Lisa Strazza, says she feels blessed to have the beautiful landscape of the North Carolina coastline to inspire her paintings. Prior to moving to the beautiful village of Southport, Strazza was an accomplished painter in the New York region where she was recognized for her abstract paintings and Hudson Valley landscapes. Lisa Strazza’s bold new Southern portfolio explores all of the color, light, and character of the Carolina coast. She features the low country, local scenery and gardens in an impressionistic and painterly style within her newest work which she calls “Southern Impressionism.” Lisa is the featured artist throughout September at the Ricky Evans Gallery where she is represented. She also teaches art classes at Brunswick Community College and independently in Southport.

Florence Tree Art

Two artists find beauty in dead trees STORY BY AMI BROWN

T

his month marks the one year anniversary of Hurricane Florence that devastated parts of our local area and beyond. Southport residents, Donna and Russel Parisi decided to make beautiful art out of a bad situation, and one year later, these trees look amazing.

With all the torrential rain that poured for days and days, the Parisi’s backyard got flooded, like so many. Three large holly trees in their back yard sat with wet soil for so long, they think the roots probably rotted in the sopping soil. They gave the trees plenty of time to dry out, but they were definitely dead, and not going to produce leaves again. The Parisis did some research, and decided to turn these 3 dead trees into works of art. They first cut back the canopy, for safety reasons, but they left some of the lower branches. They hand scraped all three trees down to a smooth surface. This was extremely time consuming and hard work. The scraping took more than three weeks, but the result was well worth the wait. They chose exterior Sherwin Williams paint to make sure the colors would last. They ended up painting on two coats of each color. The bright greens, blues, teals, purples really stand out against the landscape, but somehow really work. The entire back yard is full of artistic pieces and colorful cushions and more than enough seating areas. This is one entertaining space that makes a statement. They restored salvaged iron and now it makes lovely garden sculptures to back

up the outdoor space. The birdhouses are all over: some have beach cottage themes and all are vibrant and colorful, full of details. Donna and Russel moved to Southport a couple years ago from Woodstock, NY. (Another very artsy community) Russel actually went to the Woodstock music festival in 1969, and still has the jeans he wore to prove it. They are in a large frame along with a photo of him wearing them. Of course they are bell bottoms and full of patches, just like you would have expected. Donna was on the young side for the ‘69 Woodstock, but she did attend the 1994 concert to celebrate the 25 year anniver-

sary. And Russel went to the ‘99 concert along with his 15-year-old son. They are both accomplished artists. Donna worked for years as a sculptor in a doll shop and now she still sculpts and hand paints the birdhouses that Russel makes. And Russel worked with developmental disabled children, and recently retired. He started building birdhouses and he also paints on denim jackets. (Or any other type of material) - See photo to left. They both do a lot of custom work, and you can see their birdhouses on display every Wednesday at the morning market in Franklin Square Park. Their hobby has turned into a real business and they love every minute of it. Russel and Donna have truly artistic spirits and are feeling very home here in Southport. Being from Woodstock, NY they love the weather here and the water. A “Follow your dreams” sign hangs on one of the trees, and this artistic couple lives that every day. To get in touch with these talented artists, visit them on Wednesday mornings at their display table or you can call them on (910) 477-6858.

Peace Day in Park Special day to celebrate peace STORY BY KASS FINCHER

C

oncerned about the lack of a voice for peace, in 2014 several Southport residents chose to observe the International Day of Peace designated by the United Nations to be held each year on the 21st day of September.

The Peace Day Southport committee has grown the celebration each year to include many people from Southport and the surrounding area who welcome the chance to speak for peace through the giving of talents, time and monetary donations. The celebration will be held at Franklin

Square Park on September 21, 2 – 4 p.m. Speakers, music, dancing, arts and crafts for children, and peace educational literature will give participants and attendants an afternoon of “living in peace” and some tools to take peace into the world. Some of the art from the children’s “Art in the Park” held a few weeks earlier will

be displayed in Franklin Square Gallery on Peace Day. With so much unrest throughout the world, it makes sense to participate with our neighbors in our own positive celebration of Peace Day. In the words of John Lennon, “all we are saying, is give peace a chance.” For more information, contact Marjorie Jones, circle44016@att.net. WHAT IS THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE? The International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”) is observed around the world each year on 21 September. Established in 1981

by unanimous United Nations resolution, Peace Day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to Peace above all differences and to contribute to building a Culture of Peace. This is a long established universal website which serves all involved in Peace Day, beginning annually with the 100-day Countdown. This year is particularly significant: It is the 20th Anniversary of the UN Resolution on the Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace. Let us all create Peace Day everyday!

Fishing is all GO for Fall! King Mackerel, Peer Fishing & MAD STORY BY LISA STITES

S

ince 1979, the U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament has brought fishermen near and far together to compete for cash prizes and bragging rights. This year’s Tournament is October 3-5, with the Southport Marina serving as headquarters. Boats can head out from other areas, but the fish weigh-ins happen in Southport.

“We have one of the largest weigh-in crowds of any tournament,” said Karen Sphar, Executive Vice President of the Southport-Oak Island Chamber of Commerce. “Watching the fish offloading from the docks is an in-water boat show,” Sphar said. “Standing along the railing at the Southport Marina and watching the different boats…sizes are from a small skiff to larger 4-engine center console boats, all with hopes of weighing in a winning fish is exciting. Peak time to watch weigh-ins starts two hours before scales close — 3-5 p.m. on Friday and 2-4 p.m. on Saturday.” Weigh-in is highly anticipated, especially as the Tournament draws to a close and there are cash prizes at stake. Crowds gather to watch the fish being unloaded and weighed, and the fishermen and spectators keep a close watch on the leaderboard. There will also be live entertainment with Big House Bands on Thursday, Oct. 3, from 4-7 p.m. and on Saturday, Oct. 5, Island Fever will play from 4:30-7:30 p.m. The Island Eatery food truck will be onsite Saturday as well. The Tournament has an all-cash guaranteed prize structure that is not based on participation numbers. It pays 55 places in its primary prize category including $25,000 for the largest king mackerel. There are more than 40 event sponsors, such as Primary Sponsor Southport Marina, Grand Patron sponsors, BEMC, Wades Jewelers, Wilmington’s Big Talker and Garmin, and 36 more sponsors who add supplementary cash prizes to the event. Registration is open until the end of the day Oct. 2, and costs $340 per boat. Visit https://www.usopenkmt.com/registration/ for a registration form or for more information. Another fishing tournament in Southport is aimed at supporting our active military personnel and their families. September 14 is Military Appreciation Day (MAD) in Southport. During this annual event, military personnel will enjoy a day of fishing out on the water provided by volunteers with boats. While they fish, their families will be entertained at the Southport Marina. After the boats return, there will be a big, family-style picnic for all. MAD events have been organized at various locations in the Carolinas and Virginia since the first event in 2006 at Fort Macon. Since then, the non-profit organization has grown, with chapters in Southport, Morehead City, Tidewater, Virginia and Charleston, South Carolina. For more information

As part of its “Save the Hall, Y’all” campaign, the local non-profit organization is hosting An Art Tour in Four Acts to introduce the public to the building’s past, present, and potential future as a performing arts and community center. Tickets are currently on sale for a fundraising event designed to look and feel like a night out on the town at the imagined new center. Attendees will participate in a two-block walking tour of four downtown Southport homes, each featuring a unique musical act. Appetizers, wine and beer from Southport restaurants and wineries will be served, and all comers will be invited to give feedback on the proposed renovation and programming. The musical acts are as varied as the city

residents who have expressed an interest in “saving the hall” since news of Up Your Arts’ efforts went public earlier this summer. One house on the walking tour will feature a jazz ensemble, the Nick Michaels Trio, comprised of members of the Brunswick County Concert Band. A second house will host seven members of Southport’s Browns Chapel AME Zion men’s choir. Violinist Linda Estep, one of the founding members of Wilmington’s Brierwood Ensemble will perform at a third house. And progressive bluegrass fiddler Will Maxwell rounds out the group at a fourth house. Long before it was Southport City Hall, the now-vacant building, located at Moore

Up Your Arts also plans to dedicate space to be used communally by Brunswick County non-profit organizations, so that they may have a physical presence in Southport. Finally, a small gift shop would feature the work of local artist organization members and those students currently engaged in arts-related instruction at the Brunswick Community College campus in Southport. and Davis streets, was the Historic Brunswick County Courthouse. Southport was called Smithville then and it served as the county seat from 1808 until 1978. Built in the mid 1800s, the structure was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, one of only seventeen antebellum courthouses remaining in North Carolina at the time. The old courthouse served as city hall from 1979 until 2014. Two years later, all municipal operations were relocated when the building was declared unsafe; it has been vacant ever since. The City of Southport is committed to retaining ownership, but no funds are currently budgeted to undertake capital repairs necessary for reuse. Up Your Arts is inspired by the building’s history and its standing in the community, both for its prominent downtown location and for its status as a center of municipal life. The organization has developed a plan to restore the building as an arts-focused community center with a variety of sustain-

ing uses, open to and operating on behalf of city residents and visitors at no cost to taxpayers. The September 20 fundraiser comes in advance of plans by Up Your Arts to present city government officials with a formal proposal for next steps. Given six months time to study the building’s structure and potential for serious renovation, the group would then prepare a comprehensive plan for construction and funding, along with details about future programming and management. In addition to creating a state-of-theart concert venue, and space for visual and performing artists to work, Up Your Arts proposes to renovate the grand hall upstairs for reuse as public meeting chambers for the city’s governing body, as well as provide additional space for weddings and events when the Southport Community Building is booked to capacity. The grand hall is acoustically well suited to support a broad range of performance

Here are the elements I recommend that you include in your programming to ensure your workout improves your health rather than hinder it.

PROGRESSION OR REGRESSION

When starting out, begin with the easiest version of a movement and gradually progress as the challenge diminishes. At first you may progress quite quickly, but don’t rush it. Allow your body the time to adapt and get proficient at engaging the correct muscles. Just as important as knowing when to progress an exercise, you should know it is also ok to regress the exercise if the body is not able to keep up with the demand without compensating (cheating) to complete the movement. Be sure to track your progress during each workout, so you don’t end up doing the same exercise, with the same number of reps, and the same amount of weight for too long. When you can repeatedly meet your goal counts with ease for a specific exercise, this is when to increase the challenge to ensure you keep moving towards your goals. If you have already reached your goals, and you love the exercise you are doing, you can simply maintain your program…as long as it is meeting all the other criteria outlined below.

BALANCED TRAINING

While being able to stand up without feeling unstable is important…this is not the kind of balance I am specifically referring to here. What I am talking about is balance within your body’s joints and musculature. Your workout program should work all planes of motion; front to back, side to side, and rotational. Too often this aspect is neglected, causing imbalances of the musculature around the joint, forcing the

body to have to compensate to function from a bad position. This compensation will ultimately lead to injury.

IDENTIFYING IMBALANCES

While it is important for your workout to address all aspects of movement; it is also important to understand where your current imbalances exist. By performing self assessment tests or working with a professional, you can identify the areas of your body that are weak or under-active needing engagement and strengthening; as well as the areas of the body that are tight or over-active needing stretching or a proper recruitment pattern. This is how you make the workout more specific to you and your individual needs. After identifying these areas, you can ensure your workout will not aggravate these imbalances further, but even better, can actually improve these imbalances. Removing or lessening these imbalances will allow you to move more efficiently and with greater ease.

WARM-UP & COOL-DOWN

While walking on the treadmill for 5 minutes may begin to warm up your core temperature, it really doesn’t do much to warm up the joints and muscles about to be worked. You should always consider the workout about to happen and your personal imbalances. A good warm-up will begin to engage the muscles and mobilize the joints about to be worked. In the same fashion, your cool-down should begin to flush the blood back out of the muscles worked to allow fresh restorative blood to flow back in. With the muscles still warm from the workout, the cool-down is also a great time to work on stretching to increase range of motion in your overactive (tight) muscles.

g l d n

FORM & EXECUTION

To get the most out of each exercise it is important to understand the purpose of the exercise and how is it helping your particular needs. Don’t just include an exercise you saw on YouTube or Instagram because it looked cool, or because you want to look like the person performing the exercise. To ensure the proper execution, you should understand what muscles are being engaged to execute the movement; know where you should feel it and equally important, where you not to feel it. Listen to your body during the exercise, you want to challenge the appropriate muscles not hurt the joint. If you are feeling pain in a joint, most likely your form is off or you need to select a different exercise for your specific needs.

RECOVERY

Last but not least, the time spent recovering from your workout is when the body adapts. Without the necessary recovery time to get stronger, the body will likely keep getting further broken down. To allow this recovery and strengthening to occur you need to get quality sleep, the necessary nutritional building blocks, proper hydration, and enough recovery

time before excessively challenging the same muscles again. The real progress is made between the workouts, not during. A good way to check if you are allowing for adequate recovery is to look at your workout tracking discussed earlier in the article. The next time you perform your workout, check that you are able to meet or exceed your last performance. If the answer is no, you may not have allowed your body the appropriate recovery needed. Remember a good workout regimen is meant to build you up and improve your life, not increase pain or decrease functionality. Consideration and implementation of each of the above elements will greatly improve your chances of getting the most from your workout program. If you have additional questions regarding this month’s article or have a topic you would like to see covered in future articles, please reach out to me via email. CHEERS Just Can It!

The delicious options of canned wines. STORY BY JEFFREY STITES

I

’ve gone all-in lately on the idea of canned beer being just as good, if not better, than bottled beer. This month I’m, taking it a step farther and talking about canned wine.

Yes. Canned wine. It’s great. Trust me on this. I understand that there is more reluctance, more suspicion, of wine in a can than beer. It’s relatively new and wine has a lot of tradition wrapped up in the entire experience. I love tradition, really I do, but sometimes it can hold us back in ways that aren’t at all helpful.

The glass bottle stopped with a natural cork is the tradition, and there isn’t a thing wrong with that. But it can, and has been, improved upon. Artificial corks work just as well and don’t ever dry out. Heck, even screw tops are perfectly reliable and do the cork’s job just as well. Cans, though, are a stretch. We’re leaving the glass behind in favor of aluminum. People fear the taste will be affected, just as they do with canned craft beers. But Bill Coors solved that problem decades ago. Cans today do not impart any flavor to the liquid inside. That’s not to say a wine from a can won’t ever taste metallic. Some cheap reds taste that way, but they taste like that from a glass bottle as well. Just buy decent wine and you’ll be fine. Cans are air-tight and light-proof. They are easily portable and chill quickly. They can be recycled much more cheaply and easily than glass as well. And you can take them to the beach, on the boat or anywhere. It’s time to get over your hang-ups and at least give wine in can a try. Now, a twelve ounce can is about two and half glasses of wine, so understand that before you think of them as “single-serve” containers. Or, hey, that might be a single serving for you, I’m not judging, just making you aware. Canned wine is sold by the single can, mostly. Expect to pay from $6-10 for a can, which is reasonable given each can is about a half bottle. I was a savvy shopper and found three to try for you that were on sale for anywhere from $2.89 to $5.39 each. Here are my findings:

18 Southport Magazine /SEPTEMBER 2019 / www.SouthportMag.com

CRAFTERS UNION VINTAGE 2017 DARING AND ELEGANT RED BLEND Crafters Union has been canning at least some of their wine since 2014, so they know what they’re doing. Yes, wine snobs, I have a red blend, deal with it. It’s actually very tasty. It’s deep, dark red and not sweet at all, but without the tannins that make me reach for the Tums. I’m loving this, so this can is going to be one single serving. CRAFTERS UNION VINTAGE 2017 GRACE AND DELICACY ROSE’ Yes, it’s another Crafters Union. They were on BOGO, ok? I’m not much of a rose’ guy, but they are all the rage right now, so I thought I’d give the style another try. I’m really glad I did. I’m sure it helps that I’m eating a chicken

rice casserole while I drink this, but it’s tasting wonderful. There is no metallic aftertaste at all, and it wasn’t a matter of it being killed by the red’s stronger flavors. This is light and refreshing, but not too sweet. Highly recommended.

CUPCAKE VINEYARDS SAUVIGNON BLANC The previous wines were products of California, so I wanted to get a little international flavor into the mix. Cupcake hails from the island nation of New Zealand, home of many fine wines. This sauvignon blanc doesn’t disappoint one bit. It’s dry and refreshing and yet another wine that argues for the one-can-one-serving idea. I can see enjoying this on the beach on a hot summer day, but for now I’ll enjoy it inside on a hot, stormy August night. Cheers!

Local Art Classes

Artist and creative students step out of their comfort zone.

Make us your destination

STORY BY AMI BROWN

A

for Home Furnishings

s a practicing artist, I am always exploring techniques and trying new things. That’s what I love to do. And when I attended the packed out open house and student exhibitions at BCC on Lord Street this summer in Southport, I was inspired to take a class. A warm glass class to be exact.

When I saw the instructor melting glass straws to form a bead, over a flaming torch, I knew it was something that I wanted to try. Although I have played with hand sculpting clay, I’ve also always wanted to try the wheel too - maybe another class, another day. I signed up for Niki Hildebrand’s glass class that started the last week of August. I’ve only attended the first class and boy am I glad I did. BCC in Southport offers a huge variety of creative classes for all levels. From beginners to experts, there is really something for everyone. So much of our community consists of retired professionals, I can easily see that it’s never too late to follow a long forgotten dream or rediscover that youthful hobby, or just try something you’ve always wanted to do.

For me, it was a hard decision. At the open house I saw so many fun classes with their displays of student works - I was pleasantly surprised and impressed. I was not planning to sign up for a class, but went with fellow artists to support several of my creative friends. There was also an awesome stained glass window class, where you design and plan out a custom stained glass window. You cut the glass, and weld or solder in the borders to create a one-of-a-kind piece of art. This looks like an amazing project, and I definitely could see myself having a ball doing this too. Another option for me - silversmithing. Yes, making jewelry and objects out of silver. I didn’t get to see a demo, but the end products were stunning. I only wear silver jewelry, so I can see myself doing this class in the future as well.

There was another glass class that I considered - the mosaic class. The exhibition of these works were also incredible. Broken pieces of just about any materials, including glass, ceramic, tiles and lots of other objects like shells, beads, and memorabilia were utilized in some pretty unique artworks. Some of them functional, but mostly sculptural and artistic pieces were on display. If you have a creative streak, but are not interested in these hands-on classes, the school also offers creative writing classes, music, and even song-writing. I encourage you to step out and try it out. Do something new, something you’ve never tried…. BCC may just offer your dream hobby class or second career opportunity.

Linear Expressionism Artist Greta Swaim paints with style STORY AND PHOTOS BY CARLA EDSTROM

L

arge, bright, cheerful are the words that Canadian born Linear Expressionist Greta Swaim uses to describes her recent abstract style paintings. And I agree! When I look at her paintings, I am drawn into the bright, bold happiness of her work. My eyes follow the lines into the canvas, drawing me inside. Many of her paintings are on huge canvases, and I feel as if I could walk right into them. She has an amazing perception of line and color, and an instinctive ability to place them on the canvas in the perfect spot.

The visual language of her work speaks loudly when she connects the lines with the color and movements on the canvas. Swaim describes Linear Expressionism, “Primarily utilizing the figurative shorthand of line and coupling it with brilliant color and frequently archetypal images, striving to resolve ancient art controversies by synthesizing form, emotionalism and consciousness of spirit.” Swaim is connected very closely with the muse that directs her art. “The painting draws me in like a magnet,” she said. “I paint every day, many days

I spend 12 hours. It is my obsession, my love, and my life,” said Swaim. “Many things inspire me; a sunrise, a sunset, the ocean, a book, a poem, a piece of classical music. I like to paint while listening to 18-century classical counterpoint music. My second to the last piece was my latest and very thought-provoking. It is called Journey of the Soul. The next one after that is bright, cheerful and red. It’s called Art and the Fugue in C Major. It is my homage to JS Bach.” Greta said that the most challenging part of her work is “having enough time with the piece. For it to tell me I am finished and sign it.” Swaim attended the University of Northern Arizona and the Flagstaff Vancouver Art Institute with a Vancouver Art Museum scholarship. And she took continuing education for two years online with UNA in Flagstaff. Like most artists, workshops are at the core of their work. “I took two workshops a year for over 20 years since moving here. Even if you just learn one thing or relearn one thing it is worth it,” she said. “I took a workshop back in the early ‘90s With Carol Barnes and she introduced me to acrylics and I never looked back. We only used three colors; blue, red, yellow and then black and white. I never really did much in watercolors again,” she said. “I usually start with a small study on paper to establish my composition, color values and some details, although I have on

many occasions just started directly on a canvas or watercolor paper,” explains Swaim. Swaim sometimes initials her work in all four corners and then signs the

back, which gives the viewer a choice of which way to view the painting. “All canvases are either gallery-wrapped, giving a three-dimensional effect to the piece, or are framed,” said Swaim.

“My favorite medium is acrylics. They are amazing! You can treat them like watercolor paints, you can treat them like oils. You can combine them with whatever. Glaze them with whatever. Combine them with water-based oils,” she said. “My technique varies depending on my mood, however the first thing I always do is get rid of that intimidating white of the canvas.” Although she has received best in show awards and has been featured in many one-woman shows, one of her greatest accomplishments to date was having her work featured in Time Square. “I was in Lincoln Center in Manhattan for about a month in 2014, and my work was projected on billboards and buildings in Manhattan’s Time Square. I am in the collections of art connoisseurs in Canada, The Unit-

ed Kingdom, USA, Iran, Mexico and many more. Doctors without Borders co-sponsored an international how a few years back and I won Best in Show with my piece called United Vision. It toured Central America, Canada, and the USA,” she said. Always a creative soul, Swaim likes to write poetry when it’s quiet. The poetry that Swaim writes fits beautifully into her art form. “She works without a score improvising as she goes... in an intuitive stream of consciousness that leaves shapes and ideas to suggest themselves and are open to interpretation.” You can see more of her amazing work at Franklin Square Gallery Southport. You can reach her through her website http://gretaswaim.com/ or by email gretaswaim@ yahoo.com.

Artistic Fruit Ideas

Simple designs to wow at dinner parties STORY BY AMI BROWN

W

e all end up going to parties where we need to bring a side dish, a salad or dessert. I try not to run by the store on the way to pick up my contribution. I love eating home cooked dishes, and that’s what I‘d like to do every time. I do get tired of the same old same old dishes though. Why not do something fun and entertaining to really stand out and taste delicious? I found these cute easy ideas to make your next party side a real show-stopper.

Turn deviled eggs into little chicks coming out of their shells. Simply cut boiled eggs across like the photo and fill. Use a small triangle carrot sliver for a beak and place two small raisins for eyes. Use shredded lettuce as a base, or nesting material for color.

Top your favorite muffin or cupcake with a simple butterfly made from strawberries. Cut strawberry across first, the slice down the middle, but not all the way through, then open up to form butterfly. These are almost too pretty to eat, almost. These dolphin banana fruit cups are just so simple but adorable. Cut bananas in half and slice the ends to form a mouth. Use a pen to make an eye and place a blueberry or grape in the mouth to hold it open.

This is a cute and easy watermelon idea - turn it into a grill with skewered fruit inside. Scoop out watermelon and use celery for legs and another one through the back to hold the lid on. Fill with your favorite fruit choices. 26 Southport Magazine /SEPTEMBER 2019 / www.SouthportMag.com

Meet Bobbie Crider

I began my journey as a healer in 2000 when I became massage therapist, and then in 2003 I became a registered nurse, as I was interested in more of a medical background to further assist in healing. I have always wanted to help others since my teen years and have enjoyed my 16-year journey as a nurse, but also pursued spiritual healing as part of my personal journey.

In 2012, I trained at the Four winds society in shamanic energy healing which started me on a five-year journey into South American plant medicine. I traveled to peru and Mexico and worked with shamans during intense healing retreats that began changing who I was. I learned to let go of my stories that kept me trapped into emotional turmoil that no longer served me. I also studied nutrition and became a certified raw vegan chef that cleaned and healed my physical body as I was clearing out my spiritual bodies. As I cleared debris from my energetic fields my spiritual gifts slowly began to emerge. I then spent some time in India studying ayurvedic medicine, meditation, and kundalini yoga. I returned from India with a desire to continue to study energy medicine. I began to study reiki and eventually became a reiki master along with being attuned to the akashic records, which has further facilitated my gifts of clairvoyance that has greatly assisted me with client healing in my reiki sessions along with personal growth. My mission on earth during this incarnation is to heal the collective while spreading love and light during this wonderful time of ascension for humankind. I assist clients to come into their full power and do the necessary cleansing and clearing work needed for spiritual development. My life has been dedicated to assisting others along their healing journey and I am grateful every day for that privilege.

HISTORY Old School Style

A History Lesson on Public Education STORY BY KASS FINCHER

W

hat we take for granted today as public education in this country had its beginnings in the original thirteen colonies. Over the next several centuries, the goals in educating our children changed and evolved.

These are eleven facts cited by americanboard.org, illuminating the history of American public education. 1. The first schools in the 13 colonies opened in the 17th century. The Boston Latin School was the first public school opened in the United States, in 1635. To this day, it remains the nation’s oldest public school. 2. Early public schools in the United States did not focus on academics like math or reading. Instead they taught the virtues of family, religion, and community. 3. Girls were usually taught how to read but not how to write in early America. 4. By the mid-19th century, academ-

ics became the sole responsibility of public schools. 5. In the South, public schools were not common during the 1600s and the early 1700s. Affluent families paid private tutors to educate their children. 6. Public schooling in the South was not widespread until the Reconstruction Era after the American Civil War. 7. Common schools emerged in the 18th century. These schools educated students of all ages in one room with one teacher. Students did not attend these schools for free. Parents paid tuition, provided housing for the schoolteacher, or contributed other commodities in exchange for their children being allowed to attend the school.

8. By 1900, 31 states had compulsory school attendance for students from ages 8-14. By 1918, every state required students to complete elementary school. 9. The idea of a progressive education, educating the child to reach his full potential and actively promoting and participating in a democratic society, began in the late 1800s and became widespread by the 1930s. John Dewey was the founder of this movement. 10. Through the 1960s, the United States had a racially segregated system of schools. This was despite the 1954 Brown vs. Board Supreme Court

ruling. By the late 1970s segregated schooling in the United States wa eliminated.

11. In 2001, the United States en tered its current era of education ac countability/reform with the institution of the No Child Left Behind law. In 2015, the Every Student Succeeds Ac replaced No Child Left Behind.

We know our public school system is not perfect; differences still exis that enable some students to succeed more easily than others. However, we should all thank the teachers every day who strive to help our children reach their full potential and grow up to be happy and productive adults.

SAVOR Head to the Office Coffee, wine and more STORY BY KASS FINCHER

W

hen owner Rob Warner opened his Boiling Spring Lakes coffee and wine bar in February 2017, there was no question what the name should be. “It had been my mother’s real estate office – Lake Shore Realty – and it’s basically an office building,” he says. “It just made sense to name it ‘the Office.’”

Having operated there for 30 years as his family’s business, Warner wanted to keep the layout intact with the individual spaces as he developed his concept. “My dad actually had talked about putting it up for sale,” he explains. “But I had this idea for a coffee shop since the area didn’t have one. My dad was opposed at first because he was thinking it would be a din-

er type thing. I showed him what modern coffee shops were like – people come in, stay awhile, have coffee, meet friends or business associates. I did a year’s worth of research and put together a business plan. I worked with Crimson Cup, a company out of Ohio that does consulting; they help small coffee shops open and operate. They set up the kitchen and designed the layout so my plumber and electrician knew where everything needed to go.” The successful relationship is ongoing, as the Crimson Cup also supplies Warner’s coffee products today. “They have really good coffee,” he relates. “They won ‘Roaster of the Year’ from Roast Magazine in 2016. They’ve been good to us, so I’m happy to stay with them.” Originally Warner’s plan was to just open a coffee shop; an interesting encounter in Wilmington made him think differently. “I used to go up to Red Bank Wine at Mayfaire and talk to them for hours about their business,” he says. “I was in there one day and two ladies came in with coffee cups from Starbucks next door, and the light bulb went off. That’s when I thought I could put what I’d learned from their wine business to do wine and craft beer.” The concept made sense – coffee sales in the morning turn into wine and beer sales in the afternoon and evening. And if you’re hungry the Office offers a variety of wraps and quesadillas. “All the recipes are ours; our most popular wrap is probably the California turkey club wrap,” Warner says. “We just added a new item that was suggested by our assistant manager – the Denver omelette wrap. We also recently introduced the ‘Pizzadilla’ – a new quesadilla – which is already very popular. We also have homemade pastries from a local baker friend of mine. We’re his only customer; he makes wonderful cinnamon rolls, carrot cakes, chocolate cakes, and

particularly the teachers and high school students at South Brunswick. “They stop in on the way to school; the business has grown so much we will need two barristas in the mornings this year,” he explains. “In the past, the months of June, July and August were our three worst months because we were so dependent on the school. But this year we’re noticing more tourists coming in on their way to Oak Island, Southport and Bald Head. That’s going to help us grow throughout the year.” Warner grew up in Boiling Spring Lakes and has been in and out of the restaurant business since high school, when he started as an assistant manager at McDonald’s in Southport. Later he worked as a bartender, manager and sommelier at the Shoals

now peaches and cream scones – a great selection with your morning coffee.” The Office offers 70-90 different wines. “We try to keep a good selection of varietals,” he says. “Sometimes people request something and we will get that for them. One of my more popular red wines was a suggestion from a customer – the Honoro Vera Grenacha from Spain.” The shop also does regular free wine and beer tastings every other Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. with three wines, three beers and live entertainment. Since its opening, the Office has enjoyed regular support from local residents,

Club in Bald Head. Like other long-time residents in the area, he’s seen the growth – and sometimes challenges – that impact his community. During hurricane Florence, Warner rode out the storm sleeping in his lobby. After the storm passed, he opened up the restaurant and gave out free iced coffee and lattes. The Red Cross and other community organizations used the Office’s parking lot to stage their services. The city of Boiling Spring Lakes actually used Warner’s business to get out information to the community, Warner says, “because people were looking at our Facebook page more than theirs.” That community orientation is evident in the events the Office sponsors. On the first Saturday of the month, weather permitting, they have an outdoor market on the side yard, offering local handmade artisan crafts, as well as fresh produce and baked goods. Last year, one of their customers asked to collect school supplies there for the elementary school in Bolivia. “They were having to come twice per day to pick up because we had so much,” says Warner. l“This year they’re using a bigger box.” p Some of their events are just for fun. s“Once a month we do a video game tour-

nament,” says Warner. Kids and adults – all sorts of people come and play. It’s really a fun night. Matt, our assistant manager sets up the giant TV and game consoles. There’s no charge to get in, but they can win a $25 gift certificate. We also have a stack of board games people can enjoy playing.” Along with general manager Asheley Young and their staff of seven, Warner seeks to provide a relaxed environment that can have multiple functions. There’s a conference room that community groups can use and a separate office space that can be reserved. “We have tutors that use it now; we don’t charge for it,” he relates. “We have so many people wanting to use it now that they have to reserve it. Coming from a real estate background, I also think this would be a great place for realtors to meet clients.” When asked what he would like to share with those who haven’t yet been to the Office, Warner did not hesitate. “For those who are not familiar with us, we are very community oriented,” he emphasized. “We’re part of it. As an example, we have no political affiliation, but as a service to

the community, I asked the local candidates for office to come here for a meet and greet with our residents. We’ve already had a couple of candidates schedule those events – it’s something helpful for the community.” Not just a coffee and wine bar, the Office is definitely a gathering spot for good food, drink and conversation. Join your neighbors there soon.

laying music professionally is a life-long dream of many musicians, but most never get to fully realize until later in life if ever. They choose to work jobs that can consistently pay the bills and raise a family. Such is the case of my friend Ronnie Weinstein, or Dr. Ronnie as he is affectionately called by his friends.

Ronnie is a multi-talented, semi-retired Chiropractor and beloved keyboardist around town. I cannot say enough about what a great friend he is and how much the Southport area music community loves and appreciates him. His energy and enthusiasm along with his pure love for playing music are infectious. “I love the

song. I love collaboration and synergy. I love when the whole is greater than the sum of parts,” said Ronnie. Although Ronnie was born in the Bronx, he found his way South in 1978 when he attended Life University in Marietta, GA and received his Doctor of Chiropractic degree. After 13 years of private practice there, he moved his life and practice to Virginia for 21 years. “In 2014, the migration continued to what will definitely be my final stop, my home in the Southport/Oak Island area,” he said. “My wife, Beverly (nicknamed Spider) attended Southport High School, the year it burnt down during finals (she’s not talking)! Her family built a home on Oak Island, which is now our home. And, it includes our version of Daryl’s House, only we call it R&B’s House; a studio where all of my musician friends can come and jam.” American homes in the ’60s were filled with music from records on the turntable, and Ronnie’s was no different. “As a child, there was always music in the air. The phonograph spun my dad’s favorites such as Sarah Vaughn, Nat King Cole, Harry Belafonte, and the big swing and Latin bands. I recall my Nana holding me in her arms and dancing and singing The Andrews Sisters songs to me,” said Ronnie. “Having an older brother and sister exposed me to a lot of things ahead of my time. Music of the 60’s being one of them. They took me to many concerts; Richie Havens, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan and the Band, even John Lee Hooker, and Muddy Waters,” he said. “E.J. Korvette was a small department store that had incredible album sales each Monday. Each week we would go. That was my candy.” The first song he learned at age 10 was a Rolling Stones song called “As Tears Go By.” “My first keyboard was an organ,” Ronnie explained. “A Magnus Model 300. It had two octaves and 6 buttons for chords. The next organ, a dual manual with foot pedals, Wurlitzer. That is what I cut

my teeth on,” he said. “My first gig was at age 13 in a mall for an organ/piano retailer. I played the organ for a couple of hours. My pay was the Beatles, “White Album” songbook,” he said. “I have been a closet musician for most of my life. I’ve played publicly through high school and college, but after that, it was just me, my music room and my guitar or keyboard with my vocals,” he said. “Currently, I have five keyboards; two Nords, two Yamahas and a classic Ensoniq.” The pure love of music is evident with Ronnie whether it’s playing at an open mic, watching him perform with a band, or just jamming with him in his studio. “Victor Wooten’s book, The Music Lesson is THE textbook for musicians. A must read. He writes about the concepts of space and time,” said Ronnie. “I videotape nearly every performance. This is my learning tool! I listen to myself play and with selftalk commentary, I tell myself, ‘Shut-up already!’ ... ‘Again ... really?’ ... ‘Ooh, that was nice. Try to remember that one.’ Wooten writes, ‘Life is a lot like Music. You’ve got to put some rest in there.’ I love space. I love to let things breathe,” Ronnie explained. “Lastly, is the concept of dynamics. Wooten writes ‘Most people play louder to get someone’s attention, but getting quieter can stop a bull from charging.’ Yin & Yang when it comes to the song is essential; loud and soft, fast and slow ... yes!” Ronnie is a natural at performing and it’s hard to believe that he is fairly new to it. “I went to hear this guitar player, Guy Phillips, with the Christine Martinez Band, and he

was awesome! Then I met Dennis Walton while he was hosting a jam. He’s another incredible guitarist. I started playing my acoustic and singing a few songs and then the band joined in. After a couple of tunes, Guy Phillips walked in, then walked out and returned with his Les Paul and amp. For the next hour, I was fronting a band with Dennis Walton and Guy Phillips, while playing guitar. I started showing up at jams with my keyboard. Guy asked me to sit in with Christine, and then Dennis asked me to sit in with him. That led to also playing with Rev and the NC Blues Kings,” he said. Ronnie has been influenced musically by many great musicians, from Gene Harris, Diana Krall, and Dr. John, to name a few. “On the local scene, we have my mentor, Al DiMarco and my very good friend Spence Hayden. Now, these guys can play, and they both make me nervous when they show up at my gigs,” said Ronnie. Ronnie is currently playing with a few different bands and groups in town including the Christine Martinez Band and Dennis Walton Band, and I often tease him that he is overexposed. “The word overexposed certainly bears a negative connotation, and I get ribbed about it constantly. I aspired to become a professional since childhood. As they say, God’s delays are not God’s denials,” he said. “With solo gigs, combined with all of the other projects, I have nearly played over 400 gigs in the past 4 years. Who in their right mind would pass on all of those incredible opportunities; playing with such talented musicians? Overexposed? No. Ubiquitous? Most definitely.”

Poetry in Motion

Brunswick Little Theatre Resumes Open Night Poetry Readings STORY BY AMI BROWN

P

oets in Brunswick County now have a forum in the Brunswick Little Theatre. Open Poetry Night returns to allow poets and rising poets to perform their creative writing. This open night for poetry is the perfect venue to gain confidence with a receptive audience, share your innermost thoughts, or funny quips. The theatre held open poetry nights in the past that were very well received and decided to bring back the poets again. A small group of poets met on Friday, June 7, at Southport’s Brunswick Little Theatre’s Open Mic Poetry Reading to read and shared some of their original works. Seen reading in the photo one of her original poems is Rosemary Harrington. The next Open Mic will be held on

Friday, September 6 at 7:30 p.m., in classroom 2B at Brunswick Little Theatre at 8086 River Road, Southport, NC 28461. The theater will be holding regular poetry readings and more open poetry nights. So if you are a poet, or just love to hear the spoken word, please come out and be inspired by these creative writers. For questions call Ken Greenman at 910368- 3922. For questions,

Rosemary Harrington. In attendance (L to R) is Ken Greenman, Ken Harrington and Steve Pettman.jpeg

Did you know... Poetry as an art form predates written text. The earliest poetry is believed to have been recited or sung, employed as a way of remembering oral history, genealogy, and law. Poetry is of-

ten closely related to musical traditions, and the earliest poetry exists in the form of hymns and other types of song such as chants. As such, poetry is a verbal art.

Q: My company has taken on some big projects lately and we’re struggling to effectively manage them. Can you help?

A: Here are 6 items to focus on whenever embarking on any new project.

—Ronald P. from Southport • Define your goal and get buy-in from all project team members. As you do this, you will want to determine each team member’s role and responsibilities. You should also consider how the project will affect your company and how you’ll measure the project’s impact. • Determine the project deliverables. What key tasks do team members need to accomplish to move the project along the path to completion? You’ll also need to identify which deliverables depend on other deliverables, so you can establish a timeline that puts tasks in a logical order. • List the resources you will need. Assess what you will need regarding budget, person-hours and tools to complete the project. • Set a timeline and identify milestones to mark your progress.

In your timeline, identify interim goals (“milestones”) that can serve as major landmarks along the way. As the project progresses, your ability to reach milestones will help you know if you’ll need to adjust your scope, budget or expectations. Milestones also help boost morale as they help project team members see the progress they’ve made. • Define the collaborative process. Determine how often your team members will meet as a group to report their progress and share any challenges that might prevent them from fulfilling their deadlines. • Select a tool to help you stay organized and keep all project documentation in a single place accessible to all team members. A variety of online tools exist that can help you manage projects, including Trello, Evernote, Asana, Dropbox, and Google Drive.
