Shopping Local Shopping local has never been more important this year. With the Oak Island Bridge closure and many shops having to deal with hurricane damages, unexpected closures and repair costs... some of our “Mom & Pop” shops were hit hard and need extra support this Holiday Season.

Locally owned small businesses make this coastal community quaint and homey. Without them, this area would just be another commercial tourist locale. Our Southern Charm and traditional family businesses make this area unique and truly one of a kind. Let’s keep our towns feeling like community and support family-owned, locally-owned small businesses. Help keep them alive by shopping and buying local as much as we can this season. It’s been a tough year for a lot of folks... so if you can... shop local! Remembering
Ed Harper June 2, 1947 – November 14, 2018
We join our friends at the State Port Pilot in mourning the passing of Ed Harper, editor and publisher of that newspaper for 46 years. At the Pilot, Ed was a leader among community newspaper publishers in our state. An alumnus of UNC-Chapel Hill, Ed was always ready to talk college basketball with his Carolina-leaning Southport friends. And for those of us who walk our dogs every day downtown, or visit American Fish on Friday evenings, we would often run into Ed and Woody, his large but gentle Golden Retriever. We would take a few minutes to say hello and shoot the breeze, salubriously of course. Our warmest condolences go out to Morgan and her family. We will all miss you Ed. 4 Southport Magazine / DECEMBER 2018 / www.SouthportMag.com

CURRENTS Holidays are Here! Plenty of fun planned for December STORY BY LISA STITES
I
t’s so easy to have a packed schedule during the holidays, but pencil in some of these fun and heartwarming events to make your season shine even brighter.
WINTERFEST
The City of Southport is hosting its annual WinterFest December 1-9, and it’s a week full of activities aimed at setting the mood for the season. There’s a fire truck parade, a night of Christmas music at the Amuzu, an afternoon tea, cookie contest, supper with Santa’s Elves, the annual tour of homes, the flotilla and other activities. And at this
time of year, Southport, already a beautiful coastal community, really shines. “Southport is beautiful year round, but goes all out during the holidays with soft lights decorating the holly trees lining the main street and sailboat wreaths hanging from the street lights,” Assistant Tourism Director Sharon Venis said. “Downtown businesses decorate their storefronts, adding to the southern charm of a Southport holiday.”

CURRENTS WinterFest also includes a Santa’s Workshop, where children can make crafts to give their friends and family, and their parents can pick up just the right gift for that special someone at one of Southport’s shops. “After visiting the many shops that make Southport special, be sure to stop and spend some time at one of our many local restaurants,” Venis said. For anyone who might be spending their first Christmas season in Southport, Venis recommends getting out to see all the City has to offer. “The best way to get to know your town is to come out and participate in the many events offered. Support your local businesses and meet your neighbors,” she said.
FLOTILLA
Southport Magazine is sponsoring the annual flotilla again this year. Come out to the waterfront park and watch a variety of boats parade by with lights and Christmas themes. This brilliant spectacle is a highlight for adults and kids during the season. The judges of the Flotilla this year are the Southport Elementary Art Students. The Flotilla is scheduled for December 8th, and the fun starts around 7p.m. Bring your blanket, chair and cup of hot cocoa to make the night even more magical!
OAK ISLAND
Like Southport, the Town of Oak Island also offers a full slate of holiday events geared toward children and families. “During the holidays, we have programs that bring families, neighbors, and strangers together,” Oak Island Parks and Recreation Director Rebecca Squires said. The Town’s traditional tree lighting kicks things off on November 30 this year. The Town also serves as host for the Southport-Oak Island Chamber of Commerce’s Christmas by the Sea Parade, and hosts its own Supper with Santa, a Holiday Craft Market and a flashlight candy cane hunt. One event that was new last year is the Gingerbread Beach House contest. “Last year was the first year for the gingerbread house, and the houses were very creative,” Squires said. “So far this year we have 18 entries, and expect folks to go all out with their beach themes. We saw all types of houses last year from simple beach shacks, to three-story beach homes with working lights on stilts!” While Oak Island is not known for being a wintry wonderland, Squires said, regardless if it’s as cold as the mountains or as warm as the Bahamas, town staff provides the traditional holiday staples, such
as hot cocoa and cookies during the Tree Lighting and Holiday Market. But she said they also put an “Oak Island spin” on the familiar holiday traditions. The “Night Before Christmas at Oak Island” reading at the Tree Lighting is an Oak Island version with Santa on a jet ski, and visions of trout and drum in the children’s heads. And this year, Santa will make his grand entrance on a boat instead of a sleigh during the Tree Lighting. That’s something “you will not see in Raleigh or Greensboro,” Squires said. Coastal communities are always seeing new faces in town, and for those who recently made Oak Island their home, Squires offered this sage advice. “To enjoy the holidays on Oak Island, first, slow down. Then plan to attend one of the many Oak Island holiday functions with new friends and neighbors, or family. Take a walk through one of the Town parks, and enjoy the sights and sounds of the fall/wintertime on Oak Island. And, don’t forget to visit the Recreation Center for a new exercise class, or to visit the fitness facility to have fun while working off all those cookies and cocoa,” she said.
began practicing its Christmas lineup in September. Music Director Greg Walker said he’s actually already thinking about music for next year’s concert, but he gets serious about selecting music after Easter. He said he doesn’t start out with a particular theme in mind, but that one evolves as he works. He does, however, always include five or six secular songs that lead into a section of Christian themed-pieces. “I always try to tell the Christmas story with music by keeping the timeline -- waiting in darkness, journey to Bethlehem, angel announcement, etc. -- intact as much as possible,” Walker said. “Also, instead of doing a lot of music nobody has ever heard of, I also try to stick to familiar carols with a “twist.” This year’s concert, with performances on December 7 and 9, is built around “Joy to the World.” Walker said he found a “very cool, rhythmic arrangement of the song” which will be performed toward the end of the concert. “We will try to show how the world was longing for a Savior, and was filled with joy at the birth of Je-
sus,” Walker said. Working with a choir on Christmas music in September may sound a bit strange, but Walker said, that mostly, his group seemed ready for it, though Hurricane Florence did upset the schedule a bit. “It definitely gets easier to work on once the summer heat breaks and it starts to feel like fall, though.” All are welcome to see Christmas concerts and performances at any of the area churches, and Ocean View is no exception. Asked what he hopes audiences will take away from the the Christmas concert, Walker summed it up with one word, saying it was joy “If everyone isn’t smiling when it’s over, we did something wrong. “Hopefully this concert kicks off their Christmas season in such a way that they won’t focus on shopping and bills, but instead focus on their families and the reason for the season.” For all the details on these events and more, look for the calendar section of this issue.

Thanks to a hero good Samaritan, Rhonda Till lived to tell her amazing story. STORY BY RHONDA TILL & KAYLA FOUTS

very year drunk drivers kill more than 10,000 people in the US. Rhonda Till was lucky to survive when she was hit by a drunk driver. Here is her amazing tale told by her and the good Samaritan who helped save her life...
OCTOBER 2, 2014 RHONDA
My day started out as any other day. My plans were to head to the coast from my Kernersville home. It was a beautiful day and I decided to alter my normal travel route and head west on I-40 so I could stop and do some shopping along the way. After a few hours of shopping I got back on the road. I wanted to avoid heavy traf-
fic in Wilmington and get to my destination before dark. Around 4:30 I exited off 140 onto 421 and the last thing I remember is passing by Eagle Island Produce stand. Seconds later I had an unfortunate encounter with a drunk driver… I have no recollection of the crash. There is about an hour of my life that is wiped from my memory and that is blessing. I assumed I had lost consciousness. The first thing I remember is a man’s voice saying,

Rhonda and Kayla
“My name is Brett. I want you to remember that. What’s my name?” I repeated his name and he said, “Very good”. I glanced around and wondered what in the world had happened. I couldn’t move. The driver’s seat was smooshed up against the console and I was stuck there. Brett wanted to know if I could wiggle my toes. He couldn’t see them. I was stuck in a bentover position so I could easily glance down at my feet and I could thankfully wiggle my toes. Again he said that was good and he said they were working on getting me out of the car. He explained we were both covered in some type of tarp to protect me from glass and whatnot as they peeled back the top of my vehicle. He also said he would not leave me. Somehow they got me on a backboard and I vaguely remember being lifted from the car and put in an ambulance. My daughter ran up to the stretcher when I was taken from the ambulance. She was very scared and her voice was trembling. I wondered how she knew to be there. She accompanied me as my injuries were being assessed. Fractured pelvis, ruptured spleen, broken humerus, fractured sternum, etc. As I waited to be admitted to the hospital, I talked to my husband on the phone and he told me about a very special young lady that I had no memory of…
KAYLA
It was a typical Thursday. I was on my way to church after work. A car came speeding past me in the center turn lane and drove into oncoming traffic causing a horrific accident. I pulled into the center lane several yards
back to leave room for emergency vehicles that would undoubtedly soon be making their appearance. I grabbed my medical bag and sprinted to the chaos. I was stopped by a gentleman who informed me he was a doctor and able to help. I handed him a couple pair of gloves and we began to triage the victims, going in opposite directions. I ran up to a Mazda and assessed a woman who told me her name was Rhonda. There was a couple standing by her car. They were from a car that was behind her when the accident happened. I explained to Rhonda that I was a CNA currently in nursing school and I was there to help. I assessed her injuries and told her I would be back to further assist her. I needed to check on the others from the accident. The driver of the truck that caused the accident had a compound fracture just above her ankle. Unfortunately, she didn’t speak English… and she reeked of alcohol. While assessing her, several bystanders were surrounding her vehicle and trying to find someone to communicate with her. With my limited knowledge of Spanish, I kept repeating,“No muevete, por favor” which translates to “Do not move, please.” I assessed two other gentlemen in an older pick-up truck who appeared to have minor injuries and complained of chest and rib pain most likely associated with the impact of the steering wheel and dashboard. Lastly, I ran up to the fourth car involved. There were minor injuries there as well. I concluded that my assistance would be most beneficial to Rhonda. I ran back to her and told her again who I was and asked if there was anyone I could call for her. She said, “Yes, my husband, Randy.” She told me his phone number. I asked her
Southport Magazine 2016-2017 SOI Chamber Small Business of the Year Winner
CURRENTS to repeat it to be certain I had the number correct. I called and informed him of what had happened. This was one of the hardest phone calls I have ever had to make. I could hear the fear in his voice as he asked more questions trying to understand what all had happened. Emergency personnel arrived. They wanted a little back story of who all was involved and injured. When I told them there were no casualties, it took them by surprise because of how mangled the vehicles were. They jumped right in and split into two groups to start cutting the two individuals who were essentially trapped in their cars out, Rhonda and the driver that caused the accident. It took much longer to get Rhonda out than the other driver. I stayed in constant communication with Randy until Rhonda was loaded in the ambulance and on her way to the hospital. I had missed a call from him due to the loud background noise of the machinery being used to cut open the vehicles. (I still have that voicemail on my phone.) He asked me to give Rhonda a message. He said tell her that he loved her and he would be there as soon as he could, and that Katie and Matt would be waiting for her at the hospital. As the chaos lessened and things were starting to wrap up, a news reporter pulled me aside and asked me to make a statement. The reporter called me a hero on several occasions, to which my response was “I’m not a hero. I was just where I was supposed to be, when I was supposed to be there”. That night I received a text message from Rhonda’s daughter, Katie, updating me on her condition and thanking me for everything. I asked if I could stop by the hospital and visit after church on Sunday and she said I could. Sunday came and I remember walking up to the door to her
Rhonda’s car
room not knowing what to expect. I knew Rhonda didn’t remember much from the accident and did not recall our encounter. I finally knocked on the door and went in and reintroduced myself and told Rhonda a little of what happened. I spent some time with her and her family, meeting her daughter, son-in-law, granddaughters, and a couple of her friends. I offered if she needed anything to let me know and I would do what I could. We’ve stayed in touch since the accident. Rhonda came to my going away party before I left for Army Basic Combat Training. We wrote a few letters and recently have been able to spend more time together. I am so grateful our paths crossed, although I hate the horrific circumstances. But I have gained such a great and true friend.
RHONDA
It is crazy that there is so much I don’t remember. I am so grateful for my good Samaritan hero, Kayla. Even though she says she is not a hero! Her being there and talking to me could very well have saved my life. My fractures have healed but I had to depend on others for so much for al-

most 3 months. It was very frustrating but I have a wonderful family and a great group of friends that got me through. I love and appreciate them more than I can ever express. To this day, people ask what hap-
pened to the drunk driver. I do not know. I tried not to think about it much during my recovery. I wanted to stay positive and I was just so grateful to be alive.

Kids Making It!

STORY BY JIMMY PIERCE
K
ids Making It serves over 500 kids (boys and girls) annually from ages seven through early adulthood who are at-risk of juvenile delinquency, low-income, court-involved, or victims of crime. Inspired by the birth of his son, the program’s founder, who was then practicing law full-time, started Kids Making It as a volunteer effort in 1994.
He ultimately left the practice of law to develop Kids Making It into a full-time program, and began in 2000 with a hand-tools program for young public housing kids. KMI has grown steadily over the years and now serves youth in five distinct programs, all of which are designed to help connect work to income. Our goal is for all of the kids we serve to stay in school, stay out of trouble, graduate and go on to a successful adulthood through jobs or college.
PROGRAMS
In our Introductory Woodworking Classes for pre-teens, we introduce kids to hand tools and teach them to build a project, such as a birdhouse or a box, which they get to keep. We give them a tour of our shop and tell them that when they turn 13, they can come every day to our afterschool program. In our teen Vocational and Entrepreneurial Program, we teach employable vocational skills in a complete woodworking shop. In our gift shop, our teens can sell their products, and; earn 100 percent of the profits from their sales, receiving checks monthly. This micro-enterprise introduction to the free market system offers at-risk teens long-term mentorship, vocational instruction, & entrepreneurial experience along with job placement, college admissions assistance, and, through a strengths-based social work component, and Individual Developmental Plans for each teen. Many come for years on end, and we are there for them and with them every step of the way to help them succeed through adolescence and into adulthood. In our KMI Apprenticeship Program, we offer part-time, paid on-the-job training positions as a stepping stone to employment in the private sector for older transitioning students, who complete larger production orders for the general public. This is the first real job for most of them, providing them with a solid work reference for future em-
ployment, as they are held to workplace standards regarding work ethic, scheduling and quality control. In this program we use not only our traditional woodworking machinery, but a CNC Router; a Laser Engraver (digital fabrication technology), and a Hydraulic Copy Lathe as well. With these tools, our Apprentices can complete production orders for laser engraved ornaments and jewelry, name badges, awards and plaques, custom crafted clocks and pens, corporate gifts, and other items. In 2015, in partnership with the City of Wilmington, we started a Summer Jobs Program to provide employment to low-income, at-risk teens, as a result of which 30 teens had employment that summer. We are now partnering in this program with the Blue Ribbon Commission and Educational Data Solutions, Inc. (EDSI). EDSI is a local Workforce Innovation; Opportunity Act agency that channels federal funding to place teens in summer jobs. These students do not become employees of KMI, but rather, through their funding, EDSI pays the students’ wages and provides all of their worker’s comp. insurance. This summer we had 43 teens in various paying jobs across the city. We are especially proud of our “KMI Crew”. Each summer, we offer a handful of jobs for our older teens to work on Habitat for Humanity jobsites (constructing new HFH homes for deserving families) and Wilmington Area Rebuilding Ministry jobsites (doing much-needed home repairs for low-income homeowners who can no longer afford to have a wheelchair ramp built, or rotting porch floor boards replaced, etc.) And although we have had a zero drop-out rate for years, and all of our teens have graduated from high school, unfortunately far too many of them do not have an educational foundation solid enough for them to go on to college. Too many are faced with the lure of fast money on
Teens in the afterschool woodworking class learning how to safely use power tools.
the streets vs. the reality of low-paying fast food jobs. To meet this need we are beginning a new Skilled Trades Program, to teach the basics of the construction trades to our older teens who will soon be facing these choices, as the beginning of a pathway into a career that can provide a lifetime of meaningful work and a good income. Professional contractors will help teach introductory classes in the construction trades, such as electrical, plumbing, masonry, construction carpentry, and HVAC. Construction is booming in our area, and the jobs are there. Through this program, and our relationships with local contractors, we will place those students who have developed an interest in a career in the trades in entry-level positions on jobsites, to start earning a paycheck and get a taste for what it is like to work on a jobsite and be part of a team constructing a home or building. As our district informed us, “nothing stops a bullet like a paycheck”. Further, a local family foundation wants to offer scholarships to Cape Fear Community College for our transitioning students. And with 53 vo-tech programs, CFCC is well- positioned to provide further training in the trades as a hands-on educational steppingstone into the workforce.
OUTCOMES & DATA
We track demographics, correlations and outcomes for the kids we serve, for as long as we have them in the program. Studies show a strong correlation between poverty, delinquency, mental health issues, and victimization. All of our teens are at-risk of juvenile delinquency or court-involved, the vast majority are low income, the majority have a mental health diagnosis, 75% have been a crime victim, and most are from high crime neighborhoods and from single- (or no-) parent households. Although 20 percent of our local teenagers do not graduate with their class on time (25 percent of our minority teens do not), we have had a zero dropout rate for many years, and most all of our kids graduate on time. We also track what we call our “getting in trouble” rate. We provide a community ser-

vice placement site for our juvenile court, and in this role we not only let youth in the system complete their community service at our shop, but we also offer a space in our teen program for them as well, and most then become a “KMI Teen.” For any teen who is court-involved upon entry, our goal is for them to work through their involvement successfully, and not recidivate. If he or she is not in the system upon entry, our goal is for them to stay out of trouble and out of the system. Our “getting in trouble” rate for all of our teens, year in and year out, is typically The introductory woodworking classes, where we 2 percent.
LONG-TERM IMPACT
Many of the marginalized youth we serve are in families that are caught up in generational cycles of poverty, unemployment (or underemployment), lack of education, broken homes, long-term dependence on government assistance for the basics of life and, often, involvement in the criminal justice system or incarceration. These cycles can only be broken if the kids in these families, in spite of their environment and their family’s struggles, can finish high school and either enter the workforce in meaningful, sustaining employment or go on to higher education. We believe that for every kid who comes through Kids Making It, who can thereby make the transition successfully out of high school and become a contributing, successful adult, these cycles are broken. And, by extension, and to that extent, their success will be helping to drive improvements in areas such as poverty, welfare entitlements, and dependence on the government and our institutions for income, food, shelter and health care, and in the crime and incarceration rates. We count success one kid at a time, but the

Bow) and floors are wide plank wood. The current layout is true to the design of Samuel S. Drew, with the largest room separated from the parlor/dining room and a smaller bedroom by a large hallway. The parlor/dining room has one side of the original two-sided fireplace and a bay window. The small bedroom has the other side of the fireplace. At the rear of the house an addition allows for a kitchen and another bedroom displaying the exposed roof rafters. The original staircase rises perpendicular to the hallway at the back of the original house.

owners of the Joseph N. Daniels House. Originally built by river pilot, John R. Newton, Sr., near the end of the 19th century, the house was purchased, renovated and a second story added in 1901 by master carpenters, A. J. Robbins and Joseph N. Daniels. The renovations tended toward Greek revival, with some of their own Southport designs. The interior boasts transoms over every interior door, heart of pine floors and bead board wainscoting. The house remained in the Daniel family until 1998 when it was purchase by the Callari family. Although modern conveniences have been added, the house still retains its original Southport charm.

#3 - 210 W. WEST STREET JONI SCHINSKE, OWNER The Asa Dosher Home, #168 on the Historic Register, is located on a spacious lot with beautiful old oak trees on one of Southport’s most historic streets. W. T. Ottoway, carpenter/builder, designed and built the house in 1895 as one of the first 100 lots in Southport. The house features charming woodwork, many Southport Bows and hardwood floors. It once featured interesting shingle designs and sawn work on the exterior (this siding is still on the house under the vinyl siding that was added in the 1970s). The front staircase is original with the back staircase being added in the 70s. The Schinskes purchased the home in early 2000 and added the 2-bedroom, 2-bath carriage apartment in 2007.
#3 #4 - 308 W. WEST STREET, KATHY & LARRY CABRAL, OWNERS Built in 1905, the National Registry of Historic Places describes it as “a well designed two-story frame house on a tree shaded lot.” A few years later, a wing was added on the right side. Renovation, completed in 2015, required replacement of the original wainscoting in the hallway as well as the exterior doors along with repair of the footings to the main house and front porch. New mahogany doors were designed to match the original doors which were refurbished for the study. The newel post and stair railing are original as are the heart pine floors in the original part of the house. A 2014 renovation added more rooms, and the front porch was restored and the garage, crofter and rear courtyard were completed this past summer.
#4 #5 - 404 W. WEST STREET, KAY & TAYLOR JOLLIFF, OWNER Built by Robert Woodside in 1905, Kay and Taylor Jolliff have loved it since 2001, when they purchased the house and did a complete renovation. Original features include the lovely pine floors, the fireplace in the study and the stairway and newel posts. Of interest -- the original builder, Mr. Woodside, was the grandfather of Pattie Jenkins Hooks, local restaurateur. Current furnishings are a comfortable eclectic mix of family antiques, mid century pieces and pet friendly upholstered chairs. The kitchen features a gallery wall of art by local artists and the chalkboard powder room has become a cherished guest book.

CHRISTMAS TOUR OF HOMES
# 6 - 507 BURRINGTON STREET, JOHN MARATO, OWNER The Guthrie House was built in 1886 as a one story cottage. Over time more rooms were added along with porches and a bay window. The house was moved from Dry Street to its new home in May, 2016. The restoration and additions reflect the period and character of the original house. Some of the original heart pine floors were uncovered and restored. The modern amenities also reflect the period and character of a 130-year-old house but allow for modern comforts.
#6 # 7 - 515 QUARTER MASTER DRIVE, BONNIE BRAY & JOHN KEIFFER, OWNERS The homeowners, John Keiffer and Bonnie Bray, dreamed about the potential for this oasis during the three years they designed their perfect house. John was the architect and Bonnie, the project coordinator, together they found the ideal builder, whose contribution made it all come together two years ago. Filled with books and artwork, the house is 2900 square feet, has 42 windows, 18-foot-tall ceilings, 12 overhead fans, and a reading room reached by a library ladder above the foyer. Be sure to check out the hand-gathered Chesapeake Bay sharks teeth embedded in the concrete kitchen bar counter top.

#7 #8 - 600 MACKENZIE CIRCLE, WAYNE & KAREN ROGERS, OWNERS Built in 2015, this home exudes your typical southern living cottage. The builder, The Cottages Building Company, was showcased on the cover of the 2018 March edition of Southern Living magazine for the 10 secrets of curb appeal. The owners, Wayne and Karen Rogers, wanted a craftsman style house with curb appeal and open concept living. The house has a great front porch with rocking chairs and a swing. The open concept on the inside is perfect for large gatherings and entertaining. Music flows throughout the house via customized entertainment system beginning on the front porch, flowing throughout out the house and ending on the back porch. The house has customized wood work, coffered ceiling in living room, shiplap walls, built-in cabinets on both sides of the fireplace and shadow box chair rails. The dining area has a circa 1900 English bar. The house has a screened in back porch that looks at a pond swarming with wildlife that transitions to a stamped concrete patio with a built-in stacked stone grill.

SHOWCASE Elf Jr., The Musical The Brunswick Little Theatre delights audiences of all ages with Elf. STORY BY AMI BROWN
T
he Starstruck Performers present - ELF, THE MUSICAL, JR. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on November 30, December 1, 7, and 8, and 3 p.m. December 2 and 9 at Brunswick Little Theatre, 8068 River Road. Tickets are $20 for adults and $12 for students with ID. Tickets are available at www.brunswicklittletheatre.com and Ricky Evans Gallery.
Brunswick Little Theatre’s youth division, Stagestruck Players, will ring in the holiday season with “Elf the Musical, Jr.”, based on the 2003 hit movie starring Will Farrell. The story begins when Santa reveals to Buddy that he is not an Elf, but the son of a human named Walter Hobbs. With this information Buddy is sent from the North Pole to New York City to find his father. The musical showcases Buddy’s arrival in New York and his puzzling and humorous encounters navigating the city and his interactions with humans. Buddy is lovable, enthusiastic, and sweetly innocent. His story is one
of joy, love, acceptance, the importance of family and hope. Musical numbers range from introspective ballad to Broadway kick line. The cast features outstanding young performers with numerous stage credits. Paul Bertelsen is the designer, Bev Veenker is the choreographer, and Deborah Skillman is the director, assisted by Ryan Tewell. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on November 30, December 1, 7, and 8, and 3 p.m. December 2 and 9 at Brunswick Little Theatre, 8068 River Road. Tickets are $20 for adults and $12 for students with ID. Tickets are available at www.brunswicklittletheatre. com and Ricky Evans Gallery. “Elf, the Musical, JR.” is presented through special arrangement with and all authorized materials are supplied by Music Theatre International, New York, NY (212) 541 – 4684 mtishows.com. Buddy, a young orphan mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported to the North Pole. The would-be elf is raised unaware that he is actually a human, until his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father and discover his true identity. Faced with the harsh reality that his father is on the naughty list, and his stepbrother doesn’t even believe in Santa, Buddy is determined to win over his new family and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas. This modern day holiday classic is sure to make everyone a young performer and embrace their inner elf. After all, the best way to spread Christmas Cheer is singing loud for all to hear.

Cathy Johnston and Sharon Faw Martin met in 2001 at Blue Ridge Healing Arts Academy Massage Therapy School. Cathy moved to Oak Island in 2004 and Sharon visited regularly. The dream of one day opening a massage and wellness center on the island was realized in November 2013, when they established Hearts & Sol Wellness. In the beginning it was just the two of them, and now Hearts & Sol Wellness is a community of practitioners dedicated to share services and heartfelt care with each client. The ability to connect and give back to our wonderful community is a blessing every day.

CHEERS Here We Go A Wassailing
The perfect warm drink for the holiday season STORY BY JEFFREY STITES
A
side from the Nativity, my favorite Christmas story is Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” The characters in that short story just really speak to me. Bob Cratchit is the picture of patience and perseverance. Each Ghost has its own unique personality, from melancholy to jolly to downright frightening. Ebenezer Scrooge’s journey from the worst of people to the best gives up hope for everyone’s redemption, even our own.

But it’s not only the movers and shakers of the story that appeal to me. My personal favorite is Mr. Fezziwig, Scrooge’s boss and mentor as a young man. Mr. Fezziwig functions in the story as the host of a glorious company Christmas party. That’s it. He has a few lines and is fondly remembered by modern-day Ebenezer, but in the end he’s simply the party guy. But he’s the archetype of the party host. He’s generous and jolly and silly and loud and insists that everyone stop all that work stuff and join the fun. Who wouldn’t want Mr. Fezziwig as a boss, or better yet, to be seen like he is by others? As a Beer Guy, though, I had to wonder…..what sort of drinks would Mr. Fezziwig serve? Of course there’d be ales and hard ciders and wine and brandy. But those were everyday drinks in Victorian times and this was a party, a once a year extravaganza, so what else? Punch. Victorians loved punch. And punch loved them, because many of the things we take for granted, water and milk and eggs, were dangerous in the late 19th century. Lack of sanitation, rivers spoiled by early industrialization and difficulty in keeping anything cold meant that one’s milk and dairy had to be made into a punch to be safe. Luckily, two great preservatives, one of which doubled as an antiseptic, had become very affordable by this time--sugar and rum. Yes, Victorians’ mixed drinks featured milk and eggs. Milk does a body good, of course, but without refrigeration
it needs a little help, and that help came in the form of mass quantities of hard liquor and sugar. I’ve seen a few old recipes and they are pretty horrifying. I mean they tried to liven things up with cloves and nutmeg and citrus fruits (when they could get them), but a gallon of curdled milk mixed with a quart of rum and couple cups of sugar is still curdled milk. So what’s a Fezziwig fan to do? We want to be kind of authentic, but also I don’t want to die or become seriously ill in pursuit of maximum Fezziwiggery. The solution is Wassail. Wassail is totally authentic. It has its own Christmas carol. It most certainly would have made an appearance at
Jonathon Richmond (RIP) as Mr. Fezziwig from the Fezziwig’s Ball - Brunswick Little Theatre
Southport Magazine 2016-2017 SOI Chamber Small Business of the Year Winner
CHEERS Old Fezziwig’s table. Wassail is a cider-based punch served to carolers who go door to door in search of more delicious punch. It’s unclear which came first. Was it called wassailing because they were looking for wassail or was the punch called wassail because it was served to wassailers? It’s a bit of a chicken or egg thing that I’ll leave to wiser minds than my own. I’m more concerned with making a wassail of my own. Lucky for us, wassail is as free-form as sangria and shandy. It’s always apple-based, either cider or hard cider. If you’re not using hard cider, it’s enhanced with rum or brandy or both. Spices such as cloves, nutmeg, allspice, cinnamon and ginger can be introduced. If you’re feeling fancy you’ll float a few lemons or oranges on top. And because this is a Christmas drink served at night in chilly England, the punch is best served hot. In the Christmas Spirit of Giving, here is my personal recipe for wassail. I generally make this the Saturday of the Christmas
By The Sea Parade on Oak Island, taking some along to enjoy while we watch and leaving plenty to accompany our evening of tree trimming after the parade. It makes for a jolly time.
INGREDIENTS: 1 gallon apple cider 1-2 cups rum (spiced is good, but I like dark. You can use light if you’d rather. Or use brandy. Or leave the hooch out. It’s up to you) A cheese cloth bundle containing whole cloves, nutmeg and a few slices of fresh ginger. How much of each is up to your taste. 3-6 cinnamon sticks. I use lots as I like cinnamon. 1 orange, sliced with the skin on You’ll just put all of the above into a pot or Dutch oven or crock pot and warm it thoroughly. Don’t boil it, just get it nice and hot and keep it that way until you’re finished. I usually serve in a coffee mug because that’s what’s around, but anything from Styrofoam cups to fancy glasses would do just fine. Jeff Stites as a Victorian straight out of a Dickenson Novel.

HISTORY Historic Homes
Get the inside scoop on the history of the Southport Historic Home Plaques STORY BY KASS FINCHER
I
f you’re planning to join in the WinterFest Tour of Homes here in Southport this month, you will get to see some beautiful historic homes from the inside, elegantly decorated to celebrate the holiday season. But these are a just small sample of the many historic homes that make our town so colorfully quaint. And most of these downtown homeowners join in the holiday spirit too, with exterior decorations that make one’s neighborhood walk even more fun.
The Tour, sponsored by the Southport Historical Society, is a much-anticipated community event and a fundraiser for educational scholarships and other activities. The Society was established in 1976 “to preserve and interpret the unique history of Southport,” according to their website. In addition to the Tour, the organization offers lectures, tours, preservation of historic properties like the Old Jail and old cemeteries, and visitor information at the Fort Johnston Visitor Center. One other role the Society plays is identifying and installing plaques on historic homes and buildings. On its website, the organization describes the process for requesting such a designation. The homeowner does the research and makes an application to the Society. The house or building must be at least 75 years old. Copies of deeds from the courthouse in Bolivia provide the earliest information possible, including who owned the house originally. After the application is submitted, with a check for $125 to the Society, the organization will review the documents for approval. Southport residents Martha and Bill Johnson review the documents submitted to the Society, researching records like deeds, census reports and even wills. They receive a few new applications each year, often uncovering surprising information about the original owners. “Southport is full of stories, and sometimes the stories aren’t backed up by actual facts,” Martha said. “Some names of the houses were word-of-mouth, what they were known by, not necessarily the original owners. Bill will go do his research on the house. Then the question is do you give it the name of what people have always called it, or do you give it the name of the original owner or builder?” They try to go with the name of the original owner or builder. Martha gave another
interesting example of their investigations. “The first owner of a house on East Nash was Dr. T. B. McClintic, who worked at the quarantine station,” she explained. “Bill learned that the doctor lived here as an adult in 1900 and studied yellow fever. After he left here he went to Montana and helped study Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, where he unfortunately died of that disease.” The good doctor was also the namesake for a tugboat in Wilmington that was originally commissioned in 1932 to transport doctors to ships to treat sick seamen. The current owners of the Dr. T. B. McClintic house were excited to hear about the life of the original owner; the Johnsons enjoy doing the research and especially enjoy presenting the homeowners with not only a plaque, but also a bit of history about their house. If your home is approved and your plaque is received, you would join over 130 homes in our town with this historic designation. In the book “The Architecture of Southport,” author Carl Lounsbury describes homes built in the late 1700s all the way up to the early 1900s. The book, available at the Fort Johnston Visitor Center, identifies and describes 151 historic structures in Southport. Lounsbury notes that the earliest-built home still standing is probably the Walker-Pyke house on Bay Street, constructed in the early 1800s. Lounsbury notes that as Smithville (now Southport) grew in popularity as a summer resort before the Civil War, several boarding houses were built to accommodate the visitors. A still-standing example is the Bell-Clemmons house on Moore Street. After the war ended, building activity was slow. But in the late 1800s, the town’s appearance radically changed, with more than 100 houses built in the last decade of that century. Streets such as Atlantic, Brunswick and
Musette Steck presenting plaque to Mr and Mrs Robert Carroll
Howe were extended to provide lots for new homes. The designs of these homes in the late 19th and early 20th century were the work of master carpenter-builders like A.J. Robbins, Henry and Joseph Daniel, and George Davis. They were the most prolific builders in Southport; they were skilled craftsmen who often repeated designs their customers liked. They often used the “double cottage” plan, a one story house with two rooms on each side of a central hallway. Dozens of homes in Southport were built in this way, notably the R. Dosher Sr. house on Lord Street, and the C.G. Smith and Foley cottages on Atlantic. Their plans were fairly traditional. But one other builder ventured outside of the local building tradition to experiment with unconventional floor plans and irregular roof lines, somewhat reminiscent of the Victorian approach. His name was W. T. Ottaway; one
Southport Magazine 2016-2017 SOI Chamber Small Business of the Year Winner
of his designs is the T. St. George house on Lord Street. Though Lounsbury says the Great Depression ended the era of the great master carpenters of Southport, we still see many examples today of beautiful design and construction of new homes that reflect the traditions of the past. We also know that many of the town’s old historic homes have been renovated and brought up to the present with interior and exterior upgrades and additions, preserving the past but affording today’s amenities. Whether the houses are new construction or old homes revived, the residential character of downtown Southport is alive and well. So be sure to walk around this holiday season and appreciate the work of our past and present designers and builders, not to mention the homeowners’ seasonal touch, and you’ll be glad you live here.

They offer mostly creative adult education art classes from painting and jewelry making to pottery and textiles; BCC at Southport is a great outlet for you to explore your creative side at a convenient Southport location. Chicago area during my high school years. Then back to Ohio. While I was in Cleveland Heights, waiting to go to Ohio State University I took some art classes at the local high school,” she said. She has been a full time local resident for 26 years, although her family has been visiting the area since her childhood. “I always knew I would live around the Southport area, “ she said. “My parents built a house at the beach about 50 years ago. So this has always been home. When I was in elementary school, my father was the superintendent in Elyria, Ohio,” she said. “His art director happens to have a house here at Long Beach. I first walked in that old building in 2006 and met Kimberly Smittle Caroon there. She has been the teacher through BCC for 25 years, moving with the program three years ago to the Lord Street campus. Caroon is a fabulous artist in her own right, with many awards to her name and more than 1,500 students taught. “I was born in Ohio. We moved around a lot because my father was climbing the ladder in the education system,” said Caroon. “We moved approximately every three to four years. I did not like moving so often, however, it taught me how to make friends quickly. We lived outside the

golfing buddies, the art director invited us to the beach so he and my dad could play golf. I was only seven years old the first time we came to the beach. I immediately fell in love with the art director’s wife, who we called Aunt Jenny. She and I made a connection and because her husband had a studio in their basement in Ohio, I got to make my first coil pot during a sleepover. I was so involved with that pot she had a hard time calling me up for lunch.” According to Caroon, things were a lot different here in the Southport area 50 years ago. “Back then, not only were there no stops lights, there are no stop signs,” she said. “There were wild boar, bobcats and practically no houses on what was called Long Beach. But as kids we didn’t care, we had a rowboat (our paddles were two by fours) and we paddled around Davis Canal. Slid down yellow banks. And spent so much time in the ocean I’m surprised that we were not attacked by sharks!” Caroon credits her mother as her role model and artistic inspiration. “My mother Drusilla Smittle is an excellent painter; I grew up watching her create gorgeous paintings.” says Caroon. “I feel like I was
born an artist,” says Caroon. “At least I was groomed to believe that and it’s stuck! Fortunately, while growing up, I was surrounded by all forms of art,” she explained. “When I graduated from Ohio State my parents offered me a job that paid a lot more than being an art teacher. So I took the higher-paying job and had a studio built in my backyard. But I wanted more, including children, and I was lucky enough to have girl, boy twins- Skylyn and Cash.” According to Caroon, there is no better art medium than clay because it is so versatile and the ideas and possibilities are limitless. “With clay you can sculpt, throw on the wheel, you can carve, you can paint beautiful scenes on your clay. You can pinch, pull, and coil. I think it is so cool that you can take something that Mother Nature made (clay) and make art out of it, whether functional or a piece of art to look at in awe, or both!” Caroon’s clay work is very sleek and beautifully finished and her style is timeless and recognizable. She puts a lot of time and love into each piece of pottery she makes. Although Caroon has taught many differ-
ent projects to students over the years, her favorites were the class projects that she would assign. “We used to have a show at Franklin Square Art Gallery and I assigned a project,” explained Caroon. “We have done everything from shoes, teapots, miniature art, African masks, purses, body parts, and place settings. The best one was totem poles. Each class had to create their own totem pole, which meant they had to come together as a team and agree on measurements and how they could make the totem pole be as one.” Some of the class-made totem poles are on display at the Southport campus. You can reach Caroon by email at k.s. caroon@gmail.com or see her pottery for sale around Southport, including the Franklin Square Gallery, Ricky Evans, and the Maritime Museum. SAVOR Serving Up Seafood Local shop, Haag & Sons brings us the best of local fresh catch STORY BY KASS FINCHER
M
ost local residents know about Haag & Sons Seafood on Oak Island, the home of many fresh seafood choices and cut-toorder service. But not everyone knows the story of owner Jon Haag, whose early love of marine life continues to drive his advocacy for the local seafood industry.
Originally from Long Island, Haag grew up fishing and clamming with his dad and a friend who was a commercial fisherman. “He exposed me to commercial fishing,” Haag relates. “We’d go over to Fire Island and in shallow waters we would pull a seine net through grass. As a nine-yearold kid, I couldn’t believe the amount of sea life coming out of there! I was always intrigued by hat was under the water. When you’re on a boat, most people are looking at the horizon, but I was looking at the water wondering what’s under it.” Haag’s father was an orthopedic surgeon – a profession that Jon thought he would pursue. “I thought that I would be a doctor,” he said. “I used to make rounds with him. I went to Vanderbilt as pre-med, but after being stuck inside in labs, I kept looking for a way out. It just wasn’t for me. I just wanted to get back to the water.”
And that’s what he did. After a stint in California, Haag came back to the East Coast and began exploring the coastal communities from New England to the Carolinas. When he came to the low country of Charleston, he was done. “I fell in love with that place,” he said. “That old maritime history, the historical imperative. I decided I’d move to Charleston.” Haag applied for jobs with the state in Marine Resources, but at the time they had no openings so he went back to fishing – working on a shrimp boat and gill netting. Finally a job came through as a technician working with fishermen out of Georgetown, catching Atlantic sturgeon. The work was interesting but the money was not. Haag decided to go back to fishing, working on the Edisto River, fishing sturgeon, shrimp and shellfish. A little later, he accepted a position with Hieronymous

Seafood in Wrightsville Beach, hauling shrimp from Charleston. It was there that Haag learned the retail business, working two years for Harvey Hieronymous at their location beside the Bridge Tender. A friend called and asked Haag to join him in a venture in Southport, a fish house to be called Southport Fish, on property (now Fishy Fishy) owned by Thad Eure, owner of the popular Angus Barn in Raleigh. But Eure’s death led to the property being sold, so Haag moved on to start a new venture. “I partnered with another guy to start Forty Fathoms, where Flava’s is now,” he said. “We bought from American Fish and Southport Fish, and all up and down the coast. We started hauling fish inland to
the Piedmont area. It was the initial phase of the farm to fork movement, trying to market fish locally instead of shipping it up north. At that time all these inland restaurants were buying frozen fish from all over, and we wanted to support the local fishing industry. There were maybe eight of us that started doing that, and we did really well.” Prior to that effort, many dealers from the south had been selling primarily into New York and Canadian markets, but as these areas got over-supplied, the prices went down and the dealers realized they needed to tap more local markets. The local fishing industry was also facing two other challenges: increased regulations and overseas competition.

SAVOR
The federal regulations, meant to conserve species habitats and prevent overfishing, often caused the fishermen to come out on the wrong side of economic opportunity. “Even now with our snapper-grouper fishery, we have quotas and catch limits and closures,” Haag said. “We have 105 species here locally that are controlled by catch limits and quotas. Before that, there was a proliferation of fish everywhere. “That initial phase of fishing laws really started reducing the fishing fleet and we started losing product.” The overseas competition has been a tough challenge as well. “Ninety percent of the seafood consumed now in the U. S. is imported – from Asia, Central and South America,” Haag said. “We’re competing globally to supply local markets.” But a positive trend is the public interest in local sources for seafood. Haag says the issue, however, is that sometimes consumers don’t buy the more unfamiliar species that local retailers may have more of. “We have unique species here; we’re at the northern range of tropical species. You get up to Hatteras and it’s completely different. My bread and butter for years was grouper, but now because of quotas, it’s other less well known fish like triggerfish. We’re trying to come up with other underutilized species, but the challenge is getting the public to buy those and accept them.” Haag says chefs are the key. With an innovative approach to seafood consumers may not be familiar with, a creative chef can spark interest in new species. “Paul Proudhomme in New Orleans did that with blackened redfish. He took all this red drum, changed the spices and made
it popular, creating value. That’s what has to happen.” Haag bought his current building 25 years ago. Known not only for his fresh catch and custom cut-to-order, Haag has a laser-focus on customers, offering recipe suggestions for the seafood they purchase. Many of his staff have been with him for years. “We’re like a family here; I buy from local fish houses and a handful of fishermen who come direct to me,” he says. “We want to support our fishing community. Even though it’s dwindled in size and number, we don’t want to see it go away.” Haag is a member of Brunswick Catch, a nonprofit aimed at sustaining the livelihood and heritage of the local seafood industry. You can read more about the heyday of the local fishing industry; when you head to Haag’s, pick up a copy of “Back in the Day in Brunswick County,” by Jimmy and May Moore. Through its stories and photographs, the book captures the lively maritime activity once animating our waterfront. Proceeds are donated to Brunswick Catch. We seafood lovers can also support Brunswick Catch by asking for local seafood. At our seafood retailers, markets and restaurants, we can play a role by supporting this long tradition of fishing here on our beautiful coastal shores. Just ask for what’s local; do your part.
