AY IS THE MONTH THAT NORTH CAROLINIANS REALLY EMBRACE their summer wardrobes. While March and April can be finicky, from chilly days to temperatures that dip down in the night, May is the warm precursor to summer fun. Thus, men break out their khaki shorts and Hawaiian shirts, while women dust off their sundresses. Finally, feeling the warmth of the sun on our shoulders is a bliss that cannot be denied! So, we gathered six local stores and their stunning models at the gorgeous Southport Marina to showcase this summer's smart wears. Erin and Corey Snapp, the husbandand-wife duo behind Snapp-Shot Photography, captured every detail from crocheted tank tops to sun hats and sandals—and even a hot cocktail dress! ESIGNED TO RAISE awareness about the Oak Island Sea Turtle Protection Program and our area's rich coastal habitat, the island's annual First Crawl Environmental Festival is a symbol of the beginning of sea turtle season, says Christy Ferguson, Recreation Program Supervisor for the Town of Oak Island. The nesting season starts in May, when turtle moms crawl upon the shore to lay their eggs. Through October, volunteer groups patrol the beaches in search of nests in order to protect the infants of the endangered species from harm. When hatching occurs 50 to 70 days after incubation, the groups are there to help guide the baby turtles to the sea; since turtles follow the light of the moon to the water, they can sometimes be confused by the lights of the homes and businesses on the island. Last year Oak Island monitored 93 turtle nests, according to Ferguson. The First Crawl Environmental Festival will be held on Oak Island at Middleton Park on Saturday, May 17th from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Middleton Park. The festival features educational booths, including information on Oak Island’s Sea Turtle Protection Program, marine rescue, and bird life. There will be arts and crafts booths, food vendors and games and inflatables for kids. Live outdoor music will begin with Dylan Alexander from 9:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. and will continue with the Cosmic Duo from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Both artists play a variety of music from oldies to current favorites. In addition to the activities in the park, the First Crawl Environmental Festival provides an opportunity to become involved by participation in the Turtle Triathlon Race. The relay race begins on festival day at 8 a.m. behind the Recreation Center at 3003 East Oak Island Drive. The first team member will launch off in a kayak or

canoe in Davis Canal and paddle to the 9th Street SE access dock, met by the second team member, who will bicycle over Middleton Bridge, down Dolphin Drive to 29th Street. There, the third team member will run to the finish line at Middleton Park. The whole race averages about 5.5 miles. Division awards will be given out at the festival bandstand around 10:30 a.m. Division awards will include age, family and business. Also, there will be a special contest for the team best dressed in sea turtle or environmental themed costume. The registration fee for the relay race is $45 per team before May 9th and $55 per team after May 9th. The first 30 teams will receive a T-shirt. The First Crawl Environmental Festival is sponsored by the Oak Island Parks and Recreation Department, which anticipated co-sponsors not finalized by press time. For more information, call Christy Ferguson at (910) 278-5518 or check out the Parks and Recreation Department online at www.oakislandnc.com.

OASTAL DWELLERS ARE no stranger to pelicans, sea gulls and herons. The occasional crow or finch frolicking within the grass of Franklin Square Park can be expected, too. While we may not know the scientific name for each member of the avian species, we at least have an appreciation for their delicate beauty and gift of flight. On Wednesday, May 21st, Mike Campbell—a Coastal Outreach Coordinator for the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission—will lead a free tour through the streets of Southport to educate bird lovers on the species who call our area home (or just stop by on vacation!), hopefully revealing new birds to eager eyes. The tour is sponsored by Coastal Water Watch and the City of Southport Parks and Recreation and Tourism departments. Beginning at 9 a.m., folks will meet at the Community Garden on Caswell Avenue, and the tour will take off via tram, bicycle, and/or golf cart. "We will see resident birds that are here year-round, as well as neo-tropical migrants that come from as far south as Bolivia and Peru," Campbell tells. "We will see

many species of birds that are in the area, but may never come to backyard feeders." Campbell has been with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission for 22 years. "I’ve always had an interest in wildlife, and I found that I really enjoy getting people outdoors to learn and appreciate the wildlife and other natural resources that are in our own backyards," he shares. Well-versed in the local avian population, Campbell hopes to see around 20 to 30 distinct species during the tour, including the White Ibis, Indigo Bunting, Orchard Oriole, and Yellow-throated Warbler. "And maybe a Painted Bunting," he imagines. The tour will finish in Caviness Park on Owens Street at 12 p.m. with lunch. Participants must bring their own packed lunch. While the tour is free, those interested must pre-register online at www. cityofsouthport.com or by e-mailing heather_hemphill@southportnc.org. For more information, call Carolyn Pryor of Coastal Water Watch at (910) 454-4479. For Campbell, educational programs such as the Birds of Southport tour are a fun way to promote conservation efforts. "The public benefits by learning about wildlife, and hopefully understands that this area is rich with an abundance and diversity of species. With that knowledge, the public can appreciate and take measures to continue to keep this area a beautiful place to live for both humans and wildlife."

ROWING UP, WHILE MY friends were listening to Backstreet Boys and Avril Lavigne, the inner console of my Honda Civic was filled with Janis Joplin, the Beatles, and The Carpenters CD’s. I still remember the first time I heard “Me and Bobby McGee,” and in that moment, I knew that music would never be the same to me. A flower child in another life, I have always believed artists like these have a way of captivating people of all ages. You can’t help but slow dance in your kitchen when you hear “Dream a Little Dream” by The Mamas and the Papas or use your hand as a drum stick against your car door as soon as the first opening beats of “Fortunate Son” by Creedence Clearwater Revival come over your radio. These bands and their intoxicating melodies have a way of making us float back in time where we feel invincible and, just for a moment, time stands still. The Doors' “Light My Fire” and “Hello, I Love You”, “Black Magic Woman” by Santana, and “Summer in the City” by The Lovin’ Spoonful are just a handful of bands and their songs that light a fire under Brunswick Little Theatre’s musical director Michael Stringer. The theatre company is inviting Southport residents to return to the '60s and '70s to pay their respects to the classics as they perform a free music revue entitled “American Band: Music of the Rock Revolution.” I had the opportunity to interview director Mark Deese and Stringer to learn about their vision for this upcoming show that will take place in downtown Southport’s Franklin Square Park this month. “I just really hope that the crowd can go back in time and understand once again how important this music is,” Deese encouraged. “To me, this music is the backbone of American history and I hope the audience will feel the same way.” The company seeks to resurrect these

artists and their music. “We hope the audience enjoys listening, and it might bring back some fond memories of an earlier time,” Stringer added. “We also hope it will inspire them to come to our other productions.” Last year Deese and Stringer presented a revue of the 1960s British Invasion which featured songs from The Who, The Rolling Stones, and much more. Titled “Talkin’ 'Bout My Generation," it was the theatre’s first unscripted, concert atmosphere. It was such an enormous success it became an inspiration for the upcoming performance: This May the music will encompass an assortment of folk, rock and pop tunes from 1965-1973. Stringer said last year’s show was so positive, they thought, Why not perform an American version surrounding roughly the same time frame? Deese reported last year's show truly was nothing short of a leap of faith and turned out to be even better than he imagined. “We performed for record crowds and received nothing but positive feedback regarding the quality of the product up onstage," he noted. "In fact, we were asked to come back for an encore production due to demand, and we were thrilled to accommodate this request.” And accommodate they have, along with the same musicians and vocalists. The band is comprised of drummer John Parker, bassist Joe Martino, musical director and keyboardist Michael Stringer, guitarists Jim Tewell and Stephen Gossin, and flutist and vocalist Natalie Flow. The vocalists include Charles Patton, Katie Deese,
Jen Iapalucci, and Mark Deese. Now, let’s be honest—one cannot perform songs from The Beach Boys and other great American classics without the “proper attire.” I had a hunch that costumes were to be involved in this musical extravaganza—or maybe it was just my bell-bottoms aching to come out of the closet. While the clothes, designed by Iapalucci, will be a surprise for showgoers until the event, folks can expect iconic looks of the era. Staying tied to the community of Southport is top on Brunswick Little Theatre’s list. Not only do they want to give back to the community but they want to showcase the amazing talent they have to offer. “We respectfully invite audiences to see our free shows in the park so that they understand the arts are alive and well in their community,” Deese explained. “There are so many talented performers to see throughout the year, whether in the park or inside on the theater stage.” The talent streaming through Southport is much to be admired, Stringer told me. “I was happy to discover upon moving to the area that we have a really fine talent pool in this community, enabling us to do quality shows," he assured. "The hard work of starting from scratch and working until it all finally comes together is really satisfying." Franklin Square Park provides a comfortable atmosphere for performers and the audience to enjoy the musical flair that Brunswick Little Theatre delivers. “It’s very informal and people can relax, listen and have a nice evening,” Stringer described. Brunswick Little Theatre promises an incredible performance, the inviting atmosphere of which will have the courageous swaying along to the sounds of a different time. Seeing the crowd sing and dance along to the music is Deese’s reminder why he puts his heart and soul into each performance. The show will run May 16th through 18th and May 23rd to 25th in Franklin Square Park, beginning at 8 p.m. nightly. Admission is free and there is ample space for lawn chairs and blankets. Visit www.brunswicklittletheatre.com for more information and a list of other upcoming shows.

RY STREET PUB AND Pizza is a place where, literally, everybody knows your name. Owner Sheila Barbee told me right when we started chatting that, “Dry Street is the place where the locals go.” A homey feel, the restaurant is more than just a pizza shop. Owners John and Sheila Barbee II have been providing a cozy refuge offering down-home cooking, pizza and other delectable tidbits for locals and visitors since 1996. Starting with just pizza, over the years their menu has blossomed, offering anything from soup and quiche to sandwiches on homemade bread, fish or shrimp tacos, to crab cake sliders, and even homemade desserts. The sweet end-of-meal treats include chocolate cake, hummingbird cake (made with pineapple, banana, cinnamon, nuts, and a cream-cheese frosting), key lime pie in the summer, and bread pudding in the winter. Their blueberry cobbler, which is offered everyday, one customer even deemed "X-rated," it is so good. What makes Dry Street so unique is that though their menu is sufficient to say the least, they still offer five to six original specials a day. All the desserts rotate, too, so the owners suggest calling ahead if you want one in particular. And all this aside, Sheila and John will make their customers what they want. If you like a certain kind of bread or are craving a kind of quiche or pizza—just ask, Sheila says. Chances are, they’ll be able to make it for you. At Dry Street, you don’t feel like you’re walking into a stuffy restaurant but rather your neighbor's house for a friendly meal. It helps that the restaurant resides in an old Southport home. Indeed, some of the Dry Street menu is named after some of their beloved customers—for example, “The Gwen." Sheila told me Gwen always wanted a turkey sub with feta, bacon and Italian dressing. Everyone else liked it so much, you now can find “The Gwen” on the menu. Sheila kindly shared with me how some

of her passion for her recipes comes from her mother. Growing up in Charleston, and her husband hailing from Caswell Beach, the Barbees' menu is inspired
by Southern cuisine. Sheila makes her mom’s vegetable soup, a comfort food from her own childhood, in addition to the crab cakes and hummingbird cake. “The soup was one of those things I knew would be there when I got home— homemade vegetable soup waiting on me,” Sheila told me, reminiscing about

visits with her mom. This sense of family permeates the restaurant, from the décor, staff, Sheila and Ashley (Sheila’s "left hand"), to even the garden of greens and fresh herbs out front. Plus, Dry Street is a family-run business. John and Sheila’s children even work in the restaurant, lending a hand where needed, when needed. Expanding on this feeling of kinship, Sheila told me, “What I really enjoy is it’s like family. I get to know my customers.” Some of her customers are there every day, a true testament to the feeling of home Dry Street exudes. Ashley, who does anything and every-

thing from marketing, waiting tables, baking and keeping the books, told me, “Everybody comes in and we know what they want—what they want to drink, what they’re going to order.” Since the menu and specials are so varied, there is truly something for everyone, every day. Salad and homemade soup for one, pizza for another, and a Reuben on thick rye is nothing short of variety. Dry Street also hosts parties and large groups, and if you call ahead, you can plan on reserving the screened-in porch for your gang. AY IS AUSSIE WINE month in Australia—and is there ever a lot to celebrate. Australia, once known primarily for its big “fruit bomb” wines or—dare I say it, the kangaroo with the yellow tail—has come a long way in the past few decades to become a real player in the world of fine wine. The wine industry in Australia dates back to 1788 when vine cuttings from the Cape of Good Hope were first brought to the penal colony of New South Wales. Although the attempt at winemaking from these first vines was not successful, other settlers did cultivate vines and the first Australian wine for sale domestically appeared in the 1820s. Today, wine is produced in every state with more than 60 designated wine regions. The major varieties are Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Sémillon, Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Sauvignon Blanc. Shiraz (also know as Syrah) was one of the original varieties brought to Australia and is certainly one of the most successful. There are still many vineyards scattered throughout the country with vines that are over 100 years old. It is grown in virtually every region in Australia and produces varying styles from cooler climate, medium-bodied and spicy wines to fuller bodied, richly flavored and textured warmer climate versions. Shiraz partners well with several other varieties. The classic blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre in varying proportions, has a long tradition (try the 2011 Torbreck Cuvee Juveniles, $25.99) as does the Shiraz Cabernet blend. More recently, co-fermenting a small proportion of Viognier with Shiraz has led to the trendy Shiraz Viognier style (try the 2009 d’Arenberg Laughing Magpie, $28.99). There are many fantastic regions for Shiraz but the most historic area with a large repository of old vines is the Barossa Valley. My husband, Joaquin, and I spent a week in the Barossa Valley in January, home to many of the world’s finest Shiraz. The Barossa, as it’s referred to by natives, is a laid-back area northwest of Adelaide. It reminded us of what Napa must have been 30 years ago with no crowded tasting rooms

and winemakers pleased to have a couple of Americans visiting. We are big fans of Shiraz and had the pleasure of tasting it at several of our favorite wineries. Perhaps Australia’s most famous wine is Penfolds Grange. Grange is an Australian icon and considered to be among the world’s best wine. Wine critic Robert Parker of The Wine Advocate has written that Grange "has replaced Bordeaux's Pétrus as the world's most exotic and concentrated wine.” While Penfolds has several affordable wines in its portfolio, Grange sells for hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars. While visiting the winery, we tasted the 2004 Grange, which sells for over $500 a bottle. Not an everyday wine, for sure. One of our best experiences was time spent with Ben Glaetzer, one of today’s star winemakers. The Glaetzer family has been making wine in The Barossa since the late 1800s. Ben has won numerous prestigious awards for his wines and was named The Wine Advocate’s Wine Personality of the Year in 2005. Robert Parker described Ben as “showing an exquisite talent for accessing fabulous vineyards and turning out world class wines from old-vine Shiraz and Grenache. His Amon-Ra Shiraz is one of the great
new wines of Australia, made with power as well as elegance. This is a serious talent who has exploded on the wine scene with a brilliant array of wines." The Glaetzer philosophy focuses simply on the production of small-volume, superpremium red wines. The Glaetzer range consists of four individual offerings: Wallace Shiraz Grenache, Bishop Shiraz, Anaperenna Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon and the flagship Amon-Ra Shiraz. Interestingly, Ben personally designs the graphic black and white labels for these wines. Ben hosted a leisurely lunch for us under a spreading oak tree and brought a case of his wines for us to sample. We began with a new label he is collaborating with as winemaker called Heartland. Two of our favorites were the 2009 Heartland Cabernet Sauvignon ($19.99) and the 2010 Heartland Directors’ Cut Shiraz ($40.99). We eventually worked our way up to the 2012 Amon-Ra Shiraz ($120), made from fruit from 130-year-old vines and recently rated 97+ by The Wine Advocate. There are dozens of great wineries to visit in South Australia. For wine lovers, it is truly a special place. Amanda Carbonell is the owner of Uncorked by the Sea Wine Shop and Gallery, located at 602 N. Howe St. in Southport. For more info, call (910) 454-0633 or visit www.uncorkedbythesea.com. However, there’s a problem—we are young of spirit and old of joints! Many of us are playing with knees or hips that are mechanical wonders. We’re playing with back or shoulder pain. Our postures have deteriorated, along with our focus, and Tylenol may be a part of our pre-round routine. But we can improve the situation. My personal solution is yoga. I’m not claiming yoga will lower your handicap—though it probably will. However, there are research studies confirming an improved range of motion, flexibility, balance and focus with yoga resulting in an improved game. A recent study examined the reduced club head speed of 34 senior golfers. The golfers were all male, their median age was 64.5 years. The study found two major physical factors impacting club head speed: flexibility of the torso and upper body strength. The study targeted these two areas of the body with specific yoga postures and 32 golfers were able to increase club head speed and, thus, distance. So, let’s get started with flexibility in the torso. We’ll begin with a Shoulder / Hip Disassociation Stretch.

below shoulder height with palms together. Inhale deeply, and on your exhale, open up your trunk and shoulders by bringing the left arm toward the floor. Note: keep your knees pinned together. Repeat five to 10 times and switch sides. Use a pillow under your head if you are more comfortable. Place a towel under your lower knee or between your knees if you feel more comfortable. This is an easy yoga pose, almost too easy! But doing it, and doing it three times a week for five minutes, is the key. Lateral Reach and Stretch
Resting on your shins, separate your knees and sit back on your heels. Note: If this is uncomfortable for the knees, place a rolled up towel behind your knees. Spread your hands wider than shoulder width apart and stretch your arms toward the front of your yoga mat. Keep the glutes attached to the heels. Hold for five deep breaths. With your arms stretched out and fingertips to the floor, “walk” the fingers and arms over to the right as far as possible, focusing on the stretch in the left lat and shoulder. Relax your head. Hold for five breaths and switch sides.
Twisting Table / Lat / Shoulder / Upper Back Stretch Begin on your hands and knees. Place your right hand behind your neck, and on your inhale, rotate your spine from your core as your lift your right arm and look out to the right. Focus on the abdominals as well as mid-back extension. Then, tuck your arm and head down and into your left side. Repeat on the other side. Early season fishing preparations Story by Captain Alan Beasley
B
Y NOW, IF YOU'RE LIKE
me, you are ready to get a fishing trip under way, or you've probably already hit the water. But are you really ready to go? Is your gear in tip-top shape? You should make sure it is before you get out there and hook a big one just to lose it because your line was frayed from last year or brittle from the sun and outside elements. Take it from me, it happens to each of us, and a little pre-fishing preparation is all you need to prevent such snafus. These days, if you’re taking the time off and spending money on a fishing trip, you need all the odds in your favor for catching something to make it worthwhile. Unless, of course, you’re just going for the relaxation—but I can’t do that. I have to bring something home to Momma for dinner! Here are a few ideas on what to do to get you and your gear ready for another season of fine Southport-area fishing. The first thing on the list is the most used item of all.
The Rod & Reel Make sure to do maintenance on the reel, such as lubrication. Grease in the gears and lubrication on the moving parts can help make sure the reel will perform at its best when you need it to. This maintenance will also help you take a close look at the reel so you catch any loose screws or parts, as well as nicks or dings that could lead to failure right when you have a big fish testing you and your gear for the first time. If you find that your reel needs major repair beyond simple maintenance and lubrication, take it to a local tackle shop for assistance. Most do repairs or have a rod and reel expert to do repairs for them. This is a must if you don’t have experience, because one lost spring can be the end of your attempt, and that will only cost you more when you take it for service. Next, make sure the rod is in good shape from tip to handle, carefully checking the eyes for nicks or cuts and looseness. If there is a split or cut in the inner eye ring, it can cut your line when it’s under tension faster than a razor on dental floss—and there goes the first fish of the season, swimming away with a bunch of
line as bling to show his buddies who won the first battle. That’s not good for the fish either. So, make sure each eye is OK, and again, if you need one replaced other than the tip, seek expert help, especially if you spent good money on that rod. Changing a tip is not so hard to do yourself and a good tip replacement kit can be purchased from a local tackle shop. A few tips of mine are to apply a light coat of wax to the cork handle. The same wax used on surfboards called Mr. Zog's Sex Wax is great. I also wipe down the rod portion only with Rain-X to help repel the saltwater and make cleanup easy with a light spray-off from the water hose. Once your rod and reel is in good shape, install new line on the reel. New line to start the fishing season helps ensure that all of the line on the reel is in good condition. The line may look great as far as the rod length, but it may have hidden issues a few layers deep on the spool. A nick in the line over time gets weaker and can snap very easily under minimal pressure, so replace all of it. Be sure to recycle that line to keep it out of landfills or from getting back in the water somehow. Tackle Now to finish up, check out all of your tackle for rusty hooks, looseness or discoloration of lures. You need to make sure you have more than enough of everything you use, from hooks to swivels to weights to plastic beads to favorite colors of grubs and lures. Check your dip net, your bait net, your cast net for holes, and anything else you normally take. Taking the time over the winter or spring season to straighten up and restock your tackle box is a great idea. It keeps your mind on fishing and will certainly help increase your odds of catching and landing that first fish like a pro! Preparing your boat will be covered in another month’s topic, so check back for that. Make no mistake that a little bit of prefishing season preparation is worth a ton when that first battle between you and that starving 28” red drum kicks off behind Bald Head Island this spring. Again, as always, we promote the local small business owners, and I encourage you to use the local tackle shops for all of your fishing tackle needs and for great fishing and catching advice!

wealth To save or to shred, that is the question! Story by Greg Ochipa

RE YOU A "PACK RAT" OR "purger" when it comes to your personal documents? The best approach is somewhere in between the two extremes. Try these suggestions for a sensible but streamlined way to manage your paperwork. While you're clearing out the paper, it may be a good time to update—or create—a home inventory, too. Keep Forever Because photocopies or scanned images of legal papers usually are not valid, store originals of these documents in a fireproof container or safe deposit box: • Marriage licenses, divorce and custody decrees • Birth, adoption and death certificates • Wills, trusts, financial and medical powers of attorney • Passports and citizenship papers • Military records Keep While You Own the Asset • Property abstracts, mortgage documents, insurance policies and receipts for home improvements • Vehicle titles, purchase or lease documents and auto insurance policies Receipts, warranty certificates and operating instructions for household items • Stock certificates and retirement plan records Keep for at Least 7 Years While your tax returns can generally be audited for three years after you file, that period can increase to seven years if the IRS suspects fraud or unreported income. And naturally, you must be able to produce all supporting documentation. The good news? The IRS will accept legible electronic records, so copy everything to a DVD
or flash drive and store it with your "keep forever" documents. (Don't forget to delete any tax-related records from your hard drive for security reasons.) For more information, check out IRS Publication 552. Scan and Save Digitally or Shred Unless you have to retain originals of these documents for business purposes, these space-wasting items can be stored digitally and/or shredded each month: • ATM receipts, bank statements and paystubs • medical, utility and credit-card bills. Go Paperless When Possible Many companies offer paperless billing and payment options, so many of your recurring expenses can become paper-free transactions, eliminating the need to write checks or buy stamps. You can even choose to receive automated reminders so you won’t overlook due dates. To protect your private information, sign up for electronic billing on encrypted web sites using the "https://" prefix. And to save even more trees each month, opt out of junk mail lists. The Federal Trade Commission recommends contacting the Direct Marketing Association to reduce unsolicited mail. Other services, such as Catalog Choice and Do Not Mail, also may help reduce the amount of junk mail you receive.

Southport Magazine (SM): How did you become a local owner and operator with Merry Maids? Donna Parker (DP): My brother and his wife introduced us to Merry Maids approximately 13 years ago when they purchased their first Merry Maids franchised territory. We loved the Merry Maids mission statement, “to simplify and improve the quality of our customers' lives.” We saw first-hand how Merry Maids cleaning service was increasing the quality of life of many people by the service they were providing. Over the years, we were very impressed with the business integrity and service quality of Merry Maids, so when we had an opportunity to purchase the Merry Maids in New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender counties, we did not hesitate.
SM: What sets Merry Maids apart from other cleaning services? DP: Merry Maids is a professional home cleaning service that distinguishes itself from other cleaning services in several ways. Our staff of professional cleaners have passed a rigorous job interviewing process that includes a background check, drug screening, and reference checks. Additionally, we protect our customers by carrying liability insurance, and file social security and state and federal taxes so our customers don’t have to. We have a unique cleaning system that has been used successfully since 1979 throughout the United States, so our customers are assured a detailed and thorough clean every time. Most importantly, I feel we set ourselves apart from our competition in our commitment to customer service. We believe that if people are going to pay good money for a

cleaning service, then they should be more than satisfied with the results. That is why we offer a 24-hour guarantee on our work. We are not perfect, but we are committed to making the cleaning experience a great experience for our customers. I believe that is why our customer retention is so high: We keep our customers happy. SM: If someone's never had their home professionally cleaned, how do you suggest they prepare for their first cleaning? DP: Preparing for that first time in cleaning should not be stressful or overwhelming. We are coming in to help you, so please don’t clean up for us the night before! You do not have to have your house completely organized before the cleaning crew comes in. There are, however, some things that you can do to get the most out of that first detail clean. We recommend you clear away any places in the home that have a lot of nic-nacs or paperwork, etc., so those surface areas can be thoroughly cleaned. Also, pulling any heavy furniture like sofas or chairs away from the wall will allow the team to wipe down baseboards that would otherwise be blocked. Any special instructions, like fragile or heirloom pieces that do not need to be touched (or a family dog who loves Milk Bones!) are very helpful to the team when they come into your home. We bring our own equipment and patented Merry Maids products with us, so no need to buy any cleaning products or equipment before we clean. Just a little prep
SM: What are some of your customers' reactions to having more time and not having to worry about cleaning chores? DP: A professor said, “Changed my life—I feel like I have a new lease on life!” He has been working on a book for several years that needed to be finished. He started biweekly service with us and his clean work environment has allowed him to write freely again. Another customer had us come in for a deep clean for their daughter's wedding. She said, "It was amazing! I ended up signing up for a year’s cleaning. It was totally worth it—I wish I had thought of this years ago!” Other customer comments include, “Consistently good service. Not only clean, but you make everything shine!” and “Very professional, very well-trained people who always consider the special needs of the customer.” SM: What other services do you provide that homeowners may not be aware of? Can you do commercial locations as well? DP: Inside window cleaning, cleaning inside refrigerators and stoves, changing bed linens. We provide cleaning services to smaller commercial businesses. SM: Favorite food? DP: Mexican cuisine, sushi SM: Favorite book? DP: "Same Kind of Different as Me," cowritten by Ron Hall and Denver Moore SM: Favorite band? DP: Casting Crowns SM: Favorite place to travel? DP: Southern Caribbean SM: Favorite thing about Southport? DP: The quaint atmosphere and the friendly people

THE VISITING FISHERMAN
B
A 1940s cottage provides water views and recreation for a fisher and his wife
ILL RUSTIN AND HIS FAMILY HAVE been visiting Southport waters since 1958, directed to the area after fishing for tarpon in the Florida Keys. "We went to a tackle shop in Wilmington, and they said, 'Yeah, they're in the mouth of the Cape Fear and at Frying Pan Shoals,'" Bill, who grew up in Gastonia, NC, recalls. Vacationing on Long Beach and Holden Beach each year since, Bill remembers fishing long eight-hour days with friends back in the '60s. In 1963, he brought his new bride, Mary Louise, to Southport. "I'm from Vermont originally; I grew up in Burlington on Lake Champlain. So, I've always wanted or
needed water of some kind," Mary Louise tells. "Being in Gastonia, when we were first married, I was missing something and I didn't know what it was. When we started coming down to the beach, I realized it was the water. I had to have some water that I could see. I paint, and so this new water and sky, for me, has always been a very exciting inspiration. In Vermont, you look around the next turn in the road. You don't look at vistas of sea and sky." Though she didn't grow up around salt water, Mary Louise became hooked on the area. "I went out with them in Leo Dowling's boat back behind Bald Head Island," she shares. "That beautiful property, oh my

goodness—there were only the three guard houses." Through the years of their infatuation with coastal Carolina, the Rustins have lived in Tallahasee, FL, and Raleigh, NC. In 2005, Mary Louise suggested they look for a vacation home here to escape the bustle of Wake County. "We had a villa over in Oak Island Villages," Bill notes. "Verilyn McKee, our realtor with Southport Realty, knew that Mary Louise and I would love to get into downtown Southport for just a nostalgic situation, and so that Mary Louise could tie into the art world more." Verilyn urged the couple to take a look at 111 S. At-

lantic Avenue, despite the cottage's outward appearance that it may be small. When the Rustins thought it wouldn't work, Verilyn just knew they should take a tour. A decade later, the couple still spends two to three weekends in the butter-yellow abode. "[The changes in Southport], I think that's why we like this house and this area where we are, because it's been the same for a long time," Bill says of the downtown nook. "It was built as a cottage in the beginning, but it's much larger than one would expect a cottage to be, because of the additions." What's more, elements of the 2,200 square-foot home beckon the Rustins'
childhood memories. Constructed in 1940, it hosts many of the same features Bill and Mary Louise grew up with in Gastonia and Vermont. The cutout for the old telephone in the dining room wall is the same cutout that appeared in Bill's Gastonia house— which was built in the '30s—as well as Mary Louise's old home. Glass knobs on the doors harken back to Mary Louise's Burlington house, as well as the old ironing-board cabinet (now a spice rack in the kitchen!). Even the chairs at the breakfast table are the same she ate in as a child; as they bought the Southport home furnished, she was delighted to see all of the similarities. "I cherish these door knobs. I've seen them in antique stores," the artist muses. "The floors in the oldest part of the
house are original, and we just think it's great. The telephone insert, somebody else would say, 'Oh, just take that out.' But it adds character." Mary Louise is big on letting her home tell the family story. Along the high wainscot in the living room, she has placed paintings, photos and fishing citations atop the moulding. "I've not seen it done before, except for one magazine, but it was after we'd already had our photos up. It's a wonderful way to display items," she says. By the front door, an ode to the home itself is placed. "This address sign was here when we moved in," Bill says of the metal piece [top photo]. "One day we came in the back door, and this painting of the house was sitting inside the screen porch. Someone painted it, and a lady bought it then left it here, because she thought it was more interesting to us. We found out who that was, she lives

right around the corner. The painting is missing one element of the home's faรงade: the small blue wave cutout that appears above the door. That was bought at Lantana's Gallery and Fine Gifts (113 Howe St.), handmade by shop owner Hilary Meehan. The Rustins have enjoyed many years at 111 S. Atlantic Ave., from Mary Louise painting in the studio they added to relaxing on the screened-in back porch which, when it rains on the tin roof, offers the most soothing "ping, ping" sounds. The front flagstone patio they installed is great for sipping wine and chatting with neighbors, and the couple spends most of its time in the front sunroom.
Additions throughout the years added a hall bathroom (bottom) and a master suite (bedroom featured above) with a whirlpool tub, amongst other rooms.

Mary Louise loves to cook, and when Bill can't get on the water, they often visit Haag's or Clem's for fresh seafood for Bill to grill, while his wife whips up the sides. Below, Mary Louise's whimsical landscape paintings are on display in her studio, an addition the couple crafted.
"We absolutely love this room. If we're inside, this is often where we are, because we can sit and see everything that happens on the water, all the ships that go up and down the river," Mary Louise describes. "Bill watches the fishing boats so he knows who's on the water." Yet, as time passed, the duo decided to place their vacation home on the market in order to exchange the responsibility
for a rental. "It took us a long time to decide to sell, though we knew we would at some stage," Bill amends. The four-bedroom, three-bath home is listed with Southport Realty for $598,000. Resting behind its bucolic white picket fence and English garden, the not-so-little yellow house will be sure to charm its next owner, fisherman, painter, or not.
