LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

A New Year… A New Editor

Spring, just around the corner and quickly approaching; a symbol of new life and celebration of beginnings. Hopefully the cold spells are almost over and the warm sun stays with us for an extended season once again. The flowers will be budding soon and the bird life will once again delight our ears at the crack of dawn. Over the past few years Southport Magazine has gone through several transformations, but always staying true to their mission at hand - serving the local community. When Kris asked me to consider the newly vacant editor position, I had no hesitation taking on the challenge. I believe 100% in this Magazine and can’t wait to see how it blossoms. This February issue celebrates love, romance and relationships. As the month that gives us Valentine’s Day it seems fitting and definitely a reader favorite. I hope you enjoy this LOVE themed issue and connect with your loved ones – near and far - every chance you get. I am honored and delighted to step into the role of Editor for Southport Magazine. Being a part of this small community, I am excited to showcase the local culture, art, music, activities and interesting personal stories through the magazine. And as always, if you – the reader have any suggestions, comments or questions feel free to send them my way. Email: editor@southportmag.com. I’m looking forward to a wonderful 2017… and beyond. — Ami Brown

ON THE COVER Source: Kelley Deal Photography & Floral by Amber Lanier Designs Married couple, Lauren and Clay, recreated a beautiful beach wedding with lovely floral designs and stylings of Amber Lanier and photographer, Kelley Deal. Lauren is also a photographer and wanted to capture this special moment. At the end of the beach shoot, she surprised her husband with a pregnancy announcement, with of course the cameras ready. Mutt & Me

“Mutt & Me” is a compelling story of friendship, dedication and perseverance told by Donnie Joyner, an amateur North Carolinian Black History researcher and historian. During the summer of 2001, “Mutt,” a good Samaritan, befriended Chasity, a four year old girl and her family. From this act of kindness, a lasting friendship was born. After his death, as a tribute to her friend, Chasity was instrumental in the revitalization of the Marsh Branch Cemetery aka Drew Cemetery.

Shoestring to Golden Spoon Local Wedding Venues for the Perfect Day on any Budget STORY BY: AMI BROWN

A

tied the knot in the Chapel on Bald Head Island and had their reception at the Shoals Country Club. This is a perfect option for a higher end budget wedding, as these are exclusive venues, with sweeping views and elegant decor. Kaitlin grew up on Bald Head and still owns property there, as a second home; she comes as often as she can. She chose the location for sentimental reasons, and of course the beauty, romance and serenity. Even in November, the natural greenery made the perfect backdrop for the wedding, the ocean view for the reception and the breathtaking landscape offered amazing photos.

young girl dreams her whole life of that special day, her wedding day. Reality sets in as an adult, and you realize the tremendous amount of work involved to make that dream come true. Americans spend 72 Billion dollars on weddings each year, that’s an average of about $26,000 for the typical wedding.

Our local area offers some amazing wedding venues no matter what your budget may be. The scenic coastline, beaches, lush greenery and warm weather make it the perfect spot. I sat down with Wedding Designer, Amber Lanier and we chatted about weddings, style and budgets. Today a shoestring budget would be anything

under $12,000 a mid-range budget would be about $35,000 and the higher range would be $50,000 and up, skies the limit. A few of the popular local venues include The Barn at Rock Creek, The Southport Community Center, Marker 614, Brusnwick Town, The Shoals and the Chapel on Bald Head Island and of course our lovely sandy beaches are the number one spot.

“...it’s such a romantic location, it was a fairy tale wedding and I couldn’t have asked for more. “

CURRENTS CURRENTS CASEY & TONY... chose the historic Brunswick Town as the wedding venue and they held their reception at Marker 614. With over 300 wedding guests they knew they needed plenty of space and ample parking. Brunswick Town offers a lovely venue on a rather small budget. It also has plenty of scenic backdrops for gorgeous photos, with a unique setting. The chairs were arranged in the chapel remains configured in a circle. This way all of the guests got a great view, and the curved chairs reflected the stylish grand window arches. The hanging moss accents the natural southern beauty of the location. Casey just fell in love with Brunswick town and knew it was the one, as soon as she saw it for the first time. Most of their guests came from out of town, and she loved the picturesque drive there as well. The historic setting offered a nice compliment to Casey’s design theme as well - Shabby - Chic. She had soft pinks, ivory and lots of greenery throughout the venue. The rustic brick, live oak trees, moss and of course a view of the Cape Fear River created a spectacular background for a variety of photos. Her April Spring Time wedding brought plenty of azaleas and a slew of other natural blooms all across the venue. She wasn’t worried about rain, because Brunswick Town also has a lovely covered area outside, just as a back up.

JENNIFER & KENDAL... chose the Southport Community Building for their wedding. It offers a large open space, very versatile and plenty of parking. The vast and nearby outdoor areas allow for a range of scenic views - a photographer’s dream location. This venue is on the lower end of the price scale as well if you are sticking to a tight budget. There are plenty of local Southport hotels to accommodate your out of town guests and nearby beaches, not to mention a number of fabulous local restaurants. Photo Time2Remember

The Barn at Rock Creek offers an authentic farm setting and immaculate attention to detail. Lesley Padgett Taube, the owner will help you plan everything and make sure the bride has nothing to worry about on her special day. She walked Megan through the process and was always helpful when she had any questions. This venue falls in the mid-range budget and offers a lake waterfront area, wooded areas and a huge rustic barn for entertaining. It also has plenty of apace for an extensive guest list. Megan chose a rustic - glam theme, with lots of teals, pinks, burlap, textures and flowers everywhere. Another reason she loved the venue is that if had plenty of outdoor space. As a military couple they have to travel quite a bit, but wanted to bring that Southern charm to their wedding. She wanted a relaxed atmosphere, and the Barn easily delivered. The guests even played corn hole. You can’t get much Southern than that! The Barn can also host your rehearsal dinner. Some things to know, they offer: *Indoor/ outdoor barn overlooking a picturesque pond on 13 acres of land * 2400 square feet of indoor space for your event. This area can easily accommodate 150 guests. 720 square feet

outdoor space under shelter also can be used for seating. *Indoor Tables and Chivari chairs seating up to 150 guests *Antique farm tables and doors *Handcrafted Rustic bar If you are looking for a rustic but elegant wedding location, this has got to be the one. Amber reminded me that this is one of her favorite locations. It has such a variety of indoor and outdoor space, your only imitation to design is your imagination.

If you are ready for a Creative day or night, Missy’s charming studio sets the mood for a personal class taught by the artist herself!

Megan’s favorite design element was this gorgeous floral spray, atop the arbor by the wooded area. (above) Megan opted for a June wedding and even though it was hot that day, there were

plenty of indoor spots to chill out. They even served Italian ice to cool down the guests. Lesley went out of her way to make sure everything was perfect.

CURRENTS CURRENTS DESIGNS BY AMBER LANIER So what exactly is a Wedding Event Designer? I learned a lot as we chatted about weddings! Amber takes the dreams and ideas the bride has, and implements them into the style of the decor. She sometimes has to really help the bride focus and choose the style so she can create the overall look the bride wants. Typically the bride will start a Pinterest page and start pinning the styles she likes. Amber then creates a special look that captures that style and feel. Some popular themes Amber sees is of course the nautical theme, which may include navy and white stripes, red, anchors, boats and sails. Another softer version is the what Amber calls the Seascape theme. It includes things like driftwood, softer blues and greens, metal lanterns, sea shells, sand elements and more earthy tones. Spring and Fall weddings are the trend, with the heat of the Summer here, that’s not surprising. Although Amber has created some spectacular Winter themes for those December and January weddings as well. Over the past few years she has seen styles come and go. Lately she has seen a trend of metals, gold, bronze and copper seem to be popular. She also styles a lot of Shabby-Chic, Vintage or Rustic Glam. Amber creates floral designs from head pieces to boutonnières to large arbor sprays. She can bring to life the ultimate wedding style and design. Her design services usually run about 25-30% of the overall wedding budget. Amber says it is definitely worth having a designer involved. It relieves the bride and the bride’s family of any hassle. The bride can spend time with her mom and friends before the wedding, having a glass of champagne instead of worrying if the centerpieces are where they are supposed to be. Who wants to worry about that? The brides I spoke to said Amber was definitely worth it because they got their dream wedding and actually enjoyed the day because they knew things were taken care of. For more information about Amber’s services call 910-616-0001 or visit the website: www.designsbyamberlanier.com

Barn at Rock Creek

I talked to Alicia Davis-Geddings, owner of www.oakislandncweddings.com/ and she gave me scoop on her services. For $2000, you get the Little White Chapel at South Harbour Village Marina (up to 100 guests), a few decorations, digital photos, a DVD, music, a very limited bridal party and the officiant. You can upgrade to the Beach package which will run you $2500, but you get a ocean

front sand ceremony, live music and the symbolic release of two white doves. Alicia says her clients are almost exclusively from out of town, mostly from Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Now if you’d rather spend your money on an elaborate honeymoon, say a two week cruise or a trip to Paris, you could consider having a small beach wedding like this instead.

OTHER LOCAL VENUES

I couldn’t mention every local wedding or reception venue in this article, but here are a few others: The Clubs at St. James, The Bald Head Island Club, The Brunswick River Walk, Oak Island Golf Club, La Vita Bruta and the Thomas Manor of Oak Island.

WEDDING IN A BOX I couldn’t leave out one last shoestring budget idea. I found a local website that is perfect for the bride “without a wedding gene.” It’s a one stop shop, you pick your date, buy a dress, and show up. Everything is done for you.

esination weddings are all the rage and the hottest trend! No need to go overseas. What better place to enjoy your wedding and honeymoon than right here in Brunswick County! With these properties you will feel like a princess in her own castle.

Located on the more secluded area of Caswell Beach it’s the perfect location for any bride’s dream wedding and honeymoon. This property looks and feels like a modern day Romeo and Juliet’s Castle. With sweeping views of the ocean and private bedroom balconies. This does come at a premium price, depending on the season this home will set you back between $2000 - $5000 per week. But considering it could be your wedding venue and honeymoon...maybe that’s not such a bad deal. The master suite offers a canopy bed draped in lush fabrics, and quality touches throughout, including a huge chef’s kitchen, perfect for caterers or preparing meals.

Kristin Goode from Oak Island Accommodation was the perfect person to chat to. They offer a huge selection of properties, not only perfect for a honeymoon, but can accommodate the wedding, the reception and even the entire wedding party. Talk about a onestop shop!

SURVIVING STRESS This first house is my pick for the ultimate Event Location. You could get married on the beach here, have your reception on the humongous wrap around porch and stay in this luxurious home for an extended honeymoon. Two stories of wrap around porches, ocean front, and huge living room and kitchen areas are just a few of the reasons I picked this property. With five bedrooms it can easily sleep 13 people. The windows stretch from floor to ceiling, there is not a dull view in sight. The extra deep porches would make the perfect location for an outside reception, or even intimate wedding. The extra large dining room table seats ten and a funky mural brighten sup the internal elevator. Depending on the season, this property also runs from about $2200-$5000, and there may be event fees associated with hosting an event here as well.

CURRENTS CURRENTS THE CANDY STORE HOUSE This has got to be one of the cutest little options in Southport, perfect for a romantic getaway, and quaint relaxing, honeymoon. It’s not a destination wedding or event rental, but it makes the perfect love nest. This little pink house used to be a candy store, but has been re-purposed as a lovely rental property in the historic Southport district. There are few options with this location, price and quality in Southport and I find this little house cute as a button. CURRENTS CURRENTS “ It’s so convenient, you can walk to the waterfront, Yacht Basin and all the shops and restaurants, no need to drive anywhere.“ The furniture is light, airy, comfy and modern. Not to mention the warm cozy fireplace, perfect for snuggling with your new spouse. It even has a picket fence and allows pets, so you could bring your dog if you wanted. The stainless appliances really stand out, as does the granite countertops and huge farm house sink. All the finishes and hardware are top of the line, it’s a little bit of luxury mixed with history and charm. The huge claw foot tub is perfect for a soak or just relaxing. The back porch rockers offer a quiet spot to read, chat or enjoy that morning coffee I love the soft pallet of the decor, but not overly beachy or themed. It looks and feels like home. This is a classy option and won’t break the bank. Off season rental is under $1000 per week, where peak season is about $1400 per week.

Pop Art, cute owls, license plates and a wall of hubcaps are just a few of this property’s unique design features. The Retro-Kitchen’s stand out feature is the red polka dot fridge and the slew of other red accent pieces like the whimsical EAT wall art. The funky decor and sixties inspired furniture may not be for everyone, but will bring a smile to your face and not a huge dent in your wallet.

For a beach property, it’s affordable and ideal for two love birds. If you tie the knot in the early Spring or late Fall, you will get even a better deal at under $800 for the entire week. If you happen to have a peak season wedding, then you will pay about twice that Planning is everything when it comes to booking these properties, especially in the Summer when they are in the most demand. he last full week of February brings two bluegrass-y acts to Odell Williamson Auditorium on the campus of Brunswick Community College. “Bluegrass-y?” you say? Let me explain. Among the folk music fan set bluegrass, or more broadly Americana, is, as the kids would say, “a thing” right now.

That is to say it is very popular and bluegrass/Americana bands are seemingly everywhere. But no one wants to be just another in the crowd following the herd, so every bluegrass act describes itself as unique with a diverse musical repertoire. This is all a bit comical as bluegrass is more than a little formulaic as a genre. Can they all be that much one of kind, really? In reality, many of these modern Americana bands do have some sort of hook that sets them a bit apart. Brunswick County will see two such acts in Harpeth Rising and Loren and Mark. The acoustic guitar and vocal duo Loren and Mark hail from different generations and sides of the globe. New Zealander Mark Mazengarb graduated with a classical guitar degree from the University of North Carolina in 2005 as part of an exchange program, while Loren Barrigar is a seasoned performer just becoming interested in finger-style guitar picking a la Chet Atkins. The two met at

a workshop in Australia and eventually began playing together, the first time at a Chet Atkins fan festival in Nashville. Mazengarb made a permanent home in the United States in 2012 and since then the duo has been touring both domestically and overseas. Loren and Mark play duel acoustic guitars while Loren sings lead vocals and Mark supplies harmony. Their music is as much country-influenced as much as bluegrass, with an impressive guitar style that reminded me very much of parts of the old Hot Rod Lincoln record from the 50s. Loren and Mark’s vocals are well-blended, but the instruments are the stars. Despite including the traditional banjo, Harpeth Rising is a bit more off the beaten path. The trio of Maria Di Meglio, Michelle Younger and Jordana Greenberg are all Millennials with classical performance degrees. Their combination of violin, cello and banjo harkens back not just to Ameri-

as people because in this industry, knowing your clients well means that you can cater your services to their specific needs so that they get the best event possible. In order to get to know our clients, we have an online planner as well as scheduled phone and in-person conferences.

Q: How do you manage to stay in the “background” yet still provide the musical ambiance that make receptions memorable?

A: We do this by always putting our clients first, so that the focus remains on them. To help us achieve this, we use our online planner and meet with the clients to schedule and organize the music, announcements, and event timeline prior to the big day. Most importantly, we always honor the client’s do-not-play lists, regardless of guest requests.

Q: What do you do when technical difficulties arise?

A: We firstly try to preempt technical difficulties in a number of ways. We only purchase high quality, reliable equipment and test our gear prior to setting up at the venue. Additionally, we always carry backup equipment and backups of backups to ensure that we are prepared for any eventuality. We also arrive to the venue early to setup our equipment and perform a sound check, so that we can make audio adjustments based on the acoustics of the room and the number and position of guests in attendance. Most importantly, we are flexible and are always prepared to adapt at a moment’s notice for any unforeseen event changes. Outdoor ceremonies require a sound system that can enhance yet not compete with nature.

A: Though we don’t have a favorite venue, we appreciate that every venue has its own unique atmosphere, benefits, and challenges. Some venues are trickier for setup and tear down, and some venues are more acoustically friendly than others. In short, we always try to visit the venue before the event to get an idea of how to setup our equipment to provide the best sound. The busiest time of the year for our business is spring, summer and fall with a few winter events. Many of our events are booked six months to more than a year in advance.

Q: Do you have an event that stands out in your memory as particularly memorable?

A: One of our most memorable events was a beach ceremony on Oak Island where we provided the sound and the groom and some of the groomsmen parachuted with flares and a US flag onto the beach strand to begin the ceremony.

Q: Do you have plans to expand or improve upon your already successful business? A: We are constantly improving our business by focusing on current trends in the types of events that we provide sound for. Additionally, we regularly update our

sound systems to ensure our clients get the absolute best possible sound for their events. We have also started offering up lighting and accent lighting to enhance the ambiance of the venue.

Q: What is the most requested first dance song? Father/daughter song? And lastly, do you stay in touch with any of your clients?

A: The 2016 most requested first dance song is tied between Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran and From the Ground Up by Dan + Shay. The most requested father/daughter and mother/son song is My Wish by Rascal Flatts. We absolutely stay in touch with many of our clients through social media, community events, email, texting, etc. We recently met with former clients for lunch and a walk on the beach.

FUN QUESTIONS: FAVORITE FOOD: Local seafood FAVORITE BOOK: I enjoy reading a lot of local history books FAVORITE MUSIC: It is very hard to choose a favorite genre as we have very eclectic tastes in music, but mostly prefer beach music and classic rock. FAVORITE PLACE TO TRAVEL: We enjoy occasional road trips to visit the best of what the Carolinas have to offer FAVORITE THING ABOUT SOUTHPORT: My favorite things about Southport are the people and the small town community atmosphere. Huge variety, laid back atmosphere and delicious food at Turtle Island Catering STORY BY: LISA P. STITES

L

ocals’ Night at Turtle Island Restaurant means great food with good friends in a relaxed atmosphere. And if everyone doesn’t know your name when you walk in the door, they’ll learn it soon enough. “You make friends at our bar,” waitress Amanda Wright said. Wright said she really enjoys working with the clientele at Turtle, especially the locals. “They’re amazing,” she said. “We expect them every Wednesday night.”

Jim and Marion Mattern have been coming to Turtle Island for about seven years. They love meeting up with friends, catching up on the latest news while enjoying a delicious seafood supper.

On the lighter side, but certainly not leaner side, this grilled chicken salad offers a filling array of protein, vegetables and fruit, perfect for anyone trying to make good on their New Year’s Resolution to eat healthier. Turtle Island also offers tuna, shrimp or scallops for salad add-ins. In 15 years or so of operation, Turtle Island on Oak Island has become known as a place for casual dining but not necessarily casual food. There are staple, familiar seafood dishes like conch fritters, clams, oysters and crab clusters, but also Thai seared tuna and Caribbean jerk pork loin. Wright said one of the things she loves best about the restaurant is the combination of island décor and such a variety of food. “I love how we have great food but a laid-back atmosphere,” she said. “You can come as you are and you are welcome.” And welcome they are. Always bustling with customers, Turtle Island welcomes familiar and new faces on Locals Night, Wednesday nights. The official name for the Wednesday night’s special is “Steam Night”, and it’s the only night you can’t make a reservation. Wright said she’s heard from new customers or visitors that they met locals on the beach or out and about in town who told them where to eat. The area around the bar and the restaurant seating area fill up quickly most nights, but

there’s always room to fit a few more. Jim and Marion Mattern have been going to Locals’ Night for approximately seven years. Like many regulars, Marion said her favorite dish is the whole baby flounder, because it is “to die for.” Jim also praised the whole baby flounder, but said he also particularly likes the steamed shrimp, oysters, and conch fritters. Whenever the couple has family visit, he said, Turtle Island is where they want to go. As for Wright, she likes to eat the best Southern classic delicacy... “It’s got to be the down home shrimp and grits,” she said. The Low Country Shrimp & Grits comes with fresh shrimp nestled into a bowl of stone ground grits topped with scallions, bacon and Parmesan cheese, and a low country brown gravy. The flavors and textures blend perfectly in this satisfying yet surprisingly light meal. The Jamaican jerked pork rib eyes features tender pork cooked with a Caribbean flair, spicy and flavorful but not too hot. The pork comes served with black beans and rice and a choice of side item.

CHEERS Just Add Punch!

PINA COLADA PUNCH

Make your event extra special with these tasty concoctions! STORY BY: KRIS BEASLEY

I

f you have ever hosted a bridal shower, most likely you served punch. There is just something about punch that makes an event special. I was surprised to learn that punch dates back to the seventeenth century when it was introduced from India to England by sailors and employees of the British East India Company. The word punch is from the Sanskrit word, meaning “five”. The original punch was made with five ingredients: sugar, alcohol, lemon, tea and spices. Whether you combine five of fifty ingredients, one thing is for sure, punch is just plain fun and delicious. Alcohol or not. If you want to make an event or gathering something that will unite your guests and make them feel special, serve punch! In a blender or food processor, blend bananas, orange juice and lemonade until smooth. Remove half of the mixture and set aside. Add 1 1/2 cups of warm water and 1 cup sugar to mixture in blender; blend until smooth. Place in a large freezer container. Repeat with remaining banana mixture, water sugar; add to container. Cover and freeze until solid. One hour before serving, take punch base out of freezer. Just before serving, place in a large punch bowl. Add pineapple juice and soda; stir until well blended. Garnish with orange slices if desired.

year records show that he sold the house to Mr. Pullan for $650. Wow! The current owner has updated and remodeled the home to an immaculate standard and high attention to detail. The period features like the delicate decorative wood trim are a real stand out. One of the owner’s favorite spots is this cozy little breakfast nook just off the kitchen. It’s the perfect spot for that morning cup of coffee, breakfast or quiet reading. You can also see the friendly neighbors pass by. It’s just high enough that outsiders can’t see in for privacy.

Southern Charm and Elegance

uilt in the 1870’s, this historic property in Southport has been loving restored, keeping the original architectural details, but with all the moden conveniences. What else could you ask for? There’s not a thing to do here, but move in!

301 East West Street is currently on the market and a steal offered by Southport Realty. A rich history comes with this home. Originally built in the early 1870’s by W.R. Furguson. Furguson was a Methodist Minister

and part time Southport Postmaster. One of the most notable features of the original home is the single stepped shoulder chimney of irregular bond. In 1895 the rear one story addition was built on the house and later that same www.SouthportMag.com / FEBRUARY 2017 / Southport Magazine 31

HOMESTYLE HOMESTYLE The large great room is light bright and open. The original hardwood floors look almost brand new. The plantation style wood shutters let in plenty of light, and bring that Southern charm to every room. Make no mistake, they may look period, but these windows are not original - they are energy efficient and offer warmth and style. The first thing you notice when you walk in this house is the cozy feeling, the calm sense of a loving home. It just feels good in here. Every detail seems to be hand picked for this house. From the furniture, to the artwork to the soft paint colors throughout. The downstairs level includes the great room, cozy den area with fireplace, two bedrooms, a full bathroom, huge eat in kitchen with adjoining dining room and a sun room complete with sky-lights. The upstairs is one large master suite walk in closet, huge bath, separate office nook, sitting area with fireplace, and laundry. Just inside the front door a foyer hosts the stairs. The staircase feels grand with the natural wood bannister and handrail. The little staircase nook is perfect for a small antique table or lamp.

Now the highlight of the first floor - the updated kitchen. Granite countertops, stainless appliances and huge island make this a real cook’s masterpiece. It’s open design allows for entertaining while cooking and plenty of space for guests to sit at the island bar. The split level counter make it the perfect height for both cook and eater. The bead-board details blend nicely with the wood trim details under the bar for a nice touch. Subway tile make the perfect back splash accent with the under cabinet lighting. The glass front cabinets keep with the period features but feel ultramodern at the same time. The mix of style here is right on the money. The modern lighting feels rustic and brings more unique style into this lovely space. This kitchen is really one of a kind and feels inviting, but not intimidating. Just off the kitchen toward the back door is a newer addition, a bright and functional sun room. It floods the rear of the house with light and is the perfect spot for plants and a small

seating area to take off your shoes. The hickory hardwood floors tie in the natural feel of light and life. The living room offers this separate sitting area around a warm cozy

HOMESTYLE HOMESTYLE fireplace. The original mantle and brickwork make it a real feature in this room. The fireplace has gas log inserts now for efficiency and warmth. It’s perfect for those cold nights, and all you have to do it switch on the flames. No chopping involved. This house is full of charm and life. The space has been nicely divided up into large open areas, but also some real sweet little intimate seating as well. There are so many options with this floorplan. The skies the limit, but I’d leave it just like it is. The layout suits a couple or a large family wanting their own space to get away. The owner uses one of the downstairs bedroom as a music room and the other as a guest room, but could easily be set up as a master. The interior doors are unique, they are solid wood, four and five panel - they don’t make them like that

HOMESTYLE HOMESTYLE anymore. The owners have made a point to keep all the original hardware on the doors too. Another little detail that really makes a difference when comparing homes. The dining room flows off the kitchen, more light and sun flood in through the windows. It’s plenty large enough to host a party or family reunion. Heading upstairs to the master suite, you notice how the light and airy feeling follows you up. It’s not closed in, it opens up even more at the top of the stairs. Just on the landing a double door hides a large laundry area. Plenty of room for storage and a great place to hide all that dirty laundry. Having it upstairs is great as well, no more carrying heavy baskets up and down steps. The master bathroom offers a huge soaker tub. One of the features that makes this master so special.

Another cute little space is the office or craft nook just near the landing upstairs. It’s the perfect little space for working, crafting or writing. A small desk fits in there perfect. It also has a curtain to hide the space if you like and a small closet inside with shelving.

“ Having the laundry upstairs is awesome. “

www.SouthportMag.com / FEBRUARY 2017 / Southport Magazine 35

HOMESTYLE HOMESTYLE The master also has a seating area with second fireplace, the perfect spot for your favorite book or chatting with your loved one. The outside space is just as intimate and cozy as the inside. With a huge wrap around garden, fully fenced in yard and several seating areas, it’s perfect for the entire family or large gathering. There is also a huge shed, with AC a man cave area and parking easily for 8 cars, a boat and a golf cart. This house is full of charm and quality finishes. There is only one thing left to do... move in! This house is currently on the market, but probably not for long, so contact Southport Realty today.

“ This house combines some really unique original features like stain glass windows along with modern updates like the recent addition of the spectacular warm sunroom “

HEALTH A Simple Touch Can Do Wonders Drop the technology and connect STORY BY: LESLIE RESCHLY, BSN, RN

Y

ears ago, before the internet, a popular advertising slogan professed, “Reach Out and Touch Someone”. Ironically, the slogan for Bell Telephone could still be utilized today as we connect often only via email, text messaging and social media and rarely through physical touch.

Physical touch is powerful. In infancy, it is the first sense to develop as a parent cuddles and caresses their newborn in their arms; often taking a picture of the first wrap of that tiny fist around their finger. In aging, it is often longed for as partners pass and society mores restrict the use of touch except among close friends. Frequently associated with love and romance, touch can also be used to promote feelings of calmness and acceptance not associated with sexuality. Have you experienced a time when the touch of another’s hand provided reassurance and decreased your anxiety level? Touch done with compassionate intent and caring can promote a symbiotic exchange between friends and even strangers in this game of life. Healing Touch was developed by Janet Mentgen in 1989. This use of energy therapy relies on ancient Asian medicine principles tested over the past thousand years in fields such as acupuncture. The overall philosophy for energy therapy is the idea that the human body is composed of energy fields interacting within the body and between the body and it’s environment. Energy flows through the body along meridians or energy channels through chakras or en-

ergy centers located in specific areas of the human body. Healing Touch utilizes a practitioner with heart-centered, intentional use of hands to move energy to allow balance for homeostasis and encourage the body to support it’s own healing. Similar examples of touch and energy-work modalities include Qigong, Reiki and Therapeutic Touch. Diana Johnson-Burton is a local healing arts practitioner of Healing Touch. Nationally certified as Level 3 practitioner for this type of Energy Work, she is also an active member of the Healing Touch Association. Unlike traditional massage, Healing Touch is non-invasive and although you may be on a massage table, you are typically fully clothed with minimal physical touching by the therapist. Instead, hands are hovered over or lightly touch the body to assess energy fields then “move” the field believed to be stagnant or blocked thus providing balance to support the body’s own wisdom of healing. Diana uses the following words to describe the process and overall result: grounded, clear, intuitive and spiritual, integration of body/mind/spirit, deep relaxation. Although searches for statistical medical scientific research yield few results

The Cash Mob

4:00 p.m. Meeting at the corner of E. Moore and S. Davis Streets What is a Cash Mob? A Cash Mob is similar to a Flash Mob but instead of sing/dancing it spends $20.00 as a way to support our locally owned shops. The Chamber will announce a general meeting location, date and time but the mob will not know where they are going until they arrive. Who Can Mob? Mob members can be fellow chamber members, residents or visitors. The only rule is the Cash Mob participants agree to spend $20.00 at the retailer. Mob Social: After the mob shops participants will be invited to follow the leader to socialize nearby for an adult beverage or sweet at one of our member pubs, wine shop, bakery, or ice cream (yogurt) parlor. The Cash Mob will convene one day per month: January, February, March, April, May, September, October and December. Chamber Staff will hold a drawing each month from all the member retail establishments that are independently owned and/or operated who also sell a variety of items that can be purchased for $20.00. The Chamber will maintain an e-mail database to

notify mob participants as well as announce the mob’s general meeting location on our Facebook, Google+ and on our website Events Calendar. The notification will let the mob know where to assemble but not the exact shop. If you would like to join the Cash Mob notification database, email your name, address and request to “Join the Mob” to karen@ southport-oakisland.com or text SHOPBRUNSWICK to 22828.Questions? A DAY IN THE YARD 2017

The Master Gardeners of Brunswick County offer a unique horticulture class for Brunswick County residents. The

class provides the basic knowledge needed to maintain a yard/garden in the coastal plain of North Carolina. This class is shorter and less expensive than the Master Gardener class and contains less science and more “how to” content. Entitled “A Day In The Yard”, the course is offered for people wanting to increase their knowledge of yard/garden maintenance in this zone but not wanting to involve themselves with the time commitment required of a Master Gardener. Class fee is $75.00 and the proceeds go to the Brunswick County Master Gardener Association. The class includes 6 – 2 ½ hour segments utilizing power point presentations and handouts. Each individual class is taught by a Master Gardener who might even be your neighbor. The course is offered multiple times in the spring and fall of each year at the Cooperative Extension Training Center in Bolivia, NC (Bldg. N). 2017 Day in the Yard classes: WINTER/SPRING: (1) Cooperative Extension, Mondays 9:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m., February 6 - March 13 (2) Southport Library, Mondays 2:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m, February 6 - March 13 (3) Hickmans Crossroads Library, Wednesdays 2:30 p.m.-5:00 p.m., January 4 - February 8 (4) Leland Library, Thursdays 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 noon, February 9 - March 16. The topics for the 6 segments are: Soil and Fertilization, Lawns and Irrigation, Woody Ornamentals and Pruning, Annuals, Bulbs & Perennials, Insects and Diseases and Vegetables & Fruits. If you need more information about this course, contact Tom Woods at Cooperative Extension Service – 910-2532610.
