink Ribbon Project that helps women in our area by providing funds so that those without health insurance or other financial resources, can receive mammography screenings at one of five (5) approved NHRMC regional sites. The Pink Ribbon Project helps more than 1,200 uninsured women each year with mammography screenings as well as funding for any diagnostics that may be required for a suspect result. The Pink Ribbon Project provides comfort during a seemingly surreal time. No one is born with the knowledge of how to handle such a life changing event. Thankfully there are resources available and the Pink Ribbon Project introduces them through their Comfort Bags. The Pink Ribbon Project Comfort Bags are designed to bring comfort to women as they traverse through their cancer journey… from diagnosis to treatment. These bags contain items that range from the practical to the inspirational and are designed to let women know they’re not alone and that they have resources and support in a difficult period. They distribute over 6,500 Comfort Bags to area women as they un*Source: www.breastcancer.org
dergo cancer treatment, distributed by the NHRMC Zimmer Cancer Center and area physician groups. On October 17th from 6:00pm – 9:00pm at Southport Massage, 1306 N Atlantic Ave. in Southport there will be a fundraiser for the NHRMC Pink Ribbon Project. Jason Smith of Southport Massage was kind enough to share the story of his decision to spearhead this worthy cause. My wife, Stacy, is a 3 year breast cancer survivor and even though we were not married during that time in her life we have talked a great deal about the experience. We decided this year our goal was to do something on a bigger than normal scale for a charity and breast cancer awareness seemed to be a fitting cause. Stacy told me that the most useful items she received at her diagnosis was the Pink Ribbon Project bag filled with educational material, day planner, pillow case and eye pillow and even lip balm. She actually still uses the pink satin pillowcase. That’s why we de-

It shows how our community can join together to make a difference. ----Jason Smith Local businesses have been busy donating raffle items and party supplies all month. This outdoor event will have a cash wine bar by Silver Coast Winery and a free dessert bar with treats from local bakeries. The entertainment will be provided by Coastal Carolina Productions “DJ Rock”. It is free to attend and all the proceeds will go to the NHRMC Pink Ribbon Project. There has been a generous outpouring of support and raffle items from the community. Several donations for the raffle are worth more than $500.00! The raffle tickets are only $10.00. Games, Beer, Food & Fun Out On The Farm Greenlands Farm Celebrates its 4th Annual Fall Farm Fest STORY BY: KATHLEEN MCGOWAN
I
t’s wonderful to wake up and enjoy all the farm has to offer. We live off our farm, I guess we ‘live what we sell’ (instead of practice what you preach), but many parts of this farm is a job for us, so you never really get away from work. Good food and drink as a reward does help though! —Maud Kelley, Manager
In case you are not familiar with Greenlands Farm, let’s begin with a brief history. Henry and Heather Burkert purchased the property in 2001 and started selling eggs and goats milk soap, about 4 years ago, out of their landscape architecture firm...which is now their store. In 2013, the Burkert’s daughter, Maud, and her husband, Ryan Kelley, moved from Charlotte with their daughter, Jules, to help grow and work on the farm. Since that time, the farm has grown into a full-circle system known as Homestead Farming. The Kelley family has grown as well to include a son named Rhett. What exactly does Homestead Farming mean? Simply, it means practicing sustainability and self-sufficiency by producing products from and for the farm with skills and techniques that are sensitive to the environment, public health, the surrounding community and the animals living on the farm. Self-sufficiency means to rely only on yourself for food, water and products for daily life. This way of life is not easy…it takes dedication, time and work and there are items and services that the farm cannot
which is used on the farm as well as sold in the farm store. The pigs play a big role in the sustainable farm as well, they eat all the culls (vegetables not deemed perfect for selling), the trimmings from processed vegetables and any food that is past its prime. Nothing is wasted! Sheep can be used for wool and meat and the llama felt is used for teaching purposes only. The ponies and llamas both help out by giving rides, which help support the cost of feeding and caring for all the animals. “I think we all could take more time for each other, furry friends and human friends alike. I always tell our tour group kids that visit the farm, ‘treat these animals the way you would want to be treated. No one likes to be poked, hit, or scared.’ And I feel that’s a good way to interact with humans too. You can’t go wrong with kindness.” said Maud Kelley, Manager FARM FEST 2015 ACTIVITIES: Come on out for plenty of fun and music for the young and old alike. There will be opportunities to meet, learn from and interact with the rescued farm animals and plenty of seasonal activities, pony rides for the kids, llama cart rides for adults and kids, hayride/milking demos will take place throughout the day and a collection of tractors, old and new, will be shared by a few friends of Greenlands Farm CONTESTS : Hot Pepper Eating Contest: $5 online, $6 at festival. Greenlands Farm proudly grows some of the hottest peppers around and will be holding their 3rd annual Hot Pepper Eating Contest. Winner takes half the pot of contest entry fees.
produce or provide on their own so, they must purchase them from outside sources so, the Burkert family depends on donations and fundraisers to keep the admissions and operating costs down. The Fall Farm Fest is one of the biggest fundraising events held and almost all the proceeds from this event go towards helping the animals get through the winter, which is the most expensive time of the year to have farm animals Everything in The Greenlands Farm Store including bread, veggies, creamery, baked goods, soap, canned goods, preserves, honey, cheeses, yogurts, body products, laundry soap and more are grown and made on the farm. The farm’s animals don’t perform as many traditional farm tasks, but many do attribute to the self-sufficient and sustainable lifestyle. All of the farm’s animals are rescues except for the dairy goats, chickens and turkeys. The chickens are not eaten, they lay eggs used for baking, dining and are sold in the farm’s store. The goats are milked and the milk is pasteurized to drink, make yogurt and cheeses for the family. Goat’s milk is also used to make soaps,
SPECIAL GUESTS : Broomtail Brewery, of Wilmington, will be joining Greenlands Farm in a partnership beer, using Greenlands Farm’s lemon drop peppers called “Jus Sayin, Lemon Drop Hop”. The Imperial IPA gets a unique and spicy citrus flavor from the lemon drop peppers. Broomtail is barrel aging this beer and bringing the cask to serve it out of... You don’t want to miss a taste of this specialized and exclusive beer! Other great Broomtail beers will also be served at the Farm Fest along with a collection of fine wines. The Bolivia Volunteer Fire Department will be a big part of the day again for enjoyable and up close communication with the firemen and their big trucks! The volunteer fire department stays involved in the community, does a wonderful job protecting the area and their dedication to Greenlands Farm is priceless. Plus, they’re bringing goodies for all the kids! The Brunswick County Animal Protective Services will be out with an assortment of furry friends for everyone to meet and hopefully take home. Their goals are to create community partnerships to promote responsible pet ownership, decrease the overpopulation of domestic pets through
spay-neuter programs and education and to find every adoptable dog or cat a perfect, loving home. You never know, you may just find your fur-ever friend!
MUSIC: Herb Harton, Wilmington, NC - Herb Harton has become a major part of many farm events. He is a retired motion picture camera operator who now spends his time performing and teaching guitar. He grew up in western NC during the birth of rock & roll, the rebirth of the blues and soaked up all the folk, country, and rhythm and blues songs he could get his hands on. His repertoire is a vast and eclectic mix of thousands of songs performed with a lively spirit and a powerful voice with an extensive range. Herb is often called a one-man band and I’ve been told that he is a walking history book of facts about the songs he performs and the artists who wrote them.
GAMES: Chicken Poo Bingo! Put your money on those droppings while raising money and awareness for the rescued farm animals. Greenlands Farm is a farm animal sanctuary to rescued and donated farm animals used for educating the community on farm animals, rescues, and ownership. Show your support for the animals that provide educational experiences and positive, fulfilling relationship for us all. Chicken Poo Bingo will be played on October 10th and tickets are sold up until 1 hour before the Chicken is released to ‘start the game’. Spectators are encouraged and you don’t have to be present to win!

70 Years of Community Service
Christmas Open House at
Lions Club has a long distinguished history in Southport. BY: AL WILLIS
T
he Southport Lions (We Serve) are celebrating their 70th anniversary in 2015. It was formed in 1945 with the help of Lions Club International sending a representative to Southport from Chicago, IL to help with the organization. As a result of this effort, 22 charter members were recruited and established the Southport Lions Club with E. M. McEachron (insurance adjuster) elected its first President. The charter members included a Baptist and Presbyterian minister, a dentist, a Banker, Lawyers, a druggist, school principal, several businessmen and City employees. Over the last 70 years the Southport Lions have been blessed with fine leadership over 62 presidents and they all have a unique story to tell. They wanted to make the community a better place. They wanted to help people who needed help. To help people with vision impairment and other disabilities and that’s what they did over the last 70 years. Two things occurred in the 1980s that strengthened the Lions Club role in Southport – the display of the American Flags throughout the city and assuming the lead in an annual boat raffle from the Jaycees that had been going since 1962. This changed the club completely from where we were just meeting district and international goals. Now the club is able to go out and help with various projects, and charities. We added another fund raiser in 2000 selling Christmas ornaments that depict scenes
and buildings in Southport. Currently the Club has 51 members, and we are the largest club in our district and have an annual budget of almost $40,000. In keeping with the tradition and history of the International Lions Organization Southport Lions Club’s focus is on eyesight assistance. While we are involved in many other activities to assist our Community The Lions Club partnered with New Hope Clinic (Boiling Springs Lakes) where we established and equipped the vision examination room. This where we screen patients for glasses and identify cataract surgery patients. Our budget this year will pay for 70 exams and glasses. The club has paid for 9 cataract surgeries since inception and has budgeted for 3 this year. The club also does screenings at elementary schools and health fairs. It also recycles glasses and hearing aids, supports Camp Dogwood, a camp for the blind in NC, VIP Fishing Tournament for the vision impaired and the Leader Dog Program. Other major donations go to the Inter church food pantry, kids Christmas for needy families, NC Boys and Girls Home, South Brunswick High School Scholarships and many other organizations.

Classic Car Show

Rolling back into Southport Oct. 9-10 BY NEILL CALDWELL
T
ime for a true-false quiz: 1)The Ford Mustang made its debut in 1964. 2)The Thunderbird, or T-bird, is easily recognizable by its round side windows. 3)In the Beach Boy’s song, the “Little Old Lady from Pasadena” drove a super-stock Dodge. 4) The 1953 Corvette came only in one color: white. 5) The muscle car featured in the movie “Vanishing Point” was a Dodge Challenger. If you answered true to five questions, you sure know your classic cars. If you missed one, it might be time to do some homework. The opportunity for either kind of folks is coming up Oct. 9-10, when the Cape Fear Cruisers Car Club and the City of Southport will host the Second Annual Classic Cars ‘n Rock ‘n Roll Weekend. Classic autos from the 1950s and ’60s will be on display, along with music, a street dance, a vintage dress contest, dance competition and food available for purchase. “Once we launched the classic cars weekend last year, we knew there was no turning back,” said Joni Schinske, assistant
director of Southport Tourism. “People loved it and the smiles on their faces remained long after the cars cruised out of town.” The Cape Fear Cruisers is a Southport-based organization that supports local charities with events like this one. Club president Bill Vann said there was no question about having a second annual event after the success of the first. “It was fantastic and well received by everyone,” said Vann, who owns a 1956 Ford Victoria and a 1972 Olds Cutlass convertible. On Friday, Oct. 9, the event will kick off with a “cruise-in” of cars in downtown Southport Friday from 5:45 p.m. until 9
p.m. The cars will be back on display on Saturday from 10, until 9 p.m. Also on Friday night, there will also be a drive-in movie – “Hollywood Knights” – at Taylor Field (Nash and Rhett streets near the Smithfield Burying Ground) at
dusk and street dancing downtown with classic rock and roll music spinning by DJ Billy V. Saturday’s highlights include a $5 allyou-can-eat pancake breakfast at the Howe Street Fire Station (a new event

SHOWCASE
A Séance Leading to Haunting Fun! Be a witness to the shenanigans BY: JEFFREY STITES
B
runswick Little Theatre is serving up a real treat this Halloween in its performance of the classic Noel Coward comedy Blithe Spirit.
Pictured: Carolyn Stringer, Evelyn Petros, Ted Roupas and Katherine Wooten.
The show, first performed on London’s West End in 1941, tells the story of upper-crust novelist Charles Condomine (Ted Roupas) as he commissions a séance, as entertainment and research for his next book, with the eccentric medium Madame Arcati (Evelyn Petros) in the company of his current wife, Ruth (Carolyn Stringer), his friends Dr. and Mrs. Bradman (Lee Nor-
ris and Elizabeth Flora), and of course the maid, Edith (Brandi Simmons). The séance goes a bit awry as Charles’ first wife, Elvira (Katherine Wooten) materializes but is only seen and heard by Charles. Elvira attempts to torment Charles into dumping her “replacement,” Ruth, only to eventually have Ruth join her in her ghostly shenanigans, leaving the living with double the trouble.
Director Chris Walters is enthralled by the play’s historical setting in 1940s Britain. “The war was on and it was destined to be a horrible next few years. From the Blitz to an upcoming and unthinkable V-2 rocket barrage about to begin, sudden death from the sky was an all too real and pressing truth in everyday life,” Walters said. “Blithe Spirit not only turned thinking about death into a farce, but literally plucked out its stinger and tickled (Noel Coward’s) audiences’ ribs with it as plot device to torment and amuse his on-stage alter-ego, high society writer-at-large, Charles Condomine.” Walters called the cast that brings Blithe Spirit to life “fantastic,” adding, “at first glance we are a mis-matched set of silk spats. Some come highly polished, one with professional experience on a global stage, while others are looking down the performance gun-barrel for the first time.” He said he is impressed with the cast’s ensemble spirit. “From breathing, jousting spouses to befuddled mediums to poltergeists in heels, on stage they all fit together,” he said. Brunswick Little Theatre’s stage will be transformed into a 1940s British country home by Paul Bertelsen, a veteran set designer who has worked professionally on Broadway and taught at Brandeis University. “Paul was actually involved in set design on Blithe Spirit when it was first touring this country. You will see that kind of experience and attention to detail when our lights go up. Our set is nicer than some of the places I’ve lived,” said Walters. Even with the help of a wonderful cast and talented set designer, Blithe Spirit still haunted Walters with some real difficulties. Walters explained, “Having come “across the pond” in the 1940s, Blithe Spirit has some definite challenges for a modern American audience. Even beyond the three-act format, (modern audiences are used to two) many of the references that
would have been instantly recognized by war-torn England aren’t as familiar to us; actors, directors or audiences. How do you tackle that and try to stay faithful to the author’s work?” Walters recognized that comedy only works if audiences get the joke, and that only happens if actors understand the punch line themselves. “The solution we’re using is to take every reference we don’t understand and ferret out the phrase as far back as internet or local World War II family can take us. We bring that to life with the show. It is such a great game that now actors are hunting phrases and places down on their own,” Walters said. Walters invites everyone to get in the spirit, “Come join us for a séance! Dig up some past spirits of your own with Noel Coward, Irving Berlin and the 1940s. You know, when get-togethers were parlor games instead of television, when conversation was a practiced art and while it was still safe to smoke. What better way to spend a late October evening—or matinee—than catching a ghost or two in the English countryside? You won’t even need a passport—just a ticket.” Blithe Spirit will take possession of the Brunswick Little Theatre, 8068 River Road SE, Southport, for two weekends, October 23-25 and Halloween Weekend, October 30-November 1. Friday and Saturday shows are at 7:30 p.m. with Sunday matinees at 3 p.m. All seating is general admission and tickets can be purchased at the Ricky Evans Gallery, 211 N. Howe Street, Southport, or online at www.brunswicklittletheatre.com. Tickets prices are $17 for adults and $12 for students with identification. As long as the shows don’t sell out with advance purchases (although they often do) tickets will also be available at the door. Call the Brunswick Little Theatre at (910) 447-BLT6 (2587) with any questions or for more information.

Owner, Ginger Williams is one of those people who will make you feel good to be around. Always smiling and always positive! And a maestro with the scissors! Here is the story of The Cutting Edge Hair Salon.
Q: HOW LONG HAS THE CUTTING EDGE BEEN IN BUSINESS? TELL US HOW IT CAME TO BE?
A: 27 yrs. ago I married my husband Rusty and moved to this area from Kentucky. The Cutting Edge has been in business for 24 years. A friend, Carol Spicer and I were working together for a few months when we decided to open a place of our own! Carol and I were previously individual shop owners before moving to Southport. Carol and I decided to join forces to open the Cutting Edge. After Carol lost her fight with cancer I became sole owner.
Q: PLEASE EXPLAIN WHAT SERVICES YOU OFFER AT THE CUTTING EDGE?
A: At the cutting edge we offer all types of hair services from weekly sets, for our mature customers, to the new trendy cuts,
coloring, foiling, smoothing or perming services! Our clientele ages are from 5 to 95! We even have a lovely 97 year old lady whom we have had the pleasure of setting and styling for several years. Our shop has been labeled a “Steel Magnolias” type of a shop! We love that, it means our customers are comfortable coming to us and they feel right at home. We enjoy meeting new customers as well as learning from our faithful ones.
Q: WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL SPECIALTY AND CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR STAFF. WHAT DO THEY BRING TO THE CUTTING EDGE?
A: I love coloring, cutting and making people feel good about themselves! Charlotte Williams, from New York, has been working with me for several years. Charlotte enjoys coloring, cutting and is top notch with setting and styling. Brooke Holden, From Southport, is also a great colorist and enjoys making her customers look great on those special occasions, like prom time and weddings. Between the three of us, we can take care of all of your families hair care needs.

CHEERS Hints of Cinnamon, Vanilla & Contentment
VANILLA, PEAR, AND VODKA COCKTAIL
STORY BY:JENNIFER BARNETT | PHOTOS BY: KRIS BEASLEY
INSTRUCTIONS:
I
t’s the time of year when I like to have the taste of my drinks reflect the mood of the season. It was so easy when I lived in the north to add Baileys to my coffee or peppermint Schnapps to my hot chocolate but when you are in the south where the fall temps can easily still be in the 80’s, you need to be a little more creative.
I found some yummy cocktails that give the illusion of autumn. They will help you gear up for the season and take your mind off your growing shopping list and Great Aunt Petunia critiquing your every move in the kitchen! And because I know how my southern girlfriends like
Mix pear juice and vodka in a pitcher or shaker. Split open the vanilla bean, and scrape the seeds into the juice and vodka. Add 1 cup ice, then give it a good shake. Pour into cocktail glasses over more ice and serve with sugared rim. Makes 4 drinks.
HOT APPLE PIE
to spend this time of year; I have picked out one warm drink so you can turn down your AC and put on your favorite sweater, light your fireplace and pretend to watch the leaves change color. Enjoy these little sips of comfort and relax while you still have the time.
CRANBERRY & CINNAMON WHISKEY SOUR
2 cups fresh cranberries 2 cups water 2 cups sugar 2 cinnamon sticks 3/4 cup bourbon or whiskey 1/2 cup lemon juice 1/4 cup orange juice 1/4 cup lime juice Ice cubes & cocktail shaker for mixing
10 ounces apple cider 1 ounce tuaca liqueur whipped cream cinnamon
DIRECTIONS:
Heat up apple cider in mug in microwave or on stove top in saucepan. Add Tuaca and stir. Top with whipped cream and cinnamon.
PUMPKIN PIE IN A GLASS
2 parts Kahlúa Pumpkin Spice 1 part hazelnut liqueur 2.5 parts heavy cream 1 part pumpkin puree ¼ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
DIRECTIONS:
Combine all ingredients in a martini shaker filled with ice. Shake to combine, and then pour into glass. Serves one
SIMPLE SYRUP:
In a medium-sized pot add cranberries, water, sugar, and cinnamon sticks. Heat over a medium flame, and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer, and cook, stirring occasionally, until the cranberries have burst open and can easily be stirred into the syrup, resulting in a smooth consistency. This will take about 10 minutes. Once done, remove syrup from heat. Fit a large bowl with a fine mesh strainer and strain the simple syrup, leaving all of the large chunks and skin behind. Let cool for at least 10 minutes before using.
12 oz (1.5 cups) pear juice 6 oz vodka 1/2 vanilla bean, seeds scraped vanilla sugar, for rim 1 cup ice, plus more to serve over
INSTRUCTIONS:
When ready to make your cocktails, add 3/4 cup simple syrup, whiskey, lemon juice, orange juice, lime juice, and a large handful of ice to a cocktail shaker and shake vigorously for 30 seconds. Divide into 4 glasses and serve at once.

KITCHEN A Tasty Holloween
5 scary-good recipes for young & old alike STORY & PHOTOS BY: KRIS BEASLEY
I
love Halloween! Not because I worship Satan or anything, but because I love its playful spirit. With all its tacky, kitschy ghastliness, it is my favorite holiday. As adults, we tend to take ourselves so serious and Halloween allows us “older folk” a chance to let our hair down or up or out—depending on what costume you choose! Halloween also allows us to play with our food and find creative ways to freak out others with some twisted treats. You can serve these post trick-or-treating and screen multiple movies—See Scene page 39 for suggestions. I hope you will have as much fun as I did making these ghoulish, gourmet goodies.
ZOMBIE MOUTHS INGREDIENTS: •Red and Green Apples •Jelly •Slivered almonds
DIRECTIONS: Slice apples. Take each slice and carefully poke the slivered almonds around the inside of the skin side. Lay one slice down and put about 1 tsp of jelly, towards the back of the slice, away from the skin of the apples. Take another slice and lay on top, with the skin facing forward to form the mouth. Super cute and healthy!
SPIDER COOKIES
EYEBALLS
INGREDIENTS: •Refrigerator Sugar Cookies •Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups •Candy Eyes •Chocolate Decorating Icing
INGREDIENTS: •Fresh Mozzarella Balls •Prosciutto or Ham •Spanish Olives •Salsa or Marinara Sauce
DIRECTIONS: Bake the sugar cookies as directed. As soon as you pull them out of the oven, place the Reese cup upside down in the middle of the cookie. Let cool. Then take chocolate icing and make the legs. Decorate with candyeyes, using icing as glue. Cute and easy!
DIRECTIONS: Wrap prosciutto around mozzarella balls, leaving an opening. Slice olives and place in the center of the opening, as the pupil of the eye. Serve with Salsa or Marinara for dipping.
MONSTER TOES INGREDIENTS: •Refrigerator Sugar Cookies •Whole Almonds
DIRECTIONS: Rollout each sugar cookie in a rope about 4-inches long. Place on your baking sheet. Take whole almonds and place at the tip, pressing into the dough. Bake according to the sugar cookie directions. Let cool and break apart.
HO-HO BATS
INGREDIENTS: •A Package of Ho Ho’s •Fruit Roll ups •Candy Corn •Red gel icing DIRECTIONS:
Unroll a fruit roll up, but be sure to keep the plastic wrap attached. Using a knife or scissors, cut out a wing pattern. Be sure to keep it in one piece. Lay the wings down and place the Ho Ho’s on top, in the middle. Use the candy corn to make ears on the top of the Ho Ho. Press in the secure them. Use a knife to cut the white tips off the candy corn tomake the fangs. And use the orange to make eyes. Use the red gel icing as glue to secure the eyes and fangs.

Live Oak Café
Casual fine dining, not just for special occasions BY: REBECCA JONES | PHOTOS: ANNE MCGOWAN
L
ive Oak Cafe is located in Southport. It is on the left driving into town, the third of the “three sister houses” on Howe Street. Some say, the houses are called the three sisters because they are identical, others say they were built for three sisters- the actual date is unclear, anywhere from 1890-1919, explains owner and Head Chef, Sean Mundy.
Mundy and his wife Jennifer Charron purchased the property Thanksgiving of 2001, and for the next several months, until opening the doors in July of 2002, the renovation and restoration of what was to become the Live Oak Cafe was a full time job. The front of the house became, to use restaurant lingo, “the front of the house” the foyer became the “lobby” and the three rooms became the dining rooms. The biggest being the blue room which can seat 18. The back of the house, which had been added on to three separate times, became the kitchen, prep and storage area. A screened-in porch, with handicap access was added as was a wine garden area for guests; all graced by the presence of the restaurant’s majestic namesake, the large live oak tree, estimated to be between 400 to 500 years old. “This is where my degree came in,” Mundy explains, regarding the transfor-
mation of the old house into a restaurant. Mundy is a NC State graduate with a degree in civil engineering and construction, “which helped when it came to the restaurant, drawing up plans and having a working knowledge.” Jennifer, a Carolina graduate, with a degree in English and Art History, researched period pieces for the restaurant. Even the paint colors are registered historical colors of the Victorian period; brick red, colonial blue, mustard yellow and warm orange, setting off the bead board ceiling and the original pine floors. The art along the walls are reprints of famous artists, all with a food theme, there’s a Dahli, “Bread Loaf” and a Picasso, “Fruit Dish”. The tables and furniture are all period pieces. An antique “knockdown” dresser, which, “is designed to come apart for people traveling across country in wagons,” explains Sean, has been repurposed as a wine cabinet. “The tables are Old En-
glish pub tables that can extend” explains Mundy, giving seating flexibility in small spaces, which is useful for business meetings, corporate events, receptions, and rehearsal dinners. “It really has been a labor of love,” acknowledges Mundy; love that has extended to other family members. For example, Sean’s parent’s antique settee is in the lobby, also a Victorian scene of a couple walking down a lane, comprised of penned dots, belonging to Jennifer’s family hangs above the mantle over what used to be the fireplace and even Sean’s Grandmother contributed by making yarn doilies for the glassware. Sean and Jennifer met working in a restaurant and “I’ve been working in restaurants ever since. I didn’t go to culinary school, but I’ve worked with different chefs, read lots of books, researched and experimented”, says Sean. He describes the menu of the Live Oak Cafe as, “classic creole, which to me, means true French cooking, so a Creole influence with Southern-Low country and Pacific Rim all with a spin.”
Together, with a small staff and Sous Chef, Billy Christenberry who has been with the Live Oak Cafe for ten years, the menu evolves and changes with the seasons. “When it’s possible, I source NC products based on availability; quality meats, steaks, and produce, “In the summer, “lots of local seafood off the coast of NC; trigger, grouper, wahoo,” says Mundy. Off season, “I love cooking game. In the fall, big hearty meals; ostrich, venison, elk from central North Carolina and buffalo outsourced from Asheville.”
The Live Oak Cafe also has an extensive wine selection to pair with the menu. This year Mundy is bringing in more Italian, Spanish and French wines. Desserts are made in house, featuring, crème brûlée, pecan pie, bread pudding, peach crisp and this fall, apple crisps, along with homemade chocolate cakes brought in from The Confectionary. During the off season the Live Oak Cafe will feature a themed night once a month on a Monday thru March. This is a chance “for me to get creative,” says Mundy, “Pairing the wines to the menu, we might do a Greek theme with food and Greek wine, or a Mediterranean theme with wines from Spain and Italy.” In addition to the once a month Monday themed nights, the Live Oak Cafe is known for its annual Mardi Gras celebration. The weekend before Fat Tuesday the restaurant is festive, dressed up with beads and masks. The menu consists of creole dishes such as crawfish étouffée, red beans and rice, known as the Wash Day meal, black-
ened fish fried appetizers and the classic Mardi Gras dessert: Banana’s Foster. The Live Oak Cafe also does its own take on St. Paddy’s Day with smoked trout dip and traditional Shepherd’s Pie. This October, the weekend of the King Mackerel Contest, October 2nd, the Live Oak Cafe is hosting an Octoberfest, featuring German beers and German cuisine like Jäger schnitzel and authentic Laugen Bavarian Pretzels from Munich The Live Oak Cafe serves dinner 5pm until, and is closed Sunday and Monday with the exception of the Monday theme nights. Look for dates and themes on the website: www.liveoakcafenc.com. The restaurant is small, so reservations are recommended but not required.

What is it? It’s the gift that keeps on giving that’s what it is. Small town college student Jay (Maika Monroe) decides that tonight is the night to take her relationship with Hugh (Jake Weary) to the next level. After some fun in the back of his car Jay finds herself strapped to a wheel chair in a deserted parking garage and the newest victim of a fatal curse. And the only way to get rid of said curse it is to pass it to another via intercourse. “If you have sex you will get pregnant and die” – Coach Carr (Mean Girls 2004). We hear you Coach, we hear you. The demon connected to this curse stalks its victims in different forms and creeps up on them in a very eerie manner… but of course… always walking. “It’s very slow, but it’s not dumb.””Hugh. Jay has trouble convincing her friends of this deadly curse but she needs them to help her get rid of this STD (sexually transmitted demon). We did appreciate however that the director and writer seemed to keep the classic horror movie traits; not too much gore, slow walking stalker that always seems to catch up, good low fear triggering music, stupid plot line, ha. All in all we had a really fun time watching this 2014 horror flick.

Recent college graduate Dr. Edward Newgate (Jim Sturgess) accepts a job working at a creepy mental institution. Dr. Edward is excited to learn from the current head doctor but quickly finds that the doctor’s ways of catering to his patient’s sicknesses are eccentric and unconventional. Little does Edward know there has recently been a change of staff and the doctor he is working beside isn’t really the doctors at all. Edward falls in love with one of his patients, Eliza (Kate Beckinsale) and she, reciprocating his attraction, helps Edward figure out just what is going on at Hearthstone. The new staff is quiet happy with the new order of things. The insane taking care of the insane- can this end well? Or will things end up in flames? Muahahaha.
Ten friends decided to go on a getaway vacation to the mountains. These fools decide it is a good idea to travel to a secluded mountain resort with no gas and find themselves stranded and the place completely deserted. With no gas for a return trip they are forced to stay the night and try to figure out how to get help in the morning. Strange things start to occur and they notice that maybe this deserted resort wasn’t deserted for long- food on the table- clothes in the rooms, cleaning products leaving “help me” notes, ahhhh! The friends begin to investigate the place to try and figure out what happened to all the people and one by one they start to vanish! Where do they go? What is going on? All we know is… do not blink- but if you do don’t worry- you still won’t get it.
Do not watch this movie if you enjoy going to haunted houses, it will ruin it for you. “I’m working here as part of my community service”- not something you want to hear from an employee of a haunted house, yikes! Did you know that there are haunted houses other than the ones set up in warehouses and advertised for during the Halloween season? Did you know that people actually die in those haunted houses? Did you know clowns are seriously not funny, like, at all? The Houses October Built is Paranormal Activity meets haunted houses. 5 friends team up and set out in their RV to try and find the underground, blood-curdling legitimate haunted houses across the country for Halloween. Just as their search seems to reach a dead end and they are all over going to cheesy haunted houses two random strangers give them the inside scoop on how to find the rumored Blue Skull haunted house. Just ask for “giggles” they said- it’ll be fun they thought… Strange and disturbing things start happening and it becomes clear as the dirt begins to fall on their caskets that maybe they should of just left well enough alone and not have pissed off the clowns along the way.

HEALTH Lack of Quality Sleep Got You Down? Wake up to a solution!
STORY BY: LESLIE RESCHLEY BSN,RN

ack in the days of black and white TV, I recall an episode on a sitcom that involved snoring and the impact it had on the non-snoring bed partner.
Ahhh, days were simpler then and it was so very funny to watch the antics tried in order to get some sleep! Those of you who suffer from severe snoring or who are bed partners with someone who snores loudly can clearly relate. Loud snoring can however be a health concern to some sufferers especially if it is accompanied by periods of time where no breathing occurs. This is known as Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Obstructive Sleep Apnea is the most common form of a potentially serious medical problem for about 4% of males and 2% of females. This condition of loud snoring and interrupted breathing is often accompanied by feelings of “fatigue or being tired” after a night of rest, morning headaches especially in females, dry mouth or sore throat upon awakening, daytime sleepiness with attention problems to activities and irritability or moodiness.
Risk factors to Sleep Apnea include the following: • Obesity, which increases the risk by 4 times • Neck circumference greater than 17 inches in male and 15 inches in a female • A Narrow airway as a result of genetics or enlarged tonsils/adenoids • Males are 2 times more likely than a female to get sleep apnea • Age-this most typically develops in later life as muscles atrophy • Family History • Smokers are 3 times more likely and associated with inflammation and fluid in upper airways and Complicated by a diagnosis of COPD or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. • Nasal congestion, especially with anatomical issues such as a deviated septum. • Use of Alcohol, sedatives or tranquilizers that relax the throat muscle.

alking up the stairs to Jack and Alice Carpenters home, I knew it was going to be something special. The attention to detail was evident on the exterior of the home by the choice of brick and pavers and the variety of patterns and design.
As I climbed the stairs, my eye would catch whimsical garden features that made me smile. At the top I was greeted by yet another surprise - a hanging day bed that Jack hand-crafted. Two grand double glass doors with a rich wood frames served as entrance to the magical home of the Carpenters. Married 23 years, Jack and Alice make the perfect pair. They purchased their double waterfront lot in St. James in the mid 90‘s, after one of Jack’s co-workers had invited them down to show them where they had bought and would build. “Alice just loved Southport” Jack explains. Originally from Morris
Township in New Jersey, Jack graduated from Harvard and went straight to work for the old Bell System. His career would take him through many changes including a transfer to Chicago where he worked for Illinois Bell. “You had to know the structure of the buildings. I learned the phone business from the ground up.” During this time, Jack became interested in carpentry. And interest that would grow and you can see throughout their home. Jack got transferred back to New Jersey and that is when he met Alice. “Like all things good in my life it was serendipitous” says Jack of their meeting. “I was
in need of a secretary and they assigned Alice to me. She was in their temp pool. She never was a permanent secretary and didn’t want to be because she was raising her boy, who was ten at the time. So from January to almost June she was my secretary and then she notified me that she was going to be off in the summer. I said OK
and then she left.” Alice quickly interjects “It’s just a joke because I was in the temp pool for years and everyone I ever worked for always asked me to stay and tried to convince me to go full-time and I always said, No. This is what I want to do. But he was the ONLY one that didn’t ask me to stay!”

HOMESTYLE “So almost 10 years went by and I didn’t see her”, Jack continues. “And one day I am at the lunch room in a different building and who is in the cafeteria line, but Alice. We started talking and I had gotten divorced and she was going through the one. She was always very bubbly and perky and friendly when we worked together and so that sort of happened from there.” Jack joked, “We had a 10 year lapse and she had a chance to get over me not asking her to go full-time!” A little over a year later, they were married. Which is another funny story but I have been sworn to secrecy. As Jack was finishing up his 38 year career, it was time to begin the build of their home in St. James. “She literally spent about five years prior to the house being built, sketching it out, laying it out, saying what about this? What about that?” And it shows. Everything about PHOTO COURTESY OF YOST AND YOST

the home seems thought out and makes sense. They worked with an engineer and architect named Chet Steen out of Wilmington. “We had an idea of what we wanted and he put it all together for us”, Jack explained. “We wanted the design of the house to showcase the water. So when you walked in the house, you saw the water. Which from almost everywhere - you do.” Alice points to all the windows. “We’ve had a million parties in the house. It’s a great house for a party. We do the bar over there” she points to the office/laundry room just off the main living room. “There are plenty of places for people to sit and to mingle” 48 Southport Magazine / October 2015 / www.SouthportMag.com
I wondered what were some of the features of their home that they really loved and Alice said, “We hear from our family and friends that they love the bring their luggage up in the elevator; rather than carry it up the circle of stairs.” Three of the four bedrooms are located upstairs, which is where all the guest stay. “Everybody loves picking out their own room, they will say ‘This is MY room!’ and they love having a nice big bathroom too!” Each of the three bedrooms upstairs has a private bathroom. And each bedroom is decorated in a certain style. As you walk up the circular stairs, passed the grand piano in the foyer, you are greeted with an open view to the downstairs living area and a sitting
room. A New Jersey embroidered pillow pays homage to their hometown. To the right are two distinctly different bedrooms. The first bedroom is what I describe as the mermaid room. A four poster bed with a crochet bed skirt, bay window and double French doors that lead out to the back deck. Family heirlooms and antiques are speckled throughout. A mermaid with a purple tail sits upon a shelf and a glass ornament with what looked like a tree inside, hangs to left. I wanted to climb in the bed myself and ask for milk and cookies. The next room down, separated by bathrooms is what I call the lighthouse room. Adorned in blues and reds, this room triggers all sorts of childhood memories. Teddy bears sit in mini rocking chairs
and sailboat pillows are the perfect touch to a wood bench. But the bathroom is really something special. A walk up Jacuzzi bath in hand painted, white and black tile is unpredictable and fantastic. An antique vanity had been transformed into a sink, with a black and white design. The gold fixtures against the black, white really pop. And the painted Lighthouse strategically placed on the wall above the tub, really makes you wonder about how each element was carefully thought out. Traveling back down the stairs, you can’t help but notice the fabulous Murano Crystal Chandelier. Something the couple bought while on vacation in Italy and before the house was built. “I like to get
things on vacation” says Alice. Some of their vacation finds include a cuckoo clock

from Heidelberg and an original painting from Guy Buffet from his gallery in Maui. “We were in the gallery and people were saying, did you all pose for that? We had to get it!” Alice laughs. One of Jack’s favorite rooms is his library. Just off the foyer, the floors are antique heart pine and the library itself is all cherry. The ceiling is a carpenters dream - a custom coffered ceiling masterpiece. I wanted to grab a pipe, open a book and talk with an English accent, while in the library. Complete with a fireplace adorned with what looked like a revolutionary war bayonet. Jack and Alice had the help of locals, John and Torrie Dinyovszky, owners of Marsh Point Enterprises, Inc. (pmecabinets.com). “Torrie designed it and John built it!” says Jack. And Alice adds, “And it is really amazing because it is a circular room and how they put the pieces of the puzzle together is incredible.” The master bedroom resides on the main living area to the left of the entryway. Pictures of Jack and Alice’s mother and

father hang on the wall leading into the room. A room fit for a king a queen connects to an even more impressive master
bath. A nautical themed standalone tub with brass and wood handles is perched perfectly in the bay window with plantation shutters. A clear block entry wall leads into the shower and keeps the space light and airy. Just off the master bath a long
hallway, where his and her walk in closets adorn one side and storage closets align the other side. This leads into the laundry room and Alice’s office. The main living room is vast but homey and comfortable. Divided by a double fireplace, both sides allow for enjoyment from most every angle. The windows of the home are truly incredible and allow for spectacular views of the exclusive waterway. Less than 25 homes are located on the waterway in St. James. Alice explains, “This location is really great because we are right by the marina and we can walk over to have lunch or dinner. There are lots of amenities on the water and by the marina.” Jack proudly states, “And this is double lot and we built right in the middle.” Hanging between the windows that look
out to the water is a ships masthead figure. “My Dad was a sea captain and I got this at an antique store,” said Alice. And directly across from that on the opposite wall hangs a carved piece of wood that says, Alice + Jack in a heart with an arrow; a gift from Jack which led to a cute story about another gift from Jack. needed to get her fur coat repaired and was going to a furrier. Jack ask if she would take Alice with her. Jack contacted the furrier beforehand and told him to get Alice to try some furs on while she was there and find out what she liked. Jack says, “I talked to him later and said, “OK what is the verdict? And he said she likes this one and I bought it for her!” Of course, my romantic meter was pegging at 100 plus and I asked if she still had the fur, which she did. And I asked if she would please put in on so I could take a picture, to share with our readers. Alice kindly complied. How sweet! I wondered why they would want to move out of such a phenomenal home; home that seemed to have it all. Hand crafted and built from the ground up by them and Alice simply said, “We want to be able
HOMESTYLE to see the grandchildren more.” Grandparents to five grandchildren whom all live in New Jersey, Alice often drives by herself 12 hours to see them. “They are getting older and are involved in sports. We want to get a place in New Jersey and in Southport. That is plan. But we have to sell this first. One of our granddaughters, who learned to swim in this pool, is a very accomplished swimmer now. So we want to be able to be up there more and see her compete. But our main place will still be in Southport!” All five of their grandchildren learned to swim in their pool. In fact, one of the dogs, Julie swims too! And knows to only swim in the heated hot tub in the winter! I could tell it was bittersweet for the Carpenters. The grandchildren spent much time with them in this home but now as they were getting older and more involved in sports, it was harder for them to visit. The lower level of their home was just as

impressive and fanciful as the other two. You are immediately greeted by a man cave so to speak as you enter the bottom level. Green carpet and a card table take center stage. Jack’s achievements and model airplane collection adorn the walls and shelves. A workout room, just around the corner is the perfect place to get in a quick workout. Just through the door from the man cave is a wine cellar or room. A stained glass grape light fixture hung just above a bar table, provides the perfect place to sample a bottle or two! And of course, a lid from a real wine barrel acquired while traveling lays against the wall. Just beyond the wine room is their home theatre. Yes, home theatre! Seven, leather recliners complete with beverage holders,
raised flooring for the second row and inset lights, just like in a real movie theatre. Jack even sound proofed the walls, wrapped in fabric Alice picked out. All of which can easily be removed if you wanted. The huge flat screen TV sits atop a custom built cabinet that Jack handcrafted. And the surround sound stereo system provides a real movie experience.

I mentioned Jack’s love of carpentry and once you walk in his shop, also located on the bottom floor, you see how great the love! It looked like a high school shop room to me. Many big, woodworking machines, and wood pieces organized by size and type. It was impressive! “I went to local shop classes at night to learn to use the bigger equipment.” explained Jack. “I make stuff for family and friends.” Alice and he collaborated on the coffee table in the main living room. He built the table and Alice designed the mosaic shell tile top. The table is beautiful and their talents are outstanding! Leading out the wood shop is their outside oasis. Just like their interior, the outside does not disappoint! As you step outside, there is a full bath with hand painted white and black tile. Just beyond is an outside kitchen room with wine refrigerator. “When we entertain outside, we keep all the food in here.” Alice points out A custom island is just beyond complete with a gas grill. The pool, where their grandchildren learned to swim is surrounded by a large patio where different tables and swings are strategically placed around the circumference. I imagined burgers on the grill and pool filled with laughing children, floats and of course, Julie the dog!

Beautiful lush green grass leads out to the edge of the waterway. A cute, vine covered arbor signifies the walkway leading to their dock. At the end, a covered gazebo is the perfect place to sit and watch the boats go by and enjoy a cold glass of Chardonnay out of the wine cellar. As we strolled back to the house Alice points out different plants she cultivated through the years. “I love to garden. I am always outside with my big hat on!”
She provided a tip for keeping deer from eating your plants by laying a light, plastic mesh over them. “You can’t even see it and it keeps the deer away.” Spending the early afternoon with Jack and Alice was a real treat. Both are artisans in their own right. And both complement each other perfectly. Alice takes art lesson from Chappy Valente in Wilmington. “I dabble in art. It’s my hobby.” There pieces of her art speckled throughout the
house. An oil painting hangs in the dining room and a mosaic clam shell lays beneath a palm tree outside. As I went through the house, each room, each floor - It was almost like finding a treasure box filled with more treasure boxes. Each room was so different and filled with so many uncommon pieces. Only a
true artist could possibly of brought all of these items together and displayed them so beautifully. Alice has a gift. And while some people find it stressful to build a home and deal with all those decisions, not Alice! “We had so much fun! I can’t wait to do it again! It is my favorite thing to do. I am ready for another adventure!”

The court martial of Fitz John Porter was a major event of the Civil War. Major General Porter was found guilty of disobeying a lawful order, and misconduct in front of the enemy and removed from command based on internal political machinations of the Union. The court martial was later found to be unjust and overturned, and Porter was reinstated in the United States Army. The events leading to the court martial were many, largely involving Porter’s personal and professional dislike for his commander, Major General John Pope, who coincidentally was a personal friend of President Lincoln. Each boat has an assigned starting time with the first boat starting at 1 p.m.. The start/finish line is on the water just off of The Provision Company. There is no entry fee for the Regatta, and following the Regatta, The Provision Company hosts the best costume party of the year for participants and spectators. Spectators should arrive in the Provision Company area at about 12:30 p.m. for a good view of the start.
