TI’ve never met a more passionate and driven person than Louisa Branscomb! She is focused and passionate about her mission. ScreenDoor Songwriter Alliance is the underlying non-profit that organizes the Songwriter’s Festival. It’s mission is...”to create intimate listening venues for songwriters, create musical projects that build community, and create educational programs in high risk populations such as foster kids and seniors. “ Southport once again is the perfect location for her to carry out this goal. It offers the small town community, with an interest in the arts and spacious green areas for outdoor concerts and plent of front porches to host those intimate venues. Southport also is the home of some super talented musicians and songwriters as well.

CURRENTS A LITTLE MORE ABOUT LOUISA...

The Southport Songwriter Festival (S2f) is a featured event of the ScreenDoor Songwriter Alliance (S2a) a non-profit (501c3) whose mission is to create ways to use songwriting to bridge the differences between people and build community, and to support songwriters and songwriting as art and profession. We celebrate local, regional, and national songwriters and original music by providing educational workshops and events for songwriters, and to promote the arts, businesses, and amenities of the unique coastal village of Southport, NC. If you missed last years festival I would encourage you to head to the website www.screendooralliance.com and watch the video clips. You’ll get a teaser of what is to come. And I might add - it sounds incredible!

Known as a pioneer for songwriters,

Louisa Branscomb has devoted the

past 30 plus years of her professional

career to promoting songwriters and

building community through songwrit-

ing and original music. As a professional songwriter Louisa has penned over 180 recorded songs. She has been the recipient of two Grammy Awards,

two Song of the Year Awards (Steel Rails, as recorded by Alison Krauss, and Dear Sister, recorded by co-writer

Claire Lynch.) and three World of Blue-

grass Awards. Her passion for “Build-

ing Community One Song at a Time”

is directly reflected in the many events of The Southport Songwriter Festival.

Still Seeking Sponsorship

Call for sponsorship and community support to keep this festival open and free to the public!

Call for Community Sponsorships and Volunteers: 3 rd Annual Southport Songwriter Festival benefit songwriting for kids, songwriters, and promote Southport Arts and Business S2F returns June 14-18, 2017, featuring over 50 regional and national songwriters, with afternoon and evening events plus a full lineup on Father’s Day. The festival benefits ScreenDoor year long programs using songwriting to aid veterans and high needs children. A change this year is that S2F events are open to the public with no admission, so the event and year-round function depend en-

tirely on community sponsorships and donations, (tax deductible). With the slogan “Building Community One Song at a Time,” S2F, guided by founder and Southport resident Louisa Branscomb, has brought a unique vision to our community: that of uniting people across individual differences through music, while also creating opportunities for a “front porch” style of bringing songwriters and listeners together in intimate settings surrounded by Southport’s unique commerce and its natural beauty. To date, the festival has presented some 200 songwriters in over 11 events in Southport, involved over 150 volunteers and countless Southport venues

and businesses. Through festival proceeds and grants, Executive Director Branscomb, who is an internationally known songwriter with multiple Grammies and chart hits, combines her lifelong passion for songwriting with her expertise in trauma, families and communities via the 501 c-3 ScreenDoor Songwriter Alliance. In addition to the community productions with S2F, she has formed and directed several programs with foster children and school children using songwriting to express their stories, then in turn share these in performances that benefit and inspire others. Notably, S2F favorites, the Howard Boys are inspiring groups throughout NC

with songs created with Branscomb. Branscomb is also working to create various alliances to help veterans in NC. A stellar initial festival lineup of national and local acts and a variety of musical styles includes Dark Water Rising, Jeanette and Johnny Williams, Sol-R Fusion, Chuck Larson, LaNelle Davis, Tommy Edwards, Brooksie Wells, Laura McLean, Karen Newsum, Jeremy Truett, James Archer, and Daniel Geutschow. The festival will be hosted by Louisa Branscomb and Friends of Distinction, featuring 16 year old ScreenDoor Songwriter Scholarship winner Micahlan Boney. Festival Coordinator Jayne Howard and the team of core volunteers are actively seeking your help. “Bringing in the kind of talent and numbers of artists we have enjoyed in the past will depend on community support, since the event is free to the community. We depend on the festival for year long programs that help communities through our programs with children.” You can help by making a donation (through our website or call us and we will come to you), hosting a band, providing housing for a visiting artist, or being an event sponsor. We also need event coordinators, photographers, and general volunteers.” S2F walks the talk of “building community, one song at a time. It is the first event of its kind in the country, and welcomes all who’d like to “help make the music play.” To get the full feel of the festival, watch the video produced by Southport’s Chris Webster on You Tube (google Southport Songwriter Festival on You Tube). The full day main event on Father’s Day will honor fathers via your $100 donation to ScreenDoor Songwriter Alliance. For questions or donations, Jayne can be contacted at: southportsongwriterfestival@gmail. com / 910-442- 8252. For more information, or to play at the festival if you are a songwriter, hit “like” on ScreenDoor Songwriter Alliance on FB or request to be in the group Southport Songwriter Festival Think Tank.

Sea Notes & Band Team Up It’s a first with Brunswick Band and Local Choral Society BY LISA STITELS

T

his year’s 4th of July Festival includes a combined concert of the Sea Notes Choral Society and the Brunswick Concert Band. It’s the first time in seven years or so that the two groups have performed together, and they have a show full of patriotic and truly American songs to help celebrate the nation’s birthday.

There are two chances to catch the concert -- Saturday and Sunday June 24th and 25th at Odell Williamson, on the campus of Brunswick Community College. Both shows are at 3 p.m., offering a cool respite from the heat of the Festival’s many outdoor events. The shows are open to the public and are free of charge. Both groups are non-profits and rely on donations though, so donations

will happily be accepted at the concerts.

For this summer spectacular, Tom Smicklas will conduct the band position of this concert. He said this performance would appeal to audiences of all ages.

“There was a common feeling among many Sea Notes and leaders of the Brunswick Concert Band that a joint concert would be a wonderful way of ex-

SHOWCASE pressing well-crafted patriotic music for area residents,” Smicklas said.

Southern Views Window and Siding Co., Inc. Quality at Discount Prices

Sea Notes Publicity Chair Kim Wilding agreed, saying there was a “real desire to get together again and provide some good inspirational music for the community.” The groups will each perform their own selection of music, and then combine for several numbers as well.

Before...

“We’ll showcase the band, we showcase the chorus, and then we’ll showcase both groups,” Wilding said. There is only so much room on the stage, and both groups will perform with smaller number, just 80 singers and 30 musicians. The groups actually share a few members too. The Sea Notes have been performing at the Festival since the mid-1970s, and the two groups have performed the traditional patriotic concert together numerous times. “The Brunswick Concert Band was limited in size to fit on the state with the Sea Notes and, most importantly, to balance and blend with the Sea Note band/choir selections,” Smicklas said. And, 30 members was the average size of a 4th of July concert band back in the day. So it also has an historical precedent.” The Sea Notes’ program includes familiar standards such as “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” and “America the Beautiful,” along with selections such as “I Hear America Singing,” Sunrise Over America,” “Seize the Day” and “Strong.” The Band will play “vintage patriotic and seasonal classics,” Smicklas said, including many “from the repertoire of John Phillip Sousa.” While both ensembles will practice their music well before concert time, they’ll only join together the week before the concert.

The Sea Notes concert moved to the Auditorium in the recent past, and as for the Band members, Smicklas said they will be glad to be playing in the air conditioning this year. “It’s a celebration of our nation. I think just having the enthusiasm of the band and singers together in celebration of this country is going to be exhilarating,” Wilding said.

SHOWCASE

Smokey Joe’s Cafe!

Brunswick Little Theatre is on fire with Smokey Joe’s Cafe, the hot musical of the Summer STORY BY: LISA STITES

G

ood rhythms, beautiful harmonies and familiar songs we love to hear -- it’s all part of Brunswick Little Theatre’s summer musical.

“Smokey Joe’s Cafe” is a musical revue showcasing 39 pop standards from the late 50s and early 60s, including rock ‘n’ roll and rhythm and blues songs written by songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller.

His favorite number is the opening one, called “Neighborhood.” He said it sets the tone, giving a feeling of life in the city, in the old neighborhood.

The show’s hit list includes such favorites as “Young Blood,” “Kansas City,” “Fools Fall in Love,” “Poison Ivy,” and “Treat Me Nice.” The show also pays homage to some of the music industry’s greatest singers, with “Hound Dog,” “Jailhouse Rock,” “I’m a Woman” and “Stand By Me.” Novelty songs such as “Yakety Yak” and”Charlie Brown” are also featured.

Chiang and Stringer partnered to bring “Shrek” to the stage last summer. Chiang said Stringer has a great sense of rock ‘n’ roll and of jazz, understands the music of this show very well and is helping the actors understand it too.

Director Cal Chiang said this music helped define an era and musical director Michael Stringer said this musical revue is something that everyone will like. “It’s got the nice ballads, rock ‘n’ roll, gospel, novelty songs...it’s a broad spectrum of stuff. It’s songs we all know, but they’re different from each other,” Stringer said. The cast features 10 powerhouse singers who are no strangers to the stage in one form or another. Some of the singers have appeared in other Brunswick Little Theatre (BLT) productions. Some are new to the BLT stage but have experience with other theaters, bands, Brunswick County’s own Sea Notes Choral Society and even barbershop quartet. “The talent is amazing,” Chiang said. “They’re doing really fantastic harmonies, which also defined the music of this era.”

“It’s the city culture. We’ve kind of lost that,” Chiang said.

Stringer said that he started rehearsals by working with the singers and the musicians separately before bringing them together. Stringer started his work in musical theater with a production of “My Fair Lady” when he was 16 and has been involved with 80 productions over the years. “I love it,” he said. “It’s fun for me. es to the roots of rock ‘n’ roll. Stringer said the revue was a chance to draw in audiences who might not be familiar with musical theater, or with theater in general.

Chiang said the music of this show will make the older audiences reminiscent and will expose some of the younger audienc-

“We did “Shrek” last year, and “Into the Woods” before that, and that’s a different vibe,” Stringer said. “If they come to something more accessible, they might branch out a little. We’d also like to get larger audiences for the plays, and if they come out to see something like this….

“I think it’s a good way to expose people to live theater it’s not intimidating,” he said. “It’s very accessible. The songs are familiar and they’ll enjoy it. Once you get people in the theater, they might come back.”

The show runs June 15-18 and 22-25. Show times are 7:30 for the Thursday, Friday and Saturday shows and 3 p.m. For the Sunday shows. Tickets are $20 for adults and $12 for students and are available at BrunswickLittleTheatre.com.

When he first saw the show performed on Broadway, Chiang said he knew it was a show he wanted to do one day. “It plays to what I like to do -- staging music and choreography,” he said.

Top Shelf Treatments at Southport Massage

Say Goodbye To Your Stiff Necks, Aching Backs and Tired Feet BY: LESLIE FOSTER

G

etting a massage has become pretty mainstream in the world today. One can virtually get a “walk-up” appointment in any mall in the country. Once considered a gift reserved for only special Occasions, massage is now a regular part of living a healthy lifestyle at any age.

Let’s face it, we are busy! We spend way to much time on our phones, our computers, in our cars and in front of the tv! Our lack of movement creates a whole host of issues in our bodies. From the ground up, and the neck down our muscles work overtime to support(literally!) our sedentary selves. Logically, when we decide to add exercise into our routines those muscles have shortened are tight and cause us pain! Often we reach for an OTC anti- inflam-

matory, take a hot bath and hope the pain goes away. Old School People! Muscles need to move freely to move well. They require lengthening (stretching) and a rich blood supply( circulation) as well as new muscle memory established so they stay loose and remain flexible. The roadmap to wellness can depend greatly on massage. Owner, Jason Smith is truly a gifted therapist who knows how the muscular -skeletal system should work harmoniously together. He takes the time

to meet with clients to understand their needs. During a treatment he will often refer to the specific muscles ( Latin origin) That are the tight and knotted, using his knowledge and skill to release the tension, thereby releasing your pain. In addition to massage Jason offers additional services, Infrared Sauna and copper-pot foot soaks which promote overall wellness and relaxation. Their attractive and well-stocked gift shop offers all-natural, home-made bath treatments that pam-

per the body and soothe the soul. Pain is universal. But living with it doesn’t have to be. Our community is blessed to have an expert in massage therapy, conveniently located in downtown Southport. Jason Smith IS a healer. He is committed to his client’s wellness and release from pain. Massage shops may be a dime a dozen, and some are better than others. But, if you or someone you know is in pain and seeks relief, make an appointment at Southport Massage. And if you just need to stop, reset and pamper yourself call Southport Massage. Hands down you’ll walk out a better version of yourself!

1. Tell our readers how Therapeutic massage differs from other types of massage.

Therapeutic massage is a term that describes a type of massage that helps relieve pain, reduce stress, and work on specific problem areas. These massages are also referred to as deep tissue, but therapeutic doesn’t always require deep pressure. I believe that a massage should move muscles to their full length so the muscles regain their strength in return reducing spasms, tightness and overall pain.

2. “It all begins with the feet.” Both pains and the relief from it, I’m told. Tell us about the Copper Pot foot soaks!

This treatment sounds both luxurious and therapeutic! Our feet carry us everywhere and have a demanding job. There are more than 7000 nerve endings in your feet that send messages throughout our body. Nourishing and taking care of our feet can help us stay healthy. The copper pots are used to provide an antimicrobial environment for our soaks; it also is an excellent heat conductor. Soaking in copper allows your body to absorb copper trace minerals which increases our feeling of calmness. Our soaks are created by an Aromatherapist, and utilize a combination of salts and essential oils that relax, calm and detoxify the body. We also provide heated herbal neck wraps during your soak that ease the mind and release muscle tension. We have a variety of soaks available including goat milk soaks, foaming botanicals, even a beer soak. Every foot soak is finished with an application of natural lotion and a dusting of our all natural powder to leave your feet feeling revitalized.

3. What is an Infrared Sauna? Benefits and pricing?

An infrared sauna is a type of sauna that uses light to create heat which promotes a deep, healthy and natural detoxifying sweat. Sweating is one of the body’s safest and most natural ways to heal and main-

BIZ Q&A tain good health. Infrared wavelengths penetrate much deeper than traditional saunas allowing greater benefits. The wonderful benefits of an infrared sauna session include: detoxification, pain relief, relaxation, improved circulation, skin purification and weight loss. Sauna sessions are 30 minutes. A single session is $30 or we offer a package of 4 sessions for $100.

4. In your experience, what are the most common areas of injury, which in turn cause pain? And what is the process of care for your clients?

I have found the most common area for an injury is the shoulders. I find most people come to me with stiff and aggravated shoulders which in return cause neck pain an limited range of motion. This is always an adventure to find the source of pain with my clients and set their healing goals for care. With every client I see we set goals and work for them to go through their day with ease.

5. Jason, your reputation as a highly skilled massage therapist proceeds you! What factors led you into the profession, and subsequently, to open and operate your own business in Southport?

I’d have to say the biggest factor was years ago and is still today my lovely wife Stacy Smith. While on one of our crazy adventures in the car, we discussed our future plans and how to accomplish it. When the idea of owning a spa and me working toward becoming a massage therapist was even brought up we chuckled. I enjoyed giving my wife massages and using hot stones to relief her tension, she said I would be a wonderful massage therapist so we looked at school options and made the commitment to start my education. Then we looked at every option of how to build a massage business that would best serve peoples needs. As far as how I came to love what I do and grow every day, that is all thanks to my clients and their belief that massage is Therapy. It’s not always a soft relaxing hour that they need and my very active clients know and trust in me to keep them moving in the right directions. It feels amazing to know you are helping people feel better and enjoy life.

6. I’ve been told that you are able to improve a golfer’s swing by watching their range of motion as they swing the club. That’s impressive! Tell us more!

This is a fun topic for me because I enjoy teaching people about their bodies and watching them improve as they gain understanding of what muscles are responsible for the movements. When we

are active, our muscles build a form, a kind of memory from either injuries or lifestyle factors. This is always present in how we move. So when working with someone I always set a way to see progress and this particular method is one where we will set a starting swing. Then as we move through the massage goals we will keep a close eye on where we turn and align their body in reference to the golf ball. Then this is where we will begin to look at the form and rotation of the arms. Last thing we pay a lot of attention is the distribution of weight before and after the swing. Then we move their muscles and muscle groups so they achieve the full range of motion. This will help improve their swing and overall enjoyment of the game.

7. True or False: Do shoes/sandals and bare feet really affect other parts of our bodies? And if so, how can ladies stay stylish and remain pain free?

True: We are always on our feet so the type of shoes and support will affect the how we stand and walk. A lot of sandals and flip flops provide no arch support which cause soreness in the foot and ankle and can even lead to more serious issues like plantar fasciitis. If our feet and ankles are having issues this can also affect our hips and low back resulting in pain and stiffness. I would do some research and find a sandal or flip flop that provides arch support and cushion. Remember a relaxing copper pot foot soak can keep your feet happy and looking great all season long.

8. If I were to give a gift certificate

to a friend from Southport massage, which products or service would recommend? I have $100 to spend.

I would recommend a 60 minute therapeutic massage. They can always use the remaining balance to purchase a take home gift from Body & Sole such as, botanical bath tea, to complete their day of relaxation.

9. Is your wife involved in the business? If so, what is her role?

Yes, she is the co-owner and business partner. Stacy is also a certified Aromatherapist. She handcrafts natural body and bath products. She also formulates all of our foot soak recipes and scrubs used in our copper pot soaks. You can purchase all of her wonderful Body & Sole products including lotions, powders, soap, bath teas, and natural bug repellents here at the retreat.

10. Tell us about the services you provide, the best way to make an appointment and your plans for the future!

Southport Massage & Foot Retreat offers a variety of massages to meet everyone’s needs. We also have the copper pot foot soaks, infrared sauna room, and the Body & Sole body and bath products. You can call our office to schedule your appointment 910-363-4639 or book online from our website www.Southport-Massage.com. Our future plans include offering reflexology, medi-cupping therapy and listening to our clients to see what new therapies they would like to have available as we continue to grow.

ART BEAT taking both in size, form and theme. The expertise of his art is evident in not only the proportion of lines and curves, but in the subject matter drawn on them. Picasso-like nude figures and thick lines adorn the sides of one large piece fitting well with the curves of the clay. Hayden has mastered the craft of making large slab built pieces, and it’s easy to see why he has so many awards to his name. It is not easy getting such large pieces successfully through the pottery process. Hayden’s life has been a story of great success following trials and adversity. Before he found his love for working in art, he learned how to play music in spite of

t’s that time of year where nature wakes up from her deep sleep, and we have cleaned off the yellow pollen of spring from our porches. With summer trying to make an appearance comes the annual migration of pale northern tourists to our beaches hoping to thaw out.

I have to admit, when I went to meet Adrian Spencer Hayden and talk about his art, I had no idea just how successful and talented he was. Hayden has spent his life working in a creative field going between art and music. As an award-winning 3D artist, he has over 100 best in show awards on his resume. And working as a professional

Hayden and his wife Kristi have made Southport their home, relocating here two years ago. Today, Hayden is busy getting his pottery studio up and running at his home in Southport, and is teaching art including clay and metal work at Brunswick Community College’s Southport Campus. With his infectious smile and welcoming friendly attitude, he hasn’t let his successes change his small town humble roots. He is content in his accomplishments, as he has had a great run with both his art and music careers. His continued successes are an inspiration to all artists and musicians alike.

musician, he has played with the likes of Andy Grammar and Jerry Lee Lewis. Being very successful in both music and art is a feat that many artists like myself only dream of. Hayden grew up in Farmville, VA and emanates from a very creative family that influenced both his artwork and his music. His grandmother taught him how to play piano and was also a very gifted painter of the impressionist style. His love for pottery started in the 6th grade when his art teacher gave him some clay. “I made this crazy form, and she entered it into an art show and it was accepted,” he said. He ended up going to college majoring in art and becoming a professional artist. His current body of work includes large clay slab built sculptures that are breath-

After having a successful career as a master jewelry maker in Arizona, Hayden’s success came to a crashing halt in 1995 with the diagnosis of heavy metals poisoning from working with so many metals. He was forced to immediately stop making art and go through treatment. “Reluctantly, I closed my jewelry studios. I was on top of the world and then it all crashed. It ruined my life for a while”, he said. After that, Hayden spent years trying to figure out what to do next since he couldn’t make the jewelry and he had to limit his pottery making because of the cadmium and other metals often used in many glazes. “I’ve always had music in my back pocket,” he said. And that is when he went back into music.

Art Out of the Box

It’s that time of year to eat outside before it gets too hot and the bugs’ wake up. And we listen to local bands playing on the waterfront. As I had dinner by the water one night, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to great bluegrass music at an open mic event. I was really impressed by all the local musical talent represented, but especially by how fast this one guy was playing keyboard. And once I found out he was also an artist, I knew I had to meet him.

some challenges. Hayden struggled with dyslexia and it proved to be a challenge when he was learning the piano. He found reading music nearly impossible since he couldn’t read the music leger from left to right as is traditionally done. Remarkably, he learned how to convert it in a way he could understand it.

You can find Hayden’s pottery sculptures at the Art Shak on Howe Street in Southport. You can also hear him play keyboard most every Monday night at the Dead End Saloon where he co-hosts the open mic night with John Tatum. Be sure to look for his classes this fall at Brunswick Community College in Southport on Lorde Street. This Sculpture is on display at the Art Shak

Hot Summer BBQ’s A few staff picks for easy BBQ delights. TOMATO SALAD

From Carla Edstrom. This is a great summer recipe for all those cherry sized tomatoes that overflow the garden, or that you pick up at the Farmer’s Market. Different colors and tomato varieties make it a nice summer salad. INGREDIENTS: 1 Cup canola oil ¼ Cup high quality balsamic vinegar 4 T sugar 1 tsp. salt Fresh ground black pepper to taste 3 green onions sliced ¼ Cup chopped parsley 15-18 fresh Basil leaves, finely cut or shredded ¼ tsp. Ground Thyme 2 cloves Garlic, minced 2 pounds Tomatoes cut into quarters for large and halved for small For Bruschetta: 1 whole baguette type bread sliced 1 clove Garlic Olive oil Combine all ingredients except tomatoes in large bowl; stir. Add tomatoes. Can increase the amount of tomatoes if needed. Allow to marinate for 3-4 hours in the refrigerator, several is even better. Tomatoes will give off more liquid as they marinate.

Use leftovers to make bruschetta. Slice baguette and brush with high quality olive oil. Grill on skillet or grill pan until toasted. Rub on whole garlic clove. Top with the tomatoes.

PINEAPPLE CASSEROLE

From Lisa Stites. This recipe was given to my Mom and I by my Aunt Cathy, my Mom’s siter-in-law. The women in my Mom’s family are some of the nicest you’ll meet, and my Aunt Cathy is no exception. This was her traditional offering at all our summer gatherings. It’s easy to make, always a crowd favorite, and can be served hot or cold. INGREDIENTS: 1 cup sugar 1/4 lb butter 4 eggs 6 slices bread, cubed 20 oz. crushed pineapple Cream together the butter and sugar. Add eggs and mix until incorporated. Stir in bread cubes and pineapples (with juice). Pour into a lightly greased square casserole dish and bake on 325 degrees for 1 hour. This recipe can be doubled and baked in a 9x13 casserole dish. Place a cookie sheet on the rack beneath the casserole to catch any juices that bubble over while baking.

POTATO SALAD

From Ami Brown. This recipe came from my mom, and it’s always a hit at Summer functions. 2lbs Boiled Potatos (I like red potatoes) 3 or 4 Hard Boiled Eggs 1 Cup of Chopped Celery (5-6 stalks) 3/4 Cup Chopped Green Onion 3/4 Cup Mayo (Dukes) Salt & Pepper to taste Cool, and peel potatoes and dice into cubes. Peel eggs and cut up into loose chunks. Combine all ingredients and mix together thoroughly. If it’s too dry or sticky, add another tablespoon of mayo. If you like it tangy, add a small spoon of mustard. (I like mine without) Refrigerate overnight for the best taste.

CROCK POT CORN ON THE COB

From Kris Beasley. This is about the best thing since sliced bread if you ask me! I just love this recipe for making corn on the cob in my crockpot or slow cooker. It is a great way to fix up a batch of 6-8 ears for a cookout with family and friends. INGREDIENTS 6-8 Ears of Corn- Shucked and Cleaned ¼ Cup of Water ¼ Cup Butter-Melted 1 Tbsp Lemon Juice 3 Tbsp Fresh Parsley-Minced 1 Tbsp Fresh Chives- Minced (I used Freeze Dried) Salt and Pepper to Taste Place corn in slow cooker. Cover with ¼ cup water. Cook on high for 2½ to 3 hours. Drain. Mix all ingredients except salt and drizzle over corn. Toss to coat and sprinkle with salt.

BABY BACK RIBS ON THE GRILL

“A foolproof, simple recipe for the most tender, delectable ribs you’ve ever had. Follow the directions exactly, and success is guaranteed!” INGREDIENTS: 1 tablespoon ground cumin 1 tablespoon chili powder 1 tablespoon paprika Salt and pepper to taste 3 pounds baby back pork ribs 1 cup barbeque sauce Preheat a gas grill for high heat, or arrange charcoal briquettes on one side of the barbeque. Lightly oil the grate. In a small jar, combine cumin, chili powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Close the lid, and shake to mix. Trim the membrane sheath from the back of each rack. Run a small, sharp knife between the membrane and each rib, and snip off the membrane as much as possible. Sprinkle as much of the rub onto both sides of the ribs as desired. To prevent the ribs from becoming too dark and spicy, do not thoroughly rub the spices into the ribs. Store the unused portion of the spice mix for future use. Place aluminum foil on lower rack to capture drippings and prevent flare-ups. Lay the ribs on the top rack of the grill (away from the coals, if you’re using briquettes). Reduce gas heat to low, close lid, and leave undisturbed for 1 hour. Do not lift the lid at all. Brush ribs with barbecue sauce, and grill an additional 5 minutes. Serve ribs as whole rack, or cut between each rib bone and pile individually on a platter.

ay the tree of liberty take root in the center of the earth, and its branches spread from pole to pole.” It was one of many patriotic toasts that day, at our first recorded Fourth of July celebration in 1795. Smithville residents and captains of the vessels in the harbor enjoyed a “plentiful” dinner under a large awning on the Fort Johnston grounds.

LOOKING BACK

They gave speeches and toasted the anniversary of their independence. One observer noted that the toast ”the sovereignty of the United States, and the day that gave it birth” received three cheers, three volleys from the troops and three gun fires. The toasts may be a thing of the past, but the celebration continues. Probably the largest Fourth of July celebration in the state, our festival has evolved over 200 years from a one-day event of speeches, toasts and gun salutes to the present multi-day festival bringing thousands to our town. Independence Day celebrations of the early years are recorded fairly consistently up until the Civil War. At that time, records are missing, but we know that from 1862 to 1865 the Fort Fisher Confederate Commander, Col. William Lamb, fired the traditional 13-gun salute marking the day, most likely in the direction of the Union blockade. Over the years, the festival has featured a variety of activities, some of which have 32 Southport Magazine / JUNE 2017 / www.SouthportMag.com

been abandoned and some still in place. They had common goals, however, aimed at community involvement, recreational fun and patriotic celebration – all still important today. In 1890, a newspaper account related that people came by steamer from Wilmington to enjoy the festivities. There were orations and singing by 42 young women representing the different states of the union at that time. Rowing and sailing races took place, capped off with fireworks off Battery Island. The 1925 celebration included a greased pole with a purse on top, baseball game, swimming contests, ferris wheel,merry-goround, and a greased pig run. Perhaps the pigs might be an exciting addition to our festival today. By the 1950’s, the celebration had been named the Live Oak Festival and featured parades and pageants for beauty queens. The 1960’s brought more local organizations into the mix, changing the festival events to reflect a wider array of activities.

The Southport Jaycees held a boat raffle in 1962, the winner being announced at the Whittler’s Bench on the riverfront. The following year, the Southport Junior Woman’s Club started an arts festival and the Associated Artists of Southport sponsored a crafts fair. Because these new events were very popular, Southport city officials recognized the growing value of the festival to our community. They appointed one of their aldermen to head up the festival committee and help coordinate the various activities and community groups involved. Wayne Berry, festival committee historian, related how important the community groups were in raising money for festival expenses. “So many people were involved. They held bake sales, barbecues, all kinds of things. It was a lot of labor and time. But it also made the event more inclusive because so many people were supporting it.” In 1972, the festival was incorporated as the North Carolina Fourth of July Festival, Inc. as a non-profit organization. As the attractions grew and funding needs rose, the festival moved from relying on community fund-raising activities to a model of sponsorships. But not all the activities were keepers. In the 1970’s the festival had shrimp boat races. As anyone who has witnessed shrimpers on the river, they don’t move fast. As Wayne Berry related, “Shrimp boats aren’t really built for racing. Also they are their owners’ livelihoods, and if they blew an engine in a race that might kill their whole season.” The races were abandoned after three years. There were other activities like horse shows and motorcross races that didn’t continue. And the festival’s own beauty pageant was discontinued due to cost reasons. Other attractions remain popular to this day. The parade is the signature event, with the popular Sudan clowns and the Shriners just two of the participants delighting adults and children alike. The arts and crafts fairs, food vendors and music concerts are staples that bring people back every year. Patriotic events like the veterans’ recognition and flag retirement program keep the emphasis on the meaning of the day. The naturalization ceremony is a relatively new event, added in 1996. The people participating in the ceremony take the Oath of Allegiance as the final step in their quest for citizenship. Wayne Berry described that first ceremony. “I’m not sure that many have ever witnessed this, but it was moving. Not only were the participants overjoyed to the

LOOKING BACK

point of tears, the spectators were too. It was quite impressive.” And of course the fireworks display is the traditional highly-anticipated Fourth of July event. Ours has always been popular, but one time it didn’t go well. Before firework displays were regulated, our event was managed by volunteers. On the fourth of July in 1973, on a barge in the river, the volunteers prepared for their big display. It went badly. “All the fireworks blew up at one time,” said Wayne Berry. “For several minutes, you could hear a pin drop because we didn’t know if the people were okay. Some jumped overboard, not even knowing how to swim. But it turned out everyone was safe.” Thankfully, today we rely on professional contractors to produce the fireworks event, which has since gone off with a bang, safely. Most recently, in 2013, we had the distinction of having two parades. Again, Wayne Berry remembers that event. “When the movie Safe Haven was here, they first thought about using the actual parade. Then they realized they couldn’t stop the parade and refilm. So they put on another parade for the film, including local floats and community residents. They kept having to go around and around, reshooting several times before getting the right footage.” It was just another event in the colorful life of the NC Fourth of July Festival, centuries old but always new.

SAVOR

You Won’t Leave Hungry!

Bring your sandy toes down to Kai Joe’s. STORY BY: ALYSSA CROUSON

Kai Joe’s has a friendly and refreshing atmosphere that envelops you the moment you get out of your car. They have an outdoor eating area that is nothing less than charming, and the servers are cheerful and polite, making the visit more than worth it. There is a conveniently fresh selection of tacos, burritos, nachos and more delightful treats that you can eat there or take to go. THE LOCATION IS PERFECT! The local feel allows your time there to feel homey and welcoming. You will find them at 4722 E Oak Island Dr. Dropping by for a bite to eat after a day at the beach is almost too easy considering the beach is just a few minutes away. Their outdoor seating allows the sandiest of people to sit and enjoy a Hawaiian-inspired meal. The decor is a garden-style area with a few picnic tables and other smaller tables, with potted plants, flowers and bug-spray bottles to protect their customers from bugs. This is a convenient idea that I have never seen before. Cute, colorful round chairs circle a smaller table bringing the space together. The decor is Hispanic-themed with cacti and skulls.

Make sure and try some deep fried Mexican street corn with your $2 Kai-joe taco $3 chicken taco and 4 shrimp taco with pineapple peach salsa

TACOS, BURRITOS, NACHOS AND MORE! A wide selection is offered at Kai Joe’s, from tacos and burritos to nachos and all the way around to fried green tomatoes and fried pickles. There is a little something for every kind of eater. The produce is fresh and from other local businesses. The menu changes sometimes by season and what is fresh at the time. Austin makes all of the sauces and salsa from scratch, and the tacos are cooked to order. The owner’s favorites are Bubba’s Nachos because of the large quantity and diversity of ingredients.

THEY HAVE SPECIALS CHANGING EVERY WEEK! This week they offer 2 shrimp tacos with lettuce, cheese and your choice of beans or salad, all for $11. Their most popular item is the “Big Momma” burrito that has lettuce, pico de gallo, black beans, rice and your choice of meat. It is definitely called a Big Momma for a reason. It is half a pound, and you must come here with a big appetite to be able to finish it on your own. When I went, I ordered a Big Momma. I had to take half of it home with me because there was so much food. I didn’t mind taking some home because I could eat it again for lunch the next day. Taco Tuesday is always a great day to stop by. Every Tuesday they serve $2 tacos, making this specific day of the week extra busy. The prices of their food is reasonable, and it ranges from $3-$14.

KAI BY THE SEA. I loved getting to know about the owners, Alexis and Austin. They have always wanted to open a restaurant and it seemed to have always been their dream. Austin grew up here in North Carolina, and when his sister moved to Hawaii, Alexis and Austin followed. They both loved Hawaii and the love they had for that place inspired their food and their son’s name, Kai Joseph. The word kai means “the sea” in Hawaiian, and many of Austin’s creations are influenced by the cooking in Hawaii. After 2 years, they returned here and dove head-first into starting up a business. They had tried other jobs before, but nothing was as satisfying as cooking. This truly is something they love to do, and they’re very good at it.

A PASSION FOR THE RESTAURANT BUSINESS. Their passion for the restaurant business and cooking is inspiring; they started it all by themselves and just took off running with their dream to have their “own little place”. Tacos and burritos were not

something they had thought of before, but there is nothing quite like them in the area. Tacos seemed to be a type of food they can mix up and add their own fresh twist to.

Everything was put on the line for this restaurant, and they have worked very hard to accomplish their big dream. They opened in December of 2016 and have high hopes for the future. They stay busy throughout the day and are open from 8am to 8pm Monday through Saturday and from 11am-8pm on Sunday. They aspire to one day have an inside, sit-down place. Once this location kicks off, they hope to open another location, but they would make sure that it was still family oriented, located on the east coast and also near the beach.

This lovely establishment is a great addition to the island and an amazing inclusion to the community. Come visit Kai Joe’s and experience the best burritos and the nicest people in town!

For more information visit their Facebook, Kai Joe’s or call them at (910) 622-1509.

HOMESTYLE Every inch of this home has been lovingly and thoughfully designed. (And that’s a lot of inches) Everywhere you look, something WOW’s you. From the large open fllor plan, to the placement of the palm trees outside, to the smallest detail and craftmanship on the woodwork. The curves of the design mimic the ocean waves and gentle rolling shape fo the dunes. I love that this house looks like it belongs in a place like this. It’s a natural flow and style that hit every mark and passes with flying colors all aroud. The front door calls you in, “inviting” doesn’t do it justice. You can’t help but be amazed by the grandure, but somehow you still feel very much at home. It’s a calm home, with a softness that makes you never want to leave.

The views speak for themselves, they are breathless and without obstruction. Covered porches make outdoor dining simple yet elegant. The second floor balconies make the perfect way to get sun all day.

I love the decor. It’s definitely ocean and beach inspired, but also feels a bit glamorous and delicate. The seafoam greens and sky blues mixed with lots of creams and whites make the windows the real focal point. The decor helps brings the outside IN. The colors do not distract from the real beauty of the views. The textures are also an interesting detail, softness, with originality and perfect color choices everywhere you look. The beautiful hardwood floors add that natural touch, and warmth to balance the whole space.

This home offers a balance of elegant beach design without being gimmicky or beachy. It feels like a 5 star beach spa retreat.

The master suite with balcony and spa-like bathroom feels more like a five star hotel than a bedroom. You will wake up to waves crashing and seagulls calling, as you step outside to a perfect spot to have your morning coffee. The oversized soaker tub lets you relax in luxury from head to toe. The formal dining room is elegantly traditional with trimwork and crown moldings. The chandelier gives a delicate touch to the formal design of the room, and still feels very cozy. When it comes down to describing the perfect location and the perfect house - I can’t think of another property that fits this bill. It offers you everything you could dream of and more. The beach is private, the views are endless and the house is immaculate. The only downside to this property I see, is that you would expect to have company every weekend! You might have to “limit” your availability once all your friends know where you live. But I guess that is the small price you have to pay to enjoy paradise every day of the year. I really don’t think this home will last on the market much longer - once you’ve seen it, you’re not going to want to leave.
