FALL QUARTER 2021
COMMUNITY
COLLEGE
ON THE COVER
FINALLY, COLLEGE YOUR WAY AGAIN (GET AMPED!)
These past 16 months, our community has had a lot of practice being patient, following guidelines, and staying flexible. Some folks made the most out of it: learning new things, moving at a slower pace, and enjoying time alone at home. Some counted down the days to get together with friends and family, and missed having a full schedule with lots to do. And a lot of others fell somewhere in between.
The same is true of SPSCC students over the past year. Most students attended classes online from home, some joined inperson programs, and others took the hybrid class approach.

ASB President Nadaa Elbarbary (featured on the cover) called out some of the challenges students faced in her June graduation speech. “We were always trying to negotiate where we could have Zooms without background noises,” she recalled. “But I refused to accept failure, and so did you.” And Nadaa was right. Overall, most students pushed forward, passed their classes, and graduated. More students than ever took advantage of financial and personal supports offered by the college, like the $1 million+ awarded in COVID relief funds and free online sessions with mental health counselors.
FIND FACE-TO-FACE OR ONLINE CLASSES That’s why we’re celebrating all of our current (and future) students where they’re at, and offering the most flexible course schedule, services, and activities in college history. Thanks to strong vaccination rates in Thurston County and updated state guidance, SPSCC is ready to welcome students back to campus this fall. This year, you can do college your way again. With more in-person classes, and a huge selection of online and hybrid classes, you get to choose what works for you. Read on, and find your place at SPSCC this September.
Ready to Get Back to Campus “I missed in-person study groups.” “I just learn better in a classroom.” “I need to be around people.” We’ve heard all of this and more, and we’re ready to get back to campus, too! For those who fall into this category, here’s what you can expect: More face-to-face classes. Head back into the classroom to get in-person instruction in everything from math and English to drawing, music, political science, and more. It’s also a great time to get hands-on in one of our professional technical programs. In-person services and events. Come on over to our Olympia Campus to get personal support, participate in student clubs and activities, access library and tutoring services, and workout in the health and wellness center.
Happy Staying at Home “I like to pause and rewind lectures.” “I can do more with less time.” “I’m just not OK going in-person yet”. If you’ve done well at home this past year and want to maintain the new balance you’ve found, we’ve got you covered. Big selection of online & hybrid classes. Many students were very successful in online classes last year. We’ve got a big selection of online classes that let you learn whenever and wherever it works for you. Virtual services are still available. Zoom rooms and online meetings are here to stay, so you’ve still got access to the great (and free) supports we offer like counseling, tutoring, advising, and more. Whether you’re a new student looking at college choices this year, or you’re a current student eager to return to campus, we’re here for you. No matter how you choose to do college this fall, you’ll find supports and schedules that work with your life. ■

FEATURED CAREER PATHWAY
PATHWAY TO A CAREER IN SALES Jacob Luplow enrolled at SPSCC as a returning adult student without a clear plan of what he wanted to study. What he found at SPSCC was a passion for writing and skills that led to his role as VP of Sales at digital media company NorthAmericaTalk. “My experience at SPSCC was absolutely fantastic, some of the best years of my life,” Jacob said. “SPSCC was where I fell in love with creative writing, and my professor, Jennifer Berney, remains one of the most influential professors in my academic years.” While attending SPSCC, Jacob earned a paid internship writing with local online media outlet ThurstonTalk—an opportunity he received because of a recommendation from Berney. He graduated from SPSCC with an Associate in Arts with a focus on creative writing, and transferred to Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, on a full scholarship. There, Jacob earned a Bachelor of Special Studies and double majored in creative writing and art photography. During his time at Cornell College, Jacob had some success as a writer and photographer. He worked for about six months as an investigative journalist for the Iowa Center for Public Affairs Journalism on a long-form piece about puppy mills, and saw his writing and photography published in several journals, most notably Brown University's literary journal “The Round.” After graduation, Jacob decided to stay in Iowa and explore careers outside of writing. He saw an ad for a job selling cars and
applied. Jacob quickly realized he enjoyed selling cars—and he was good at it. "I fell in love with sales because I love helping people solve their problems and re-envision situations," Jacob said. That position set him on the path to becoming the VP of Sales for NorthAmericaTalk, the media organization behind ThurstonTalk where he got his start as an intern during his time at SPSCC. Today, Jacob is in charge of sales for NorthAmericaTalk’s online sites across the Pacific Northwest. He oversees every aspect of the sales process for the company, from the sales team members to developing strategic partnerships in the community, as well as day-to-day sales. While some people might not see a correlation between his career and degrees, Jacob knows how writing and art has shaped every aspect of his life, including his ability to sell. He credits his success as a sales professional to everything he learned in school, from interacting with people to the fundamentals of quality writing that’s required in email or written communications. Jacob believes it’s all connected, and it was all crucial for his journey. “If I could do it all over again, I'd pick the same path.” ■

COACH BECCA MADER HEADS NEW WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM SPSCC is excited to introduce Clipper Athletics’ newest team and coach; Rebecca (Becca) Mader has stepped into the dual role of Health & Wellness Operations Manager and Head Women’s Soccer Coach. “Coach Mader knows firsthand how to balance being a focused student and being an athlete,” said Athletic Director Vernell Willingham. “She’s a great fit for this position because of her playing experience, coaching, and focus on academic excellence.”
Along with fellow coaches and student-athletes, Mader is eager for Clipper Athletics’ return to league play this fall. She is actively recruiting for the inaugural Women’s Soccer team. Mader is excited to put the team together, recruit young women from a wide range of abilities, and help them grow as student-athletes. “Sports is such a great place for young women to grow and gain confidence, and I’m excited to share that with other young women in the community,” said Mader. Along with her coaching responsibilities, Mader will manage daily operations at SPSCC’s newly opened Health & Wellness Center. “She will bring a new perspective with her experience from a championship facility and help guide our vision of the Health & Wellness Center,” said Willingham.
Coach Mader brings seven years of experience in coaching and instructing soccer and basketball for NCAA Division I, II, and III schools, including Carleton College, University of Minnesota-Duluth, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and private instruction. As a college athlete, Mader participated in soccer, basketball, and track, earning 14 letters and academic All-Conference and All-American team recognitions.
The Clipper Athletics program has worked for three years to bring women’s soccer to SPSCC. The team will condition in the newly finished Health & Wellness Center at the SPSCC Olympia Campus, and will practice and play home matches at the Regional Athletic Complex (RAC) in Lacey. They plan to begin league play in the Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) in the 2022-23 school year. ■
Mader holds her Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science from St. Olaf College and a Master of Science degree in Education Sport Pedagogy from Baylor University.
SPSCC’s new Health & Wellness Center features brand new fitness spaces, two full-size gyms, study and meeting spaces, and a café.
