The Academic Dress of Commencement
The History
Like other American colleges and universities, South Puget Sound Community College’s commencement rituals draw from the academic pageantry and traditions of the Middle Ages, when European universities were taking form. In the 12th and 13th centuries, the ordinary dress of students and teachers was that of a cleric. In fact, some suggest that the gown and hood grew out of the very practical need for scholars and clerics to stay warm in the unheated, stone buildings of the medieval period.
In 1895, an intercollegiate code for academic custom was developed, standardizing the academic styles for American colleges and universities. This code is reflected in most of the regalia worn today.
Academic Regalia
The cap, gown, and hood are the characteristic components of academic regalia. Each tells us something about the scholar wearing it.
The Cap
The mortarboard — the square-topped cap — is standard issue for graduations. At commencement ceremonies, the graduates wear the tassel on the right side, moving it to the left when their degrees are conferred. Faculty and staff participating in academic ceremonies wear their tassels to the left throughout the proceedings.
The Gown
The sleeve style of academic gowns reflects the degree level of the wearer. The bachelor’s gown has pointed sleeves; the master’s gown has long, closed sleeves that crescent at the bottom and slit at the elbow; the doctor’s gown has wide, bell-shaped sleeves with three velvet bars across and velvet panels down the gown front.
The Hood
Those who hold a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctorate degree may wear hoods that hang around the neck and down the back. The hood is the emblem of the degree the wearer holds and the institution from which it was received. The hood is trimmed in velvet in the color representing the degree held. The hood’s silk lining bears the colors of the institution that granted the degree. The length of the hood will vary based on the level of academic achievement: bachelor’s hoods are the shortest and doctor’s hoods are the longest at four feet.
Honor
Cords and Stoles
Honor cords are given for certain academic achievements or membership in honor societies. Stoles can be given in place of cords. Students wearing silver cords are graduating with high honors; those wearing white cords are graduating with highest honors. Members of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society may wear gold stoles with gold and blue cords, while Running Start students wear braided blue and white cords and Veterans may wear red, white, and blue braided cords.

THE WAVES OF SOUTH PUGET SOUND
SPSCC Alma Mater
(Words and Music by John Guarente)
There is a place wherein I blazed the path that I follow now. It brightens my days and makes me proud to say it’s South Puget Sound.
Whither ever my life shall lead I’ll honor the ocean blue with the knowledge and skill I need to master whate’er I choose.
‘Twas there I forged my friendships dear and stood apart from the crowd. A piece of my heart shall always hear the waves of South Puget Sound, the waves of South Puget Sound.
