SOUTH PUGET SOUND COMMUNITY COLLEGE FALL QUARTER 2022 MEET Running Start Twins Arne & Bella
Arne became invested in sociology and the thoughtful discus sions that came with it. “Sociology wasn’t something I’d ever really thought about before my time at SPSCC. I took the class because it filled one of my humanities credits and didn’t think much more about it. However, after taking the class, I really enjoyed it,” said Arne. “We were Bella and friend Kiera at graduation on June 11, 2022.
Twins Arne and Bella Wiseman are recent graduates of Olympia High School and SPSCC’s Running Start program. Their college journey started two years ago when they first learned about the program from friends. Around the same time, the pandemic forced all schooling to be moved online. Arne and Bella didn’t let this slow them down and joined Running Start to continue moving forward in their education.

“I enjoyed the ability to manage my school work around my other commitments,” added Bella. “This flexibility allowed me to work, volunteer, and take advantage of opportunities I may have missed otherwise.” "We heard from friends in the program that SPSCC had a wide variety of online classes. The Perfect Time to Explore While the pair have always been close, they were able to explore their individual interests through SPSCC’s many Pathways and degree options. Bella was drawn to the arts, specifically ceram ics, and enjoyed participating in the studio and special events such as raku firings. “I became interested in ceramics as soon as I took my first intro class,” said Bella. “Throughout intermediate and advanced ceramics, I really appreciated the creative freedom allowed by professors. Though there were rough guidelines for assign ments, I had a lot of freedom to focus on my own interests.”
An Amplified Future While Arne and Bella have been able to explore their personal interests as Running Start students, the experience has also pre pared them for the next step in their academic journey: Western Washington University in Bellingham. Bella plans to study social sciences with a focus on either politi cal science or psychology and minor in honors interdisciplinary studies, then continue to earn an advanced degree in her field. “My favorite classes I’ve taken at SPSCC, aside from ceram ics, was Sociology of Gender and Political Science,” said Bella. “These classes in combination with my volunteer work at Thurston County Volunteer Legal Services inspired me to further pursue the social sciences.” Arne hopes to study kinesiology and wants to pursue a degree in “Myhealthcare.passion for healthcare originated at a past job where I worked at one of my great-grandparents assisted living commu nities,” said Arne. “SPSCC has helped me learn how to prioritize my time and work efficiently. It helped me explore my passions and get me ready for the next step.”

“Running Start has been a great way to kick off our college careers and get us on the path we need to be on to move to Western this fall,” added Bella. “It’s prepared us and I’m just excited to see what we do next.” ■ Scan with your camera hear more from Arne & Bella

In addition to helping each other, Arne and Bella could also rely on other resources offered by SPSCC such as Learning Support Services (LSS). LSS offers free tutoring across almost every subject, encouraging students to become independent, self-advocating, and resourceful learners. “LSS helped me out a lot when submitting long written assign ments,” said Bella. “I always find it helpful to give your paper a second set of eyes!”
When their classes overlapped, they were always ready to support each other. “Having a twin going through the program has been unbeliev ably helpful,” said Arne. “For instance, I took political science last spring and Bella took it this winter. So, whenever she had any questions or needed help, she was able to use me as a resource.”

During his time at SPSCC, Aaron has been able to explore his passion for computers. One of his favorite experiences so far has been his capstone class. For the first time, Aaron could be hands-on with the equipment and he was excited to be able to work alongside his classmates in person. “I got to experience this mass cooperation between students where we may not know each other but we were brought together by discussions of how to properly wire things up or what ports to use,” he said. “It’s really great for connecting people.”

“Information Technology is a community-based field. A lot of our work is built around working with others and getting things done. Having that practice at SPSCC is great for our future as well as giving an accurate representation of the workplace,” said Aaron. “I chose to attend SPSCC because I want to succeed.”
CYBERSECURITY & NETWORK ADMINISTRATION
After graduating, Aaron plans on entering the workforce in IT security, network management, or as a helpdesk operator. Once he has a few years of experience under his belt, Aaron wants to return to college and further his education. With the IT field constantly evolving, Aaron is excited by the fact that there will always be something new for him to learn. “If you’re looking at SPSCC or the CNA program specifically because you have an interest, go for it,” said Aaron. “You’ll learn a lot of helpful knowledge that will always be relevant. IT knowl edge will always be valuable and in demand. Go for it because you’ll learn skills that will benefit you throughout your entire career and life.” with your camera - Career Coach by Emsi: spscc.edu/careercoach
Aaron is a student in SPSCC’s Information Technology path way with a specific focus on Cybersecurity and Network Administration (CNA). The CNA program covers skills rang ing from learning how to protect small consumer computers to properly configuring mass networks. Aaron discovered his interest in IT when he was in the seventh grade. His middle school introduced Mouse Squad, a class that taught students the fundamentals of IT security. “I took the class because I was sort of interested in computers at the time and I just ended up falling in love with it,” said Aaron. “Since then, I just furthered my education in it throughout high school and now throughout college.”
FEATURED CAREER PATHWAY 5
A large part of Aaron’s journey has been the constant support from the IT professors. “They’re phenomenal. They want you to succeed more than anything. If you’re having trouble, they’ll help you figure out what’s wrong and help you find and understand the solution,” said Aaron. “It’s not just patience, it’s the passion for teaching that comes through.”

“I homebrewed on a simpler level and the program has demysti fied a lot of the processes that go into designing and producing beer which has been amazing,” said Eric. “It’s way more acces sible. There’s a method to it and you are given the tools to execute it.”
“Traditionally, the brewing industry is difficult to access without experience,” said recent SPSCC graduate Eric Wilcox. “One of the great parts is the community that’s built around this industry and how SPSCC is integrated into that community.” Like many others, Eric’s life was turned upside down by the pandemic when he was laid off from his job. While looking for other opportunities, Eric found SPSCC’s Craft Brewing & Distilling program and decided that it was the perfect chance to make a career out of one of his hobbies.
In his second year of the program, Eric became an intern at Headless Mumby Brewing, a local brewery that exclusively crafts lager beers. As the final step in his internship, Eric was asked to design his own recipe. In the process, he experienced everything that goes on behind the scenes when producing a beer, from recipe cre ation to costing to ordering. At the end of Spring Quarter, Eric’s German-style altbier became available for the community to try at Headless Mumby’s tasting room.
“I wanted to make something that had a lower ABV and that was smooth and refreshing,” said Eric. “It’s all malted barley and different degrees of kilning on the barley. Pilsner was the main base mold and I brought in more of a bready flavor with a caramel element to it.”

ERIC'S CRAFT BREW: COMBINING SCIENCE & CREATIVITY
SPSCC created the nation's first associate degree program in craft brewing, distilling, and cider making in 2019, and is proud to house its program in the Tumwater Craft District. Students in the program learn and work in world-class facilities with local industry professionals and combine their interests in science, technology, business, and creativity.
While Eric is thankful for the skills both the Craft Brewing & Distilling program and internship have taught him, he is also thankful for the community he was able to build along the way. “It’s been amazing. Everybody has different goals going into it but underneath all of that we have a base passion and apprecia tion for the craft of beverage making,” said Eric. “Getting to be around the cohort provides an endless scope of perspectives.” “I’m very grateful for the program for providing that point of access to the industry,” he said. “Providing the path from begin ning to end is what’s unique about it. If people are interested in getting into this industry then coming through this program is the way to do it.”
