IN THIS ISSUE

So. Many. Pets! We’re so happy to share all these pet pictures with you. Every year, the pet issue seems to be a favorite of the community, and it’s definitely a favorite with all of us at the magazine too. This year we included a section for our News Hounds who are all Very Good Dogs. When we asked for your pet pictures, we received photos of dogs with outfits, dogs at home, and dogs on the beach or other locations out and about in town. And then there are the Dogs of Stuart Avenue. Special thanks to the group of dogs there, and their humans, for submitting as a pack. We loved it. But we had to go with Slick Willy for the cover. He’s just adorable and he’s chilling at a place all the locals love (American Fish, in case you didn’t recognize it). He may have a few white hairs — don’t we all? — but he is still living the good life at the coast. As you page through this issue, you can read up on dog park etiquette, a local trainer who has found his true calling, and advice from a local veterinarian. And we hope you love looking at all these photos as much as we enjoyed getting them!

native Mike Chambers finished his time in the Marine Corps, he returned to the area and began his career in private security, just as he’d planned. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Security Management and quickly found success. After a while, he felt an urge to follow a new calling - he had the idea of becoming a K9 handler. His true calling was right around the corner, just not exactly as he’d pictured it.

As Chambers began doing research into the world of K9, with the goal of becoming a handler, he discovered American K9 Interdiction (AK9I) in Virginia. They offered a trainer’s program which allowed students to go through a 13week course with the K9 of their choosing, hand-picked by each student at the beginning of the program. Upon completion of the program, students graduate along with their newly trained K9s.

That particular program caught Chamber’s eye in more than one way, but especially when he learned it was a fast

track for law enforcement. That, however, wasn’t exactly how it went. “I fell in love with the process of building a bond with the animals and seeing it come to fruition during training,” Chambers explained. “I immediately became hooked and knew I could do a lot more for the law enforcement community by utilizing my skills to develop highly trained K9s to watch over our law enforcement officers, as well as help them do their job.”

About two years ago, Chambers was able to see his dream come to fruition in the form of Cape Fear K9, the training facility he opened in Boiling Springs Lakes. While they are, indeed, a K9 training facility as their name implies, they’re primarily a pet training facility for the local community. “People can expect to find a team that has dedicated their lives to helping them and their dogs be successful,” Chambers said. “We understand every dog is unique and every situation is different. Our goal is to provide the best option to our clients no matter what their goals may be.”

The facility offers a wide range of services that include private lessons, classes, workshops, as well as board and train programs. More specialized courses, such as American Kennel Club (AKC) scent classes and protection training also are offered to those who are interested.

When it comes to working with the dogs, Chambers emphasizes how crucial relationships are when it comes to dog training, particularly as it relates to addressing dog behavior. “There are a lot of myths and outdated information about dogs, and we have learned so much as a community in the past couple of decades,” he said. “Having a diverse background with lots of experience and a wide array of challenges has aided me as a trainer. We believe in using the minimum amount of stress/ discomfort in our training. We believe in a 3-prong approach: Training, Management and Education. Sometimes we [as people] think anything can be trained and, mostly, that is true; however, there is always a

need for management protocols and owner education.”

When asked about what people need to keep in mind when looking into training, and dogs in general, Chambers explained, “We as human beings are conditioned to be reactionary creatures. In addition, we have a much higher sense of emotions and thoughts. These two things can often lead to unwanted complications that may arise within their household. Over 90 percent of the clients we see come because of ‘some-

thing’ that’s happened. We often don’t realize how these actions can affect [the feelings of] our dogs until it is too late. We love dogs, and yet we humanize them rather than loving them for what they are. We are here to help bridge that gap and build that understanding so that everyone is happy.”

The thorough understanding of canines and their behavior has served Chambers tremendously well when training dogs. Everything they do at Cape Fear K9 is rooted in understanding the behavior of dogs and utilizing relationships to overcome obstacles as well as build deeper bonds with them. They stand true to their mission statement: Training based on principles of fairness, understanding and accountability.

Chamber’s best advice: “It’s important to put in the time to train your dog in order to get more of the behaviors you want; however, consistency and quality repetitions are much more important.”

Community Dog Park Etiquette

Some Tips For A Successful Dog Park Visit

Editor’s Note: This story originally appeared in the CVity of Southport’s Newsletter as rules for the new Dog PArk planned for Taylor Field, but the rules are great tips for any dog park.

With the highly anticipated opening of the Taylor Field Dog Park, I wanted to pass along great dog park tips. Whether you are new to the dog park world or have some experience, here’s a quick guide to basic dog park etiquette. The new dog park will be a great place to take your dog for exercise and socialization. Proper etiquette (for humans and dogs) and common sense are important in determining whether your local dog park is a safe and enjoyable place for dogs and people.

GENERAL GUIDELINES

1. Prior to taking your dog to the dog park, it’s a good idea to visit the park first, without your dog. Become familiar with the layout, park rules, park setup, cleanliness, and the behavior of the dogs and people at the park. It’s a good idea to observe on the day(s)

time(s) you would want to take your dog to the park, but the first couple of times you do take your dog to the park, try to do so when there are fewer dogs so that it will be less stressful for your dog.

2. Small dogs should not be in the same area as large dogs. A safe environment for your small dog is to have a separate area designated only for small dogs. Even if the large dog is appropriate toward small dogs, he may inadvertently injure the small dog just by putting his paw on the little dog, or when he is running and jumping.

3. All dogs must wear a collar and display a current Rabies vaccination tag.

DOGS AT THE PARK

1. There are many dogs that are not good candidates for dog park play. Many dogs don’t actually like meeting dogs they do not know. This is more likely to be true for more mature dogs (older than two years of age), those that have had limited interaction with unknown dogs, or may have genetic/ breed tendencies that influence behavior toward dogs. A dog park is not an appropriate place for dogs that have serious behavior problems toward dogs or humans. Dogs that have these kinds of issues should not be taken to dog parks.

2. Please do not bring females in heat or intact males to the dog park. Unaltered males are much more likely to be aggressive, particularly if they are adolescents (younger than two years).

3. Dog park dogs should be friendly and outgoing without being overbearing, obnoxious, or bullies toward other dogs. Your dog should be

fairly confident and sociable toward other dogs. Reactive, fearful, or aggressive dogs are not appropriate for dog parks.

4. Incessant barking or barking with a serious or aggressive intent should be curtailed.

5. Your dog should be responsive to some of the basic commands, such as sit, come and leave it (or other verbal/sound interruptive) so that you can gain control of him if needed or to prevent him from harassing others while in the park.

6. Any dog visiting the park should be healthy. Dogs should be current on vaccines and parasite free, without any infections or other communicable illnesses or diseases. Puppies aged four months or younger should NOT be brought to a dog park as they are not fully vaccinated. Dogs visiting the dog park should also be structurally sound. If a dog has hip dysplasia, arthritis, or

other structural problems, this is usually painful and is a high-risk factor for causing aggressive behavior when a dog is hurt or stressed by the anticipation of being hurt.

HUMANS AT THE PARK

1. Read the posted dog park rules and follow them. Even if you don’t agree with them, they are there to keep dogs and people safe and to create a positive atmosphere within the dog park.

2. Small children are best left at home (younger than nine). Dogs that are playing roughly and running around will accidentally run into people. Large dogs can sometimes knock down a fullgrown man! If these dogs run into a child, the result could be serious. There are also usually some dogs at the dog park that have not been socialized with children.

3. It is very important to keep an eye on your dog at all times. If you

are doing this, you can prevent problems or situations that might otherwise occur if you are not paying attention to what your dog is doing. Be prepared to interrupt – whether your dog is the perpetrator or the victim.

4. Be especially careful when entering the park, as this is a highly charged area. Dogs will crowd around, which can feel very overwhelming to the newcomer. If your dog is already in the park, do everything you can to move your dog away from the gate to avoid overcrowding the newcomer. Be sure to gently and slowly move your dog away from the gate. Always take the leash off your dog when in the park.

5. Remove your dog’s leash in the safe space area prior to entering the park. When dogs are leashed entering the park, it may cause stress and could lead to aggression. Also, carry your dog’s leash with you at all times in case it is quickly needed.

6. Avoid pushing dogs into

each other while moving them. If a dog is put into another dog’s personal space without invitation, this could cause problems.

7. The potential for dog fights increases if the group of dogs crowds around people or into a tighter space. It is important to avoid doing anything that will cause the dogs to gather close to one another.

8. All food should be prohibited in the dog park area. This includes food people are eating or dog treats/food of any kind. Food, along with other valuable items (such as pig ears, rawhide, and toys), increase the likelihood of aggressive behavior in the group.

9. Much of the time there isn’t a problem when a dog is going after his/ her own ball or Frisbee. However, if other dogs do intervene, it is best to either stop playing this game with your dog or take your dog to an area designated for individual dogs.

10. If your dog is not having

a good time (i.e., cowering, strongly avoiding other dogs, etc.) or is the cause of others not having a good time (i.e., bullying, obnoxious, excessive mounting or barking, etc.) it would be best to remove your dog from the dog park. Some dogs prefer a small circle of friends and don’t care for crowds of unknown dogs. Many dogs enjoy playing at the park when they are young but less so as they mature. You can try again another day to see if things go differently. Sometimes it’s just the group of dogs that are present that can influence how your dog behaves at the park.

11. Dog parks are NOT the place to work on your dog’s behavior issues or problems.

12. If someone complains about your dog’s behavior, be willing to consider his perspective before becoming defensive or not listening to what the person is saying. Apologize if your dog has been inappropriate and leave the park if your dog is being too rough.

13. Please do not let your dog wear choke, prong, or shock collars as these can have adverse side effects when used during play with other dogs. All extra gear (harnesses, collars other than plain buckle collars) should be removed before entering the park.

14. If a human and/or his dog is behaving inappropriately, assume they don’t know any better and do your best to educate him/her gently and politely. The positive approach generally works better with humans as well as for dogs!

If the actions of other people or dogs put you or your dog at risk, and the other dog owner isn’t receptive to education, take your dog and leave the park.

If you and your dog follow dog park etiquette and enjoy the dog park experience, you have found something great for both of you to enjoy!

Happy Playing!

Riverine Warfare

Brunswick Civil War Round Table Meets

STORY CONTRIBUTED

the Civil War, riverine warfare was a new concept. Both sides required waterborne assets to transport and sustain major land forces, conduct amphibious expeditions and sieges, interdict enemy trade, communications and transportation, and protect friendly commerce. Wooden and ironclad river gunboats would be employed along inland rivers, especially the mighty Mississippi River. This will be the topic, entitled, “Defending the Arteries of Rebellion,” presented by historian and author Neil Chatelain at the Tuesday, Jan. 3 meeting of the Brunswick Civil War Round Table.

Importantly, this meeting will be held at Generations Church on Rt. 211, 3/10 mile from the St. James main gate (4019 Executive Park Blvd., Southport). Everyone is welcome. Registration begins at 6:15 pm and the program starts at 7 pm. The visitor fee is $10 which can be applied toward the $25 annual membership dues.

Control of the Mississippi River and its tributaries was a slow and bloody struggle, one of the longest and most challenging campaigns of the Civil War encompassing a 700-mile wet corridor from Mound City, Illinois to the Gulf of Mexico. Importantly, it played a vital role in the outcome of the war. As Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman wrote to his wife Ellen on June 10, 1862, “I think the Mississippi, the great artery of America, whatever power holds it, it holds the continent.”

Most historians researching the Mississippi River’s Civil War operations

tend to focus on efforts by the Union to gain its control, ignoring Confederate naval defenses. However, Confederate leadership envisioned a riverine fleet that could gain parity with their opponent. While they felt positive, scarcity of supplies, a lack of operational coordination, no clear strategic objectives, and no well-defined position from their political leaders, the South never had a chance of success against Union forces. Yet, the Confederacy challenged Union control of the Mississippi River valley at every turn, introducing innovations that spread to other theaters of the conflict, including ironclad warships, synchronized joint operations, reintroduction of the ram, and underwater torpedoes.

Guest speaker Neil Chatelain is adjunct professor of history at Lone Star College in Texas. The former U.S. Navy Surface Warfare Officer is a graduate of the University of New Or-

leans, the University of Houston, and the University of Louisiana-Monroe. Neil researches U.S. Naval History, concentrating on the Civil War. He is a member of Emerging Civil War, and a prolific author, including “Defending the Arteries of Rebellion: Confederate Naval Operations in the Mississippi River Valley,1861 – 1865” and “Fought Like Devils: The Confederate Gunboat McRae,” as well as articles for magazines, journals, and online sites.

For more information about the Brunswick Civil War Round Table, options for attending the Jan. 3 meeting, becoming a member, or wish to volunteer for this non-profit organization, please email president John Butler at Brunswickcwrt@gmail.com, or call (404) 229-9425. Visit Facebook page

Recent Advances In Veterinary Medicine

It doesn’t seem that long ago that we practiced medicine like James Herriot, the famed British veterinary surgeon who treated all comers in the countryside with experience and ingenuity, but little else. Without even antibiotics, he managed to treat his patients standing in a muddy field, in the dark, with farmers acting as assistants.

The difference between human and veterinary medicine in his time was not great, but as we gained knowledge about microbes, developed sterile technique, antibiotics and medical imaging – the gap widened. Animals then were not yet considered family – they didn’t rate the time and expense to treat them the way a person would be treated.

Over the past 20 years that gap has narrowed and our ability to provide care at a higher level has skyrocketed.

Although the majority of veterinarians like the ones your pet sees work in general practice, there are also more than 40

recognized specialties requiring further study and examination. Locally, we have surgeons, internists, ophthalmologists, radiologists, and sport medicine and rehabilitation specialists. Your veterinarian can consult with these specialists on cases, as well as refer your pet to them when needed.

General practitioners (GPs) and specialists now routinely use Computer Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), and other advanced imaging techniques to look for the underlying problems. Most GPs have digital X-ray and many have ultrasound available.

New diagnostic techniques allow us to screen for cancer with blood tests (OncoK9 Liquid Biopsy ) and urine (CADET Braf ).

We can treat orthopedic issues with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and stem cells, and wounds with laser therapy and hyperbaric oxygen chambers.

Surgeons do more and more work with scopes and laser, and can do amazing precision work in the bladder, in joints, and in the heart. Although it’s still rare, kidney transplants and heart valve replacements are being done in animals. Your dog can have cataract surgery as easily as you can.

Cancers can be treated with chemotherapy (note: this is NOT like human chemotherapy, so talk to your vet if your pet has cancer) and radiation, but some are also now treated with immunotherapy, mirroring advances in human oncology.

One of the most exciting areas of advancements is the use of Monoclonal Antibodies, which have been in use in human medicine for decades — you might have

heard of drugs like Humira and Cosentryx.

Monoclonal antibodies are created in labs to mimic our own natural antibodies.

Veterinary medicine now has two monoclonal antibody therapies available for pets – Cytopoint, which targets itchy skin in dogs, and Solensia, which targets arthritis pain in cats. These therapies are technically not drugs, so their use is likely safer and also can be used without interactions with other medications and in younger animals. They are given by injection and last a month and longer.

With these advances does come one downside – cost. These therapies generally still cost less than similar treatments in humans, but the cost of veterinary medicine in general is rising like everything else.

How will you pay for them, if they are needed in your pets? The best way I can recommend is to have pet insurance. It can allow you to say yes to these advanced diagnostics and therapies without the stress of wondering where you will get the money. Not all pet insurance is created equally, so do your homework. But there are many companies that do a great job helping us take advantage of the amazing progress our profession is making in helping your pets live longer, healthier lives.

ART BEAT

Living On A Safari Wilmington Photographer In

S. Africa

Art is everywhere, and sometimes you find it in the unlikeliest places, like an airplane. Photographer and Filmmaker Cannon Wentworth was born and raised in Charlotte and moved to Wilmington in 2011 to attend UNCW as a film studies major. Her life changed when she was offered the chance to study abroad and fulfill her childhood dream of going to South Africa. Cannon jumped on an opportunity to learn there and has lived in South Africa for the past five years. I just happened to sit next to her on a flight from Newark to Wilmington in true serendipity.

We immediately started talking about our dogs and her incredible journey as a wildlife photographer. “I studied abroad in South Africa through UNCW for about a month in 2013 and it was just not long enough. I fell in love with the country and its people immediately,” she said. “The next year, I found a wildlife filmmaking internship there, and so in 2014, attended the internship and returned to South Africa. In 2015 I graduated from UNCW and decided to travel, starting in Scotland, and worked my way down to Botswana for a wildlife project in the Central Kalahari. After the project finished, I was so close to South Africa with little

to do, so I returned to South Africa for a third time, found a job, and roots began to grow.”

Living so far away from home does present challenges. However, Cannon has learned living at a slower pace and has adapted to her new home abroad. Although South Africa is laid back, much like Wilmington, it is a third-world country with some fundamental differences. “South Africans are amazing people who are strong and adaptable to any circumstance, a common saying being ‘make a plan.’ There are much fewer rules in South Africa, like being able to walk your dog off the leash on the beach all year, which I love. The landscape is completely different to Wilmington as it is mountainous in areas, with an extremely diverse coastline whereas Wilmington is flatter with long beaches. There are pockets of pine trees in South Africa which is always a nice reminder of home. Oh and South Africa doesn’t have Chick-fil-a,” she joked. “I do miss Wilmington. Wilmington holds such a special place in my heart, and you will very often find me bragging about this great little city to South Africans while I’m abroad. I am very proud to be from NC, and especially Wilmington.”

Being able to merge her passions into her work is an incredible accomplishment. Cannon always knew she wanted to work with animals somehow but realized that being a veterinarian or

zoologist wasn’t for her. She decided to choose film studies in college so she could be near animals. “My biggest passion is wildlife, as I have been obsessed with animals since I was very young. Another passion of mine is the camera, both photography and videography. I bought my first DSLR in the eighth grade with babysitting money,” she said. “I always wanted to do something with animals as a career. Rather than research or veterinarian, I decided to combine two passions, wildlife and the camera, and strive to become a wildlife filmmaker/photographer,” she said. “I majored in film studies and worked as a lead videographer. I worked as an assistant editor in Chicago at a production company, and now I co-own a production company in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, that does filmmaking and photography. My goal is to

use the camera as a communication tool to shed light and educate people about wildlife.”

Capturing just the right photo at the perfect moment is a thrilling aspect of wildlife photography. Trying to find the animals in the wild and predict their behavior is challenging but rewarding. Because Cannon’s husband Nickolas shares a similar interest in animals as a safari guide and wildlife artist, she has many opportunities to see wildlife in their natural habitat. “I love capturing genuine beauty and exhibiting it in ways people who don’t exactly care for nature or wildlife will even appreciate,” she said. “My husband and I work as a team to find our favorites, being apex predators like leopards, lions and cheetahs, and the gorgeous giant elephants,” she said. “My personal favorite has to be the wild dogs. They are very rare to find (being an endangered species) and usually, the sighting happens as quick as a flash, so it’s a very challenging animal to get nice photos of. But when you get that perfectly lit and composed photo of that wild animal, the adrenaline rush is beyond compare,” she said. “It’s a great coincidence that the best time to view wildlife is in the early morning and late afternoon as that is what photographers call the ‘golden hour.’ In photography terms, the golden hour is an hour after sunrise and an hour before sunset. This is when you get the best lighting for photographs and when animals are most active,” she said. “I shoot on Fuji Film. I am beyond happy with Fuji and the quality you get for its size. I find the quality much higher, and the photos have more depth and a better color profile on a Fuji. The equipment is also much lighter, which helps with wildlife photography.”

Being animal lovers, Cannon and her

husband have rescued three dogs that you will often see in her photography. One is a purebred Border collie, and the others are border collie mixes. “Their

favorite thing to do is ‘monkey patrol,’ which is chasing the Vervet monkeys along the perimeter of our fence line,” said Cannon. “Our border collie joins my husband on game drives and knows all the animals by name. His absolute favorite is a warthog. He doesn’t really care for the big animals but loves warthog, jackal, mongoose, and springbok - just to list a few. On a game drive, he is trained to lie down when he smells lions, which helps us know they are in the immediate area. They live very spoiled lives with beach visits, kayak trips, game drives, and more.”

Look for Cannon on Facebook or Instagram to see more of her fantastic work.
