The 2018 Maggie Reader Survey Reveals our Local Winners! STORY BY KRIS BEASLEY
I
t is with great pleasure that we unveil and announce the winners of the 2018 Southport Magazine Maggie Awards! 2018 marks the fourth year of the Southport Magazine Maggies.
The goal each year is to recognize those within our community who are doing an exceptional job. We try hard to ask different questions each year, so that the Maggie Awards will remain interesting and engaging. We want anyone out there doing an exceptional job to be recognized with a Maggie Award. This year, we cut the amount of questions down by half, due to feedback from the readers. It seems that no one wants to spend too much time navigating through a lengthy survey, understandably. We also added a “write in” category, where readers could express in their own words, who they thought should win a Maggie and why. This year, Mo Meehan of Lantana’s Gallery & Fine Gifts won the Reader’s Choice Maggie Award. She received the most write in ballots about her and her business. Here are
just a few of the comments our readers shared: -Mo at Lantana’s - Always cheerful and helpful in finding just the right purchase. A pleasure to do business with this family owned company. -Lantana’s - they always have amazing service and help you in any way they can! I love the art and people there! -Mo Meehan at Lantana’s Gallery relocated two years ago to manage the family business. She has reached out to meet everybody in town and continue the high quality of Lantana’s Gallery. She is positive and reflects the values of a great retail experience in Southport. -Lantana’s - Great selection, service and refreshments on 1st Fridays. -Lantana’s - Mo Meehan - great business, variety of art and gifts for everyone.

S
outhport’s annual Easter egg hunt at 10 a.m. in Franklin Square Park offers a fun challenge for ages 6-12 with plenty of clever hiding places. Following, the Easter egg hunt for children 5 and under will be on the Fort Johnston Garrison lawn. A thousand plastic eggs filled with goodies will be scattered across the lawn for the delight of the younger children. Events are free. Sponsored by the City of Southport Department of Parks and Recreation.
he 2nd Annual Southport Day of Service highlights Southport’s selfless volunteer spirit. This year, the City is partnering with Trinity United Methodist Church and hoping for a fantastic turnout. Southport citizens have a lot of pride in their town, and with an all-out community effort, the possibilities for success are limitless. The Citywide event begins 7:15 a.m. at Murrow Hall, Trinity United Methodist Church. Breakfast, beverages and a luncheon will be offered to all helpers. BIZ Q&A Spring Into All In Bloom Local garden center brings the blooms all year BY KASS FINCHER
B
usiness partners Kim Everhart and Tina York live in Oak Island and operate All In Bloom Garden Center and Landscapes on Howe Street downtown in Southport. They visited with me recently during the winter break and talked about their plans for 2018. YOU JUST OPENED IN SEPTEMBER LAST YEAR; HOW ARE THINGS GOING? “Wonderful, we have been very blessed, we really have! Southport and Oak Island have been very good to us. We’ve found a niche here and it seems to be working really well for us. We each have our strengths and we complement each other. Kim runs the landscaping side; Tina runs the retail side.” IS THIS A NEW VENTURE FOR YOU OR HAVE YOU BEEN IN THIS BUSINESS IN THE PAST? “We’ve been in the garden center business for awhile. We moved here five years ago from Asheboro. Once here, we worked for Bridgers Garden Center. After they closed, Kim went to manage a local garden center here and worked there for about three seasons. Tina worked for several farmers’ markets – including Maters and Taters and Summerlin Farms. This past year, we just figured it was as good a time as any to take that leap of faith and go for it, and we’ve been very blessed.” WHAT’S DIFFERENT ABOUT YOUR PAST EXPERIENCES AND WHAT YOU’RE OFFERING HERE NOW? “We learned from those past experiences and now we bring our knowledge to this. You can come here with questions and we’ll give you answers. We really try to focus on customer service and teaching our customers the best plans for their garden, lawn maintenance, whatever they need.”
AND THAT KNOWLEDGE CREATES LOYALTY WITH YOUR CUSTOMERS, I WOULD THINK?
“Yes we think so. We’re developing a very loyal customer base. And we appreciate that so much. We can’t compete with the box stores on price but what we can give you is a better product, knowledge, and really, really good customer service.” WHAT IS YOUR SERVICE AREA? “We’ll go as far as Leland, Shallotte, Ocean Isle. We do business in Bald Head too. We like to go wherever our clients need us.”
I SEE YOUR SIGNS ALL OVER TOWN. IS LANDSCAPING A BIG PART OF WHAT YOU DO? “Yes, it’s a large part and we’ve been very blessed on that aspect too. We had several jobs in January and February, and it’s really unheard of in the landscaping industry to be working in the wintertime. We do all aspects of landscaping – from design to installation and maintaining those properties too.” So what would you say are your primary products and services? “Landscaping is at least half of what we do. Of course we’ve not been here a year yet. We have nothing to gauge by except our pumpkin patch last fall. If our pumpkin patch is any indication of what our spring is going to be like, we’ll be killing it. Tina will need more than four staff here to help out. The pumpkin patch was phenomenal – we sold over 3000 pumpkins. It was so much fun – the kids and even the adults got excited. Everybody loves fall and the pumpkins.” HOW MANY STAFF WORK WITH YOU? “We have a landscaping crew of five men. Tina will have a staff of four working at the retail store. We had just returned from a gift mart trade show in Atlanta, and we have lots of new garden and yard art items for the store – unique things you won’t find anywhere else.
HOW DO YOU THINK THE COLD WEATHER WE HAD THIS YEAR WILL AFFECT YOUR BUSINESS?
“Our bitter cold snaps were tough. People will probably lose some plants and have to replant. On the Lantana, you should check on what variety it is. If it’s the New Gold or Chapel Hill variety, you might get it back. But the only true Lantana perennial is Miss Huff – even with this bitter weather, though, it might have gotten hurt.”
WHAT PLANTS WILL YOU OFFER IN THE SPRING?
“The whole lot will be covered – annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees. We’ll have a lot of native plants too. We’re a full service garden center – and lots of unique yard art that nobody else here will have.” What challenges have you run into so far?
24 Southport Magazine / MARCH 2018 / www.SouthportMag.com
“Actually, running out of space is a challenge. We want to do so much. We do have a good amount of space outside but we’re limited inside. Finding good help is a challenge too – every small business is challenged with finding good, dependable help. Any people with plant knowledge out there, please come to see us!” DO YOU HAVE ANY FUNNY STORIES, THINGS THAT HAVE GONE AWRY? “Moving this building here was kind of crazy. It was a prefab, empty shell built to our specifications by Leonard Utility Buildings in Wilmington. They brought it down on a truck in August; the truck got stuck up out out here on the lot maybe four or five times. What they thought was going to take about an hour took about half a day to finally get this building in place. The building was precariously hanging halfway on the truck and halfway off; we didn’t know how we were going to do this. We laugh about it now – but it wasn’t so funny then.” THE BEADED WOOD ON THE WALLS AND CEILING INSIDE THE STORE IS UNIQUE. WHERE DID YOU GET THAT? “It’s from an old house in Castle Hayne that was built in the late 1800s. The lady lived there until she was over 100 years old. A friend of mine – the owner of North Carolina Plantation Antiques – found it for us. The different colors are because the wood came from different rooms – her den, her bedroom, her kitchen. And the wood on the floor is from a tobacco barn in Surry County.”
WHAT WAS YOUR VISION IN CREATING THE INTERIOR SPACE?
“We wanted people to walk into the store and not notice how small the building is, but to say, ‘Oh my God this is very cool.’ It’s nice to reclaim things and find new uses for them that add a creative touch.” WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS ON PLANT OFFERINGS – DO YOU PLAN TO OFFER ANYTHING DIFFERENT FROM OTHERS? “Our main thing is to have plants out here that will do well in our coastal environment.
We try to focus on what the customer is going to buy that he or she can take home and not worry about it – something that will really thrive for them. We both know what works in our climate and what doesn’t. There are a lot of elements here that people don’t even think of – salt air, wind, sand. The humidity here is rough on plants. We used to have customers come to us at the other garden center and say ‘I want a lilac bush.’ And I would always tell them that they just won’t make it here because of the humidity. The heat won’t hurt them – it’s the humidity that does it. Same thing with peonies – people want them all the time; they don’t do well here, they struggle.”
WHAT ARE THE BEST PLANTS YOU WOULD RECOMMEND IN YOUR DESIGNS? “There are a lot of plants that do well here. Everybody loves hydrangeas – they do well with the right varieties. They’re nostalgic favorites, reminding us of grandma’s garden. Of course the drift roses and knock-outs also do fantastic here, while standard roses cannot – they get disease ridden. We’ll have tons of perennials that will do well here, and evergreens as well. It’s important when you do a design to consider all the seasons. When we go in and design a landscape, we know you have to do more than just put in that ‘wow factor,’ because in the wintertime the customer will have nothing. You’ve got to do a mix with evergreens too.”
WHAT PLANS DO YOU HAVE TO ENHANCE YOUR BUSINESS? “We are still very new. We want to build relationships with realtors and builders for referrals this spring. We’re very excited about our potential – we have great visibility and we hope to stay here quite awhile.” It’s clear that Kim and Tina are committed and know their stuff – I’m sure they are here to stay. The pumpkin patch was just the beginning. All In Bloom will bring their creative touch to our area and make Southport and surrounding area gardens even more beautiful.

CHEERS Guinness Review
Favorite Irish beer recommended any time of the year STORY BY JEFF STITES
I
t’s St. Patrick’s Day Month and I’m writing about Guinness. Sorry, but if you don’t understand why and completely agree, you might as well stop reading now.
This is as much a love letter as a review. I’m a huge Guinness fan. If you aren’t yet, give it a try. Don’t be afraid of the color, beer isn’t supposed to be transparent. And don’t assume that because it’s dark it’s “heavy.” In truth, Guinness Draught (and it’s pronounced “draft” by the way), is one of the lightest beers you’ll find. It has an alcohol content similar to American mass-produced light beers like Miller, Bud and Coors, it has fewer calories than even most “light” beers, and it is actually so truly light that it will float atop about any other liquid, from other beers to even Champagne. That’s called a Velvet Hammer, by the way, and I don’t recommend it. For years Guinness used “Guinness Is Good For You” as a company slogan, and while that can’t be scientifically proven, I hardily believe it. Anyhow, since Guinness is Irish and we all like to think of ourselves as Irish this time of year, let’s dive into the Guinness goodness.
GUINNESS DRAUGHT STOUT 4.2% ABV
The Label Says: Upon opening, the famous round plastic widget in every can unleashes nitrogen through the beer, creating the creamy head and iconic surge that’s distinctly Guinness. My Take: What follows that label blurb is detailed instructions on how to pour your Guinness Draught correctly. Pay attention and whatever you do, don’t drink this from the can like a savage. We are civilized folk, remember. This is the Guinness folk’s best attempt at recreating their pride and joy….the draught Guinness pint. It isn’t perfect. I can’t put my finger on why but it just doesn’t quite measure up to Guinness poured from a proper tap in a proper pub. But until I install a proper pub in my house, and mark my words, someday I will, this is a very passable substitute.
GUINNESS ORIGINAL 4.2% ABV
The Label Says: Guinness Original is inspired by Arthur Guinness’ original stout recipe, first introduced in Dublin around 1800 as a premium porter. Still sold today in the UK and now available in the United States, this brew delivers a rounded flavor of bitter and sweet with a dry finish. My Take: At only 4.2% abv, this is pretty much in line with your big American light beers, but it tastes oh so much better. This is perfect for social situations where you need to stay on your game, for nights where you plan to drink more than a few beers, or just about any other time. It doesn’t pack the powerful flavors of some of the beers to follow, but it is malty with balanced bitterness and sweetness and it tasted the way Arthur Guinness intended, which means quite a bit. It’s also a great choice for cooking as it makes a fine addition to soups and stews.
GUINNESS FOREIGN EXTRA STOUT 7.5% ABV
The Label Says: Foreign Extra Stout is brewed with generous hops and roasted barley for a full-flavored taste of dark chocolate, dried fruits and caramel. Originally developed for global export from Ireland, the addition of extra hops ensured this stout would always arrive in perfect condition. My Take: This is one of the heartiest of the Guinness Family of beers. As the brewer’s description mentioned, this beer was made to ship all over the world at time when sailing ships and voyages were often measured in weeks. Both the roasted malt that gives the beer its very dark color and the addition of extra hops serve to mask the degradation of the beer that can happen under extended time in the tropical heat. As an aside, this is where the term IPA comes from as well. IPA is an abbreviation
of India Pale Ale which was the English Pale Ale shipped to the British colony of India. It was hopped more than the domestic version for the same reasons as the Guinness export. But what this leaves us, in the much more climate controlled and fossil fuel-powered 21st century, is a beer that is chock full of all the deliciousness that makes beer great. It’s got hops, like the IPAs, but the malt isn’t overpowered by the bitterness. Rather everything is in perfect balance. Granted, it’s not what most would choose after a sweaty afternoon mowing the lawn, but as beers go, this one is hard to beat.
GUINNESS 200TH ANNIVERSARY EXPORT STOUT 6% ABV
The Label Says: This year marks the 200th anniversary of the first Guinness export from Ireland to the U.S. To commemorate this momentous occasion we brewed this beer, inspired by entries from our 1817 brewing logs. In 1817 Guinness was using Black Patent malt to give its stouts their deep dark black color. This new brew is complex and smooth with balance of roast and sweet chocolate malt. My Take: Just as dark (if not even darker) but sweeter and with a lower alcohol content than the Guinness Export, this special edition brew is almost as perfect. At only 6% abv, this one is the perfect after lawn mowing beer.
this same special stout from Ireland into Belgium through the vibrant port of Antwerp. This is the first time we’re making it available for general release in America. My Take: First of all, this is the most fun beer name to say ever in the history of beer names. Antwerpen. Go ahead, say it out loud. Antwerpen. It’s awesome isn’t it? Now wait til you try this beer. Be forewarned, though, this isn’t a beer for amateurs or new beer drinkers or those who consider Bud Light to be beer. Antwerpen is, to sound a bit beer snobby for a minute, very complex. It doesn’t so much blend flavors as just send all of them packing onto your tongue at one to fight it out. And the brewery’s description is correct, the finish lasts forever. And I’m still a bit sad when it’s over.
GUINNESS ANTWERPEN STOUT 8% ABV
The Label Says: This 8% ABV stout has long been a secret pleasure among beer connoisseurs and indeed our own brewers, who value the mouth-watering intensity of roasted malt, smoked wood and dark chocolate notes, not to mention its excellent and seemingly endless finish. Since 1944 we have been exclusively exporting

ART BEAT Naturally Artistic Missy Tripp Ronquillo wins Maggie Favorite Local Artist! STORY BY: CAR L A E DST RO M
“My art is my life,” says local artist Missy Tripp Ronquillo and
owner of Pescado Y Amor paint studio and gallery on Oak Island. “I pretty much am creating from the time I wake up in the morning until I fall asleep. It is what I do.” Her non-stop creativity is evident with her paintings and other fabulous creations adorning her studio from floor to ceiling. From large acrylic sea life paintings to recycled and up-scaled glass windows, Ronquillo’s art encompasses a wide range of mediums to showcase her immense creative talents. She has an infectious passion for art and vibrant enthusiasm for life that is apparent in her work. Her positive nature is motivating and challenging to me as an artist myself to keep creating and growing. “I always knew I wanted to be an artist of some sort,” said Ronquillo.
She started her art schooling at the Corcoran School of Art and Design in Washington DC and then transferred to Virginia Commonwealth University In Richmond, VA where she received her B.F.A In Painting. She earned her Masters in Fine Art at Savannah College of Art & Design. Ronquillo says that her biggest influence for her art is her grandfather Irving Tripp, who was an American comic book artist best known as the illustrator of Little Lulu comics. A native of NC being born in Raleigh, Ronquillo is happy to be back by the beach and closer to family on the East Coast. Being brought up in a military family, she lived all over the US, Europe and Mexico. Her art definitely showcases her experiences of travel and living in Mexico with her use of bright festive colors and bold lines. She explained that living in the Southport area is “the longest I have lived anywhere in my whole Life. It is now my home.” And we are happy to have her! Knowing that she always wanted to have her own art space that she could call her own, she and her husband opened a studio where Ronquillo could teach students and also work on her own art. “My husband, Ron and I started Pescado Y Amor on a warm summer day in 2009 while living in Sayultia, Mexico. We moved to Oak Island the same year and slowly progressed into this fabulous art studio,” says Ronquillo. “We started the business in Mexico where it was of a gathering or artists that would get together and start painting.” But it didn’t stop at being an art studio for artists. Ronquillo’s talent for teaching would come into play when others who were not painters would want to learn, and so she helped them along. “We really fell into the painting process,” she explained. “We started our business with the love of art and making art and living at the beach. Ever since graduating from school I have been teaching painting in some form so it
makes sense that it slowly has transformed into a teaching space, and my studio space where you find me working most days of the week ... as well as my gallery.” With classes several times a week, there is a class for everyone including paint your own pet portraits, and painting while you do yoga. Whether it’s a class for adults where they can bring their own beverages and have a party, to toddler and after school classes for kids. Dream catchers, painted pillows and other textile work all add to the creativity of her classes. She also offers cut out wooden sea life creatures for painting like pelicans and whales. There are even classes using recycled and tumbled glass and resin. Ronquillo strives to have this art experience be fun and memorable for her students. When she teaches painting, she will sketch out the drawing that the class is doing for each student, but then encourages her students to look outside of the box and add different dimensions to their creations, making their work of art personal and their own. It will be an exciting time this spring at Pescado Y Amor as they are going to be organizing the studio so that they can offer some open studio hours for people to work on their own projects outside of classes. According to Ronquillo, “People can just walk in and work on something or create something new.” She hopes this will be good for locals and tourists alike who want a place to create. Although the classes take up a lot of her time, Ronquillo still manages to do commission work and get out of the studio for other projects such as painting live events as they happens. “It takes me out of the studio and makes the art of interacting part of the painting,” she said. “Custom
Southport Magazine 2016-2017 SOI Chamber Small Business of the Year Winner
paintings are a big part of my business as an artist,” she said. “I have painted murals or custom artwork for homes and businesses all over the United States and Mexico.” Living on the beach influences her work as most of it is beach related, but she also has non-beach work such as a series that focuses on the human body. “Creating this studio on Oak Island has definitely made me push myself and keeps me trying to find new ways to keep people interested in my art. I guess I feel more like an artist at this point in my life than I ever have,” she said. Ronquillo lives on Oak Island with her husband Ron, her dog Sabby and cat Panny. To commission her for work or take a class, you can reach her by email pescadoyamor@att.net and through her website http://www.pescadoyamor.com/.
