ON THE COVER This month’s issue is about community and support. When I was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia last year, I quickly realized I needed all the support I could get. I found this group of ladies, all cancer survivors (because even when we’re going through treatment, we are surviving). They have surrounded me with love and laughter, and I will be forever grateful for their friendship. If you’re going through an illness or addiction, or caring for a loved

one, there is probably a support group out there just waiting to welcome you, so don’t be shy. For this cover shot, I asked survivors to wear their cancer awareness colors. We all joined hands or hugged, physically demonstrating the support we give. Stay strong, support each other and keep fighting — Lisa Stites Cover Photo by Jeff Stites, Oak Island PhotoWorks

Local Support Groups Community plays a big part in helping others heal or those in need STORY BY LISA STITES

M

any people support our communities in all kinds of ways. We fill shelves at the food pantry, buy backpacks and fill them with supplies before school starts, volunteer with literacy programs or at the domestic violence shelter, mentor and tutor students, and donate money and clothes to charities doing good work.

The list of how we help each other is long. Support can come in other forms too, especially when you or someone you love is facing a health crises, is navigating the path to recovery or is otherwise going through a difficult time. The support groups many of our friends and neighbors rely on are as close as neighborhood churches, restaurants or any place where people can gather and connect with others who understand. Oak Island resident and breast cancer survivor Sarah Whitmer started “The Girls” of Brunswick Cancer Support Group in 2014. She and a couple other Oak Island residents had been attending a group in Wilmington and Whitmer was asked to start a similar one in Brunswick County. “The Girls” group is all about supporting each other with laughter. “We’re celebrating the battles we’ve gone through and supporting other women who are just beginning their own journey,” Whitmer said. The group meets monthly in an area restaurant in Southport, Oak Island or Leland. There are 85 women officially included in the Facebook group, but between 20-25 usually attend a dinner.

It’s a relaxed atmosphere where women can share their stories if they want, ask questions, or just have girl talk. Whitmer said one of the members was reluctant to join, not being a group person and thinking that support groups were just a pity party, or nothing but dwelling on the negatives. Now, that member smiles and laughs with other survivors. “It’s an outlet,” Whitmer said. “It’s like a friendship group and the thing we have in common is that we’ve all had cancer.” For more information about this group, contact Whitmer at 910-471-6335. Another group that focuses on cancer survivors is a more recent addition to the area’s support system. R.I.S.E. Cancer Support Group (resilient, informed, strong, extraordinary) was started by St. James resident Susan Werlinich; the group meets in her home at 4509 Fieldstone Circle and is open to anyone in any stage of cancer diagnosis or treatment. The group meets the second and fourth Wednesday from 3-4:30 p.m. “I just feel like people who have cancer need a place where they can voice their concerns, and ask questions, sort of know

Sarah Whitmer, photo by Jeff Stites

that they are not alone.” Werlinich said. Werlinich was an oncology nurse specialist in Ohio before retiring not quite two years ago. She said she loves working with groups, and knew she wanted to continue that work in her new hometown. R.I.S.E. is also a no-pressure group. Werlinich says she encourages people to attend two or three times before deciding if the group is for them. She said people don’t even need to tell her whether they are attending. She doesn’t have an agenda to follow, and the meeting is led by the members themselves as they decide what to discuss. “Groups aren’t for everyone,” Werlinich said,”but it’s nice to have available.” Lower Case Fear Hospice (LCFH) is known for the physical care provided to patients, but the organization also offers grief counseling and hosts support groups to those dealing with loss. Support groups meets in New Hanover, Brunswick and Columbus Counties, but anyone may participate in any of the groups. There is no cost to join, but registration is required. “Our mission is not just to provide the highest level of care and comfort to patients, but also to provide support and counseling to families and education to the community,” Lower Cape Fear Hospice spokesperson Amanda Hutcheson said. “We know that grief can seem overwhelming and challenging, and we know the importance of encouragement and compassion as people are grieving. These programs and workshops are available to anyone in the community who is coping with grief after the loss of an important person, regardless of whether that person

received hospice care.” LCFH offers summer camps for children and hosts family days, where families can spend time playing together and learning how grief affects families, Hutcheson explained. The organization also offers specialized programs, such as dealing with grief at the holidays. “If someone is struggling with grief, they can reach out to us at 910-796-7991 to learn about grief groups that might be a good fit and other services that may be of benefit to them,” Hutcheson said. Many of our area churches host support groups, such as Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous, grief support groups, and others. There are too many groups to list, so here are just a few of the many groups meeting in our communities: Caregivers Support Group meets at the The Brunswick Center (Senior Center) at Leland, 121 Town Hall Drive, on the second Thursday of the month from 10-11:30 a.m. Contact Holly Pilson 910-395-4553 ext. 204 for more information. Stroke Support Group meets at The Brunswick Center (Senior Center) at Southport, 1513 N. Howe Street on the third Monday at 1 p.m. A Caregivers Support Group also meets at the Center on the fourth Wednesday at 10 a.m. Lower Cape Fear Hospice groups (check https://www.lcfh.org/grief-groups-workshops/ for more information): Coping with the Death of a Child – A six-week grief program for those who have lost a child, Wednesdays, Aug. 6 through Sept. 10, 1-3 p.m. at the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick. Coping with the Death of a Spouse or Partner - A six-week grief program for those who have lost a spouse or partner, Thursdays, Aug. 8 through Sept. 12, 1-3 p.m. at the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick. Coping with the Death of a Loved One – A six-week grief program for those who have lost a loved one, Wednesdays, Aug. 21 through Sept. 25, 2-4 p.m. at the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick. Coping with the Death of a Spouse or Partner – a six-week grief program for those who have lost a spouse or partner, Wednesdays, Aug. 28 through Sept. 12, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Leland Library. Coping with the Death of a Child – a sixweek grief program for those who have lost a child, Wednesdays, Oct. 16 through Nov. 20, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Leland Library.

ome people in the community step up and do a little bit extra. Barbara Sammons is one of those people. She and her sister created this cute little free library for anyone to enjoy. You can come and sit and read, take a book or leave a book.

Barbara tells her story and how Irene came to be: “Several years ago I built my first Little Free Library which I named "Delilah" as that was my mom's favorite song. Over the years, the elements had taken its toll on Delilah so I put my sister, Francine, to the task to build a new library. This new library is a re-purposed sewing machine cabinet which we now call "Irene" in memory of our mom who was an expert seamstress. My sister painted the library, inside and out, all with a coastal theme. With the help of our neighbor, this new library was constructed, painted and installed today

(July 22). "Irene" sits proudly where Delilah once sat and is now filled with books to the delight of our neighborhood. The library sits across the street from our home which is located at 4314 Frying Pan Road SE, Southport (off of Long Beach Road behind the Beach Road Baptist Church). The books are free to anyone who wants to take one and read one. We keep it stocked with various books, both for adults and children.” For more information on the Little Free Library program, you can read more about it here: https://littlefreelibrary.org/

Many new wines: Italian Rosé and Cabernets. Also many more by-the-glass choices.

Pink Retreat

Oak Island Hosts Little Pink Houses of Hope Retreat STORY BY BETH A. KLAHRES

E

leven families impacted by breast cancer will descend on Oak Island for a week of relaxation, rejuvenation and an escape from reality in September. Little Pink Houses of Hope, a national 501(c)3 non-profit headquartered in Burlington, NC, has sponsored retreats since 2011 at various locations across the country, including Emerald Isle, NC, Key West, FL, Gulf Shores, AL and our own charming Oak Island, NC.

All housing, activities, services and meals are provided free of charge by local businesses and churches so that families can focus on spending quality time together. Little Pink promotes breast cancer recovery through opportunities for survivors and their families to celebrate life through the belief that a cancer diagnosis affects the entire family. The organization was founded by Jeanine Patten-Coble, a tenyear breast cancer survivor who started the organization after noticing the gap in services for families of survivors. Little Pink has made an amazing impact across the United States. Patten-Coble was named a 2017 CNN Hero, honored by SELF magazine as the 2014 Women Doing Good Award Winner and by Former President George H.W. Bush as a Point of Light Award Winner. Over the past nine years, Oak Island has welcomed more than 60 families as part of

Little Pink Houses of Hope. Throughout the week of September 1521, families will enjoy a variety of activities including kayaking, stand-up-paddle boarding and the ferry to the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher. The survivors will test their artistic side at canvas painting and be treated to an afternoon of pampering at a spa followed by “date night” with their spouse at Founders Club in St. James Plantation. The children will attend a pizza party and a beach conservation activity, Leave Only Footprints, sponsored by the North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport. Caregivers will also enjoy a private boat cruise on the Intracoastal Waterway. For many families, the retreat is the first time seeing the ocean or experiencing the thrill of paddle boarding. The retreat would not be possible without the incredible support of the community. A local group of volunteers called

11 families. 800 meals. 850 bottles of water. 60 beach towels. Tons of fun. Countless smiles. Team Pink is the feet on the ground making preparations for the families’ arrival. Planning starts almost one year in advance. Team Pink manages everything from fund raising and donation solicitation to daily activities and meal scheduling.

Brenda Downing, a retiree from Safelite AutoGlass, is a Team Pink volunteer who solicits lunch for each family from various Oak Island restaurants for the final day of the retreat. This year she is also proud to present a donation from her company to Little Pink. Downing says, “Seeing the smiles on the families’ faces having a great time miles away from their treatments is a rewarding experience. And encountering the generosity of local businesses, friends and now my former company, is very gratifying.” Each family is also provided with a trained volunteer known as a VolunSTAR who caters to the family’s personal needs

throughout the week on a one-on-one basis. VolunSTARS attend daily retreat staff meetings to ensure a memorable experience for their assigned family. While Team Pink is comprised of all local residents, VolunSTARS come from across the U.S. Oak Island Accommodations has been a supporter of Little Pink Houses of Hope for many years, coordinating housing donations and providing linens and cleaning services. “Our entire staff is completely on board with the mission of Little Pink Houses of Hope and we have Oak Island property owners with really big hearts,” says Joel DeMonbreun, General Manager at Oak Island Accommodations. Kristin Goode, Chief Content Marketer at Oak Island Accommodations adds, “It is truly a privilege for us to support Little Pink year after year.” Rebecca Squires, Director of Oak Island Parks and Recreation Department comments, “Inspiring and engaging the Little Pink Houses of Hope families allows Oak Island Parks and Recreation to assist in the empowerment of women who have previously encountered limitations due to extenuating circumstances. Offering services to Little Pink is a true joy for us and it is an opportunity to create a steadfast foundation towards a caring and uplifting Oak Island community.” Little Pink is honored to return to Oak Island this year. And the families are grateful for the opportunity. For an entire week, there are no thoughts of doctor appointments, surgeries or treatments. As one past attendee said, “The retreat was just what I needed to help me regroup and destress. Most of all, the wonderful families I connected with helped me understand I was not alone.” In 2017 when the Medlin family was

asked when they were heading home, 10 year-old Spenser shouted, “Never!” The families return home with many memories as well as mementos from their week including family portraits on the beach taken by a professional photographer. Jeff and DeDra Robb from Nebraska summed up their week saying, “The retreat gave us the chance to relax, sit on the porch and look at the ocean in one of the most beautiful and generous communities we have ever visited. It was great to see our kids experience things they would never had the opportunity to try in Nebraska. Because of Little Pink, we have other metastatic breast cancer survivors to connect with in the future. It was a privilege to be here.” Starting September 15, the Little Pink Houses of Hope flag will be flying high at First Baptist Church, Oak Island Community Center and many other local venues. The flag will be relocated on a daily basis to help families locate activities as well as to recognize local supporters. There are many ways to get involved with Little Pink Houses of Hope including monetary and gift card donations, donation of a property or volunteering. Buy a Brick

Community fundraiser to bring documents to Brunswick County STORY BY AMI BROWN

F

oundation Forward, Inc. is an educational non-profit educational project, 501(c)(3) organization that builds “Your Charters of Freedom Settings” in local communities across the country. Brunswick County Commissioner Patricia Sykes is championing this huge project and hopes to raise the money through selling customized bricks.

The Charters of Freedom are our nation’s founding documents: The Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. You can join the Brunswick County Commissioners and the citizens of Brunswick County, with the support of Founding Forward, in the installation of these extraordinary documents at the front of the Brunswick County Courthouse. This will help bring history alive for thousands of school children who may not be able to visit Washington, DC, allowing them to learn about and experience our nation’s history. Brunswick County Charters of Freedom has raised $36,000, but needs to raise $60,000 to complete the Charters of Freedom Settings.

All community funding will be from private donors like you, along with civic, historic, and veteran’s organizations. No tax dollars will be used. To help raise the funds donors can purchase a brick/paver in their name or as memorial. Brick/paver’s can have a military or first responder logo. Bricks are $100 each. You can find more information at our website at http://www.brunswickchartersoffreedom.com or simply send your donation to Brunswick Charters of Freedom at 1002 Fairley Street, Southport, NC 28461. A bank account has been established for this project. Make checks payable to BC Charters of Freedom. All donations are 100% tax deductible. School Supply Drive Community in Schools needs donations STORY BY TODD BEANE

Communities In Schools of Brunswick County and CIS Thrift Shops are hosting the annual “CIS Back to School Supply Drive” during August. Supplies will be collected at all CIS Thrift Shop locations in Brunswick County and the CIS main office in Boiling Spring Lakes beginning August 1. Four CIS Thrift Shops are located in Boiling Spring Lakes, Leland, Southport, and Sunset Beach. The thrift shops sell new and used donated items to raise money for CIS programs which help students succeed in school and life. The CIS mission of surrounding students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life, ties in perfectly with our school supply drive for students. A 1-800-Packrat trailer will be located at the CIS Administrative office in BSL to collect

and store donated items throughout the drive. The “Back to School Supply Drive” is a joint effort between Communities In Schools and Brunswick County Schools including partner organizations 1-800-Packrat and the St. James Service Club. The goal is a comprehensive approach to collecting and donating school supplies for distribution to Brunswick County students, giving local businesses, churches, and community members a chance to give back.

How to donate The supply list items that are needed include: back packs, composition notebooks (wide ruled), spiral notebooks (college ruled), loose leaf paper (college ruled), #2 pencils and erasers, colored pencils, dry erase markers, glue sticks, blue or black ink pens, 2 inch and 3 inch – 3 ring binders, dividers for 2 and 3 inch binders, headphones or earbuds, and pencil pouches for binders. Any item from the supply list can be donated. Businesses and individuals can also donate money that will be used specifically to purchase needed school supplies. “CIS Back to School Supply Drive” donations can be dropped off at any CIS Thrift Shop location or the CIS main office located at 3148 George II Highway, Unit 2 in Boiling Spring

Lakes (beside of Joe Loves Lobster Rolls). CIS will have school supply donation boxes located at thrift shop collection points and a 1-800-Packrat storage trailer located at the CIS Administration office for storing donated items until school starts. We want to get supplies to students as quickly as possible after school starts, so donations are needed as soon as possible. Financial gifts may also be made during the school supply drive and should be mailed to CIS of Brunswick County, P.O. Box 10087, Southport, NC 28461, or dropped off at the CIS office in Boiling Spring Lakes. FITNESS Sticking to Your Weight Loss Plan

Are you one of the many pursuing the elusive goal of permanent weight loss? STORY BY BRIAN TULLY, MS, EP-C

A

countless number of individuals are currently on the quest to lose weight; some need or desire to lose more than others, either for aesthetic reasons or health reasons, or both. You may be one of them. Most will fall off the path and struggle to stick to it. One of my favorite tips is to focus on the process not the outcome. Below are 7 tried and true techniques to help you stick with the process and help you achieve success. KEEP A FOOD JOURNAL Before you start down your path to lose weight, it is a good idea to understand where you are starting from with your current eating habits. To accomplish this, track 3-4 typical days of eating. Try to include 2 weekdays and 1-2 weekend days. You will then want to use a reliable online source to determine what your typical calorie and macronutrient intake looks like. This will be a helpful starting point if you are going to be working with a coach. You can also use your journal (or app)

to review your daily eating habits and start cleaning things up. Numerous studies have shown that the simple act of writing down everything you eat forces individuals to make better choices. BE REALISTIC Set a weight loss goal that seems realistically attainable. For instance, a goal of 20 lbs lost in a month is drastic and extreme for most. But 20 lbs in 6 months, works out to a little more than 3 lbs per month and less than 1 lb per week. Which do you think you will be more likely to achieve and sustain? HELPFUL HOME ENVIRONMENT Allow your home environment to help as much as possible. Create a path of least resistance. Set out your workout clothes and sneakers the night before. Clear out the junk foods and any other foods that are not part of your plan. Place the healthy foods in plain sight. Make it as inconvenient as possible to cheat. FEASIBLE EXERCISE PROGRAM While exercise is an important component of any weight loss program, don’t set your self up to fail. If you currently don’t do any physical exercise, you should not decide to kick off

16 Southport Magazine /AUGUST 2019 / www.SouthportMag.com

your weight loss program with a plan to work out for an hour every day. Start slow with the approach of taking on what you absolutely know you can do. Then build from there. Even if it is only a 10 minute walk every other day to start. You should have the focus of building toward the minimum recommendation given by the American College of Sports Medicine, which is 150-250 minutes per week of moderate-intensity activity. This breaks down to about three 10-minute bouts of activity per day. One other tip, try to pick activities you actually enjoy. GET SUPPORT Seek out others on the same journey. Surrounding yourself with friends, family, and co-workers on a similar mission will help keep you in check and on track. Your social circle is a strong predictor of your success. TRACK YOUR WEIGHT This one can be a double edged sword. Weighing yourself is obviously the best way to ensure you are actually making progress, but your weigh-in needs to be taken as part of the big picture. If you choose to weigh yourself daily, don’t look at that individual weigh-in as your weight. I recommend taking an average of all 7 weight mea-

sures for the week to give you your current progress marker. Then use this progress marker to determine what kind of adjustments, if any, need to be made to your plan. GET A COACH Having a coach can help you stay on the right track. Not only will they provide accountability, but they can help create a plan that is right for you; from both an exercise and nutrition perspective. They can then continue to work with you to make modifications as needed. And of course, celebrate all your successes along the way! Remember to focus on your adherence to the process and the outcome will take care of itself. And be patient, you are building a lifestyle that works specifically for you; one that allows you to achieve your weight loss goal and actually keep it off. As always, if you have additional questions regarding this month’s article or have a topic you would like to see covered in future articles; please don’t hesitate to reach out to me via email. CHEERS Unearthing an Ancient Tavern

Brunswick Town dig discovers long lost treasure STORY BY JEFFREY STITES

I

met an old friend at a local tavern after work on a recent Friday afternoon. That wouldn’t normally be worthy of even this column, but this tavern was special, despite -no because- it was lacking the basics. No one knows its name, it doesn’t have any drinks or food…….or walls or a roof for that matter. In fact it’s just a spot in the grass marked by four PVC pipes sticking out of the ground and a square of string.

My friend is local historian Jim McKee, Site Director of the Brunswick Town-Fort Anderson State Historic Site off Rt 133 and the tavern was just unearthed there this summer by the students of East Carolina University’s Archaeology Field School. Standing in what was once, more than 250 years ago, the tavern’s doorway, McKee showed me what the building would have looked like. It was a 15 foot by 25 foot rectangle with a brick foundation. The door would

have been in the center of a short side facing the street and opposite the doorway would have been a fireplace. It’s not difficult to imagine the scene, really. The river is easily visible just a couple hundred yards away and at the time would have featured docks

and wharves, as Brunswick Town was a major port. Walking up the street from the wharf, a sailor would have found this tavern waiting. “They certainly would have had a bar,” Mckee said. “There would have been tables and chairs. It would’ve been full of people.” If the tavern offered sleeping space to travelers, it would have been upstairs, probably in an open room. “You wouldn’t have rented a bed, you’d have rented sleeping space, maybe sharing with two or three strangers. It would have been cozy in the winter.” This site was first thought to be a house, but the artifacts told a different story. “We found a lot of tankards and pipe stems,” said McKee. They did not find other household goods, so it wasn’t like any of the dwellings in town. McKee said if the tavern served food, it would have been served on pewter plates that would not have survived the fire that destroyed it, so the lack of plates isn’t telling. The dig site has been re-buried to protect the bricks, but the excavation will resume next summer. They hope to uncover all the walls and see if there may have been a second doorway, which would suggest an outside kitchen. “I would have had an outside

CHEERS kitchen,” McKee said. He showed me where he believes the tavern’s well was located and said that ground-penetrating radar has suggested a lot of activity behind the tavern, perhaps including a detached kitchen. Besides the tavern-related artifacts, other evidence both supports the tavern identification and helps place the building in time, also revealing why it doesn’t appear on any maps of Brunswick Town. The land the tavern sits on was part of a parcel including the home closer to the river. McKee said deeds show the parcel being purchased and resold a few years later for almost twice the price. “Something added value to the land,” he said. “This tavern would have done that.” Also, the deed for the Lord-Wright House on the other side of the tavern lists the occupation of the owner, Mr. Wright, as “tavern keeper”. “People have this misconception about archaeology,” said McKee. “They think that the digging reveals everything. But for every hour spent digging on a site, days are spent in archives or a lab.” The fire that destroyed the tavern is easier to date thanks to an Irish half-penny minted in 1766 found in the rubble. McKee said it likely took

Jim McKee, Site Director

a year or so for the coin to circulate across the Atlantic, so the tavern was almost certainly still standing as late as 1767. It doesn’t appear on a 1769 map of Brunswick Town, so the fire can be fairly reliably placed between 1767 and 1769. But let’s get back to what this place was like before the fire. What did one drink in a late 18th century tavern? Rum. Mostly, one drank rum. There was probably hard cider, maybe wine and beer, but according to surviving records of taverns in the late 1700s, almost 80 percent of drink sales were rum, and most of that straight up rather than mixed with anything. According to Wayne Curtis’ excellent book “And a Bottle of Rum: A History of the New World in Ten Cocktails” the average American over the age of 15 in the 1760s was consuming the equivalent of 5 shots of rum per day. That kind of makes it easier to understand why the colonists thought facing down the biggest superpower in the world with a volunteer army of farmers with hunting muskets was a fine idea. In fact, Brunswick Town itself was a hotbed of anti-government activity. The Stamp Act, passed by the British Parliament in 1765, set off protests all over the colonies including in Bruns-

wick Town, where the customs house was seized by angry colonials in 1766. We know the tavern existed then and it would have been a common meeting place for the people of Brunswick Town, perhaps even being used as a courthouse, according to McKee. A small jewel found at the site positively places revolutionary activity in this very tavern. It is etched with the words “Wilkes and Liberty 45,” a sort of secret code rallying cry among anti-crown colonists. Displaying these jewels would have allowed revolutionary-minded colonists to identify each other without advertising their leanings to everyone. People who brought these little jewels with them into Brunswick Town’s tavern were looking for like-minded folks, and judging from the armed take-over of the customs house, it’s not unreasonable to guess that this is where they found them. So right there, where Jim and I were standing happily chatting away on a sunny, quiet summer afternoon, the seeds of freedom were being sown two and a half centuries ago. A big, hearty CHEERS to that.

ART BEAT Community & Art

Artist, Barbara McFall is driving force behind successful Southport Art Hub STORY AND PHOTOS BY CARLA EDSTROM

W

e are creative beings. Everything we use in daily life was once a mere thought and created tangible by someone. Art is a demonstration of our lives and goes beyond social, economic and cultural barriers. Barbara McFall, the Director of the Brunswick Community College Southport Center on Lord Street, understands not only an artist’s drive but how important the arts are. Being a pottery instructor at the center, I have talked with Barbara many times about her future goals and dreams for the center that she helped build from the ground up. The spark in her eyes and love in her words are evidence that she is right where she belongs. Being a lifelong artist herself, Barbara’s creativity, passion, and support for the arts is the driving force that is behind the BCC Southport campus. They have taken a ram shackled old building and created a haven for artists, craftspeople and musicians where they can enjoy the freedom to create.

Being an NC native, Barbara has a unique perspective on our little town, spending a lot of time as a child around the area. “I grew up in Charlotte, but in many ways, you could say that the Carolina Coast and I grew up together,” said Barbara. “My earliest memories of the Coast are of the Summer of 1954. My sister Peggy and I are playing with our cousins in the great room of the Swinson’s cottage in Myrtle Beach. I can still feel the polished pine floors underfoot as we skipped together from one end of the room to the other under the watchful eye of a giant marlin. We colored beach scenes before bed and posted them on the refrigerator for viewing,” she said. Her fond memories of the area as a child were hampered by the hurricane that changed everything about the area. “We returned to the Swinson property in October that year. This time however it was to inspect the damage done by Hurricane Hazel. It

was total destruction,” explained Barbara. “There was nothing left standing for miles. The summer home that had shaped my mother’s teenage memories would not be rebuilt. Hazel had cleared the way for Myrtle Beach to become the high-rise tourist destination that it is today,” she said. “In 1954, this County was an agricultural community. Southport, the County Seat, was a small fishing village with oyster shell roads. The Brunswick County beaches were just beginning to consider development. All were in for a major setback. At high tide, Hazel put the beaches on the bottom of the ocean obliterating 352 of the 357 buildings on Oak Island. The waterfront fishing industry in Southport was destroyed, never to return. Having lost its primary livelihood, the local economy languished for nearly twenty years,” she said. “My family returned to the beach year after year during that time, mostly camping at the old Lake Arrowhead Campground.”

ART BEAT As a young woman, Barbara cut her teeth working as an artist. “The year I graduated high school, I spent the summer in Ocean Drive (now North Myrtle) drawing tourist portraits at the Pavilion to earn money for college,” she said. “It was a happy interlude of Beach Music and shag dancing before beginning freshman year as an art major at East Carolina in the Fall of 1966. Over the next twenty years, I married twice, raised two children (a girl and a boy), and made homes in Fort Bragg, Charlotte, Houston, and Phoenix. I worked as a portrait artist and interior decorator as well as in small business financing and the building industry,” said Barbara. “As I moved around, Mom, Dad, and my two sisters remained anchored in Charlotte. We all gathered at my younger sister Carol’s beach house on Oak Island for most family holidays,” she said. “In the early ’70s, left with rows of emp-

ty storefronts downtown, Southport merchants decided to gather whatever merchandise they could make or find locally and stock the shelves with antiques, collectibles, art, and crafts. Twelve local artists formed a collaborative, The Associated Artists of Southport, and opened the Franklin Square Gallery in the old school building. Going forward, Southport would develop as a beloved destination for those prizing local galleries, antique shops, and specialty boutiques, fine food, and music.” Growing with the coast and seeing the changes first hand, Barbara has a unique perspective on its history, what is happening now and what our future holds. “The ’80s and ’90s saw another major shift in the life and work of Brunswick County,” said Barbara. “With the development of several major retirement communities, the County became one of the fastest-growing areas

in the State and the Nation. And the demographics changed significantly. What had been a close-knit community of working families with roots in the sea and soil here for many generations was becoming older (50+), wealthier, more highly educated and no longer employed. In many cases, the newcomers were couples from the urban northeast with no family or friends in this area.” In 1984, Barbara and her family took off to tour Europe for a year, living in Germany and Greece, and then settled in Roanoke, Virginia. “There we bought an arts/crafts gallery, surrounded ourselves with very talented artists, learned professional picture framing, and hand-built a rustic cabin by a waterfall nestled in a bend of the Blue Ridge Parkway,” she said. “As the children went off to college, I returned also, completing a Masters at Virginia Tech and a Ph.D. at Saybrook,” Said

Barbara. “I joined the tenure track at West Virginia University and soon became Director of the Division of Design and Merchandising with programs in Interior Design, Fashion Design, Product Design, and Design Studies. These were accredited majors serving undergraduate (BS) and graduate students (MS, Ph.D.). We also led annual study abroad programs in Milan (Fashion and Product) and Prague (Interiors and Design Studies). The Division grew into a School by 2013. It merged with Landscape Architecture and Resource Management under a new name the WVU School of Design and Community Development,” she said. In true serendipity, Barbara moved back to Southport at the perfect time. “With my husband’s health declining, I retired to return home to North Carolina,” she said. “At this point, these B divergent histories come together as p p m b h e b i I t p j F t c

BCC Southport Location

BCC Southport Center,” Barbara explained. “Because the city of Southport was developing as an arts hub, my daughter, her husband and I had bought a summer/retirement home here in 2012. It was the ultimate fixer-upper. It was, however, only two blocks behind the BCC Lord St. facility which was also under construction. I found employment as Director of the coming Center and moved here permanently Spring 2014. I was also juried in as an exhibiting member of Franklin Square Gallery and elected to the Board of the Brunswick Arts Council.” Barbara’s dream of Southport Center being a local art center is close to reality with more art and music classes in the works, and many more students. “BCC had a firm commitment to a pottery studio and a painting studio at the new Southport Center. All other classrooms were general purpose. So, with a burgeoning retirement popula-

tion and strong support for the arts in the area, the BCC Southport Center rapidly took form as a place for adult education in the arts, crafts and cultural heritage. What began in 2015 with a handful of classes has grown to 67 offerings for Fall 2019. Over 850 registrations were processed in 2018-2019. We currently employ 25 instructors and 3 staff. Committed students, faculty, staff, administration, and friends all play important roles in the growth and development of a facility such as this. All seems to be aligned to carry this project forward. * Fall classes are starting in August, so make sure to register today for some of these amazing arts and craft opportunities offered at the Southport and Leland locations. Some of the classes include: Pottery, Songwriting, Fabric Arts, Metalsmithing, Glass Works, Bead Works, Piano, Creative Writing and much more.

HISTORY American Samplers Finding the lost art of needlework STORY BY KASS FINCHER

F

or young schoolgirls in the 18th and 19th centuries, a genteel education included the artistry of needlework. American “samplers,” as they were called, were educational tools to develop the young girls’ stitchery skills, for both practical and decorative purposes in running the household. The students’ first efforts were usually just to learn to sew letters, numbers and simple designs. As they progressed, they learned to sew verses, flowers, poems and tracts concerning life and death. Their teachers conflated these more elaborate design skills with the hope that those verses would “foster virtue” in the young girls’ lives.

Though it was acknowledged that what the girl learned was directly related to the skills of her teacher, it was also clear that no matter the girl’s socioeconomic status, the sampler was a common tool for education. In their exhibit called “The ABCs of Schoolgirl Samplers,” the Milwaukee Public Museum describes this environment. “Whether made in elite academies, boarding schools, formal or informal day schools, orphanages, charity schools, or in an apprenticed or indentured work situation, the overwhelming majority of learning situations for girls, up until the mid-nineteenth century, utilized the sampler as a teaching tool. While some sampler’s style can be traced to a specific school, teacher, region, country, or particular learning environment, many samplers are anonymous. What we can know of each one that has

survived is that these beloved textiles today were valued when they were made and were often framed and displayed on walls, many kept within families as cherished heirlooms. “For well-educated girls of high social class, samplers confirmed their genteel standing; for the middling sort, samplers established their family’s place in an emerging American middle class. Samplers also benefited the poor or orphaned girl by teaching her a trade in practical, marketable sewing skills for future self-employment. Sampler making was also seen as laying the groundwork for religious piety, family responsibility, and civic virtue. Through its completion the young girl established, in a most public way, her educational accomplishments and the importance her family and community placed on that education.” By the middle of the 19th century, however, the rise of public education among all classes of people saw the art of sampler-making move from the classroom to a pastime at home. Better inks to mark textiles became available. In addition, the use of papers, pencils, slates and blackboards to practice lettering grew, and so the necessity for stitchery education declined. But the insights these samplers continue to give us into the education of young girls in early America is valuable. With 137 samplers in its collection, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History describes it this way: “In recent years, samplers have become important in museum collections as representations of early American female education. Many are signed, and some are inscribed with

locations and the names of teachers and schools. The emergence of large numbers of these samplers has resulted in much research in diaries, account books, letters, newspaper ads, local histories, and published commentary that is helping to illuminate the lives of women in early America.” Though not required of young girls today, the sewing arts still remain a popular pastime for many. Donna Bennett, the owner of Angelwing Needle Arts here in Southport, says cross stitch, knitting and quilting are the most popular sewing arts at her shop. Opening in 1999, Angelwing has lovely yarns for knitting and crochet, a unique selection of quilting fabrics, and a large selection of threads, charts and fabrics for cross stitch. The shop also offers

Southport Magazine 2016-2017 SOI Chamber Small Business of the Year Winner

a free knit and crochet help group and a stitching help group. Having sewn since she was young, Bennett enjoys knitting, weaving and sewing clothes and items for her home. When asked if the sewing arts still benefit young people's development, Bennett readily agreed. “I think it is beneficial for all children to learn crafts of any kind,” she says. “The process of making things can be very calming and educational. Children get a real sense of pride and accomplishment when they have made something themselves. Plus, it's fun, relaxing and studies show it is really good for your brain!” That makes sense. The American sampler-making tradition was educational as well as creative; it's an art that still can be enjoyed by the young or old.

Bambini’s Makes Memories

Local Italian fare hits the spot in Southport STORY BY KASS FINCHER

Ohas quite the following. Serving pizza, subs and Italian en-

pen just under a year, Bambini’s Italian Restaurant already

trees, the restaurant is definitely a family affair. Owners Kenny and Fonda Williams, along with son Garren, daughter Brayln and son Ansen, literally pour their hearts into the business, with their oft-stated goal of “making memories around the table.”

Kenny learned the business from the ground up, starting at Mario’s Pizza in Charlotte when he was a teenager. Owners John and Martha Fisichello taught him everything he needed to know to run a restaurant. Their Sicilian chef taught him how to make authentic Sicilian recipes.

Though his mentor John wanted him to partner in his restaurants, Kenny chose a different path. He and Fonda moved to Raleigh, where Kenny enrolled in the Wake Forest Baptist Seminary. After graduating, he worked as a youth pastor and associate pastor at various churches in the region.

Owners, Kenny & Fonda Williams

While working as a minister, Kenny also found himself back in the restaurant business part-time, acting as the maintenance supervisor for a McDonalds franchisee. It was when he broke his back and had three surgeries, that he had to retire at an early age. Fonda’s parents had a vacation home at Oak Island, so the couple moved here three years ago for Kenny to recuperate. Always finding their way back to ministry and food, they began cooking at churches in the area. They decided to open Bambini’s and put their experience to work. They viewed the business as a ministry in itself. Not only would they serve great and unique food, they would also approach their employees and customers with the

faith they shared. “Our purpose wasn’t to open a restaurant to make a lot of money; our purpose was to minister to our employees and customers,” says Kenny. “As long as the bills get paid, we’re happy.” With a dozen employees, the Williamses take the time to get to know what their needs are, and work hard to help them make their lives better. “We try to serve the way we want to be served; we try to love the way we want to be loved,” says Fonda. “We don’t always get it right, but we try.” The Italian word “bambinis” means children, and naming the restaurant this was intentional. Kenny explains. “Our kids are a vital part of the business,” he relates. “It was a retirement project for us but a heritage for them. All the recipes are mine but I’m teaching my son Garren, who is our sous chef. Our daughter Brayln always had a passion for baking; she makes the pastries. It’s hard work, but they grew up listening to us about the restaurant business. They helped with cooking for church – it’s just our life.” Kenny describes what distinguishes Bambini’s from other restaurants. “Because we’re authentic New York style pizza, I actually import most of my ingredients, even water, from New York,” he says. “We make homemade dough and sauces fresh every day. That’s another thing that sets us apart – the freshest, top quality ingredients. Our cheese is the most expensive, highest grade you can buy. Our goal is to give you the best quality at the most economical price.”

SAVOR Having gone through some tough times themselves, Kenny and Fonda place much emphasis on value. “We know how expensive it can be for a family of five to eat out,” says Fonda. “We want to be the place where a family like ours can go to eat when the budget is tight.” Though they say all of their pizzas are popular, they point to the Margherita and the Ellis Island/The Everything pizzas as favorites. People rave about the eggplant parmesan – it’s fresh eggplant, hand-breaded and a homemade marinara sauce that Kenny says is a secret recipe. The baked ziti ragu di’carne is a specialty. Kenny takes a fresh chuck roast and slow roasts it in “secret ingredients,” then hand pulls it. The meat is then simmered in the marinara sauce on the stove top, cooked to order. One favorite recipe they brought from their mentors in Charlotte is the broccoli ornamenti – linguini pan-fried with broccoli, garlic and olive oil. They also offer seafood specials “with a nice chef’s touch” on the weekends.

FALL in Love and be Amazed with our New Autumn Arrivals!

Daughter Brayln makes all the desserts. Fonda describes their popularity. “I’ve had people call and make sure we have the Brooklyn Blackout Cake on hand,” she says. “I’ve even had people order their dessert before their meal to make sure they get a slice.” Kenny describes the cake’s history. “During World War II, there were forced blackouts in Brooklyn so the U-boats off the coast couldn’t attack the Navy yard,” he says. “A smart baker there developed this cake; it’s a very rich dark chocolate that has a chocolate pudding in the middle. It became an overnight sensation; people would go there during the blackout and eat the cake by candlelight. So we brought that here to Southport.” The couple still cooks for a local church and the restaurant also does benefits to support charities, notably ALS research and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Giving back is part of their mission. But the community has given as well, in support of the family. When they lost their home on Oak Island due to the hurricane and had to live in hotels, many friends and restaurant pa-

trons came forward to help them out. “We had only been open a month when that happened,” says Fonda. “People came out and embraced us and we really appreciate it. I just want to say thank you!” Visit Bambini’s and support this unique family business while you enjoy a wonderful Italian meal.

SHOWCASE

Kindergarten Taught Us Everything Brunswick Little Theatre schools us all STORY BY AMI BROWN

B

runswick Little Theatre Presents “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten.” The show runs August 8-11 and 1518. Tickets will sell out quickly, so make sure to get yours today. Enjoy a special themed art exhibition at the theatre as well, courtesy of local Southport artists. “It doesn’t matter what you say you believe - it only matters what you do.” - Robert Fulghum

Robert Fulghrum’s “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten,” engages with musings on life, death, love, pain, joy, sorrow, and all the simple things that make life worth living. Based on Fulghum’s best-selling books, “Kindergarten” takes a funny, insightful, heartwarming look at what is profound in everyday life. It’s an evening of theatrical storytelling in revue format, with monologues, dialogues, and multiple voice narration, enhanced through music, which provides fluidity, charm, and emotional texture. These stories celebrate our very existence, from the whimsy of childhood to the wisdom of old age. “Kindergarten” is a sure hit for almost any performing group. Ernest Zulia adapted the book for the stage version. David Caldwell is the composer and lyricist. During the run of the show, paintings, prints and art will be on display in the lobby and the theatre. In conjunction with the Associated Artists of Southport, a selected number of artworks will be exhibited and for sale with a portion of the proceeds going to support the theatre. Some of the artwork will portray the theme of the show, whimsical, cheery and bright. “I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge. That myth is more potent than history. That dreams are more powerful than facts. That hope always triumphs over experience. That laughter is the only cure for grief. And I believe that love is stronger than death.” - Robert Fulghrum According to Fulghrum, “these are the things I learned (in Kindergarten):

1. Share everything. 2. Play fair. 3. Don’t hit people. 4. Put things back where you found them. 5. CLEAN UP YOUR OWN MESS. 6. Don’t take things that aren’t yours. 7. Say you’re SORRY when you HURT somebody. 8. Wash your hands before you eat. 9. Flush. 10. Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you. 11. Live a balanced life - learn some and drink some and draw some and paint some and sing and dance and play and work everyday some. 12. Take a nap every afternoon. 13. When you go out into the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands, and stick together. 14. Be aware of wonder. Remember the little seed in the Styrofoam cup: The roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that. 15. Goldfish and hamster and white mice and even the little seed in the Styrofoam cup - they all die. So do we. 16. And then remember the Dick-andJane books and the first word you learned the biggest word of all - LOOK.” Brunswick Little Theatre’s “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten” runs Thursdays – Saturdays August 8-10 and 15-17 at 7:30 pm and Sundays, August 11 and 18 at 3:00 pm. Brunswick Little Theatre is located at 8086 River Road, Southport, NC 28461. Tickets are $20 for adults and $12 for students with valid ID. Tickets can be purchased at Ricky Evans Gallery at 211 N. Howe Street in Southport, NC and online at www.brunswicklittletheatre.com.
