LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Lilies, Tulips and Daffodils! Spring is nearly here, my favorite time of year. The season of new life, warmer weather, flowers blooming and birds singing. I found some interesting facts about Spring I thought you might like. Did you know….. The first Spring flowers are typically lilacs, irises, lilies, tulips, daffodils, and dandelions. Honeybees are more likely to swarm during the Spring. They swarm as a way to start new colonies from successful ones. Surprisingly, swarming honeybees are usually very docile and the most friendly they will ever be all year. Tornadoes are most common in the Spring and least common in Winter. Children grow faster in the Spring than during other times of the year. According to the National Association of Realtors, Spring is the most popular season to sell or buy a house. Buyers are usually hesitant to move during the Winter

when the weather is colder and kids are in school. So, while there are lots of houses to choose from in the Spring, property prices are usually at their highest. During the Spring, birds are more vocal as they sing to attract mates and warn away rivals. While the Spring equinox typically occurs on March 20 or 21, meteorological Spring begins on March 1, when average temperatures increase by 10 degrees or more over the month. Don’t forget to spring forward with your clocks on Sunday, March 12th when Daylight Savings Time starts. I know we lose an hour that first Monday morning, but we gain those long lighted evenings, perfect for watching the sunset over the water. We would also love to include fun photos of you enjoying the community and Spring activities in our Spotting section, so send them in! editor@southportmag.com —Ami Brown, Editor

Ben Stewart of Stewarts Hardware

It’s that time of year again: The bulbs planted in the fall are popping their heads out of the soil, everyone is getting ready for flip-flop weather and the gossip around town is about which business has the best wine selection, the trustiest mechanic, best side dish or even the trendiest socks. If you’re wondering where to go to spruce up your house for spring, look no further than Stewarts Hardware—winner of the Best Garden Store. Check out the other Maggie winners starting with Notable People and Personalities on page 7.

OOPS! CORRECTION: In the February issue please note that the photos credited as “Photo by Kelley Deal” should have been credited as “Kelley Deal Photography”. CURRENTS The Maggies are Here! We’ve been gearing up all year to, once again, highlight the local businesses of this special region.

W

hat an exciting issue! South Brunswick County offers some of the greatest little gift shops, art galleries, home décor, antiques, fashion, souvenirs, wine & beer, specialty shops and of course seafood, local cuisine and award-winning restaurants. Our beaches and waterfronts are our hidden gems and a little slice of paradise. The Maggies are our way of listening to the reader, hearing your voice and recognizing these amazing businesses for what they bring to our community. It’s a fun way to spread cheer and gratitude while featuring what makes our local businesses and community special. Each year we change up the questions in our Maggie Survey. This way it’s not boring or repetitive from the previous years. We listen to you too! We’ve had some great suggestions over the past few years and want to make sure we deliver what you want – our reader. I know this year’s survey was a little long… And next year we will take that into consideration.

We also don’t expect you to answer every question either; I mean not everyone eats onion rings…right? We hope you love this issue as it’s full of photos of our winners, and lots of great information about our locals. I know you’ll learn something interesting about the area as you read through the Maggie results. And as always, if you have any suggestions for next year’s Maggies, a question you’ve been dying to ask, or just a friendly comment, send them to me! editor@southportmag.com I promise to read every email and make a note for planning our upcoming issues. You are the reason we are here and we like it that way!

Get your mac and cheese fix at The Bar-B-Que House winner of the Most Delicious Side Dish.

Amanda Canby, Bar Manager at Ports of Call, showcases The Negroni, winner of Most Exotic Cocktail.

New businesses are springing up all over, but the one that’s the best in our area is Southport Cheese Shoppe, winner of Best New Business.

Don’t stress over a bad battery or replacing your own spark plugs. Just call Billy Owens with Brown James E Auto Sales & Service, winner of Most Trustworthy Mechanic, and get the job done right.

Thumbs up for the best place to get organic soaps and lotions, Lantana’s Gallery and Fine Gifts.

Physical touch is powerful. In infancy, it is the first sense to develop as a parent cuddles and caresses their newborn in their arms; often taking a picture of the first wrap of that tiny fist around their finger. In aging, it is often longed for as partners pass and society mores restrict the use of touch except among close friends. Frequently associated with love and romance, touch can also be used to promote feelings of calmness and acceptance not associated with sexuality. Have you experienced a time when the touch of another’s hand provided reassurance and decreased your anxiety level? Touch done with compassionate intent and caring can promote a symbiotic exchange between friends and even strangers in this game of life. Healing Touch was developed by Janet Mentgen in 1989. This use of energy therapy relies on ancient Asian medicine principles tested over the past thousand years in fields such as acupuncture. The overall philosophy for energy therapy is the idea that the human body is composed of energy fields interacting within the body and between the body and it’s environment. Energy flows through the body along meridians or energy channels through chakras or en-

ergy centers located in specific areas of the human body. Healing Touch utilizes a practitioner with heart-centered, intentional use of hands to move energy to allow balance for homeostasis and encourage the body to support it’s own healing. Similar examples of touch and energy-work modalities include Qigong, Reiki and Therapeutic Touch. Diana Johnson-Burton is a local healing arts practitioner of Healing Touch. Nationally certified as Level 3 practitioner for this type of Energy Work, she is also an active member of the Healing Touch Association. Unlike traditional massage, Healing Touch is non-invasive and although you may be on a massage table, you are typically fully clothed with minimal physical touching by the therapist. Instead, hands are hovered over or lightly touch the body to assess energy fields then “move” the field believed to be stagnant or blocked thus providing balance to support the body’s own wisdom of healing. Diana uses the following words to describe the process and overall result: grounded, clear, intuitive and spiritual, integration of body/mind/spirit, deep relaxation. Although searches for statistical medical scientific research yield few results

Ye Olde Irish Desserts to Warm Ye Belly BY: AMI BROWN

I

s it the luck of the Irish? Or is it just a great cook in the kitchen needed to create these yummy treats? As we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day this year, I found a couple of yummy recipes you might want to try. Forget the green beer, I think you’re going to enjoy these Irish inspired desserts instead.

GUINNESS CHOCOLATE CAKE INGREDIENTS

Photo Sunnydaysgoodfood.com

BLUEBERRY SCONES INGREDIENTS

1¾ cup all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons sugar 1 tablespoon baking powder ¼ teaspoon salt 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, sliced into pats ½ cup dried blueberries 5 tablespoons milk 1 egg, plus 1 more beaten to brush on top

the milk and one egg together. Pour the milk mixture in with the dry ingredients and gently mix until the liquid is fully blended. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface. Knead the dough a few times and pat it into a disc about ¾” thick. Divide the dough into 8 equal wedges -- transfer the wedges to the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each scone. Bake the scones for 15-20 minutes, until the tops are lightly browned. Serve warm with butter!

DIRECTIONS

Heat the oven to 375F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Whisk the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt together in a large bowl. Rub in the butter with your fingers until it’s all worked in. Mix in the blueberries. In a small bowl or measuring cup, whisk

1 cup and 2 tbsp unsalted butter 1 cup Guinness ¾ cup Dutch process cocoa sifted 2 + 1/4 cup all purpose flour, sifted 2 tsp. baking soda 2 cup sugar 2 medium eggs 2/3 cup sour cream 1 tbsp. good quality vanilla extract FROSTING 300 g (1 + 1/3 cup) cream cheese 150 g (1+1/2 c.) powdered sugar, sifted 150 ml (2/3 c.) cream, whipped Instructions Preheat oven to 180C/350F.

DIRECTIONS

Add butter, cocoa and Guinness to a saucepan. Warm over a medium heat and stir until melted. Set aside for 5 to 10 minutes to cool slightly. Add flour, baking soda and sugar to a large mixing bowl and mix together well. Pour in the Guinness/cocoa/butter mixture, lightly combine, add the vanilla, eggs and sour cream and beat everything together until well combined. The batter should be thick and dark chocolate in color. Pour into a greased 10” angel food pan

(or another straight-sided tube pan) and cook in the oven for 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes, or until a skewer comes out clean from the center of the cake. *Note: This cake is very moist inside, so use your judgment regarding the skewer test. Do not leave in the oven until the cake has totally dried out. If you make this in a regular angel food cake pan, you should start checking for doneness at least 15 minutes early. Cool completely.

FROSTING INSTRUCTIONS

Place the cream cheese into the bowl of a mixer and beat on a low-medium speed using a whisk attachment (I find a paddle attachment tends to over-beat the cheese). Whisk until the cheese is smooth and there are no big lumps remaining. Gradually, using a large spoon, add in the sifted powdered sugar and beat gently to combine. After 2 to 3 minutes, stop the machine, scrape any excess frosting from the sides of the bowl and beat on medium speed until lump free. Remove bowl from mixer and gently fold in the whipped cream, mixing to fully combine. Place cooled cake on a cake stand and add the frosting, spreading out just to the edge without going over the side (never go over the sides of the cake) The idea is to capture the essence and simplicity of a pint of Guinness.
