LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Getting into the Swing of Spring Another issue behind me and I feel like I am now getting into the swing of Spring! This April issue is a special one, paying tribute to Guy Phillips, local musician that recently passed away. Death is always a hard thing to deal with, knowing what to say, what not to say, it’s a very touchy subject – especially to those deeply sadden and still mourning. Southport Magazine felt called to recognize this local resident. It’s amazing at how much this one person contributed to the music scene… touched and influenced so many in our community and around the world. Southport Magazine strives to give the community a voice, showcasing businesses and highlighting all that our coastal area has to offer. We also want to stay current, interesting and always growing. We are happy to add a new section to the magazine called ART BEAT! Carla Edstrom, local artist, will be seeking out a local artist each month, and bringing you a fresh take on their art, showcasing their talent and skill. Hopefully these articles will inspire you to check out the local galleries, purchase local art or take that pottery class you’ve been considering for years, but never have gotten around to. This first ART BEAT article is a little introduction to Carla, her own art practice and her artistic story.

This issue is indeed a very special one. Southport lost a huge presence in December of 2016, and Southport Magazine wanted to not only acknowledge his con-
tribution to the music scene, community and friends but give him a fitting tribute so each of you could learn a little more about this amazing guy… no ordinary guy… Guy Phillips. While looking for a cover photo, I came across an old grainy black and white image that Deb Klipp had sent to me. I knew it was not high enough resolution for the cover. But somehow I knew it was the one I wanted to use. It spoke to me, Guy looked like a Rock Star in this photo. He looked soulful, solemn and I can imagine that his guitar is in his hands. He’s lost in his world – his world of music. I called on a talented graphic designer, Ashley Brown, to re-create the image digitally. She took the old photo and turned it into a cool piece of art, fitting for the cover. I love this digital version, it’s simple and beautiful. I think it represents Guy and is a nice tribute to his memory as well.

CURRENTS No Ordinary Guy A tribute to Guy Phillips, musician, inspiration, guitar-player BY: AMI BROWN
I
never had the pleasure of meeting Guy Phillips, but after reading these memories, I almost feel like I knew him. His presence in the Southport music scene echoes his musical vibes today and will for years to come. His lasting influence on these musicians is a real testament to his talent, his genuine personality and his positive attitude. His friends have all generously reminisced and shared some of their fondest memories so we can all get to know a little more about the one they call “Yug”, Guy Phillips. FROM DALE MACPHERSON
Southport harmonica player/friend for 30 years I have been involved in music from the time I was a child. I sat on the piano beside my cousin Shirley and learned to sing harmony. At the age of 14 while working in Wards Grill in my home town of Whiteville; a traveler came into the grill and needed $4.50 for a bus ticket to Wilmington. He had a cheap guitar on which he had scratched the words “MOON GUY”, apparently with a pocket knife. I borrowed the money from Mr. Ward and purchased the guitar. I didn’t realize what an impact that act of kindness would have on the rest my life. Many years passed before I met Albert Rogers and Guy Phillips. We began to play some gigs together. It was a privilege and pleasure to play with such a gifted guitar player. Guy had good licks on the guitar that would do any singer proud. I had no idea at the time that he had played with so many of the people who had influenced my personal musical style. As we got too be close friends; we would chat about our musical experiences and friends. He would speak of folks who I had dreamed of meeting. Once while we were doing a gig; I introduced the players on stage. I mentioned that he had a good friend named Emmylou who was very
successful in the music business. If you know Guy; you can visualize the way he looked down and shook his head in disgust as he played his flawless introduction solo. I knew that I had made a mistake. Later during the break he gave-me-hell for name dropping. That was the last time I ever publicly mentioned his affiliation with the STARS that he knew and had played with through the years. As we continued through the years, I looked forward to the times that I would start an old song (not on the play list) that most had forgotten and see him look at me with that sly smile of approval and start calling out the cords to any in the band members who might be unfamiliar with the tune. Some of best gigs that I have ever done were with “Old Yug”. I am sure that St. Peter will give him that sly smile of approval as he enters in to ETERNAL REST. My prayers go out to the family and friends of the best guitar player that I have had the pleasure of playing with. Rest In Peace Guy!
FROM PAUL DECKER
Virginia singer/songwriter/friend for 50 years There was an active local folk scene in Virginia Beach and Norfolk throughout the middle sixties, centered mainly around The Folk Ghetto in Norfolk and The Upstairs in www.SouthportMag.com / APRIL 2017 / Southport Magazine 5

Virginia Beach. A bunch of us, musicians and friends, had a house at 319 16th St. in Virginia Beach right around the corner from The Upstairs. We became notorious enough that people from up and down the mid-Atlantic region would drop in unannounced to join the party. One of those was Guy Phillips from Greensboro NC by way of Chadds Ford PA driving a green, I think, TR3 with just room enough for himself and his guitar case. This was late ‘65 or early ‘66. He fit right in with the 16th St crowd, one of whom was the girl now known as Juice Newton. Yug had already been through a marriage and the Marines by this time. He started playing in the local clubs and liked it well enough to bring up some Greensboro friends to check it out, notably Emmylou Harris and Mike Williams - playing together as Emerald City - and a quirky harmonic player name Danny Flowers. Danny started picking up guitar in Virginia Beach and became a really good player. He was briefly a member of Guy’s band of a few years later and wrote one of the first songs they recorded. He also wrote the song on Emmy’s Pieces of the Sky album from which that title comes. He is best known for later writing Tulsa Time. Things always slowed down in Norfolk in the summer so we weren’t worried but when fall came it never picked back up. Group Nine got electric instruments, added bass, lead guitar and drums and started recording. In his businessman hat, Guy was a big help to us in getting the equipment we needed. Guy was working with a prolific songwriter, Benjamin Herndon, to form the band eventually known as the Oxpetals. A lot of people came and went in that group. Emmylou was in it for a time when her duo act split, I was in it when my group broke up, Danny Flowers and Juice Newton both spent some time in the group, and several others. We were all doing jingles at D’Arcy Studios in Norfolk to give our wallets a little padding. D’Arcy Studios later became

Studio Center, a huge recording operation that produces jingles and TV spots all over the country. Somewhere in their vaults they still have a tape with Juice Newton and Emmylou Harris both singing the praises of iced tea. This is getting on now into late ‘67 and early ‘68. Guy and Benjamin and I all had apartments in Roland Court -more commonly known then as Eden Alley - on 17th St. right off Atlantic Ave in Virginia Beach. There, the Oxpetals coalesced into their final form with the addition of Steve Pague (who now goes by Steven Michael Pague) and Bobby Webber and Dan Allison (Ace). Webber died a few years ago and Ace well before that. Webber spent time in Southport and some of the locals may have known him. They soon moved to New York
and then Moosepac Lake NJ. Our lives have remained entwined in various ways ever since.

FROM STEVE BOONE
Vocalist from Baltimore, MD. I met Yug in 1985, when I joined his band, The Rhythm Express. We had so much fun working together and for me it was such a wonderful musical experience. We performed at many clubs in Baltimore as well as private events. We remained friends and kept in touch with each other, even after the band ended. Yug was an unpretentious kinda guy, so what you saw was who he was! I, last saw Yug in 2012 with Dave Smith, our saxophonist and Barbra Grela, our manager. It is one of the highlights of the last few years of my life. And we last spoke on December 2, 2016. I am going to miss our conversations
“I’m sure that St. Peter will give him that sly smile of approval as he enters into eternal rest. My prayers go out to the family and friends of the best guitar player that I have ever had the pleasure of playing with. Rest in Peace Guy! Dale MacPherson ”
Florida, bassist for the Lovin’ Spoonful I met him in 1968 on Long Island along with several of his bandmates in a band The Oxpetals that were managed by Nat Weiss who partnered with Brian Epstein the Beatles manager. Yug and I became friends and musical buddies including me becoming the record producer for The Oxpetals. After the album was finished and turned into Mercury Records I said goodbye to the music biz and bought a sailboat and headed for the Caribbean. Yug would soon follow along with wife Lisa and along with several others we started a band in St Thomas called of all things “Wang Dang Doodle and Yug” Once back after several years in Caribbean. Yug and I partnered up again in converting a barge into a floating recording studio in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor in 1975 and we would remain musical and business partners thereafter. In 2009 We both began playing in an Irish Band at The Dubliner in Wilmington, NC. We constantly kicked ideas around for various musical ventures

FROM EMMYLOU HARRIS
Nashville TN, played and sang with Guy in the early days, friend for 50 years Guy was a big influence on my music in the beginning and throughout my entire career.
FROM REV (DANIEL GUETSCHOW)
Southport, NC guitarist / vocalist Guy and I met about 5 years ago, began playing as a duo, and immediately formed a bond. We had both been professionally performing music since we were teenagers, and had both played nationally. I, like Guy, have played with many very talented musicians. There are only a few that stand out, because they made playing magical. Guy Phillips is one of those few. I could throw any style at him and he always rose to the occasion. We could make up songs on the fly, instinctively knowing where we were taking it. He was a vocalist’s dream lead player, playing beautiful phrases at just the right time. We inspired one another to play at our highest
level. It has been my great joy and honor to work with him and we became close friends. Our last few “gigs” were in the hospital, entertaining the staff at Duke. He just couldn’t put the guitar down.
FROM CHRISTINE MARTINEZ
Southport musician and closest friend Christine Martinez was probably Guy’s closest and dearest friend here in Southport. She refers to him as family, but even more than that. They were often mistaken for a couple or sometimes father – daughter. They had a bond like no other, and hard for her to describe in words. Christine met guy almost twenty years ago – the same day she met her husband – where the two were in a band together. So their history goes back much further than when they formed their duo. After the birth of Christine’s second child, she decided to start singing and playing again. About 2008, she called up Guy and asked him to play with her. He jumped at the chance and she described it as “instant magic”. They had a connection and the local Southport music scene embraced their duo into the fold with open arms. “He absolutely influenced me musically”.
He would encourage her explore new sounds – like jazz and other unexpected tunes for a couple of acoustic guitars. He also encouraged her to write her own music, and he put his own special touch to that music, never to be duplicated or replaced. They brought the best out in each other. They soon added a couple more members – and the Christine Martinez Band was born. “Guy insisted that the band be named after the singer – but he was always the leader. Guy was the backbone and provided the structure of the music. He was not a natural born guitarist – he worked at it, he worked hard. And he expected everyone in the band to do the same. He’d let you know if you fell short of his expectations. He wasn’t afraid to let you know.” “Guy was a lot of things to so many, a son, a father, a friend… but most of all he was a guitar player – that’s who he was. He was loyal to the music and completely dedicated.” “He was strong – he played gigs right up until the end. The doctors said his music was one thing that kept him going so long. He was determined to NOT be defined by his disease. Even through pain – he played, we’d lock eyes and it was magical… every time.”
“Guy was a big influence on my music in the beginning and throughout my entire career.” Emilou Harris
“He was so much more than a band mate. He was a personal friend, I considered him family. He was always there for me. The struggle to go on without him musically is hard, but the personal loss of his friendship is much, much more than that.“ Guy grew up in Greensboro but spent his childhood vacations at his grandfather’s cottage on Holden Beach with his 15 cousins. In 1988, he decided to move back to this area, and settled on Oak Island. He loved the beach. In addition to playing music, he worked as a realtor for Margaret Rudd for several years. All of the people quoted above (and a few others) performed at the memorial celebration on February 11th. People came from all over the US, as far as Colorado, Nashville, and Arizona. Guy formed so many lifelong friendships and all 15 cousins were there, too! Although there is a hole in our hearts, may it be ever filled with his music and lasting influences on the music scene here locally and around the world!
Guy was family, he showed unconditional love. Our connection was magic, hard to define. He was also a paradox, a Republican Hippie, and was always that way.” Christine Martinez www.SouthportMag.com / APRIL 2017 / Southport Magazine 9

GUY’S OBITUARY:
Local musician Guy B. Phillips III, a.k.a. “Yug”, of Oak Island passed away on December 19, 2016. Guy was born on February 13, 1944, in Tampa, Florida. He was the son of the late Guy B. Phillips Jr. and Margaret Louise Anderson. Many weekends and vacations were spent with Guy Sr. and Annie Phillips in Chapel Hill with their 16 grandchildren. Guy’s fondest memories were from time he spent at Holden Beach, where Guy and Annie built the first oceanfront cottage. Guy described his youth a few years ago as “us Phillips cousins had something that a lot of kids don’t: we had each other; we didn’t grow up fast; we got to be kids; we had freedom to run around town, in the woods, and at the beach with no fears of anything negative.” I think we can all agree that his favorite parts of his childhood remained true for him his whole life. After years of pursuing his passion for music—from Greensboro to Virginia Beach to New York to Baltimore and the Caribbean—he settled in Brunswick County, specifically the Southport / Oak Island community. Here is where his guitar and unique persona became a masterpiece of friendships and affirmation. Guy is survived by his son, Craig Phillips and wife Robin of Baltimore; grandson Domonic Webster II and wife Karen and their children Riley and Domonic III. Guy is also survived by his sister, Pat Rucker and her husband Kirk, their daughter Lia and his grand-niece Sarah. And his beloved lab Sadie, is now living in Baltimore with her boyfriend Mac (Craig’s lab).

armer temperatures, flowers blooming and lots of sunshine mean spring is finally here, and it means most of us are ready to get outside and get moving. There is usually no shortage of festivals and events to choose from this time of year, and April’s calendar is no exception. There are plenty of good reasons to get out and about this month, whether you want to learn more about coastal ecosystems, stretch your legs with a brisk walk or a half marathon or stroll among Southport’s stately Live Oak trees shopping and picking out plants for your garden. And any time of year is a good time to lend a hand and help an organization dedicated to serving others. Make plans to participate in one – or all – of these events and enjoy spring on the Carolina coast!

OAK ISLAND’S EARTH DAY CELEBRATION April 21, Middleton Park in Oak Island
Oak Island Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring Earth Day events at Middleton Park on April 21st from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will feature handson environmental Earth-friendly activities and displays for all ages. School groups can take advantage of the chance to learn more about the environment in this unique hands-on event just steps from the Atlantic Ocean. Oak Island Parks and Recreation Director Rebecca Squires said Oak Island celebrates Earth Day just a little bit differently from everyone else. “We teach kids and citizens about the importance about preserving the Earth by recycling, reusing and preservation. But since we are a coastal community, we also teach about the importance of coastal issues,” she said. Those issues include preserving the dunes, sea turtle protection, responsible fishing, protecting sea bird habitats and more. Earth Day is also a chance to reach out to newcomers to the area, Squires said.
“Many Oak Island citizens are recent transplants to our area, so it’s important to educate them about coastal issues,” she said. “Since they have moved here, they too are stewards of our ecosystem.” Some of the groups in attendance will be the Ft. Fisher Aquarium outreach program, Beekeepers, Sea Biscuit Bird Rescue, NC Coastal Federation, and many more. If your group is interested in becoming a vendor or sponsor, or to find out more about the Earth Day celebration, call the Recreation Center at (910) 278-5518.

James Keelaghan—Folk Art Master Musician, poet, writer and artist shares his story STORY BY: JEFF STITES
A
s the calendar pages have turned, for almost a quarter of a century now, this poet laureate of the folk and roots music world has gone about his work with a combination of passion, intent, intensity, and curiosity. Fusing his insatiable appetite for finding the next unique storyline Keelaghan also forges his pieces with brilliantly defined craftsmanship and a monogrammed artistic vision, making him one of the most distinctive and readily identifiable voices of not only the Canadian scene, but as a member of the international singer-songwriter community. Armed with a songbook that has enlightened and enthralled, and been embraced, by audiences around the world, Keelaghan’s life as an artist is one that is a perpetual journey on so many levels. Most importantly it’s a journey that has
invited fans of literate and layered songwriting to be a part of his artistic expeditions, some that weave their way through marvelously etched stories of a historical nature with underlying universal themes, and others that mine the depths of the soul and the emotional trials of human relations. ¨His masterful storytelling, over the course of nine recordings, has been part of the bedrock of his success, earning Keelaghan his share of nominations and awards, and acclaim from Australia to Scandinavia. The necessity to write has always been a double-edged sword.” “I’ve always had the urge to write.
Some things weren’t being said in the way I wanted to say them. Then there are the different sides of what I write about. The narrative writing, the historical material, as well as the personal, where you have to take responsibility for what you are saying,” says the Calgary native who has been calling Winnipeg home for the past few years. A disciplined visionary, Keelaghan’s aces have long been a love of language, and history, as he earned a history degree years ago, his skills as a thespian that he acquired at an early age, that explain his ability to make an immediate connection with audiences in a live setting, and an ear
for a memorable melody, and harmonies that make those melodies glisten. “I’m good for 80 or so books a year, mostly history, non-fiction, but inspiration can come in many forms, I’m always on the lookout for a good story or idea. My sister told me the story that became Kiri’s Piano. It was such an image,” says Keelaghan that visits a dark chapter in Canadian history, Japanese internment camps in the Second World War.â’¨ â’¨Not only does his deep catalogue include timeless originals like Fires of Calais, Cold Missouri Waters, Jenny Bryce, Hillcrest Mine, and Kiri’s Piano. Keelaghan is also a possessive interpreter of outside material, a fine example being his gripping take on Gordon Lightfoot’s epic Canadian Railroad Trilogy on the Lightfoot Tribute disc Beautiful. There are a number of illustrations of his interpretive skills on his 2006 recording A Few Simple Verses. The closing tune on that spellbinding set, My Blood written with Jez Lowe, is one of many examples in Keelaghan’s career, where he has invited collaboration into his creative process. “I was at the Celtic Colors Festival in 2008 and the producers locked six of us in a house for a week, and the company included Dave Gunning, David Francey, and Rose Cousins, it was an amazing experience. We had to come up with enough material for a show at the end of it.“To go along with a lifelong accumulation of influences, there have been these opportunities to work with equals, whether if be Oliver Schroer, Hugh McMillan, or Oscar Lopez. The sparks of collaboration, batting melodies back and forth, whatever, have produced some wonderful results,” says the artist who ties it all together with a powerful voice, delivery, and a commanding presence where he finds a balance between examining the lighter and heavier sides of life. For Keelaghan staying at the top of his game comes down to a very clear rule, “never stop accumulating.” “I want my audiences to know that I am open enough to try new things and push their bounds.” It was Dave Marsh, the award-winning American music critic and historian who not so long ago stated that James Keelaghan is “Canada’s finest songwriter,” and those few but powerful words of praise say it all about an artist who continues to set the bar at a lofty height.

SHOWCASE alumni, I had done my alma mater proud. I bumped into someone I hadn’t seen since graduation. I knew that she was respected in her field, well travelled, successful. I asked what she had been doing since high school and she ran down the list of degrees and foreign postings and the like. She asked what I had been up to. I gave the condensed version. I was a writer and performer, I sang, played guitar. She nodded slowly up and down… “So, you are still doing what you were doing, when you were a teenager then?” Well, I guess, ya…sorta. I’m not playing as many stairwells now as I did back then, but it’s still pretty fun. She made it sound like I was in a rut. So just in case you think that all I do is play and sing… Since 2011, I’ve been the Artistic director of the Summerfolk Music and Crafts Festival in Owen Sound, Ontario. The job has given me a new passion for programming. I have to book the artists and program 6 daytime and two nighttime stages. The walls of my

I’m trying to stay at home more these days, as I have a couple of boys at home, aged 6 and 10. I want to spend as much time with them as I can before I become the enemy. If you know my music, you know that I love history. I studied at the University of Calgary, though I never actually completed my degree. I concentrated on the history of science, under the tutelage of the dear, departed Dr. Margaret Osler and was influenced and inspired by Dr. Shel Silverman, one of the great storytellers of our time. While I read a lot of history on a lot of different topics, my areas of specialty remain science and World War One, especially the battle of the frontiers, 1st Marne and Verdun.
For Keelaghan staying at the top of his game comes down to a very clear rule, “never stop accumulating.”

Nashville Roadshow Rolls into Town Down home country tunes that span the test of time STORY BY: JEFF STITES
D
o you miss the days when country and western music wasn’t just pop sung by a guy or gal with a twang? Would you love to revisit the days of Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, of Johnny Cash and Loretta Lynn, of Dolly Parton and Merle Haggard? Then Odell Williamson Auditorium has a show for you! The Classic Nashville Roadshow takes to the stage at Odell William Auditorium on the campus of Brunswick Community College on Thursday, April 27 bringing the best of country music’s bygone era to life. Jason Petty and Katie Deal, stars of The Classic Nashville Road Show, are two veterans of very successful Off-Broadway country music revues. Petty portrayed Hank Williams in Hank Williams Lost Highway, winning an Obie (the Off-Broadway version of a Tony Award) for his efforts. Deal starred in two sold out national tours of A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline.
The Classic Nashville Roadshow is more than just Hank and Patsy. Petty and Deal, backed by a robust five-piece band, portray all your favorite classic country stars in solos and duets. The show features hits like Harper Valley PTA, Coal Miner’s Daughter, On the Road Again and Momma Tried. The show’s stars have genuine country routes with Deal a native of Georgia and Petty hailing from Manchester, Tennessee, where he learned the classics from his grandmother Fannie Mayberry. Yes, Fannie Mayberry. You don’t get more country than that, do you?
The Classic Nashville Roadshow takes to the Odell Williamson stage at 7:30 pm and tickets are available in person at the Odell Williamson Box Office from 9 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Thursday and 9 am through 2:30 pm on Fridays. The box office also opens one hour and fifteen minutes prior to curtain on the day of the show.
Tickets are also available online at www. bccowa.com or by phone at 910-755-7416. This is a great opportunity to experience country music as it was from the 1950s through the 1970s, whether you are revisiting memories or hearing the tunes live for the first time. Y’all come on down, ya hear?

BIZ Q & A Your Next Home as Unique As SeaGlass From B&B Owners to Real Estate Owners, SeaGlass Realty is Here! STORY BY: LESLIE FOSTER
E
ach of us is uniquely and beautifully made and so it is with your home. Whether you find it on a tree-lined street in the historic district or oceanfront on Oak Island, SeaGlass Realty lists and sells homes all over our beautiful Cape Fear region. Linda Pukenas and Lisa Fosbury, Owners (and sisters ) of Sea Glass Realty have decades of combined experience in both real estate and marketing between them. Last Fall, they hung out their shingle in Southport, adding their expertise to our fast-growing real estate marketplace. The name chosen for their business is not accidental. The name conveys a coastal message to buyers and sellers alike, that like SeaGlass the process of buying and selling a home will be as special and unique as finding SeaGlass along the beautiful beaches of Brunswick County!
Q. When did SeaGlass Realty hang its “Open for Business” sign in SPT? After combining decades of real estate and marketing skills together, my twin sister, Lisa and I launched Sea Glass Realty in fall 2016. It is a family-owned, boutique firm with a focus on customized, quality real estate services. Our goal is not to be the largest but to be one of the best in a market with many good Realtor choices. Lisa (Fosbury) is a former real estate appraiser and was a leading broker in the Raleigh (Triangle, Raleigh, Cary, Durham, Wake Forest) market for over 15 years. Prior to that, she was in sales and markting in the pharmaceutical industry. Lisa has worked with countless buyers and sellers through the years and has experience in relocation (certified), buying & selling, broker market analysis and bank short sales & foreclosures. In the Raleigh/Triangle area, she worked with Remax United and most recently for many years with Coldwell Banker Advantage. She is also part owner of Captain Newton’s Inn on Moore Street in Southport. Lisa and her husband, Hugh have a daughter, Melissa (27) and son, James (24). I celebrated over 20 years of senior marketing positions with leading brands including Commerce Bank (now TD Bank), Harrahs’ Entertainment and GMAC Residential before landing in
Southport full time to own/operate the Robert Ruark Inn with my husband, Rick. I have had my real estate license for over 10 years and more recently hung my license with Margaret Rudd & Associates in Southport where I enjoyed working with the great folks there. My husband Rick (Pukenas) and I have many years of buying/selling/investing behind us as well. I’ve personally worked with 1031 Exchanges and land development in Cape May, NJ before moving to North Carolina in 2005.
Q. I’m a seller.... start to finish walk us through the steps you take from the first phone call to listing, to SOLD sign! It is important to process as much information from the first call so we can use it to evaluate the property’s primary and secondary markets before we meet in person or have the second call. After the first call, we will evaluate recent sales, current activity levels and current “competition.” A primary market/competitor is one that closely matches the property you are discussing. A secondary market/competitor may be a home that isn’t exactly like the property to sell but it fits within the price range and therefore is competing for “wallet share.” After the second discussion, we
Linda Pukenas and Lisa Fosbury, owners of SeaGlass Realty
should have the listing price, market positioning and be ready to process the listing documents. We then create and execute a final marketing plan that will include all tools (pictures, tours, marketing material, signage, etc.). Once listed, we keep in contact with the seller on a regular basis to let them know of showings, feedback and updates on the status of competing properties that could influence their sale. We re-evaluate as needed. Once an offer comes in, we commit to negotiating and maximizing results. We stay close through the settlement process and believe in 100% plus when it comes to communication. We believe in making the process easy for everyone. We also believe in helping our clients through the moving maze. Lisa has been a relocation specialist for years and knows all the ins and outs quite a bit. In addition to our previous experience,
we also both own bed and breakfasts in town which helps us know and appreciate all the local “go to” trades.
Q. In addition to the MLS how else do you Market a sellers home?
As with so many businesses today, the Internet is where most buyers see homes and often “meet” their future Realtor. Real Estate sites (that our County’s MLS links to include Zillow, Realtor.com and Trulia) showcase properties and are optimized for website searches. That is why it is so important to have a listing that best showcases a property. All our listings will have professional photos, 3D tours and aerial shots when applicable. We also believe in full, colorful marketing material that captures prospective buyers when they tour our listed homes. Marketing to other brokers/Re-

BIZ Q&A altors and neighbors can also be a useful tool in many instances. The Internet, signage, marketing to various SOBs (sources of business such as Realtors & neighbors), marketing material and good ‘ole networking (including showcasing open houses) are all very good tools. At the end of the day and most important in this market, however, is differentiating the property being sold. Lisa and I truly believe every property we list and sell is unique!
Q. SeaGlass is unique! Your tag line, “Every home is as unique as SeaGlass “ speaks to your business.... give our readers some examples of your “ uniqueness” in the competitive real estate business.
My background in strategic and creative marketing as well as successes in personal real estate investments helps me position listings appropriately for sellers and research and evaluate listings with buyers. Every real estate purchase or sale has to meet the objectives of the client. Although the main objective is to sell or buy property, there are always factors that drive decision-making more than others. It is also very unique and advantageous to have a
former appraiser on our team. Lisa’s appraising skills and experience in the luxury home market is invaluable. The majority of her market in Raleigh was in luxury home sales with most of her clients in the $1 million plus market. This helped land her in the Triangle’s Business Journal’s coveted “Book of Lists” with a ranking in the top 25 Realtors in the Raleigh/Durham market. She was a leading agent with Coldwell Banker/Advantage for many years. As a former appraiser, too, I do not know anyone who can price a home as well as she can. She not only uses sound appraisal factors but has a keen sense for intangibles within the market. Together we bring great insight on the most important factors for listing and selling homes and other type properties. We also bring a strong commitment to professionalism and ethical real estate practice to our roles.
Q. SPT is growing! (which we love) How do resale properties compare with new construction in the SPT area.?
As our tag line says, “Every Property is Unique!” With every property, it is good to do a simple SWOT analysis. It is important to sit down and put a plan together that spells out and addresses the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities & Threats (SWOT) of a property. It helps identify internal and external influences. For instance, a resale property in Indigo Plantation may be an older home but it benefits from a neighborhood with large treed lots, nice amenities like a pool & tennis courts and being close to downtown Southport and several marinas. Although the house may not be new, the location and the setting are strengths. If the house has been renovated, that is a strength, too. With every property purchase, there are always SWOTs.
Q.Describe your “ideal” client? We know they must exist!
Truly….”Every Buyer and Seller is Unique.” Ideally, however, everyone benefits from clients who are honest, straight-forward, reasonable and think of their Realtor as a partner in the process. This being said, however, selling and buying real estate is a very emotional process for most people. Sometimes there are ups and downs that get the better of the client. That is why we are here! Realtors are here to help their clients through these emotions as well as through the entire process.

Q. What trends are you seeing in our local real estate market?
Lifestyle Living! Although there are always first-time and move-up buyers, our market, as we all know, sees a lot of empty-nesters heading toward or into retirement. Buyers are looking for a quality of life
BIZ Q&A that keeps them active, sociable and in an area that nurtures them physically and emotionally. The Southport/Oak Island/Boiling Springs and entire Cape Fear Region offers buyers the opportunity to enjoy a naturally beautiful area with many opportunities for social and other meaningful endeavors. Proximity to the Coast, smaller (less than 2500 sq feet whether new or renovated) homes with lifestyle benefits is important. Lifestyle benefits can include being within walking/ biking distance to restaurants, shops and the waterfront (Downtown Southport) or a full amenity package that includes fitness centers, clubhouses, restaurants & golf courses, etc. (St. James, Winding River for example) or developments with some amenities like pools & a clubhouse (Indigo Plantation, Cades Cove, Arbor Creek, Rivermist, etc.) or areas with lakes like Boiling Springs or the Beach (Oak Island, Caswell, BHI). There are so many great neighborhoods and areas in which to choose.
Q. Is it true that kitchens and bathrooms sell houses?
Yes. In this market, we can also add outdoor living space, first floor master bedrooms and open floor plans. Kitchens and bathrooms are always tops in every market.
Q. Location. Location. Location! Which neighborhoods(OI, BSL, St James, SPT) are the most desirable?
We are seeing a lot of activity in all the areas right now. Again, it depends on the “Unique Buyer” as to what is most desirable. We see a lot of movement in homes priced $400,000 less with the majority under $300,000. Buyers generally like being close to the water whether in Southport, on one of the Islands, in Boiling Springs Lakes or when choosing a planned neighborhood. We have a lot of neighborhood communities such as Arbor Creek, St. James, etc. The size, age and ability to build new homes impacts the activity level. I think all areas and neighborhoods are in a good position for this upcoming market including higher priced custom homes and luxury estate homes.
Q. Historic properties are such an asset to our community. What are the pros and cons of selling these special homes?
This is my favorite question as I truly love every historic home whether totally restored or one that needs a lot of love. Rick and I have owned and restored numerous old homes and have loved every one. The pros: You can’t truly duplicate a historic home. You can’t duplicate or reinvent the history of the home or the role it played in developing a community. Historic homes are usually built to last with spe-
cial details and charm. A historic property needs to be loved, admired, respected and preserved to the best of the owner’s ability. Buyers should always (as with any house) get a home inspection (and survey) so they know what they are buying. They can then assess their threshold for any upgrades, maintenance, etc. The cons of a Historic home are sometimes immediately apparent; they often need restoration or at least renovation. Unless a historic home is completely restored, basic upkeep may be more than a new home. Historic homes are usually located closer to the waterfront thus also warranting a higher price tag. The types of materials used in historic homes can also increase the cost. A good option is also for a buyer to purchase a lot and built a home designed to look and feel like a historic home. There are several good local builders in our area who have been very successful achieving this for their clients.

The first time I ever got my hands dirty in clay, was in my sophomore year of high p school art class circa 1984. Everyone was t listening to Prince sing Purple Rain that c year, and my bangs added at least anoth- s er 4 inches to my height. I was raised in a a small Midwestern town surrounded by i cornfields in Illinois. My art teacher sat me o down at a pottery wheel with a pound of i a clay, and a potter was born. I have always been a very creative per- c son. Making art and performing music have m always occupied a place in my life. Even as a w
child, I liked to draw, and I always had paint underneath my fingernails. Then I started w singing in church as a teenager, and a whole s new creativity emerged. By age 16, I was o writing and recording my music in a studio. S I always knew that I would be a singer song- m writer and an artist. And I dreamt of going a e to college for art and music.
ART BEAT
Unfortunately, life took me in a different direction. My father died suddenly leaving my mother to raise 4 children alone. Money was tight and my plan to study Picasso in Chicago was no longer an option. In my early 20’s, I went to work as a certified nursing assistant and a Paramedic, and soon after I met my husband Michael. We married in 1998 and immediately uprooted from Illinois and moved to New Mexico. It was there where my love for creating art was rekindled, and I was blessed to take art and writing classes under the mesmerizing shadow of the Sandia Mountains. But I didn’t touch clay again until I moved to Southport in 2005. The familiar desire returned when I read an ad for pottery classes. I knew instantly when I walked into that pottery studio behind Franklin Square Gallery that I was home again. The smell of the clay, the kilns, the glaze buckets-everything about it took me home again. I immersed myself in clay and worked at the wheel every chance I could get. I joined the Associated Artists of Southport and quickly bought a used kiln from another potter. I received a grant from the Brunswick Art Council for my pottery wheel, and the rest is history. I now have my own studio set up in our home, and teach and mentor others on a regular basis.
There is nothing easy about making pottery on a wheel even though potters tend to make it look like a breeze. It’s a connection we get from practice, pure and simple. There is something about holding a clump of clay and focusing on forming it into something useful. I put everything else out of my mind and mold the clay into being. Even when my life seems to be running amuck, just a moment at the wheel and I can think clearer and I’m pulled back into my center. It’s like talking to an old friend when no one else understands. My favorite part of making pottery is wheelwork, but I am also drawn to pottery surface decorations and glazing. Raku and other alternative firing methods such as Saggar and pit firing have always interested me because of how intense the processes are. You have to be right there to watch and encourage the firing to mature, and then
stop the process before it is ruined. Firing this way takes focus, patience and a desire to learn. You can’t just turn on the kiln and walk away. It’s not for the faint of heart as many times the pot is ruined in the volatile firing environment. But nothing feels better than pulling a pot out of the ashes of a pit firing and seeing that the smoke and flames
have made a masterpiece. I try to keep my work fresh so that my art is always evolving and fluid. A couple years ago, I felt that my work had become stagnate and I needed a change. I have now started sketching on my pottery and focusing more on improving the quality of my work. Sqraffito is one form of decoration I use that is made by scratching through a surface to reveal a lower layer of a contrasting color. I sketch my subject before I apply it to a pot. Then after brushing on an underglaze, I carve out my drawings. I have found this method most rewarding because it pairs my love for pottery and drawing in one medium. With my art continually evolving, I am grateful to be living in such a creative place where I can keep growing, and where all levels of artists reside. It’s not just the professional artists living here, but also the emerging artists who are finding their place. We are not just drawn here by the mild weather, but also by the natural beauty and constant inspiration that we enjoy with the different bodies of water and the Southern landscape that surrounds us. It’s a perfect combination for the creative soul, and I’m grateful to be part of the mix. You can find Carla’s work displayed in The Franklin Square Gallery and The Celtic Heart. KITCHEN Shelton Farms in Leland is one of those places. The owner, Margaret Shelton, said that the edible flowers they carry include Pansies, Violas, Nasturtium, Begonias, Violets, Tasmanian Violets, Rosemary, Calendula and more (depending on the season). I talked to my friend Tania – an expert on the subject and she was excited to share her personal edible flower knowledge with me. She said, “I use organic culinary rose petals and lavender for dishes and cocktails.” Photo: thedish.plated.com

Their staff are very knowledgeable and welcoming, especially Margaret Shelton.” Tania tells more about her fun dinner parties – accompanied by edible flowers. “My neighbors and I have started a monthly dinner party and January was our month to host. Winters on the Southern coast can be a bit gloomy and so my husband Gordon and I wanted to provide a warm and nurturing environment. After we decided on this theme we knew immediately to start at Shelton Herb Farm. We’ve been going there for years and with each trip we are charmed anew. We purchased edible flowers and an assortment of fresh culinary herbs. Among the many edible flowers represented in our basket were pansies, which are symbolic of loving thoughts. The colors are brilliant and we used them

recent encounter at a dinner party inspired to me write this article. While helping the host prepare a cheese platter, I was given a bag of fresh flowers—needless to say I was a little confused. The bag had a variety of colorful petals, flowers and buds. These were not only for decoration, but for eating! They were so beautiful and actually looked delicious, I couldn’t wait to try them. Before you go pull off your pansy petals for a dinner party – please note that ONLY organic and pesticide-free flowers should be eaten. If you grow them in your own garden from seeds, they should be ok. But you may even want to check if your neighbors are using pesticide spray, or weed

killer, because it can run in the soil and effect your garden without you knowing. Eckhart Tolle described flowers as a source to enlightenment in his book “A New Earth”. According to Tolle, “ Flowers Have an awakening power—those delicate and fragrant beings we call flowers would come to play an essential part in the evolution of consciousness of humans. Humans would increasingly be drawn to and fascinated by flowers. As the consciousness of human beings developed, flowers were most likely the first thing they came to value which had no utilitarian purpose for them, that is to say, was not linked in some way to survival. They provided inspiration to countless artists, poets, and mystics.” There are only a few places to purchase edible flowers, organic and safe to eat.

Shelton Herb Farm provides such generous quantities of their fresh products that we had enough flowers and herbs to share with our guests at the end of the evening. I had the pleasure to be included in this dinner party, and it has inspired me now to enjoy edible flowers in my own home made recipes. HOMESTYLE “ Perfectly situated under a canopy of oak trees. They provide shelter from the storms, shade from the sun and home to hundreds of birds. “
If you’re a history buff, you’re going to love this. The tiered water fountain out back was purchased at auction from the Dudley Mansion (Governor Edward Dudley) in Wilmington. Dudley was the state’s first elected Governor in 1845. The fountain was taken apart to transport to Southport and then reassembled in the rear yard. It’s one of Gay’s favorite purchases, but unfortunately she will not be able to take it with her. Lucky for the new buyer – it comes with the house.
Contemporary Water Front Gem Frank Lloyd Wright Inspired Masterpiece on the Cape Fear River STORY BY: AMI BROWN

f you’ve ever wanted a unique water front dream home… here’s your chance. This one-of-a-kind contemporary home sits nestled under a canopy of oak trees, on an acre lot with a huge back yard that runs all the way down to the River. You can watch the sunset from your private screened in gazebo attached to the rear deck, or watch the regattas from your Juliette master balcony. It’s the good life in abundance, right here in Southport. I’d say it’s the perfect place to retire, or raise a family.
This Frank Lloyd Wright-Inspired floorplan home was built by the Angermyer family in 1988. The current owners – the Siddens purchased it from them in 2004, and they have loved living here in Southport for the past 13 years. Original for Virginia, they are anxious to move back to their roots in the mountains they call home. This amazing property, 232 River
Drive is for sale, and some lucky buyer is going to snag this one in no time. The large den boasts floor to ceiling architectural windows that let in gorgeous light and provide panoramic water views from almost every room in the house. Homeowner, Gay Sidden, loves to read, play the piano or chill out by the fireplace in this – her favorite room in the house. The
downstairs also has a huge guest 2nd and 3rd bedroom and bath. Although the master is currently upstairs, either of these could easily be turned into a master suite if new owners wanted a first floor master. There is even a large additional room that could be a 4th bedroom, office, storage or workout space.

HOMESTYLE HOMESTYLE Another historical tidbit, there is a Civil War Berm (a raised area between trenches) that runs along the property. Several Civil War cannon balls have been unearthed here as well. This house sits on a treasure of local history and would probably make a great place to get out the old metal detector. The kitchen has been lovingly remodeled and provides all the modern conveniences with quality finishes. Plantation shutters and solar shades adorn the over-sized windows. You can look out over the quarantine station and see both light houses from the deck or balcony. The gardens are lush green with the in-ground sprinkler system at work. There are gorgeous blooms, oak trees and warm nights to enjoy sitting in the screened in gazebo. No more mosquitos or harmful sun rays to dampen the mood. home, no need to fight the crowds or traffic. The Christmas Flotilla parades and turns around just in front of your property to give you the perfect view without leaving the comfort of your warm place by the fire. “It’s really the
best of everything.” Gay reminds me. The staircase is extra wide and can even accommodate a future elevator if needed. There is an abundance of storage and the layout is well thought out. Having been in Real Estate and
Construction for over 30 years, the Siddens pride themselves on the immaculate upkeep of the home. They really love this house and have looked after it like part of the family.

HOMESTYLE HOMESTYLE The huge oak trees provide shelter from the storms, shade from the sun and a home to a myriad of birds. Gay loves her birds. She hopes the new owners will continue to feed them as well. There are families of woodpeckers, blue birds, blue jays, sparrows, cardinals, hawks and many many more. The Siddens have lived in Virginia, Georgia, South Carolina and Wisconsin – and Gay admits that Southport is by far the loveliest town they have ever lived in. The interior has a fresh coat of paint, the owners are motivated to sell, and are looking for that perfect buyer for this unique modern home. Southport Realty is proud to present the sale of this unique contemporary riverfront luxury home. Come and sit on the back deck or screened in gazebo and watch the mighty ships quietly steam by carrying cargo all over the world, yachts, and an assortment of fishing vessels. This home, remodeled in 2016, has 3728 square feet with 3 bedrooms and 3 baths, large living room and a cozy den each with a Mendota direct vent gas fireplace and water views galore. The home sits on almost an acre of bulk headed lot on the Cape Fear River and the Intracoastal Waterway. The kitchen has a sub zero refrigerator wine cooler, Bosch dishwasher, Dacor oven, warming drawer, microwave/ convection oven, Wolf glass cook top, custom cherry cabinets with above and below lighting, pantry with pull out drawers and dumbwaiter. There are hardwood floors in the upper living area and parquet flooring downstairs with the bathrooms boasting beautiful marble floors and counters. The large master bedroom has a walk in closet and room darkening shades. The master bathroom has a tile shower, towel warming drawer and his and hers basins. Outside accent lighting shows off the meticulously landscaped yard with several mighty oaks and of course the Cape Fear River. Permit for a dock is permitted by CAMA . The rear yard is more than ample to add a swimming pool as well. Some furniture is negotiable with the sale.

“One of my favorite things is of course the water views. Also, the phenominal sunrises and I love watching the ships come in. My favorite spots are the screened gazebo and the cozy den, where I have my books, my piano and fireplace.“

A Big Pain in the Foot! What exactly is Plantar Fasciitis and what can you do? STORY BY: LESLIE RES CHLY, BSN, RN

Along the bottom of each of your feet is a layer of tissue called fascia that provides support to the arch of your foot and connects the toe area to your heel. This is known as the plantar fascia. Any strain or inflammation of this area causes discomfort along your heel or the bottom of your foot especially when walking. Common to the 40-60 year old age group, this stabbing pain increases with your first steps but then may get better as you move around prior to returning later in your day or especially after exercise. Repeated strain to this area causes tiny tears in the fascia that swell or inflame causing the discomfort. The following are identified risk factors for plantar fasciitis: • High arches or flat feet or feet which roll in • Walking, standing or running on hard surfaces for prolonged periodsespecially in certain occupations • Being overweight which puts added strain on the area • Wearing high heels or going barefoot on hard surfaces • Wearing worn out, poor fitting shoes including athletic shoes • Tight muscles in your calves or along your Achilles tendon in the back of your lower leg • High impact sports involving running, ballet or aerobic dance
While I encountered plantar fasciitis as a result of going barefoot and wearing flimsy flip flops for an extended period, some people have no idea what first started their symptoms. Since prolonged pain with walking can actually change the way you ambulate and put stress on other joints such as knees, hips and ankles, prompt recognition and treatment may help prevent a chronic condition from developing. Initial treatment is simple…get off your feet! Ice applications for 15-20 minutes three to four times per day may give immediate relief to the inflammation. If your health status allows, use of NSAID medications such as Ibuprofen or Naprosyn may improve the situation. Calf stretching may also help with lengthening your lower leg muscles. If initial treatment does not change your symptoms, seek prompt medical advice from your healthcare provider. You may be referred to a specialist such a Podiatrist or Orthopedic physician. In addition, you may be sent to Physical Therapy if needed and they will be able to teach you specific stretching exercises for your legs. Special shoes or orthotic devices can assist (orthotics may be recommended in both shoes even if only one foot hurts). Typically, splints are often used at night to keep your toes flexed toward your leg and stretch your calf leg muscles as you sleep. Reflexology is another non-invasive option you may try for relief of your symptoms. If your condition continues to worsen despite conservative treatment, there are other

more invasive options to consider. Steroid injections may be given to provide temporary pain relief but cannot be repeated frequently as they may weaken the tissue. Surgical intervention to detach the fascia from the bone is a last resort and may leave you with potentially worse consequences. Newer and more conservative treatment involves the use of cold laser therapy. Local podiatrist, Dr. Joseph Kibler DPM, FACFAS, currently uses the MLS “Cutting Edge” laser in his office in Supply, NC to treat plantar fasciitis as well as other conditions. Use of this MLS (Multiwave Locked System) Therapy uses light energy of two wave lengths to stimulate the body’s natural healing process at the cellular level. The laser treats pain, inflammation and edema promoting pain relief with its rapid effects. Dr. Kibler notes that stimulation of the pain receptors on the nerves can temporarily block the pain for 30 minutes to hours AND becomes additive with subsequent treatments therefore providing
greater pain relief while decreasing the swelling and promoting the healing of the fascia. Plus, Kibler reports this cold laser is not painful during use. Frequently, Kibler is able to effectively treat a person who has an acute plantar fasciitis of duration around 1 week with 6 sessions but stated that chronic plantar fasciitis may require as many as 10-12 sessions over a 3-4 week period. Please contact InStride-Brunswick Foot & Ankle Surgery for a consultation. (See info at the end of this article) Insurance does not typically cover this procedure. Despite the use of treatment, plantar fasciitis may take a few months to a year to resolve. During this time, it is important to stick with your treatment plan. In addition, for your health, continue to exercise altering your physical activity to a low impact sport such as biking or swimming. Avoid situations causing prolonged standing or running on hard surfaces and replace worn out athletic shoes!
