Yachts, Music & More It feels like Summer is officially here with all the tourists in town, festivals and warm weather. This issue really highlights the tremendous amount of events going on in our region; from boating to markets to festivals and non-stop Summer music. There truely is something for everyone. The local Yacht Clubs offer some great comeraderie and loads of community involvement.

The craft and produce markets are starting back up this month too, that get’s me super excited. I love to pick up fresh fruit and explore the local hand made items too. They make great gifts for out of town family. Make sure to keep this issue so you can refer to the Summer Music section in the middle, it runs from May through to August. Enjoy!

Southport’s Annual Memorial Day Observances Monday, May 29, 2017

There are two local organized clubs that I researched and the main focus of these clubs are boat related, safety education and social activities. They both seem to be great choices if you want to get involved with your community, enjoy the water, go on cruises and have fun. I’m sure there are many other loose yachting, fishing, sailing or cruising groups that are marina based too. Southport Yacht Club is a relatively young club, about four years old, but are a strong group. They are set up as a non-profit and currently have about 106 members with 55 boats. Based here in Southport, they have minimal yearly fees with plenty of social, educational and cruising opportunities. I sat down with Commodore Sam Johnston to learn more about the club. “The Mission of the Southport Yacht Club is to encourage and promote all aspects of yachting in the spirit of good sportsmanship and camaraderie. The Club is committed to creating a Corinthian atmosphere by blending a friendly social environment with a variety of sailing and cruising programs in which members and their families may participate.” The SYC is founded on the basic tenant that all members should be active members and that participation of all members in both boating and social activities is vital to growing its membership.

It’s a fun way to get to know each other and be part of a boating family. In May for instance, Loco Jo’s is hosting a party where everyone brings a side dish and gathers for good times. They also have community activities too, such as volunteering to judge local contests, setting up a marine market to sell your used boating equipment, oyster roasts, Frogmore stew and a chili cookoff. This club seems to offer everything and more that you would want in a sailing or boating-social club. If you are new to the area, and if you love boats (but don’t have one) this could be perfect opportunity to learn more about boating, have fun and meet some super nice people too. Some of their cruises this year include: Myrtle Beach, Cape Lookout, Ocracoke, Charleston, Banks Channel, Wilmington and Bald Head Island. Fleet) Series races. This kind of race allows every boat to start on an equal playing field. Kind of like a handicap in golf. The races are held on Saturdays and do not conflict with any other local sailing races. This is pretty exciting, the waterfronts will be full of even more of those beautiful sails this Summer. The boats usually range from 20 ft – 48ft and the members’ ages range from their mid 30’s up to Seniors. In June, the Lone Palm Regatta takes the spotlight, with 50 plus boats all racing for that coveted prize. American Fish hosts the after party and awards ceremony – not to miss this one. Here are the upcoming races: Apr 29 – River, May 20 – Ocean, Jun 17 – Lone Palm Regatta, July 8 – Ocean, Aug 19 – Ocean, Sep 9 – River, Sep 23 – River, Oct 14 – Ocean. It’s also a special opportunity for local businesses to get involved, as corporate race sponsorship is available too. A few businesses have already stepped up like Re/Max Essential in Southport. In addition to the races, there are monthly socials where all the members get together to eat and talk boats. (or just talk)

are based at the end of Fish Factory Road, by South Harbour Village Marina, with an amazing Club House there. Their membership fee is a little more pricey, but you get full use of the clubhouse and all its perks. Celebrating their 25th anniversary, they are currently having a membership drive with discounted fees, but you have to join soon to get the special rate. They have about 120 members with a similar age range of 40’s to Seniors. The club house was designed by award winning architect Rick Bandera. It has stunning detail, arches, sliding barn doors, amazing light pouring in and huge garage

The Commodore, Linda Schrum, says that the Cape Fear Yacht Club, is more than just a social club. “We are a family.” I get the feeling that everyone in the club feels part of this family. The warmth and inviting environment makes it hard to believe otherwise. If you like boat cruises – they have plenty of those too. Some of their destinations include: Bald Head Island, Wilmington, Myrtle Beach, Carolina Beach, Charleston and New Bern. They have themed social outings coming up like Casino Night and a Kentucky Derby Party.

Their PHRF Series Races are May 13, June 3, June 24, July 15, Aug 5, Aug 26, Sept 16. They also host the Rocket Regatta every year. This year it will be on August 12th. I can whole heartedly say that both these Yacht Clubs have a lot to offer someone looking to join. They participate in a variety of activities on the water and on land. They have full social calendars that looks like heaps of fun. They are engaged with the local community and feel like a closeknit family. If you are new to the area, or a long time resident and interested in joining either group, check out their websites and facebook pages. Have a chat to the membership chair or Commodore. You will surely make friends in the process. There have been a few other Yacht Clubs in the past that have come and gone, but these two are definitely here to stay. If you get sea sick, there is a club in St James could be perfect. It’s the Model Boat Club, and they build and race model boats… no life jacket required. You can keep your feet dry on land and still play with boats in the water.

I have to mention the supportive local Marinas too. They play a big part in servicing and housing the boats in the area. Without these Marinas, there would probably be no Yacht Clubs. Thank you…

- Thursdays in the Park (Franklin Square Park) Music under the stars is always a big hit, and the City of Southport has plenty of concerts scheduled this year to keep everyone entertained. Bring a blanket or chairs, and sit among the stately oak trees in the park. Snacks or dinner are also welcome additions to the evening, and some Southport eateries even make boxed meals to take to the park. The concerts are the result of a partnership between Downtown Southport, Inc. and the City of Southport Departments of Parks and Recreation and Tourism. “We are excited to be offering so many concerts this year,” said Heather Hemphill, Southport’s Director of Parks and Recreation Department. “With the support of

local business sponsorships, Downtown Southport, Inc. has enabled Southport to increase the number of concerts from five in 2016 to 14 this year.” The concerts run from 6 to 8 p.m. and are free and open to everyone. Even dogs are welcome to hang out with their human counterparts. “We are confident the new concert series will be popular with our visitors, and will also become a weekly must-do for people fortunate enough to live here,” said Randy Jones, Southport’s Director of Tourism. Anyone with a vehicle such as a truck from 1926 or a new Corvette or Mustang can join the Club. Car owners love the chance to show off their vehicles as much as car enthusiasts love to see them. But for the Cape Fear Cruisers, this event is also a way to raise money for charity. The Club is a 501(c)(3), and proceeds from the show will benefit local charities; the Club has given as much as $10,000 a year to local charities. The Southport Police Department will raffle off a bicycle and a child safety seat at the car show as well. Registration is from 9 a.m. to noon, and awards will be given out at 2 p.m. There will also be a 50/50 raffle and door prizes.

The most important detail is that the tide will be flowing with the paddlers, making this an easy race even for beginners. The entry fee is $20, or $30 the day of the race. There will be shuttles to take kayakers from Blue Water Point to the Rec Center before the race starts; there will not be any shuttles after the race. The first 75 participants will receive a t-shirt. A limited number of rental kayaks are available prior to race day. There are categories for age and gender, and categories for double kayaks as well. There’s also a contest for the best “environmental theme” costumes. Kayaks racers will pick up cards along the route, and the paddler with the best hand will win a special award. We got a chance to educate parents about preventive care for young children. This was our first year hosting 'Give Kids a Smile' and it was a HUGE success. We provided dental services to over 50 children that day. We Kids got a chance to get to know our pediatric dentist, Dr. Liu. We also educated on hygiene procedures. Positive experiences help to offset the natural fear that develops as kids get older. 10. AND FINALLY, WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU SEEN IN THE LAST 20 YEARS IN HOW PATIENTS ARE TAKING CARE OF THEIR TEETH AND ORAL HEALTH?

One of the last things people want to think about is having a temporary crown come off or having to fit in a second visit to have a crown delivered. One of the fundamental pieces of technology we utilize within the practice to combat this issue is CEREC technology. Over ten years ago, we were the first practice in Brunswick County to introduce CEREC technology to our patients. CEREC allows us to make strong, esthetic, and durable all porcelain inlays, onlays, and crowns in a single visit -eliminating the need for a temporary restoration. The CEREC software and equipment has changed over the years, but our doctors continue to dedicate hours of training themselves and our team to stay abreast of the constantly improving technology. It's not magic -but it is amazing. We are able to take pictures of your teeth before and after the tooth is prepared for a crown with a special camera attached to a computer that creates 3D images of the teeth. The crown is then designed and customized for your tooth utilizing the CEREC software. Once the crown is designed, the design is sent to a milling unit that makes the crown while you watch. The actual milling process usually takes five to eight minutes. We then fit and finish the crown before cementing it in permanently. You leave with your permanent crown-no annoying temporary and no second visit. 9. WHAT IS THE LINK BETWEEN ANEMIA AND ICE- CHEWING Recent research indicates that pagophagia MAY actually be a sign of anemia (a lack of iron in the blood), which can lead to serious health complications, if left untreated. Scientists aren't sure exactly why the link exists, but they suspect it may be due to the oral inflammation caused by anemia. Such inflammation could conceivably spark an urge to seek relief in the form of ice. With a simple blood test, a doctor can tell you if you are an anemic ice chewer seeking the soothing cold of a good ice cube. 22 Southport Magazine / MAY 2017 / www.SouthportMag.com

The biggest change has been that patients are now more diligent and proactive in their dental care. Awareness for the link between overall health and serious chronic disease related to bacteria that begins in the mouth have put the focus on better oral hygiene and patients are responding. Also there have been so many technological advancements in dentistry. The money raised by CIS Thrift Shops support CIS Action for Success dropout prevention programs in all five middle schools right here in Brunswick County,” said Todd Beane, CIS Thrift Shop Operations Manager. The resale and thrifting industry is growing at a rate of seven percent per year, according to the National Association of Resale and Thrift Shops. NARTS attributes this growth to Americans becoming more

value-conscious and aware of the need to reduce waste and recycle clothes and goods. According to NARTS, resale or thrift shopping attracts customers from all economic levels. There is no typical thrift shopper, just as there is no typical thrift shop. No one is immune to the excitement of finding a treasure and saving money. Briton Campbell, Southport CIS Thrift Shop Lead Manager, believes thrifting has become more mainstream because of culture trends. “It has to do with people wanting to create a look from a different time period and not want to spend their money at a high end shop when they can get something that is authentically vintage from a thrift shop. It’s the best place to find authentic styles from different eras.” Beane notes spring cleaning is a great time to donate or to shop. “People are cleaning and organizing and emptying homes of clutter. As they say, ‘One’s man’s junk is another man’s treasure.’ You can find amazing items, some almost brand new, during this time of year because of all the donations coming in.” CIS Thrift Shops also work with other nonprofit organizations donating items that are not sold at our thrift shops to benefit even more individuals. Unfortunately, my dear sweet husband knows what kind of mood I’m in by what I’m listening to and how loud I have it playing. And if its classic rock playing really loud like Led Zeppelin, that could be a sign of danger. If there is an accompanying sound of pottery breaking, that is a definite ominous sign. Probably best to wait until I’m back to playing Bowie before entering the studio. With music being an important part of my life as both a singer and a potter, I am curious about how music influences other artists in their creative processes. It’s easy to understand why artists use music in their work and are moved by certain musical compositions because both art and music are able to express emotion without words. Georgia O’Keeffe created some of her early abstract paintings to convey a message without words, much the same way as music communicates.

Teaching art in the 1980’s and 90’s during a time when many art and music programs were being cut from the curriculum, Durstewitz was thankful to be able to find work as an art teacher. Her paintings of serene coastal life show her strong understanding of the watercolor medium. Even though she grew up by the ocean, she said that the lighting here is different than up north and it’s a wonderful change. “I find myself staring at the sky and the clouds like never before. The tranquility of the beach really speaks to me here,” she said. It’s easy to see how her watercolor paintings are influenced by classical music. I myself am drawn into her work and can almost hear the beach scenes calling to me. Her use of tranquil natural colors and her flowing brush strokes speak of peace. Her kind and gentle personality also shows through in her work. I’m confident that her former students cherished their time they spent in her art room. I know I surely would have. And so this week, I’ll be adding Vivaldi to my studio playlist. Durstewitz is an exhibiting member of the Associated Artists of Southport and sells her work at Franklin Square Gallery as well as being the workshop chairperson for the Waterway Arts Association, coordinating workshops at the new Bellinger Artworks studio in Calabash.

resh seafood is abundant in this area and the local restaurants really know how to deliver! Some of my favorite local dishes include the grouper salad at Provisions Company, the salmon at the Frying Pan and Island Way, the broiled scallops at Turtle Island, the Grouper Oscar at Oliver’s, and the crab cakes at Dead End Saloon. Mr. P’s offers delicious softshell crab fresh seasonally so I did a little research about this delicacy and the man hours that goes into sourcing this dish. SOFTSHELL CRAB A softshell crab is really a hard shell crab that has just shed its shell. It happens only a couple times a year and it only stays soft for about 3 hours. So you can imagine timing is everything. I had a chat to Kathy at Clem’s Seafood on Oak Island and she gave me the scoop on how they do it. The shedding period last for about 3-4 weeks in the Spring, but it can change from year to year. The live blue crabs are captured and placed in large holding tanks. They are monitored around the clock. Kathy monitors them sometimes in the day time, but she leaves the night time duty up to her husband, Jeff Clemmons – also known as “Clem”. As soon as the crab sheds its shell it is removed from the tank, harvested as a

fresh – soft shell crab. It only takes about 3 hours for the new softshell to become hard again….timing is crucial. A very short window of opportunity exists for this yummy favorite. Kathy said there is another opportunity in the fall where the crabs shed again, but with the time it takes, they only harvest in the Spring shed. A lot of restaurants do serve soft shell crab all year, but they would have been frozen. When you see a restaurant serving fresh soft shell crab seasonally in the Spring, then you know it’s going to be good! When looking up a recipe for softshell crabs, I found that less is more. They only need to be lightly floured and fried in butter for a short time, 3-4 minute on each side. The seasoning seems to be limited www.SouthportMag.com / MAY 2017 / Southport Magazine 29

SHAD ROE Another local southern tradition all about timing is Shad Roe. Shad is an American saltwater fish, a type of herring that spawns in fresh water at the start of spring. The American shad, a boney fish that is typically three to five pounds each, is prized not for its meat but for its eggs, a delicacy known as Shad Roe. These eggs sacs are only in the females and only during a very short during the early Spring. I was introduced to Shad Roe a few ago at an Easter Sunrise service in Virginia. They are not fishy at all, tender and a little gritty – but soft. They take on mostly the flavor of what they are cooked with. (Bacon is a nice choice) This Southern recipe from honest-food.net that sounds delicious. Ingredients 2 tablespoons kosher salt 1 pint cold water At least 1 roe sac per person 1/4 pound bacon 2 onions, sliced 1/2 teaspoon thyme 2 teaspoons honey 1 cup grits Salt and black pepper 3 tablespoons unsalted butter Flour for dusting 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley Lemon juice to taste Instructions Dissolve the salt in the cool water and submerge the roes in the brine for at least an hour, and up to 4 hours. The larger the roe sacs, the longer you will want to brine. About 45 minutes before you want to cook the roe, crisp the bacon. Leave about 3 tablespoons of bacon fat in the pan to cook the onions. Caramelize the onions in the bacon fat by cooking them over medium-low heat for 20 to 35 minutes, stirring occasionally. About 15 minutes into this process, Add the thyme, a pinch of salt, and the honey. When the onions are done, chop up some of the bacon and add it to the pan. Cook the grits and keep warm (I’m sure you know how to do that).

S2F returns June 14-18, 2017, featuring over 50 regional and national songwriters, with afternoon and evening events plus a full lineup on Father’s Day. The festival benefits ScreenDoor year long programs using songwriting to aid veterans and high needs children. A change this year is that S2F events are open to the public with no admission, so the event and yearround function depend entirely on community sponsorships and donations, (tax deductible). With the slogan “Building Community One Song at a Time,” S2F, guided by founder and Southport resident Louisa Branscomb, has brought a unique vision to our community: that of uniting people across individual differences through music, while also creating opportunities for a “front porch” style of bringing songwriters and listeners together in intimate settings surrounded by Southport’s unique commerce and its natural beauty. To date, the festival has presented some 200 songwriters in over 11 events in Southport, involved over 150 volunteers and countless Southport venues and businesses. Through festival proceeds and grants, Executive Director Branscomb, who is an internationally known songwriter with multiple Grammies and chart hits, combines her lifelong passion for songwriting with her expertise in trauma, families, and communities via the 501 c-3 ScreenDoor Songwriter Alliance. In addition to the community productions with S2F, she has formed and directed several programs with foster children and school children using songwriting to express their stories, then in turn share these in performances that benefit and inspire others. Notably, S2F favorites, the Howard Boys are inspiring groups throughout NC with songs created with Branscomb. Branscomb is also working to create various alliances to help veterans in NC.

A stellar initial festival lineup of national and local acts and a variety of musical styles includes Dark Water Rising, Jeanette and Johnny Williams, Sol-R Fusion, Chuck Larson, LaNelle Davis, Tommy Edwards, Brooksie Wells, Laura McLean, Karen Newsum, Jeremy Truett, James Archer, and Daniel Geutschow. The festival will be hosted by Louisa Branscomb and Friends of Distinction, featuring 16 year old ScreenDoor Songwriter Scholarship winner Micahlan Boney. Festival Coordinator Jayne Howard and the team of core volunteers are actively seeking your help. “Bringing in the kind of talent and numbers of artists we have enjoyed in the past will depend on community support, since the event is free to the community. Local dentist Aaron Wilharm and his wife Lindsay found themselves in this very situation upon the birth of their second child Addison. Lindsay notes, “There were no signs of Addison’s hearing loss, she simply failed the newborn hearing screening at the hospital as well as the follow-up screening given at the health department. “ She credits the mandatory laws requiring newborn hearing screening to be done at birth for early intervention. Often in years past, hearing loss was not detected until speech does not progress. “Once we knew Addison had hearing loss , the journey began to determine her exact loss and how hearing aids would help her. It is difficult to test a newborn because they can’t simply raise their hand when the sound is heard or repeat a sound to the audiologist.

“What I would want people to know about hearing loss is early intervention is key and like anything else, hard work,” In newborns, they measure brainwaves by applying electrodes to the head and stimulating sound. However, the baby must remain still and quiet and that is not easy! After multiple frustrating attempts to get an accurate audiogram, measurement of her hearing, locally we decided to go to UNC Hospitals. “ She states, “ I still can replay the moment and words when the audiologist told us Addison had severe hearing loss. I knew it could be worse but hearing is such a vital part to ones life. And

while Aaron and I were both in the medical field, we felt so helpless because it was what it was. There is no way to restore her natural hearing-- we could only provide her with the best technology, services, and the best environment in which to hear aided.” “At three months Addison received her first set of pink hearing aids. I have to say before this I had never seen a baby wearing hearing aids. But she was responding to sound and really enjoyed pulling them out to chew on the ear molds! By six months, we started speech therapy in Wilmington at a center funded by UNC Chapel Hill for children with hearing loss called CASTLE. We were intense with this therapy. We had weekly goals and were constantly focused on hem, her environment, her reaction to sound, and maintaining her hearing aids to function optimally.” However, at age 2 ½, Addison’s hearing loss progressed requiring further intervention with cochlear implants. Great strides have been made in the area of profound hearing loss in adults and children through the development of cochlear implants. The cochlea is the hearing portion of your inner ear. Damage to this area prevents sound signals from being sent to the brain. Cochlear implants are surgically implanted electronic devices which allow sound to be sent via the hearing (auditory) nerves to the brain. While hearing aids only make the sounds louder, Cochlear implants bypass portions of the inner ear and send direct stimulation to the nerve which sends it to the brain in a way that it can be interpreted as sound. There is an external and surgically implanted internal component to the Cochlear Implant. Addison received her first cochlear implant at age three. Despite being fearful of the outcome at first, Lindsay describes the amazing gift of technology. “This is a good lesson in faith…. Because not long after we made it through surgery and they

were activated did I realize they are miracles. She heard so much more and could hear in a more confident way. Not trying to make sounds out through background noise and extreme focus but she just could simply hear them! It still brings tears to my eyes. To watch your child struggle in simple ways and then start to come alive is pure joy.” Addison received her second implant to provide bilateral sound at the age of 4. At age 8, “to say she has succeeded de-

spite her disability is an understatement. We think she makes cochlear implants look cool! She has a focus, kind heart and maturity about her that is beyond her years.” A normal child, she does remove the implants at night and may have to find them after cartwheels in the grass. She is able to swim with them with a special case/swim cap device. Through this all, Lindsay credits the resources available to “guide and empower”

HEALTH them in the journey including UNC Chapel Audiologists and ENT physicians. Also, The CARE Project which was “starting locally but has since spread nationally by providing workshops and Retreats to families dealing with pediatric hearing loss. It provides emotional counseling, connects parents with incredible resources and educates them on how to best navigate this world of hearing loss. To us the Care Project was our normalcy in this difficult journey… parents like us that understood everything we were facing. In their generous spirit, the Wilharms have created their own foundation to support programs that helped them. It is called Addison’s Aid. (Please see bullet at end of this article for contact/donation info) Lindsay sums up their journey by saying, “What I would want people to know about hearing loss is early intervention is key and like anything else hard work. My advice to someone facing this challenge is to find a great audiologist/ENT. Not just a good one but an outstanding one- it is worth traveling to get better results. Also, search out people who have faced these challenges you are facing. Sometimes new hope goes a long way. And unconditional faith!

BRUNSWICK CIVIL WAR ROUND TABLE’S 7th Anniversary meeting to focus on a false remembrance of the Civil War. The Tuesday, May 2nd meeting of the Round Table marks this non-profit organization’s 7th anniversary. It will feature returning guest historian, Ed Bonekemper, prolific author, popular speaker, and he will focus his presentation on examining the accuracy of his topic entitled, “Myth of the Lost Cause.” Registration and refreshments for the Tuesday, May 2nd anniversary meeting will begin at 6:30PM at Hatch Auditorium on Caswell Beach. Everyone is invited to attend. The guest admission fee is $10, and can be applied toward the $25 annual membership dues. The Round Table continues to grow with each monthly meeting, and currently has over 1,150 members, making it the largest Civil War Round Table in the country.
